Philippine Basketball Association (oldest pro league in Asia)

there is this Kelvin dela Peņa...a 6'2 PG a Filipino who grew up in Canada, he's father is a former PBA player...although he is still playing in the NCAA Phils. for Mapua Cardinals, I believe that he can make it to the PBA soon.

I don't know any Fil-Canadian in the PBA...

it will be hard for guards to play in the pba especially with the abundance of talented guards we have now...

Any more info on this guy? Google doesn't bring up to many links.

Also according to the 2009 PBA Draft wikipedia page, some guy named Andrew Catigan went undrafted. Anyone know anything about him?

I remember reading about Labayen once. I think he played for the MBA's Pangasinan Wave.

Steward Granger 1986
Anthony Simms 1990

And the 7'0 Jim Zoet was discovered to play for Mariwasa-Honda in 1979 after his stint with the Canadian national team that played in Manila for the World Basketball Championship and placed 6th overall (behind Yugoslavia, USSR, Brazil, Italy and the US in order). Zoet wasn't the first seven-footer caucasian though that played in the PBA. In the 1977 Open Conference, 7/UP paraded the 7'0 Steve Stroud alongside the 6'7 Chris MacMurray (who then played for the Crispa Redmanizers in the 3rd Conference of the same season).

A footnote: Toyota once beat the Canadian national team (led by the eminent Leo Rautins and Jay Triano) in an exhibition game held at the Big Dome in 1978, a week or two before the World Basketball Championship. That same Toyota team likewise demolished the eventual world champions, the Yugoslavian national team (featuring Drazen Dalipagic, Dragen Kikanovic, Kresimir Cosic, Slavnic, Delibasic, Radovanovic) in their other exhibition game. Crispa wasn't as lucky though, losing to both teams. Toyota was allowed to suit up their twin imports, Carlos Terry and Bruce "Sky" King in those exhibition matches.

kaya pala

prior to the 1990 beijing ASIAD,the reason why some PBA fanatics still believes that the pba players are the best in asia because of these exhibition games with the world class teams in the world.

and when we lost to china by a wide margin of 65pts in the preliminary games in the 1990 beijing asiad, it really hit the fans bigtime and that's the start of the downfall of the PBA. the fans are not anymore the same as compared to the Crispa-toyota fanatics because it open the reality that the PBA players are not the best in asia.

so the PBA invited the chinese team to play as guest team in the pba. By using the pba rules, it will be a big disdavantages for the chinese team. Its just a marketing strategy so that die hard pba fanatics will go back to the pba.

what a marketing strategy by the PBA. niloko lang nila ang mga tao pinaniwala nila ang mga tao that the pba players are still the best in asia by inviting the chinese team to play in the pba after the 1990 beijing ASIAD. but the truth still the remain.PBA players are not the best in asia. look at the pba after 20years, 8th place in the last edition of the fiba asia championships and the sad truth is "nilalangaw ang mga venue kasi walang nanonood".

Kelvin dela Pena is originally from Calgary, AB; starred for in the NCAA for the Mapua Cardinals; and is on the Alaska Aces.

Dean Labayen played in the MBA for the Negros Slashers (with Dorian Pena and John Ferriols). He left a PBA contract from Pop Cola (I believe) on the table to finish his degree at York University in Toronto. He was injured his first year back in University ball and never made his way back.

Look out for more talented players to come out of Canada soon. There is a big Filipino community here and players are making noise. I expect some to play at the highest level in the Philippines.

I suddenly remembered Christopher Lafontaine, a burly 6'4" center who played briefly for the MBA's Davao Eagles in 1999. Chris is from Canada.
