I think it's on the title (July 2). I hope that the Philippines sends it true National Team. If we do that, then maybe, championship is not that far. :)

it's unsure yet whether Team Pilipinas will be participating in this year's Jones Cup. there's no word yet from the SBP and the tournament hasn't been mentioned in any of its itineraries.

THE TOURNAMENT has always been held in Chinese-Taipei.
Small Asian Cup
FOR A tournament to last for 29 years is a big achievement. The annual William Jones Cup is even older than most major pro or semi-pro Asian leagues save for the Philippine Basketball Association.
It's not confined as an Asian Cup as the Jones Cup in its long history has managed to attract competition from top countries in Europe, Africa, Australia and the Americas.

SMC-RP 5 UP FOR MANAGEMENT TEAM EVALUATION ON MAY 31
Well plot whats best for the team Eala
Tuesday, 29 May 2007
BANGKOK, Thailand An hour of reckoning loomed over San Miguel-Pilipinas even as it celebrated with quiet restraint its moment of triumph in the 7th Southeast Asian Basketball Men's Championship at Ratchaburi, a rustic town 100 kilometers west of the capital.
There was no frenzied outburst at the final buzzer. No player pileup. No victory ride. No tears falling, nor big hugs all around.
Instead there was a slow procession from the locker room back to the playing court for the awarding ceremony, a somber dinner at the hotel restaurant, and national coach Chot Reyes talking about three players Willie Miller of Alaska, Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia Realty and Gave Norwood, a Fil-Am who played for George Mason U.
A date was also set: May 31.
Unless conflicting schedules force its postponement, five men PBA chairman Ricky Vargas, Commissioner Noli Eala, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Patrick Gregorio, RP team manager Robert Non and Reyes would gather on Thursday to make an evaluation on the final composition of the national team going to Tokushima, Japan for the FIBA-Asia Men's Championship on July 28-Aug. 5.
This much is known: A new training pool would be formed where Miller and Williams, if their ball clubs allow them, and Norwood, if he is found, would be
added.
Two new assistant coaches would be appointed to the team and the names of Joel Banal, Jong Uichico, Binky Favis and Alfrancis Chua were mentioned.
A doctor would be assigned to the national team, and possibly a nutritionist.
Lastly, proposed foreign trips to Belgrade and Qatar, preparatory to Tokushima, the qualifier to the Beijing Olympics next year, might be scrapped in favor of the nine-games-in-nine days William Jones Cup in Taiwan where China, Korea, Chinese-Taipei and Japan will be playing.
"I think that would be a more attractive tournament," said Eala, who minced no words on the imperativeness of change within the team which ran roughshod over the SEABA competition by an average margin of 38.5 points.
"Although winning restores our confidence after Tehran, this is not the time to celebrate or be complacent," he said. "There's still much room for improvement, especially in the scouting of opponents, the strengthening and conditioning of the players, and the composition of the coaching staff."
Eala said they will "regroup" in Manila "to plot what's best" for the team.
"While I don't want to second-guess coach Chot, the training program, I feel, needs to be more focused on areas of weaknesses which I don't think would be addressed by the planned trips to Belgrade and Qatar," he said. "A balance has to be struck."
Gregorio, appointed to the SBP post only weeks ago, said two major concerns need to be analyzed the significance of the foreign trips and the conditioning
and focus of the team.
"While winning the SEABA is a wonderful gift, the best is yet to come," he said.
Non went to specifics in identifying points of attention: mental preparedness, conditioning, and total team effort.
"There should be no superstar in this team," he said. "Everybody should accept the role assigned to him."
Among those painfully exposed during the weeklong battle with overmatched opponents from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand were the all-pro team's slow starts, difficulty defending quick-moving offenses, generally unremarkable outside shooting (except for Renren Ritualo's 9 of 12 three-pointers against Malaysia), and ball movement woes.
"We're not necessarily saying that players had to be changed," Eala stressed. "But if there's a need to augment the lineup, especially if we have players not performing as expected, then this should be considered."
The SMC-RP squad returns home Tuesday, with the uncertainty of the near future hovering over it and the promise of an Olympic experience a bit farther in
realization.

My proposed lineup for the RP team:
1. Asi Taulava = 6'9
2. Mick Pennisi = 6'9 (can shoot in the 3 pt area)
3. Yancy de Ocampo = 6'9 (can shoot in the 3 pt area)
4. Sonny Thoss (for defense/offense with a good height)= 6'8
5. Danny Seigle = 6'6
6. Kelly Williams = 6'6
7. Kerby Raymundo = 6'6 or Ranidel de Ocampo 6'6
8. Mark Caguia = 6'1
9. Don Don Hontiveros = 6'2
10. Jimmy Alapag = 5'9
11. Gabe Norwood = 6'5 PG/SF (if available) if not then Willie Miller = 5'11
12. Ren Ren Ritualo = 6'1
My first five(5) for the RP team
1. Asi Taulava = 6'9
2. Sonny Thoss = 6'8
3. Danny Seigle = 6'6
4. Kelly Williams = 6'6
5. Jimmy Alapag = 5'9

Miller for Alapag should be considered.
Going back to 2005 and 2006 line up, so much have been changed. In the initail composition of the RP Team, alapag was not among them just to name afew. We need a PG that can do damage offensively also and alapag is not having so much about that compared to what Miller can do. Alapag loves to kick the ball out even if he's free to shoot. While Miller can really break the zone defense when he drives to the basket. I have nothing against Alapag, it's just so happen that we need to augment the team composition which Miller can make a BIG difference when he's with the team.
I remember how Miller shattered the zone defense of our opponents in international tournaments when he starts to drive to the basket. He can shoot, run and defend. A point guard like Alapag is good but not good enough when all he can do is to pass and run. Though it really matters when you can do that like ALapag, the point is, we need to score too and that you can count on from Miller.
The rest of the positions like 3 & 4 were already mentioned by some forumers. I guess some names will be replaced by Chot.
In case Alapag's performance really impressed Chot then he should consider replacing Hilterbrand. Need not to say the reason. Just look at his performance in SEABA and Asia Champions Cup, and you will definitely find the answers.

1. Miller for Alapag. Maybe! By the way he played in the recent PBA games. Maybe BRO!
2. Your right! but how can we invest for #5 position, if we don't have such position in our country that can make a difference...I think we need to focus on defense.
Best example: The Glory Road Movie.
They are the underdog in that tournament, but, what happened? they won the championship...Its the character of the player, that i want to emphasize for the RP team. Even though we don't have a big/tall player in the lineup, we can still win and defeat other teams in ASIA...

Hmmm.... the names sound okay to me... :)
With regards to the No. 5 position, we really can do little this time since we can hardly find a guy bigger and stronger than taulava. I was hoping that we can find someone to help taulava underneath the basket but not neccessarily bigger and stronger than him since it's next to impossible. More on, It would like having 2 taulava on the floor when the situation arises.
players need to be replaced are
alapag
hilterbrand

villanueva
ocampo

Yeah but they have a dominating center dean latin and tall athletic forwards.hehehe. But seriously though the RP players must develop their Filipino fighting spirit and more on defense as well.

Vladski, there is NO WAY Choach Chot will replace BOTH Alapag and Helterbrand. One of them, maybe, and it's most likely Helterbrand.
The PG is instrumental to team chemistry and replacing both at this juncture will prove very risky. Alapag appears more effective in the international game owing to his pass-first mentality and very controlled quarterbacking. Both JJ and Miller are a joy to watch but they can be erratic and TO-prone. Besides, you can't have two scoring PGs. One must be a pass-first PG and the other a scorer-disher.
Helterbrand seems to be struggling for some reason. It could be his alleged injury, but I think it's mainly due to his style of play -- which relies on quickness and finesse. In the PBA, JJ can get by with his quick crossovers to "glide" past defenders because of the no-handcheck rule.
In FIBA, handchecks and body contact can neutralize his quickness (plus the other guards can be as quick as him if not quicker). Rough contact can really throw off a finesse player's game, both physically and mentally. This is JJ's dilemma, I think.
Alapag, though smaller, appears to have a stronger body (dunking at 5'8" is a sure sign of tremendous core strength) and better conditioning (heard the mighty mouse has the most disciplined training regimen in the team).
Miller, I think, can also handle contact better than JJ. As for Norwood, I'm not really too hot about him until I actually see him play. But definitely, Alapag must stay. I also hope JJ regains his confidence quickly.
AFAIK, the ideal scenario according to Commish Eala is that they will bring all 15 players (including Miller, Williams and Norwood) to the Jones Cup and shuffle the 12-man lineup with the 3 reserves. They might even bring all 15 players to Tokushima and make a decision on the final 12 right then and there.

ERECTUSS, I suppose you did a good point there. Please note that i never mentioned to replace both alapag and hilterbrand. What did i remeMber is to replace alapag, otherwise replace Hilterbrand.
I understand that replacing the PG at this stage is very crucial and risky. But what is more risky to have a PG that can't score, lest directs a play for the team?
As i have said, if alapag has impressed coach chot, then he should stay. But he should let Hilterbrand go and have him replaceD by Miller.
That's all what i was saying.
For Norwood, chot might consider him for a match up against bigger point guards in Japan tournament, as alapag is too short and almost non existent come to face a much bigger PG. But infusing Norwood at this juncture is too Risky too as he has proven nothing yet to deserve such crucial role for the nationa team. But we couldn't disregard the fact that we might be facing bigger PG in the tournament, so Gabe could be an effective weapon offensively and defensively should alapag wouldn't able to deliver against a much bigger PG. PG position directs the play for the team, remove them and the team will collapse no matter how good are your forwards and center on the floor. So I guess CHot will definitely make that consideration in replacing the PG same goes to the rest of the positions.

The problem with asi taulava is his defense. Even in the pba he's not really known to be a good shotblocker nor intimidating defensively speaking. TEAM PILIPINAS problem lies also at the interior defense, it is weak inside the blue paint.
Willy Miller is a great offensive player but he is not a very effective point guard. He fails in comparison to either Alapag and Helterbrand who both have natural instincts quarterbacking a team. If we believe on Miller's penetration skills to break the zone defense, I think Alapag and Helterbrand being quicker and slicker should be a lot better penetrators than Miller. I have several tapes of the national team with Miller at the helm and he is so slow for a point guard in pushing the ball and does not create many open situations for his teammates. Miller is dependent on his one-on-one wizardry to break the zone but that won't happen most of the time.
I am not sure about where Chot Reyes would insert Miller on the rotation. In my opinion, he does not have any room anymore in the national team. Miller's supposed value on the team is already covered perfectly well by Mark Caguioa, in the same manner that he cannot dislodge Renren Ritualo coz Renren is the only pure shooter on the team (in the mold of a Caidic that is essential in international competition). Now, to dislodge Dondon Hontiveros is the most remote possibility because Hontiveros is the backbone of the shooting guard area, he is the most complete by doing offense and defense with almost equal effectivity.
I really hope Miller would not be our other point guard because for so many times that I have watched my tapes of the 2002 national team, one of the biggest disasters of the RP team in 2002 was the mistake of Jong Uichico in listing only one pure point-guard in Olsen Racela that when he gets in foul trouble, Noy Castillo, who was not a natural point guard would come in to take over only to hamper the offense of the national team. Racela rode the bench most of the time against Korea, Japan and China in the first half of the game. If he only played more minutes, our game with Japan would have been won more comfortably, against Korea we would have controlled more the ball that could have completed our upset, and against China maybe the lead would not be that big.
What we need is size in the "2" position for match up problem. Miller being short did not only made himself unwarranted but also, would only unnecessarily load the "2" position where we already have Caguioa, Hontiveros and Ritualo. If Miller would add size, then we have to take him in but he is not.
Definitely, Chot Reyes knows best(I always put my trust on him) and he has his reasons to take Miller in, but from where I stand right now, I cannot see the need for a Willy Miller.
Kelly Williams is approved and he may need to replace Tony dela Cruz. Williams brings lots of versatility to the team, with his size and athleticism, he can switch from 2 to 3 to 4 when needed. What I only need to ask from Williams is he needs to improve his basketball sense. Williams is still young and needs to mature further.
Gabe Norwood should be our resident utility guy. I have to admit I have not seen him play but with our passion to the game and just like everybody else in this site, common sense should tell us that this guy can also solve our match up problems especialy on defense. There have been so many articles on Norwood's proven athleticism (he is the best dunker in George Mason) and scouts said he can play both the point and the wing areas. But what made me think why Norwood would be our main utility man is because belonging in the NCAA DIV-1 school and managed to reach the final four simply means Norwood is so equip with defensive sense in basketball. The US NCAA ranks puts too much emphasis on defense that when you cannot defend, you have no place to be there.
With Williams and Norwood around who are both 6-5, they will solidify the rotation both in the "2" and "3" spots. When we say solidifying the rotation, it means the rotation just covers the desire on quickness, size and athleticism that should compliment the need on offense and defense.
China used to eat us alive on the 2 and 3 spots coz while we have 6-0 or-6-1players at the off guard spot and only 6-2 or 6-3 size at the shooting forward spot, China has 6-6 or 6-5 players both on those positions. Nowadays, it is not only China that has 6-5 or 6-6 sizes in their 2 and 3 spots but the rest of the middle east countries as well.
Lastly, we may need to put more beef and strenght in the power forward spot. I am not sure who is weaker. Kerby or Ranidel, but I feel we need the brute of an Erik Menk who I hope if healthy, would be taken in by Chot. Menk struggled on his offense in the 2002 Asian games but he made sure he did his dirty job underneath to help the Philippines and he was indeed tenacious off the boards.
Raymundo and de Ocampo may be just equal in offensive ability but I am firm Keryby is far better a defensive player than Ranidel. I have a few tapes of Kerby being with the national team in 2005 for Chot Reyes' training team and he showed that he won't simply let up on the defensive end. Kerby was part of Chot's RP team in 2005 that played the Australian perennial champs Sydney Kings that showed his defensive prowess. Kerby did not allow the Ausies to get easy points in the shaded lane that made RP loss just by four 64-60 despite the Ausies huge advantage on size and heft.

In my opinion, he does not have any room anymore in the national team. i agree with you Jawo. So far Miller cannot replace the position of alapag or heltebrand because he is not pure PG, and he's to slow for that position.

My proposed lineup for the RP team:
1. Asi Taulava = 6'9
2. Mick Pennisi = 6'9 (can shoot in the 3 pt area)
3. Yancy de Ocampo = 6'9 (can shoot in the 3 pt area)
4. Sonny Thoss (for defense/offense with a good height)= 6'8
5. Danny Seigle = 6'6
6. Kelly Williams = 6'6
7. Kerby Raymundo = 6'6 or Ranidel de Ocampo 6'6
8. Mark Caguia = 6'1
9. Don Don Hontiveros = 6'2
10. Jimmy Alapag = 5'9
11. Gabe Norwood = 6'5 PG/SF (if available) if not then Willie Miller = 5'11
12. Ren Ren Ritualo = 6'1 (our secret weapon) can hit 10 3pts shot a game...
My first five(5) for the RP team
1. Asi Taulava = 6'9
2. Sonny Thoss = 6'8
3. Danny Seigle = 6'6
4. Kelly Williams = 6'6
5. Jimmy Alapag = 5'9
One serious problem coach chot is facing right now, is probably finalizing the final lineup. In my opinion, the first draft of the team was more of a balance team, only having 2 bigmen and 2 backup bigforwards in the likes of ranidel and kerby. this are my reasons why i think, its hard to pull either kerby or ranidel out of the NT:
1. In the Nt lineup, only Asi, Danny S. and Kerby R. are legitimate post presence. If we took out Kerby, then it will only give us Asi and Danny S.as our post player, but we have to remember that Danny will be playing more of the SF spot, rather than PF slot, so it means, we now have Asi as our only post player. Coach Chot thought that getting Kerby into the NT, will give ASi the much needed backup at the post. Since, chot wants to keep all his players fresh, some says it is most likely that we keep Kerby in the NT.
2. Now, about Ranidel, he's the only player in the NT, that plays big with his size. He's the kind of player that you would trust in both offense and defense. Remember guys, Ranidel was one of the player that inflict a lot of damage against Lebanon, and he proved it by defendng Fadi and dunking over Lebanon's bigmen. Ranidel is also a very good shooter, having a high percentage in the 3pt area made chot decide to include this guy in the NT. Versatility is one factor that coaches are looking for in a player. though he's only 6'5 and weighs about 210lbs. Ranidel has a pair of long arms, a vertical leap of 34inches and has a good body condition. in my opinion, those are good upsides for a player, and for a coach, thats a positive sign.
now, heres the deal, if we took one/both of them out of the team, then coach chot would need to reevalaute all his players, since the tasks of both of this players are much needed.
1. if you took kerby out, asi is the only post player. if that happens, we might an exhausted asi every after game. but kerby isnt showing the toughness that coach chot needs. will you take kerby out and replace him with thoss, considering the consequences?
2. if you took ranidel out, we'll lose a solid defender and muscle player at the 4 and 3 spot. we'll also lose a smart player, a 3pt shooter and a good role player. if danny S., Asi gets double team, no one will come from the weakside help. our only way is to kickout the ball to Alapag, hontiveros, ritualo. our options will be limited in the offensive side. So, what do you think guys, is he in or out? :)

Btw, next to the US, the Philippines is the country with the most Jones Cup titles (3) since the tournament's inception in 1977. The Philippines won the Cup in 1981, 1985, and 1998. The only other multiple title holder is Chinese Taipei, which won in 2001 and 2004.

exactly man... anyway going back to the topic, this jones cup is like a preview on the things to come in fiba-asia champs... it was said that 8 teams will be represented by their NTs and to make it tougher, these are the 8 NT's that can be called contenders and have a chance to qualify in the olympics... can't wait to see this, i hope they do telecast it here... i expect a lot of surprises in this tournament...

Question, will Tseng of Chinese Taipei play for their NT? I don't know his full name but the way I remember it, his height is 6'10. They were 2nd placer in the last jones cup, Tseng scored 28 points thelp their team win against our NT.

Japan's Coaching Staff
Japan's NT head coach Suzuki :D and with only 1 assistant coach?:D plus 2 trainer?:D
if my memore serves me right, even with just few weeks of training, Suzuki managed Japan to placed 6th in the 2006 Asian Games:D
Suzuki led the Sea Horses to Japan Super league titles in 2003 and 2004 and four straight All-Japan tournament crowns from 2002 to 2005 :D and promised to give Japan a slot in the 2008 Olympics :D
I wonder how will he fare well against Coach Chot Reyes if ever:D

There will be a lot of scouting for Fiba Asia Championship teams that will participate in the Jones Cup, I think, full-scale battle and strategies are to be reserved for the greater matches in Tokushima. :)
To the Filipinos here, mga pare koy, masyado na yata updated ang mga foreigner dito sa RP team, hehe. Let's post something general, wag yun puro atin lang. :)
If you have infos about other teams, might as well post it here for the benefit of the RP team fans. :) tnx!

They have not much to hide I guess, and not much to show as well.
Not going to the Jones Cup is not cowardness my friend.
Maybe they'll just wait for the NT's to come in their land.
They're grouped in an easy batch, they may top it though in Tokushima.

if the Phil. can place at least 3rd in this year's Jones Cup with a scores not less than 6 margin, then i guess we have a very good chance in Japan.. for me, the Jones Cup is the final test for the RP5.. i'm sure 90% of what you'll see in there you'll got to see also in Japan tourney.. probably a little adjustments and their secret tactics which Chot quoted will only be displayed in the Asian Championship in Japan.

here's the answer for you Donmar.... if your thinking why i said Jones Cup is the final test for them, well its bcoz most of the other NT are playing in there while our pocket tournament just have four teams including RP5... it would just simply to keep the rust off from our team..

I wish someone record those games (William Jones Cup and FIBA Asia Championship) and then upload it to the net.... I'm sick of reading on-line newspapers and not watching the real game...
That's how sad basketball here in New Zealand:(... They only show basketball tournament with New Zealand on it... and if they're losing... they won't show it :( ...
Even in boxing... last year a Filipino boxer beat the shit out of a New Zealander in Auckland but they only announced the win in an late evening news (when most people were already asleep) and didn't show it on TV...
Cuz don't feel so bad. It's the same situation here in Sydney.:D

China and Taiwan has/still has political issues and disputes..am I right? :)
I think Chinese cagers going to Taiwan is not a good idea considering the Taiwan's questionable homecourt advantage during the Jones Cup Tournament and we might eventually see a Kung-Fu match on the basketball court if ever these two teams meet at Taiwan's turf. :)

this is a very interesting tournament because if im not mistaken 8 countries will be represented by their NT's... but i don't think all of the teams here will give their 100% especially RP. RP will play here cautiously, aware that most of the teams here are after RP, since most of them have no idea on how RP plays... there will be a lot of scouts here... rp will send around 14-15 players in this tournament with seigle playing only limited minutes because of injury... the good thing about rp is that we have a very deep bench which makes us very hard to scout... that's why whether we field in our 2nd stringers we still have a chance to win... i think teams like jordan and lebanon will give their best in this tournament since they no longer have anything to hide, coz most of the teams already know their top players, ei. khatib for lebanon and wright for jordan...

Jones Cup will be used by the Asian NT's to gauge their own team and others as well. :)

apiSigbinz
06-25-2007, 07:17 AM
total points of your team
Quotient = ________________________
total points of opponents
here's an example of a quotient system involving 3 teams...
Results between A, B, C:
.......................A - B...........82 - 75
.......................A - C...........77 - 80
.......................B - C...........88 - 77
Team......Games.......Wins........Losse......Point .....Difference.....Goal Average
A .......... 2 ............ 1 ............ 1 ......... 3 ........159:155 ........1.0258
B .......... 2 ............ 1 ............ 1 ......... 3 ........163:159 ........1.0251
C .......... 2 ............ 1 ............ 1 ......... 3 ........157:165 ........0.9515
Therefore: 1st. A, 2nd. B and 3rd. C
If the goal average is the same for the three teams, the final placing will be determined from the results of all their games played in the group.

Well, I am really excited about the outcome yet. With Kelly, James and Eric (I hope Gabe can make it) an additional ingredients for the tasty RP TEAM, On my assessment, I am 85% sure that we can beat the young, tall and faster American-select christian team "AIA".
Yeah, I saw him in action against the Lebanese Team at the SJ Arena, we have the same thought about Ranidel. He looks like a junior-college next door guy, but he's an effective player both offense and defense.

I have not watched a PBA game in a while, but last night, I saw Sonny Thoss, he has grown and I think may be a back up center for asi. He has bulked up a lot, and his post offense improved a lot. the coach should consider him.

Yeah, there so many peeps here who has a same thought like mine... Just like what I said on my previous thread, some Asian countries are developing so fast. Even the U.S. were suprised about the fast developments of some countries from South America and Europe. But here in Asia, it's not only China to be afraid of, Syria, Iran, Chinese-Taipei and Kazakhstan must be consider..I am not suprise if Kazakhstan will be the next powerhouse 3-5 years from now...

Thoss is still in the RP Team pool primarily due to his potential. He was not included though in the final 15 selected for the FIBA Asia Championships mainly because his offense was still suspect. It was only just this PBA season that his offense progressed significantly and no doubt he would be in the RP Team sooner than expected.
