Hi Phillipino friends :D
Im trying to find some info/scouting report/anything related to basketball about Rob Sanders. He used to play for Welcoat Dragons.
How he did back in Phillipines?
He played quite good. A strong small/power forward with an ability to put up baskets underneath, with a few long range shooting and some pesky defense, but could not pull the team off when they are down. I believe the Dragons only got to win a few (1?) win with Sanders in their line up. He was later replaced by a more effective Charles Clark but was later injured. Finally before the Dragons got eliminated, Wayland White suited up for the team.
But if he's to play in some other countries, perhaps he could be a great team player.

he is playing in PR with the league leaders Cariduros de Fajardo back in the BSN.
so far I have noticed a talented player who doesnt have a clue of what he is doing. he has played 4 games, he has gotten in foul trouble in 2 of those games.
He can jump, he can really jump.
And he can defend a lot...
he has not showed more. he cant score, he cant finish. he can rebound a little, but you would expect more from a player with his talent. He has not showed anything from long range and its really frustrating.
We already tried Ron Yates who was just "useful" and Erick Chenowith who was a disaster.
If anyone has any reason why I should not give up on Rob, please post it ASAP!
does anyone have his stats? :)
thanks for the post Mr Burns ;)

you are very welcome, Senor K2.:)
give up Sanders, 'mano. he is uncoachable. stats and talent don't matter if a player's head is as hard as a coconut.:D
i think he scored 19 points in one of his games where the Dragons lost against the Ginebra Kings.

:D from asia-basket:D
Outlook: Sanders is an extremely athletic forward. He has good size (6’7 240lbs) combined with a 40” vertical leap and is extremely fast on the court, with and without the ball. He is a match up problem for almost anyone. He will post up small forwards and overpower/jump over them, and he will take bigger players off the dribble using his quickness and athleticism. Can play facing the basket and going off the dribble or with his back to the basket. He is an underrated outside shooting who has three point range to go with a solid mid range game. Runs the court very well and is very active defensively, blocking shots coming from no where. Also he is a very tenacious rebounder and outlets the ball quickly to help his team go into transition. Young player with NBA upside and athleticism.

if im not mistaken (I can be wrong) those asiabasket.com, eurobasket.com latinbasket.com, etc...com websites scouting reports are done by their agents. so the credibility not very good.
he has not showed his shot, he take bad decisions and cant stay out of foule trouble, he also missed todays FT to lock the game so here we got another problem :D and you can take your man out of the dribble, but its not worthy if you cant finish or you are too scared to lay the ball without fear of someone contesting your shot.
8.5 ppg
5.5 rpg
58% ft%
in 4 games...
that doesnt cut it in the BSN
I already gave up :D
he abused the ABA

yeah, I expected it
if im not mistaken, the PBA game is more like the NBA. He is fast and his playing style is better for that game...
and giving another look to the asiabasket article I notice this is his first FIBA experience :D
maybe that's why half the time he is on the court he doesnt even know where he is standing at

Actually, Rob Sanders played 3 games with the Welcoat Dragons and Averaged 20ppg 10.7rpg 3apg and 3bpg
He was a bit hyped up when he got here considering he dominated in the ABA and when when he did well in his first game with 29 points and 14rebs. But that was a messy 29 points since he attempted 30 shots in that game.
I've spoken to his coach here in the Philippines and he was not really satisfied with his performance here. Yes, he is athletic, but that's it. He has an inconsistent perimeter game, I also doubt if he can accept the role of being a team player and his know-how on the game remains suspect. Im actually not surprised that he doing poorly in PR right now.
If you can afford it, give him one more game, if he cant get his act right. I suggest to send him back home. Olumide Oyedeji is definitely a better choice.

next game is the first game of the playoffs and the quality of the imported players here is way too good to have him putting number like 8 ppg and 5 rpg and in this team he has to be a team/role player. he wont be #1 neither #2 option.

Yeah, if cant accept that role, then he should catch the next flight back home.
I saw your team roster and stats and it seems that you have 5 imports on your team. no wonder you need more role players. You also have 2 NCAA division one standouts in Florentino Valencia and Javier Mojica. Both of them had good college careers and statistics. How are they faring? It seems that Valencia is still adjusting in your team. You should also think of replacing Chenowith, he's a beanpole who could not hold his own inside the paint.

no, only 2 imports hehe
Tyronne Washington is not on the team. Kevin Hamilton plays like a native, Chenowith and Yates were waived. The only imports are Uka Agbai and Rob Sanders.
Florentino Valencia is right now the 3rd big man coming off the bench. He is not playing much, but when he plays he shows sparks what could become a good player. His problem is that he is too short for this league.
Javier Mojica is maybe the best 6th man this league have. One of the most important pieces of this team. Defense, Hustle, 3 point shots... if he managed to develop a dribble and improve his passing he could become an international star down the road. I really love Javier's game, his attitude, his desire and his passion. Team Player. Every team need a Javier Mojica :)
Florentino Valencia
3.7 ppg
1.4 rpg
58% FG
48% FT
Javier Mojica
10.1 ppg
4.4 rpg
1.5 apg
34% 3pt
77% ft
21 minutes per game
19 games
Mojica missed some time due to a injury, head contussion or concussion or however... he is currently wearing a mask ala rip hamilton
Official Roster of the Team (http://www.bsnpr.com/equipos/index.asp?e=15&serie=1&anio=2007)
check how old this team is :)
Jesse Pellot Rosa played on the Virginia Commonwealth team that upsetted Duke on this years NCAA Tournament. He played like 7 games with Fajardo and signed with the Jets on the NFL. He is no longer on the team.

I see, thanks for the clarification. So Hamiton's playing for your a team as a local. Well, that explains it. I saw him play when he was still at Holy Cross and I must say that he's as versatile as an athlete can get. Not to mention that you still have Caro and Mojica to alternate at the guard spot and Rivas at the forward slot. Then You have a great team there. I suppose Uka Agbai is doing well, it seems that Sanders is the rotten tomato on your team. If and when you replace him, are you just thinking of Oyadeji or maybe someone else?
About Valencia, at 6'5 and i heard he's kinda bulky. Maybe he can be better off playing the power forward or small forward instead of 3rd stringing at center. that's a definite maybe considering his bulk. It's just hard to see such a talent to rott in the bench. I'd bet my money on Valencia over Sanders anyday.

rotation is pretty much like this...
PG- Caro, Christian Vazquez/MIke Gonzalez
SG- Hamilton, Mojica, Arroyo
SF- Sanders, Salgado/Mojica
PF- Rivas, Sanders, Valencia
C- Uka, Rivas, Collazo
Uka is doing GREAT!. He is everything for this team. He plays center for the smallest team this league have seen in years and he does it like no one else could do it.
Team Management went after Terrence Shannon to replace Sanders but league didnt aprove cuz Shannon was playing with recently eliminated Guaynabo Conqusitadores. Oyedeji is just an option I mentioned to some directives but since Uka has been doing so good at the C, they want a SF/PF.
Valencia is too slow for the SF and too small for the PF. He is bulky so he is playing PF right now. Valencia cant go out to the perimeter on players like Bobby Lazor, Marcus Fizer, Pittsnogle, Freije, etc... Sanders can do it, and he alreayd had success against Lazor. Anyway, Tino is part of the team and he is the future . I would hate if the team gets rid of him cuz you can see the talent on him, he is really good at faking. And yes, Valencia is a better basketball player that Sanders.

Well yeah, Shannon would have been a good replacement for Sanders. While Oyedeji and Uka would seem redundant. Valencia reminds reminds me of an Ali Peek (A player we have here in the Philippines). Great post game but lacks the height. Well since he's one of the conrnerstones of your team, then he'll get his exposure and playing time eventually.
I just have to ask how are you affiliated with the team. Are you coach Carlos Calcano? It's been good exchanging ideas. Well, i wish the team luck on the playoffs. If you've been following what's been happening with the Philippine National team, do give me us some inputs that you have. You can also ponder on sending the team in the Philippines for some exhibition games agaisnt PBA teams or even the National team. thanks!

no, im not coach Calcaño. I just know some people on the team.
I have been following a little bit about the Phill NT through this forum since they were banned by FIBA and the PBA league bla bla bla... Im aware of those issues (or at least I think Im aware :D)
I cant follow the RP games since im from Puerto Rico, I have only seen PBA clips on youtube, searched for some info on Asi Taulava and I dont know 95% the players you guys name around here but I really admire your passion for the game. if the world had more people with passion for basketball like you guys, world would be a better place.
I really hope you guys do something good this year, doing it your own way :) not with 7'0" half filipino guys from the states who cant walk and chew at the same time.
Sending a team to Phillipinas is not on me hehe. Anyway I think a trip from PR to Phi or fro Phil to PR would be too expensive.
Thanks for the chat, the info and the input, its been a pleasure ;)

That's why the produces of the Acapulco-Manila galleon trade were way too expensive for the natives back then.:D but hey, Filipinas and Puerto Rico both got a lot in common. Both Hispanic (Philipppines,in a way) and once manipulated by the benevolent America.
Basketball is really what we share in common now mano. Let's get corporate sponsors for exhibition games.:) Don Jaime Zobel de Ayala and Danding Cojuangco will be itching to have such exhibition matches between teams from our nations. Teams from Spain would be much more improbable to bring here. So let's get it on! ;)

I was a fan of his ABA team in Massachusetts and am quite familiar with Rob Sanders. When he went to the PBA he initially dominated with 29 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks - that was immediately after 30 hours of traveling. According to his ABA coach, he got sick when he was there due to the 100+ degrees heat in the practice facility and he lost 20 pounds right away which took his strength. He also had a hard time with food. This was his first time ever outside the US. The PBA team owner invited him to go out to a strip club and Rob turned him down. He was released the next day!
I believe he can dominate any league he plays in, including the NBA, if given the chance. It will take him awhile to learn the FIBA system - as Puerto Rico is his first FIBA experience - and yes he needs to work on his outside shot.
However, if you look at his stats last night for example:
He scored 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds (0 turnovers) in 10 minutes of play last night. Uka, who I know also from Boston and is a great player, grabbed only 3 rebounds in almost 30 minutes. If you let Rob play 30 minutes a game - he will score 20-30 points and grab 10-20 rebounds. He is also unselfish, almost to his detriment - he will make alot of passes. And you already know he is super athletic.
The coach should play Rob in the post and let him use his assets. But I agree he needs to work on outside shot and learning the FIBA structure because it is so different that playing 'American ball'.
I believe when he first got to PR he scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, right? And made two free throws to save the game? Then the coach cut him down to 10-15 minutes a game. How can you not average 8 points, 5.5 rebounds when you play so little?
Anyway I heard the Cariduros coach is tough and doesn't like to play "rookies" at all.
Sanders is being outplayed by Javier Mojica. Fajardo signed Sanders for him to be outplayed by a rookie?
he is always trying to go 1 on 1 vs his guy, beating him off the dribble, no wonder why he always take dumb shots
he was trying to force his way into PJ Ramos
coach wont play you if you take dumb decisions and coach has been playing rookies all year long, the team is full of rookies.

You were saying?? Better get your facts straight. So much for your Boy Rob Sanders.
6 fouls in 6-7 minutes? that's nasty.
Rob "All I can do is foul" Sanders Game Per Game
1st Game .vs. Ponce 16 pts, 8 rebs, 4 fouls, 21 minutes, 8-12 FT
2nd Game .vs. Santurce - 2 pts, 1 reb, 1 asts, 3 fouls, 2 to, 16 minutes
3th Game .vs. Guaynabo - 8 pts, 4 rebs, 4 fouls, 4/5 FG, 19 minutes
4th Game .vs Guayama - 9 pts, 9 rebs, 23 minutes
1st RR Game .vs Caguas - 6 pts, 6 rebs, 2 fouls, 2-7 FG, 10 minutes
2nd RR Game .vs. Arecibo - 5 fouls, 7 minutes
he managed to stay out of foul trouble in 2 games, and one of those games all he did was throw wild shots, disrupt the offense and run like an idiot trying to get some alley-up passes
Anyway, his defensive effort .vs. Bobby Lazor in his first game is much appreciated :)
Coach won the Coach of the Year Award.
And as we say in Puerto Rico...
Rob Sanders es bueno  ... Pero no sirve!.
