What for u is the best national basketball team assembled ever by the PBA for the Asian Games? The PBA made a landmark decision by sending its 1st national squad in 1990 Beijing Asian Games coached by Robert Jaworski. The all-pro squad were bannered by superstars Ramon Fernandez, Alvin Patrimonio, Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic, Benjie Paras, Ronnie Magsanoc, Hector Calma, Yves Dignadice, Chito Loyzaga, Dante Gonzalgo, Zaldy Realubit and the late Rey Cuenco. The PBA's effort led us for a finals berth. However, a superior and taller chinese squad led by Ma Jian beat the filipinos, 90-76 for the gold.
For me, the best nat'l squad sent by the PBA was the Centennial Team in 1998 Bangkok Asian Games led by Johnny Abarrientos and Kenneth Duremdes. We won a bronze medal for that against Kazakhstan.

For me, talent wise, its the 2002 Busan Asiad team. They are also the tallest team when it comes to average height. They almost beat S.Korea if not for the bad officiating in the last two minutes of the game which favors the host team and also the desperation 3 point shot by lee sung min that went in. We could be the silvermedalist. But what is the weakness of this team is lack of heart. After the lost to China and S.Korea. they easily give up and gave the win to Kazahkstan in the battle for bronze. They didn't show their pride not unlike the Centennial Team in 1998, after the lost to China and S.Korea, they were still fired up and they show their pride. It was really a total team effort in the last 5 minutes of the game againts kazakhstan which is a see saw battle.

The best national team by the PBA is the 1990 RP-PBA National Team coached by Robert Jaworski... the team includes Alvin Patrimonio, Benjie Paras, Ramon Jaworski, Samboy Lim (named the 1990 Asiad Mythical Five Selection) and the 1990 PBA Most Valuable Player Allan Caidic (despite suffering an injury... he remain a threat to the oppositions)...
The team was only formed for two weeks but managed to finished second and captured the silver medal!...

i agree! for me they are the best. if only they have a lot of time for practice i think that time they have a chance to get the gold.

i do agree! :) but.. it is another "what if" about the RP team
so let's not take chances right now in our RP team
let's do the best formula possible and accept whatever the outcome is :)
as for me..I haven't watched the 1990 team back then
but i think it was the best PBA team sent to the Asian Games

my father told me na nambato pa nga daw ng mga battery (i assume yun pang remote control lang siguro) yun mga Chinese audience/fans nun 1990 Asian Games, just like what the Taiwanese fans did to Iloilo Megavolts in Jones Cup.
I'd like to ask the people who watched the games of the 1990 Robert Jaworski-coached PBA Squad. kindly confirm if its true or not? :)
i love basketball stories that's why I wanna know if its true then I'll scold my father later if his stories were fictional, joke! :)

1998 the almostall filipino rp centennial team squad they become jones cup champiuons this shows you do not need to win in asian games to earn the asians respect in basketball in 1990's they will won if they have better preparation

I think 1998 Centennial Team was the most prepared even than the current team (unless if you guys count those in 2005 and 2006 non-FIBA stints... )... that's my opinion! :D ... the only reason they ended up winning bronze in the Asian Games because they focus on beating China and forgetting about the other opponents like South Korea (same with the 2002 RP Team)...

i think Centennial team was the best in terms of talent and preparation but regardless what tourney they are preparing for, i think today's national team will be the strongest ever.. its just that we don't have the caliber of Samboy Lim and Kenneth Duremdes who can hangs in the air...

We don't really need the likes of Samboy Lim or Michael Jordan... we need someone like Allan Caidic, Steve Kerr, and anyone that could shoot and some one that could rebound a lot!

I would say Mark Caguioa and Danny Seigle are the two most important players in the current squad!.... during the Champions Cup, Seigle was named in the First Team Mythical Selection while Caguioa was named in the Second Mythical Selection and an offer to play in the Iran's professional league...

I still think we are in need of a streak shooter like allan caidic or reggie miller. :D MAybe 4 shooters with the same caliber of allan caidic woll definitely break the defenses down.

Yeah I agree... the closest thing we have right now is Ren-Ren Ritualo... followed by Dondon Hontiveros... but they're not as consistent as the Triggerman...

i always thought that the best was the one that features Abbarientos, Caidic and Paras.
Abbarientos - gifted, athletic. no one can deny that he is the best point guard in Asia that time. sorry for those who missed Johnny, he' sooo damn good!
Caidic - ilista mo na. the best outside shooter of his time and can create his own shots too.
Paras - power, heart and consistent player. maybe because he's another filipino hybrid

Yeah that's true... but I don't remember Caidic, Abarrientos and Paras in one RP team... Caidic played with Paras in 1990 Asian Games... while Abarrientos played with Caidic in 1994 and 1998 Asian Games, as well as the 1998 Jones Cup.... and that's it!...
Btw, they are indeed the kind of players we need right now!

that will be the best team we had.
i have a doubt on Alapag's playmaking. he takes too much time to create plays.
the present team lacks some heart and fighting attitude

Some players are going to be replaced for the next few weeks but that doesn't mean they won't play for the national team anymore... but they have earn it in order to be selected to play for the national team again... and I think most of the players earned their place in the squad but comparing them with the teams of the past.. yeah they do lack of heart and fighting attitude... but this current squad is unpredictable... we'll never know what they're capable of... just because we performed poorly in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup... thats doesn't mean we are going to perform poorly in the upcoming tournaments (Jones Cup, Manila Invitational, FIBA Asia Championship)...

i dont know if they are unpredictable. PBA can be viewed everywhere, broadcasted overseas and even in youtube. same attitude the whole year round and coach by the same old coaching style. lets hope those foreign trips will help though it didnt show gaging from their asian cup performance in Iran.
the most unpredictable player could have been Helterbrand but i dont know why he's so quite. i dont want to know why. i just hope things will give us lots of lucks ahead

Well, they only prepare for two weeks. We were bracketed with china in the elimination and lost by 60points. In the quarterfinals, as far as i remember, they beat all their opponents and i really dont know what happened to S.Korea. In the Semis, they were playing againts Japan and they were leading in the 1st half. In the 2nd half, It was the 3 point shooting of Chito loyzaga,Ronnie Magsanoc and Allan Caidic that gave the victory to us. In the finals, we lost to china by 15 points below if im not mistaken.

Tama ba tong knowledge ko, kindly correct me if I'm wrong..
The Asian Games basketball is a no-bearing tournament to qualify for the other FIBA-sanctioned tournaments like World Championships..
Before the RP NT was banned by FIBA in 2006, Commissioner Noli Eala said na the PBA wanted to be competetive internationally as well as locally, something like that. Meaning isasacrifice ng PBA ang pagsali sa Asian Championship pero ang Asian Games e hindi na nila commitment dahil magcoconflict sa new PBA calendar and total it doesn't have that same bearing with Asian Basketball Championship/ABC. Kaya the option of putting-up a team with amateur stand-outs including Ken Bono, JC Intal and Edwin Asoro was in the open.
Unfortunately it didn't prosper because of the conflict between BAP and Pilipinas Basketball which resulted to a FIBA ban. It's a good thing that we're back and SBP's basketball program is somehow better than the BAP before. Now, the BIG QUESTION IS sino naman ang mga ipapadala sa 2010 Asian Games Basketball, is it the pros or the amateurs?

Am new here in this forum, & I just noticed that there are a lot of Pinoy basketball fans here who seem to be quite young.
Anyway, just wanted to share some earlier blogs of mine about the past National teams we've sent since 1990:
* Remembering The 1990 Asian Games Philippine National Basketball Team (http://rhk111.byethost14.com/2006/08/26/remembering-the-1990-asian-games-philippine-national-basketball-team/)

Hopefully it will get most Pinoys out there to be more objective when it comes to the Philippines' standing in International basketball.
