SLOW-STARTING SMC-RP 5 MAKES IT 3 STRAIGHT IN SEABA JOUST
Ritualo, Caguioa star in Nationals' 30-pt scorching of Malaysia
Sunday, 27 May 2007

Image

RATCHABURI, Thailand – Renren Ritualo, the forgotten gunner on the star-studded San Miguel-Pilipinas team, emerged from the shadows Sunday and reintroduced himself in fiery fashion.

With the game against Malaysia tied 21-all early in the second quarter, Ritualo came off the dark end of the bench and sparked a blinding flash of offense, burying five straight three-point shots and setting off a scorching 20-4 run that left the Nationals’ third opponent withered.

The breathtaking 102-72 victory moved SMC-RP within a win over host Thailand Monday of sweeping the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Men’s Championship and of securing the first berth to the Beijing Olympics qualifier, the FIBA-Asia Men’s Championship July 28-August 5 in Tokushima, Japan

Ritualo was flawless from beyond the arc until the half was nearly over. His sixth attempt rimmed out but Mick Pennisi and Mark Caguioa picked up the pace, hitting three more as the Nationals wound up the half with nine 3-pointers, the Malaysians’ zone hapless in the wake of SMC-RP’s torrid offensive display.

Malaysia had four 3-point shots in the first quarter, following the trend set by the Nationals’ first two opponents – Singapore and Indonesia.

But the script called for a Philippine explosion in the second quarter and that was what Ritualo provided, dropping one long-distance bomb after another during the period and then adding four more in the second half to fortify his sharpshooter’s reputation.

“Mission accomplished today,” beamed RP coach Chot Reyes. “Tomorrow, hopefully, we achieve our goal.”

Reyes said the ultimate goal was to get to the Olympics via the FIBA-Asia tournament, but that winning the SEABA title was also a must.

The Thais shouldn’t be much of a problem despite the hometown crowd behind them, and the road to Tokushima appears paved every step of the way.

Ritualo has been a quiet presence in the national team, his minutes dwindled by the searing explosiveness of Caguioa.

But when the Malaysians threw a constricting zone defensive stance at the Nationals, Ritualo found his golden moment to shine.

“He’s our zone-buster,” said Reyes of Ritualo. “That’s the reason he’s on this team.”

Ritualo, who finished with 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting from outside the rainbow, admitted he was consciously trying to prove he deserved to stay on in the lineup.

“Malaking hirap din naman ang dinanas namin sa U.S. at lalo na sa Iran,” he said. “Siguro naman, deserving kaming lahat manatili dito.”

The Nationals missed their first couple of shots and quickly fell behind 0-6, and it was not until six minutes into the first quarter that they leveled at 10-all on a basket by Danny Seigle.

A 3-pointer gave Malaysia back the lead, but the Nationals scored 11 straight points. Back-to-back triples for Malaysia cut SMC-RP’s advantage to 21-19 at the end of quarter just as Ritualo was starting to heat up preparatory to lighting up the New Ratchaburi Gymnasium.

Caguioa added 20 and Seigle 14, with his consecutive in-your-face slam dunks in the third quarter typifying the Nationals’ dominance by opening a 68-45 spread.

The 16 3-pointers for the Philippines were more than its combined output in its games with Singapore and Indonesia.

Thailand was battling Indonesia at press time, with the second ticket to Tokushima still up for grabs among them and the Malaysians.

The scores:

SMC-RP 102– Ritualo 27, Caguioa 20, Seigle 14, Taulava 9, Alapag 9, Helterbrand 7, Pennisi 6, De Ocampo 4, Villanueva 4, Canaleta 2, Raymundo 0, Hontiveros 0.

MALAYSIA 72 – Satyaseelan 23, Guganeswaran 14, Koh 10, Chai 8, Chee 7, Soo 6, Chan 2, Ng 2, Tong 0, Tan 0, Chow 0, Won 0.

Quarters: 21-19; 53-36; 75-51; 102-72.

Chot has to make some adjustments in the present lineup...we are just too small...but anyway..let's just hope for the best for our team this coming Fiba_Asia Champs...maybe the players needs to take some "growth balls" from a chinese drug store...:D

i'm worried with enrico's temper...remember back in 2002 when he drag stephen howards leg? :)

its too late to change 3 or 4 players in the current line-up.. our flow of offense might change.. i would rather change 1 or 2 players at the most..
menk for raymundo and k.williams for Tony Dela Cruz.. :)

menk is a good defensive and rebounder..can outrebound taller centers..remember 2002 againts korea??he outrebounded the big monkey. (forgot his name)

kelly williams.....oh well.what more can you say...he's much beter than tony dela cruz.. :)

As for miller - ritualo..i'll have to stick with ritualo..ren2x (ritualo) is a a streak and more exlplosive 3pt shooter than miller..he can make 5-7 3pts a night..and that is what we need in international competitions..

did he body slam him before dragging him by his foot? or was he alrady down when he was dragged?
there was this other incident by Pennisi. where this guy whose spinal column was broken? did Pennisi body slam him or was that an accident?

Bro! for me its Sonny Thoss (6'8) for Villanueva (6'5) more height and agility. Helterbrand is ok for me, K Williams for Tony dela Cruz..Bro don't under estimate the capability of Don Don Hontiveros..If Norwood is available, he is a good replacement for helterbrand, wow a 6'5 Guard for the RP team...How about Yancy de Ocampo (6'9, with a soft touch from the 3 pt range, he can also rebound and defend more bigger player) for Kerby Raymundo?

Just a suggestion bro!

Go RP TEAM!!!

rico nested his one arm against howard's chest and brought him down on the floor. from that spot in cubao, rico dragged howard all along aurora boulevard up to ateneo.:D oh no, i think marikina...:D :D :D

there was this other incident by Pennisi. where this guy whose spinal column was broken? did Pennisi body slam him or was that an accident?

it was a hard rebounding play but pennisi did not intend to bring eugene tejada down. it was one of the freakest accidents that ever happened in the PBA. perhaps worse than what happened to samboy lim when he got knocked down by jojo lastimosa (that's the danger of skywalking with arms of your opponents swinging below you...)

Guys why don't we make a letter, requesting DAVID PENNISI (BROTHER OF MICK PENNISI) to play in the RP Team

The SEABA Championship is over. The Philippines swept the tournament, though not as convincing as most of us would have wanted. Coach Chot Reyes being furious in our slow starts. Talks of changes in the current roster have been circulating. What is the logical step that our NT must take as of this moment to improve our chances in the coming FIBA-Asia?

Hmm. I think Kerby will be good for the team. One of the big guys with the shooting touch at the perimeter.

I would go to Thoss for Villanueva as we know, villanueva is not yet sure if he can suit up in the Fiba Asia because it is still the Red Bull mgt. who has the last say.

Menk already talked with coach chot to play for the team. He can be an exchange for Dela Cruz. We have too many 2 and 3 already anyway.

As far as i can see it, the lineup will be changed with 3-4 new players hopping on board for before the team leaves for Belgrade.. I don't see it tampering or disrupting the offensive or defensive scheme of the team since the players that chot will call up have played with the team in a tourney or two in the past. Furthermore, knowing Chot, he himself would not want the change in lineup to disrupt anything that the team has built during their stints in Carson and Iran.

Enrico Villanueva will probably be replaced by either Menk or Thoss. Since Menk has reportedly expressed interested in donning the RP colors, chot would definitely consider it. Thoss, on the other hand, will be a handy addition with his vastly improved play this conference (and the fact the we need the added ceiling). However, Thoss has not been exposed to the international game that much while Menk was with the team back in '02. Either of the two will do.

Since there has been a report the Gabe Norwood will be coming to town this June, he'll probably be a late addition to the team in the place of Tony dela Cruz. Although, he has not played much games with the team, he reportedly meshed well with his teammates in his short stint with the team back in Carson.

Kelly Williams will probably replace either Kerby Raymundo or Ranidel de Ocampo. While Willie Miller might take the spot of Jayjay Helterbrand. as much as i would like to see Jayjay play in Japan, his recent performance in Iran and Thailand showed that he might not be the perfect man to quarterback the RP team. There's no way Chot would replace Alapag.

So as far as i can see, the final lineup for Japan might be:

C Asi Taulava 6'9
F/C Mick Pennisi 6'9
F Eric Menk 6'6/ Sonny Thoss 6'8
F Kerby Raymundo 6'6
F Danny Seigle 6'6
F/G Kelly Williams 6'5
G/F Gabe Norwood 6'4
G Dondon Hontiveros 6'2
G Renren Ritualo 6'1
G Mark Caguioa 6'1
G Willie Miller 6'0
G Jimmy Alapag 5'10

I like your changes standout wagner. But I would like to disagree on thoss not being exposed internationally. Thoss indeed played for the NT back in 2005 where the Philippines was suspended by FIBA. But he had a dismal performace, and was easily being pushed around by defenders. Peace:D

let me give my 2 cents...

helterbrand's seems not performing as expected.. 1 news guy during the tour in carson was not too impressed with his performance.. tried my best to check output in the asian champions cup and seaba and he's also not giving impact on the team (as read)... in fairness with him i saw a few assists stats.. and hey, i didnt see the game live... but if norwood can really become part of NT.. then he should take helterbrand's position. alapag is untouchable at this time. his impact (stat wise) to the team is pretty good. if norwood becomes a problem, i dont think miller should be there replacing helterbrand... i like miller as a shooting guard but that position is loaded. it was the best off guard position we can assemble for this team. miller as a point? he might not be able to perform 100% on that position. i rather not force him to be inserted. but that's just me.

canaleta replaces dela cruz due to injury... but i think canaleta is still raw for the best assembled national team.. k will should be able to replace him in to that slot. no need to elaborate on this... a lot will agree.

we need to beef up or front court. de ocampo and raymundo may be versatile but I guess they lack muscles to push people out of the paint. villanueva shows too much dedication just to get a slot i think he deserves it in there not to mention he was tagged as enforcer of the team. but 3 people controlling opponents in the paint (taulava, pennisi, villanueva) seems not enough. either de ocampo or raymundo should give 1 slot to beef up the front. who can it be? we have menk, belasco (lot of people forget this guy), or adducul. i preferred belasco, the guy can add muscle inside, runs and can hit 3's. with him the team will not suffer too much on versatility. for me, i prefer deocampo to stay rather than raymundo. considering that with the line up i have below, deocampo will play 3rd stringer already but looking at his stats in 3 pts area, it is excellent for a guy having less time and from the bench. some people mentioned washington, well i like the guy he's athletic and can play 3-4-5 but he played with NT once (or twice???) and didn't find him effective yet that time (some can argue that 'twas long time ago). Perhaps because he just lacks international exposure. he should be part of the team since the beginning for him to get used to play the "FIBA way" but inserting him right now might not be an excellent idea.

alapag
norwood helterbrand replaced
caguioa
hontiveros
ritualo
siegle
williams canaleta replaced
deocampo
villanueva
belasco raymundo replaced
taulava
pennisi

that's from my 2 cents brain... but whatever the coaching/management staff do with this team.. am still part of the fans who will cheer for them win or lose.

for my lineup, i would want it to be realistic... we all know that in our team, around 2 or 3 players will likely be replace before the fiba-asia... chot said he will talk to willie miller, gabe norwood and kelly williams... i guess chot decided to call on these players because he's not satisfied with some of our players... in the iran stint, it was obvious that our team wasn't prepared to play physical and i think some of our players were soft, so i guess chot decided to replace some of our players with these 3 well built players...

the players that will likely be replaced are helterbrand, dela cruz and probably villanueva(although he's now playing in smb). i don't think raymundo will be replaced becaue chot loves the way he plays... first is helterbrand, so far this player has been the missing factor in our team... i hardly read his name in the newspaper and most of the time i see him only scoring 2pts or sometimes no points and then his assists is only 2,3 just below his average... im pretty sure that chot decided to call miller and norwood to possibly replace helterbrand in the team... we cannot replace alapag because he has shown a lot of leadership and talent to the team...

there's a reason why chot chose miller and norwood. first is miller, this player has been playing great in the pba today, he's now comfortable playing pg for alaska and he's doing it really good, even posting double double sometimes although there are times that he takes ill advised shots and commit some turnovers... but the bottome line is we need him because of his dedication, leadership and talent... on the other hand gabe norwood, the reason why he was chosen is because of his experience in playing the international rules and his height, he's 6'5 but he plays pg and in the international competition there are a lot of teams that have big point guards, one is syria which has a 6'8 brasyrian pg... the other one is dela cruz, there's no question about his dedication and his role but i guess coach chot wants a more physical player and i think dela cruz is too soft that's why he decided to call on williams which is very well built, can play physical and can bring a lot of energy to the team...

the most closest scenarios that will likely happen in the change in our lineup:

1. two of these 3 sub players will make it to the lineup which i actually prefer... miller/norwood for helterbrand and williams for dela cruz... villanueva will be retained in the team.

2. two of these 3 players will also be chosen but dela cruz will be retained and villanueva will be replaced...

other scenario:
3. all of these 3 players will be chosen to replace helterbrand, dela cruz and villanueva...

of these 3 i would pick the first one and i think this will also be probably the choice of chot... i haven't seen norwood play but at this point i prefer miller because of his dedication to play for the team... he's a good leader, he can also score and penetrate the basket and at the same time can pass the ball... if we're looking for a steve nash type i would pick miller because he can penetrate the basket and if doubled, can pass the ball to the open man which is actually what nash does... miller and alapag can get the job done for our team... helterbrand dribbles the ball too much, so many exhibitions... for the other big man, i actually prefer don allado, he's big, can shoot from the outside and can defend... i like the way he played during their game vs the us legends, if im not mistaken he scored 12pts in that game... while in the lebanon game, he scored 9 and 14pts respectively... but i think he's not on the list of chot so probably it would still be villanueva...

most likely our lineup for the fiba-asia:
alapag
miller for helterbrand
caguioa
ritualo
hontiveros
seigle
williams for dela cruz
de ocampo
raymundo
villanueva
taulava
pennisi

SMC-RP 5 UP FOR MANAGEMENT TEAM EVALUATION ON MAY 31
“We’ll plot what’s best for the team” – Eala
Tuesday, 29 May 2007

BANGKOK, Thailand – An hour of reckoning loomed over San Miguel-Pilipinas even as it celebrated with quiet restraint its moment of triumph in the 7th Southeast Asian Basketball Men's Championship at Ratchaburi, a rustic town 100 kilometers west of the capital.

There was no frenzied outburst at the final buzzer. No player pileup. No victory ride. No tears falling, nor big hugs all around.

Instead there was a slow procession from the locker room back to the playing court for the awarding ceremony, a somber dinner at the hotel restaurant, and national coach Chot Reyes talking about three players – Willie Miller of Alaska, Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia Realty and Gave Norwood, a Fil-Am who played for George Mason U.

A date was also set: May 31.

Unless conflicting schedules force its postponement, five men – PBA chairman Ricky Vargas, Commissioner Noli Eala, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Patrick Gregorio, RP team manager Robert Non and Reyes – would gather on Thursday to make an evaluation on the final composition of the national team going to Tokushima, Japan for the FIBA-Asia Men's Championship on July 28-Aug. 5.

This much is known: A new training pool would be formed where Miller and Williams, if their ball clubs allow them, and Norwood, if he is found, would be
added.

Two new assistant coaches would be appointed to the team and the names of Joel Banal, Jong Uichico, Binky Favis and Alfrancis Chua were mentioned.

A doctor would be assigned to the national team, and possibly a nutritionist.

Lastly, proposed foreign trips to Belgrade and Qatar, preparatory to Tokushima, the qualifier to the Beijing Olympics next year, might be scrapped in favor of the nine-games-in-nine days William Jones Cup in Taiwan where China, Korea, Chinese-Taipei and Japan will be playing.

"I think that would be a more attractive tournament," said Eala, who minced no words on the imperativeness of change within the team which ran roughshod over the SEABA competition by an average margin of 38.5 points.

"Although winning restores our confidence after Tehran, this is not the time to celebrate or be complacent," he said. "There's still much room for improvement, especially in the scouting of opponents, the strengthening and conditioning of the players, and the composition of the coaching staff."

Eala said they will "regroup" in Manila "to plot what's best" for the team.

"While I don't want to second-guess coach Chot, the training program, I feel, needs to be more focused on areas of weaknesses which I don't think would be addressed by the planned trips to Belgrade and Qatar," he said. "A balance has to be struck."

Gregorio, appointed to the SBP post only weeks ago, said two major concerns need to be analyzed – the significance of the foreign trips and the conditioning
and focus of the team.

"While winning the SEABA is a wonderful gift, the best is yet to come," he said.

Non went to specifics in identifying points of attention: mental preparedness, conditioning, and total team effort.

"There should be no superstar in this team," he said. "Everybody should accept the role assigned to him."

Among those painfully exposed during the weeklong battle with overmatched opponents from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand were the all-pro team's slow starts, difficulty defending quick-moving offenses, generally unremarkable outside shooting (except for Renren Ritualo's 9 of 12 three-pointers against Malaysia), and ball movement woes.

"We're not necessarily saying that players had to be changed," Eala stressed. "But if there's a need to augment the lineup, especially if we have players not performing as expected, then this should be considered."

The SMC-RP squad returns home Tuesday, with the uncertainty of the near future hovering over it and the promise of an Olympic experience a bit farther in
realization.

My Analysis: I totally agree with your analysis guys. After reading this article from the PBA website, it is slowly appearing that JJ Helterbrand and Tony dela Cruz will lose their spot on the NT line up. I am also a huge fan of Mark and JJ "THE FAST and THE FURIOUS" tandem but it seems that their tandem is not working at all in the team. It is true that statistically speaking, Helterbrand was not productive during their stint in Carson and Iran and he's way below his average stats on the PBA. Well, maybe he is still nursing that minor injury from their rigid training... that, I read from another article :D :D :D.

As for Tony dela Cruz, I'm sorry man, but since you were tapped into the line up, you were a Big Question mark in my mind. Considering he's a hard worker, but he is just not fitted for his position on international games. He will be eaten alive offensively and defensively by oversized, "chenobyl-grown-like" power forwards and shooting forwards out there.

I also believe that Enrico Villanueva will reap the fruits of his labor. Working and training double time is just undeniably admirable. That truly shows his eagerness and dedication to the team for the country's glory. I think he will stay in the line up and hey! he showed good performance on their games ain't that right?

Finally, as of the case of Willie Miller, Gabe Norwood and Kelly Williams, what more can I say? They deserve to be in the team. I also believe, Miller will replace Helterbrand, Kelly Williams will replace Tony Dela Cruz and Gabe Norwood will replace possibly either Raymundo or Ranidel de Ocampo but De Ocampo is more vulnerable. Crossing my fingers, that is if Norwood will finalize his decision to join the RP squad though.

I also have two players in mind, Sonny Thoss, to provide additional height to the team since he's showing a promising performance in the PBA today and his versatility with his moves and Jay Washington, given a chance, I want him to take over Raymundo's position. He's more agile, has a wide body to bang, has a touch on the 3, and a high leaper. Ideal for a wingman to pair up with Kelly Williams.

I could just imagine how the above-mentioned names are feeling nowadays. I bet yah, their butts are now all rolling.... :D :D :D

Can the RP national team find its true name?

By Recah Trinidad
Inquirer
Last updated 07:24am (Mla time) 05/28/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- When was the last time you saw the Philippine national basketball team play?

In the 1972 Munich Summer Games, where the RP national squad had its last Olympic outing?

Or in the 1974 World Basketball Championships in Puerto Rico, which marked the last time a Philippine national basketball contingent fought in a full-scale international cage war.

There were glowing ringside reports about an RP national squad, pillared by half-Filipinos, on its sweet way to sweeping the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) men’s basketball championship in a rustic suburb of Thailand.

Before the Thai countryside picnic, there was this man-sized world club tournament in Tehran where our national squad competed to mark RP’s return to the international field following the lifting of a ban imposed by the international basketball federation (FIBA) on the country.

* * *

Sorry to say this but, in both occasions -- the Tehran test and the SEABA bash -- there was no clear sign the Philippines was represented by a squad that could be called truly national.

No, not solely because it was not pure Pinoy blood that fueled the national squad, whose roster had been left open to half-Filipinos.

For one, it’s still hard to define the likes of Mick Pennissi, who could’ve descended from a Roman centurion, and Asi Taulava, of colorful Tongan hairdo and roots, as distinctly Pinoy.

However, it was not in proper national appearance and looks alone that the RP national cage squad was found lacking.

* * *

There was clearly a short supply of the fabled Filipino character -- shaped up by courage and determination through the years -- with inborn qualities that had sent the Philippine flag soaring proudly in various international fields.

The RP team currently campaigning in Thailand is indeed the Philippine national team.

It cannot be called any other thing.

But one thing that will continue to separate it from national squads during the times of Loyzaga, Mumar, Badion, Reynoso, Melencio, Bernardo and, yes, Jaworski, was the absence of fear among these basketball idols.

Looking back in comparison, it’s easy to say that, while those great Pinoy cagers would go out to do battle, the current breed of national players go abroad mainly to compete and play, nothing more.

* * *

Loyzaga, Mumar, Badion et al were devoted basketball warriors, our current national cagers, the way they had allowed themselves to be pushed around in the all-revealing Tehran test, were basically ball players.

Who knows? There could be a few in the current RP squad who are candidates to be future Badions or Mumars?

But it’s either their toughness and grit were being shaken by the soft, borrowed pillars in the national squad or they had been rendered gutless by the style of local officiating in the PBA.

The realization would come late, but PBA officials would themselves admit that our pro referees were partly to blame for the lost, undecided stand by the RP squad in the Tehran cage battles.

The way they call it in the Philippine Basketball Association, there was the great tendency to de-emphasize on tough defense.

Naturally, this would result in double jeopardy, as sweet officiating also shaped up so-so offensive fighters.

* * *

Nobody would openly admit the fault, but at least, there’s now this frantic rush to set the house in order.

They wanted to turn bellyachers into pure warriors overnight.

Sad to say, we’re all faced with a tough, if not impossible task.

Coach Chot Reyes may have the right formula: field players with both talent and deep heroic character.

The call of the day is to bring back the courage and nationalism that had fueled our Philippine squads of the past, from the PI team debut in the 1936 Berlin Olympics all the way down to the RP team Olympic farewell in Munich.

Coach Chot Reyes has the winning concoction, but will he be able to dig for the proper components?

Can the national coaching staff squeeze out great, fearless basketball from a mongrel national team.

I could make a better analysis if only I was able to watch the games. Anyway, here's the best I could do without watching the games.

Tony Dela Cruz, I say he should stay on the team, only if he recovers from his injury. He was not able to play in the SEABA due to an injury. A lot people would want Kelly Williams for Tony, I however think that Williams take the spot of Villanueva. With Williams, we gain more quickness, athleticism, height and versatility. Sonny Thoss is having a very good conference. He is becoming more aggressive and has become a lot stronger. If he should be on the team, he should take the spot of Raymundo. Raymundo has more experience but is smaller compared to Thoss. Willie Miller, if he should be on the team he should replace Helterbrand. I would want him to replace Alapag so that we can have a little more height, but Helterbrand has been very quiet (At least that's what I read in the news). Gabe Norwood, I can't say anything much about him since I don't know how he plays.

If Coach Chot were to replace some players I would have him replace only 1 or 2 players. I think replacing 3 or more players would be too disruptive to team chemistry. Well, it's still Coach Chot's decision and I'm sure that we will weigh the pros and cons before making his desicion.

i'll post my reply in filipino...

we want our national team to be respected but we're doing more harm than good. a foreign scout wouldn't have to look that far to know who our best players are and how they play because we are practically telling them what to expect from a danny siegle or a mark caguioa. by now, every scout in asia knows that we are trying to emulate the phoenix sun's because our inside game is weak. for sure, they will exploit this. please post and reply sensibly and with consideration for our basketball program.

ngayon alam na nila na si renren streak shooter (babantayan na nila kagad para di mag-init) or taulava is really not that good inside (no double team on taulava, no open shooter to kick out to) or ranidel, raymundo or dela cruz are not much of a threat (they will concentrate guarding seigle and caguiao na lang). tapos pa, we are also making a habit of washing our dirty linen in public (ba't kelangan pa ibrought-up yung mga citizenship issues ni taulava at penissi?) or pinapaalam pa natin sa kanila na we are already cramming and desperado na ang coaching staff natin and we're trying to replace players. mas maganda pa nga kung naging 'secret weapon' si kelly or gabe, mabibigla na lng yung kalaban natin pagdating ng laro.

we are not helping, mga kaibigan. we haven't proven anything yet, so let's not assume we're the best team in asia and also assume that we're better that our national coaches...

peace po sa lahat

No, not solely because it was not pure Pinoy blood that fueled the national squad, whose roster had been left open to half-Filipinos.

Half-Filipinos? It's funny since I never noticed any of the players wear other flags in their jersey other than that of the Philippines.

I should probably check again, it's possible that Mr. Trinidad once saw a Togan flag stiched in Asi's jersey or an Aussie flag in Penisi's...

The guy is all B.S... as long as these players are proud to represent the Country, they are all Filipinos to me.

As always, there are people who mock the team when they are losing and yet they rejoice, as if they were part of the team, when the team wins.

for my lineup, i would want it to be realistic... we all know that in our team, around 2 or 3 players will likely be replace before the fiba-asia... chot said he will talk to willie miller, gabe norwood and kelly williams... i guess chot decided to call on these players because he's not satisfied with some of our players... in the iran stint, it was obvious that our team wasn't prepared to play physical and i think some of our players were soft, so i guess chot decided to replace some of our players with these 3 well built players...

the players that will likely be replaced are helterbrand, dela cruz and probably villanueva(although he's now playing in smb). i don't think raymundo will be replaced becaue chot loves the way he plays... first is helterbrand, so far this player has been the missing factor in our team... i hardly read his name in the newspaper and most of the time i see him only scoring 2pts or sometimes no points and then his assists is only 2,3 just below his average... im pretty sure that chot decided to call miller and norwood to possibly replace helterbrand in the team... we cannot replace alapag because he has shown a lot of leadership and talent to the team...

there's a reason why chot chose miller and norwood. first is miller, this player has been playing great in the pba today, he's now comfortable playing pg for alaska and he's doing it really good, even posting double double sometimes although there are times that he takes ill advised shots and commit some turnovers... but the bottome line is we need him because of his dedication, leadership and talent... on the other hand gabe norwood, the reason why he was chosen is because of his experience in playing the international rules and his height, he's 6'5 but he plays pg and in the international competition there are a lot of teams that have big point guards, one is syria which has a 6'8 brasyrian pg... the other one is dela cruz, there's no question about his dedication and his role but i guess coach chot wants a more physical player and i think dela cruz is too soft that's why he decided to call on williams which is very well built, can play physical and can bring a lot of energy to the team...

the most closest scenarios that will likely happen in the change in our lineup:

1. two of these 3 sub players will make it to the lineup which i actually prefer... miller/norwood for helterbrand and williams for dela cruz... villanueva will be retained in the team.

2. two of these 3 players will also be chosen but dela cruz will be retained and villanueva will be replaced...

other scenario:
3. all of these 3 players will be chosen to replace helterbrand, dela cruz and villanueva...

of these 3 i would pick the first one and i think this will also be probably the choice of chot... i haven't seen norwood play but at this point i prefer miller because of his dedication to play for the team... he's a good leader, he can also score and penetrate the basket and at the same time can pass the ball... if we're looking for a steve nash type i would pick miller because he can penetrate the basket and if doubled, can pass the ball to the open man which is actually what nash does... miller and alapag can get the job done for our team... helterbrand dribbles the ball too much, so many exhibitions... for the other big man, i actually prefer don allado, he's big, can shoot from the outside and can defend... i like the way he played during their game vs the us legends, if im not mistaken he scored 12pts in that game... while in the lebanon game, he scored 9 and 14pts respectively... but i think he's not on the list of chot so probably it would still be villanueva...

most likely our lineup for the fiba-asia:
alapag
miller for helterbrand
caguioa
ritualo
hontiveros
seigle
williams for dela cruz
de ocampo
raymundo
villanueva
taulava
pennisi

I guess Jay Wash is better than Raymundo. He is more athletic, quicker and he can hit from beyond the arc. Jay Wash is better if your looking to run the transition both on offense and defense. He can block or steal the ball better than Raymundo. He can play multiple positions (2,3,4 or 5). The only thing is that he is not exposed to international competition. But dont you think that now is the time for him to be exposed so he can be developed into a more potent RP NT player?

Well, preparation time maybe running out for the Phil NT's dream of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But with Jay Washington, Kelly Williams, Gabe Norwood, Japeth Aguilar, etc. in their refining moments, and with Gian Chiu, Ray Parks starting to blossom, expect a real strong Philippine NT come 2012 London Olympics. Mark that...;)

Well for me, its not a good idea seeing all phil. national team players are half-foreigners, suiting up 3-5 half-blooded pinoys are enough for our national squad. How it would affect our basketball program? That's my question too. But i think it might affect our pure blooded filipinos' morale. Because pride (or ego?) is also a matter here.

Criticizing the composition of our NT because of fil-foreigners is just pure racism. If you look at the history of the Philippines we have been colonized many times, from the Spaniards, Americans and Japanese. Through those years of colonization many of the colonizers inter-married with the local Filipinos. This makes most of our ancestors as half-blooded Filipinos. This makes most of us, if not all of us, not "PURE-PINOY".

The effect of "Fil-Foreigners" on Filipino Basketball? Well, most of the "Fil-Foreigners" have been trained abroad so they have had better training than most of Filipinos from the Philippines have. This makes them more competitive and will pose as a challenge for our "Pure-Pinoys". If taken in good light this will improve Filipino Basketball.

Lastly, let's not use the terms "Fil-Foreigner", "Fil-Am", etc. They are by law and by heart Filipinos. They wear the colors of our flag and they risk their jobs by representing our country. The way I see it they are more Filipino than those who reject to play for our country because the pay isn't that big.

Much as I hate reading Mr. Trinidad's mostly 'gloom and doom' smarty prose, he does have some gut-check points at times.

I don't think the current team could approximate, much less surpass the 'astig' attitude the past team members possessed. It could be that national pride is something tied to territiorial home which Fil-foreigners could only mentally adopt. But who will know for sure for I don't know the current team personally? One thing I know Pinoy pride refers to group belongingness not individual bravado and/or machismo usually associated with 'star' complex.

Nonetheless, in this age of pampering pro athletes, i tip my hats to the current team for doing the sacrifice - foreign-born or not. I just hope they do get some of that Pinoy pride to never back down however the odds are against them. Grit and determination (easily observed even on tv) often makes a big difference in offsetting the skills and even height divide.

Now who does best typify that Pinoy Pride as an athlete? Who else but PACMan.

Mabuhay.

To talk about Fil-foreigners as another ethnic group in our own homeland is quite relative and ironic. We don't want to get discriminated in a foreign land. But here we are joining the spree of racism in our won turf. Just because these Fil-foreigners are better than the locally-born Pinoys in some aspects, we tend to be so defensive of our locally-born players' capabilities. It doesn't matter if a Pinoy is half-bred or locally-born, as long as you believe you are a Pinoy, and you stay true to the Oath of Allegiance to Philippine citizenship. And most of all, you are proud to be a Pinoy...I'm stressing the word "locally-born" because i believe most of us have some traces of foreign races in one way or another. Unless you disagree....You may try to get interested in genealogy to be enlightened on this.

But since we are talking about Phil basketball NT program, i think we should focus on talent and abilities of these players, no matter if they are Fil-fors, foreign-born, and locally-born, to make it to the program...Oh, and yes, if any Fil-for is proven by credible authorities to be a fake one, then that's the time we should kick their butts out of our NT. And out of our native soil.:) RA 9225 states that...;)

On a brighter note, i admire Alex Compton's love for Filipinos, the Tagalog/Visayan language and everything about the Philippines (even considering himself a Feel-Fil, or Feeling Filipino). Unfortunately, the principle of Jus Soli does not apply here in the Philippines, which makes it difficult for non-Filipinos born here like Alex to acquire automatic Filipino citizenship.

I don't think we should be bothered about this problem about racism. Guys, think about this...the Americans natives are caucasians and most of their NT players now are African-Americans. They even do this naturalizing of foreign player to play for their NT...i remember dekembe mutumbo is one. And if i'm not mistaken other good countries in Europe are doing it. And i think its better if we let more imports to play in the PBA just like what Europe is doing right now. They have benefited from those imports, look they(Spain) have just crowned as the king in the world in basketball.

BUSY SKED FOR NATIONALS ‘TIL TOKUSHIMA CAGE WARS

2 trips, 1 Manila Invitational on tap; Williams, Norwood possible additions
Thursday, 31 May 2007
Goodbye, Qatar. Hello, Belgrade and Taiwan.

The San Miguel-Pilipinas team, fresh from its conquest of the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Men's Championship in Ratchaburi, Thailand, is leaving for a tough European camp in Belgrade two weeks from now and the William Jones Cup in Chinese-Taipei in early July.

A planned trip to Qatar after the Belgrade jaunt was scrapped during a management committee meeting Thursday at the EDSA Shangri-la Plaza, but a proposed four-team Manila Invitational which would include China got the green light.

The Belgrade camp is set June 12-20, while the Jones Cup, taking the place of the Qatar Invitational (June 22-28), is on July 2-10.

China has confirmed participation to the Manila Invitational, scheduled after the Jones Cup, and announced it will be sending the national squad that will see action in the FIBA-Asia Men's Championship, the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament set July 28-August 5 in Tokushima, Japan.

In the meeting, which lasted more than three hours, were PBA chairman Ricky Vargas, Commissioner Noli Eala, Vice Chairman Tony Chua, SMC-RP team manager Robert Non, national coach Chot Reyes, PBA national team project director Rickie Santos and fellow PBA officials Perry Martinez, Willie Marcial, Jimmy Sunglao and Rico Meneses.

"We had a very good discussion," said Eala. "Principally, we asked Coach Chot to assess the team and to more or less present to the committee his plans for the next two months."

Reyes, said Eala, was able to "defend his position" on the Belgrade trip well, a journey that would be two-fold: competition against tough European opponents and a strength and conditioning session, both areas of concern the management wished to address.

Gabe Norwood, the 6-6 point guard from George Mason University, and Sta. Lucia Realty Kelly Williams are likely to join the Belgrade voyage, subject to separate requirements.

Norwood, who also plays the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, will have to secure the necessary travel documents, including a Philippine passport, while Williams needs to get the approval of Realtors management ahead of the trip.

Rico Villanueva, traded by Red Bull to San Miguel Beer for Romel Adducul, will be staying behind, and so with Tony de la Cruz of Alaska, should Williams get the go signal.

De la Cruz sprained his right ankle during the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Tehran and needs to give the injury more time to heal. He could find himself joining the Nationals to Belgrade and Taiwan, however, if Williams fails to make it.

Willie Miller, Alaska's ace playmaker, won't be joining the RP team either since his ball club remains in bitter contention for an outright semifinal berth in the PBA Fiesta Conference.

Eala made it clear those dropped from the team are not necessarily out of the squad going to Tokushima.

"It will all depend on the performance of Norwood and Williams in Belgrade," he said.

As for the composition of the coaching staff, Reyes emphasized in the meeting that former national coaches Jong Uichico and Tim Cone, as well as Coca-Cola mentor Binky Favis, remain "an integral" part of the team.

All three will be in Tokushima, while one of them will join the Jones Cup squad.

In the Manila Invitational, Lebanon and Iran have expressed interest in coming over although organizers prefer that at least Syria, which was also invited, would confirm its participation.

"The committee expressed continued confidence and full support for the RP teame," said Eala. "There's lot of work to be done but we're very optimistic that we'll be ready for battle come Japan. At least we know that we have equipped this team as much as we can."

Well, to tell you in actuality, Norwood's George Mason U, Devance's UTEP Miners, Kelly Williams' Oakland U Grizzlies and Danny Seigle's Wagner College are just about the same level in NCAA Div1 standards. That's why it was a "miracle season" for George Mason when it reached the final 4 last year, since nobody expected them to even go past the first round of the NCAA tourney a year ago..

Speaking of stats. Norwood, Devance and Williams' college stats were pretty much the same. Norwood averaged around 4ppg, a couple of rebounds and assists a game in his senior season at GMU. Kelly Williams averaged 5.7ppg 3.8rpg 2.3apg 1.2spg in his senior season at Oakland while Joe Devance averaged a little over a point and a rebound in his junior and final season at UTEP.

Danny Seigle on the other hand, Averaged 15.2ppg in his FOUR-YEAR stay in Wagner. He averaged 19.3ppg 5.7rpg 1.3apg and 1.1spg in his senior year. Not to mention, he bagged a couple of All-NEC first teams and an All-American honorable mention award. Norwood was not even included in any All-CAAC awards. Just keeping the facts straight.

Although we cant just judge Norwood, Williams and Devance based on thier college stats. Im sure that given more playing time and opportunities, those guys would've averaged better numbers. US NCAA has politics too. Well i know for a fact that Kelly and Joe did not have a good relationship with their college coaches. Hence, the playing time and the stats.

Not taking anything away from Norwood tho, a 6'4 point guard is always handy. I've read a lot about him and even if his stats weren't that spectacular, Im sure he's legit. I would love to see him donn the RP colors and solve our match up problems at the point (particularly against China's 6'8 Sun Yue and Syria's 6'7 Barbosa).

I like your changes standout wagner. But I would like to disagree on thoss not being exposed internationally. Thoss indeed played for the NT back in 2005 where the Philippines was suspended by FIBA. But he had a dismal performace, and was easily being pushed around by defenders. Peace:D

Thoss did play in the 2005 Global Hoops Summit (which did not exactly exercise international rules). He also played sparingly in last year's Jones Cup. Yeah, you'll be right, he was visibly outplayed by the other bigs, particularly Taiwan's Tsun WenDin. In fairness to Thoss, he has been a monster lately. Well, we'll see if he still catches the last bus going to Japan.

Williams not keen on suiting up for Nationals?

Saturday, June 2, 2007
Kelly Williams has been allowed by Sta. Lucia Realty to join the RP team but the Fil-Am forward appears undecided to be part of the national squad seeking a return stint to the Olympics in Beijing next year.

Sta. Lucia board representative Buddy Encarnado has approved the RP team management committee’s invitation for the ace Sta. Lucia rookie to re-join the Nationals but the ace Fil-Am remained uncommitted.

RP team coach Chot Reyes wanted to tap Williams and US collegiate product Gabe Norwood for their Belgrade jaunt on June 12-20 while also looking at Willie Miller and Marc Pingris as possible candidates for the FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier in July.

But Williams appeared not too interested in joining the team, probably disappointed over his non-inclusion in the original lineup.

“I’m still thinking about it,” a Sta. Lucia insider quoted Williams as saying.

But Miller readily accepted the invitation to suit up for the Nationals.

“It’s a dream. Hopefully, I make it there,” said Miller. - Nelson Beltran

Gone are the days when players would actually "battle" for a slot in the Philippine NT.

I wonder why Chot is not considering 6'4" John Arigo for the guard slot considering his height, speed, elevation, defense, playmaking ability, and yeah, his shooting arsenal. Arigo is an underrated effective team player in the PBA today. He performed well in the 2005 Jones Cup particularly against Australia as part of the Team B Phil NT. This is despite of a dismal finish by the Philippines, considering a lack of a strong big man in the center spot.

See him drive past NT prospect Kelly Williams and Realtors big man Dennis Espino, finishing with a slam in this video.

G Jimmy Alapag 5'10

dude Norwood is listed 6'5 not 6'4.......kevs Leah Dizon ang name nang babae na yun!!1

RP 5 to get physical
By Joaquin Henson

National coach Chot Reyes said the other day the Philippine team will rely on its ability to break down the defense, quickness in the backcourt, physical play and a knack for finding ways to score – which he called “diskarte” – in trying to capture an Olympic slot at the FIBA-Asia Championships in Tokushima on July 28-Aug. 5.
Reyes pointed to the Filipino cager’s commitment to flag and country as the chief motivator in the drive to return to the Olympics after 36 years.
In Tehran, the team was criticized for playing a style that hardly intimidated the opposition in defense. The lack of toughness was traced to the restrictive rules in the PBA where hand-checking and moving picks are illegal unlike in FIBA.
Reyes admitted the adjustments are major but pointed out that the players didn’t back down from physical play against the Gulf State teams.
“Some referees thought we were even too physical in Tehran,” said Reyes. “Against Syria in the semifinals, we gave up 41 free throws and got only 15. In the playoff for third place, Qatar took 35 free throws compared to our 12. As for those defensive tricks that (Rogelio) Melencio and (Johnny) Revilla used to do, we’ll reserve them for Tokushima. We didn’t want to show all our cards in Tehran.”
Adjusting to the international rules is a priority in the team’s training program which will jumpstart to the next level in Belgrade on June 12-20.
“We took a six-month rest because of our FIBA suspension and resumed practice only last March 12,” said Reyes. “While we waited for the suspension to be lifted, our players went back to their mother teams and started playing PBA rules again. Now, we’re trying to delete those PBA habits. We know in Tokushima, hand-checking and using the arm-bar to defend the post will be allowed. Moving screens will also be tolerated so we’ve got a lot of adjusting to do.”
Reyes said it’s a “different” game that’s played in FIBA – something that even the US has begun to realize after finishing poorly in the World Championships and Olympics.
What impressed Reyes about the players in Tehran and Ratchaburi was their team spirit.
“Off the court, I saw how cohesive they’ve become as a team,” said Reyes. “They watch out for each other. When Mick (Pennisi) came down with a tooth problem, Danny (Seigle) and Asi (Taulava) went out of their way to take care of him. When Tony (de la Cruz) got hurt, the guys carried him around.”
The other positive element that Reyes noted was the team’s ability to improvise on both ends.
“Somehow, the guys find ways to score and stop the other team from scoring,” said Reyes. “That’s called ‘diskarte.’ In Tehran, we competed every game until we began to tire out playing against superior size in the semifinals – our eighth game in eight days. But we’re addressing that problem. We want to be the best conditioned team in Tokushima.”
PBA commissioner Noli Eala said after the team plays in the Jones Cup on July 2-10, a pocket tournament is next on the agenda here July 12-15.
“The secretary-general of the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) has confirmed the participation of the Chinese B team in the Manila invitationals,” said Eala. “Syria will also play. If Iran insists on sending its B team, we’ll settle for Lebanon instead. The tournament will coincide with the PBA Finals and we’re thinking of scheduling tripleheaders to give fans a chance to watch six teams play in one day.”
It’s not likely that China will field its A team in Tokushima because of the conflict in schedule with the Stankovic Cup in Beijing on July 28-Aug. 2. China is assured of a slot in the Beijing Olympics as the host country so playing in Tokushima is not necessary for qualification.
China’s B team is led by 6-7 Wang Bo who leads the CBA in assists.
Other stars in the squad are Bian Qiang, Yi Li and Zhang Kai. B standouts 6-8 Ding Jinghui, 6-7 Wang Lei and 6-4 Li Xiaoxui were recently promoted to the A team but may join the squad in Tokushima with NBA prospect Yi Jianliang.

Additional 47 golds in SEAG okayed
By Joey Villar
Monday, June 4, 2007
The Philippines scored a minor victory in its bid to gain a clear shot at its title-retention campaign in the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand as the host agreed to add 47 gold medals to the previously approved total during the SEAG executive committee meeting yesterday.
In the Executive Committee assembly attended by the chiefs of missions of all 11 participating SEAG nations in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, RP chef de mission Monico Puentevella said the group agreed to add the number to the 441 previously approved during the first SEAG Federation Council meeting last year.
Puentevella said Thailand’s request to enlist additional five gold medals in bodybuilding paved the way for other countries to likewise lobby for their events with RP ending up benefiting the most from the new agreement.
“Our execom meeting has just ended and we got more than what we wanted,” said Puentevella, who was accompanied by Philippine Olympic Committee secretary-general Steve Hontiveros in the meeting at Sima Thani Hotel.
Although the Bacolod solon didn’t give details, he said most of the events recently included are those from sports where the country reigned en route to capturing the first-ever overall championship in the 2005 Manila SEAG.
The SEAG Federation will meet today to officially approve the calendar of events to be played in the Games’ 24th edition slated Dec. 6-16.
Before the meeting, the Philippines was set to bat for additional events in diving, wushu, weightlifting, shooting, boxing, traditional boat race and billiards and snookers.
Meanwhile, Laos will be hosting the biennial event for the first time in 2009 while Indonesia and Singapore will have their turn in 2011 and 2013, respectively.

Most of us are expecting too much from our NT. Remember that they only resume their training in the middle of march due to the suspension given by Fiba. When the team was formed in 2005 with 20 players in the training pool, the agenda was to qualify for the olympics. Now they will only prepare for the tournament for about 4 months. According to Jojo Lastimosa in an interview by Dyan Castillejo on ANC, to form a true national team it will take 2 to 3 years. Coach Chot is really on the right track until the suspension was given by Fiba due the bickerings of the basketball leaders. It really affects the training of the team because they dont know what tournament to compete. As a fan of RP NT i'll just expect the unexpected. Hopefully we qualify for the olympics.

which is true, since coach Chot started his program in 2005, revealing a quick, tall RP 5 in the jerseys of Nic Belasco, Eric Menk, Jayjay Helterbrand, Tony dela Cruz, and Yancy de Ocampo. Asi Taulava was not even in his line up then. He only named the most consistent players in the PBA then that he included as topnotchers in the pool. He could have continued the build up for the most appropriate lineup of the NT, without the cramming part such as this. Nevertheless, the NT has prepared themselves for this, i presume.

Menk is not yet back in his true form. He struggles recently in focus and objectivity. But he's beginning to pile up his numbers again, i.e. rebounding and some of the points. However, those numbers won't assure that he'd be able to perform his role in the NT as per Coach Chot's plans....:(

All I expect from the national team is that they play super hard, and they play with real pride for the uniform they wear, the flag and the nation they represent. If they play 100% effort and with no whining, no bitching, no giving up even if were down 30 points, then I'll still be proud of them. Trying to win an olympic spot is just a bonus.

Yes make us proud ;) . However, if our all-pros philippine national team were still routed by iran or jordan (without two dominating imports by this time) by 20-30 points or more, do you think there's still reason for us to make us feel proud?

If our team plays 100% for 40 straight minutes and we lose by 20 points, i'll still be proud. That just means we got beaten by a better team. I mean 100% is 100%, if that's the absolute best the team can do, we cant blame them. They did their best.

What I hate is when I see the team back down or be intimidated by a better team. If you fight hard and dont back down from anybody, in my eyes, you dont lose. You get outscored, outrebounded and outsized, but they cant say that they conquered you. They'll still have big respect for you for being so tough and relentless. They wont look down upon you.

If we get beaten big by teams that we consistently beat in recent matches, then I'll get upset. But Iran and Jordan are still question marks. We havent faced their true NTs in ages. We dont have a recent head to head record to gauge our next performance against them.

ur question is like answering a grade 1 quesiton,PEACE
example, ur a coach, tom. is the finals, and you will have a practice match with ur opponent, will u use ur secret coaching tactics in that practice match?, u can't use that tactic in the finals when u already showed to the opponent the tactic in the practice! get it? scouts today are very damn clever that they will do anything just study or get familiar with the coach tactics!

you have a point there dude :)

but training/tune-up games has a lot of purposes..

1. to experience playing as a team against another team and not just bunch of individuals put together just like the PBA imports..

2. to test and gauge the teams development in every aspect of the game and experiment with line-up combinations and pairings, strategies which are orthodox and especially unorthodox strategies since its risky to test such in an actual game..

3. most importantly, to scout!

true..iba ang training..iba ang actual game..dahil iba ang pressure sa actual game unlike sa training na if you lose e you're going to live another day ang importante e may natutunan. training is for preparation and serves as a learning experience..the actual game is the application of things learned upon training. :)

For awhile, I thought China was unbeatable. Then I learned that this "B" team they're sending is really "weak", at least as per China's standard. NONE of their past NBA draftees (Wang Zhi Zhi, Yao Ming, Menke Bateer, Mo Ke, Xue Yuyang, Tang Zhedong) or their NBA Prospective Draftees (Yi Lian Jan, Sun Yue) are on this team. Most of those guys, are on their "A" team.

But still, this "B" team is a pretty one, w/ 66% of the players (10 out of 15) in the pool over 6'7".

The question now, is, do we have what it takes, to beat even a weaker Chinese National Team?

Really? Even it was only an exhibition match, that is still a bit of an accomplishment, I guess.

Still, there is a reason why China would have an "A" & a "B" team, especially when you find that a lot of the players in the "A" team have been drafted in the NBA (Mo Ke, Tang Zhengdong), or will be in the 2007 NBA Draft (Sun Yue, Yi Lian Jan). The "A" team is definitely the team w/ the NAME, or highly touted players as far as China is concerned.

Well, I guess "weak" should not necessarily be a good way to describe the "B" team, then. More like, "lesser-known" team, perhaps.

"China has poor ball handlers" is already a myth. Theyve had so many kids in the 1990s that were taught basketball fundamentals, and by NBA coaches too. The new generation of team China has guards almost as good or maybe some who are better than our guards.

I've watched the games of Purefoods, the last time James Yap had 41 and 40pts in 2 consecutive games and eventually they were eliminated. Sabe nun commentator e kung idadagdag ba si James Yap sa line-up ng RP team etc etc.

Would it hurt the RP team if James Yap would be included or Coach Chot would opt for Nic Belasco, na katulad ni Williams e may defense and versatility? Sayang kase si James Yap, its his prime right now, malay natin kung after ilang years mabano na siya, joke. I've read a lot of news articles, bakit parang walang namemention si Chot Reyes na James Yap or di kaya ayaw magcommit sa RP team ni James Yap?

I understand that Kelly Williams might be sentimental towards Coach Chot since he was brought here in the Philippines by none other than the coach himself to suit up for the RP team. Tsk tsk tsk, pero thats on their personal level.

Pero kung titingnan natin in a professional manner, since Kelly Williams is a professional player and at the right age, hindi naman siguro siya parang bata na magtatampo tampo, it aint right dahil he should act professional and its a call of duty, if he doesnt want to play e di sabihin niya agad, mahirap naman kase na iniisnob niya yun RP team. Until wala siya sagot e siyempre may mga taong aasa, lalo na yung mga nagtitiwala at bumibilib sa kanya, pero kung ako ang tatanungin, dapat turuan ng leksyon si Kelly Williams kung ganyang may superstar complexity siya, leksyon in a way na hindi siya tutularan ng ibang mga players in the near future. Unfair din naman sa mga players na willing maglaro sa RP team tulad nila Willie Miller, Erik Menk at Nic Belasco to name a few, sila e hindi nagtatampo tapos si Kelly Williams magtatampo?

In 2002 Asiad, there were many "what if's", what if Ron Jacobs didn't had a stroke then he may have been the coach of the RP team in the Asiad and not Coach Jong Uichico, what if Danny Seigle didn't have an injury during their exhibition game with Qatar, what if Racela sank the two free throws then we might have beaten the eventual champion Korea, what if..what if... I hope this 2007, there will be no more what if's especially on the case of Kelly Williams. What if he joins, what if he doesn't, well it's up to him but with or without Kelly Williams, RP team will be RP team. ;)

Then why not Chot pick those guys whose willing to represent their country internationally... like Willie Miller and Eric Menk... if he needs a prolific scorer why not James Yap and if he wants experienced then how about Rommel Adducul, probably the most experienced international player we have at the moment (more experienced than most members of the current squad).... forget about Kelly Williams... we got lots of players who are willing to play!

I wonder how this people were able to take what they were saying to the RP team & its Coaching staff while they are just sitting & watching the games from the comfort of their own rooms. Those people out there playing for our country, including the coaching staff have sarifice more than anyone else. Training away from their families and friends is not an easy thing to do.

Let's be more patient and put our unconditional support for our RP Team.

Many want to share the Glory of the RP Team but only afew who are willing to take up the cup of suffering & sacrifice...

Let's accept that there are things happening in the RP team we don't understand or should i say we are not amenable.

Just because we don't like/understand what's happening, it doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing. PBA Boards, team owners & management are not a bunch of idiots to let Coach Chot do the stupid thing to RP Team. They have their blessings and support. For sure there are agendas for RP Team they don't want to reveal to the public. Kelly's whereabout is unconfirmed, whether he's still in the country or not is uncertain. Who knows, he might be in belgrade at this time to join the RP Team. :)

yep, Coach Chot shares our passion for the sport. we may disagree with many things about him but I think he's the most passionate about the RP team. :)

CLEVELAND - San Antonio director of pro player personnel Dell Demps said the other day Talk ‘N' Text will train with the four-time NBA champion Spurs in the Alamo City in August and Phone Pals coach Derick Pumaren is finalizing the details of the two-week camp.

Demps played as an import for Pepsi in 1992 and Shell in 1994. He keeps in close touch with Pumaren and has visited Manila at least twice since finishing his PBA career.

Talk ‘N' Text is the first foreign team to benefit from the experience of the Spurs' recent sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

Demps said coach Gregg Popovich's staff, possibly except for P. J. Carlesimo, will supervise the camp for the PBA team. Carlesimo is rumored to be considering a job with the Seattle SuperSonics.

“The best thing that ever happened to me in the Philippines was meeting Derick,” said Demps. “Just a few weeks ago, I was on the phone with him. We text each other all the time and I hope Talk ‘N' Text makes it to the PBA Finals.”

In 2003, Demps was in Manila to train the La Salle varsity on Pumaren's invitation. The Archers were then bringing in a slew of fresh recruits, including Jayvee Casio and Tyrone Tang. Demps traveled alone, stayed for two weeks, returned to watch the US NCAA Final Four and came back for another two weeks, this time with his wife Anita. When he got back to the US, Demps was hired by the New York Knicks as a scout.

Last year, Demps arranged for Pumaren to join the Spurs coaching staff in the summer leagues.

“I wasn't an observer,” said Pumaren in a long distance phone call from Manila. “I was part of the Spurs staff and joined the team in summer leagues in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Dell advises me on which imports to get and although he's not an agent, he puts me in touch with the right people. He recommended J. J. Sullinger for our team this conference.”

Pumaren said Demps' dream is to see a Filipino player in the NBA.

“He told me he plans to bring some NBA scouts to watch games in the PBA,” said Pumaren. “At one time, he was closely looking at Willie Miller and Jimmy Alapag. Maybe, we can invite him to come, conduct clinics and help our national team.”

Demps played for Golden State, Orlando and San Antonio in a three-year NBA career. After his playing days were over, he was Sam Vincent's assistant coach on the Mobile Revelers team that won the NBA D-League title in 2003. He was initially a scout for the Knicks then became the director of pro player personnel, the position he now has with the Spurs whom he joined two years ago.

“I coached Dell for Pepsi,” said Pumaren. “He was a two-three player, very coachable and we got along to the point that we became very close friends.”

Demps has his suits and shirts made exclusively at “Rich and Famous,” a tailoring shop on the second floor of the Pension Virginia building on Pasay Road, Makati. He's been a customer since the shop opened nine years back. Pumaren sends Demps' clothes to San Antonio through friends.

Spurs guard Bruce Bowen also has his suits and shirts made at “Rich and Famous.”

During the recent NBA Finals, Demps wore his Philippine-made suits.

“Rich and Famous” proprietress Zeny Magdangal said Demps orders about 10 suits and 20 shirts, both long and short-sleeved, twice a year. Bowen sent a sample suit for his measurements and just got the first delivery of three suits, four long-sleeved shirts and three short-sleeved shirts. He is due for a second order.

Magdangal said master cutter Ben Dalida of Cavite takes care of the orders of both Demps and Bowen. “Our customers include the entire Pumaren family, including Franz and Dindo, Bong Ravena, Tonichi Yturri and Frankie Lim,” said Magdangal. “We employ about 15 tailors to do the men's clothes and five for women. They mostly do their work at home so our shop is just an order taker.”

Demps played at the University of the Pacific and earned his bachelor and master's degrees in business administration in the California school. He and wife Anita, a lawyer, have three sons Jourdan, 17, Tre, 14, and Riley, 7.

I think we should keep Renren Ritualo... we need him for the final seconds of every game!... but ever since I would say Willie Miller for Tony dela Cruz... ever since Kelly Williams took two-weeks vacation... I lost my respect to him... he doesn't deserve a place in the team... if he wants to play then he have to earn it again... he earn it before but he turn them down... that's bullcrap!... other players are more passionate to play for the national team... he has his chance... why not give the others who are more willing to play for the country... some of you here Filipinos are more willing to play for the national team than he is!

Norwood's paper for his Filipino lineage could not be found
Philippine Daily Inquirer
06/22/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Gabe Norwood, a dream 6-foot-6 point guard for the Philippine basketball team, remains just that at the moment -- a dream.

With just over a month before the FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier in Tokushima, Japan, the most important piece of paper that would prove Norwood’s claim to Filipino lineage still cannot be found.

The birth certificate of Norwood’s grandmother, supposedly a Filipina at the time of the birth of the cager’s mother, is missing.

Norwood cannot lay claim to Filipino citizenship through his mother, who was already an American citizen on his birth.

The Philippine Basketball Association has asked Norwood’s lawyers to speed up the search for the cager’s birth certificate so the league could apply for his Philippine passport on time.

Norwood joined the RP team in Belgrade last week, with the George Mason University star in the NCAA giving a good account of himself in tune-up matches with Serbian and Montenegrin squads.

This development comes on the heels of three other PBA superstars who were invited to join the RP team camp, and Kelly Williams’ willingness to forego a family reunion in the United States to be able to start practicing on Monday.

Eric Menk, KG Canaleta and reigning PBA MVP James Yap are all being considered, with Menk and Canaleta expected to join practice on Monday.

“Hopefully, these adjustments are for the better,” said PBA commissioner Noli Eala late Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. “Having these players in the pool will allow us to get the best 12 (players) for Tokushima.”

Eala said that Williams came to him to say that he is ready to join the RP team and that he is willing to move his vacation in the US to August if he makes it to the team.

The RP team is expected back in the country any day now from Belgrade. It flies out again near the end of the month for Taipei to take part in the William Jones Cup.

There, RP coach Chot Reyes will be taking the full compliment of a 14-man roster. Only 12 will get to play in a game, though, but organizers allowed a bigger lineup with teams playing nine straight games.

I think they're possible replacement if those injured players (I hope Danny Seigle recovered!) won't be fit by the time the Jones Cup or the Manila Invitational tournmanents took place.. possibly for the big one!...

Out of the three, although I'm no Kelly Williams fan anymore... I think he got a chance... but I love to see Eric Menk in the team!

I like the addition of players to the pool. I would want James Yap to be on the team. He adds a lot of offensive power and height to the team. However, we are quite crowded in the SG position. Eric Menk over Ranidel de Ocampo or Kerby Raymundo should be good. Kelly Williams will definitely solidify our rotation.

Whoever ends up in the final line-up I hope they will do good and win for our country.

Yup, Eric had a lot of difficulty scoring. But his defense and rebounding (Both Defensive and Offensive rebounding) were very good. We do need a very good rebounder and post defender. Let's just hope that he becomes fit enough to join the team. Probably if Gabe Norwood does not complete his paper work for his citizenship on time, James Yap could take his spot.

Agree. Thoss is playing his best ball since joining the PBA. He has improved a lot and his body has widened. He may be a good back-up center. He still has to work on his ball-handling skills and perimeter game though.

Additional scoring players is not that bad. :) I am glad that Chot took notice of James Yap. Maybe, due to his back to back 40 pt game on an import-laced conference is enough already to make Chot take a second look at him. Enough of the details on how he play. Let the opposition be surprised. LOL

James Yap has a señorito attitude in the court, I hope he will be a good defender if ever he will be included in the final roster of RP NT.. having him and Caguioa in the RP NT line-up at the same time, it's either lights-in or lights-out every night :)

eric menk is slow. and undersized at pf position... remember 02 asian games... he can't score! kelly will be there for sure. and as for Jame Yap, is he will be included in the lineup helterbrand or alapag should go, and caguioa plays the pg spot.

these guys should play defense. Especially James Yap! :D

is reavis still out?

Size alone does not determine a player's worth.

Eric "Major Pain" Menk, a legitimate 6'6" power forward, may not be as big as the other Asian counterparts at his position. He, however, makes up for any size disadvantage with his toughness and hustle. His offensive and defensive rebounding can only be rivaled by a few frontliners like Asi Taulava, Rudy Hatfield and Kelly Williams, among others. Add to that his decent shooting, that extends as far as the three point region, which makes him an asset for the national team. And he is not slow for a big forward, he can defend both from the perimeter and the low post.

A pure basketball observer should not just discard a player based purely on his height. If you insist, kindly notice that Kerby Raymundo is also just 6'6" and leaner than Menk. While Raymundo is a better offensive player, Menk is the tougher and better defender and rebounder. You can make a similar comparison with the smaller Ranidel de Ocampo, a 6'4" power forward with offensive tenacity and shooting range but has shortcomings on defense. Now, will you prefer offense over defense??? I don't think so. You better ask Ron Jacobs, Greg Popovich, and Larry Brown. And please don't forget Chot Reyes.

You are making the 2002 Busan Asian Games as basis to exclude Menk from national team considerations. Kindly remember that the "Major Pain" was there not for his scoring but for his defense and rebounding. Please watch a replay of the Philippines versus South Korea semis match where Menk grabbed double digit rebounds and helped contain the South Korean frontliners, headed by 6'10" center Seo jang-Hoon and 6'9" power forward Kim joo-Sung.

In preparation for the 2002 Asian Games, the Jong Uichico-mentored national team campaigned in Europe where they faced national teams from Latvia and Ukraine. In the game where the RP squad beat the Ukrainian national team, Menk scored 20 points in that winning effort. Asi Taulava, Kenneth Duremdes and Danny Seigle all registered 22 markers to lead the nationals. That proves Menk is no slouch on offense.

You want to remove 5'10" Jayjay "Helter Skelter" Helterbrand and 5'8" Jimmy "Mighty Mouse" Alapag from the RP team, also because of their height??? Instead you want to insert 6'1" shooting guard James "Boy Thunder" Yap and let 5'11" Mark "The Spark" Caguioa play the point??? That could be too risky my friend. It's basic in forming a team to have at least two natural point guards. We can afford to miss a legitimate center but we cannot play without a court general. Just compare Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns with Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets. If you want more, see Argentina, with NBA veteran pointguard Pepe Sanchez and Reuben Wolkowyski at center, versus China, headed by NBA star center Yao Ming and below par assistman Liu Wei. The point is you cannot afford to play disorganized basketball where every player on the court hoists ill-advised shots.

Mark Caguioa is a superb player but he is at his best as a scorer rather than as a playmaker. The same can be said of James Yap. While he may not make the team to Tokushima for the olympic qualifier, the addition of Yap in the pool will be helpful in his future international stints.

Peace! God bless us my friend!

I don't think it's a good idea to remove Jayjay and/or Jimmy from the team. They are arguably 2 of the best point guards in the Philippines. If we wanted more size and versatility at the PG position we could add Mike Cortez, but since he just came back from an injury and he is still not playing like before then we should just stick to Jayjay and Jimmy. Though undersized they have proven to be very good at distributing the ball and scoring at the same time. Mark Caguioa, though a very good player, is a natural SG and making him our main PG would be most unwise. Yes, he can bring down the ball but his basketball instinct is that of a SG.

I don't think that is wise. Norwood can play PG, but from what I have read he is a natural SG/SF. We should retain both point guards. But, however way we discuss this only the coaching staff has the final say (Rightfully so as I think they know what's best for the team)

just my 2 cents brothers:

i like kerby than menk mahina na si menk mabagal pa hindi na sya ung dating menk nung tanduay and busan years. and kerby can rebound too may angas pa, can run too unlike menk..

wala ako masabi kay helterbrand kasi hindi ko na sya makitang naglaro. ano ba kumusta ba laro nya?? i think he is deteriorating too??

dapat shu-in na si alapag dami na nya hirap sa RP NT, ayuz naman sya mabilis, goodpasser, can hit 3's iguess???, sobra liit nga lang sya :(

i dont get it?? why take off alapag.. he has been really effective for our national team. i havent even heard helterbrand make any big difference for Nt in the news. let me guess.. ginebra fans think that helterbrand should stay and alapag should go? if a pg should go it should be helterbrand and he should be replaced by a natural point guard, not caguioa. we shouldnt think of alapags height issues as he hasnt showed that his height has come in the way of his performance. besides, other NTs has short pgs like alapag but arent as effective. but i believe that there shouldnt be anymore PG changes in the lineup as it could ruin the chemistry of the team. they have practiced long and hard with alapag and helterbrand then they should know by now the game plans and the plays by heart.

as for eric menk, i have lost faith in eric menk as he has lost his old form. sometimes i see him as someone who easily gives up if he has a bad game or if the team is down. although i like it when he really fights and when he is pumped up. i hope if ever menk would be included he would be thinking of the 2002 busan games, and get revenge for our rp team. he should also promise that he will grab 20rebounds a night!

Ex-US NCAA star Norwood hits town looking for relatives
By Musong R. Castillo
Inquirer 06/24/2007

MANILA, Philippines—Gabe Norwood planed in together with the rest of the Philippine team a couple of days back, and unlike many Fil-American players who came to trace their roots here, he hasn’t seen a relative just yet.

“No, I don’t know anyone here,” Norwood, a 22-year-old former star of George Mason University in the US NCAA, told scribes Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum. “No one has actually come to me and told me that he’s my relative.”

Norwood is being eyed by coach Chot Reyes for the RP team, which will campaign in the Fiba Asia in Japan next month for a slot in next year’s Beijing Olympics.

Only one critical piece of paper is missing in Norwood’s claim to Filipino lineage, the birth certificate of his grandmother.

Though Norwood does not even know the name of his grandmother, her birth certificate, if it can be determined that she was still a Filipino at the time of Norwood’s mother’s birth, he can get a Philippine passport.

“All I know is that my great grandpa is from Pangasinan,” Norwood, a reedy, 6-5 point guard, whose father Brian was a quarterback for the University of Hawaii, said.

A lawyer whom the Inquirer consulted yesterday said that it is possible for Norwood to secure a Philippine passport “if that piece of paper is found and proven to be authentic.

“But it would be a case of forcing through, most especially since the Fiba Asia is just more than a month away.”

The lawyer, who did not want to be identified, said that if the father or mother of Norwood’s mother happens to be Filipinos at the time of the cager’s mother’s birth, “then he can pass as a Filipino.”

An article posted in March 2006 on the starbulletin.com website said that the family of Norwood’s mother Tiffiney, migrated to Maui from the Philippines.

“They have lived in Maui for five generations, her (Tiffiney’s) great grandmother migrating to Maui from the Philippines,” the article said.

The big question why replace one of this two PG? When they've been there since 2005 and by now they already know the system. Why risk of having one natural PG and let Norwood be the back-up? We already know the
consequences of that, remember 2002 Busan Asian Games.

why not use hocus-pocus technique, just like what they did to Asi Taulava when he played in the PBL Vis-Min Cup, the Governor of Leyte paid certain group of people to testify that they know the grandparents of Taulava and that they really existed in Leyte :)

The Taulava issue should not be brought to life again. He has went all-out a number of times to prove his eligibility. He was offered to play in a number of leagues around the world but he chose to prove his being a Filipino and play for the Philippines. That for me is more Filipino than a "pure-filipino" not wanting to play for the NT because the pay is not that much.

Since the current PBA conference will be over in about 2-3 weeks time, would it be a good idea to add more players to the pool/reserve list? I was thinking of players like Willie Miller and Sonny Thoss.

So maybe he really wants to play for the Philippines, but I really really doubt the authenticity of his documents proving his being a Filipino. If people like Chris Clay, Jeffery Flowers, Dorian Pena (play with words, tropical fruits Durian-Pina) and Mick Penissi can slip through the cracks of the Bureau of Immigration (by design?) then why wouldnt a Polynesian looking Asi He looks kinda like Pinoy.. close enough.

And even if a suspected Fil-Sham is committed with playing for us, we shouldnt just turn a blind eye and not search for the truth. For me, even if Kobe Bryant wants to play for the Philippines, I still wouldnt be comfortable with him wearing the Philippine colors unless he gives concrete and true evidence of his Pinoy roots, or he applies for naturalization.

More than winning, I want a true Filipino team representing me. I dont care even if he's half-pinoy or a quarter-pinoy, as long as he's the genuine article.

why would I keep it to myself when it was broadcasted in the National TV (channel 2 in particular)?
the Taulava issue was just an example, anyway he proved his Filipino lineage a number of times and he already married a Filipina, I'm not saying that he's a fake or whatsoever, but the hocus-pokus thing really happened because that happened way back ago (when he was playing for Blu Detergents in the PBL Vis-Min Cup) before he went to Manila.
there's no Filipino vs. Filipino issue here, let's just be mature, it's a forum, i'm just sharing facts for the general reader's information.

And the proofs theyve been showing arent 100% believable and convincing.

Willie Miller has asian features. And all these guys youve said, yes some of them do look Caucasian, but all of them were born here, grew up here, and you followed their progress as players starting from college, to the amateur ranks, to the pros and the RP team. You know they really ARE Filipinos.

Back in the PBA, in 1998 they suddenly faced a rival league, the MBA. The MBA signed up good talent all over the country and signed up all the Fil-Foreigners they can find. They were closing in on the PBA's popularity so the PBA got spooked. So there came a rush of direct-signing up "Fil-foreigners" that a team can find all over the world.

Players like Davonn Harp, Al Segova, Sonny Alvarado were signed up and you know what happened to this group. Exposed as fakes.

Mick Pennisi back in the 1990s was a local player in the Australian Pro leagues. When the PBA was panicking and desperate to find new recruits, they suddenly "discovered" a 30-something "fil-aussie" playing down under. He just comes out of the blue. Before 1998, there wasnt even a bit of news that there might be a pinoy prospect in Australia.

Compare that now, we hear some news of possible pinoys like Norwood, Ronnie Aguilar, Williams.. there is a buzz going on.

So Im telling you, its not just the color of the skin, its where we got a player from, and how he became Pinoy, and at least show that they have actual relatives here, and you can see at least 1 of their parents are of Filipino ancestry.

yup, there was davon harp, sonny alvarado, al segova, eric menk, rob parker, mat mitchel, rob wainright, taulava, danny seigle, chris clay, jeffrey flowers, dorian pena, james walkvist, alex crisano, john ordonio...

so where are these other so-called foreign players with filipino lineage now?...
the ones unable to prove they had filipino blood fled or got banned (exposed as fakes, as you said) and the ones who proved they had are currently playing as locals in the pba today... it's as simple as that...

if you were directly involved during the DOJ investigations and you can present this forum with hard evidence to prove your theory, i will believe you...

gut-feel and examination of facial features alone? cmon, you can do better than that...

If they have stopped investigations already, that doesnt mean that they (fakes) are all out of the league now. You just cant readily trust 100% all documents presented. Theyre still here because some fakes had really good fake supporting papers.

And the DOJ can be wrong too. (as evidenced by the present admin)

And some people slip in because of maneuvering and technicality. And some deserving ones are given as hard time. An example is Rudy Hatfield. He brought her Filipina mom back to the PI to show that he's a real Fil-Am. But because of certain technicalities (i think he was born when her mom was already an american citizen) he had a really hard time getting a DOJ clearance.

If people inside the govt can manipulate millions of votes in the elections, then what's so hard about manipulating 1 or 2 documents in exchange for some cash?

"Nobody's gonna get hurt with what Im doing? Its just basketball?"

something to think about:

davonn harp and pennisi were team mates (red bull)... harp, definitely, was the better player of the two. we all know that statistically, harp was the league mvp during his last season in the PBA (the award was given to miller, instead). that year, both harp and pennisi were under fire because of their citizenship..

we all know now that pennisi got through while harp did not.

following your theory, pennisi's papers got manipulated and fixed to prove that he is eligible to play as a local in the PBA. by whom? who fixed his papers? red bull? the pba? for sure, he couldn't do it by himself..

now, if you were the redbull owner or the powers behind the pba, whose papers would you rather fake? harp's or pennisi's.

logically, it should be harp's. he is the better player. he is the more exciting player. he is the player that could have more impact in the RP NT (remember him playing for hapee-RP team?). he looks more filipino than pennisi.

again, why not harp?

is it not because of the simple reason that pennisi's documents are authentic and harp's are not?

Learning about the truth doesnt end in 2007. Maybe Penissi and players like him can get away with it, today, maybe till next year, maybe his whole career. But the truth will come out sooner or later.

Im not just zeroing in on Mick and Asi just because. In fact Im a RedBull fan. I just cant stomach the thought of fakes earning good money in the PBA, where fakes can mess up the league's history and integrity, they'll mess up all the hallowed local scoring, rebounding, passing records, scoring averages and all that stuff. And when theyre done playing here, they leave.

If there was solid, solid evidence presented (presenting filipino parents, relatives, hometown records) and it convinces me, I'd be so glad of having Mick in the NT. Ive always said here that I want more players with a "rabid junk yard dog", tough and rugged mentality in the RP team, coz I think overall the team is kinda soft. And he's one of the dirtier ones in the line up. I want more players like him on the team for "intimidation factor".

But sadly, I really dont believe he's a legal and true pinoy.

i hope we'll all stop this very redundant topic you're talking here... it's been discussed, reviewed over and over again in the senate and in almost all basketball boards in the net so maybe it's time to take this case close... there's really no point in discussing this further...

what proof are we talking here? Asi and Pennissi already submitted docs that they are Filipinos, its been reviewed and investigated thoroughly... in fact they're playing now for our National Team... maybe those who have doubts of their true citizenship can submit or post some docs here claiming that they are not Filipinos... can you? if not then stfu!!! i myself is not 100% sure that they are Fil-foreigner but what can i do? i have nothing to support my doubts...

so please let's stop all this nonsense...

ok let's back to topic...

i'v got an info from Boss Jawo w/c he said came from an email of Coach Chot:

1. On Japeth Aguilars situation - it said that due to scheduling conflict that's why they have not included him in the original line-up... Japeth will be release only this June from his school and Coach chot think that its too late to include him.

2. On James issue - Caguaio is their best offensive player and Dondon Hontiveros is their main defensive weapon, both takes a lot of time in the SG position. So the only place for James is to be a support cast so the question is, is he willing to accept the role portrayed by Ritualo as a last minute substitute in a quarter? that's why also Ritualo's scoring diminish a lot due to time playing constraint...

if you want to have the full link just pm me... i can't just paste it here bcoz i have high respect of the said poster which is also a member here...

hard, solid evidences? are those the ones shown on tv?

maybe there were evidences of filipino relatives. maybe there were hometown records.. that was why i said that unless you were a part of the investigation and saw that these evidences were missing or manipulated, you can't prove anything..

just because pennisi's relatives (or their records) weren't shown on tv or his documents displayed publicly, doesn't mean they were not submitted and verified.

it's really hard to give mick the benefit of the doubt because he really doesn't look pinoy... yun kasi yung unang impression natin sa kanya. it's even easier to believe that alex compton is a filipino...

If you believe he's the real mccoy, then they should also get his younger brother to play here. He's got a more talented brother with better stats, better averages and he's playing abroad. If Mick can qualify here, his brother can quallify here. Lets bring the whole family here. That would help out the RP team more.

But for the record, I still am not convinced he's a Pinoy.

I just hope that let us all drop these unnecessary things. We are all pinoys right? Are we here to destroy our ownselves? Im not talking about our team itself, but our image here as Pinoys. We are always tackling unnecessary things that although related to basketball, are not really about basketball.

Let us all just respect our country, and give due respect to the flag. If we are to say bad things about our nation, without any solid proofs, then let us just keep that to our selves. Those issues are history right? How many times should we need to open it up again? Can we just drop all the ISSUES and just be basketball fans? Besides, it's why we are here right?

This is for each of us Filipinos here, okay? In short, no flaming, especially if it's not necessary at all. And let's always remember the red blue and white on the left side of our posts. :)

Judging a Filipino by his looks is racial discrimination. But, that is your opinion and we respect that.

Paulasi Taulava's (206-C-73, college: BYU-Hawaii) team Talk n' Text urged Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner Noli Eala to immediately lift the league’s suspension on Paul Asi Taulava in light of documents from the government of Tonga confirming that Taulava is half-tongan and half-Filipino.

The lawyer Ray Espi*nosa, spokesperson of Talk ‘N Text, said there is “no more doubt that Taulava is a Filipino as affirmed for the nth time” by the new documents he submitted to the National Bureau of Investigation yesterday.

Through his lawyer Eduardo Francisco, Taulava submitted to NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco the following documents, certified on April 20 as true official documents of the government of Tonga by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Taulava’s birth certificate showing his mother Pauline to be a Filipino citizen at the time of his birth, The death certificate of Taulava’s grandmother, the former Ana Hernandez, showing she was a born Filipino and died a Filipino; and a certification that Pauline came to Tonga as a Filipino citizen and was naturalized on September 8, 1976, as a Tongan national, well after giving birth to Taulava in 1973.

“The PBA Commissioner’s Office, for a long time now, has unjustly denied Taulava his contractual rights to play for TNT, in effect denying him his basic human right to provide for his family,” said Espinosa.

Tonga is not a great basketball country but one of its child is actually one the best player in the Philipines. He played in the US, Sweden, Brazil and faced deportation in Philipines. Here is the story of Paulasi "Asi" Taulava (206-C-73, college: BYU-Hawaii).

Asi was born in 1973 from a tongan father and a filipino mother. Strong like many tongans, he's taller than most of them with 206cm heigh. He decided to leave to study at California State Bakersfiled, an US college. But there the basketball coaches made him joined the basketball squad. With the team he won back-to-back NCAA II championships in 1994 and 1995.After averaging 7.6pts 6.5rbs in his junir year, the lack of playing time and island mood forced him to transfer to BYU-Hawaii for his senior year. There he raised his numbers to 13.5pts 6.6rbs.
He signs his first professional contract with Guarulhos in Brazil (20pts 12rbs), the next year he would play for M7 Boras in Sweden! That was a shock for this south pacific kid there but he enjoyed his stay averaging 17.0pts 50.7%FG 10.4rbs in 31 minutes per game (32gp) in a team owned by a certain Magic Johnson at that time. He met Magic once, one day deeply routed in his memory.
Taulava then use his filipino routs to play in the Philipinnes PBA for two seasons with Mobiline (17.0pts 10.4rbs in the first year, 23.0pts 14.5rbs in the second one). Looking for a better level of play he signed a contract with Atenas Cordoba (Argentina) but the contract was woived when he failed to get a visa for Argentina. So he played the 2000-01 season with the San Diego Wildfire in the US minor league ABA. He averaged 9.7pts 39.7%FG 6.0rbs in 25 minutes, played 22 games before being released in March 2001.
Now a father he choose stability and decided to play in the Philipines until the end of his career, but the future wouldn't let him relax. In May 2003 a Filipino Senate Comitee urged the Immigration Bureau to start Deportation proceeding about 5 basketball players including Paulasi who had fakes filipino citizenships! Paulasi Taulava received his filipino passport in 2001.
The trial was held in June 2004, his lawyers managed to proove that is a true Filipino but the problem is that Asi falsified the documents he submitted to the Immigration Bureau when he arrived in the Philipines concerning his mother's citizenship. Finally the lawyers managed to prove that his mother was born in San Jose, Philipines and that even Asi was born in Philipines. So despite some deep tongan routs, Paulasi Taulava is half-filipino and should be able to stay in the country. The jury's verdict will be call in the next monthes but Asi is likely to be cleared.
We hope he would be able to continue his great career in the Filipino league after being voted MVP, Finals MVP and champion in 2003. He has been recently awarded MVP of the PBA All-Star game thanks to his 26pts 13rbs 3bs.

so James Yap is out? or to be considered in he future?

it was not mentioned but he said further that due to Yap's personal conflict plus the fact that Kris just give birth, contributed also to his decision not chosing Yap in the original line-up!

so for me, this just show that Yap it's not out yet... it will depend if he can accept a reliever role, and if he's willing to travel with the team and leave Kris here in P.I.

That was initially the main reason why James Yap wasn't included in the original line-up. He was psychologically disturbed in those times due to his marriage. I think he's all ready now.

Our players might not look and their names might not sound Filipino but who give us the right to judge them and their families.

Our country is poor and opportunities are scarce, the truth is our economy is driven by and was mostly able to float because of the remittance our kababayan was able to send their families.

So the decision of their parents and grandparents to leave this country, should not be taken against them because their parents had all the rights to look after their children's welfare.
It might not be fair but the children of Filipino parents who opted to changed their citizenship have all the rights in law after attaining majority age to adopt the former citizenship of their parents.

And the law gave them right to be called Filipino, our apprehension against other members of our National team regarding their filipino lineage must be douse-off by the operation of law.

Their papers proved them to be Filipino citizen and that will remain until proven otherwise.

We all love basketball here and like most of you, I also won't condone wrong doings!

But no matter how hard we want our team to look and sound pinoy!

This is how our country looks right now, a mixture of races, color and religion.

we should also remember that most US ballers are descendants from Africa. The true American is an indian. Same with France, I think only 3 players on their NT are truly French natives. Most are sons of African immigrants and cross-breeds (Boris Diaw, Pietrus brothers, Johan Petro, and even Tony Parker).

I also thought maybe that year's team would be good. But watching them versus Korea in the Asian games, they got outrunned, outshot, outrebounded and outplayed as a whole. That SouthKorean team looked so fluid and precise, so quick and fundamentally perfect. They were beautiful, and I was so jealous, I wanted my team to play like that.

I felt so disgusted watching that game,I felt gutted like a fish.. What's worse was I could see the team giving up the fight with still a few minutes left.

Both the RP and Tongan Government..already cleared Asi Taulava..You are cheering for the RP team, even though your still doubtful in the citizenships of the RP team players? Bro, open your mind, if your really really sure that these are all fil-sham players, then its up to you.

Mr. pinoy pac fan, when I said I will support the RP basketball team, I mean it. I support the team, the players, the coaching staff, even the waterboys..:D[/QUOTE]

I think the fil-shams really are those who opted not to stay in RP: Sonny Alvarado, Rob Parker, Al Segova. I don't know about Davonn Harp....

I think they were good but the thing is they're more looking forward to beat China and ignore other countries... and as it turn out... Korea outplayed/beat them!

The pressure is not on us to prove that they are not Filipinos.
The pressure is on Asi, Mick and co. to prove that they are Filipinos.
And the proofs theyve been showing arent 100% believable and convincing.

Cmon, man, Mick Pennisi looks like f@cking Gregg Popovich! There isnt a trace or a hint of asian or eurasian features in him, let alone pinoy features. He's 100% caucasian, and you gotta be blind not to see that.

im from australia and i play with alot of player with filipino lineage...in fact i dont see a hint of Filipino blood in them until i see one of their parents...

my point is....you dont look for their color...their name or where they came from...
mate...alot of filipino are displaced all over the world...you have to face the fact that filipino's can be in any shape and sizes and color now...

so stop being old fashion...i know pride is at stake here and i agree i want to see pure filipino in the line up...but you gotta admit we dont have 12 local men good enough to be a NT shoo in...

The same thing here in New Zealand... I'm playing with a lot of players with Filipino lineage... and I myself don't even think that they're Filipinos until they speak a slang-Tagalog (putol-putol) or see one of their parents...

Today we live in a borderless world... where people of different race interbred... if an American or a European who has a Filipino grandmother (e.g. Gabe Norwood) and is keen to play for the country... then lets welcome him... so what if he acts like American... who cares... we're all the same!

you're right! they put too much of their preparation in beating China at the expense of scouting and preparing for other countries like Korea... heck, they even have hard time beating Kazakhstan that time for the 3rd place...

I said Im done talking about this, but ok, one last time. Its not just the color of the skin, but where the guy comes from, his lineage and bloodlines. I follow closely everything about the NT ever since I was a young kid in the 1980s.

People out here in the Philippines are so excited about discovering new Fil-Foreign talents from all over. Even just rumors of good foreigners with possible ancestry from the Philippines we pick up (Jelani McCoy, Aguilar, etc) very quickly, and there's a buzz around the basketball community.

But Mick's case, he was there in Australia his whole life and nobody found him out until the late 1990s FilAm explosion. By then, he's in his late 20s. Normally, he'd get noticed by the Filipino community in Australia as a possible Pinoy player back home, as young as a HS player. But we got absolutely nothing about him before 1998. We do know he played as a local in the Australian leagues, and he's got a younger and more talented brother, also a professional player. If Pennisi is pinoy, they should also get his brother to play here.

Thats the last, last time. Thanks. ;)

Everytime china or kazakhstan faced the philippines, they employed man to man defense against the filipinos whom they know were having difficulties scoring over taller and bigger guards. Add to that, RP squad's ball movement and half-court plays & especially its outside shooting became tight and ineffective when playing against the chinese or kazakhs squad...

ENOUGH time for the team to reach full fighting form.

National coach Chot Reyes stressed this yesterday, maintaining that while the SMB-RP Team isn’t 100 percent yet it will be once the FIBA-Asia championship comes along later next month.

"We’re still in the process of cramming," Reyes told reporters Sunday evening at the Araneta Coliseum.

"After (the) SEABA (tourney last May), I would say the team was only 45-percent ready. After the (June 12-20) Serbian trip, the team improved, lacking only about 15-20 percent competitiveness," he added.

"I hope the Jones Cup and the Manila Invitational will take care of the rest."

The Nationals are working out two times a day either at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center at Ateneo or at the Sports Camp in Taguig until they leave for Taipei for the Jones Cup that starts on July 1.

Kelly Williams, Eric Menk, James Yap and KG Canaleta joined the team in training yesterday and, if things work out, the four will reinforce the Nationals in the Jones Cup from July 2-10 and in the Manila Invitational from July 12-15.

The real goal is the July 28-Aug. 5 Asian championship in Tokushima, Japan, that acts as a qualifier for next year’s Beijing Olympics.

Reyes said their focus now is on the Jones Cup and how to benefit from an otherwise rigorous stint.

"We’re playing no less than 13 games from July 2-15 and it’s a heavy schedule. So we’re looking at Williams, Menk, Yap and Canaleta to reinforce us in the Jones Cup and the Manila Invitational without guarantee of slots in Tokushima," said Reyes.

Reyes also said the four have legitimate shots at making it to the Tokushima joust or they would not have been invited to join the pool. With a month to go before the Olympic qualifier, Reyes said he faces the delicate balancing job of keeping the roster intact or making changes through the new additions.

"There’s the need to shore up the lineup, I must admit. But the question is, whether it would really help or mess things up," said Reyes.

"I admire my current 12 players. On our flight back home from Belgrade, I told them the situation, that some of them may be replaced. They said coaches know best and they’re ready for any eventuality. All they’re asking for is a fair shot," Reyes also said.

Reyes said he will make the decision after the Manila Invitational where the Nationals will play against China, Syria and Lebanon.

"I’ll see in training and in our last two tournaments how our new recruits will react in certain situations and whether the camaraderie of the team will suffer," said Reyes.

"The current 12 understand things in this team. Renren (Ritualo) is a good example. He’ll check in only in the closing seconds of a quarter to take a three-point shot. The next quarter, he’s back on the bench. That’s why Renren is not scoring because he’s not playing much," Reyes added.

But Reyes thinks they need another big man and a tall and quick all-around player.
"The two spot is very tight in this team with Mark Caguioa, Dondon Hontiveros, Renren and now Gabe Norwood. I have no problem with Caguioa and Hontiveros playing together since Hontiveros can slide to the three spot. The question is whether Caguioa and James Yap can play together," said Reyes.
Reyes is convinced Norwood is a legitimate Fil-Am, saying he’s talked with the player’s relatives personally in Los Angeles.

"What I don’t know is whether his papers can be processed in time for the Tokushima event," said Reyes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
JAMES Yap of Purefoods, Eric Menk of Ginebra and Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia Realty, along with Nino Canaleta of Air21 yesterday attended for the first time the SMC-National Team practice at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center, and all expressed thrill at having been invited to the training.

Yap, in particular, was overwhelmed so much so that he reset a scheduled vacation, including a planned trip with his celebrity wife, Kris Aquino, to celebrate their wedding anniversary next month.

"Kahit masarap sana magba-kasyon, dito muna ako dahil para ‘to sa bansa," he said. "At kung di man ako masama, okey din lang basta ma-experience ko lang yung training."

Yap insisted he felt no rancor when he wasn’t originally selected for the team earlier this year.

"Hindi sumama ang loob ko dahil nirerespeto ko ang desisyon ng mga RP coaches," said Yap, the 2006 PBA most valuable player. "Alam nila kung sino ang karapat-dapat sa team."

Menk, who saw action for the RP team that came within a heartbeat of advancing to the gold medal play in the Asian Games in Busan five years ago, said he was excited to report for practice.

"But not to be with Asi (Taulava)," Menk, laughing, said after practice.

Taulava, who was within earshot, responded while tinkering with his laptop: "Don’t believe what he said. He loves me."

Menk, who admitted he would’ve wanted to be with the team from the beginning, said he has no expectations about his inclusion now.

"Coach (Chot Reyes) didn’t guarantee me anything. I’m just happy to be here. I hope to play hard as I can in the Jones Cup, be a team player and help the team as much as I can."

Williams said sharing the same playing court with the rest of the national players gave him a natural high.

"It felt good just to be able to jump in and see these guys," Williams said. "Coming in today was crucial."

Equally important, Williams said, was the chance to talk to Reyes and clear up things that came out in the papers recently.

"I’m glad to be able to talk to coach Chot. He told me everything is water under the under bridge now. So everything’s fine, except for this protein drink which tastes funny. This one I’m not too crazy about.

Reyes said it was "too early to tell" if any of the additions to the pool, including Canaleta, would eventually make it to the team as regulars.

"On the surface, looking at them today, the team does look bigger and stronger," Reyes said. "But only after we do 5-on-5s and actual scrimmaging will we really find out."

A 15-man lineup without forward Danny Seigle, who is recovering from a hamstring pull in Belgrade, will leave for Chinese-Taipei before the end of June, with Reyes expected to use varying 12-player rosters for each game.

The FIBA-Asia, set July 28-Aug. 5, is the qualifying tournament to the Beijing Olympics next August.

The morning session was devoted to weights and shoot-around, while the afternoon involved 5-on-5 scrimmages.

The Philippines qualified for the Olympics a total of seven times in men's basketball.

The Filipinos placed 5th (4-1 record) in 1936, 12th (4-4) in 1948, tied for ninth to 16th spot (3-2) in 1952, and placed seventh (4-4) in 1956, 11th (4-3) in 1960, 13th (3-6) in 1968 and again 13th (3-6) in 1972.

With the loss of their best players to the professional league following the birth of the Philippine Basketball Association in 1975, the Filipinos surrendered their prominent position in the Olympics.

In the inaugural 1936 Berlin Games, the Philippines, captained by future Senator Ambrosio Padilla, settled for 5th place - the highest ranking by any Asian country until now - even though it lost only to the U.S. in the knock-out quarterfinals and scored victories over bronze medalist Mexico, Estonia, Italy and Uruguay.

The most recent RP Olympic team - the 1972 squad - was comprised of Jimmy Mariano (a team-best 13.9 ppg), Danilo Florencio (13.1), Adriano Papa Jr. (9.3), William Adornado (4.0), Rosalio Martirez (6.0), Manuel Paner (7.9), Rogelio "Tembong" Melencio (6.3), Narciso Bernardo (6.3), Freddie Webb (5.3), Ricardo Cleofas (3.7), Marte Samson (3.4) and Edgardo Ocampo (2.1). Coach of the team was Ignacio "Ning" Ramos.

Borat is a movie "trying" to portray the kazakhstan culture, but fyi, it is not in any way representing the Kazakhs. The Kazakhs are far far better than what Borat portrayed in this movie, it's the opposite actually. This movie has actually a much deeper sense. Just look for the movie and watch yourself.

Sasha Baron Cohen aka Borat, a TV personality in UK (like Michael V in RP) portraying/pretending to be a Kazakh national who acts like Patrick the Starfish, making fun of everything about his so-called Kazakh culture. :)

he started making his stuff at the Ali G Show, and he made some segments in UK since he's not that popular, many were fooled that he really was a Kazakh. Borat became internationally known with his movie Borat which is like a cultural/educational tour to the US for the benefit of Kazakhstan (something to that effect).

anyway, Kazakhs are not happy with what Sasha Cohen has been doing to them. hehehe.

i'm not saying that if they score 20-30 or even 50,, we'll win..

i just quote onono1's

(((Dude, its the PBA games you are talking about . Im talking about tougher international competition not a merely local tournament where our players almost have the same height, size and brand of play...That is also the reason why the PBA's great idol NBA and its star players are now being beaten in world championships and olympics. International brand of play is really different in PBA or NBA likewise. Everybody knows that )))

My starting 5:

1. Gabe Norwood
2. Mark Caguioa
3. Danny Seigle
4. Enrico Villanueva
5. Asi Taulava

Second Stringers:
1. Jimmy Alapag
2. Dondon Hontiveros
3. Niño Canaleta
4. Eric Menk
5. Mick Pennisi

Mismatches key
While Norwood will play point on offense, he'd take on the opposing team's SG on defense. Caguioa will defend the other team's point guard. This can create mismatches on the other end. Caguioa should be too fast for SG's, but too strong for PG's. Danny can also create problems for the opposing team. Even Norwood, if he's as good as advertised.

Role-Players
Taulava and Enrico should be role players, concentrating on rebounds, hussle, and defense. I like Enrico's feisty attitude. In international competitions, the never-say-die come-hell-or-high-water approach of Enrico to the game should come in handy. But admittedly, the weakest link in this line-up are the big guys.

K.I.S.S.
Simple basketball guys. Simple pick-and-roll plays should free up mark and danny. I say mark should be no. 1 option (especially to exploit mismatches). Use Danny for variety or decoy. Two pick-and-rolls (one for mark provided by norwood, and one for danny provided by asi) allowing the man with the ball two options, pass or shoot. The man without the ball can either pop out for 3 or slide in for a lay-up or dunk. (But knowing mark, he'd probably take the shot, hehehehe).

2nd Team for Run-and-Gun
I'm not saying that the first 5 should just play half-court basketball exclusively. But I believe that the second stringers, with less time on the floor, should be running like crazy. Full-court pressure, try to force some turn-overs. Unorganized play almost. Larong kalye (steet game)hehehe. This is where guys like Canaleta can fit in. Just tell him, no jumpers! Just lay-ups and dunks. And try blocking some shots!

Medium-range Shooting
The team should train for high-percentage mid-range shots. Enrico should work hard on this. Same with guys like Pennisi (should give up the 3-pointer and concentrate on 15-footers). With the defense focusing on mark and danny, enrico should get a lot of open looks from mid-range. Now, enrico is just 6'5". More often than not, he'd be smothered inside. So, take the jump shot. And be accurate with it. Asi? He should just concentrate on rebounding. Atleast a dozen every game, that should be his quota.

Defensive Stoppers
There should be SG and SF stoppers. Norwood. Dondon maybe. Delacruz (if he's healthy). Canaleta (just discipline the guy!). Kelly Williams, perhaps. This is where scouting comes in. Identify the 3-point shooters on the other end, and then ask Jawo for advice. If you know what i mean, hehhehehe.

I know there are a lot of ideas on how the NT should play. But this is my ten-cents on the issue. I have bolder, more revolutionary ideas but i'm reserving them for another thread. hehehehehe.:D :D :D
