US-HONED REYES 1ST 2007 PBA DRAFT APPLICANT

Tuesday, 19 June 2007
STRESSING he's ready for the big league, sleeky guard Ryan Reyes made himself available by becoming the first player to apply in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Draft on August 19 at Market Market in Taguig.
The 6-foot-2 Reyes, a former high school teammate of NBA three-point champion Jason Kapono of the Miami Heat, is Henkel-Sista's star playmaker in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) where he steered the Super Sealers to a third place finish in the recently-concluded Unity Cup.

In his stint in the season-ending conference, the 23-year-old Reyes led the Super Sealers in scoring with an average of 11.4 points per game, while shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Reyes, who played alongside Kapono at Artesian High in California, averaged 2.4 steals a game to pace the league, while being named Fantastic Freshman during the PBL's conference awards.

Accompanied by his agent Charlie Dy, Reyes personally visited the PBA Office to submit his application and other pertinent papers.

"Handang-handa na," said the early pro hopeful in straight Filipino. Although raised in the US, Reyes' parents were both still Filipino citizens at the time he was born.

Prior to his PBL stint, Reyes also saw action in the National Basketball Conference (NBC) and played for the Cebuana Lhuillier sponsored national team in 2005.

He is actually among the foreign-honed players being eyed by coach Chot Reyes for inclusion in the RP men's training pool.

As the July 20 deadline for local born players – and June 29 for all Fil-foreigners – nears, more aspirants are expected to follow suit.

Among the players already eyeing to turn pro next year include UAAP Most Valuable Player Ken Bono, Harbour Centre's JC Intal and Ryan Arana, Marvin Cruz of Toyota Balintawak, Cebuana Lhuillier's Doug Kramer, Henkel Sista's Samigue Eman and Burger King's JR Quinahan.

For applicants to become eligible, one must either be 1) 23 years of age by Draft day, 2) a college graduate or 3) a high school graduate or would have at least graduated from secondary level four years preceding this year's Draft.

Aspirants are also required to submit an NSO (National Statistics Office) birth certificate, diploma in case the player is below 23 years old and 2x2 ID pictures.

For Fil-foreign hopefuls, they must submit a certificate of recognition from the Bureau of Immigration (BI), affirmation from the Department of Justice (DoJ), authenticated birth certificate issued by the NSO if he was born in the Philippines or equivalent official agency in country of birth other than the Philippines.

They should also provide authenticated birth certificate of the player's Filipino parent or other valid and authenticated equivalent document acceptable to the appropriate government agency and the marriage certificate of his parents, or in the absence thereof due to circumstances beyond the applicant's control, Legal Recognition by applicant's Filipino father or other proof evidencing filiation such as a will, record of birth or DNA test results.

Duly notarized and/or authenticated Naturalization papers of Filipino Parent, if applicable, and duly notarized affidavits of at least three (3) persons residing in the Philippines attesting to the claim of citizenship of applicant will also be required from the foreign-bred aspirants.

All Fil-foreign players – and their respective witnesses - will also undergo a personal interview to be conducted by Commissioner Noli Eala at least two weeks prior to the Draft.

Finally, they should have played at least 25 games in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), NCAA, UAAP, National Basketball Conference (NBC), United Regional Basketball League (URBL) and Cebu Basketball Federation (CBF) on the day the league issues the final list of candidates for the Draft.

Ryan Reyes is the bomb..he's the best PG right now not in the PBA..better than Jason Castro, Marvin Cruz, Macky Escalona and Agent Zero Villanueva..too bad he got injured in the last PBL palyoffs. But the guy can play, and at 6'2, he's big for his position, at least in RP standards

NBA??? nahh....

Maybe he can play in the summer league.
But he has lots of potentials, scoring 7pts against DUKE isn't bad after all.

But letting him play in the PBA is waste. Maybe the biggest one in Philippine Basketball history.

theres an old rule for fil-fors in the PBA, you can be directly hired by a team. Thats the case of Danny Seigle, Alex Crisano and other Fil-Fors in PBA. The 25 local games rule outside the PBA is just a new rule for FIl-Fors

Rob Parker of Sta.Lucia and Al Segova of Purefoods.. they were direct hired by those teams thats why they were not been drafted. same with Asi, Danny S, Walkvist, etc.

How about Jonas Villanueva of FEU? and Alex Compton?? Compton should have been playing now after 10 years of staying in the Philippines and being born in the Philippines. he should get his naturalization papers already..

I think Jonas Villanueva will apply for the draft this year as he's used up his eligibility at FEU. THis guy is a pure Pinoy. He was born here and went to San Beda GS before migrating to the US.

For me, it has to be Marvin Lu-Cruz, followed by JR Quiñahan.

Someone informed me that Marvin Lu-Cruz is the best amateur PG for the last five years, plus he's the SEABA 2007 MVP. But his critics unanimously say that he's not ripe enough to turn pro.

Why not give him a chance?

It is not how good a player is in the amateur ranks but which team really needs you. As a PG, PBA Teams already have the following:

Sta. Lucia - Alex Cabagnot, Ronnie Bughao
Red Bull - Topex Robinson, Celino Cruz, Warren Ybanez
Alaska - Mike Cortez, Rensy Bajar, Dale Singson, Willie Miller
Purefoods - Paul Artadi, Roger Yap, Boyet Bautista
Brgy. Ginebra - Jayjay Helterbrand, Johnny A., Egay Echavez
San Miguel - Olsen Racela, L.A. Tenorio
TalkNText - Jimmy Alapag, Felix Belano, Egay Billones
Coca-Cola - Dennis Miranda, Chris Pacana
Air21 - Wynne Arboleda, Aris Dimaunahan, Jimwell Torion
Welcoat - Froilan Baguion, Denver Lopez, Joey Mente

I think all teams are already loaded with PGs. So what they need is a PG/SG in the mold of Willie Miller. At 5-8, Marvin Cruz is too short for SG. As a PG, Cruz can be a reliever for either Air21 (which may get rid of Torion), Brgy. Ginebra (we might qualify for Olympics so Jayjay is out), Coca-cola and San Miguel. Remember Boyet Bautista who was big in the PBL but placed on Purefoods reserve list.

that's why I would love to see a real professional national league for the Philippines...i mean from Luzon to Mindanao...of course don't include Basilan or Sulu...hehehe that would definitely help RP basketball in the nationwide scope...and more teams of course, transfer of technology and players would be more accustomed to a home-and-away scenario...:)

If only the PBA has that kind of scope or have a team of 12 to 15. How about we copy the system of English Premier League Football. Where the team that dominating the PBL can promote and play in the PBA while the bottom dwellers of PBA got demoted or renegated to PBL.

kinda off-topic:

the PBA is planning for expansion, they are targetting a 14 franchise league..they are hoping to add more together with the plan of putting up a PBA Arena. Harbour Central had been planning to penetrate the PBA, they were about to buy the former Shell franchise, but Welcoat got the better part of that deal. btw, there are rumors that the Photokina Franchise (Batang Red Bull) is already "nalulugi", I hope that Yeng Guiao will be a part of the RP NT, after his Red Bull coaching job, if that alleged rumor was true. :D

some comments:

Globe cannot enter the league because there's a exclusivity rule (..more like a gentleman's agreement) in the PBA that only one team should have an exclusive right to market one particular product or service..in this case, Talk N Text, already pimping celfone services,so, Globe, being the main rival of TnT/Smart will not be allowed to have a franchise. Ayala (..the principal owners of Globe) should think of another brand to pimp if they want to enter the PBA, and no, they also cannot use Ayala Land or Glorietta Mall because the realty sector is already taken by Sta.Lucia.

PLDT is owned by the Pangilinan group who also owns Talk and Text

LBC falls under the courier / logistic sector, and is the main rival of Air21..so cannot be din

With his athleticism and attitude, Jason Castro (173-G) is certainly be a big catch in the pro league's annual draft pick next month.

But the prolific Harbour Center guard passed up that rare opportunity yesterday after revealing his decision to play for the national team for one last time.

"Playing in the PBA is everybody's dream but playing for flag and country is something you have to embrace and experience. Walang katulad ang maging member ng national team" said Castro. "I'm still young, so I decided to forego my plan of turning pro this year."

The soft-spoken Pampanga pride is being considered as one of the probable members of the Philippine team that will play, and hopefully restore the country's pride in the SEA Games which is slated in Thailand this December.

Castro, who made a history in the PBL after winning back-to-back MVP titles, just turned 21 last month. He also played a key role in Harbour title-clinching win in the recent Unity Cup.
Castro's decision was warmly welcomed by amateur basketball godfather and Harbour Center owner Mikee Romero.

"I'm glad Jason made that decision, at least we are assured of having one good guy in the team," said Romero. "That is a great sacrifice on his part because most of the big stars in the amateur ranks are all set to join the pro ranks."

Erick Arejola, tasked by Romero to supervise the ongoing tryouts for the RP team, also heaved a big sigh of relief and said: "With Jason around, we're assured of at least one go-to-guy in the team."
Also one reason why he deferred his decision to turn pro is his plan to finish his studies at the Philippine Christian University where he's taking up a business management course.
If given another chance, he also wants to play for the PCU Dolphins next season.

"I still want to play for PCU next year, " said Castro, who played for the Harbour-RP team in the SEABA Club Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia last April.

Meantime, RP team coach Junel Baculi was also overjoyed by Castro's decision to stay in the amateur ranks for at least another year.

"I salute him for doing this patriotic act," said Baculi. "I hope others will follow."

The now-defunct MBA was really an excellent idea to bring pro-ball throughout the archipelago. Too bad most huge companies are concentrated in the PBA. Local-based companies had the burden to shoulder all expenses including plane and boat tickets for their respective teams. This took its toll in most of the MBA teams which eventually led to the end of the MBA. The current NBC League follows the MBA concept but after a few seasons, there is a clear indication of fast turnover of teams participating. Some teams joined the NBC last year then took a leave the following year. If only the PBA Teams relocate to major cities nationwide, then we all can really appreciate. But then again, most major offices of these companies are located in the NCR and the players themselves have settled in the nation's capital.

Bono, Intal lead rookie hopefuls

By Musong R. Castillo
Inquirer
Last updated 05:40am (Mla time) 07/21/2007

MANILA, Philippines—Forty-seven players, including a handful who could turn out to be blue-chip stars, beat the registration deadline for applicants for the Philippine Basketball Association Rookie Draft set next month.

The pool is potentially deep that commissioner Noli Eala yesterday said that the proceedings could go past the usual practice of two rounds.

Former UAAP MVP Ken Bono, a burly big man with soft hands, 6-foot-9 Samigue Eman from Mindanao and Fil-American Joe de Vance lead a cast of frontliners that have declared themselves available for the Aug. 19 proceedings.

Ryan Araña, formerly of La Salle, former Ateneo ace Macky Escalona and ex-Santo Tomas gunslinger Jojo Duncil were the big names registered in the guard spot.

JC Intal, the high-flying, slam-dunking forward out of Ateneo, former college teammate Doug Kramer and JR Quiñahan, nicknamed “Baby Shaq” in the PBL, loom as the brightest forward prospects in the pool.

De Vance, though, was given a conditional acceptance by the PBA pending the release of his Department of Justice confirmation which will legitimize his claim to Filipino lineage.

De Vance, who played for Toyota in the PBL and was a member of the original pool of players coach Chot Reyes wanted for the RP Team two years ago, has been given until the end of the month to complete his citizenship requirements.

Welcoat, which finished last in both conferences this season, will pick first and coach Leo Austria is training his sights on Eman, who played for Henkel-Sista in the PBL.

“There are capable big men and a slew of exceptional wingmen and guards in the list,” Eala said. “That’s why we’re thinking of at least going three rounds.”

The Draft was limited to only two rounds in the last two years even if there was a total of 55 applicants led by eventual rookie of the year and RP Team candidate Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia Realty.

“We’re also looking at other talents, but at this point, we want Eman,” Austria, a former Rookie of the Year himself, said.

Others who could also be picked high in the order are PBL standouts Araña, Ryan Reyes, a Fil-American guard, Duncil and Reed Juntilla, a 6-foot-2 find from Cebu.

An absentee in the list from among the qualified amateurs is Jason Castro, who opted to forego the Draft to play for the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December.
