View Full Version : RP-Kuwait Tune-Up Game
bolabasket

Kuwait is another Middle-eastern Team with western-influence on basketball. They rank (#44) behind Lebanon, Iran, Qatar and Syria in the FIBA Rankings, they still have a solid team built around their slamdunking star player 6-4 Osamah Mubarak. They replaced Saudi Arabia.
In the last FIBA Asia Championships, they finished 13th.
They lost to Korea 80-85
They routed Malaysia 88-56
They lost to Saudi Arabia 84-87
Do you think the RP Team will rout these guys or would just play through the motions to avoid injuries? Will Danny Seigle finally play? Will the final roster of the RP Team be known on this game?

This game will not be the same as the 4 nation tournament. China, Lebanon and Even Syria is way better than this Team. The only thing i guess why coach chot would play with them is for them not to get rusty, at least they would be playing against a national team. Secondly, just maybe, at this time he had already choosen the 12 players and see how they play as a team together with Danny S. for him to feel the game.

En route to Tokushima, Japan, for the FIBA-Asia Men’s Championship, the national team of Kuwait will make a side trip to the Philippines to play a series of tune-up games here.
Led by delegation head Muhammad Al Saif of the United Arab Emirates, who made the arrangements through his friend Buddy Encarnado of Sta. Lucia, the Kuwaitis will play against the RP team, the Realtors and a number of amateur teams from the PICAA.
They are expected to arrive in Manila a week before the FIBA-Asia championship.

kuwait has a good chance of winning team pilipinas in a game and maybe 2 cuz as everyone knows philippines has problems against weaker teams , the weaker the team the more the chance of them getting beaten(kazakhaztan, japanese uni team...)so they are lucky not to be in a group with UAE,kuwait,indonesia,hongkong........as ridiculous as it sounds , its true :)

If we lose to kuwait then it will only mean one thing and that is we won't be successful in japan. But I doubt it will happen since the reasons we lost those games were the lack of killer instinct and considering the infancy of the team. I think our team have these aspects now but not fully develop yet.The previous games were very helpful in determining the pros and cons. Hope our fangs and talons will be mature enough comes Tokushima. :D  :D

I can easily guess that Chot Reyes will not play Danny Seigle, Mark Caguioa, Kelly Williams, James Yap, and all our other top guns.
Plus, Kuwait's last performance in the FIBA Asia Championships wasn't a true showing of a sport. One of their players threw a punch on one of the officials.

Right. What a preposterous type of assumption such an argument that you present. It would have been better to say, and more specifically assume - that most teams in Asia now are at the top of their game. Any team can beat anybody. Of course, we're not discounting the strength and advantage of China team A. The remaining teams like Lebanon, S. Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, Jordan, Iran, Syria, Kazakhstan, Japan and Qatar are all strong contenders for the FIBA-Asia crown. Most of these teams vary in strength and weaknesses. Such that Leb have the heft, height, shooting and the one-man-wrecking-crew in Fadi. On the other hand, Phi may not be as tall, but are faster, more athletic and skilled, uses a deeper bench, and also great in shooting. In short, to say that Phi is weaker and Leb is stronger is baseless and ridiculous. RP beat Leb 4 to 1. And Leb won only by a highway-robbery-miracle-of-a-shot-fahed (well, the guy's impressive). It is much precise to say that Leb won against a stronger team which is France and lost to its rival RP which is weaker than France. Rivalry can be accepted between RP and Leb. But RP is weaker? Those 4 wins negates your only argument. Cheers!:D

I was just teasing when i said.... that's why we lost the 4 games.
Second we don't have that height advantage. Our pgs and sgs are under 188 cms
our wings SF= fadi is 196 cm SF=jean abdel nour 192 SF= brian beshara 204(exception)
Our centers except joe vogel are 203cm = Roy Samaha 202= Ali fakhredine
PF/c = 199cm Tawbeh and Balaa
Third, your players and bench are not more skilled. We have injuries, two of the most athletic guys in Leb and Asia like Mario Abboud, and Ghaleb Reda are not playing with the team plus Ahmad Ozeir who is not playing I don't know why??.
If we had better preparations and a Lebanese coach like Sarkis and Abou Chacra we could have easily won all the 5 games. At least the latter coaches play the system.
Dragan Racca failed with Sagesse how could he succeed with a National Team!!!??
Your team is good challenger
Cheers

Checked. I think it was 5 wins.
2 in Philippines Exhibition which I watched myself. Second Game Leb was routed. First game was close.
1 in FIBA Champion's Cup. Leb had 2 or 3 imports and RP won that with no imports at all.
1 in Jones Cup 2007, RP lost to Leb by a hair line courtesy of Fahed.
2 in Manila Invitationals 2007. RP won the championship convincingly. If you were able to watch the warm-up drills, Alapag (5'8 Ft height) dunked more than thrice (one alley-hooped) and Leb players were all smiles. That's respect for a rival. Make it Bird and Johnson.
Bench players? We have more players stronger and better not wearing the NT uniform. It's just all about chemistry and what's best fitted.
Now, don't get me wrong here. We admire Leb NT. We feel that they are great and worthy rivals of RP NT. But the fact remains, RP is not weaker. You can always be proud of your NT, that's given, but at least be realistic my friend.

What league was that? Pluto or Mars Cup?
It was FIBA Champions Club 2007. RP won. The score was not even close: 94-83
Blue Stars Lebanon
William Pippen
Fadi El Khatib
John Carter
Rony Fahed
Jean Abdel Nour
Basem Balaa
I don't recall the other players from your NT
SMC Pilipinas
Donaldo Hontiveros
Mark Caguioa
Michael Pennisi
Ranidel De Ocampo
Daniel Seigle
Kerby Rymundo
Pauliasi Taulava

Jim Alapag
Enrico Vililanueva
Anthony Dela Cruz
There's no point to this argument. Because you'll only say, "We're strong! Unbeatable! Best of the Best! You'll be routed by thousands of square inched points" "And you're so tiny and weak, we'll smite you".
Yeah right. Nobody believes your argument. The weaker one.
Try to prove your points by staying to facts.
Lebanon is a strong contender and maybe the biggest block to hurdle for RP if our NT goes past Jordan, Iran and China B. Lebanon is great, for real. We respect our NTs rival. Not thinking of our momentum or our 5 convincing wins against Leb. Nor the miracle shot by Fahed.
The fact is, anybody, any team is slated to win the FIBA Asia crown. That is called Globalization. That's what Interbasket is about. One world, one basketball. Everyone is talking about it. USA is no longer the basketball monopoly. It is now world and international basketball.
In behalf of all Filipino, Lebanese and every Asian fan waiting for the things to come in Tokushima, I can only assure one thing. We're all in store for a hell of a great and heart-pounding basketball event. Cheers!:D

And the second import missed a lot of 2pts inside. Its not an excuses maybe Rp has found some ideas to stopped blue stars players, maybe.

Yeah right. Whatever. Happy? :D
That SMC Team Pilipinas is not even the same team in Jones Cup or in Manila Invitationals.
Let's wait for Tokushima and see what happens. I just hope that our teams will be left standing 'til the final. For myself, Jordan, Kazakhstan and Lebanon are the teams to beat for RP. Jordan (height and heft), Kazakhstan (sweet shooting ponomarev and company) and Lebanon (the ever reliable Vogel and Khatib). That is, if China (rumors) will not be fielding in half of its' Team A to Team B or those that will be cut from A, since B was humiliated in Manila recently. That will make four teams to beat for RP. Let's all hope for the best.:D

I'm not bragging here coz I hate bragsters. but the way snipes belittled RP NT, there's no basis in his words but jelousy. the Lebanon will have to win 4times more against RP NT before he call RP NT a weaker team than Lebanon. even a child knows how to compute those 4 wins by RP NT against a single lucky win by Lebanon. :D I've watched all those games, 3 of which I've seen live, and I can see Lebanon struggling with only El-Khatib being the equalizer, and that's it, I do believe that RP NT is a better if not a stronger team.
I'm hoping for a rivalry between Lebanon and RP, whether its unhealthy or healthy. I do hope that snipes saw what happened to Roy Samaha, I hope they'll all have a cut above their eyes..LOL :D

Let them explain this thing to their countrymen. And then, let the FIBA Qualifying speaks to us on who is really strong and who is not. :)
And about the topic, the only thing that I think our team will benefit here is preparedness on playing as a team(final 12) and to avoid rusting before 28 comes. I think that our NT is much better than Kuwait team, whom we beat even with them fielding two imports.

i'll disagree w/ u here bro...Seigle needs playing time to get his rythmn and confidence back. If indeed he is past his injury, i think chot will give him playing time. Practice and an actual game are miles apart in terms of gauging if he will be fit come tournament time. Coming from injury, players are known to be tentative and rusty...so this kuwait games can give chot an indication of how he'll do in japan.

FINAL 12 TO BE KNOWN ON EVE OF FIBA-ASIA CAGEFEST
www.pba.ph
SMC-RP vs Kuwait series this weekend at Sta. Lucia, Pasig
Thursday, 19 July 2007
The biggest question mark over San Miguel-Team Pilipinas will remain unanswered even as the national team wraps up the final week of its preparation for the FIBA-Asia Men's Championship in Tokushima.
"I doubt if we're going to make an announcement here," said SMC-RP coach Chot Reyes on the final composition of the squad tasked with bringing the country back to the Olympics Games basketball competition for the first time in 36 years.
"Doon na lang pagdating ng Japan. Pa'no kasi kung may ma-injure pa or whatever?"
All 15 players in the pool, Reyes said, will leave for Japan on July 25, be billeted at the Prince Hotel, practice twice more at the ASTY Tokushima gym, and there await their fate prior to the submission of official lineups during the Managers Meeting on July 27.
SMC-RP opens its campaign in the eerily-labeled "Group of Death" against Iran on the 28th before taking on defending champion China on the 29 th, and Jordan on the 30th.
"We're not thinking of Iran yet," Reyes said. "We'll get to that next week after the Kuwait series. Monday or Tuesday siguro."
The top two teams from that bracket will advance to the quarterfinal round. The four highest-ranked teams next move to the crossover semifinals where the winners will clash for the championship.
If China, which is seeded to the Olympiad as host, makes it to the final, then the other finalist earns a ticket to the Games as well as Asia's "other" representative.
But if China fails to reach the final, only the FIBA-Asia champion gets an invitation to Beijing.
All members of the RP pool – Jimmy Alapag, Asi Taulava and Renren Ritualo of Talk 'N Text, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand and Eric Menk of Ginebra, Kerby Raymundo and James Yap of Purefoods, Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros of San Miguel Beer, Tony de la Cruz of San Miguel, Mick Pennisi of Red Bull, Ranidel de Ocampo of Air21, Fil-Am Gabe Norwood of George Mason University, and Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia Realty – attended Thursday morning's resumption of practice at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center.
Menk, Yap and Williams are late additions to the team, joining the Nationals for the 29th William Jones Cup tournament in Taipei and the Smart 4-Nation Manila Invitational Championship, while Norwood, whose papers are being processed, awaits the release of his Philippine passport.
"We're looking forward to the Kuwait games," said Reyes of Friday's exhibition at the Sta. Lucia East Mall and Saturday at the Caruncho gym, both arranged by Sta. Lucia governor Buddy Encarnado.
"We'll take a look at the progress of their players coming in from the injured list, and also how well Danny (Seigle) can play with the new guys who've come in."
Seigle missed nearly three weeks of RP team practice after he went down with a hamstring pull followed by an ankle sprain when he tried to come back prematurely.

i hate to say this but i have to: the phils won over lebanon 4 out of 5 times. i was able to watch 4 games live and 1 on live tv and lebanon never dominated the philippines. even once. and i know most of you guys will disagree, the lebanon team sucks. i think taiwan is way better than this guys. vogel and katib is always playing for almost the entire game against the rp team. their rotation is limited to 7-8 players only. vogel and katib is already occupying the 2 slots so the remaining 3 slots are going to be used by 5 other guys with the majority going to overrated brian beshara. i think beshara cant even score against filipino players 4-8 inches smaller than him. most of his scores came from free-throws. vogel? nothing to say about this guy. he's a good shooter but 40 minutes? common!?! your team has 12 players right? hey i also noticed that, the coach cant use them because they suck. katib? this guys is a work-horse. and half of his scores came from free-throws. he's going to drive hard and fish for a foul against smaller and lighter opponents. if the refs will not call the fouls that he is fishing, the whole lebanon team is doomed! no free-throws=no points.
and rp team is weaker? and i'll be damned! your team cant even win even without our number one scoring option, danny siegle. your team even tried not playing katib against the philippines. but we returned the favor and did not play caguiao. and the rest is history. losing to a weaker team? that gotta hurt.
Seigle plays in RP tuneup vs Kuwait
Friday, July 20, 2007
Top gunner Danny Seigle will finally play for the SMC-RP quintet as it winds up its all-out buildup for the Fiba Asia Olympic qualifier with two more games against Kuwait before leaving for Tokushima, Japan Wednesday.
The Naionals and the Kuwaitis will clash at 5 p.m. today at the Sta. Lucia East Mall gym today and at the Caruncho gym in Pasig tomorrow.
“Basically, this is good opportunity for Danny to play with the new guys. Danny never got to play with them in the Jones Cup and in the Manila Invitational,” said national coach Chot Reyes.
The Nationals are in the process of fine-tuning their game in the final stage of their preparation for the FIBA elimination in Tokushima from July 28 to Aug. 5.
The team, however, isn’t likely to get a tough challenge from the Kuwait squad, which was beaten, 72-77, by the Vergel Meneses-led Wang’s Ballclub in an earlier tune-up game. Kuwait didn’t qualify for the Olympic qualifier.
The RP-Kuwait series was arranged by Sta. Lucia manager Buddy Encarnado.
The Nationals were back in practice yesterday after a three-day break following the completion of their tough grind in the Jones Cup and the Manila Invitationals.
They will continue to hold their morning practice today and tomorrow even as they play the Kuwaitis in the afternoon.
But a week before the start of the Tokushima joust, Gabe Norwood and Kelly Williams still have to complete their documents.
“I don’t know the development because I am not involved in the processing papers. What I know is that Kelly’s expecting to get his Philippine passport tomorrow (today),” said Reyes.
“The Kuwait tune-up games give us the opportunity to see how Danny Seigle, Eric Menk, James Yap and Kelly Williams play with each other,” said Reyes.
“Seigle and Menk are good friends but they have yet to play together,” Reyes added. – Nelson B

I don't think that its the right time to become boastful. You see, you really cannot compare two teams based on their performances against other teams. You have to go to their Head 2 Head match-ups. Im not going to discuss Philippines and Lebanon again but until Lebanon can add claim to that freakish win against RP in the Jones Cup to give them their first win in five games, then there is reason to believe that RP is superior to Lebanon.

5 p.m. – Kuwait vs. SMC-Pilipinas
The San Miguel-Pilipinas Nationals showed that how ready they were for the FIBA-Asia Men's Championship by defeating the Kuwait national team 84-68 Friday night at the packed Sta. Lucia East Mall.
The two teams meet a second time at the Caruncho Gym in Pasig on Saturday in matches arranged by PBA governor Buddy Encarnado. The game will serve as the Nationals' final tuneup before they leave for Tokushima, Japan, on July 25, according to the RP team management Friday night.
SMC-RP faces Iran on July 28, defending champion China on July 29, and Jordan on July 30 in the preliminary round of the FIBA-Asia Championships, the qualifying tournament for the Beijing Olympic to be held in August 2008.
In Friday's game, the Nationals applied the finishing touches to a grueling five-month long training hampered at times by injuries and buoyed by the addition to the pool of three key players.
Thus they pulled away from the Kuwaitis early in the game, taking a 46-25 halftime spread.
In the FIBA-Asia Championships, Kuwait is bracketed in Group B with host Japan, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates.
National coach Vincent "Chot" Reyes viewed the games more as a commitment than as part of the immediate needs of the team.
"The Kuwaitis are nowhere near the teams we're preparing for," Reyes said. "They are small and quick while we're getting ready for tall opponents in Group A."
Danny Seigle, hobbled by a hamstring pull and later an ankle sprain that kept him from suiting up for three weeks, saw limited action for the first time.
"He looked good. Kaya lang minedya-medya ko lang naman dahil nakakatakot eh," Reyes said. "Physical maglaro yung Kuwait at baka madisgrasya pa si Danny, eh paalis na tayo."
At least three Kuwaiti players limped off the court with various injuries after the Nationals responded in kind to their opponents' bruising style.
James Yap led the Nationals with 18 points. Seigle added 13, Renren Ritualo 13, Gabe Norwood 8, Ranidel De Ocampo 8, Asi Taulava 5, Eric Menk 4, Dondon Hontiveros 4, Tony Dela Cruz 4, Kelly Williams 3, and Jayjay Helterbrand 1.

MANILA, Philippines—The list of victims has just gotten longer for the San Miguel-Pilipinas Team.
James Yap returned from sick bay to fire 18 points and lead the Nationals to an 84-68 thumping of Kuwait in a goodwill game on Friday at the Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall gym.
Danny Seigle also came back to active duty to shoot 13 and the Nationals were never really threatened. Curiously, though, the Nationals played down their readiness to do battle in the Fiba-Asia Championship slated July 28 to Aug. 5 in Tokushima, Japan.
The Philippines came into the match fresh off a rousing triumph in the Smart 4-Nation Invitational, where it humbled Lebanon in the Finals on Sunday.
The team has now played a total of 14 games in 19 days, counting nine straight outings to finish third in the Jones Cup tournament in Taipei.
The two teams play the last of two games in their tune-up at the Carruncho Gym today.
Kuwait is bracketed in Group B along with host Japan, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates.
Reyes viewed the games more as a commitment than as part of the immediate needs of the team.
“The Kuwaitis are nowhere near the teams we’re preparing for,” he said. “They are small and quick while we’re getting ready for tall opponents in Group A.”
The Philippines belongs to what Reyes described as the “Group of Death” in Japan. The Nationals will play Iran on July 28, China on the 29th and Jordan on the 30th.
Renren Ritualo had 13 points, Gabe Norwood and Ranidel De Ocampo eight each.

mga tol kitang kita kung full strength yung team malamang mas malaki yung tambak at score natin ang maganda nyan di gaano nakasama pag sama ni seigle para sa akin unfair yung fiba ranking.
translation: friends as we all see if our team gets in to full gauge/strength they could have been win by a calendar month (30points). This is good indication that Danny seigle can blend well to his teamates. As for my opinion our Fiba ranking is very questionable the way our team performs on those higher ranked teams ahead of us

When RP beats lebanon in a game which is either not a friendly or not on their homecourt than i,ll count it , to me its 1-0 for lebanon :) + the RP wins against leb dont mean anything if they cant reach the semis or even the 2nd round to face lebanon since they are losing almost every other game........

When RP beats lebanon in a game which is either not a friendly or not on their homecourt than i,ll count it , to me its 1-0 for lebanon :) + the RP wins against leb dont mean anything if they cant reach the semis or even the 2nd round to face lebanon since they are losing almost every other game........
your right but we will make it to the semis and to the finals whatever team we face even Lebanon. In the end we are still positive than we can qualify.

SMC-RP cagers score repeat win over Kuwait
07/22/2007
Lebanon? Syria? Kuwait? Questions regarding these Middle Eastern teams will be dealt with in due time.
Right now, only one squad from that desert wind-swept region matters: Iran.
Even Jordan, which San Miguel-Pilipinas faces after Iran and defending champion China in the preliminary round of the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship in Tokushima, Japan next week, will have to await its turn.
The Nationals had put away Syria and Lebanon and its star player Fadih El Khatib in topping the Smart 4-Nation Manila Invitational Championship a week ago.
And last night at the Caruncho Sports Center in Pasig, SMC-Pilipinas handed the Kuwaiti national team a consecutive loss, 100-65, following an 84-68 beating at the Sta. Lucia East Mall Gym Friday.
With all pre-war strategies mapped out, and the troops armed and ready for battle, the generals of the Philippine team tasked with sending the country back to the Olympic Games basketball competition after the last one left in 1972 in Munich now buckle down to work on how to get past the Iranians on July 28.
The Chinese, possibly reinforced by Team A players after the way they were embarrassed by the Lebanese and the Syrians during the Manila Invitational, come up next for the PBA-backed squad on the 29th, followed by the burly Jordanians, who beat the Nationals in the 29th William Jones Cup tournament, on the 30th.
If SMC-Pilipinas survives the so-called “Group of Death” and advances to the quarterfinal round, then, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait, assuming they move on from their respective groups, may have to be taken care of.
Judging from the way the Nationals carried themselves in their last tune-up game, Kuwait, if it comes up later, shouldn’t be much of a problem for RP coach Chot Reyes and his staff.
Gabe Norwood led the Nationals, who took a 55-21 lead at the half, with 13 points.
Prior to its departure on July 25, SMC-RP takes a break today, returns to practice Monday morning at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center and then attends afternoon Mass at the San Miguel building.
The team meets at Sportskamp at The Fort on Wednesday morning before proceeding to the Centennial Terminal for the afternoon flight to Tokushima.

Norwood led RP with 13 out of 100 pts? Everybody must've scored at least 10.

If everybody scored at least 10 pts, then the lowest score that the RP team can have is 123. Hehehehe:D
Just kiddin bro., I agree that everybody contributed considering that the top scorer only has 13 pts and our total score being 100. At least 4 players might have scored double figures.
Oh I wish we could be in group C.....

100 - 65 RP win.
very, very good result. I guess coach chot wanted to make a statement just before tokushima. only a week to go. here's to hoping we get past the group of death. that's the toughest part of the tournament for us. if RP gets out of the group of death, watch out asia.....:D

no country has suffered as much as RP in basketball. I guess all the disappointments in the past will be erased come tokushima. This is what I am hoping for.

good point, bro. seems like we have an excuse for everything. a win is a win. a loss a loss. a tune up a tune up. tokushima? its all or nothing... and nothing in between, hehehe...win or lose, I'm a basketball-loving filipino through and through..
