I started to be a PBA fanatic as in a die-hard SMB fan back in 1993..the Hector Calma, Franz Pumaren, Ato Agustin, Allan Caidic, Mon Fernandez days..together with Kevin Ramas, Alvin Teng and Yves Dignadice..I really hate their rival Purefoods and Alvin Patrimonio and Jerry Codiñera's gang led by Coach Chot Reyes :D

They're more talents better than now... in 90 players were more magic moves, consistent shooting, pride etc... Also the NBA players too... in 60's 70's 80's 90's era were more talents...
Samboy Lim = a large step drove in to the basket, he could fake in to the air and shifting ball shot consistency, high vertical leap, very good shooting on 3, consistent sure shot with the defenders try to block, he can post and then surely shot on the fadeaway,,
Allan Caidic = a very consistent 3pt shooting eventhough over the defender trying to block him. consistent in clutch
Hector Calma = he is smart, large vision, he pass in to cutting free teammates, consistent shooting, pride and leadership, great quickness
Ramon Fernandez = he is consistent midrage shooting, elegant moves, consistent reverse layup, he can magic pass, large vision, smart player, great one on one in defense, quick foot fake, great pivot foot.
Chito Loyzaga = very good shooter in clutch, he could defend bumping and can don't gave a confort zone into 7 footer.
Robert Jaworski = pride, very good intensity, great leadership, patient, he defend can't go in the court of opponent, strong body collision, he could hurting the opponent, he is using his mind.
Alvin Patrimonio = small power forward very strong in the paint unstoppable, he can shoot for the 3, if double team by bigman but he get it, he is strong boxout, more intensity.
Jerry Condinera = great defender, good shooter in midrage, he is strong, he collide the opponents can't get, great timing on defense,.
Vergel Meneses = he had many many moves the defenders confusion, he could fake into the air and using the shifting the ball consistency shot, he can magic pass, high vision, very good clutch shooter, highflyer, he can post and surely shot on fade away.
Benjie Paras = a highleaping bigman, a unique moves like fake it and then using the other side reverse layup, great timing on defense.
Ronnie Magsanoc = he is a killer crossover dribble and more straight shooting on 3... He consistency shooting on 3 eventhough over the bigger defenders were trying to block.
Johnny Abarrientos = he is consistency shooting, great quickness, killer crossover dribble, he could magic shot over the many bigman defenders.
Jojo Lastimosa = a simple moves, he can post a fade away, consistent on midrage, he can shoot the 3!
Paul Alvarez = a great highleaper, he is quick, he is consistent in the air over the defender, he is smart.
Kenneth Duremdes = high vertical leap, good consistency, pride, consistency in crucial, good shooter, smart.
Jun Limpot = very good spot in midrage, he can crossover dribble, he had simple moves. consistent in inside.
They're many many more talents in the past better than now.

the difference why PBA was really exciting during the 90's is that illegal defense allowed one-on-one players to showcase their stuffs and the pro-grip was not yet banned during those times that's why they can grip the ball in mid-air and make those "wasiwas" shots.. :D
right now, what we need in the PBA is to adapt to the international brand of play, which is efficient shooting and good ball movement, somehow basic basketball. but I doubt if PBA is willing to take the risk of applying FIBA rules. :D

My Lolo's team back then was Swift which later became Sunkist..I remember their deadly 3, Al Solis, Vergel Menesses and Nelson Asaytono, if only Asaytono didn't get concious about Menesses having the better part of the team, that team could have reigned more during the 90's. I remember my lolo's favorite player was Sunkist's underrated player Keneth Duremdes, who was playing in the shadows of Superstar Vergel Menesses back then.

Meneses at Small Forward
Duremdes at Big guard

The Uytengsu fanchise enter the PBA in the 1986 season using the name of Hills Bros. Coffee. In the 1987 season, their 1st finals appearance was in the 3rd conference and Jose Slaughter was their import who had a decent 3 point shot. They lost to SanMiguel in the finals via 4-2 if im not mistaken and it was the last season for William Adornado. In the 1988 season, they used the name of Alaska and Adornado became the Head coach replacing Turo Valenzona. In the 3rd conference, Adornado left his coaching chores for unknown reasons and team manager Joel Aquino act as the head coach. He lead Alaska to a 3rdplace finish and players at that time were Ricky Relosa, Elpidio Villamin, abet Guidaben and Sean Chambers as their import. In he 1989 season, Alaska select marquee rookie in the person of Paul Alvarez, Ricric Marata and Elmer Cabahug. This is also the year when Tim Cone became the HeadCoach of Alaska after a stint with Vintage Group as commentator. Elmer Cabuhug became the 1st rookie to win an MVP in the All Star game.

In the 1990 season, Alaska enters the finals for the 2nd time. After a 2-0 lead vs. Purefoods, they lost via 3-2. In the 1991 season. Jojo Lastimosa was traded to Alaska in exchange for Elmer Cabahug. Eugene Quilban and Alex Araneta became the rookie of the team. In the 3rd conference, Alaska won its 1st Championships beating Wes matthews led Ginebra team 3-1 in a best of 5 series.Sean Chambers was awarded as Mr. 100%. Alaska had a dismal performance in the next two season. In 1993, they drafted Johnny Abarrientos from FEU and Johnedel Cardel, who was a member of the 1988 RPyouth team that place 3rd. In the 1994 season, this is the start of a good season for Alaska. Bong Hawkins became an Alaska via a trade from Sta.Lucia. Poch Juinio from UP became their rookie after a good performance in the 1993 SEAgames where in they won the gold medal under coach tembong Melencio. Cris Bolado was also their rookie. Alaska had a 3rd place finish in the All Filipino conference. SanMiguel was the Champion followed by Purefoods. In the 2nd conference, the two teams were seeded in the Semi-finals as the core of their team was part of the 1994 hiroshima Asiad. Alaska lend Abarrientos to the National team as a last minute addition to strengthen the guard position. In the 2nd conference of the season, alaska enters the finals but lost to Purefoods. In the 3rd Conference, they won their 2nd title beating SanMiguel via 4-3. Chambers was again part of Alaska.

Alaska had a fruitful year in the 1995 season as they enter the finals 3 times but managed to win 1 championships in the 3rd conference. They lost to Sunkist team twice in the first two conference. This year is also the entry of Jeffrey Cariaso in the league. He won the 1995 Rookie of the year and also the year where in Rudy Distrito was banned for life in the PBA due to a flagrant foul on Cariaso. The 1996 season was the best for the Uytengsu franchise as they won the Grandslam. Almost all of the awards given anually was with the Alaska. Johnny Abbarientos was named the MVP. 3 Alaska players was in the mythical 5(Lastimosa,Hawkins,Abbarientos). Poch Juinio was named the Best Improved Player. The 1997 season was still a good year for Alaska as they enter the finals twice. They lost to Cris King led Ginebra team via 4-2 but they managed to win 1 championships in the 3rd conference. Cris Bolado, the luckiest player in the PBA, was traded to Purefoods in exchanged for Rhodney Santos. Eventually, Purefoods won the 1997 All filipino conference. Kenneth Duremdes was traded from Sunkist team in the middle of the 2nd conference if im not mistaken while Jeffrey Cariaso was traded to Mobiline due to Alaska cannot match the offer of the Phonepals. The 1998 season was still good for Alaska as they won the first two conference of the league. If not for the 1998 Centennial team where in Tim Cone is the HeadCoach and 4 Alaska players namely Abbarientos,Lastimosa,Hawkins,Duremdes is in the training pool, they could have won their 2nd grandslam. later on, hawkins suffered an ACL injury in the middle of the 2nd conference if im not mistaken so he was not able to be included in the centennial team. From 1994 2nd conference to 1998 3rd conference for a total of 14 conference, alaska enter the finals 12 times and won 8 Championships including the 1996 GrandSlam. After they lend Johnny A. to the RPteam in 1994, it turn out very well. It only shows that if you supported the RPteam, God will give you the credit that is due for you. Kudos to the Alaska franchise, indeed the team of the 90's

The Record-breaking season of the 90s were:
1993 - when the league moved to Cuneta Astrodome, the first 18 playdates produced sell-out crowds, it also has a rich, talented draft led by Limpot, Pablo and Abarrientos.
1996 - when Marlou Aquino finally made his long, awaited debut in the PBA, and Crowd favorite Ginebra began its winning ways again.
The not-so successful season:
1992 - On Rey Marquez first year as PBA commissioner, gate receipts dipped during the All Filipino conference, ULTRA was renamed NASA and the people behind PSC were incompetent handling the venue, Aircon units were deteriorating.
1998 - the birth of the MBA had the PBA found a competition, the Living Legend, Sonny Jaworski joining the senate race signals the end of his playing career, PBA ratings were down without its main attraction.

More on 1990s:
First PBA draft that was shown lived on TV, it was 1991, Alex Araneta was the first round draft pick by Alaska.
1993 All Filipino when the league started a different semis format, 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 in a seperate Best of Five Series, San Miguel wins over newcomer Sta.Lucia, 3-1, Coney Island swept its corporate rival Swift, 3-0, winning Game 2 in OT rallying back and Game 3 in double OT.
1995, the league returns to the old dome, the Araneta Coliseum after 11 years, I remember the goal at the big dome was still outdated and old fashioned (The one we saw during the Crispa-Toyota years)

My Top 10 Most Exciting Finals series in the 1990s.
1991 Open: Ginebra-Shell
1993 All-Filipino: Coney Island-San Miguel
1995 All-Filipino: Sunkist-Alaska
1992 All-Filipino: San Miguel-Purefoods
1995 Governor's Cup: Alaska-San Miguel
1990 Open: Shell-Anejo
1990 Reinforced: Purefoods-Alaska
1998 All Filipino: Alaska-San Miguel
1998 Commissioners Cup: Alaska-San Miguel
1996 Commissioners Cup: Alaska-Shell
Among those I excluded that could been a Top 10:
1990 All Filipino: Presto vs Purefoods, the Finals went into Game 7, but the Tivolis first 3 victories saw the Hotdogs collapses in the endgame, while winning big in their victories over Presto, the deciding game saw Presto surprised everyone, winning by 19-big points, behind the inspired play of Arnie Tuadles, scoring 33 points, taking over from the injured Allan Caidic.
1993 Commissioners Cup, Swift vs Purefoods, despite being corporate rivals, it was a major disappointment, the finals series saw each team winning easily over the other with the outcome beyond doubt in every games they played.
1997 All-Filipino, Purefoods vs Gordons, its obvious from the start of the series that Marlou Aquino and Noli Locsin are still no match for the Patrimonio-Codinera tandem. it didn't lived up nor equaled the finals series these two teams played way back in 1988.

More 90s memories, funny moments I recall
1990 Third Conference, Purefoods was still unbeaten in the eliminations while San Miguel is winless, the beermen celebrated the return of their key players and coach Norman Black after the Asian Games, San Miguel had the game won already and in the last few seconds, Ramon Fernandez even stole the ball from Purefoods import Walker Russell on an inbound, showed some dribbling skills and baited Russell to steal the ball from him, as the crowd howled.
Remember the Swift-Shell brawl involving Ronnie Thompkins and Ricky Relosa, that game also saw an upset, one-point overtime victory by Swift without the ejected Thompkins, courtesy of Terry Saldana's game winning basket, as the Swift' bench whooped it up, Yeng Guiao keeps jumping looking like a kid and kidded with Meneses, who was lying on the floor overjoyed by that win, (shades of Mutombo lying during the closing moments of Denver-Seattle 1994 first round playoffs) for some reason, I also remember Terry Saldana making a sign of the cross after his buzzer beater (his famous scoop shot)
no love for The Bull, Nelson Asaytono? famous for his akward fadeaway one hand jolen/hookshot thing?

Pepsi was close to a victory here in the 2nd OT, when Jojo Lastimosa's turnaround shot tied the count at 167-all with a second left, forcing the 3rd overtime, the hotshots lost 7 players on six fouls, at one point they were all looking at the bench on who else is gonna play, of course, basketball fans were awake til midnight to watch the Philippines-Japan semifinals match in the Asian Games.

Got to love those days of high-scoring games, look at the Quarterscores, 34-21 and then 73-57 at halftime, but in 1997 the scoring began to decline.

I recall that SMB's losing cause to Purefoods in 1997 where they had a low 49-point output, 49 points in a 48-minute game, Allan Caidic was so frustrated that night.

That was Gretchen Barreto where Matthews have some issues, Matthews got into Barreto's then husband Joey Loyzaga's skin and apparently said something to Joey about wanting to go to bed with his wife.
I think it was Tony Harris who said something like that to Joey and was eventually confronted and slapped by La Greta.

great shooting accuracy in that days, i watched live. when carlito mejos was a rookie days and he's unstoppable in 3pt area and he fought for the win but it was short. allan caidic didn't play because of injured, broken his left hand and then his shooting skills has been affected before 1990 asian games

Fordmo,
Mon was correct the first time around. It was Wes Matthews that was involved in an imbroglio with Joey Loyzaga that eventually saw Gretchen Barretto getting involved. Tony Harris was infatuated with another actress, Ilonah Jean at that time. Similarly, Carlos Briggs, back in 1989, was involved in an unlikely relationship with starlet and Palmolive girl Sheila Ysrael.

Other trades:
1992 - Rudy Distrito of Ginebra moving to Swift for Pido Jarencio
1992 - coaching swap - Ginebra assistant coach Rino Salazar going to Shell while Shell head coach Arlene Rodriguez going to Ginebra as Jawo's assistant
1993 - Manny Victorino traded to Ginebra for rookie Victor Pablo, recently drafted 2nd overall by Ginebra but wanted to play for Pepsi Mega because of better offer
1995 - Stevenson Solomon shipped to Ginebra for the latter's second of two first round picks which turned out to be Jeff Cariaso

This precisely the reason why there should be no 2-import conference in the pba. The locals will always be denied. Winston "The Eraser" Crite was an awesome shotblocker! I remember Samboy Lim's last second second shot erased by him. Queenan i also remember and is it Freeman Williams, who has a jumpshot from mid-court? Mejos after scoring 20+ pts back-to-back in his rookie year seemed to disappear after. Yturri the import defender lol and cadel mosqueda, spotter on mid-range, where's naning valenciano? lol Pepsi the PBA's favorite whipping boy!!! Oh i forgot 5' 5" Mark Anthony Tallo.:D

Upon further review of Google, I got the wrong guy. All the while I thought it was Tony Harris because I thought it happened when Joey was still with Ginebra. Joey was playing for Sarsi na pala when the famous (and understandable) remarks were uttered by Wes and leading to a fight. Any way Wes got his just desserts when Ginebra was soundly beaten by Alaska and Sean Chambers in the 1991 3rd conference Finals.

True. Note that Joey Loyzaga left Ginebra after he was relegated in the first dispersal draft of the league where three players from the rosters of each of the 8 teams will be released to the dispersal pool in season 1990. This was the same year when two expansion teams, Diet Sarsi and Pepsi Mega joined the league, making it an 8-team PBA roster. Hence, the need for a dispersal draft for these two teams.
The younger Loyzaga eventually wound up the top pick overall of the 1990 PBA Dispersal Draft after being taken in by Sarsi. Tonichi Yturri, given up by San Miguel Beer, was second overall and taken by Pepsi. Elmer Reyes, another SMB stalwart, was drafted third overall by Sarsi again.
As for Wes Matthews, he played for Ginebra in the 1991 Reinforced Conference. Matthews would have been one of Ginebra's best imports ever had he powered the team to the championship against Sean Chambers and Alaska. Alas for him, Jaworski and the Ginebra minions, he was shackled by the hounding defense of Paul Alvarez. And because of his countless controversies as well (his much touted spat with Onchie Dela Cruz which the latter took literally), Jaworski saw no need in rehiring his services the season after.

Purefoods traded its rights for the no. 1 pick in 1990 to Alaska for Elmer Reyes. They did it when Vergel Meneses finally admitted of having falsified his papers. Purefoods hoped they would pick him.
What is the issue of Vergel Meneses admitting the falsification of his papers? What happen?

The PBA then had an age limit of 23 years old for a player to enter the draft, Vergel was only 22 in 1991, good thing he admit it earlier or may have faced a two-year sanction of being banned from playing in the pro league.

mga idol i would like to ask about Paul Alvarez game high of 73points when he was still playing for alaska, what was the year? what i remember is that Alaska beat Formula Shell when Alvarez scored 73pts. He erased the previous record of caidic which was 68pts set on Nov2, 1989. Later on Caidic erased Alvarez all time high of 73 pts via 79 pts which was set on Nov21,1991.
