I kinda got confused because when I went to Seoul most of the people there were short. I rarely see people there who are above 6'0".

What about Thailand? are they taller than Filipinos or no?

The difference in size between the Korean and Filipino basketball team is pretty large and none of the big Koreans in their front court are naturalized or mixed. South Korea is a only half the population of the Philippines so the Koreans are in general taller.

Thais are lighter in color, taller and Chinese looking in the north. They look exactly like Filipinos in the south since they are mainly malay ethnically there.

If the average person in the RP were anywhere near as tall as people in Taiwan or South Korea, the RP NT should have a lot more tall front court players because it has a much, MUCH larger population.

China's soccer team has the same problem as the basketball team. Dominating height means China uses the aerial game in soccer. That means lobbing in passes from the side and having their much taller forwards head balls on goal.

The Chinese midfield can't dribble for sh1t.

Chinese basketball has good frontcourt (in Asia, this frontcourt is dominant.) But it's guard play sucks.

China's biggest problem is the reliance on height advantage instead of skill. South Korea is far better at training and building skills in both basketball and soccer.

Quite a few of them are over 190cm(6'3'') I went back to the highschool there and everyone was towering over me! I'm 5'11''(180cm) and felt short. On another note. My cousin's only 14 and he's already 183cm (6'0''). If you don't believe me go to the Northern provinces yourself and take a look! Shandong is famous for producing giants.

Thats a good point you made dsong, you've based your statement on experiential account for a specific location and it populus...you did not form general principles between or among different sets of subjects based only on local experience and observations on a national team...

At the end of the day basketball is more than just height, you also need athleticism, tactics, form and luck.....

As I have seen from most of the threads..almost every discussion would always certainly end up with countires slagging off each other...not a good read....

Just enjoy the beautiful game (well this maybe football to some) and analyse it according to performance, form, etc and not according to ethnicity

i took genetics in college, and yes, i can verify that according to population genetics studies, in general, the northern chinese are taller. this has been attributed to the wheat diet of the north as compared to the rice diet to the southern part of china. a more intriguing reason is that the northern provinces borders Russia, Mongolia and middle-eastern provinces which resulted in racial intermixing specially in ancient times either through forced marriages, mass rape(Genghis khan's hordes) or voluntary marriages. in general, racial intermixing whether in plants or animals as well as humans produce whats called hybrids which among others results in taller progeny or kids. I believe the famous chinese guard Adiljan is from the area of china were there are lots of middle-eastern-chinese intermixing ???
many centuries before filipinas started marrying europeans and americans by the thousands, the northern border provinces of china have been practicing this . this holds true as well in europe where many european countries have common borders and racial intermixing was inevitable. another great intermixing occurred when europeans specially the spaniards went in great numbers to south america and united states and mixed with the indians.

man Malays are not black. The Itas are Austronesian. Malays, Pinoys(well what is a pinoy?), Timorese, Indonesians and subjects of Brunei are all Austronesian. As I said in my previous post, and I know you guys don't give a damn on this, but lemme just say it, My wife is half Chinese(and yes she's very lovely) and my kids have both Filipino and Chinese blood in them. yes in general northerners are taller compared to their southern brethren.

That's because they're from different racial stock entirely. The Southern Chinese are the ancestors of the Austronesian people, which includes the Taiwanese aboriginals, the Malaysians, Indonesians, Filipinos, and Polynesians.

I take your opinion as funny statement :p . Basically filipino's average height for male is 5 ft. 4 tall, so its smaller compared to east asian people. Again a 4'11" who love to bully is an understatement because in the philippines, a 4'11" male is bansot (stunt) hehehehe no offense...So i invite u bigfatpandabear to visit your philippine roots and look for your 4-11 filipino if you can find male youth who is bansot ;)) while smaller than you, filipino teenagers are not usually standing 4-11 tall, today's generation height standard usually range from 5-4 and above ....

So while he is an Cal Berkeley engineering major and geeky, he still towers above dudes from the RP so I doubt he was ever bullied by them. LOL

Also very few filipinos at an advance school like Cal, the place is full of Chinese and East Asians. LOL

Everywhere you look in the Philippines, there's a jerry-built basketball game. In farming towns without paved courts, kids dribble on dirt and bank shots off of two-by-fours lashed to coconut trees. On Manila street corners, players who can't afford sneakers run the court in flip-flops or bare feet. The country's professional players, however, play on state-of-the-art courts and wear top-notch apparel. Still, the Philippine Basketball Association is missing something just as fundamental to the game: height.

Basketball is a tall man's game. But in the Philippines, where men are short and hoops is an obsession, something's got to give. Several native "big men" are barely taller than 6 feet 3 inches, the standard height for NBA guards. Dunks are so rare in the PBA that the league has toyed with the idea of making slams worth three points.

The league adds a dash of high-wire athleticism by allowing each team to hire one foreign-born star. But permitting American 7-footers to play would wreak havoc among the Lilliputian locals.
