ARG - Home-based stars get better of imports

MAR DEL PLATA (Liga Nacional) - The Liga Nacional's Argentinian stars ran out 92-89 winners over the league's foreign players in the All Stars clash at Polideportivo stadium.

Leonardo Gutierrez of Ben Hur inspired the Argentinian side to victory, scoring 24 points in a man-of-the-match performance, while Paolo Quinteros of Boca Juniors netted 18 points.

The result followed a 120-107 win for the Liga Nacional's 'A' team over the TNA side, comprised of second division players.

Experienced River Plate star Bruno Labaque scored 24 points as captain of the Liga Nacional outfit and took the Most Valuable Player prize.

PA Sports

I was wondering how serious was this game between the imports and the local players?

Did the local players play as though they were representing Argentina?

Now That's Gold! reading that Leo Gutierrez got the MVP award. He's an awesome player. I saw him play in the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia and he played well. Against Team USA he showed that he can mix it up with Mike Miller, Matrix, J. O'Neal as well as K-Mart. What really impressed him is when Argentina played against Brazil, which featured Nene and Varejao he killed both, whoever matched up on him even though he's only 6'7" and the two teenagers (back then) stood at 6"11" each.

In Australia we have an import by the name of Cortez Groves who played for Atenas where he averaged 17 points and five assists per game said that the imports in the Liga Nacional get fired pretty quickly and very rarely do they stay a whole season like himself. Is that true that they're that harsh on the imports? It's just that he mentioned that in an interview and is the reason why he prefered playing in our league (still all respect to your league because it's developed your stars that head off to the ACB and Serie A) than yours because the blame of loosing is spread out to everyone.

Cheers.

Yeah, I loved watching Gutierrez. He really believe that he could play in the NBA and do an excellent job. I love him.

In first place, Thanks Saski for posting about the All stars game, I've been so busy lately, and I still will be busy for some more time.

About the game, it was good the Argentinean team had some very good players in it, like Gutierrez, Roman Gonzalez, Sebastian Ginobili, Paolo Quinteros, and Gabriel Mikulas, etc, all of them good enough to play for the Argentinean NT.

Nah... it was a friendly and fun game, they all (Argentinians and imports) tried to do nice plays and a good show.

Now, about Gutierrez, he is a very good player, he is a Argentina "A" NT player, no doubts about that. he has improved he 3 pt shot a lot , so he is very dangerous, because he can score from long or from under the basket and is also inteligent and with good passing skills. Despite all of that, he is no NBA, he is just not that good.

He could play in Europe, that's for sure and play good, but here he is king, and I think he likes to be a king

Speaking in General, the imports are brought here to be the Stars in their respective teams, to led their teams to the victory, to be the first offensive option, etc. and they get more money than the local players for that, so yeah, they better do all of that or they are fired and replaced by another import.

Now, speaking about Atenas, it is a special case, Atenas is too big and has never need much from their imports, since it always had the best players, Marcelo Milanesio, Hector "Pichi" Campana, Juan Espil, Fabricio Oberto, Diego Osella, Walter Herrmann, Leandro Palladino, Bruno Labaque, Patricio Prato, Roberto Gabini, Matias Lezcano, etc I just can recall about four important foreigners in Atenas History, Donald Chester Jones (80's), Jervis Cole, Steven Edwards and Josh Pittmann.
Now things have changed and Atenas need a lot from its import players so they are under a lot of pressure, some great import players have been huge in other teams and in other leagues, but have fail in Atenas, just like Joe Bunn, JJ Eubanks, Jason Ousborne, to name a few.
The thing with Cortez Groves (by the way he didn't averaged 5 ast, his official numbers were 16.3ppg, 2.1 rpg, 1 apg, 1.3 spg and 1.8 topg in 25.3 mpg.) is that he was very spectacular great dunks, etc, he is a very good scorer, but he just cannot lead any team, he took so many bad decicions on the key games and Atenas got eliminated from the Argentinian league in quarterfinals!!! it was only the second time in Atenas history that the team didn't got at least to semifinals, so imagine, somebody had to be blamed for this, and there where found 3 guilty, The coach, Mario Milanesio (older brother of Marcelo), Cortez Groves and Josh Pittmann who was tested positive on Marihuana and suspended just days before the start of the playoffs, Pittmann was the first offensive option in Atenas and after lossing him Groves was supossed to became the first option, but he failed.
