Baynes declares: I'm Aussie, not Kiwi
AUSSIE: New Zealand has lost its tug-of-war with Australia over basketballer Aron Baynes.

New Zealand has lost its tug-of-war with Australia over basketballer Aron Baynes, with the Kiwi-born big man being included as one of five debutants in the Boomers squad to tour South America.

Tall Blacks coach Nenad Vucinic had made his pitch for the dual-qualified former Washington State standout, hoping he would throw his lot in with New Zealand where he would be a guaranteed selection for New Zealand's international programme.

However Baynes has turned his back on his country of birth and decided to go the riskier route of representing Australia where he grew up. The 2.08m centre/power forward has made the Boomers cutoff for this tour, but will struggle to make the squad for major events when their big-name NBA and Europe-based players return.

"It was always going to be a long shot for us," said Vucinic from Trento in Italy today where his Tall Blacks went down 77-80 to the hosts in a four-nation tournament.

"Aron is an Australian -- he was born in New Zealand but Aron regards himself as an Australian because he has grown up there (in Cairns) and played all his life there.

"We went in on the fact they have got a lot of depth in the forward line and we thought he might decide not to commit to Australia just yet. Now he has committed it is a little disappointing.

"I feel it is the wrong decision, and that he would have had much more opportunity to play for us. But in the end he's got to go the way he feels. Good on him, he's made a decision, and we'll just try to keep building around the players we have."

The Tall Blacks seem certain to get a close-up look on what they missed out on with Baynes now a strong likelihood to be part of the Boomers squad to meet New Zealand in the two-game Oceania series on August 23 and 25.

Boomers coach Brett Brown and his NZ-based assistant Andre Lemanis sprung a couple of selection surprises by including two point guard debutants in the form of teenagers Matthew Dellavedova and Jason Cadee, both of whom played for the Emus at the recent Fiba U19 world championships in Auckland.

Breakers forward Oscar Forman has also been rewarded with another chance to cement his place in the national squad after making his debut on the recent trip to China.

The other first-time Boomers are giant 2.16m West Australian Luke Nevill who recently finished a successful career at the University of Utah and 2.10m Adelaide 36er Matt Burston.

"This was always going to be an inexperienced side because we're looking at the big picture for London 2012," Boomers head coach Brett Brown said.

"All the debutants have trained very well, there's no shortage of talent, and we're excited to give them a chance."

Australian squad to play tournaments in Argentina and Brazil July 30-Aug 10: David Barlow, Aron Baynes, Matt Burston, Jason Cadee, Peter Crawford, Matthew Dellavedova, Oscar Forman, Adam Gibson, Joe Ingles, Nathan Jawai, Luke Nevill, Stephen Weigh.

Thats quite normal here Down Under... in different sports codes we have New Zealand-born playing for Australia and Australian-born playing for New Zealand... they based it on ancestry... sometimes athletes plays for both countries.. there's this guy who plays for Australia in rugby league but plays for New Zealand in rugby union... though not at the same time...

For all those out there who aren't too familiar with the difference between the lads from the large island and their next door neighbours.

Here's a perfect example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYnoCleH7OM) of how different we are. However, in reality the lads on this show (http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/promotion/cupfever) have drastically exaggerated the Kiwi accent.

There's nothing funnier for Aussies than to have a crack at our neighbours' accent even though it's really not that different. :D

Oh yeah! lol

That was funny. The newspaper was trying to show that it was a nice "win" for Australasia lol. Kiwis are ALWAYS overshadowed by the Aussies.

Staying on the topic of football. In my opinion, the All Whites were the team of the tournament! UNDEFEATED! Another great performance by Australasia! ;) lol

Top 5 Teams of the World Cup:

1. All Whites
2. La Celeste (Uruguay)
3. La Furia Roja (Spain)
4. Germany
5. Holland

As a fan of La Liga, I always thought Spain will win it.. too bad for Holland, they only had one player (Robben) playing in the finals...

Since you mention Uruguay, I wish that handball (I think that was a tactical move) by Suarez take place against Argentina if the two South American countries face each other.. it would have been the most ironic elimination for Diego Maradona:p.. its like "Hey I did that before!"

Maradona had the Hand of God. Luis Suarez had the Hands of God! lol

Asamoah Gyan SHOULD have just put in that penalty. I don't know what on earth he was thinking in going down the middle and putting it so close to the cross bar. You're supposed to just put the &%$#@ ball in the need. You don't need all that %$#@ power. Oh well :) My team reached the semis and Gyan will forever be thinking, "What if ..."

lol!... that was sad that he missed the penalty.. Suarez' sacrifice (red card) and tactical move (handball) prove to be vital..

yeah, he's probably thinking it right now... "What if...?"

Oh yeah ... btw bru, good luck this Sat. for the rugby. Unfortunately, I won't b watchin' it on tele cause I'll b out with the lads to watch live Sydney FC vs EPL's Blackburn Rovers :D ... and prior to that Greece's AEK Athens vs Scotland's Glasgow Rangers :D ... I can't believe that Wellington beat Latin American powerhouse: Boca Juniors. Is there some "special potion" that Kiwi footballers are using? The "Socceroos" should have used it in the game against Germany

hehehe somehow for the last two years, NZ football change a lot.. ever since Oz moved to the AFC...

Yeah, I was surprise about that.. beating Boca Juniors.. but I think that was a mixed of first-teamers and reserves (since some top players chose to stay in Argentina) otherwise, the result would've been other way around.. still a good result for an A-League team..

I prefer watching the Sydney-Blackburn if I was you too... rugby is kinda boring me this year for no apparent reason..
