Cellar dwellers field 2 imports in next Fiesta Cup
From the Philippine Star
Tuesday, July 24, 2007
The Philippine Basketball Association is again applying a handicapping scheme in the import-reinforced tourney next year in a bid to keep balance in the competition.
The last two teams after the elimination round of the All-Filipino tourney will be allowed to field two imports in the Fiesta Conference with one standing 6-foot-1 or below. The rest of the teams will be allowed just an import with no height restriction.
This was approved by the PBA board of governors in a meeting yesterday at Chateu 1771 in Ortigas Center in Pasig.
Remaining in the drawing board is the proposed amendment to the controversial “Restricted Trade List.” The teams couldn’t reach an agreement and decided to make further discussion in their next meeting.
But giants like Julius Nwosu are allowed to be back in the local pro league in the next Fiesta Cup with the board deciding to put away height restriction on imports.
The return of seven-footers could well help PBA players familiarize themselves with international play.
The handicap scheme, meanwhile, opens the door for another stint by Alex Compton with Welcoat, in case the Dragons fail to make it to the top eight in the All-Filipino elims.
Compton played as special import for the Dragons in the recently concluded Fiesta Cup. Injury to Carlos Clark, however, told its toll on the team as the Dragons finished 10th and last in the tourney. –N. Beltran

I hope we get quality 7 footers this time.

A good change. Hopefully this will not be temporary.

kung gs2 tlaga nila ng balance sa league e ibenta na ng SMC yun 2 pang franchise nila, sila ang nagmamanipula ng trade ng players sa liga e. :D
those imports w/ 2 teams against teams with only 1 import and big imports vs. small imports, instead of added attraction for fans, will cause added distractions and will create more imbalances...
translation:
for the PBA to have a balance in human resources, they should start on the locals..not just fielding in reinforcements for the weaker teams.

how do you balance teams in terms of locals? teams can only acquire locals via trade, draft or free agency, right. anyway, lets give the set up a chance. I'm excited to see how the players react to these giants..

before SMC sold the Coca Cola franchise, they made sure to it that those players (Johnny A, Hatfield, Mamaril and Reavis will go Ginebra), and the Enrico Villanueva trade too is very controversial. SMC-owned teams are very competetive right now (Ginebra, Purefoods and San Miguel) leaving other non-SMC teams without reserved bullets. they even managed to bridge the restricted trade list just to get Enrico Villanueva into the backyard of SMB and transfer Rommel Adducul to their own Purefoods team. So what's left for Red Bull? Money and Compensation? the only team other than SMC-owned companies who are really beefed-up right now is the MVP franchise Talk N Text.

Actually Red Bull and Air21 are on the same boat with the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. They all try to save some money but only Air21 doesn't try to stay competitive. Air21 is more like the Los Angeles Clippers of old.

Looks like Alex Compton gets to keep on playing. :)
Although the PBA should pass a board resolution allowing the poor guy to play as a local. He already speaks better Tagalog than most of the Fil-ams anyway.

Sounds like a good idea but pundits say it would create a loophole. Other foreigners would try to do a "Compton" to play in the PBA and to earn big money.

All the board has to do is to make it clear that it's a special dispensation for Compton and for him only.

Incoming PBA chair may tap Europeans
From the Philippine Star
Wednesday, July 25, 2007
Tony Chua of Red Bull, the incoming chairman of the Philippine Basketball Association, is already planning his first move once he assumes the lofty position.
For starters, the amiable team manager, who replaces Ricky Vargas of Talk N Text as chairman on Aug. 16, said he would recommend the fielding of European imports for the next Fiesta Cup.
“I think it’s high time that we try these European imports instead of the traditional Americans,” said Chua yesterday.
Chua, also an officer of the Philippine Football Federation, said Filipinos will probably learn more from the Europeans who are more adept to the international brand of play.
“And since our country is bound to see more action in the international arena, maybe it’s time to tap the Europeans. Let’s not always think of the Americans as our imports,” he said.
“Let’s try learning from the Europeans. And I think it will even cost less for the PBA teams,” said Chua, adding that an American import in the PBA is paid around $14,000 to $20,000 a month by the teams.
“I think we can get quality imports from Europe for a much lower price. And maybe we can get rid of the practice where imports demand a one-month guarantee even if they turn out to be lemons,” he said.
Chua said James Penny, the Red Bull import for the just-concluded Fiesta Cup, went home with around $100,000 despite the fact that the team failed to land in the finals. – Abac Cordero
