"We start practicing Jan. 11, so our import should be here by then,"
coach Siot Tanquingcen told Malaya Business Insight yesterday.

Tanquingcen said 7-foot Chris Alexander, who powered Ginebra to the
2008 Fiesta Conference title, is among the foreign players being
considered.

"He is included in our list, but we are trying to
carefully study all the candidates for us to come up with the best
possible choice," he stated.

Do you still remember how Alfrancis' Tanduay played before?

yes. it was run and gun really with tanduay but he changed his style with slr because his run and gun mode with tanduay was not suited to the personnel he had then with slr.

but i believe that if he had williams and reyes then, he will have a more than realistic chance of winning a conference title the way fernandez was able to snatch one.

before becoming slr's coach, slr did not win their first title until chua arrived as the team's consultant/assistant deputy.

Chua has a good record if he is handling a good team (2003 Sta. Lucia and the conference before he left he had a above 500 winning percentage aside from his tanduay stint). Chua's record dipped when (the tanduay has depleted because of deportation issues and the salary cap issues for Sta Lucia back then when they have a often injured Kd, Dennis and God knows the hardworking Marlou Aquino)

Barangay Ginebra undoubtedly the most popular team in the PBA with AlFrancis Chua being the team consultant, the exit of Jong Uichico as Co-Head Coach, the return of 7`0`` behemoth import Chris Alexander, the arrival of new faces such as Raymundo and Ababou as well as the departure of long mainstays Ronald Tubid, high-flying JC Intal and Rookie Reil Cervantes.

More Personnel changes could happen.

According to our beloved Commissioner, Ginebra is still the crowd favorite followed by Petron which is the 2nd most liked team and then B-Meg and Talk 'n are fighting for the 3rd most liked team. His basis is the Gate Receipt last Conference.

Here is the Commissioner's statement:

"Crowd Favorite pa rin ang Ginebra, ikalawa ang Petron, naglalaban sa ikatlo ang Bmeg at Talk N' Text." Yan ay base sa Gate Receipt last Conference !"

Going on, I was surprised that B-Meg was not listed as the number crowd favorite team because if I'm not mistaken their fans were able to make a gate attendance record in one of their games last Conference. But then again, that was just in one game. That was still an inferior gate attendance record compared to Ginebra's. The Ginebra fans perhaps were more consistent in supporting their team. This just goes to show that Ginebra's charisma is really on a different and higher level.

NBA veteran to beef up Ginebra

By Joaquin Henson The Philippine Star Updated February 27, 2012 12:00 AM 1 comment to this post

MANILA, Philippines - With import Chris Alexander unable to dominate like he used to, NBA veteran Jackson Vroman will instead take on the cudgels as the man in the middle for Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. The 6-10, 230-pound California-born star, who became a Lebanese naturalized citizen to play at the 2009 FIBA-Asia and 2010 FIBA World Championships, is scheduled to arrive in Manila this morning.

Vroman, 30, would’ve flown in earlier but according to his agent, lost his passport and had to apply for a replacement. Alexander has played three games for the Kings, averaging 14 points and 20.1 rebounds this season. Each of the three contests was close with Ginebra beating Petron, 84-82 and Rain Or Shine, 89-88 and losing a 76-74 decision to Alaska. Against the Aces, Alexander shot 3-of-7 from the field and 1-of-4 from the line in 42 minutes. In the squeaker over the Painters in Dubai last Friday, Alexander fouled out with two minutes to go and was hardly a factor.

Alexander, 31, led Ginebra to its last title in the 2007-08 Fiesta Conference. His form today is a far cry from how he creamed the opposition four years ago. He was reportedly informed of Vroman’s arrival yesterday. Vroman was in the wish list of at least two other PBA clubs looking for an import switch.

What makes Vroman a potential game changer is his versatility as a Dirk Nowitzki play-alike with the interior presence of a Dennis Rodman. His Iowa State coach Wayne Morgan once described him as “a more offensively talented version of Rodman.” As a senior at Iowa State (the same school where Alexander played) in 2003-04, Vroman averaged 13.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists while hitting .564 from the floor and .507 from the stripe. He finished his two-year Iowa State stay ranked No. 2 in field goal percentage and No. 9 in blocked shots in the all-time standings.

Vroman, whose father Brett played at UCLA and the Utah Jazz in the NBA, was picked on the second round by the Chicago Bulls in the 2004 draft. He suited up for Phoenix and New Orleans in four NBA seasons, averaging 3.3 points in 87 career outings. As an NBA rookie with the Suns in 2004-05, he registered career highs of 17 points against San Antonio and 13 rebounds against Charlotte. From the NBA, Vroman barnstormed Europe where his father played 12 years as an import. He saw action in Spain and Lithuania before taking his sneakers to Asia where his basketball odyssey brought him to Iran, Lebanon, South Korea and China.

In May 2009, Vroman accepted Lebanese citizenship to play in the FIBA-Asia and FIBA World Championships. He towed Lebanon to the Final Four of the FIBA-Asia Championships in Tianjin, China, in 2009, averaging 17.1 points and 8.4 rebounds in eight contests. At the World Championships, Vroman hit at a 14.8 clip in five outings. Vroman also had a stint as an import with the Iranian club Mahram which he led to the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup titles in 2009 and 2010, averaging 24 points and 8.5 rebounds in 14 total games.

Known as a free spirit, Vroman attended five high schools. He used to cut high school classes in Utah and ride a bus to take him to a downtown gym to play basketball. After his parents divorced, his mother sent him and sister Lauren from Alaska to Utah to live with their father when he was in Grade 8. His father is now a counselor of juveniles in Salt Lake City and Lauren became the bass guitarist for the punk rock band Lithium.

At Iowa State, Vroman survived an unstable family environment to live his dream as a basketball star. He dyed his hair an assortment of colors like yellow, blue, maroon and black and was arrested for drunk driving and marijuana possession. “They were really hard things to go through at the time but I’m fortunate to go through them in college,” he recalled quoted by writer Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic. The campus struggles toughened Vroman for the life ahead and strengthened his resolve to be the best basketball player he can be.

Coro once remarked that Vroman is a poor man’s version of Oklahoma City Thunder’s Nick Collison, “expending relentless energy on the court and a dynamic personality off it.”

Ginebra’s next game is against Powerade at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Sunday so Vroman has a week to acclimatize before seeing action in his PBA debut.

I think its a great move by ginebra to replace alexander with vroman as early as now. The new import at least has considerable time to adjust to ginebra system with 6 game remaining and 1 week before there next game vs powerade. Alexander is no longer the agile and well condition player once he was.His timing is off defensively{fouling out early with plenty of time in the 4th vs ros} , his offensive move is very limited and because of that the ginebra offense is very stagnant at times with the opposing team just playing one on one defense on him and waiting for him to kick the ball out knowing that he has limited post move.Mr. toothpick is still the great rebounder we once know but his offensive game has already gone long. GINEBRA OF 2008 dont need him to score that much because helterbrand, menk and caguioa is still at their prime. They just need him to dominate the board and control the paint. But the Ginebra of 2012 is far more different now,jay jay is no longer the player once he was, the same with mark although both of them is still productive, they our really past their prime.Even menk.maybe in his last season of playing career,is no longer the same menk that we all know.Ginebra of 2012 needs an import who can dominate both on offense and in defense, and thats what JACKSON VROMAN can give the team what they need for. VROMAN is a relentless rebounder and very tough player which I think ginebra fans will love to have.Adding to that he has a good offensive move around the basket and has a good perimiter shot that can be useful for ginebra's pick and roll. I think him and douthit will be the barometer of import in the current commisioners cup until we know who's import will replace omar samhan of talk and text which is reportedly has an acl injury. But who ever talk n text will bring,I think ginebra is in good hands with Vroman.

I'd rather see Art than Al if that's the case.Art prolly was the defensive coordinator of the Kings. He'd prolly be Coach Thibs for them if that happens. Too bad Coach Ato doesn't play small ball too effectively (he plays it much but he can't get things consistent with a Cabagnot+Lutz or maybe a Yeo at the three) and Coach Al's more of a post-guy person (Menk and Alvarado in Tanduay; Marlou and Dennis in SLR)

no problem if bgk abandons the small-ball. they were awesome nwei during the time reavis, menk, and hatfield were their starting frontcourt. and maybe, just maybe rico, rico, and kerby can play better with a bigman system.

Can we conclude that Jax became the David Noel part 2??

During the concluded elimination round of Commisioner's Cup, I admit I'm one of
the people who admired the game of Ginebra's 6'10 COOL import Jackson
Vroman. He's all around type of game fits the game of the well-loved
team. He can run the fastbreaks, he can slam it home, he can have his
own block party and lastly he can share the ball. AT THE SAME TIME, we
saw how this behemoth argues with the refs all the time, I have a
chance watch a game of BGK against TNT in Courtside seats, and I must
say, he's like a grade schooler because of his temper. He has always
something to say to the referees. But still, I thought that he's hot
tempered attitude will not be a problem if he continues his brilliant
game.

Caguioa prefers natural healing to surgery

IF only Mark Caguioa can decide on the fate of his eye injury, he certainly won’t favor operation.

A month after fracturing the orbital bone of his right eye, Caguioa is still in a limbo as far as his injury is concerned.

“Ang hirap siguro kung operation, kasi delikado. Buti sana kung paa or tuhod, walang problema. Mahirap na kapag sa mata,’’ said the recently named 2012 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup Best Player of the Conference.

Ginebra taps versatile NBA vet

MANILA, Philippines - Blanked out of the finals in the last two conferences, Barangay Ginebra hopes to bounce back with a former Atlanta Hawks guard from UCLA as import in the season-ending Governors Cup starting May 20.

Cedric Bozeman, 29, was recruited to bolster the Kings whose fortunes
took a dip in the recent Commissioner’s Cup after Mark Caguioa, voted
Best Player of the Conference, suffered a fractured right orbital bone
in a playoff against B-Meg for the second outright semifinals slot.
Caguioa sat out the entire semifinals and Ginebra was eliminated, 3-1,

Scouting the Governors’ Cup imports, part 1: Air 21, Alaska, B-MEG, Barako Bull, Ginebra

He’s described as very comfortable playing point guard, though his role in the PBA will probably be far from that. With a floor general’s mentality, his passing could be a real strength this conference, alongside the usual scoring that imports generally provide. He could be a real threat to put up triple-doubles, so watch for that as well. He’s a good defender and a nice “glue guy”, so he should be a solid pick-up for the Kings.

The List: Top 10 Players in Ginebra History

The team has gone through many names over the years: Gilbey’s Gin, Ginebra San Miguel, Añejo, Gordon’s Gin, and finally, officially, Barangay Ginebra. Still, through all these, the spirit stays the same: Never say die.

In this week’s installment of The List, we count down the 10 greatest players in the history of the PBA’s most popular franchise.

But before we get to the Top 10, here are some honorable mentions:

Francis Arnaiz

(1984-1986)

The PBA’s original “Mr. Clutch” was Robert Jaworski’s bosom buddy, and the duo was responsible for the team’s sudden rise in popularity upon their transfer to the franchise. A mestizo looker from Ateneo, he was Vince Hizon before Vince Hizon. He retired abruptly in 1986, just before Ginebra won its first PBA title, but he remains in the heart of old-school fans.

In sparkling return, Mark Caguioa makes the glasses look good

Midway through the first period of Barangay Ginebra’s game against Air 21, a familiar figure walked to the scorer’s table. Except for a pair of protective eyewear, the Gin Kings faithful saw the same old Mark Caguioa back on the court after a scary bout with an eye injury, and he was there ahead of schedule.

“He’s a fighter,” said Ginebra assistant coach Caidic. “I wasn’t surprised to see him out there even though hindi pa siya 100-percent fit. But his mere presence out there gives us inspiration.”

Ababou’s benching baffles, angers Ginebra fans in loss to B-MEG

Where in the world was Dylan Ababou?

The star rookie remained glued to the bench for 48 minutes, and all he could do was watch as his Barangay Ginebra Kings succumbed to the B-MEG Llamados, 96-88, in Sunday’s night’s Manila Clasico showdown.

Ababou wasn’t injured, meaning the decision to bench him rested solely on the Ginebra coaching staff. In a report by AKTV’s Jessica Mendoza during the game, she said the coaches decided to use John Wilson instead of Ababou for defensive purposes.

PBA legend Jojo Lastimosa, who was doing analyst work for the television, questioned the decision. “Magaling din naman dumepensa si Ababou ah. At ‘di hamak namang mas marunong siyang maglaro kesa kay Wilson,” said Lastimosa.

Wilson ended up playing a total of just eight minutes, going scoreless and grabbing two rebounds. In his first game this tournament, against Air 21, Ababou scored nine points in 23 minutes and helped Ginebra to victory.

Ababou’s benching earned for Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen the ire of Ginebra fans.

“Bad coaching by Coach Siot tonight. He should have used Dylan Ababou,” wrote Paolo Miguel Cedeño on Twitter.

“J. Wilson didn’t contribute a single point. I can’t remember a game that Ababou scoring zero. Wrong move, Siot,” wrote Jo Nio.

“Hindi ko maintindihan ang laro ng Ginebra bakit ganun rotation? Who’s better, Canaleta or Ababou?” asked Jaypee Miguel.

At least one executive of San Miguel Corporation, which owns Ginebra, also wondered why Ababou remained on the bench.

“For those who are asking, Dylan was not injured or sick tonight. And yes, I’m asking the same question as all of you are,” wrote SMC official Noli Eala on Twitter.

Ginebra Coach On Way Out?
By WAYLON GALVEZ
May 28, 2012, 9:05pm

MANILA, Philippines --- Barangay Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen’s decision not to use one of his players during Sunday’s game against B-Meg may cost him his job.

Tanquingcen benched rookie forward Dylan Ababou and this reportedly did not sit well with team officials who have now questioned his coaching credentials.

According to a source who is privy to management thinking, some team officials in the San Miguel sports echelons wondered how the coach could have missed using Ababou who is not in any way suffering from any injury.

The same source said Tanquingcen’s failure to use Ababou was “uncacceptable.” Some also used the word “mysterious.”

Officials said losing to B-Meg was not a problem, it’s the way Tanquingcen handled the team.

Under these circumstances, it’s almost a given that Tanquingcen, who has won three PBA championships and was runnerup twice, is on the way out as the source who hinted about management’s disappointment oftentimes uses the media to presage personnel movement involving players and coaches.

The source even mentioned some possible replacements such as assistant coach Marco Januz Sauler, and former Sta. Lucia Realty and Tanduay coach Alfrancis Chua.

When contacted yesterdayTanquingcen admitted that he lost track of the situation and also wondered how he could have missed using Ababou who played in Ginebra’s 103-85 win versus Air21, where he played 23 minutes and scored nine points with three rebounds.

“I know it’s not a popular decision, I actually asked myself why I didn’t use him,” said Tanquingcen.

But Tanquingcen justified his decision, citing the pressure some coaches face.

“Going into the game, you can only try to pick and chose the players you want to use. (And regarding my decisions, I have to ), live with it.”

Tanquingcen explained that Ababou share playing minutes at the small forward position with fellow rookie Allein Maliksi and veteran Nino Canaleta, who played 16 and 18 minutes respectively against B-Meg finishing with seven points each.

In Ginebra’s opening game versus Air21, Maliksi played 16 minutes with 13 points, while Canaleta was scoreless in eight minutes.

“Sometimes, the minutes of players get mixed up. Like our import Cedric Bozeman, he can play 1-2-3 positions. Mike Cortez plays the point guard but he can also play the 2. As much as I want to please all the players, that my dilemma, sometimes I can’t do that.”

Tanquingcen understands also that there’s a possibility for him to be replaced, particularly if Ginebra fails to do well this conference.

“I’ve been in that position, so I know it can happen again. For me, I’ll always try to do my best each game to help the team win. I management wants to replace me, that’s not in my control anymore,” said Tanquingcen.

Tanquingcen on way out?

DUE to some very questionable decisions of late, Siot Tanquingcen’s job as head coach of Ginebra may have taken a very serious hit.

An informed source told Malaya Business Insight yesterday that San Miguel Corp. basketball operations chief Robert Non is set to recommend a coaching change in the Kings camp, with current assistant coaches Juno Sauler and Alfrancis Chua as main candidates.

“Within the week Mr. Non will submit his recommendation to Mr. (SMC chief Ramon) Ang,” the insider related.

and he's kinda stingy with his rotation. He'd play 8 guys MAX. With a talented roster (plus the fact that the team needs to utilize its young players), that's just a no-no.

BTW, Ginebra's gonna wear throwback jerseys on July 8 in honor of Sen. Jaworski's jersey retirement. Hopefully they continue the trend of throwbacks. I wanna see the Kings wear those old school Gordon's Gin jerseys.

Ginebra fans are famishing and starving because the team are on a long interval on winning a championship.

4 yrs to be exact on a title dearth for a team that has a huge following and a multitude of fan base.

but why are you posting nonsense like that trade transaction ..... just air your grievance straightforward if you are that disappointed as you have that right. All I can say unlike previous games Ginebra played flat vs sister team BMeg ....

Won't matter. Rain or Shine has zero fans anyway. Ginebra/BMEG crowd will of course pull the numbers. So in this record-setting conference (big ratings/attendance in the new era) 2 finals will suck popularity wise (POW v TNT in All Flip, and this one in the 3rd conference)-- i guess the regular season/playoffs numbers (again, ratings/attendance) are too big anyway it doesn't matter if the Finals numbers suck.

Ginebra Fans' Battle Cry - NEVER SAY DIE

Another heart breaking loss, Another heart felt season ending for my beloved Ginebra. Another deep breath and most of all another long wait for the next season to come. Imaginary images of our players still contending for the Championships and Mark Caguioa finally holding an MVP award. These are the thoughts running through my mind.

Sunday Night Madness: Caguioa won the MVP Award

It was a great Sunday Night for me. Mark Caguioa finally got his Deserved MVP award and the BMEG Llamados lost to an Inspired Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. It was a proud moment for us Fans and Caguioa himself as well. Being there was like watching a live Bar Fight, all the nominees are well deserving for the award.
