Again, welcome to all the new members.

It seems as if we are still having problems with posts that need english translations. Members from other countries are visiting your forum and coming out with no understanding because some of the posts are completely in the native language. So I must reiterate -- If any post is longer than five words in tagalog, please post an english translation for it - if not, any post or thread from July 5th forward, those will be deleted.

Couple Updates:

#1 -- I want to emphasize that this isn't a rule applied for or because of the Filipino forum, but has been a IBN rule since our inception.

#2 -- I've seen a lot of posts referring to the 5-word rule. Honestly, there is no 5-word rule. I mentioned five as a arbitrary number, the real meaning behind this is if the information you are posting is relevant -- post a translation. And anything longer than 5 words needs to be translated no matter the situation.

good on you mate, you've been patient long enough...can you go a bit further by banning those shameless repeat offenders? That will be a big favor to all Filipinos who post sensibly and follow the rules. I'm sure most of them (the sensible ones) will agree with me when i say that they're a disgrace to the red white and blue.

Well, I am hope to err on the side of caution and assume that those that continue doing posting native-language posts are doing so because they're not aware of the rule. And I accept that as a reasonable excuse -- not everyone reads announcements.

I do appreciate your support in this because IBN is enforcing this rule not for any other reason than because that is our one basic tenent that makes us unique.

Cheers,
Stuart

Also, there must be a rule against profanity! This is totally unacceptable. Sometimes Filipinos don't realize how bad four-letter words are when Americans read or hear them.

I agree with this. The language one uses shows the way he/she was brought up. And this should not only cover English words, but Filipino cusswords as well.

Here are two posts for you all in the other thread started by the Forum Administrator. I would lobby for the exclusion of those in violation of the rules. Let us then be civilized.

Anyway, about the Philippine team. It seems that with all of Ritualo's 3s, they should have ran away from those Japanese college boys. Is the reason a lack of defense, just as the NBA doesn't play defense?

In any major team sports - basketball, American football, soccer, baseball - defense wins championships. In the American NFL, teams who had mediocre offenses but great defenses have won many championships. In baseball, it's all about who has the best pitchers.

Maybe defense is what the Philippine team lacks. Basketball is not all about three-pointers and dunks and allyoops and no-look passes and showmanship and stupid trashtalk, but about shutting down the opposing shooters and rebounders.

Thanks for all the posts and thoughts on this.

I must also ask for patience because there has been a mass influx in the last 3-4 months and it will take time for IBN to adjust as it has always done.

IBN has had many huge registration pushes in the past -- from the Lithuanians in the beginnings to the Greeks to the Israelis to the first Filipino influx, the Greeks again to the turks to the Lebanese, and now, the Filipinos again. Each time IBN has had to adjust and mesh those new personalities and nuances of that particular region and made for a new IBN. This is whats going on again, and it will take some time.

This has been BY FAR the largest of new member registrations from a particular country. With the Regional Championships (Americas, Asia, Euro etc) coming up, we are going to see a huge jump again. This next 3-4 months are going to be busy and it may get a bit more bumpy before we settle down again.

Now Finally I come out with this page :)

I posted many times and I've always read 5-words rule when there is a filipino who used to type native language tagalog instead of english in w/c understandable by all members.

But maybe we can once forgive those who are violating the said rule, because sometimes they can't express well their feelings that sometimes 'overwhelming'...but after giving warning to them and still repeteadly doing it...that person can be accused as a offender and of course any offfender/s must be apprehended...

Be concerned! and follow the basic rules! and we can ruled out world! :D

No more guessing about who it is, guys - if you want to guess, take it to PM. this is a public forum and calling people out can make for a big mess.

If there's an issue, report their posts and the mods will take a look at them to see if they are actionable e.g. if it is lowering the quality of a thread, a forum, or the entire experience we can send this person a PM.

If you have a relationship with that person, PM them. we certainly want the discussions at IBN to remain on as high a level as possible.

Cheers, Stuart

hey MOD stuart. i appreciate your feedback about it but it seems that more and more posters here are trying to pick up on someone just because they think they far more superior than them. they said that some are posting here with irrelevant ideas and so many times participated in almost all discussions. i love to be in here since I can gain more knowledge and informations about people and players we don't know. i don't think it's a problem if the poster will ride on in some OFF TOPIC replies posted by some. as what you said, it's a public place and everybody are entitled to post their opinions and suggestions as long as it's not vulgar and offensive in nature. i think posting OFF TOPICS and sometimes irrelevant threads such as jokes and silly questions are just ok since it can just add color to the topic.

Basic moderator duties include deleting or modifying inappropriate posts, educating newcomers about forum guidelines, and possibly deleting accounts of repeat offenders. Additionally, moderators may be experts in their field who can help minimize unanswered questions.

Part Of The Game: Happy Halloween
Sports
Written by Tessa Jazmines(tjazmines@yahoo.com)
Wednesday, 29 October 2008 22:21

Halloween is not just getting scared about things that go bump in the night. It’s about anything that’s harum scarum.

Every year at this time, this column tries to make it a point to pay tribute to this fun holiday. (My buddy Beth Celis’s and my favorite holiday, actually.) Love the orange-and-black color motif (the color of basketball), the black bats and flying witches, the grotesque masks and the jack-o’-lanterns and their grimacing smiles.

This year, I’d like again to focus on the scary things that happen in the world of sports—that give athletes, fans and sports aficionados the heebie-jeebies—even if they’re not about vampires and goblins and white ladies.

Here’s a List of Sports Fear Factors that athletes and fans can identify with :

1. Injuries. Eugene Tejada, Terry Saldaña, Samboy Lim and other athletes who’ve suffered a bad fall, dislocated a shoulder or encountered a debilitating accident while in active play know how scary this is. Could it be the end of my career? Will I live to talk about it? Many have spilled and sprawled and still lived to do the same thing all over again—like those fearless motocross riders who already have pieces of steel in their bodies (to put broken bones together) but still conquer those table tops anyway. Injuries, or the thought of it, are fearsome—no doubt about it. Three letters that often give athletes a sinking feeling: ACL.

2. A Fatal Blow. You saw it in slo-mo in Million Dollar Baby. You’ve read about it in the papers and witnessed it in high drama on television. Boxers die inside the ring, and not just as exceptions. We’ve had a string of dead boxers from fatal blows in recent times. But does that stop hot-blooded boxers from climbing the ring? Not.

3. Disease. Lance Armstrong. Paul Azinger. Seve Ballesteros. All these have battled/are battling serious diseases that are surely life-threatening. In the case of Armstrong and Azinger, cancer. For Seve Ballesteros, it’s brain tumor (oligoastrocytoma). Conditions like these are enough to cause extreme depression. But Armstrong and Azinger have both licked the C and are back in harness. The great golfer is still currently battling with the demon. He has already undergone three operations to remove the tumor. Let’s wait and see. And pray.

4. Sudden Death. This doesn’t just happen in golf. It happens on the court, on the ice, anywhere the athlete can be in hot action. Most recently it happened to 19 year old Russian hockey player Alexei Chrepanov of the National Hockey League New York Rangers when he was playing for his Russian team Avangard Omsk against Vitiaz Chekhov. Just dropped dead, gorgeous. That’s what happened as well, to Celtics recruit Len Bias back in the ’80s, and to Reggie Lewis in 1993 and to Pete Maravich and Dennis Johnson. (An all-Celtics crossover?). Well, at least they crossed over happy to the great beyond.

5. Sour shooting. Not as scary but just as bad is when an athlete shoots the ball at the basket during a crucial game and can’t quite connect. It happened to La Salle in their best-of-three against Ateneo in this year’s University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) basketball finals. It happened to the Lakers when the Celtics outshot them in Game Six of the 2007-08 National Basketball Association (NBA) finals, a 39-point lead that will be hard to erase from NBA memory.

6. Sweeps. Uh-oh. They’re not playing our song. This happens when all the luck seems to be with the other team. Like the time the Cleveland Cavaliers lost all their finals games against the San Antonio Spurs in the 2006-07 NBA finals. Like this UAAP season for De La Salle, when Blue covered Green all season long in the elims and the finals. But that’s what they did to Ateneo, too, in previous seasons. As the commercial says: Bilog ang bola.

7. The Wallflower Syndrome. If you’re an average girl living in the ’60s and a bit of the ’70s, you know what this feels like: being passed over and virtually ignored when the boys cross the room and ask the girls for a dance, and it’s like you’re invisible. This happens, too, in player drafts, and it hurts, baby, it hurts. That’s why entering your name in the draft pool can produce a mixture of both excitement and dread in your system.

8. Decaying facilities. This may be true only for Philippine sports, or for sports facilities in other developing countries. But I’ve heard of horror stories about the kind of facilities that our athletes have to withstand and live through. A common room for all athletes with poor ventilation and just mosquito nets to provide protection. Formerly sparkling-white competition swimming pools that have wilted from neglect and are now being used as fish-ponds. Ah, but there are even uglier stories to hear. As Marlon Brando’s character said in Apocalypse Now, “the horror…the horror.”

9. The Beijing Debacle. Still a scary thought, two months after. The proud Filipino athletes of yesteryears reduced to a pathetic bunch of also-rans. Ah, but it pains us so to even remember it. Let’s skip this one.

10. Ghost Story. And as a bonus, a real ghost story. Several years ago, “ghost friend” and team-builder extraordinaire Frank Regis told us about his psychic niece Jinky, who asked him about a strange basketball game that they were watching on TV. “That other team has six players on the court,” she told him. “What’s he doing there?” Mr. Regis asked her to describe the player to him in detail, and when she did, he concluded that it was a deceased pro basketball player still apparently doing the haunts of his old environment. “It was Fort Acuña,” Regis said. Fort Acuña, former Toyota player and coach, passed away in 1978, a suicide.

And anything longer than 5 words needs to be translated no matter the situation.

hehehe thanks Ishmael jhan for the endorsement but rikhardur is actually doing a good job. A moderator does not have to be a big poster here.

Basic moderator duties include deleting or modifying inappropriate posts, educating newcomers about forum guidelines, and possibly deleting accounts of repeat offenders. Additionally, moderators may be experts in their field who can help minimize unanswered questions.

Anyway I am so busy helping out the SBP in so many things and I might not have the time already.

Tashakkur Ishmael

why did rikhadur close the ray parks, gian chiu, and japeth aguilar threads? it's hard to use the merged thread (update of filipino basketball players in the u.s.) The topic is just too wide, making interaction too difficult.

rik,

1. can u re-open the standhardinger thread? i think there's still a chance he can play for RP (Ben Gordon route).

2. any chance you can re-name the SBP Long-term national team pool thread to "smart gilas?"

3. This thread: "What does the Philippine team needs to watch out for?" is gramatically incorrect.

Many thanks!

1. There is no chance whatsoever Standhardinger will play for the Philippines. He already played for the U18 Germany national team.

2. That thread started by nardy is not just about the Smart Gilas team, it goes beyond that in new talents and starting the basis for a stronger NT.

Are you sure? I guess it depends on the U team, he played for the U18...

There should be an agreement between the two Basketball Federations involved but if there is a deadlock, under FIBA Rules it is the FIBA Secretary General who would make the ultimate decision. As per past decisions, it usually favors which team has the more need for the said player concerned in order to help the development of basketball of the country concerned.

but there is no need to open said thread at the moment. The Stanhardinger family would still like to contemplate on this as the Mom still thinks that Christian is still to young and raw to think about the Olympics.

I'm planning to a start a new petition for us Filipinos... its a petition to FIBA that we Filipinos support the one and only basketball governing body in the Philippines.. and that is the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP)!... We want to tell them that SBP has achieved so much for the last two years compared to BAP's dismal achievements between 1988 to 2005... thats almost 20 years and we had enough..

I made this thread so that I can ask you my fellow Filipino forumers and friends... its time for us to put down our hatchets and swords.. and stand UNITED... against our true enemies... the illegitimate BAP and its officials...

With the recent so-called FIBA "Special Commission"... I smell another suspension... and for us... another suspension is UNACCEPTABLE... We will not accept it.. FIBA doesn't know that a suspension will hurt not only the SBP and the basketball stakeholders that support it but also the Filipino people.. we are not just in the Philippines... we are everywhere..

Its time for us to unite, no more quarrells and arguements .. I want you guys to post your ideas here.. anything you want to be included in the petition... don't be shy... in this fight.. no realist, no patriots, no newbies, no old-timers, we are all in this together... We're all Filipinos!

My plan is to start a new petition and get as many signatures as we can... the minimum target is 1,000,000 signatures and the possible maximum of 5,000,000 .... this is to show FIBA we are serious... and once we get enough signatures... we'll draft a letter and send to FIBA and to all friendly basketball federations around the world... and tell them that we need their support.. and tell FIBA that we Filipinos support and recognize the legitimacy of SBP..

Cheers!

I re-posted this message from Donmar for the benefit of those who are not aware of our initiative, a petition to FIBA showing our support for SBP. . .Please visit the thread "Calling All Filipino Forumers". . . Cheers. . .

rik,

there's a question regarding the thread on philippine team in fiba asia championship. there's a thread started by donspark47 precisely for the purpose. but there is another opinion regarding using the philippine nt 2009 thread (as it is now under fiba asia championship section) for the same purpose.

for your judgment.:)

p.s. we pinoys like hanging inside the philippine basketball section. so we might prefer using the thread here in this section. however, i do understand that it may be more efficient to use the section under fiba asia championship as the pinoy section is usually crowded.

[Threads have been merged, thanks patay-butiki. rikhardur]

but there is no need to open said thread at the moment. The Stanhardinger family would still like to contemplate on this as the Mom still thinks that Christian is still to young and raw to think about the Olympics.

...and she is probably right about that. He played a very solid season in our Pro-B, which is the third highest league here in Germany. Yet he is still very young, very raw for international standards and would still need a lot of improvement before he could jump to the "big guys" in our BBL.
According to the latest rumours, he will join a college in the States this coming season. Let this guy grow up first and develop his game before making plans for the national team or the PBA.
Aside from that, I could imagine that he would seek his future rather in Germany. Germany is also in a rebuilding process, slowly starting to focus more on our young talents. What would stop him from seeking his chance here once he may be good enough? After all, Germany is still playing on a higher level and I could also imagine, that there is also more money to earn here if he shall decide to turn pro one day.

Well it could fit in both places, but since it's women's game and there's a specific section, that's why it was moved there. Anyway I think a redirect was made, so people may be able to find the thread in the Philippines section as well. Why don't you updated it? :p

hey rik. i tried. no luck. just one response. not really a fruitful way to continually discuss the philippine women's NT.

and if you notice, we pinoys use threads like "Womens Fil-Foreigner Basketball Players Prospects" (which technically should be in the women's game section) and "Women's Basketball team vs Men's basketball team in Phils" to discuss issues connected with the philippine women's NT.

just my two cents.

I was planning that thread but unfortunately, can't find Gilas full games on the net so I will not embarrass myself being the thread starter and relying on dole-outs from other posters.

Anyone got links from file-storage/download sites? If so, please start the thread and I promise to add more as soon I can. As you can see, NCC videos are Ultra-Rare. For Tabulation / Collection / Directory sake.

Good idea CKR13. Hopefully the Gilas fans will record their games and store those video files to the file sharing sites. I have a video from their game in Dubai Invitational, it was against Fadi El-Khatib led team. I forgot the name of the club. Lol.

Hey yo peeps! Have you committed Becirovism? Lol. :D

Becirovism is the art of misspelling or mispronouncing the names of foreign, non-Anglo-Saxon, names of European professional basketball players, especially those from the Eastern Europe and the Balkans. It takes its name after Sani Becirovic, whose name has been spelled and pronounced wrongly numerous times with examples such as: Betchirovic, Bechirovic, Sunny Baetschirowitch, Betsirovits, Bezirovic, Beatchirovichyz, Baetschirowicz, Beitsirovic, Becirovich, Bejcirovic, Beitsirovits, Baycirovic, Bechirovich, Bychirovic, Byetsirovitsh, Belsirovic and many more.
