Not much to add, i guess most of you have heard something about it. Peloponnisos is erased from the map. Death to the firestarters. Was just curious what do you think is behind all that. Firestarters? Property developers? Terrorism?

Btw congrats to the Aggelopoulos brothers for donating 12 mil euro (!!!) to the victims of this tragedy

I think that it is only speculation. The same it happened to us a month ago here in the Canary Islands. I hope you fix the problem. I thing that Spain sent to you two hydroplanes and a few firemen.

And yes i think that all are the same: Firestarters = Terrorism

In Spain they are debating to treat legally Firestarters like terrorism.

Another solution is to prohibit the land construction where that has been burned, with that diminishes the speculation.

I am very sad by you, and by that wonderful country that I knew two years ago.

as far as I understood "set fires" in Greece as well as Sicily and some places are connected with real-estate speculations.

Hello ...

Everyone here in Greece is extremely sad and frustrated with this huge disaster that take place in our country this summer (since June we have had a lot of wildfires...).

A lot of scenarios have been presented in everyday discussions. From an organized plan of the Turks to destroy parts of Greece, to even an extraterrestrial attack! Everyone has an opinion and a scenario about it.

My scenario (did you think I wouldn't have one of my own?) is that some fires started by accident (an old lady cooking in her garden, an accident in a construction site, there are witnesses for these). But the government and the fire department did not manage to handle the first fires that came up. Then the people who wanted to obtain illegally parts of forests to build houses or other reasons saw this impotence of the government and the opportunity to burn areas of their interest and started putting new fires (and a lot of them).

It started from accident but got out of control because of the impotence of the government... (imo of course...)

If you are interested you could find some satellite photos of the areas that were stroke by the fires in the following link:

The same was said in Portugal last year and the previous one, the biggest fire related tragedy in the country's history. It was sad to travel by train and see kilometres of burned land, not because it was in Portugal (I'm not a patriot), but because of the environment. It was a catastrophe. I see the same is happening in Greece this year, it must be something planned or half planned, I classify it as terrorism as well. People who do this things just think about the money they can receive because of such a tragedy, not in the long term environmental effects. They are nothing but criminals.

Greece as a country and judicial entity basically has no ability to look after who owns what land(!). There are very real accusations being pointed towards "land grabbers" who developes deforrested lands and claims them as theirs.

These are loopholes that every modern country should have but for one reason or another the country of Greece has been unable to get a law passed that would if not stop so atleast seriously diminish property developers lust for using the "scorched earth tactic".

I totally agree with you :) , in some situations, there are no more ethnics fights, just pains and sadness for other humans who suffered, in Greece now, in Turkey few years ago...that's all.

How about the fires in Spain? Are they of the same nature (e.g., real estate speculators)?

I do pray that this blows over soon, and that the rains that have been falling on Britain decide to go over to the Mediterranean and put out the fires.

Greece doesn't have a national cadastre. 10 000 people can go tomorrow and claim the land which was left after the forest was burnt down. Pretty obvious where this leads to.

A couple of months ago Greek government passed new laws which allowed some forests turn into building zones... a coincidence?

In June's fire near Athens half of fire department was disabled because they were on stand-by to protect the casino built in the forest which was on fire, the result... half of forest gone, casino still making millions. And on top the government gave away additional 90 000 000 square metres of Mont Parnai to the casino...

Terrorists' actions aim at terrorising people, in this case the motives were obviously economical, although the majority of the fires were caused by plain idiots by accident.

While anyone can walk to any bank and with his ID can get 10 000 Euros compensation claiming his house was damaged during the fires... gypsies from all over Greece are queing to get the cash as they say and i quote 'The government is handing out cash, we are just taking it'...

And last but not least, the asymmetric moron poet Byron ManyGifts, Greek 'public order' minister who has lost the 'eggs and the easter cake'... may he never publishes another of his (idiotic anyway) poems...

I'm actually surprised that none of the Greek (asshole) politics didn't think of creating a 'Green Party' (ecological), and cash in at the elections.

At least there is one positive... elections are in two weeks time, everyone will get what they deserve... so to all my fellow (brainless, including me) Greeks... GIVE THEM WHAT THEY DESERVE... ENA PALLOUKI STON KOLO!

The compensation that any citizen can receive with a simple declaration is €3000 but it makes no difference, the situation is how Arkadios described it.It was reported that someone who lives permanently in Zefyri(northern Attika, area that hosts many gypsies, so was the person in my story) tried 2 receive the €3000 compensation just by signing that he lives in the areas that were burnt and his property was destroyed!Of course the same thing happened with many others that weren't exposed. On top of that, all TV stations r hosting every evening panels with politicians discussing about the elections and polls about what the people r gonna vote! The government declared that the burnt propertied will b rebuilt by state expenses(which probably means increased taxes from next year). However, the 2 biggest banks in Greece have donated €110Μ combined, Aggelopoulos family(vice-president of Olympiacos) €12Μ, other banks amounts of €2-5Μ each and every day another company adds its name 2 the list of donations.Still the politicians claim that the state will rebuild the burnt houses...
As 4 the mad poet Byron, I honestly believe that the man has lost his mind a long time ago. It's not irony or exaggeration;I have serious doubts over his mental state of mind...
