Guys, why do you think Japan is not doing well in basketball while they are doing great in soccer and baseball???

I really think Japanese should be good at basketball since they can have many naturalized players(since they are more opned to foreigners), and money to train thier players.

I have no idea why Japan is so far behind Korea, Philiphines, China, and the rest of Asian teams..

I think generally the average height of the Japanese is quite short so I guess this is a big factor. I cant really remember seeing any tall ones?

Well.. When I saw the Filifino team at the Jones Cup, they had pretty good height. Also they had many mixed or naturalized (not sure) players playing for them. Anyway, I can't really judge Whether Japan is better or not.

Local Japanese people are short, similar to us Filipinos. The same goes to Koreans. As you can see, the Philippines, Japan, and Korea are all having problems with the 5th position.

The most advantageous is Korea given that they have Ha-Seung Jin; however, most of their centers standing 6-9 are not as formidable compared to the ones in Europe. As I might know it, Kim Joo-Sung is still part of the NT; a role he has had since 2002. The thing I don't understand with the Koreans is why they didn't include Seo Hung-Jun (not sure if I got his name right) in their NT line-up last year.

As for the Japanese, they have centers standing 203 and above cm but like the Philippines, they are not that formidable in scoring but rather in defending. I think that the reason why the Japanese NT needed a naturalized player is because they need a man who is can has equal touches in the defensive and offensive side of basketball. My deep respects also to the Japanese because of their cheers to our NT during our stint in the FIBA Asia Champs, we needed their extra moral support.

As for you Mr. FEIFEI, we all know China is the best in Asia so why don't you be fair in posting responses by citing some factors of why the nations you chose are behind or beyond Japan's basketball. Think like a professional will you; People on top of things are suppose to show their class instead of being snobbish.

Oh yeah, Japan got a better standing in the recent Asian Champs because they were not part of the group of death. Imagine your team breezing through the first two games in your group while not worrying about winning or losing the last opponent. You should have sympathy to teams being placed in groups of death because they are the ones with the huge disadvantage; not only will they have to face a daunting task in the group stages, their team will be considered the most underdog because their players are bruised, injured, or exhausted during the next round.

If you recall in the FIBA World Championship 2006, Greece was placed in Group C, the toughest group of all, in which they lost Nikos Zisis after a game with Brazil.

I wish I knew a little about Japanese basketball league and its programs.

Many of you are saying Japanese are not showing significance in basketball because of their height and stuff. But I think almost every Asian teams have trouble with heights. It shouldn't be only Japan's problem. And also I am sure if there is a good basketball program in Japan, they can scout some taller kids when they are young and make them good players.

What I am saying is that "height" is common problem in Asian basketball, so height is not the reason Japan is not improving in basketball.
I think it is the basketball program in Japan that's not helping. In Korea, a lot of young players who are extremley tall(like Yao or Ha) are recruited by local elementary school coaches or middle school coaches. Very small number of kids survive or show talents, otherwise, they quit because they realize how tough basketball is. I think only way for Asian teams to have good tall players(Yao or Ha) is that we have to keep searching tall kids and make them good players. Also we have to be extremely lucky to have players like Yao who have both heigh and skills(alot of Asian players who are tall are clumsy)

Anyway, Why do u guys think Japan is not improvoing in basketball????

Yup... pretty even but I don't think Japan can beat the Philippines if they're both on the same pool... Japan beat Lebanon but RP beat Lebanon before the tourney... we can't really judge until both senior national teams play a game....

Traditional Asian powerhouses are difficult to judge which one is better than the other because they may improve or not in their next games. We don't know if Jordan can still beat the Philippines in their next match-up. The reason why we lost to Jordan is that three of our players were weakened during the opening match against Iran and our team was only formed like 5 months ago compared to Jordan who were playing together for a year or almost now. Don't go judging our capabilities by simply looking at the results in previous champs because you don't know how huge we can improve.

It's their homecourt and most of their games were won because a lot of teams who played against them played bad.

Jordan, for example, trailed Japan 27-7 in opening regulation. Fumihiko Aono is a defender but not really a go to guy in scoring. Japan's primary offense is similar to the Philippines, mainly their guards scores most of their points. But I just don't get why they still have Orimo in their line-up, this guy needs to retire. anyways, they have a promising player in Kawamura.

I think FeiFei is a Ms.. I don't think he/she meant any harm in his/her assessment. Team Pilipinas has only been playing a lot recently and most assessments made by those who are non-filipino will most likely be from the limited exposure our team had. Unfortunately, most results from the limited games Team Pilipinas played had poor results. We know the capabilities of our team, but from other's point-of-view it's not as good as we see it. :)

Going back on topic: I agree with the assessment that the Japanese more offensive fire power. I remember 2002 Asian Games when RP played Japan in a very close game and Orimo was scoring at will (atleast for some time), but when he was not able to score none of his teammates could compensate.

Such record doesn't matter because there is no way the Philippines will beat China with Yao and Yi on it....

Does it really matter if Japan is better than the Philippines or not? I think it matters more is if any of these Asian countries and their teams are on par with the top leagues, such as the Euro-league and the NBA.

Japan plays hard and scrappy. The Filipinos resort to being flashy and showtime experts.

But in Japan, basketball is a very minor sport. In the Philippines, basketball is a religion!! :cool:
