The guy Garth josept is a giant ! Yes. He is bigger and stronger than Shaq. Unfortunately, his conditioning is (I've read) weak. He has trouble running up and down the court. But I'm sure he's a defensive dynamo with some good moves around the basket.

Mohsena, a lot of us have been waiting several years for someone from Iran to join this board and tell us what's happening in the league. We're going to expect frequent news and opinions from you! :D

The Super League attracts some great international talent. I think Iranian scouts must be pretty good. They've got players like John Carter, Lorenzo Hall, Champville's Tony Madison and Slovenian national team member Jurkovic.

When you take those good imports and mix them with some of the strong youngsters who are in Iran right now, you get a very exciting league (not to mention a solid national team with no foreigners). I think Iran is doing a good job of slowly integrating their basketball teams and players into the rest of the world. I hope it continues.

Anyhow, we expect regular updates, Mohsena!

Do you know what was the case with Jurkovic to leave Iran?

Kaveh deported him !

Iranian clubs can only have 2 foreigners and Jurkovic isnot good enough for kaveh to beat saba battery and mahram. after him kaveh sign with 2 us players (Mike Jones and Omar Sharif Smith). and they both play much better than Jurkovic.
tonight kaveh was very close to beat saba but Haddadi saved asian champion in last 2 seconds by his block.

How is canceled ? Is it possible a league game got canceled ?
sorry, my fault! postponed, not cancelled

due to heavy snow (heaviest snow i ever seen) , all today's flights cancelled and Pardis could not travel to Babol. and if they cannot go to Babol tomorrow, then this match postponed.

-------------------------

Some of the heaviest snowfalls in years caused severe transport disruptions in Iran today, forcing the cancellation of most flights and the closure of many roads.
All international and domestic flights to and from Tehran were cancelled and some cities in northern Iran saw their first snow in 20 years. many roads to and from Tehran were also closed.
All international flights to and from Imam Khomeini International Airport have been cancelled. Flights at 15 other airports were also cancelled.
schools and universities in Tehran and some other cities would stay closed today and tommorow. also all government offices would be shut today and tomorrow.

The snow there looks crazy..I was looking at the news. When a region doesn't have snow frequently, it can be very bad. My brother told me that when it snowed just two inches in North Carolina, people were abandoning their cars on the side of the road.

Obviously, it looked much worse in Iran. I hope this doesn't delay the league for more than a day or so. Hopefully, by this evening, the teams will have played all their games.

So what are your predictions regarding the team(s) with most possibilites to win the Super League?

no doubt, Mahram and Saba are favorites to win the title, both have Iran NT players and 2 good foreigners. (Long and Madison for Mahram, Dioumassi and Garth Joseph for Saba)

Zob Ahan and Kaveh have good team also. Zob Ahan is youngest team in superleague, they have a smart coach and players from Iran Junior NT with Iran NT players like Sahakian and Jaber Rouzbahani. but their imports are not good enough.

and I think Babol's team (Beem) can surprise others, Beem have strong roster with Iran NT captain Pooya Tajik and our first guard Iman Zandi, they both missed FIBA Asia 2007 due to injuries. Babol's people are basketball crazy and support their team a lot. they can beat all asian clubs at home but for championship they must win Saba and Mahram in Tehran. i think they cannot !

my predictions:

Mahram 45%
Saba 35%
Zob Ahan 10%
Kaveh 5%
Beem 5%
no chance for others !

right
in Iran, Basketball is not popular like football, futsal, wrestling (olympic style), weightlifting and volleyball.

and about football, no doubt, football is important part of iranians life.

Hopefully the situation will change now that the NT is having great success and the clubs are playing so well internationally. Iranians should be very proud of their athletes, especially their basketball team. Of course, we have a personal agenda on this forum (promoting basketball), so I'd rather see Iranians enjoying basketball rather than wrestling!

Yes, that website is not very good right now. Of course we want to see statistics, pictures, and box-scores. It would go a long way toward making internationals like me aware of the Super League. It's easy to find information about other countries: all of Europe, Lebanon, Argentina, China, etc. But if you want to know about Iranian players, you have to go through the FIBA website, IBN, and what they have at Eurobasket.com. It's a shame.

Back to the Play-Offs: I'm not sure what the system is like in the SL. It looks like Mahram is the favorite. The globetrotting Tony Madison is on fire this year. But Sabba is obviously strong. I'll pick them to win the Play-Offs in a series. Why? Two reasons: 1) experience counts for everything in any play-off tournament, and 2) they've got the two-headed monster that is Garth and Ehadi.

Why did they do that? As the results show they could have passed to the next round.

logically, they could not.
they won first match in Sirjan (Gol Gohar's home) in overtime with help of referees !!!!!
and for second match, federation forced Petrochimi to play in Tehran (Petro's home is Mahshahr) and suspended two imports and coach of petrochimi. but after all Petochimi without foreigners , coach and supporters crached Gol Gohar by big margin.
and for third match (in Mahshahr), logically Golgohar can not beat Petrochimi with imports and supporters.

Petrochimi is a strong team, they played in 05/06 and 06/07 finals (and lost both finals to Saba). but they must try, withdrawal is not acceptable.

I' ve heard that American player Torraye Braggs is playing for Petrochimi. I'd like to know if that's true. And also I'd like to see his statistics.

For me it seems that now in Iran is playoff time, so soon season should end. Right?

Hey Mohsena2631,... I was wondering if you could give your opinion.

Do you think the 2009 FIBA Asia Champs might extend from 16 to 24 participating teams?

Who do you think is going to host the next Asian Champs?

hi
i think 16 is better! we have only 25 (more or less) active countries in asia. Only 17 teams participated at asian games.

and who is the host ?
Iran: absolutely NO, maybe 2011
Lebanon: Of course they want it. But they cannot.
Kazakhstan, Syria and Jordan: NO, they cannot
China and Japan: NO (i wish)
Korea and Philippines: maybe (if they want)
Qatar: NO, they closed their basketball book after Asian Games

but i think the host will be a weak team in asia, maybe Malaysia, Indonesia, Kuwait or Bahrain.

Yeah, I agree. The only thing I want them to change is the elimination format. You see in the Eurobasket, 16 teams are placed into 4 groups which makes it identical to the Asian Champs; however, the main difference is that, in the Eurobasket, the top three teams in the group qualify whileas the top two teams qualify in the Asian Champs. The top three teams in each group are placed into two separate groups where the 4 top teams advance to the quarterfinal knockout stage.

In addition to that, all teams participating play everyday only during the preliminary rounds. When it comes to the next round, they play but not everyday.

I think the Eurobasket tournament format is more favourable since its fairer. Unlike the Asian Champs where you barely have a rest day. It's no wonder many teams during the Eurobasket where able to get better unlike the teams in the Asian Champs where they were given ample time to improve.

What's your say guys?

....but they must try, withdrawal is not acceptable. I agree with you 200%, Mohensa. At least try. I've played in pick-up games where the competition was going to kill us, but I at least made an attempt.

To quit is to act like a spoiled child, like the NBA players who sign maximum contracts, then stop playing and demand to be traded. They're babies who shouldn't start what they can't finish. Shame on Gol Gohar.

Pardis is finished!? Wow, I thought Smith could dominate, but I was wrong.

Looks like Mahram and Sabba are still the favorites.

quarters: (32-15, 23-15, 22-17, 18-32)
good try for young team from Shahrekord. they played very well in last quarter, their guard Alexander Pashkov (Belarus) played like a great player. especially his unbelievable alley-oop pass to Reza Jamshidi. for Kaveh , the best player was Amir Amini.

Mohsena,i noticed that 2 teams withdrew during the playoffs, what is the problem ?? Usually the teams who are not performing well, used to withdrew after some games in the regular season.
This kind of steps might be very effective, dangerous and might kill the activity of the teams,it was happening a lot in Lebanon few years ago.

you are right

they withdrew for 1 match , because they had not any chance against opponents, Gorgan will be played for 5th-8th places. also Azad and Gol Gohar will be played for 9th-12th places.
their problem is money !! they havenot good sponsors like Saba, Mahram, Kaveh, Pardis, Zob Ahan, Beem, Petrochimi and even Ararat. they are multisport clubs and sometimes they sacrifice one for others.

but , for me as a fan, it is treachery.

Oh that's bad,but i think these problems shouldn't happen anymore specially that you have A Superleague which mean a professional league,if some teams are not capable to get money so they shouldn't play from the beginning

of course that is bad, but they played 22 matches in regular season and i'm sure they have enough money to play 1 match more !
i think , main problem is rules of Iran's federation. if a team do not play in a match, they only lose 20-0, no more , no suspension. and it is a good rule for stingy managers.

USA/IRI - A basket full of surprises for an American player in Iran

http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/news/inte/p/langid/1/newsid/23433/arti.html

TEHERAN (Iranian Basketball League) - Mike Jones is an American basketball player in the Iranian basketball league. He has been playing professional basketball for 9 years, most of it outside his home country. In the four years he played in France, two were spent in the first division. This is his first season in Iran, a country whose people and culture have given him a shock to kick start his games from a sure point.

Why did you choose to come to Iran?

Well, I got a number of offers from France and Turkey. And the one from Iran was the best, so I decided to come here.

What was your perception of Iranian basketball then?

I knew there was a pretty good league. I know Gabe Mouneke, one of the guys who played here last season with Saba Battery. He told me a lot of good things about Iran and I just wanted to try something different. But I did not know what to expect. And I am happy to be here now.

How do you compare the league in Iran with others you've already played in?

The league in Iran is pretty good but not as good as the ones in Europe, yet. However, looking into the future, I believe it's going to be pretty good and I am glad I'm a part of it now.

How was your idea about the country itself?

I was a little bit nervous at first, but once I got here I realized that the people were very friendly, totally different from the picture I had from the news. I have made a lot of friends and I think I'd really like to stay and play here for a few years.

Now that you are here in the country, has the initial image you had of Iran changed in any way?

Yes, when I arrived I did not think the people were going to be this friendly. The image you get in the media in the United States is angry and mad people, but it's nothing like that once you get here, so it was a pleasant surprise.

What about your social life over here, do you find it limited in any way?

Yes, social life is limited for me, over here. But I am occupied with my job. For example in a country like Turkey you can go to a club or a bar, but here you can't. Here, you ought to focus on basketball and actually, that does make the players better.

So, how do you fill in your spare time in Iran?

Reading books and surfing the internet ten hours a day instead of two.

What about sight seeing? Have you been able to travel around the country?

Not really. We went to Isfahan and it was very nice, but I haven't had more time for sight-seeing.

Have you found any similarities between the Iranian and American cultures?

Just that everybody likes to have fun and have a good time, in both countries. I can't think of anything else in common right now.

Has anything ever shocked you here?

Yes, eating Kebabs everyday and the way people drive over here. That is crazy. I drove in Turkey and I thought if I could drive in Turkey, I could drive anywhere in the world, but I won't ever drive here.

Can you tell us a bit about Turkey and your time there playing basketball?

The Turkish basketball league is very good and real physical. I think that in Iran they let you play physical too. But the league in Turkey is a bit better right now.

What is your view about Iranian basketball now that you are a part of it?

It's good now but in 3 or 4 years it is going to be a much better and stronger league. There are a lot of foreign players here, and there are also good Iranian players. The Iranian league is now one of the big powers in Asia would be even more secured in future.

And what about the weak-points?

The weak-points are with the gyms here. A couple of them are good but other gyms are bad. In some of the gyms we play on a concrete floor and this is bad for the knees. I think if there'd be better gyms, the league could become much better.

What about the Iranian spectators who come to watch the matches?

I think they love basketball. Like in BEEM, the spectators are very good. We have good spectators at our gym too. They just love basketball and they like to see good games.

Have you ever had the chance to talk to them?

Yes, after the games they always want to shake hands. I have taken a couple of pictures with them too.

How has the Iranian basketball or playing here been a challenge for you?

It's been a challenge because Omar and I have been living in this hotel for like three months. You need your own apartment to go back to after a game and relax. Living in a hotel is kind of difficult for us.

But almost all clubs provide their players with apartments?

Most clubs do, but ours hasn't.

Did you ever ask for an explanation?

Yes, we pointed out that it was stated in our contracts, but for a reason that we do not know of, we are put in a hotel which has been kind of hard to deal with. The other things are OK.

Have you ever had any problem over the payments?

No. But, the hardest thing for us is sending the money home, because from Iran you can't send money to the U.S. directly and it often takes a week or even longer. If transactions were faster, it would make us feel a lot better.

Did you encounter any obstacles while communicating with your coach or team-mates?

No. The coach speaks good English. Our trainer Ali and most of the guys on the team speak English and can understand you if you speak slowly. However, I have been trying to learn Farsi and it's a very difficult language to learn. My team-mates have been really nice and they have been trying to teach me Farsi. Now, I can say hello, I am feeling well and how are you in Farsi.

Is there anything special you might have learnt from Iranian culture?

I think the people are pretty honest for the most part; just nice people. In America you've got to know a person for a bit of time before he becomes nice to you, but here the people just want to be nice, right away.

Do you think you would come back again to Iran if you receive a good offer?

If I am offered a nice contract, I'll definitely come back.

When you return to the U.S. how may your experience here change your life over there?

When I speak to my parents, they always ask me if everything is OK and safe here. But when I go back I will tell them that things are not like what you hear or see on the news. So I think, one thing I would say to the people when I go back home is that the people in Iran are very nice and nothing like what they make of them on the news.

Well, what do you predict for Iran's national Basketball team after it qualified for the Olympic Games?

I think it's very good that Iran has qualified. Two of the players in the Olympics team are from my own team, Kaveh. They are very good players. Iran has got a lot of good players, so once the basketball IQ improves the league will get a lot better.

Do you think that sports bring countries with conflicts together? Can we have dialogue through sports?

That's just like a safe haven. With sports different people can have fun and not worry about the issues that create a gap between them. I think people will have a different idea of the Iranians once they see them in the Olympics and see that they are just like everyone else in the world.

Thank you Mike and hope you enjoy your time here for the rest of the season.

Thank you.

Mike Jones is playing in Iran? Wow. When did this happen? He's a really good player. I don't remember, but I think he was drafted in the NBA in 2006.

I just love to see these kinds of interviews. I think that when great players say these nice things about a country, it really brings the two countries closer, whether the US or Iran officially want that or not. It's a lot like the old Ping Pong Diplomacy between China and the US. Jones lets Americans know what Iran is really like, and Iranians get to meet a smart, open-minded young American.

By the way, Jones is totally correct when criticizes the floors ("In some of the gyms we play on a concrete floor and this is bad for the knees. I think if there'd be better gyms, the league could become much better."). I saw first hand in Costa Rica very good players who play on polished concrete. It's terrible on the knees and hips. Nice wood floors help players jump and keep their legs in better shape.

Salam Malas1 :)

Jabari Smith played for Pardis Qazvin (5th in regular season and 10th in final ranking). and the league was finished for him. but this season was not good for Jabari. and Pardis's coach is not satisfied with him. especially his second match in first round of playoffs.

and about stats , i am sorry, we have not !

Yes, Lebanon played good against one of favorites. they surprised Iran, especially in first half. and at last Iranian fans cheered for Lebanon due to their good try.

it is good to see an asian championship in Iran but this tournamet put our basketball superleague in shadow !

Well i'm happy that Lebanon Handball NT is playing in the asian championship specially that Israel destroyed our biggest court "Hatem Achour stadium" from 2 years and good that we back and this game is not over.I thought that no more handball in Lebanon
About the iranian league,i think they should organize the programs of the games with the channel, its pitty that a Semi final game is not broadcasted,it will kill the enthusiasm of the league. The sponsers will not be happy, the foundations who are participating in the budget of the teams also will not accept this.

Dribbling from Desert Sands to the Cotton Fields of Gorgan

Anwar Coleman jump started a contract in Iran. Last season he was playing in Saudi Arabia. The warmth of the Middle East has kept him in the region. He just ended his season a few days ago in the greens of northern Iran, playing for Gorgan's municipality team.

How did you first hear about Iranian basketball?

I have known about Iranian basketball for a few years, but I never thought I would end up here. A friend of mine told me about the league when I was on a tour in Chile. I started to pay closer attention to it this summer after they won the FIBA Asian games.

So, is this your first experience of Asian basketball?

No, I actually played in Saudi Arabia last season.

What brought you over to Iran, then?

I decided to come to Iran because I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to play in a good league and earn good money. I figured this must be one of the best leagues in Asia this year, because of their performance last summer.

What other options did you have in the Middle East?

Well, I could have stayed in Saudi Arabia to play in Mecca or to move to a team in Qatar. But I thought if I was going to play in this region, it should be in the best league.

What was your idea of Iran before you came over?

I didn't know much about the actual country. When I started to do research, I started to hear about how the relationship between Iran and the USA was not good. Also, a lot of people think Iran is a war zone but I haven't even seen a fist fight here.

How do you spend your free time here?

I am a friendly person and I like to be with people but there are no social clubs or social settings where people can interact. Plus there are not many things to do for fun here besides watching TV.

How can sports close gaps between countries?

History has shown that most people can be brought together through common interests. I think that sports can definitely bring countries with conflict together. Most people would rather love than hate. Most conflicts are between governments and it trickles down through its people. A country, no matter how big or small, is nothing without its people. So if you can bring the people together through the love of sports, you can bring countries together for the sake of its people.

Is it true that due to the ongoing US sanctions against Iran, it is illegal for the Americans to play basketball in Iran unless you get permission from the US government?

Well, no matter what country you live in, you are subject to its government's laws and rules, and you need the permission of your government to do almost anything. I did not receive any resistance from my government when I decided to play in Iran. I think the nations are only divided from the political standpoint not a social one. I am not a politician, so I am not really qualified to answer that question in depth.

Have you found any similarities between the Iranian and American life?

Yes, in both countries family and religion play a very big part in everyday life.

Have you ever experienced a culture shock here?

Yes, I would say the reckless driving has definitely shocked me. I have never seen anything like it. I thought the driving was bad in Saudi Arabia, but it's much worse here. People here cross the street like they are made of steal. Some don't even look; they just carelessly walk in front of cars.

What is your opinion of the Iranian Basketball?

I think the basketball here is surprisingly strong. There are very good foreign players and a lot of the local players are also very good. There are some surprisingly tall players here like Jaber from Zob Ahan. He has to be at least 7'5'. Samad from Mahram and Hadadi from Saba are just as good as any player that I have seen outside of the NBA.

What about the Iranian basketball fans?

The fans are good. They are really rowdy and make a lot of noise, but I think my city, Gorgan, has the best fans. They are absolutely crazy about their home team and they show up at every game. They even come to our practices.

But some other teams who have come to play in Gorgan said they weren't at ease there, especially when local spectators were present?

I think it is because our fans are not usually very nice to our opponents, and they will scream, shout and call names. They will do anything to distract our opponents. They definitely give us a home court advantage.

With fans like that, do you have anything to complain about?

Well honestly, some of the gyms have a really hard surface and can get pretty cold in the winter. That takes a toll on your body. Also, I found that for me it is really hard to receive foul calls, which can change your game a bit. But all in all it has not really been that difficult.

Did you ever find it hard to communicate with your team mates?

Yes, there is a definite language barrier because most of my teammates do not speak English and their way of life is very different to mine. At first I did not agree with every player voicing his opinion about how the game should be played. I always thought you lead by example because anyone can tell you they are great, but someone that is actually great can show you their greatness.

So why didn't you try to adapt others to your style?

We have a saying in the USA, 'when in Rome do as the Romans do.' It is easier for me to adapt to the style of eleven other players than try to have them change to fit my style. I feel I can win playing any style. I prepare myself for all conditions in the off season.

Mahram was the first team to reach the semis rather early because your team did not play the second game against them in first phase of play-offs. Why did this happen?

I am not sure exactly. I was told that the weather was too bad to travel by bus and there were no plane tickets available. I was really disappointed because my teammate Eddie Elisma and I really wanted to play against them again. During the first game, they caught us off guard with a lot of double teams. We felt we were ready for them for the second game, but we never got a chance to show it.

Have you learned anything about Islam and Iranian culture since arriving here?

Well, my wife was raised as a Muslim, though she no longer practices the religion. So I have a great deal of respect and understanding for Islam. As for the Iranian culture, I have learned that the people here are very hospitable. All Iranians seem to be like one big family, and they easily welcome a foreigner like me into that family.

And what souvenirs will you be taking back home from your time in Iran?

I think Iran is a great place with a lot of history and many beautiful cities. The people here are amazing and I would rather be here than any place in the world, except the USA with my wife and family, of course. However, life here is very different from the life in my country. You have to have a totally different mentality to live in my country. But I will never forget my teammates and coaches. They have been great. They have treated me like family no matter how I have played.

Will you consider staying in Iran if you get new offers or do you prefer to go back home?

Yes, absolutely, I hope I can play here for many years in the future. I feel I had a very good season here on and off the court. I had no problems with the game or the people, and I would love to come back if I receive the right offer. The only problem is that I have been away from my wife. Next season, I think she may come to Iran.

Iran's basketball team has qualified for the Olympics after an absence of over 50 years. How do you assess this?

I think it shows just how far Iranian basketball has come, and it is only going to get better. The Olympics feature the best teams in the world, and Iran didn't just qualify, they qualified as the top team in Asia. In my opinion, that is a huge achievement. And I think if the Iranian basketball organization catches up with the talent of its players and provide them with better facilities and more decent statistics, the Iranian league would be respected all over the world.

Thank you Anwar for your participation in this interview.
Thank you.

Salam Dani

BEEM finished on 6th position (regular season) with Michael Byers-Dawson and Kevin Jobity. but before the start of play-offs Michael and Kevin leaved BEEM for unknown reason. BEEM defeated Azad UN without imports easilly but for quarterfinal, federation alowed them to take imports (note: Iranian teams can not change their imports after 11th week). Cage joined Beem just a day before their Quarterfinal against ZobAhan. they lost 2-1 to Zob.

first: Beem 86 - Zob Ahan 83 / Cage (22pts)
second:Zob Ahan 86 - Beem 69 / Cage (18pts)
third:Zob Ahan 74 - Beem 73 / Cage (24pts)

Beem's local players are very good. they have Pooya Tajik (Iran NT Captain) as power forward and Iman Zandi as shooting guard. Zandi and Tajik both missed FIBA ASIA 2007 for injuries. and with Siavash Mohseni, Mojtaba Bani-Aghil and Mehdi Askarnejad their roster is complete.

last match, in Esfahan , Beem lead by +20 in 3rd quarter but ZobAhan came back and lead 72-71, 7 second !! Cage scored with an acrobatic shoot.just 1 second and stupid Samake fouled on Oshin Sahakian at buzzer. he scored both free throws and 74-73 for Zob.
Cage played very well in last match (i did not see others) but Samake killed their hopes !! ZobAhan is a very good team and played bravely against them. (zob lost 3-2 to title holder Saba Battery in semifinal)

Thanks Mohsen,appreciate it.
Poya Tadjik is a very good player,i saw him many times especially in Waba 2004 which it took place in Iran.Iman Zandi also his name is known for me but i cant remember his face but if i'm not wrong he's very good 3 pointer, right ?
Yesterday Calvin Cage played his first game this season with Feytroun and he surprised all of us,he scored 26pts in 3 quarters without any training with the team before.
Take care!

YES, Iman was my favourite player when he played for Sanam. he is famous for his 3 points shoots and especially his lay-ups. but if i am not wrong your El-Khatib (or another lebanese player) broke his leg in 2007 Jones Cup :D

Pooya and Iman after historical Asian Games Bronze. I said historical, because this medal changed Iran's Basketball history. especially quarterfinal against Japan. i never forget last minute, when we broke quarterfinal taboo.

GREAT commentary, Mohensa! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I hope that we can get the same quality post after Wednesday's game.

I predicted at the start that Sabba would win, but now I'm not so sure. Can they do it? I don't know. I really don't know. They've got the players to win and if Afagh is as good a shooter as Mohensa says he is, I think they've still got a "puncher's chance."

Did you attend the game or watch it on TV? If you're attending the games and you take pictures, we want to see them! :D Especially pictures of the crowd and the stadium.

:D Especially pictures of the crowd and the stadium.

hi
yesterday I watched on TV !!

and about final , Saba is in bad days, they changed their president, they are very tired , they played 5 difficult matches against ZOB in semifinal and they will play next week in WABA CUP. they lost their best forward AIDIN NIKKHAH and after injury of Makan Dioumassi they have not good guard ! their power is 2 Hameds (Hamed Haddadi and Hamed Afagh) and Garth Joseph played very bad is last 2 or 3 matches. he is old and very tired !

Aidin (9) and Makan(8) both missed final for different reasons.
http://www.iranbasketball.org/www/photonews/Saba_1_b.jpg

but Mahram , Mahram's roster is very strong but they have not good reserves, with Tony Madison, Arthur Long, Mehdi Kamrani, Samad Nikkhah and Hamed Sohrabnejad they are unbeatable in asia (be sure) but they need better reserves. yesterday after 5th foul of Long and Kamrani they played very bad but Samad Nikkhah saved Mahram. he is the best player of Iran Superleague.

my prediction:
if Dioumassi play / 50-50
else / 60-40 for Mahram

Mahram won the title !!

Saba Battery 93 - Mahram 106
quarters: (25-20, 25-32, 16-29, 27-25)

Serie / Mahram 2 - Saba Battery 0

no difference between first and second match !! Mahram played better and they deserved to win. no doubt Final MVP is Samad Nikkhah Bahrami. he took the cup from hands of his father.

today Dioumassi played for Saba but with injury leg! very good match for Hooman Rezaei and Mehdi Kamrani. Kamrani is still our best guard.

3rd place match:

Zob Ahan 52 - Kaveh 74

Kaveh on 3rd place !!

congrats for Mahram.
But i think that serie of 3 games is not good absolutely.why they used this system ?? ur league is ended very soon so they can postpone the end some weeks just to let the final games on fire.

YES, in fact, the final is best of 5 (like semifinal) but this year we have many unpredicted problems. death of Aidin (2 weeks delay) and Iran's coldest winter (another 2 weeks delay) and federation had not another choice.

yes Iran's league ended very soon because we have own calendar and own year. this league is 1386 league (not 2007/2008) and today is 15/12/1386 for Iran. (just 14 days remain to new year)

but i am agree with you. basketball federation must change the schedule completely (for example 1386/1387). like our football system.

Thanks so much for posting these photos, Mohensa. Whenever I see photos of Iranian basketball players, I always think they should be in the WWE. :D

I'm surprised. I really thought that Sabba would win. I don't know why...I've just always thought they're the best franchise in the league with the best coach and players who will always work as hard as they can. Plus, Haddadi and Joseph are absolute beasts. Oh well.

Yes, that trophy looks great. It would be nice in my living room. :D

The picture of Nikkhah and his mother is a little sad. Obviously Nikkhah is so happy that he won the game, but with his mother standing there crying...it's just a bitter-sweet photo....

Mahram was really better. Mahram defeated Saba 4 times and they deserved. (Mahram lost to Saba in friendly Dubai tournament with uncomplete team)
Mahram had only two losses through the whole season against Zob Ahan and Kaveh.

Super League comes to an end with all ups and downs, Mahram wins title

Tony Madison scored 24 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as Mahram clinched their first ever championship title Wednesday in the Iranian Super League with a 106-93 win over Saba Battery, the Asian title-holder. It was the sauce-makers' second win in a row after they downed Saba 101-93 on Monday. The defending champion Saba Battery played the first game without the services of French point-guard Makan Dioumassi who was suffering from an injury. He played 40 minutes in his team's second challenge. Mahram's Samad Bahrami scored 20 points but had to leave the court when he received his second technical. Art Long had left the game earlier when he continued his aggressive play and picked up his second technical foul.
It came as the coaches of both teams, the bench players and even the fans seemed to be frustrated with the mistakes of referees and their inconsistency in calling or not making calls when they should have, in the last two final games.
'There were several major reasons that stopped us from repeating the championship this season,' Saba's coach, Mehran Shahintab said, 'we lost one of our key players, Aidin Bahrami who passed away in a car crash before the play-offs; also we had to play 3 or 4 games in a week in the play-offs and finals, due to the squeezed schedule, which made our players too exhausted.'
Saba Battery suffered from another blow during the play-offs when there were changes going to happen inside the managerial board.
Meantime, in Isfahan, Kaveh handed Zob Ahan their second loss 74-52 in the 3rd-place games. Zob Ahan had been defeated 103-94 in the first game earlier this week.

why??? which one ? Well, Iranian players are always built. I mean, they've all got a lot of good muscle on them. They're just strong, like the WWE guys. I used to know a body-builder from Iran who was about the strongest guy I ever met. He had me sit on a weight-lifting machine once while he was working out because he wanted more resistance than the machine allowed. Amazing guy.

as i know, Pardis had only 1 import (Jabari) in 2007/08 season (1386 on Iranian calendar).
but i remember they tested some american players during the season but their serbian coach (Urlovic) just took Jabari.

if iam not wrong, Pardis played in Damascus tournament last december with 2 foreign players, but they rejected second import (unknown reason) and he didnt play in Iran. maybe he was the second import !

In addition to what he said:

Group A: Argentina, Australia, Iran, Lithuania, Russia, Qualifier A

Group B: Angola, China, Spain, USA, Qualifier B and Qualifier C

I'm pretty sure that two out of three of those qualifiers will be European or Latin American Teams. From what I can see, I don't think Korea and Lebanon can beat Slovenia and Greece, respectively. The biggest challenge will be with Lebanon since they're also facing Brazil. As for Korea, I'm not sure because they might find a way to beat Canada.

it is Iran's Olympic spirit rule : "Iranian sportsmen never play against opponents under Israel name due to sympathise with the suffering of the Palestinians and Lebaneses."

in Olympic, our opponent will be Russia and not Israel , and surely, we will show our Olympic Sprit and will play against Russia , even if they have a coach from Israel.

PS: as far as i know, David Blatt is an american jewish !

He live in Israel since he was 20 years old.
And the second coach of Russia, Dani Goth Born in Israel.

Maybe you should change the law and not play against Russia cause you want to show sympathy to the suffering of the people of Chechnya. And not play against USA because you really care for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. And not play against China cause they misbehave at Tibet....... And then you could play your own Olympic games against yourself , I'm sure it will increase the number of your medals.

Wish you good luck in the Olympic games.

yes, you are right, but there is a little difference, Iran does not recognize Israel as a country.

yes we can, but it is not delicious, we win our medals in front of american, Russian and Chinese eyes ! we increase our medals by beating them.

Is it a league or a tournament? When do the games start, Mohensa?

it is a league, with Regular season and now play-offs

9 teams:
Saba, Mahram, Kaveh, Azad UN, Ararat, Rah-Ahan, Pouya, Izadyar Aseman

i think it starts 4 month ago. but with many interrupts (due to WABA Cup, Iran's new year and ...)

5 or 6 year ago it was very important , but now professional Superleague clubs not play in Tehran SL with their best players. except Saba , because they will participate in Asian Club Championships in May and they are ready and crushed other teams really easy ! by +60 pts margin !

--------------------
Results:

Quarterfinal:
Saba Battery 109 - Pouya 36

Semifinal:
Saba Battery 91 - Rah-Ahan 75
Izadyar 87 - Azad UN 85

anyway, Saba beat Izadyar in Final by +50.

Final:

quarters: (33-16, 29-10, 20-15, 24-15)

why Iran did not participate in 2005 FIBA U21 Championship ? because of Israel
many times, Iranians lost their possible medals beacause of Israel draw.

Will they leave the team and join other teams in Tehran? (If that happens that will be very sad since Saba is one of the best teams in Asia)

Or can Saba force the players to play in Qom or they will face penalties?

Salam Khalid
i think players without contract will leave Saba Battery but we know that more money can solve every problems !

Qom is 150km far from Tehran. maybe they live (and train) in Tehran and only play in Qom !

but i am sure Saba Battery Qom will be much weaker than Saba Battery Tehran.

the chances of non-Tehran teams winning the league is very very low (Zob Ahan Esfahan is an exception)

look at the history of 3 Iranian major leagues :

Basketball

Winners:
Zob Ahan Esfahan: 7 titles
Saba Battery Tehran: 3
Paykan Tehran: 2
Sanam Tehran: 2
Shahrdari Esfahan: 2
Mahram Tehran: 1

Teams from Tehran: 8
Teams from Esfahan: 9
------------------------------------
Football

Teams from Tehran: 27 titles
Teams from Esfahan: 1
Teams from Ahvaz: 1

----------------------------------
Volleyball

Teams from Tehran: 20 titles
Teams from Qazvin: 1

WOW. Iran upsets Serbia!!!!

NANJING (Olympics) - Iran shook up the basketball world on Wednesday night in Nanjing by stunning Serbia 72-70 in arguably the most famous win in the country’s sporting history.

The Asian champions, who have been warming up for the Beijing Games, suffered through numerous defeats this summer and also dropped their first game against Argentina on Tuesday at the FIBA Diamond Ball.

Twenty-four hours later and they shocked one of the proudest hoops nations in the world.

“This is the biggest win in Iranian basketball history,” Iran’s Serbian coach Rajko Toroman said.

“We had played very well in Salt Lake City (at the Rocky Mountain Review) and now we have done this. It’s something to be proud of and something that will help us build our confidence.”

“Iran have played about 26 games before the Diamond Ball and they showed they are a good side,” said Serbia captain Milos Vujanic.

“I think we made too many mistakes and let Iran play their game. We had a chance to win the game, but we didn’t score. We have to analyse this defeat and move on and prepare for tomorrow’s game (against Argentina).

“I think they are going to be a surprise team in the Olympic Games.”

Hamad Ehadadi, Iran’s giant center, was immense.

He and the excellent guard Javad Davari each scored 20 points.

Ehadadi had 20 rebounds and also blocked six shots, an incredible effort from a player who drew interest from NBA clubs earlier this summer when he played in the Rocky Mountain Review in Utah.

Iran led by as many as 10 points but struggled to put the Serbians away and in the final minute, an unsportsmanlike foul put Novica Velickovic on the line with his team trailing by four.

Velickovic made the first but missed the second only for Serbia to get the offensive rebound.

Zoran Erceg would then follow up a missed shot and score to cut the deficit to 71-70 with 25 seconds left.

Oshin Sahakian failed to inbound the ball within five seconds, turning it over to the Serbs.

But Amir Amini came up with a steal, and Serbia had to foul Ehadadi. He made one of two from the line for a 72-70 lead with 10 seconds remaining.

Serbia rushed the ball up the floor but Dusan Kecman turned the ball over with a bad pass. Serbia got the ball back but Stefan Markovic’s desperation three-pointer was off target.

Iran out-rebounded Serbia, who are getting ready for their EuroBasket 2009 qualifying games, 42-37.

Hamed Afagh also poured in 14 points for the Iranians.

Zoran Erceg led Serbia with 14 points.

Any news of Iranian clubs signing good foreign players? I really think that Iran's quick progression internationally is because of a good league that has been made much more competitive by signing foreigners. Mohsena, do you know where Garth Joseph has gone? Is he living in Iran? He was a great character and basketball player, also good friends with Samad and his deceased bro Aidin.

Does anybody know whether Coleman will play 2008/2009 in the Iran-Superleague again or really signed at Reading Railers (Dominican Rep.)?
Is there any other player from the NBA to play in Iran next season?
It' just great seeing basketball players conquer the "axis of evil"!

Iranian league will start one month later and still nothing is confirmed because feeration changed some rules and many teams are not agree with federation.
1) players U18 cant change their team
2) every team can sign with at most 3 national players (25 players invited to national team, not only 12 olympians)

concerning Coleman, he had a good season last year but as far as i know his club want to get better players !

Why is that?

economical problems as usual
Daneshgah Azad Club compete in most of iranian leagues, even in Volleyball, Taekwondo, Water polo , Handball, Judo , etc. i think they decide to spend their money in cheaper leagues.

last year they withdrew during the play-offs and officially relegated but IRIBF decreased the number of teams ! they didnt deserve to play in superleague

iran is taking the good decision by having 3 national players in every team, when the flbb wanted to do this last year the world went upside down, especially with riyadi, they say that they can't compete in outside competitions but iran has won the asia cup for clubs back-to-back and they did this, riyadi just have excuse to keep winning on lebanese teams, when the terms for competing is equal between teams riyadi will not be so dominant which is good for the league. When vogel for example is supposed to play as import they say vogel is being fought, but when they went to asia they forget he is lebanese just cause khatib came with them then they accepted.the solution is simple, either vogel is a foreigner with one other like smail or 2 foreigners+vogel and the other nine teams should have 3 foreigners, only then the terms for competing will be equal. in syria al-jalaa is not allowed to play with the brazilian syrians, only in outside competitions and they don't accuse their federation of fighting them, only riyadi has this complex,i bet if another team had vogel for 5 years they wouldn't stop bitchin about it and accuse of bribing referees etc.

' Shiraz A.S. Pipe Basketball Club which is a new team in Iran Super league Basketball created by GholamReza Khajeh, started their main practices since April. They signed Asadollah Kabir as Head Coach, who was the olden Head Coach of Iran National Basketball. They also signed Ali Doraghi (210-C-84) who was one of Iran National Players in Beijing 2008 Olympic. In season 2008-2009,Shiraz a.s pipe want to be one of the best teams in competition with Mahram, Saba Battery, Petrochimi and Zob Ahan, so they signed Zoran Majkic (207-C-78, agency: Court Side) and Kevin Alphonso Sheppard (183,PG,83) as their foreign players in Center and Point Guard positions. Wow! For this to happen to one of the best teams in Asia is very alarming!
I'm hoping that there are many sponsers that would be interested in helping them out.

What the hell? What details can you give us mohsena?

this year iran sport government body sent Saba Battery Club (Football and Basketball) to Qom and the Club management changed, but now after 3 monthes, they said that they cant support basketball team ! because their budget is limited and Football is more important !!! (Saba Battery football club will play in 2009 AFC Champions League)

but i think finally Saba Battery will stay in the league (at least this year)

5 possible choices:
1) dissolve / 15%
2) stay in Qom with Saba Battery / 40%
3) stay in Qom with another sponsor / 10%
4) back to Tehran with Saba Battery / 30%
5) back to Tehran with another sponsor / 5%

first week :

Shahrekord 84 - BEEM 79
quarters: 24-18, 42-35, 60-58
Ararat 94 - Gorgan 92
quarters: 22-23, 49-46, 69-72
Mahram 76 - Khorasan Razavi (ex Aboumoslem) 71
quarters: 14-16, 44-34, 65-50

poor start for titleholder !
Mahram had 3 national players today and this result is not acceptable againt an unknown team ! Mashhadi team is really young , their famous player is Milad Mazrae (captain of Iran 2006 U18 team). they lost the match but they did a great job in last quarter.

another good result for young teams ! BEEM lost to Shahrekord !
i still dont know the their roster they beat one of the favorites ! huge surprise !

The League just started - Oct 24, 2008 (by Mohammad Ahmadi)

The professional league in Iran just started. It's a very big controversy in 08-09 season as teh main candidate for championship title - Saba Battery - lost their main sponsor and may be out of the competition.
It's very strange that three games of the first round were already cancelled. So instead of 6 games, there were only half of them played. Hopefully the teams will be able to just postpone these games and play them on later date. The reason of other matches being cencelled was that Azad University Team is not completed yet, Zob Ahan had some players in Iran University Basketball Team and they just arrived in middle of the week. And Saba Battery has no sponser for being in competition. The other team named Shiraz a.s Pipe had rest for first week.
Last season champion Mahram had unexpectedly tough game against newcomer Aboomoslem. But 76-71 gave them already leadership position at the beginning of the season.
Without Kaveh and eventually Saba (both made Final Four last year) there may be completely different league this season.

Round 1 results:
Mahram - Aboomoslem 76-71
Ararat - Gorgan 94-92
Shahrekord - BEEM 84-79
