cesafi 2008 is a balance competition with u.v. losing mostly their reliable players and some schools are beefing up their line up. it would be an exciting season for cesafi this year. looking forward to Greg Slaughter v.s. Junmar Fajardo duel in the shaded lane. can't wait to see these two gianst compete each other and will surely encourage both to work really hard on both ends of the court.

there was a report that eala will try to help CESAFI promote their games over the country in forging a deal with a national TV network. i think it was revealed by comm. tuikinhoy before.

i read somewhere that a guy surnamed nunez is doing well for SWU. does anybody know his height?

Janno Nuñez is a 6'3" wide-bodied forward from Davao who played alongside the mysterious man 6'6" Joel Ambohot at Agro Industrial Foundation. He was said to be once a Mythical 5 member in Davao's juniors competitions before lying low for a year and now he's back with a vengeance in cebu.

I do hope though tha Cesafi should be sanctioned by SBP for their billigerent actions. What values does the Cesafi trying to teach to their students, that it's okey not to abide by the rules for as long as you benefit from it.At present Cesafi claims a neutral stance but joins the BAP tournnaments but didnt not join the SBP planning workshop held in Cebu.

It's really a shame for Cesafi head TANGKULOY, he once answered in one interview that CESAFI might still join PCCL since probably by that time the leadership problem would already be resolve. It would be easy the higher ups of Cesafi to say come October, they will say that cesafi already acknowledge SBP thus CESAFI can join PCCL.

Down with Commisioner Tangkuloy..... burn in hell with Graham Lim, Pichay , Lito Alvarez, Villafuerta and all BAP supporters.

Starting on a sour note
By Marian C. Baring
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THE University of San Carlos Warriors finally discovered the formula that may just be the secret that could topple seven-time champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi).

Double team Greg Slaughter.

This proved to be effective as the Warriors finally hit paydirt when they bashed the Green Lancers, 80-76, in the season opener yesterday at an overflowing Cebu Coliseum.

It was the first time the Lancers lost in their first game of the season.

“We had been playing with the idea for quite some time now. We practiced for this for a week. We decided to put it to use in the final few minutes so that Slaughter will not have time to adjust. We were also lucky because their top shooters were not there,” said head coach Jay Ramirez.

It also seems two-time MVP Enrico Llanto found a replacement for his longtime partner Niño Ramirez, in new recruit Filipino-Aussie Emel Rowe, as the duo clicked well especially in the crucial final minute.

With the score tied at 72, Llanto squeezed in a difficult left-hand scoop under the goal against Slaughter and another defender for a two-point lead less than a minute left.

UV failed to convert their ball possession and Rowe capitalized and sank a buzzer-beating layup for a confident four-point lead in the final 23 seconds and Giovanni Padillo scored four straight charities to the win.

Also worthy of mention were the efforts of Sam Hermosa and Rowe, who scored back-to-back triples in the fourth quarter.

“It was a good game. We could celebrate about it for a while, but we need to get back on the study board tomorrow,” said Rowe.

Slaughter’s efforts were not enough. The Green Lancers did not have its top shooters Von Lañete and Ritchum Dennison, who had to be benched because of injuries. Dennison had a shoulder problem, while Lañete was nursing a bout with chicken pox.

Warriors Shock Lancers

The Freeman
Sunday, August 3, 2008

The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors pulled a major upset - an 80-76 victory over the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers last night in the opening day of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the secondary match, the University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters showed their finesse and debuted with a 96-77 victory over the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F).

Both teams never gave up until the closing minutes of the ballgame when the Warriors broke the see-saw battle, stripping the momentum away from the Lancers who opened the fourth period with a 6-0 run and a 61-55 advantage and holding a minor rally that shattered a 55-all deadlock at the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors fans later went ecstatic when Fil-Australian rookie John Emel Rowe hit a crucial triple that gave them the lead, 72-70, still 1:46 left in the fourth quarter and a basket by Enrico Llanto and Rome made it 76-72 with 23 seconds left.

Four insurance, free throws by Giovanni Padillo mattered most in helping putting the game away for the Warriors who padded the lead to four, 78-74, at 13.6 seconds left.

It was the first loss by the Lancers in the eight-year-old CESAFI although last year, the Warriors have also beaten the same foes, 80-77 in Game 4 of their finals.

Warriors' coach Jay Ramirez said their defense worked against Gregory Slaughter who nearly played the whole game. He said that they have to apply double-teaming on Slaughter in the final five minutes when they were certain the 6-11 Lancer's tower wa already tired.

Rowe, who topscored for the Warriors with 17 points, said he was playing his role with the team and he doesn't need to go into the post because it was not his assignment.

"I never mind scoring from the post because Slaughter is taller than me," said Rowe, who had also one crucial recovery during a wild scramble for ball possession.

Llanto, who is playing in his last year for the Warriors, finished with 15 points while Padillo added 13 points and Sam Hermosa, who alos had quality points, added 10.

Slaughter, the only main source of wealth for the Lancers, scored 32 points but aside from Junjun Lasal who scored 12 points, no other Lancers were able to support their offensive.

The Lancers, who have "more vulnerable" crew this year, played without Richum Dennison who injured his left arm. Von Harry Lanete was stricken with chicken pox and Phil Mercader was advised to rest for his heart problem.

They wore a black band marked no. 8 in honor of their fallen comrade Lucky Pitogo, who had fallen to an assasin's bullet early this year.

The scores:

First Game:

UC (Jrs.) 96-------- Pogoy 21, Pearce 17, Tindoy 12, Delara 10, Palileo 9, Ampo-on 8, Solon 7, Codilla 5, Taboada 3, Caballero 1

USP-F (Jrs.) 77------ Batucan 11, Cañete 11, Cagunidangan 10, Ferraren 10, Demania 9, Nudalo 7, Arong 6, Silao 5, Labares 2, Casaleri 2, Diapera 2, Lambujon 2

Second Game:

USC (Srs.) 80------- Rowe 17, Lkanto 15, Padillo 13, Hermosa 9, Cantonao 9, Gallarde 7, Blanes 3, Cortes 2, Joven 2, Codilla 2

UV (Srs.) 76--------- Slaughter 32, Lasala 12, Lao 9, Villanil 7, Diputado 5, Cincoflores 4, Cabahug 2, Tagalog 2, Sendrijas 2. Halftime: 40-all. (GGM)

So, I think this is the start of Slaughter era. If Greg can bring UV back on track...then he must have improved a lot. A 32point game is acceptable for a 6'11" giant. Blocks? any? rebounds?...PLEASE do include some rebounds and blocks or any stats other than score.

But the best effort is made by Junmar Fajardo of UC, 30 pts, 13 rebs (8 off) and 9 blocks.

From Sunstar:

Fajardo powers UC

UNIVERSITY of Cebu’s prized 6-foot-7 center Junmar Fajardo made his return to the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) an explosive one as he led the team to backdoor win over the Southwestern University Cobras, 91-86, Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Fajardo only managed to play in a few games two years ago and was forced to sit out the entire 2007 season because of injuries. In that short time, Fajardo showed a few hints of spectacle that left people intrigued at what the then lanky giant from Pinamungajan can do.

Yesterday, all eyes were on Fajardo—including those from University of the Visayas Green Lancers’ much-hyped center Gregory Slaughter, who was measuring up a worthy nemisis—as Fajardo was reintroduced into the premier collegiate league with a bang, coming up with a game-high 31 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocks that led UC to claim its first win for the season.

It seems like UC is well on the way to make up for a disastrous 2007 season, when they fell short in the title bid, bombing out of contention early in the competition.

This year, with a muscled-up Fajardo in the frontlines, UC is ready to take Cesafi by storm with the help of regular dependable like Jansen Abella and with a troop of sturdy additions led by US-raised Filipinos Edward Pao and Kevin Quilantang.

Surprise

In the game, UC was buried by a 12-point deficit in the fourth period when Fajardo and Abella dropped a 13-0 bomb to take the lead, 74-73, in just four minutes that took the Cobras by surprise.

The tug-of-war for the lead continued on with the teams taking turns at the lead until the final stretch, when Pao broke an 86-all deadlock in the final 44 seconds, that had ensured UC of the victory.

Abella scored 20 markers for UC, while Pao had 10 points as Quilantang made 14 markers.

Alfred Belande paced SWU with 26 points while Janno Nunez had 13 markers.

UC (91)—Fajardo 31, Abella 20, Quilantang 14, Pao 10, Mohammad 8, Agas 5, Juliane 2, Cueva 2. SWU (86)—Belande 26, Nunez 13, Escober 11, Poligrates 10, Maguate 10, Jalandoni 6, Litorja 6, Django 2, Divinagracia 2. (MCB)

Fajardo’s triple-double helps UC escape gritty SWU

Cebu Daily News

August 05, 2008

Games today, August 5, 2008:
(Cebu Coliseum)
4 p.m. – USJ-R vs. USPF (juniors)
5:30 p.m. – USC vs. CIT (seniors)

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters are ready to reclaim their spot amongst the elite squads of the Cesafi and they announced it with a huge 91-86 come-from-behind victory over the reigning National Students Basketball Championships titlists, Southwestern University (SWU) in Sunday’s last game at the Cebu Coliseum.

After a long and disappointing season last year, which saw them stumble out of contention early on because of injuries and dissension in the team, UC is poised to start a new age in its rich history in the Cesafi with its crew of fresh rookies and the incredible play of prized big man Junmar Fajardo.

Fajardo, the agile 6-foot-7 behemoth from Pinamungahan, Cebu, missed all of last season with a knee injury but kicked off UC’s title bid with a rare triple-double performance with 31 points, 13 rebounds and a monstrous 10 blocks.

The last of his block party came when it mattered the most as he courageously stuffed SWU forward Janno Nunez's left-handed attempt to preserve a precarious two-point advantage with 25 seconds remaining.

That block allowed UC to complete its comeback from 12-points down in the final period.

Seemingly down and out of it after SWU's Alfred Belande made it a 12-point advantage for the Cobras, 73-61 at the start of the fourth period, the Webmasters showed resiliency absent from last year's squad as they ran off 13 unanswered points behind Fajardo's inside dominance and Janssen Abella's outside sniping to take the lead 74-73.

A see-saw battle ensued and with the score tied at 86-all, Bohol-born but US-raised rookie forward Edward Pao rose to the occasion as he sank a mid-range jumper from the left wing to put the Webmasters in the driver's seat for good.

He would add a free-throw on top of Abella's two charities down the stretch to put the final nail on the coffin.

Abella added 20 markers and eight dimes while Pao had 10 points.

Another of UC's prized recruits, Kevin Quilantang, also shone in his debut as he tallied 14 points, half of which came in the final stanza.

The Cobras was led by Belande's 26 points while Nunez had 13 markers. SWU, though, missed the services of do-it-all forward Eric Zanoria, who will be out for two weeks because of the chicken pox.

Box scores:
UC (91) Fajardo 31, Abella 20, Quilantang 14, Pao 10, Mohammad 8, Agas 5, Juliane 2, Cueva 2.
SWU (86) Belande 26, Nunez 13, Escober 11, Poligrates 10, Maguate 10, Jalandoni 6, Litorja 6, Django 2, Divinagracia 2. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

what??? why not???
-man, i don't understand why there are so many rules/politics in filipino basketball...
-look at the ludicrous way they are handling the draft with gabe norwood and rob reyes! is the same thing happening for dillinger?
-if we really want to get better as a country and return to dominance as a country, let our best players play (whether its the rp youth, rp seniors, or the pba) regardless if they are full or 1/4 filipino
-heck, to me you are filipino if you love adobo and basketball! :D

as far as i understood that provision, they can actually play for the RP national team however they will be barred from playing for the rest of the school year. they can resume playing for their team if they will leave the RP team the following or else they will be barred from playing again.

if that is the provision, then that will effectively discourage a cesafi player from playing for the national team since he cannot play for his school till next year. this is just an indirect way of telling the player not to play for the national team. This is a cesafi joke rule.

I think the rule have been open to a lot of differing interpretations, but AFAIK there have been an instance that a Cebu player played for the national team but still allowed to play for the CeSAFI. Remember Jonathan Canceran of UC? the way I understand it(since the rule is stated in the present tense) is that while one is playing or training for the national team, then he is not allowed to play during that season that he is in the national team. This seems logical enough since you cant play in the CeSAFI at the same time train for the national team. But after the national team stint, the player will be allowed to play for his mother team provided he still meets the other qualifications..just my two cents

but if the player is poor and depends on the school for scholarship and money, the player might have 2nd thoughts playing for the national team.

but international tournaments run smack at collegiate season here in the Philippines. so they can only pick one. which brings us back to topic, either play in NT and forego the current season of CESAFi or play for school and not the international scene.

USC fans find reason to cheer in Rowe
By Marian C. Baring
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

LAST year, an avid gay supporter of the University of San Carlos Warriors donned a wedding gown during the Cesafi finals and cried for Niño Ramirez to marry him.

This year, Ramirez is gone, but the supporter is still around and he has shifted his “love” on Filipino-Aussie Emel Rowe.

Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum, the fan went to the middle of the court, in a sexy getup, to shake the hand of a surprised Rowe.

For years, it has been a struggle for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) to keep fans interested and remain a supporter.

All they needed it seems was a player with boyish looks despite an unruly coif, a smile that bares colored braces and talent to boot to keep people not just interested but glued on their seats.

Last Tuesday night, a first for the Cesafi, stayed even in a lopsided match. In regular games, people leave in the third quarter what with USC leading by more than 20 points over Cebu Institute of Technology.

People heartily screamed his name, whether the ball was passed to him, when he made a shot or even when he missed them or when he was called for traveling or when he rested on the bench for a while.

A few years back, even if games were held at their gym, USC’s foes will most likely have a bigger crowd that them.

USC, which had for three years, slowly and successfully drawn supporters, might be arriving at its success point, thanks to their impressive start, winning over the UV Green Lancers in the opening and acquiring Rowe.

Debut

His explosive debut in Cebu collegiate basketball last Sunday, was enough to draw crowds for the team’s second game last Tuesday and keep them until even after the final curtain was drawn.

Rowe got an encore. More than once.

“He was wondering why everyone was still there even after the game was through and we told him, they want to see you,” said coaching staff Ryan Betia.

And true enough, even as the lights of the Cebu Coliseum were starting to be turned off, when Rowe approached the stands, it was pandemonium.

“It is overwhelming. I mean, back home, 15 people watch the games and I definitely don’t have that kind fanbase,” said Rowe, who used to play with the Melbourne Tigers in Australia’s National Basketball League.

Fanbase

Rowe, however, is only too happy to help bring in the crowd but humbly shrugs off the credit.

“UV already has a huge fanbase and I know that USC has been trying really hard to match that and the team was able to do that for the past couple of years and I just joined the team recently so all the credit will have to go to the team, who works pretty hard to get to where we are now,” Rowe said.

Rowe admitted coming into the Cesafi was hard considering all the adjustment that he had to make, not with the team, with whom he has gelled well with but with the environment.

“It was hard. For the six weeks that I have been here, I have been sick five times and was even hospitalized,” said the 21-year-old who has become Cesafi’s new Fil-foreigner sensation after UV’s Gregory Slaughter.

He however, did not have a problem playing with the team.

“They’re a really good group of guys and I’m just doing my best to catch up with them. I think we can be successful if we do everything as planned and keep to our system,” he said adding that it’s an open season for the title this year. “It’s anyone’s game. UV’s still there, SWU and UC are on the rise and USJ-R’s just dying to play somebody. It’s great competition.”

Last Tuesday, the USC Warriors manhandled Cebu Institute of Technology, 80-45. Two-time MVP Enrico Llanto selflessly stepped aside from the spotlight and allowed his teammates to shine, playing defense all the way. Joven Cortez, an up and coming big man, Rowe and former UAAP player Sam Hermosa led the team to victory.

Cortez topscored for the team with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Rowe and Hermosa added 11 each. Llanto had three points, and backed his defensive play with 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals, for USC to notch its second win in the league and take solo leadership in the standing.

It was a real light and funny moment actually when that gay fan approached Emel in midcourt after the game..Rowe gamely shook his/her hand..Emel's enjoying it so far..USC is just so happy to have him, they play him center and it's so hard to trap USC because they have a 6'4 guy who can handle the leather. he is not selfish and does not need to have the ball in his hands but can take over when he needs to..USC is not even peaking yet

Lancers tame Panthers in Cesafi seniors game
Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News

August 09, 2008

After playing fodder for the University of the Visayas for the better part of the decade, the rest of the Cesafi is ready to prove that it has finally caught up with the seven-time champions after the lowly University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers took the Green Lancers the distance before falling, 73-77, in yesterday's seniors division game of the basketball tournament, at the University of San Carlos gym.

The Panthers, who were woefully overmatched in both heft and height, made up for it in sheer grit and hustle as they overhauled a 10-point deficit and appeared ready to pull the upset ax after taking a four-point lead, 73-69, from consecutive baskets by JR Gulane, Eleadero Rivera and Jonathan Monterde with 1:54 remaining in the final canto.

However, showing their vast championship experience, the Lancers persevered and tied the game at 73-apiece after two freebies by Von Lanete and an inside power move by Edrian Lao.

Then after a miss by USP's Jordan Bardilas, crafty guard Ritchum Dennison took over the match as he calmly sank a three-pointer from the left wing to give the lead back to the Lancers with 15.2 ticks left. He capped his heroics by stealing the ball from Bardilas on the ensuing possession and adding a free-throw and an offensive board off his miss to preserve the exciting win.

Dennison took up the slack left by injured guards Chris Diputado and Phil Mercader as he scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. 6-foot-11 pivot Greg Slaughter managed just 12 points but had five blocks.

JR Gulane led the Panthers with 18 points.

JAGUARS CRUSH

WEBMASTERS

Meanwhile, the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars sent University of Cebu crashing back down to earth with a, 97-69 bashing in their seniors game Thursday evening at the same venue, to gain a share of the lead with an unblemished 2-0 mark.

The Jaguars banked on a furious third period surge that staggered the Webmasters and left them staring at a 14-point deficit, 58-72 after being down by just a point, 37-38 at halftime. USJR raced off the gates like hungry Jaguars and took a seven-point lead, 50-43, courtesy of Jabe Delfino's three consecutive baskets. But the Webmasters came storming back to tie the match at 51-apiece off a three-pointer by guard Robinson Mohamad.

USJ-R though, had too many weapons at their disposal, as they immediately turned to newly-acquired forward Kurt Amores, from Dumaguete City, to do the damage down low.

The former Foundation University star responded by scoring eight points in a telling 12-2 rally that all but blew the wind out of UC's sails. The Jaguars then finished off the Webmasters with a three-point barrage from Delfino and star wingmen Luther Justiniani and Lyndon Gudez to outscore UC, 25-11 in the final period en route to the easy win.

As brilliant as the Jaguars were on offense, they were equally impressive on defense by limiting UC's 6-foot-7 behemoth Junmar Fajardo, to just 18 points. UC's hotshot backcourt of Jannsen Abella and Kevin Quilantang were also shackled as they combined for just 11 points, a far cry from their 34-point performance against SWU last time out.

Delfino led USJ-R with 18 points, 9 rebounds and three steals while Justiniani stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, eight boards and seven assists. Gudez also had 17 markers while center Manny Gabas had a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.

UV outhustles DBC for 2nd win

AFTER their opening day loss in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball season and after almost losing their second outing, seven-time champion the University of the Visayas Green Lancers have started to lose its mantra of invincibility and is in dire need of a huge comeback.

Yesterday, the got one.

The Green Lancers yesterday won over the league’s former whipping boys, the Don Bosco College Greywolves, 76-66, who managed to take the spot light away from the Lancers even for a while.

UV wanted to impede another humiliating performance and sauntered off to a 16-5 lead. But a grittier and more improved DBC turned the game in their favor taking the lead in the 3rd quarter.

However, UV posted a 12-0 run midway in the fourth quarter behind Harlow Villanil to squash whatever hopes DBC had for an upset as the Lancers were playing without Chris Diputado, who has a knee injury and Phil Mercader.

Greg Slaughter had another monstrous outing and was two blocks short of a triple-double.

The 6-foot-11 Fil-Am scored 22 points, had 12 rebounds and eight blocks. He also had two dunks for their second win in three outings.

As for "Project Bravo", at least he looks like an athlete. I hope that lean frame comes with quickness, agility and coordination, because that's how he's gonna be making a living in the bigger leagues.

New Fil-for Big Man Prospect Emerges for USC

Another Filipino-foreign big man prospect emerges for the University of San Carlos Warriors. The 19-year-old youngster left an electronic message for a USC alumnus who have been actively on the hunt for talent. The kid, raised in Europe is 6'7" tall with a wingspan of 7 feet. He once shattered a backboard during a dunk contest, scored a personal best of 63, runs 1.5 miles at an average of 8-10 minutes, recorded his fastest time at 10.5 seconds in the 100 meters, has a shooting range of 16-20 feet and whose game is being compared to German star Dirk Nowitzki. The kid who traces his roots to some part of Mindanao also speaks broken Tagalog.

wow, like seriously, this sounds tooo good to be true. the world record for the 100 M is 9.72 seconds? i mean 10.5 seconds for someone 6'7 is pretty fast, i only run it in 10.9 seconds. and the 1.5 miles in 8 minutes? and shattering a backboard? is this legit info?

Good thing that GS improve a lot since his 1st year in College. He improves his game especially on defense. Some fil-foreign players are playing in the south and not in the Main City like Manila. They Immediately play in south. UAAP/NCAA? well they might see themselves playing in Team b or languish on the bench.

I hope this Bravo being compared to Dirk is not hyped at all. We must see his game 1st before we react on how he plays basketball. In this, we see the weakness and the strong point of Bravo.

that's right, Bradwyn Guinto is the Fil-Aussie referred by Emel Rowe. I referred him to the RPYT but nothing turned out, I'm assuming though that Ateneo might already have an eye on this kid from Melbourne. max height is 6'7", Rowe says he could only be 6'5 or 6'6.

Project Bravo is the 6'8" half Filipino from Europe. He could be the subject of a tug-of-war between 2 Cebu schools but has initially committed to USC.

The other 6'9" Fil-for is San Francisco's Antonio Herico who traces his roots to Tuburan, Cebu. Initially USC also was interested in this guy but Herico declined to play in the Philippines as he set his priorities on his US studies and insinuated he is trying out for a college basketball spot in 2 years time. I hope he is at least a decent, serviceable big man though.

Another big man I know who has roots in Cebu/Visayas is from Hawai'i and is a former football lineman that goes by the name of Marlito Tomas. He is 6'5 or 6'6. Tomas once turned down a college scholarship for football. Could it be because he wants to play basketball in the Philippines instead? The kid is barely 19.

The other 6'6 and 6'5 guys I know from Sydney are wingmen forced to play on the block in competitions. They will soon visit RP to do an exhibition game tour with a Fil-Australian team.

I doubt anybody would give up the chance of being a basketball superstar in this country. Heck, there are a lot of basketball players out there who doesn't have his height, and yet are more than willing to give a shot at playing in the country.

I think its a waste of time talking about him. I bet he's no better than the 6'9" Francis De Leon, or 6'8" Chris Suguitan.

1.) with the fouls of fajardo and the free throws of slaughter is an indication that its getting harder to defend slaughter. Good news !

2.) the rebounding and blocks of fajardo and his not so bad shooting indicates he can still produce even though guarded by taller guy. Good news too !

I think its time to put this 2 young guys in the RP team pool.

the exciting sidelight was with less than a minute remaining, UV up 77-69 and with Fajardo fouled out already, Janssen Abella stole the ball and hit a three then stole the ball again and made a layup to get UC closer at 77-74. UV missed on the other end and UC had a chance to send it to overtime but in their haste turned the ball over and UV found GS on the break who was fouled after making the basket, 80-74. Pao scored on a putback after Agas split his FT's to make it 80-77, 6.6 seconds remaininng. then Lanete iced the game with charities, 82-77 with 2.2 seconds on the clock. Green Lancers shift fate at the Cesafi

THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers made a complete turnaround from their unimpressive start in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) as they displayed their true form yesterday when they bashed the University of Cebu (UV) Webmasters, 82-80, at the Cebu Coliseum.

“The only problem that this team has to deal with is over-complacency,” said UV head coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug.

“This is the real team. This is what we can do. We have finally shaken off that stigma of our first game and gave you this,” Cabahug said.

Confidence

The Green Lancers lost to the University of San Carlos (USC), their two-time finals nemesis, in the opening of the Cesafi. Cabahug is confident it is not happening again.

“I can now confidently say that our chances for an eighth straight title are here,” said Cabahug.

It was a much anticipated game as it was the first time the giants from both teams—UV’s Gregory Slaughter and UC’s Junmar Fajardo—face off for the first time.

And people trooped to the Coliseum like it was the championship game.

In the end, both players showed strengths in different aspects. Slaughter was up front in the offensive, as he led all the scorers with a whooping 27 markers to Fajardo’s 12.

Limits

Fajardo, however, made up for it, scoring 21 rebounds and four block shots against Slaughter’s nine rebounds.

The Webmasters struck first and actually led at the end of the first period, 22-17. But this was all they could heave as the Green Lancers spit fire and grabbed the lead in the second canto and never looked back.

The Green Lancers further solidified its lead, leading by as much as 17 points against the Webmasters, 64-49, going into the final frame.

The Webmasters tried to make a comeback, slicing the lead to just eight points with a 9-0 run at the start of the fourth.

The run was however put to a screeching halt with a basket from Von

Lañete to bring UV’s lead back to 10, 66-56.

The Webmasters struggled to get back in the game and managed to pull to within three points, 74-77 in the final 45 seconds, behind a triple and a bucket from Jansen Abella.

Bounce

UC had an opportunity to move closer, when Fajardo made a steal, but there was a fumble and UV regained ball possession. Slaughter then converted his charities in the final 22.8 seconds of the game. Once more, UC was about to make a mad dash to basket, but the ball slipped off Robinson Mohammad’s hands.

Finally, Mohammad threw a shot from the halfcourt to slice UV”s lead, 80-82. An impressive buzzer beater that came a little too late as time expired on the Webmasters. Lañete scored 14 points, five rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.

UV improved with 4-1 win-loss slate, while UC dropped to 2-2.

I only taped the first few minutes of the first quarter..:p i decided to enjoy the game instead..lol...anyway Fajardo had 12 points, 22 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 4 blocks and 5 fouls but was unable to carry his team. Greg Slaughter was 7 of 7 from the line and also had 9 rebounds and 1 block but his teammates made the difference. GS also had 2 jams in the game have you taped the dunks of GS? or any clips of the two guarding each other? can you share it bro?

SBP really needs to find a way around this, maybe coordinating calenders or 1 weekend a month, or something. this seems to be a really big problem with lending players to our RP NT. i would think that filipinos would love to represent their country in basketball. but i guess filipinos love money more...

because they are an educational institution. they're rather see their students brun books then get hurt playing bball outside their area of responsibility. they are also a business, they sell education. getting players means those guys dont pay tuition fees, so the "business" shoulders the cost. the player then becomes an asset. as "owners" of the asset, you want to make sure your asset is in good hands. hehe.:D just joking.:p

For RPYT, possible candidates that cant play for the team due to Condition that if they play for Youth team they cant play for one season of Collegiate Basketball season(Buenafe, Salva, Chua, Bringas, Fajardo) but the UAAP and other collegiate leagues run their tourneys on the 1st sem. If this happen next year then GS and other talents such as Fajardo and rowe can play for RP team as a reserve Role.

UV Lancers score another double
By Gabby G. Malagar
Monday, August 25, 2008

Seven-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers exerted little effort in thrashing the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats, 83-63, last night in the 8th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

The entire first half though was a bit surprise for the Lancers as the Wildcats delivered a barrage of points to tak15-14 lead late in the first period. Later, the Wildcats drained three triples of their 13-0 swing to take a 38-33 edge with 2:34 left in the second period.

But that proved to be their last hurrah as the Lancers responded with a 6-0 run to grab the lead, 39-38, for good.

6-foot-11 giant Gregory Slaughter, who was pulled out with still 6:11 left to play and the Lancers leading by 14 points, 67-53, topscored for UV with 20 points.

Ritchum Dennison and Edrian Lao had 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Lancers, who racked up their fifth straight win after a shocking opening day loss to the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors.

Sherwin Resilla paced the Wildcats with 29 points followed by Ronel Villaraba with 13 and RJ Reyes with 10. They further languished at the cellar without a win in four starts.

The scores

UV (83) - Slaughter 20, Dennison 13, Lao 11, Lanete 9, Villanil 9, Cincoflores 7, Cabahug 3, Lasala 2, Diputado 2, Mercader 2, Silva 2, Manigque 2, Tagalog 1

CIT (63) - Resilla 29, Villarba 13, Reyes 10, Lamosa 8, Molero 2, Lopez 2, Cabañero 2, De la Cerna 2 Halftime: 41-39

from Sunstar Cebu:

USC’s fifth
NO Llanto, no problem.

The University of San Carlos had a lot going against them without their main man Enrico Llanto but found a way to wriggle through the Junmar Fajardo-led University of Cebu Webmasters, 110-101, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Not having Llanto only became a driving force for the team because the players, who were content on playing behind his shadows, were forced to step up their game.

The Warriors finished the elimination round with a 5-2 win-loss record, while UC dropped to 2-3. Ramos scored 17 points, while Jansen Abella and Edward Pao scored 10 points each.

“I told the boys, that ball is not going to rebound by itself. I could not rebound it for you. You have to work hard for it. And with Llanto out because of a possible slip disc, I think it squeezed the talents out of our other players,” said head coach Jay Ramirez. “I expected Sam (Hermosa) and Banban (Giovanni Padillo) to lead the offense and they exceeded my expectations. With their leadership, the team really worked hard.”

Fajardo and all of his 6-foot-9 seem to be a daunting challenge for the Warriors but the 5-foot-10 Padillo and the 6-foot-2 Hermosa surmount UC’s pivot man rose to the occasion.

With 28 points each, Padillo and Hermosa overcame Fajardo, and his overstretched arms with their high-flying, acrobatic
and courageous antics giving USC a strong start they managed to carry through to the final buzzer.

Also pulling off an impressive finish was former University of the Visayas Green Lancer Mark Cantonao, who scored 15 points—all from the three-point lane—as USC entered the final half with a 53-38 lead.

USC managed to shake off Fajardo’s advances in the third period to continue leading the game, 82-65, in the final canto.

Turnover

The Webmasters then initiated a comeback in the final period, pushing the shots towards their go-to guy, Fajardo, from underneath the goal. Fajardo did not disappoint and scored 18 points and with the help of Raf Ramos to pull to within a point, 98-99, in the final two minutes of the game.

Hermosa then arrested the momentum with a putback from Padillo’s miss, to pad USC’s lead, 101-98. The Warriors’ bench was in a mad fit when Padillo was called for a backcourt violation after having been trapped by UC defenders.

However Ramos returned the favor after holding the inbound a little longer than he should to give possession back to the Warriors. Emel Rowe then sank a left-handed lay-up, before Gino Gallarde discharged a booming triple in the final 45 seconds. (MCB)

Warriors hold off Webmasters
By Gabby G. Malagar
Tuesday, August 26, 2008
The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters proved to everybody they are a fourth quarter team. But the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors showed they can win under pressure.

Games tomorrow

(Cebu Colsieum)

4:30 pm UC vs.USC (Jrs.)

6 pm CIT vs. USPF (Srs.)

The Warriors survived a huge challenge from the Webmasters to walk away with a 110-101 victory last Sunday in the 8th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

Pandemonium broke out when the Webmasters erased a 19-point deficit in the third quarter to threaten at 94-95 on a split charities by the California-raised Kevin Quilantang with still 3:25 left to play.

The Webmasters had another chance to tie the count, but Ralph Ramos could only make one free throw as they again pulled within a hairline, 98-99, entering the final two-minute zone of the contest.

In the ensuing sequence, Sam Jordan Hermosa hits a basket with 1:35 to go in the game to set up USC’s powerful finish. The win was virtually in the Warriors’ bag when they took a 106-100 on a booming triple by Gene Noel Gallarde from the right corner with only 37 ticks left before the final buzzer.

Hermosa and Giovanni Padillo each had 28 points, while Michael Cantonao chipped in 15 markers for the Warriors, who enjoyed a commanding 82-63 lead at the end of the third period. Joven Cid Cortes added 10 points as they improved their win-loss record to 4-2.

June Mar Fajardo scattered 38 points, but couldn’t make a difference as the Webmasters slipped to 2-3. Ramos finished with 17 points followed by Edward Pao and Janssen Abella with 10 markers apiece.

The scores

USC (110) - Padillo 28, Hermosa 28, Cantonao 15, Cortes 10, Gallarde 8, Rowe 7, Bercede 3, Joven 3, Igao 2, Bakker 2, Blanes 1, Codilla 1

The key statistic in the UC-USC game is Fajardo and the whole UC team had zero blocks and USC had 4. Fajardo had 38 points and 12 rebounds. He was limited to 5 points in the first half and scored a lot on free throws on questionable foul calls.

hey thadz, based on what i'm reading from your posts, i have a couple questions:

1. is the officiating in the cesafi really biased in favor of UC? why do you think this is so?

3. did GS really improved his game or is it just the case of UV not having anyone else to turn to?

hey thadz, based on what i'm reading from your posts, i have a couple questions:

1. is the officiating in the cesafi really biased in favor of UC? why do you think this is so?
it appears like that especially when uc met SWU, UV, USJ-R and USC. They got the win over SWU, USJ-R went to score a blowout while UV and USC had real scares at crunchtime before pulling the win

2. are you unimpressed with JF? does he really have potential or is he's just one big hype?
he got stamina, he trains hard(has a special practice before team scrimmage), his touch from the line is decent and he wans the ball in his hands. But I worry for him because with officiating biased for him, he gets away with a lot of offensive fouls and fouls that are not called when he gets those blocks. Maybe in Cebu, he can get away with that, but I worry for him when he goes to compete at a national level or even internationally because these incompetence by refs are actually translating into bad habits for him on the court

3. did GS really improved his game or is it just the case of UV not having anyone else to turn to?

Yes to both. UV had no one else to turn to so they turn to GS. But you have to admire how the kid took the challenge. He is making the most out of those chances

SWU suspends 5 players for the rest of the season. SWU management did not have to wait for CeSAFi to hand down the suspension for guards Richard Kwong and eliud Poligrates and forwards Eric Zanoria, Janno Nunez and Ely Armecin who violated a long-standing CeSAFi rule that disallows players to play in other tournaments outside the CeSAFi while the season is still ongoing. The quintet along with SWU reserve Roger Caytuna played in a tournament in Maslog, Danao City without the knowledge of SWU officials and a concerned CeSAFI fan informed the league about it. Zanoria, who has yet to play a game in his final year of eligibility, therefore ends his college basketball career with an ugly footnote. Kwong, a rookie, has warmed the Cobras bench prior to the suspension. nunez and Poligrates played in all 4 games of SWU prior to the suspension while Armecin played in 3. The suspension leaves the Cobras with only 10 men on the roster and are hard-pressed to make it to the semifinals. The Cobras will most likely meet UC in the quarterfinals

i think what thadz meant in his post is that UV doesn't have any decent big men that can compliment the game of lanete as well cris diputado who are good guards. of course there are still other players that can step up for UV. the likes of junjun lasala, phil mercader, villanil brothers and lao. however, they need a focal point and that's GS. GS provided enough attention to attract the defense so that their guards can manuever and penetrate. just like what the previous big men of UV did before. they don't have likes of rino berame, mike luga and morsie akad who can provide instant offense. In fact there was a mutt ang jeff tandem of UV before. ronald bucao and JR Quiñahan who blended so well that it gave UV some of it's 7 CESAFI titles.

Whats your predictions? do you think slaughter will be ripe enough to be a back-up center for the 2011 FIBA-Asia. He would be 23 or 24 years old by that time ? and in the PBA ?

BTW, when will fajardo and slaughter be eligible for the PBA?

If you meant EJ Feihl, I'd say both GS and JF have better potential. Marlou in his prime? That is subject to debate.

yes. but it also bothers they are in the top 3 most turnover-prone players in CeSAFI 2008

GS mentioned he might go PBL after next season(2009). That should do him good as long as he does not get caught up in that 'commercial' hiccup in basketball. I'm sure JF and GS will make the PBL. Heck, if Quinahan made it, hen for sure these 2 will. JF should learn to play honest defense though without help from the refs:D

Both are currently in their second year. Fajardo is actually a CeSAFI rookie while Slaughter is on his second year. JF has 4 more playing years left and GS 3 more.

what I meant was UV had no one else on the block so they turn to GS. They missed Berame, Luga, Mepaña and Arda. Of their current big men, one can only count on GS and Lao at center and Lasala at forward. These 3 log major minutes for UV because they are really short of big men now.

point taken..

ill check if its the regular season he played in or was it the Partner's Cup?

SWU proves there is life after the self-imposed suspensions. Earlier today, they just scored the most lopsided win of CeSAFI 2008, 103-45 over the pathetic CIT Wildcats. That's a whopping 58 point margin. SWU is still 7-deep at least.

emel rowe is averaging 7.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.1 blocks and is not living up to the hype. What amuses me however is the fact that opposing teams put too much attention and defensive energy on a guy averaging the above numbers thereby forgetting about the other guys at USC. UC limited Rowe to 7 points in their game but failed to contain Sam Hermosa and Giovanni Padillo who each had 28 in that game and Michael Cantonao who had 15 points all from beyond the arc

its pretty unfair to say that the kid isnt living upto the hype - then in the next sentence u highlight the attention he gets .. i think its obvious hes met the expectations when teams respect him enough that they all collapse whenever he catchs the ball

I think as long as Rowe is on a winning team, that will give good feedback on him.

However, sooner, or later, he will have to show what he can do on an individual level consistently, either in the CESAFI, or in the PBL for him to have a good chance of making it to the PBA.

The key, is to have good individual stats, and at the same time help his team win games. Both, not just either.

the real defintion of a gd/great player is a player who makes the players around him better....
If people are surprised why emels gettin so much attention maybe cause his creating havoc without even scoring

I don't believe that much in intangibles. A lot of other local players have the same stats have Rowe, so what makes him special, then? Just because he's tall and a Fil-Foreigner?

If you say it is an intangible, then the danger there is that it makes things subjective. You're introducing subjectivity to the observation.

I think, though, that Rowe will eventually prove himself better somewhere down the line.

u can have better stats then emel but it doesnt mean ur better....jus cause his stats are low doesnt suggest his not living up to the hype
and being tall does help you being special because u affect things other guys cant when ur not at that height especially defensively...which dont get recorded in the stat sheet...being a intimidation in the paint or whereever doesnt get recorded on the stat sheet
u may say its subjective...but whats there to argue...usc has a winning record...usc's playing well....alot of players on the usc roster are playin well...im not sayin its solely due to emel...but emel has made an impact...and a winning one at usc...he doenst put up much shots which may suggest teams are lockin down on him n he moves the ball around so that usc have good higher percentage shots....playin under a system he prob wouldnt stacked up the assists

were talking basketball and if u aint tall = ur short :P which is frowned upon in most basketball establishments . in college skill development is more important but but at the end of the day he's 6'4 he demands attention the development will come after ..

but yea im sure that he will prove himself further along the track .. otherwise he be stuck playin center at usc.

the real statisticians tally items called hustle points and even categorize these into types and these includes intimidating the shots without getting the block or the turnover, tapping the ball so that it leads to a steal by a teammate, causing the offensive player to turn the ball over without getting the steal or any stat. Sadly, the CeSAFi does not do these.

by hype I meant, people expect somebody scoring 20 or 30 each night, not anything else. But as ive written, despite not getting the numbers, you get a lot of the defensive attention and I'd rather see that and Sam or Van scoring big instead because Rowe get's too much of the attention and focus on defense.

But I think we agree that somehow, especially for those people in the PBL and the PBA who do not have the benefit of watching the games on tape yet, numbers matter. CeSAFI is lucky coz I heard Basketball TV will provide coverage starting in the quarterfinals(Im not too sure maybe it starts semifinals), coz by then, throw out the numbers.

In order to intimidate a shot, you should be good shot blocker in the first place. If you are not a good shot blocker, then I doubt if anybody will be intimidated by you.

A tapped ball is considered an interception, and although it has not been highlighted lately, I think it still is being recorded on some college games. If you tap a ball, and gain possession, it is considered a steal. If you tap a ball, and do not gain possession, you end up disrupting perhaps a play and eating more off the shot clock. I agree it is an important stat, though, that needs to be tracked also like steals.

so your sayin if ur gonna drive the ball n u see a guy who possibly can take a charge or whose tall who may block your shot (doesnt have to b a gd shot blocker)...you wouldnt think twice about driving it?? if u think twice that intimidation...n being a player with experience just cause u know the guy may not b a gd shot blocker but the guy in the middle of the lane is tall and big u think twice about goin further to the basket...n cause u arnt getting closer to the ring ur percentage of making the shot is less and just by him standing there allows ur teammates to recover..so saying solely you need to be a shot blocker to be intimidating is totally wrong...u can be intimidating jus simply by taking a step off your man and helping out you teammate

when you tap a ball and your team gets possession, its a steal but the guy tapping the ball does not get the steal in his stat sheet all the time coz it could go to a teammate who completed it. But the tap in itself is a hustle point.

Good shotblockers intimidate an offensive player but its not just good shotblockers who do intimidate the offense. You get players who are so good at the art of drawing a charge, or even when a defensive man just comes in for help, it changes things.

It depends on the skill level of the big guy. We've seen a couple of tall players here, too. Francis De Leon (6'9"), Chris Suguitan (6'8"), Diomar Facun (6'7"), all these guys are taller than the average Philipipine Center, but their heights have not been enough to make them good shotblockers, or help them intimidate on defense.

On the other hand, 6'5" Nonoy Baclao intimidates a lot on defense because he blocks 2-3 blocks a game. You need to be able to block some shots, so you can intimidate some more shots.

From The Freeman:

Panthers, Greywolves clash in CESAFI today

Thursday, September 4, 2008

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers and the Don Bosco College Greywolves, both carrying only one victory, will clash in the lone collegiate match today in the 8th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

Games today
(Cebu Coliseum)
4:30 pm CIT vs. DBTC (Jrs.)

6 pm USP-F vs. DBTC (Srs.)

Nothing is really at stake for the Panthers and the Greywolves as they already lost their campaigns for the top four spot. But one big thing to be gained in their duel is that the winner will avoid a quarterfinal showdown with the second seeded University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.

The Panthers will rely on their speed and quickness to offset their inconsistency in field shooting. And if they have a lethal weapon that could keep them into the winning track, it’s none other than their fastbreak.

Randy Avila, Dennis Tabada and Jordan Bardilas are the three USPF guards to watch out for because they are going to baffle the opposition in a blitz. If taken for granted, the likes of Jeffrey Laurente, Elleison Rivera and Moncrif Rogado can also be dangerous.

Compared to the Jaguars, the Greywolves have superior outside shooters with special mention of the Ricmar Perturbos, a big man but is a certified 3-point artist.

Prior to the USPF-Don Bosco showdown, the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens will try to officially grab the fourth spot when they take on the Junior Greywolves.

As usual, slippery playmaker Mark Jayven Tallo will be the marked man for the Wildkittens, while the Junior Greywolves have plenty of towers to contain in the likes of Rodrick John Villahermosa, Marion Joseph Bollozos, Danilo Kelso Belangel and John Eleazar Ruiz. (GGM)

Saving his best for last
Iste Sesante Leopoldo
Cebu Daily News

September 08, 2008

University of Cebu’s Carl Jeanette Malazarte saved his best performance for last.

Playing in his final Milo Little Olympics stint, the 16-year-old Webmaster made sure that he left a legacy as he set new records in the 3,000-meter steeple chase and 1,000-meter run in Day Two on Sunday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The Palarong Pambansa silver medalist Malazarte broke the seven-year-old record of Gilbert Luterte’s of 11 minutes and 55 seconds in steeple chase by logging in a 10-minute and 58-second mark.

His day would not end there as he continued his brilliant performance by setting a new record in the 1,500-meter run with a 4:30 time. Last year, he set the best record at 4:38.

Although Malazarte’s hopes of getting a gold medal in the next Palarong Pambansa would not materialize because of his impending graduation next year, he said he is still happy that he was able to contribute a record-breaking performance for UC in his last year in the Milo tilt.

UC’s powerhouse athletics team was at its best form on Sunday as Vlessica Jagna and Jee Ann Racoma chipped in more golds in the secondary girls division.

Jagna got two gold medals in the 800-meter and 3,000-meter steeple chase, while Racoma added two in the 400-meter and 110-meter hurdles events.

Junrey Andales gave UC one more gold in the 400-meter hurdles in the secondary boys division.

Adding to UC’s gold medal haul were Sarah Napoles, who won in the long jump event and Jasper Basister and Leslie Abad, who has one gold each in the discuss throw event.

Still on top

With a total of 9 golds collected on Sunday, UC remains on top with a total of 14 golds in its bag going into next weekend’s competition.

Abellana National High School ended their gold medal drought with Emilyn Lastimoso’s win in the 200-meter dash in the secondary girls division.

In the elementary division, Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) is currently tied with Quiot Elementary School in the gold medal tally with three each.

SHS-J’s bid for more golds on Sunday went futile as Quiot’s Adela Canillo and Bebs Angelou Odac grabbed one each in the 800-meter run and 110-meter hurdles event.

Fajardo vs. Slaughter in Cesafi All-Stars

THE battle of the giants will be the crowd-drawer for this weekend’s All-Star Games of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) as celebrated centers Junmar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter anchor the two teams competing in the weekend spectacle.

By the power of the right of suffrage, University of Cebu’s 6-foot-9 pivot man Fajardo and the University of the Visayas’ 6-foot-11 tower Slaughter, were voted by fans to lead the Dark and Light teams competing in the All-Star weekend.

Fajardo will lead the Dark team, where he will join the other players voted to be in the starting five namely Armand Ponce, Luther Justiniani and Jan Malinao of University of San Jose Recoletos and UC’s Edward Pao.

They will be joined by USPF’s Randy Avila, Don Bosco’s Rodulfo Enterina and Celso Colegado, USJR’s Jabe Delfino and Lyndon Gudez.

Slaughter, on the other hand, will lead the Light squad, where he will be joined by fellow Lancers Von Lañete and Junjun Lasala and Southwestern University stalwarts Alfred Belande and Clifford Maguate in the first five.

Completing the lineup are University of San Carlos’ Joven Cortes, Giovanni Padillo, Emel Rowe and Mike Cantonao and UV’s Chris Diputado, Bonifer Sendrijas and Harold Cincoflores.

For the fans

Since the All-Star weekend is all about the supporters, Cesafi gave the fans the power to put in their favorite players in the first five of the teams through a voting system.

The Light team will be coached by UV’s Elmer “Boy” Cabahug, while USJ-R’s head coach Edito Salacot will call the shots for the Dark squad.

Apart from the game, there will also be a three-point shootout, where Cesafi’s best battle a much-hyped, three-point king Chester Cokaliong.

Cantonao, Lañete, Belande, Lyndon Gudez, Jansen Abella, Don Bosco’s Ricmar Perturbos and USPF’s Jeffrey Laurente will be gunning for the honors.

There will also be the usual slamdunk competition.

In the absence of last year’s champion, Eric Zanoria, the title is up for grabs among Slaughter, Rowe, Junjun Lasala of UV, Pao and Kevin Quilantang of UC, Abulaiz Sulaiman of USJ-R and Elwin Durano of USP-F.

Meanwhile, UC’s Junmar Fajardo was named the Cesafi Player of the Week after leading the Webmasters to two wins last week. The giant from Pinamungahan, Cebu, averaged 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks in their wins over CIT and USPF

i think he can jump. 6'11" is not that tall as what you think and you still need to jump to get a rebound or dunk the ball. though you have the edge against shorter opponents since you don't have to jump that high.
you haven't seen him dunk in a game? he already made several on play dunks during games. though not as powerful as dwight's dunks. :D

the suspension of their 5 players may have caused the season for the cobras. eric zanoria is one hell of a scorer and they badly needed that in their game against the webmasters. and so goes the other 4 players, who could have contributed in one or another to help augment the team's chances in moving into the semis. sad to say, that's their fate. SWU management should look the activities of their players to avoid the same incident in the coming years.

if they can hurdle USC in the semis, UV is bound to make it 8 in a row. USJR maybe playing good basketball in the elims but the Lancers will not be denied in their quest for 8.

Game today:

Cebu Coliseum

5 p.m. - USC vs. USPF (juniors)

The season-long gallant stand of the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras finally found its waterloo after they were upended by the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 73-76, in the quarterfinals of the seniors division in the Cesafi basketball tournament Tuesday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win completed the semifinal cast with the latter squaring off against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the seven-time champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers battling the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors.

The Webmasters' path to the semifinals was no cakewalk as they had to fend off a tenacious Cobras squad that was determined to extend their season for one more game.

Undermanned but not overwhelmed, the Cobras turned to their lean crew led by swingmen Alfred Belande and Chris Litorja, point guard Ardd Django and forward Clifford Maguate to post a nine-point lead, 55-46, after unleashing a 16-6 run at the start of the third canto.

UC kept its composure and responded with aplomb, unfurling a 13-2 run behind the streaky Jannsen Abella to retake the lead, 59-57, heading into the final stanza.

6-foot-9 center Junmar Fajardo kept the Webmasters' roll going as he scored UC's first eight points to tow them to a 69-65 lead but Django kept the Cobras close with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.

Belande put SWU in front, 70-69, after capping off a daring steal with a fastbreak layup with 1:06 remaining in the match.

The Webmasters as they took advantage of an offensive rebound by whipping a pass to an open Kevin Quilantang in the left corner, who drained the go-ahead three-pointer to peg the score at 72-69, with 38.4 ticks left on the clock.

The Cobras had two chances to take the lead but Litorja missed two three-point tries on the next possession.

Fajardo calmly drained two free-throws with 7.8 seconds remaining to put them ahead by four points before Django hit a trifecta from the left flank to cut the lead to just one with less than a second left in the match.

Kelvin Juliane pegged the final tally with two more makes from the charity stripe as Django missed a desperate three-point attempt from halfcourt at the final buzzer.

Fajardo wound up with 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks.

CeSAFI All-Stars 2008, September 13, 2008 @ the New Cebu Coliseum

Damnit! I missed the slam dunk competitions, no thanks to the organizers they scheduled it as the first event and preceding a long and boring 3 round 3 point shootout.

Anyways congratulations to Univ of Southern Philippines Foundation rookie Panther Elwin Durano for winning the slam dunk crown, I actually expected him to win that one.

In the 3 point shootout, UV's Vonn Lanete had 18 and SWU's Chris Litorja had 17 in the first round but USPF team captain Moncrief Rogado stole the show in the 2nd and 3ed rounds to emerge as this year's 3-point shootout titlist.

All Star Games:
Light Team(UV, USC, SWU)

Starters: UV's Greg Slaughter(C, 6-11), Junjun Lasala(F, 6-2) and Vonn Lanete(PG, 5-10), SWU's Alfred Belande(G/F 6-2) & Cleford Maguate(C/F, 6-4)

Rest of team: UV's Boniber Sendrijas(PF, 6-2), Ritchum Dennison(SG, 5-10), Chris Diputado(PG, 5-9), USC's Jun Cantonao(SG, 5-10), Sam Hermosa(SF, 6-0), Paul Joven(PG, 5-10), Giovanni Padillo(SG, 5-10), Emel Rowe(F/C, 6-4), & Cid Cortes(C/F, 6-0)

Dark Team(USJ-R, UC, USPF, DBTC)
Starters: USJ-R's Manny Gabas(C, 6-4), Armand Ponce(PG,5-9), & Luther Justiniani(SG, 6-2), UC's Junmar Fajardo(C, 6-9) & Edward Pao(PF, 6-3)

Rest of team: USJ-R's Jan Malinao(F/C, 6-3), Lyndon Gudez(SG, 5-11), Jabe Delfino(F, 6-3), & Kurt Amores(C, 6-4), UC's Janssen Abella(SG, 5-11), & Kevin Quilantang(G/F, 6-2), DBTC's Ricmar Perturbos(C/F, 6-3), Celso Colegado Jr.(PG, 5-6), & Rodolfo Enterina III(PG, 5-9), & USPF's Randy Avila(PG, 5-7)

Light Team wins All-Star Game 76-72.

Mythical Five All-Stars:
C 6-11 Greg Slaughter(UV)
PF 6-9 Junmar Fajardo(UC)
SF 6-4 John Emel Rowe(USC)
SG 6-2 Luther Justiniani(USJ-R)
PG 5-10 Vonn Harry Lanete(UV)

MVP: Greg Slaughter(UV)

Play of the game(3rd Quarter):

Emel Rowe drives off Jan Malinao in the middle, Dark team's defense collapses on him, hands a pass to Slaughter who makes a two-handed jam right in Fajardo's face, and one!(on succeeding play, Rowe made another lob pass--more like an alley-oop attempt, Greg Slaughter converts but would have been the play of the game if he was able to slam that hard)
