The much awaited game!
Russia back to a final after many years in the shade and Spain proving their power which has been going on since last year's WC.
Spain an expected finalist, Russia not at all.
Let the discussion and the voting begin! ;)

Well Russia should have a rest day to prepare such a game.Let see what blatt can do....

....jesus christ ..i wont sleep tonight..i can taste the gold already.Good luck Russia.
I voted for Spain, but my heart is with Russia in this one. If they can repeat the defensive end of the game as they did vs. Lithuania and maybe even better offense they can surprise Spain infront of their fans.
It's clearly almost impossible in my opinion, but that's basketball, just remember how Slovenia lost to Germany and Greece. Impossible becomes all of the sudden possible. :D

During the last 2 years ive heard that "that Spain is no unbeatable " millions times but apart from Marko Tomas fluke the real deal is that no body beat us .
I dont think that any team in the world is unbeatable ...but spain have been heading that way for a long time now.
And i dont think tomorrow will be any different ..even if i think that russian is the best team after spain at this eurobasket .
I did not expect such good words about Russia. I am surprised.well...thanx.

Interesting game: Spain played today with five men (and they could do that...), will they be tired? Russia too hadn't an easy life in the semi... anyway, I don't think that Greg Louganis, Klaus Dibiasi, Gao Min, Dmitri Sautin and Filippo Inzaghi (Spain's starting five) will lose this gold medal.

Moral justice should be brought after Spain's scandalous win against Greece, with players-actors diving on the floors creating fake-fouls, Spanish players cry-babies throwing temper-tantrums to the referees, shoving the greeks, when Greece was ahead in the score, and in their panic those actor-Divas forgot all about fair play and good sportsmanship, shame on those Diva and arrogant players who hate loosing with dignity.
Moral justice should be brought to againts those inept referees who wanted to please the home team and the spanish cheering crowds, by whistleling faux fouls againsts the Greek team. Everything on the game was a scandal, only the Greek teams superb performance inspight of all the negative forces against it, gave the game prestige. Those faux-fouls by the referres costed Greece the place in the Final.
Good news for the Spanish players is that they might consider being hired for Aldomovar next film, great actors;) Go Russia:)

Well, let's be fair.....Spanish has a great and balanced team, they play at home....Even if Spanish will play their worst game in a century, for russians it would be almost impossible to get this victory....they wouldn't be allowed and we would see some scenes that could compete for Oscar award. okey, i am not serious here.
Russians already implemented their goals 150 % and they should be proud whatever result is tomorrow.

This game is giving the chance to Kirilenko to win a title he really deserves and
become an even greater icon than he already is. The chances of Russia to beat Spain are pretty slim but since it became clear that the biggest advantage for the furias rojas against their major rival (wounded Greece) is the homecourt (as opposed to their supposed extraterrestrial skills), nothing is impossible.
Of course, needless to say that if Kirilenko commits his 3rd foul within the first quarter, go ahead and turn your tv off....
Ps. I hope everyone noticed that the 2-3 Spanish posters who appeared lately in this forum are the definition of a sad gloryseeker (Genjuro is of course excluded). Therefore their posts should be ignored for the sake of the boards.

bad statistic: RUSSIA didn`t win matches in home of their opponents...in friendly games and in championship(lietuva, latvia, france, germany, spain). ..all games on neutral court we won...
so........

My take on the Greek’s absurdity is they live in their own bubble, a situation probably caused by hyperprotection from their media, or most likely, because their journalists are fanatics too. And as a result, they actually believe in their own excuses. They really think they were humilliated in the WC final because they underestimated Spain, they really think they were crushed in the first round because the tournament hasn’t started for them yet and they really think they lost today because Calderon exaggerated a foul somewhere the third quarter.
But the fact is, that if the refs had wistled half the fouls the Greeks were committing in every Spanish attack, they would have been crushed in the usual way.

Congragulations on making a useless post. Im not greek, but your post is bull, plain and simple... Using big words doesnt make you smart here, in fact it shows your pathetic attempt to disguise poorly constructed arguments. This truly shows your limited knowledge of what has happened. You forget such minor details like Rudy's acting in the game with the greeks, the ref help for the Spaniards, and most importantly the fact that greece had 16 hours of rest before the game. How much did spain have? 1-2 days ? Fair right ? Greeks played passionately and strong, just remember the game vs Slovenia. And today even while being the underdogs, they DID have a chance to win the game. Just amazing defense by greece.
EDIT: some bastard edited my post and removed the carefully prepared offensive sentences i had written in. thanks for nothing schmucks.

Russia is the most underestimated team in the tournament. well coached and stable (complete oposite of LIthuania, btw). indeed the local press forgot this is Eurobasket they're commentating, they forgot how Lithuania collapsed in the crucial stages in the Olympics and in the Worlds. they forgot we have a new coach (and look at his assistants....). but the bigest thing they forgot is to give credit to the Russians, who were relaxed and dominated the unrecognisible LTU.
anyways, if Spain plays as they could, - easy win. but if they stumble psychologically, Russians could take it. in any case nobody should take tha fact that we lost to Russia as a prove that Russia could beat Spain. Lithiuania sucked big time in the begining of the match (actually, in the end as well) and however good were the Russians, they most certainly are not better than in-form Spain. overall I think in-form Lithuania would be the toughest opponent for the Spanish, but for that the game should have been played a weak ago, right now Russia is indeed the best team apart from Spain.

I'll add one too :)
here's quote from the FIBA post-game report (Russia's win yesterday):
"For the first time since 1993 Russia is in the EuroBasket finals, and will get a shot to win the title for the first time since 1985, back when it was still known as the USSR."
on the one hand we too consider Russia dirrectly responsible fro the crimes of USSR (which they don't admit). on the other hand, not many citizens of the Russian Federation were on that team (2 or 3 if i'm not mistaken as there were Lithuanians (4), Latvian, Estonian, a bunch of Ukranians, etc.). in this regard such sentence could be treated a direct insult to all those proud states that were occupied by the USSR.

Good luck to Russia, I hope your coach takes your players to some diving pool for today's final training. Trust me, it will be needed.
Hopefully though you will have the refs on your side against the spanish divers, because as everybody knows the refs will once again play 70-30% against spain. Oh, the little buggers...
PS : Good luck to the spanish divers too, I hope all of your actors are in top shape and have read well the game script. Especially al pachino... err excuse me, garbajosa.

Calderon may be twice as good as Saras is(was in europe), but the crowd will never love him as much as loved Saras. He acts a scene, then with seriuos and arrogantic face puts his hands in the air and not even looking at fans, and never smiles them. maybe he feels uncomfortable coz hes not playing but acting? don't want to flame it further although my words mostlikely will, but if you guys check some older threads, you will find out there are many people complaining about spanish acting and unproportional referee protests at all costs from the very begining of this championship and it has little to do with their nationality or results of their NT vs. Spain.
The fact greeks became that loud is just that majority of them haven't watch spanish games before or weren't that interested in it.

Ditto. I hate to see the team so full of talent wasting their time on court in amateur drama antics and dirty playing. It reminds me of Italian squadra azzura - how it is possible to have in one team players like Cannavaro, Nesta and others, who don't give up an inch against any opponent, no matter how strong, and tactics of diving, complaining, whining?
And before you will start saying that it is a matter of sour grapes, I would say that I never condone such behaviour among our own players. Lot's of our national team problems is because of too much time spent arguing with referees as opposed to standing up and playing.
But Garbajosa and Fernandez took the dark side of basketball game to another level altogether. Therefore, you're the strongest squad in Europe, there's no doubt about it. But you suck big time. It's not just "suck". It's a huge 40-storeys skyscraper with neon signs all over the night sky "YOU SUCK" :p

Some greek fans already not accepting our fair win and complaining. This situation is as normal as pathethic. You are all loosers and you have to accept this soon or later.
Statements like that, once again show what you are made of, and I am talking specifically for you, not for all spanish fans.
As I have already said in these forums, I watched the game with 4 friends of mine, all of them spaniards (3 guys and a girl). They saw the game, they saw the diving, they were ashamed of it.
Of course the game was great, and I agree both teams played good. It may or may have not ended up in the same result without the comedy and the diving.
I am not angry so much for loosing it in such a way, but mostly because it was an incredible fight, and the spaniards tried to turn it into a parody. They ruined a great game.
Never before have I seen players falling like that, ANYONE who has played basketball understands exactly what was going on. Many of us me including were cheering spaniards when we lost to them in 2006.
Yesterday was different, and it was ridiculus. Go on and insult us as much as you like, I won't fall down to your level and start calling the fans loosers and such words that you like to use so much.
Facts are facts though.
On one hand we have an example from the greek team, Papaloukas, congratulating a three pointer that sent us to the extra team in the game vs serbia, and on the other hand we have an example of a spanish player, Garbajosa, falling ridiculusly and holding his head (!!!) when the light contact that was made was made shoulder to shoulder!
Again, look at the video, and tell me.
How can a shoulder to shoulder contact, lead to a player HOLDING IN TERRIBLE PAIN HIS FCKN HEAD ?
Ridiculus.

There were one actor(obviously Calderon diving), and a lot of fighters. Yesterday I counted 4 or 5 fouls that the referees didn't gave to the spanish, more specifically performed by Dikoudis and Tsarsaris. And 1 technical foul missing. And the invented technical foul to Rudy Fernández (What was that? Did you see that?). From my point of view the referees made a lot of mistakes ON BOTH SIDES. OMG stop cryng, there are some loosers fans here.

P.S.: Stop sayin that the ref help Spain. Moust of you said it after each spanish game. I think they deserve a little respect.

If we were loosers my spanish friends, we would act like that all the time, I am again saying to you we lost before to spain, a great team.
Why should I or any greek fan cry or not accept that ? I do not consider it a shame.
Yesterday was not that case, no matter how many times you call names at us, in the same way your players did.
Examples ? Did you see the foul that was whistled on spanoulis on a spanish turn-over ? He WAS STANDING STILL BEHIND THE SPANISH PLAYER, HANDS FOLDED! And your bench was yelling for a FCKN technical !!!!
You should also note that there is a rule in basketball that says a player can get a technical foul if he acts. Yes, there actually is a rule like that, go get some ref book and read it. Thats why you got that technical. You should ve got a lot more.
And one last question, AGAIN, untill someone answers :
HOW CAN A SIMPLE SHOULDER TO SHOULDER CONTACT, like the ones that are happening all the time in basketball, lead to Garbajosa fallin on the floor HOLDING HIS HEAD IN TERRIBLE PAIN ?

Ridiculus.
You don't understand, I assume Calderon was diving. But don't you think you are overstepping the mark insulting calling the spanish ridicoulus, divas ,etc?
And it is a lie that you lost? Rethink, I'm not insulting nobody.

About the game. It wasn't a surprise Russia's victory. Lithuania it's probably a better team, but in this tournament went from better to worse due Jasikevicius injury. Russia was in the opposite direction, and Holden is doing an excellent tournament. He knows what their team needs at every moment, and they deserve playing the final.
They are obviously not the favourite, which we'll let them playing with less pressure. I really think Spain is a better team, but I see they have nothing to lose and a lot to win. I don't have good feelings about today's game, and believe Russia has lots of chances to win. Anyway, I'll hope we'll watch a very good basketball game.

Actually read it one more time carefully, I've said this applies to everyone included and your post can btw. easily be missunderstood.
I don't care for anyones resentment towards Greece-Spain game and from now on posts indicating those stuff will be deleted and I am sure noone wants to give me a reason for banning him from the thread, before the game and discussion even begins... and again repeating myself: this aplies to everyone here, not mentioning any individuals, but especially to some new members that arent yet used to IBN rules and policy.
edit: I've actually moved some OT post, from now on any post applying to Greece/Spain game in this thread will be deleted, members posting that in this thread gets one warning before getting banned from the thread, and if continuing I am sure banning from the forum follows up.

What I really hope tonight is 2 c another great match like most of the ones we saw in the past 2 days.We have 2 of the biggest teams not only in Europe, but in the world. They can offer a big matchup, as long as it's not ruined by external factors. The key players won't b Gasol and Kirilenko imo, they r expected 2 shine. The result could b determined by complementary players who will have a big game and by the contribution of stars(but non-first-options) like Navarro and Khryapa.I just hope we won't c Kirilenko having 2 fouls in 3 minutes again...

If we leave the refs and the morals aside I think that Russia today has a chance only if AK pulls a performance similar to yesterday's. This however is an unlikely feat. The spaniards will take today's game in a much more focused manner due to the hard semi they had (if the had walked over Greece in the semi they may had arrived more carelessly in the final). I expect a +10 win for Spain. I just hope that there would be no theatrics today from either team and that we see a great game, worthy of a Eurobasket final.
PS: Is it true that one of the refs will be greek? :D

Somehow I have a premonition that a game will be decided not by the major aces in each time. And, looking objectively, I see more candidates to contribute in the Spanish team. We'll see. It will be probably the first time I will root for Russia. And it is not my problems with some ESP players attitudes that helped to balance our traditional animosity towards Russian NT. It's just that I cannot help but love the way they play, utilizing every slightest advantage and masking every slightest shortcoming.

I don't think anyone complained about the previous two matches. Not a single word.
Anyway, this is the final's thread. Another thing I am wondering about is why did FIBA let the QFs (well, some of them), SFs and finals to take place in consecutive days. That brings the quality of the game down. Were time limits that much of an issue?

When people see something not right, when they have nothing to gain from this, they protest against this.
And somebody can say Greeks are chearing for the Russians because they lost yesterday. But what about the Lithuanians?

Neverminding all the political stuff, lithuanians and russians have a lot in common. we know the language, we know the culture. moreover the incident with spanish police and lithuanian flag didn't improve the spanish image in the eye of a regular lithuanian fan.

It's a fantastic feeling in what has been the best Eurobasket I have ever watched (I have watched 11 so far). A-bloody-masing!!!
Russia beat Spain, Lithuania and Greece.
Navarro was nowhere. 7/35 2pt-fg. Horrible (like CSKA's 11/28 fts 2 years ago against Tau in Euroleague semi-final)!!!
Russian defense has been amazing, dominant, brilliant. Congrats to Blatt, who finally took advantage of the 2003 generation talent. AK has been a fair and square MVP. Excellent moment for both of them in a really crucial summer. Khryapa was also amazing. Holden was key. I will respect him more after this HUGE shot. Ponkrashov was really big, stepping up in such a huge game. He is their next key guy, along with Aleksey Shved, for future tournaments. Savrasenko, also in an excellent game, his last international one. They will be needing more bigs like him (or even better ;)) in the future tournaments.
And, as much as I am disappointed for Greece's fair and square loss to Lithuania and the fact that they will be playing in the pre-Olympic tournament, I will have to respect the fact that after 2002 and the game between Yugoslavia and Argentina, we finally had the chance to watch a big derby in an International final...
Good luck next year in China... To all European teams. They will be even more motivated.

Yes, I know French weren't good this year, but they were anyway one of the 4 main favorites before the beginnning of the tournament. And it is interesting to notice that Russians won the championship beating all of the 4 main favorites (Greece in first round, France in quarter-final, Lithuania in semi-final and Spain in final).

That sounds more logical to me. Afterall now he has extra motivation to do that.

They both are americans. Yesterday Blatt after the semifinal game talked about his feelings, and he described himself as a "modest guy from Massachusetts"

Simply it's hard for me to honestly call them the best team in Europe, because it's not.
No "lucky", because it sports and not gambling! Russian NT is the Champions and the best team in Eurobasket today. They won your team and Spain in fair game so they deserve the title!

man, did we play bad today! Not the best day to start doing so, jeje. But hey, there is an Eurobasket almost every year so we will surely have another chance some day. :D
Spain defeats Russia at the volleyball european championship final in Moscow, Russia beats Spain in the Eurobasket in Madrid... Strange things happen!

Yes, the one who win the gold is the best, don't look for strange things.

Indeed. Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, Lithuania, Russia, Spain, France. Any one of these teams could have won it.
I agree, but it's not the first year it's the case.
Imho, we have 7 or 8 teams that could win the EC since 2003, and we'll have probably more in 2009 (Turkey ? Italy ? Serbia come back ?)

What is clair is that is more difficult to win an EC than an WC.
