View Full Version : Group E, Day 3: Philippines vs Kuwait

Starts 9:00 am Tianjin time.
Kuwait is a running team, so expect perimeter and outside shots from this team.
If the defense we used on Korea, Japan and Taiwan clicks along with our shooting, then there's no doubt we can beat this team.

Kuwait can play but their problem is that they lack presence in the paint. Most of their points come from perimeter, lay-ups and outside shots. So when high caliber teams saw this weakness, they employed rough defense to give Kuwait a miserable time in hitting their shots.

Unlike the contenders we don't have the luxury of playing our A-game every single time. i feel bad for Kuwait because we will be back to playing our rugged physical defense tomorrow. i don't know what will happen to our offense but this is the last bus for the other guys to build their confidence. Yeah, i meant Santos, Raymundo and a bit of Aguilar.

We definitely need this win tomorrow so YG mustn't take any chances.

I want to see more of Japeth tomorrow. And a whole lotta Arwind. Maybe we can start Kerby at the PF while we're at it.
We should keep on pounding the opposition -- inside, outside. Feed the ball to the low post at every opportunity. To keep defenses honest, we should also start Norwood at SF -- he had a good game earlier and he should be ready to carry that over tomorrow.
We will win this one by at least 10 points.

i am predicting a deficit around that number as well. But the ideal finish for tomorrow is that we end it as soon as possible; meaning we blow them out. Nothing like a good confidence booster going into Friday's knockout showdown with Jordan/Lebanon and ugh, maybe China if they get upset one way or the other this round.

Thanks!! But it's not the kind of mentality they need for tomorrow. They should give the same passion they showed today. The Lead doesn't matter, what matters is that the big men gain their confidence back.

No disrespect to Kuwait but i think we'll win this game. More than that, this is a perfect time for us to sharpen our execution and hopefully slowly get Japeth back in rhythm because we will definetely need him to produce in the coming games for us to have a better chance in this tournament.

Where can I find a list of the members of the Kuwait team, complete with heights and playing positions? The official FIBA site here (http://china2009.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/09/fascm/team/p/rid//sid/7038/tid/315/profile.html) is incomplete.
I just want to know how big are their "bigs" compared to RP's.
Thanks in advance.

Players that must log in heavy minutes tomorrow are Kerby, Arwind, and Japeth.
Willie, James, Asi, and Mick should rest a bit. 15mins for these players maximum maybe. Anyway, we should win this one. No let up!

I say give a lot of minutes to seldom used players and have them try to get their groove in this tournament.
Make Arwind Santos & Japeth start and end the game. also helterbrand, or if he is still hurting then rest him.

Are we sure we are really in the quarterfinals? We must beat Kuwait first right? But, is an ordinary win (say, 5-10point margin) enough?
I have a feeling the quotient system will apply in the end. And I dont think Yeng Guiao is even considering that possibility.
Japan still has a chance in making the cut by upsetting Taipei tomorrow.
And what if Taipei beats Korea today?
I think we could end up with the 8th spot going into quarters and face China or worse, 2nd last in Group E which means we dont make it to the quarters at all.

We are already in the quarter-finals... the Kuwait game is just to determine our group seeding... there's no way we'll finish fourth in our group now, even if the Japs upset Chinese Taipei since we already beat them... nor it will change our chances if Taipei beat SoKor since we already loss to them... but we'll never know... FIBA Asia bureaucracy is f*cked up IMO... anything could happen...

From the looks of it, Korea is determined to grab the no. 1 spot because it avoids a semi-final encounter with the Chinese. Korea is leading Taiwan by the way, and the latter has yet to take the lead.

I think we already gained the respect of our Asian neighbors after the Taiwan and Iran game. Kuwait should be a walk in the park, just don't get over-confident.
IMO, we are now known as a "3 point shooting team," that I guess is a good label than what we usually hear.

NOTE: This is OT, but I could not find a Korea-Chinese Taipei thread, and this game had been discussed in this thread.
Wow, what a game... Chinese Taipei was leading Korea, 68-66, with 1:12 to go in the 4th quarter.
Long-haired wonder Tseng (#11) was not much of a factor because of early foul trouble (3rd personal foul with 5 minutes to go in the 1st quarter) and ultimately fouled out while guarding Ha. Tseng ended up with "only" 5 points in just 13 minutes playing time. Against the Philippines, yesterday, he had 21 points in 34 minutes and was almost like a one-man team for CT.
Korea could have easily lost this game and complicated Group E standings.
FINAL SCORE: 72-70 for Korea.

I hope Japeth, Arwind and Kerby would redeem themselves tomorrow. I think it's about time for them to regain their confidence and start to feel again the game, IMHO. And our key players would also need to take a breather tomorrow by minimizing their playing time in order to prepare themselves for the succeeding KO match-ups.
I hope to see Kerby as the Kerby I saw in Tokushima 2 years ago.
Go Team Pilipinas. Fight!

If we lose to Kuwait, then either Taiwan or Japan would tie us at 2-3.
How would FIBA break the 2-way tie, is it win-over-the-other?
Because if so, we beat them both, and so would be seeded 3rd anyway regardless of the RP-Kuwait result. :)

If we beat Kuwait tomorrow, we wind up in 3rd place thus meeting Jordan in the Quarterfinals. Should we lose to them, we have another tough road in claiming the highest finish--fifth place.
From the looks of things, it's gonna be Korea/Iran vs. Qatar in one of the quarterfinals. Whoever loses will meet us in the classification round (if that's where we land).

This is what I find annoying in Philippine basketball these days. College hoops are getting media attention while the real ball game (international basketball) is not receiving any slack.
I'm not a fan of college basketball because the game is not that high caliber. I only watch some games to check on the Gilas players. Like honestly, people these days actually think the UAAP and NCAA is a better league than the PBA. Talk about showbiz and superstar mentality, the reason why I hate Filipino TV shows.

Other networks cannot give out news about our national country bec its being led by a PBA team, meaning all rights of preview, news, updates are done by BTV or CS9 (stup!d copyright restrictions apply for some reason). Same thing with UAAP which most news you'll hear comes from ABS-CBN.

This is correct. We beat both teams and both has a chance to tie us at 2-3 with an improbable loss vs. Kuwait. The crucial match-up to look at actually is the China and Jordan game tomorrow night will decide also the #1 and #2 in the other side; they get to choose their opponents since we'd be finishing our game in the morning.

It's not the copyright restrictions. It's the network's prerogative to show highlights or even news of this events. If you noticed in one of BTV/Solar's shows (One U) sometime a year ago they were showing NCAA/UAAP highlights/news (ABS property). The network did not care if the event was from a rival station. News is after all, news. So really, it's the network's decision to show or not to show this news.

The men's national basketball team of the Philippines is one of the best-performing Asian teams in international tournaments, winning a bronze medal in the 1954 FIBA World Championship for men and a fifth-place finish in the 1936 Summer Olympics, the two best finishes of any Asian team in the history of the top two international basketball tournaments.(wikipedia)
*Philippines is still the best team in asia regarding on achievements and rich history. But because of the suspension in the international competition and BB program, i think the Philippines is now rank at 5 or 6 among the best team in Asia.

Santos is too small to play SF in international competition. He lack height at SF, he can't even play the SG position due to inability to dribble wisely... He doesn't have the upper body strength to absorb the bangging in the picks, that often leaves his player open... But i never doubted his talent and heart... He is a competitor, a warrior. FIBA is a fast type of tournament, if you struggle in one game it's so hard to re-gain your composure. I hope arwind and kirby can still play their A-game tomorrow...

Well that's bad networking decision then, they do this on every sport. We only hear about those who wins but not hear about everyone who competed for our country. What a sad truth, at least with the copyright theory I had the networks would have better excuses. :(

Once this tourney is over, PBA will just be like PBA. I guess players can now focus more on the entertainment and business side of Philippine's professional basketball aspect. they'll be back on showboating and individual skills showcase. All of them know that this is probably the last PBA backed national team that will participate in a regional and FIBA sanctioned tournament. Like what coach yeng told a while ago, the PBA should not abandon the sending of its player to compete internationally. I like his idea to continue competing internationally, but we got GILAS waiting in line, maybe the PBA can arrange yeng's proposal after the 2011 FIBA Qualifier... We need to play outside of our SMALL BOX (PBA), we need to be expose in international competition. If we are not suspended last time, i think we are able to do better in 2007 FIBA.
But it's not to late for our beloved country. What we need is unity for the benefit of our country and the game we love.

They'll be like.. leave us alone.. well maybe not all of them but definitely some of them..
That's why you enjoy it while it lasts... Maybe we'd still see the PBA players after 2012... Maybe never...

If they (PBA) goin to represent our national basketball team again, I believe the core group of that team will still be composed of our current Smart-Gilas developmental team, they'll be eligible to play in the PBA by that time, is that correct?

Since vs Kuwait will be a no bearing game, its a lock that guiao will work on patterns for the looming Jordan QF matchup (unless of course they upset China)

Once this tourney is over, PBA will just be like PBA. I guess players can now focus more on the entertainment and business side of Philippine's professional basketball aspect. they'll be back on showboating and individual skills showcase. If the PBA is as smart as i hope they are, they wouldn't stop supporting the RP team because they'll draw the ire of the whole country. That's why it's crucial for us to qualify so their hands will be forced to continue sending teams to tourneys like this one.

MANILA, Philippines - Kuwait is the last team that Powerade Team Pilipinas will face before the FIBA-Asia knockout quarterfinals start on Friday in Tianjin and it’s a game coach Yeng Guiao can’t afford to lose.
The Philippines is safely in the eight-team quarterfinals but what Guiao is avoiding is a matchup against powerhouse China, expected to finish No. 1 from Groups C and D, now consolidated into Group F.
If the Philippines loses to Kuwait, it will end up with a record of 2-3. That will drop Powerade to No. 4 in the seedings of Groups A and B, now combined into Group E. If Chinese-Taipei also makes it to 2-3, Taiwan will be ranked No. 3 because of a superior quotient over Powerade.
Under FIBA rules, the quotient takes into account points for and against in all games, excluding those against eliminated teams. It will not matter that the Philippines beat Taiwan, 77-70, last Monday because the winner-over-the-other rule doesn’t apply. And the Philippines’ 84-point win over Sri Lanka, booted out in the first phase of eliminations, isn’t counted in the quotient. This interpretation is based on previous FIBA-Asia Championships. Confirmation on the application of the quotient system was being awaited at presstime.
Before yesterday’s games, the Philippines had a +3 quotient while Chinese-Taipei, +11.
RP could still be at 4th, this according to quinito henson...

TIANJIN (FIBA Asia Championship) - Wednesday’s action in the 25th FIBA Asia Championship is bound to be interesting with as many as three places in the quarterfinals up for grabs.
Philippines are the only team, who are not only assured of a place in the quarterfinals, but also know their ranking in their eight-final round Group.
Defending champions Iran, hosts China, last edition’s bronze medalists Korea and West Asian powerhouse Jordan all moved into a 4-0 win-loss zone and thus sure of entering the last eight.
Iran will match wits with Korea on Wednesday with the winners finishing on top of Group E.
The clash between China and Jordan holds a similar prospect for Group F.
Iran and Korea won their day’s games in contrasting style.
Iran proved too strong for an enthusiastic Philippines for a in their 88-78 win, but Korea survived a huge Chinese Taipei scare before scraping through 72-70.
Chinese Taipei will play against Japan, who defeated Kuwait 78-51. The winners of that game will take the fourth spot from Group E.
Philippines have booked the No 3 spot in Group F irrespective of their result against Kuwait on the morrow.
Kuwait, 0-4, are confined to the 9-12 classification round.
In Group F, China scraped past a wasteful Lebanon 71-68 and Jordan were as solid as ever in beating 2005 FIBA Asia Championship bronze medalists Qatar 74-60.
Kazakhstan beat United Arab Emirates in the other Group F game of the day 84-56 to keep their hopes alive.
Kazakhstan (1-3) need to beat Lebanon (2-2) and by a sizable margin to be able to force a probable three-way tie and emerge triumphant in the goal average tie-breaker.
Should Lebanon win that game they will take the third place followed by Qatar (1-3).
Qatar will have to beat UAE and hope the Kazakhs do not beat Lebanon. Lest it’ll be time for the calculators to come out.
Now to Tuesday’s games.
Thats according to Fiba site.

i dunno what to believe anymore
I dont think this is true. Quotient only applies in triple ties. If its a double tie, winner over the other should be followed. Since we beaten both Taiwan and Japan, we are secured at no. 3 no matter what happens vs Kuwait.
Nevertheless, RP will win tomorrow.

What we need is unity for the benefit of our country and the game we love.
yeah we got to get out of our stupid little playground called PBA:rolleyes: the only way rp ballers will improve is to give them 'baptism of fire" in international tournaments;)
Will this be the 2nd to the last game of our team? I certainly hope not.

* - Kazakhstan has a very remote possibility of making the quarterfinals by they must beat Lebanon by at least 30 points.
As of yesterday the standings of the 3 teams are:
Lebanon 2-2 (Quotient Point Difference +60)
Kazakhstan 1-3 (Quotient Point Difference -23)
Qatar 1-3 (Quotient Point Difference of -40)
Qatar beating UAE 91-45 just now, the Qataris now have a Quotient of +6 the door has been shut vs Kazakhstan even if the Kazakhs score an upset vs Lebanon I think it would be impossible that it would be a rout of 30 points.

That's the old system, Nardy. i do believe the only ones considered now for computations are the tied teams. Well, it's insignificant now since Lebanon is thrashing Kazakshtan. But you don't consider all the scores only the teams involved in the tie. Unless, FIBA again, changed it.

What's up with Kerby Raymundo? He was supposed to be one of the leader of this team, instead he's the most inconsistent (along with JA & Arwind). If probably coac Yeng, knew he'll play like $#!* on this tourney he could have just selected Ranidel DeOcampo. Even agains Kuwait, he stinks!
to all those who are disappointed that rp media is not giving attention to the rp team stint in china, you are wrong. they are not just giving enough attention :D.
maybe you should stop watching abs-cbn and just switch to gma-7. they have been releasing news about our fiba games, both in tv and online.
and actually, they have news about rp team even before the jones cup and before fiba-asia.
obviously it has something to do with gma-7's relationship with solar sports :).but i am disappointed that mel tiangco info is wrong.twice she mentioned that the 2009 fiba-asia is a qualifying tournament for the 2012 london olympics :(.
and there are articles about powerade rp team in both the august 2009 issue of fhm and playboy philippines. i have my fhm copy and its a good read because yeng and other players were interviewed. plus there's a one-on-one interview with aguilar who was labeled as the "next big hope". i do not know about the content of playboy 'cause ive never tried reading that mag yet (200 is expensive :D).
