I beg to disagree. Imports >>>>>> Locals. When was the last time a local player averaged 20 ppg, and 15 rpg in the PBA?

all I can say is that his SAGA continues .....
with due respect to namamangha, it seems the suggestion of an old post by a IBN forumer seems right, this guy really needs a psychiatrist. His problem is more mental .... he is gifted physically, very athletic and had "US Training".
Let's just pray for him and hope he does live-up to his potential .... many dreampt that he'll be the FIRST homegrown full-blooded Filipino in the NBA.
I still believe he is not pure HYPE .... it is just that he has not matured mentally and emotionally.
the pressure of High Expectations on him delivering immediately did him in.

Slam dunk champ to outshine NBA vets?
By Joaquin Henson (http://www.philstar.com/ArticleListByAuthorName.aspx?AuthorName=By+Joaquin +Henson) (The Philippine Star)
Updated January 27, 2011 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Two NBA veterans are now in town to showcase their skills as imports in the PBA second conference starting Feb. 18 but all eyes will be on a high-flying slam dunk champion who arrives tomorrow from Lebanon to suit up for Meralco.
Eddie Basden, who played for the Chicago Bulls in 2005-06, was signed up by Alaska while Rain Or Shine’s Hassan Adams saw action for the New Jersey Nets in 2006-07 and the Toronto Raptors in 2008-09.
Basden is now in Cebu playing for the Aces in a three-day pocket tournament with Meralco, Powerade and M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños. Alaska beat the Tigers, 92-81, in the opener last Tuesday but coach Tim Cone said he couldn’t test Basden in one-on-one situations because Powerade played zone the entire game. Titus Ivory, the first import to plane in two weeks ago, played for Powerade. Ivory, 31, is from Penn State and has campaigned in Italy, Germany, Lithuania, Belgium and Germany.
In another game last Tuesday, Meralco blasted Lhuillier, 116-100, despite playing without Asi Taulava, on loan to Smart Gilas, and import Tony Danridge, the 2009 US NCAA slam dunk king due to report tomorrow. Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio said Mac-Mac Cardona, Chris Ross and Sol Mercado were unstoppable in transition. Cardona hit 27 points and Mercado, 25, as Meralco breezed. The Bolts biggest lead was 27. Gabby Espinas chipped in 20 points and Mark Isip 16 for Meralco.
Basden, 27, flew in last Sunday. As a senior in 2004-05, he averaged 15.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists with the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Basden finished his Charlotte career as the varsity’s all-time leader in steals.
“Eddie’s more a perimeter guy, a two-three more than a three-four,” said Cone. “He’s not like a Sean Chambers or a Lamont Strothers. He’s more like Galen Young, I suppose, but still different from him. He definitely has a lot of skills.”
Adams, 26, was the Nets’ second round pick in the 2006 draft. He played four years at the University of Arizona, averaging 17.5 points as a senior. Nicknamed “Hot Sauce,” Adams boasts a 50-inch vertical leap and likes to jack up triples. He arrived last Friday. Adams was measured at 6-3 5/16 at the PBA office yesterday.
A Rain Or Shine source said Adams plays three but is able to move to four for post-ups. At practice, he showed the ability to get to the basket. How Adams will adjust to the PBA style remains to be seen but his wealth of international experience should make it easy. Adams has played in Italy and Serbia and for the US under-21 national team at the Tournament of the Americas in Halifax in 2004.
Tipped to steal the show is Danridge who won the 2009 US NCAA slam dunk title by elevating with two basketballs and throwing them down in quick succession then in his encore, bringing it up from his left hip in mid-air for a whirlwind stuff. Danridge, 24, played on the US Athletes In Action squad, coached by Mike Jarvis, that took the Jones Cup crown in 2006. The US crushed the Philippines, 91-68, that year. The Philippine team was made up of L. A. Tenorio, Willie Miller, Dondon Hontiveros, Arwind Santos, Joseph Yeo, Yancy de Ocampo and Denok Miranda among others.
Danridge, whose father Victor is a pastor of the Inland Empire Deliverance Center in San Bernardino, California, is coming off a stint with Byblos in the Lebanese league where he averaged 28 points a game. In 2007, he broke his left leg and survived rehabilitation to come back on the court with inspiration from the Bible.
Another import in town is Syracuse’s Paul Harris who played for the Utah Jazz in the last NBA preseason. Harris, 24, averaged 12 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists as a Syracuse senior in 2008-09. He flew in last Monday.
B-Meg coach Jorge Gallent said the Derby Ace Llamados will test veteran Robert Brown of Buffalo for a week before deciding whether or not to sign him up for the conference. Brown, 30, is arriving this morning in time for B-Meg’s shoot-around. He has played in Australia, Iran, Israel, Dominican Republic and Argentina. Like Danridge, Brown was a former slam dunk champion – he won his prize in Australia in 2005.
Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio said the Express is considering to bring in 6-3 1/ 2 Alpha Bangura of St. John’s University. An option is to return Leroy Hickerson who hit at a 32.8 clip for Air21 last season. The problem is Hickerson may be over the 6-4 limit. Hickerson was measured at 6-5 last season but Gregorio said Air21 may bring him in for a remeasurement.
San Miguel Beer team manager Hector Calma said no decision has been made as to which import to hire but a leading candidate is Ira Brown of Gonzaga University, the school that produced John Stockton, Adam Morrison, Ronny Turiaf and Richie Frahm. Brown averaged 25 points for Coras de Tepic in the Mexican league last year.
Ginebra San Miguel coach Joseph Uichico said he’s still studying his options.
He named former Barako Bull import Cornelius (Scooter) McFadgon of Tennessee, the Seattle SuperSonics’ 2004 second round draft pick David Young of North Carolina Central and Anthony Grundy of North Carolina State as candidates.

PBA team owners finally meet (http://www.inquirer.net/sports/articles/PBA-team-owners-finally-meet.html)
Everyone had eagerly anticipated yesterday’s PBA team owners’ meeting set at the EDSA Shangrila Hotel in Pasig.
According to league old-timers, it’s been a decade since the ballclubs’ top honchos, some of them the country’s biggest and most powerful businessmen, gathered for a PBA concern.
Personally, I think it’s been more than a decade.
* * *
A few hours before yesterday’s event, a veteran colleague called to ask if I knew what Solar, the PBA’s television coveror, would be presenting to the owners.
The PBA’s television coverage was one of the three major items in the agenda that day.
My colleague said he got it from a good source that as we spoke, Solar COO Peter Chanliong was closing a block-time deal with ABS-CBN for the airing of the PBA games over Studio 23.
If the deal is closed, my colleague said the PBA games will be shown on Studio 23 starting next conference. He said he expected this development to be announced during the meeting.
* * *
Jose Bayani Baylon of Coke, who attended both the board of governors and team owners’ meeting was the earliest bird. The board was asked to come at 10 a.m. while the owners were invited to lunch at 12:30 p.m.
After JB, the next to arrive were Welcoat owners Raymond Yu and Terry Que, followed by Fred Uytengsu of Alaska, Bert Lina of Air21, Ramon Ang of San Miguel Corporation (San Miguel, Ginebra and B-Meg Derby Ace) and Manny V. Pangilinan of PLDT and Meralco.
George Chua of Red Bull sent word that he was not feeling well.
Regarded in the business sectors as “frenemies,” MVP greeted Ramon Ang warmly: “Ano, Don Ramon,” as the two proceeded to talk about airplanes, of all things.
* * *
The team owners had just entered the conference room when we arrived. While the meeting was ongoing, we were ushered to the coffee shop for lunch, which we never got to finish because we were notified that the team owners’ meeting was over and we only had l0 minutes for the open forum.
Commissioner Chito Salud’s report on the result of the meeting was short and sweet: Only a VHF channel for the airing of the second and third conferences of the PBA season will be acceptable; a maximum of 5 PBA cagers have been allowed to play for Smart Gilas; and the commissioner’s office has been tasked to make a recommendation within three months on whether or not to pursue the PBA coliseum project.
On other matters, Barako Bull’s leave of absence was approved, and also the formation of the PBA’s developmental league.
My colleague said that while Solar and Studio 23 had come to an agreement, this was never announced because it was preempted by the owners’ decision to accept only VHF channels. Studio 23 is a UHF channel.

Aquino top pick in the dispersal Draft (http://www.inquirer.net/sports/articles/Aquino-top-pick-in-the-dispersal-Draft.html)
#article-body p { margin-bottom: 10px; } MANILA—Powerade will pick first first in the conditional dispersal Draft and could make Marlou Aquino as the only player in PBA history ever to be selected first twice in the proceedings.
“Honestly, my staff and I have yet to discuss our options,” Powerade coach Bo Perasol said on Wednesday. “Pero it’s no secret we need a big man and Marlou can fill that void.”
Aquino is part of a 14-man pool that will be dispersed following the leave that Barako Bull was granted by the league Tuesday afternoon.
The Draft will be held Feb. 7 so that the players won’t be idled while the Energy Boosters are away.
National team Smart Gilas will take the place of the Boosters in the second conference and all indications point to the Phiilippine five also playing in the next as part of its preparations for the FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifiers.
The 6-foot-9 Aquino was the first overall choice in the 1996 Draft, plucked by Ginebra out of Adamson on the way to the Rookie of the Year award.
Now at 38 and definitely in the twilight of his career, Aquino can go out with a bang if he can join the Tigers who are in desperate need of a reliable inside presence after trading away Asi Taulava prior to the start of the season.
Lordy Tugade, Jojo Duncil, Chad Alonzo, Paolo Hubalde, Borgy Hermida, Dennis Daa, Rob Wainwright, Ken Bono, Richard Yee, Vaughn Canta, Aris Dimaunahan, Mark Andaya and Khazim Mirza are the others in the pool.
Barako Bull most likely could have seen action in its last PBA tournament after more than a decade of glorious participation highlighted by three import-laden tournament titles for the franchise under Yeng Guiao.
The team has experienced bad times in the last three or four seasons with some players and utility staff reportedly yet to be paid their full salaries for December and January and the government-required 13th month pay.
Players picked in the Draft will be paid by their new teams until the time Barako Bull returns to the league. If the team doesn’t, which many believe, those with live contracts will be paid by the PBA for the duration of their existing deals.
“Most, if not all, of the Barako players have live contracts and they must be honored,” Salud stated. “I have promised before that I would always look out for the interests of the players and I intend to keep that promise.”
Meanwhile, Meralco has signed up former US NCAA slam dunk champion Anthony Dandridge as import for the Commissioner’s Cup that opens on Feb. 20.
Dandridge, a 6-foot-4 leaper out of the University of New Mexico, planes in next Friday to join the B-Boys.
He will be the fifth import so far after Titus Ivory of Powerade, Hassan Adams of Rain or Shine, Eddie Basden of Alaska and Robert Brown of Derby Ace.
Dandridge averaged 28 points and finished second behind World Basketball Championship veteran Fadi El Khatib in scoring in the tough Lebanese Basketball League.
"I have seen some of his clips on YouTube and his athleticism is out of this world," said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.

Powerade should pick Ken Bono if there interest is to win games this coming conference. Same with air21 they should concentrate on getting a decent point guard in the likes of Dimaunahan or invest in the San Beda rookie Borgy Hermida to replace the son in law point guard. Knowing Yeng Guiao he will pick work ethics over talent and this could simply see Mark Andaya fall into the laps of the Rain or Shine franchise.
On the more important 4th pick, Tim Cone will not pass on the talents of a shooter like Tugarde and this will be the replacement that the team sorely miss with the departure of Fonancier. With this signing, Alaska will finally open a can of worms for they will expose that Tugarde is a property of SMB and that SMB continues to pay for Tugarde's monthly salary even if he was traded to REdbull... During the offseason it was the intention of Barako to trade Tugarde to BMeg before their participation in the 2nd conference was disrupted.... Nobody in the remaining picks would be signed and this would lead to Marlou falling into the laps of powerade as the second player to be added to the roster from the Barako camp.... Cheers

I have a feeling that team SMC will "ask" Air21 to draft Lordy for them.
Powerade wants to pick Lordy(or a swingman for that matter) but is having second thoughts since his salary is quite expensive for them. Mark Andaya is currently practicing with RoS.

Quiñahan, not Aquino, will shore up Tigers’ shallow frontline
REY JOBLE, GMANews.TV
01/28/2011 | 04:53 PM
Just when basketball experts and long-time Sta. Lucia fans were anticipating a possible reunion of Marlou Aquino and Dennis Espino in Powerade, the Tigers have decided to go on a new direction before the start of the Philippine Basketball Association second conference.
Burly slotman JR Quiñahan is expected to join the Tigers’ camp anytime soon after Powerade and Air21 agreed on a deal just recently.
Powerade coach Bo Perasol revealed this latest development to GMANews.TV.
“It’s already a done deal. We will get Quiñahan in exchange for our 2014 pick," Perasol said in a telephone interview.
Quiñahan’s entry squelched Powerade’s earlier plan to tap the services of the 6-foot-9 veteran center and former Rookie of the Year Aquino, who has been projected to be picked first among the Barako Bull players put on a conditional dispersal draft set Feb. 7.
Aquino’s former frontline partner, Espino, is the only center of Powerade, which gave up Asi Taulava in a three-team multi-player trade last season.
Aquino and Espino played together for 10 seasons and won two championships for the Realtors.
“With the expected entry of Quiñahan, we will forego our plans of getting Marlou because sosobra naman kami sa center," said Perasol.
Johann Ramos, Air21’s board governor, confirmed the trade.
“It’s a 2014 first-round pick," said Ramos in a text message, when asked of the details on the player exchange for the Quiñahan trade.
Deadly shooters Ren-Ren, Lordy may end up having new teams
Another player who is reportedly on the trading block is Ren-Ren Ritualo. The deadly gunner appears headed to play for the Meralco Bolts in the second conference.
“We want to be fair to Ren-Ren and we believe that he might get it with Meralco, one of the teams we’re talking with right now," said Perasol.
A source who is also privy on the discussion said Meralco has expressed interest in getting the 6-foot-1 guard from La Salle. If Ritualo ends up with the Bolts, he will be reunited with his long-time teammate and buddy Mac Cardona.
“Meralco's coaching staff felt the team needs to consider a deadly sniper, and Ren-Ren fits that job description, that’s why they are exploring all options," said the source, who requested anonymity. “But they need to come up with a deal that the Commissioner will approve."
Like Meralco, Powerade is also looking for a dependable wingman, and Perasol is now looking at Tugade, one of the players in the active roster of Barako Bull.
The 6-foot-3 Tugade, who spent the past few seasons recuperating from an ACL (knee) injury, may become the top pick in the coming dispersal draft, with Powerade owning the right to pick first.
“Yes, we’re considering to add a wingman. Lordy is one of the most dependable players, but there are other considerations which we'll have to factor in, including the team’s budget," said Perasol. - KY, GMANews.TV

there's talk spreading at the restos around Araneta Coliseum that KWill is very peeved with the way Coach Chot blames his players for the teams losses. It seems that ever since KWill was traded to Talk N Text, KWill is not happy with the way he is being utilized by Coach Chot. KWill is already on the brink of asking that he be allowed to join SMART GILAS as early as the 2nd Conference instead of continuing hearing Chot carry his chair whenever the Tropang Texters wins then pass the blame unto his players whenever the team falters.
So there could really be a big possiblity that Japeth would see action in the PBA as KWill's replacement. Japeth Aguilar unable to play in the last Asian Games is said to be the last straw as the SMART GILAS management and the SBP are no longer interested in waiting for him to achieve his true potential. Their patience had really run out on Aguilar.

History repeats itself: Alaska's PBA import exceeds height limit
REY JOBLE, GMANews.TV
01/31/2011 | 04:50 PM
For the second time in franchise history, Alaska Milk will send home a reinforcement who exceeded the height limit in the Philippine Basketball Association’s import-laden conference.
Eddie Basden, Alaska’s import choice for the coming PBA second conference, went over the height limit during the official measurement conducted at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City Monday.
The procedure witnessed by team representatives had Basden officially measuring 6-foot-4 and ¼. In the PBA's second conference, teams are allowed to field in imports not taller than 6-foot-4.
PBA operations manager Rickie Santos confirmed the news to GMANews.TV.
“Basden was officially measured at 6-foot-4 and ¼ inch," said Santos in a telephone interview. “We have a new procedure being followed now, but the most basic things are imports are measured lying down, head straight and eyes looking directly at the ceiling."
This is not the first time an Alaska import exceeded the height limit. In the 2005-06 import-laden conference, Victor Thomas, who once suited up for Red Bull to play in a tournament with a 6-foot-6 height limit a season before, was measured over the height limit in his supposed return to action in the PBA.
“Well, he exceeded the height limit and that’s the way it is, so we have to look for a replacement," said Alaska coach Tim Cone, who added that they are now looking at their shortlist of candidates to replace the NBA veteran Basden.
The PBA’s guidelines on the measurement of imports as approved by Commissioner Atty. Chito Salud are as follows:
1. PBA’s measurement procedure — A measuring bench at the PBA Office will be used for this purpose.
2. The import will lie flat on his back barefooted.
3. The technical group personnel conducting the measurement shall make sure that both backs of the knees, shoulder blades and the head are firmly resting on said bench. The head musty be in a straight-up position, not tucked in or raised up.
4. The import shall then be measured accordingly from the top of the head to the tip of his heels.
5. Any team representative present can request for a re-measurement. The procedure above shall then be repeated and the second measurement shall be considered final and official. Only one request for re-measurement shall be allowed. If there’s no request for a re-measurement from any of the team representatives present, then the first measurement will be considered final and official.
6. Any fraction over the allowed height limit shall be considered as a failure to meet the height limit requirement.
“Things have changed the way things were being done five or 10 years ago. Eddie was listed at 6-foot-5, so we were anticipating that he could easily pass the height limit of 6-foot-4. So now, teams should look at one another because if someone will get a 6-foot-5, then he could be over the limit as well," added Cone.
According to Cone, one of the imports that team representatives should look at is Talk n Text import Paul Harris, who is also listed at 6-foot-5 in the US just like Basden.
Harris, who played for the Utah Jazz in the Orlando Pro Summer League, will backstop the Tropang Texters in the second conference. The Tropang Texters are currently battling the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippine Cup best-of-seven finals series. - KY, GMANews.TV

PBA trade: Quiñahan in exchange for 2 future picks approved
01/31/2011 | 06:48 PM
Not just one but two future picks will be given to the Air21 Express, who have agreed to send slotman JR Quiñahan to the Powerade Tigers.
Powerade coach Bo Perasol and Air21 board governor Johann Ramos made the confirmation to GMANews.TV Monday night.
“We’ve already agreed on the revisions made by the Commissioner, because we really need to get the services of JR Quiñahan," said Perasol. “He’s the team’s immediate need."
The Tigers earlier agreed to give the Express their 2014 first-round pick in exchange for the beefy 6-foot-5 Quiñahan.
Instead of the one-on-one trade, PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud made some adjustments by giving Air21 Powerade’s 2013 first-round pick instead of 2014 as proposed by the two teams. A 2012 second-round draft pick was also approved to be given to the Express.
Both camps have agreed on the revisions by the Commissioner and signed the document coming from the PBA Commissioner's Office, finalizing the deal that was verbally agreed upon by the two teams last week, but was only documented and revised Monday.
“Basically, the idea of trading Quiñahan is to free up some space in our frontline. JR will be our fifth big man and we won’t be able to maximize Jay-R Reyes, our new acquisition, if we still have Quiñahan," said Johann Ramos.
Ritualo to Meralco via free agency
Powerade and Meralco have agreed on an early one-on-one swap between deadshot guard Ren-Ren Ritualo and promising young player Ogie Menor, but the trade was disapproved by Commissioner Salud.
“The Commissioner turned it down," said Perasol. “Maybe he felt Ren-Ren has an advantage over Menor, that’s why the proposed trade didn’t push through."
Instead of getting a player in return in unloading Ritualo, the Tigers found themselves empty-handed, as they were forced to release the 6-foot-1 former La Salle standout to the free-agency list.
Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio confirmed the deal had bogged down, but the Bolts mentor said they were able to get the rights on Ritualo based on two things — Powerade has already released him to the free-agent list, and the player himself has expressed his intent to play for Meralco.
“Tomorrow (Tuesday), we will submit to the PBA Office Ren-Ren’s letter of intention to play for Meralco ," said Gregorio, who added that the inclusion of one of the league’s dependable three-point shooters will not only add depth, but will also give the squad a player who can complement his once one-dimensional squad.
“When we were playing in Cebu, all the teams which we went up against were playing zone against us forever," added Gregorio. “They’ve easily figured a way to stop us, which led me to the idea of tapping a shooter, and Ritualo fits the role."
Gregorio, also the head of basketball operations of Meralco, also revealed that he once considered veteran swingman Junthy Valenzuela, but opted to get Ritualo instead.
“His (Valenzuela) knee isn’t ready yet, so we looked for the next best option, and we found it in Ren-Ren," added Gregorio. - KY, Rey Joble, GMANews.TV

The recent PBA blockbuster trade involving eight players, three teams and two future draft picks wasn’t hatched in a day or two. An insider recently disclosed that it took at least six weeks, sleepless nights, long hours of negotiations and creative thinking to finalize the deal.
The bottom line was finding a win-win-win situation for the trading parties Rain Or Shine, Meralco and Air 21. It’s called the art and science of wheeling and dealing, something you don’t learn in school. The masters of the “trade” thrive in the thrill of putting together a package that is generous or satisfactory to all concerned. Nobody wants to get short-changed so the deal must be fair every which way – otherwise, forget it.
Investment bankers think the same way, matching sources and users of funds with imaginative financial engineering.
“It’s one of the toys for the big boys,” said the insider who was privy to the talks that led to the trade. “Representatives of the three teams were getting called for updates and tweaks at least four times a day. It starts with a rumor then someone initiates a meeting to talk things over. You try to address everyone’s needs and concerns. You study how players fit in particular teams, if they can relate to the coaches, if they can play within their system. It’s not easy but that’s what makes it a big thrill – a challenge.”
The trade sent Sol Mercado, Erick Rodriguez and Paolo Bugia to Meralco, Ronjay Buenafe, Ronnie Matias, Beau Belga and two future Air 21 first round draft picks to Rain Or Shine and Reed Juntilla and Jay-R Reyes to Air 21. What made the deal somewhat complicated was the mix-up of players from three different teams so that, for instance, Meralco picked up Mercado and Bugia from the Elasto Painters while Rodriguez came from the Express.
Rain Or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said he couldn’t be happier getting draft picks in 2011 and 2013. Additionally, he is reunited with his former Air 21 players Buenafe, Matias and Belga. Although Matias won’t be available until next conference to recover from his ACL injury, it’s obvious he’s Guiao’s kind of player – hard-nosed, won’t back down and gritty. Belga is cut in the same mold as Matias – physical and rugged. He’ll surely fortify Rain Or Shine’s middle with holdover Doug Kramer. Buenafe was Guiao’s primary perimeter gunner at Air 21 and will relive his role with Rain Or Shine.
* * * *
As for Mercado, it’s no secret he was the target of at least three teams. But because of his superstar status, it was clear that a trade involving him couldn’t be just a one-on-one deal unless a James Yap was involved.
“Not too many fans know that after Meralco beat Rain Or Shine in triple overtime in the eliminations, Sol went over to coach Ryan (Gregorio) and congratulated him,” said the insider. “He even entered the Meralco dugout. That showed the respect Sol has for Ryan. So when this deal was being packaged, it was only logical that Meralco would be part of the trade.”
Reyes moving to Air 21 was also providential. “When Jay-R was playing for Letran in high school, he was being recruited by nearly all the UAAP and NCAA teams – he was that good,” continued the insider. “Jay-R chose to play for UP in the UAAP because he has always been very close to the Gregorio family, often taking his meals at their home. So it wasn’t difficult to bring Jay-R to Air 21 where Allan Gregorio is the team manager. To make the whole deal work, we had to find teams where the players would be comfortable and succeed.”
The other players just fell into place.
Are there more trades in the offing? Because the PBA is so dynamic, it wouldn’t be surprising if another blockbuster deal is announced sooner than later. Two teams were rumored to be offering starting guards for Mercado in a straight one-on-one deal but none worked out.
* * * *
As for Barako Bull’s leave of absence, the insider said the PBA should be more understanding of team owner George Chua’s plight.
“Mr. Chua is recovering from some financial setbacks but he’s been with the PBA since 2000,” said the insider. “He’s part of the PBA family. Now that he’s down, it’s unfair to be hard on him. He’s hoping to make a comeback in the third conference but that remains to be seen if he can recover financially. I think he should be commended for giving way to the national team to take Barako’s spot in the second conference.”
Smart Gilas has been allowed by the PBA to play in Barako’s place in the coming second conference. Because of its forfeiture, Barako will not share in ticket sales and whatever sponsorships are raised for the conference.
However, it will continue to receive a share in the TV income for the year.
Barako’s players will be available in a dispersal draft after the Philippine Cup finals. Undrafted players with live contracts will be paid their salaries by the PBA from Barako’s equity and share of TV income.
The players in the Barako roster are Marlou Aquino, Lordy Tugade, Vaughn Canta, Pong Escobal, Khasim Mirza, Chad Alonzo, Rob Wainwright, Mark Andaya, Paolo Hubalde, Marvin Cruz, Jojo Duncil, Aris Dimaunahan, Richard Yee, Jason Misolas, Ken Bono, Borgie Hermida, Dennis Daa and Bruce Viray. Since the start of this season, the Barako cagers who have moved to other teams were Sunday Salvacion, Mark Isip, Hans Thiele and Juntilla.
Postscript: Alaska topped the three-day invitational tournament that ended in Cebu last Thursday. The Aces beat Powerade, Meralco and M. Lhuillier to finish with a perfect 3-0 record. The Tigers wound up second at 2-1, Meralco third at 1-2 and M. Lhuillier fourth a 0-3. Alaska played with import Eddie Basden, formerly of the Chicago Bulls, while Powerade was bannered by Titus Ivory. “Alaska and Powerade played with their imports and it proved to be the difference maker,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio. “We dropped our last two assignments to Alaska and Powerade. I opted to sit out Bitoy Omolon (calf) and Thiele (left leg). Sol also didn’t play against Alaska with a bruised right hand so as not to aggravate their injuries.” The Bolts played without Asi Taulava and import Tony Danridge.

ritualo-menor trade was disapproved by the commissioner then the powerade decides to drop ritualo in the line up that makes ritualo a free agent ( similar situation with sam eman and celino cruz) and meralco grab the opportunity. they will submit to the office the letter of intention of ritualo to play for meralco.
btw cruz is now with powerade after ginebra activated john wilson and powerade grab the opportunity to get cruz via free agency

Newly designated Air21 coach Bong Ramos is back on a PBA saddle after a stint with the Brunei Barracudas in the Asean Basketball League and he’s happy to be home.
Ramos said yesterday he’s looking forward to the Commissioner’s Cup which begins Feb. 18. A few lineup tweaks here and there welcomed his arrival with the switch from one J. R. to another Jay-R the biggest change.
Jay-R Reyes joined the Express in the recent multi-player trade involving Rain Or Shine, Meralco and Air21. Then, in a separate transaction, Air21 dealt J. R. Quinahan to Powerade for a 2013 first round pick and a 2012 second round choice.
Ramos said the Express is still looking for a pure shooter who can slash. A decision will be made any day now as to whom to pursue. Among the top candidates are Patrick Cabahug, Ramsey Williams and veteran Leo Avenido. Ramos’ Filipino imports with the Barracudas were Williams, Bryan Faundo and Chester Tolomia.
“We’re looking at Cabahug or Avenido,” said Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio. “Avenido was named the best Asean import in the ABL and seems ready for a PBA comeback. Rudy Lingganay also played very well for Kuala Lumpur but he’s more of a point guard and we’re solid in that position (with Wynne Arboleda, Josh Urbiztondo and Marcy Arellano). I’m sure a lot of PBA teams are keeping a close watch on Lingganay.”
Air21’s import JaJuan Smith of the University of Tennessee is arriving tomorrow. A backup in case Smith doesn’t work out is Alpha Bangura of St. John’s University.
“Smith plays two and three, exactly the position where we want to shore up,” said Gregorio. “He’s about 6-2. Alpha is finishing up his contract in Beirut and we’ll talk to him when he’s free. But our first choice is Smith.”
Gregorio said the day he left with Smart Gilas to join coach Rajko Toroman’s staff for the international invitationals in Dubai a few weeks ago, a call came from Air21’s PBA governor Johann Ramos.
“I think my two brothers (Patrick and Ryan) were conspiring to make a trade and took advantage of my absence,” laughed Gregorio. “But in the end, it was a win-win-win situation. As they say, everybody happy. We got what we wanted. Meralco got what it wanted and Rain Or Shine got what it wanted.”
Gregorio said Air21 is deep at point guard and the 4-5 spots. The Express brought in Reyes to join Rabeh Al-Hussani, Noy Baclao and Carlo Sharma in the frontline while Reed Juntilla came aboard to take over from Ronjay Buenafe who went to the Elasto Painters.
Others in the Air21 cast are Rey Guevarra, Arboleda, Urbiztondo, Arellano, Wesley Gonzales, Leo Najorda and Lou Gatumbato. Gone from last conference are Quinahan, Ronnie Matias, Erick Rodriguez and Buenafe.
Ramos said his reunion with Arboleda and Gonzales is a positive development. “We were together before,” said Ramos. “I’m excited to be back in the PBA.”

Few takers for displaced E-Boosters?
Musong R. Castillo
First Posted 01:16:41 05/02/2011
http://www.inquirer.net/sports/images/articles/barako05_841.jpg
MANILA---Only a handful of players are expected to be picked in the Dispersal Draft the PBA will hold for Barako Bull’s displaced roster on Monday because the remaining nine teams have a surplus of players in their respective lineups.
Powerade, which will pick first after finishing in a tie for last place with the Energy Boosters in the Philippine Cup, has 16 players in its active roster and is expected to pass up the chance to strengthen its lineup for the next conference, the Commissioner’s Cup.
Rain or Shine, Meralco and Barangay Ginebra are also reportedly not interested in picking from the draft.
Llamados eyeing Escobal
Derby Ace, though, is looking at the possibility of acquiring Pong Escobal while Air21 is likely to tap point guard Marvin Cruz.
The draft, which will be held at the PBA offices in Libis, Quezon City, was necessitated by Barako Bull’s leave of absence from the league.
Barako Bull is lending its slot to the Smart-Gilas national squad.
Even if some of its players are not picked, the league has promised to assume the contracts of those players and staff who have live deals.
Also on Monday, the league’s board of governors will meet to tackle the television coverage for the next conference, as well as to talk to representatives of companies interested in joining the Developmental League.
D-League meet draws 11 firms
At least 11 companies have shown interest in playing in the PBA’s first-ever farm league and all their representatives will attend Monday’s meeting with members of the league board.
Maynilad of Manny V. Pangilinan, who also owns Talk ‘N Text and Meralco in the PBA, the University of the Philippines, the North Luzon Expressway, and a company represented by Lambert Ramos are just four of the firms interested in joining the D-League.
Two other former PBL teams, which requested not to be named at the moment, will also be in the meeting.
New Alaska import
In a related development, Alaska yesterday came to terms with L.D. Williams, a former Wake Forest standout in the United States NCAA.
Williams is expected to plane in on Monday and take the spot originally reserved for Eddie Basden, who had been disqualified from playing in the Commissioner’s Cup after being measured to be a quarter-of-an-inch taller than the 6-foot-4 limit.
Williams will be coming from the same program that produced NBA great Tim Duncan. He finished his career at Wake Forest with 1,005 points, 136 steals, and ACC all-Defensive team inclusions for 2009-2010—the only player in school history to achieve the feat.
He started in all but one of Wake Forest games during his school career.

Barako Bull not returning?
Energy Boosters up in dispersal draft today
BY NOLI CORTEZ
BARAKO Bull is reportedly not returning to the PBA, putting a big question mark on the fate of most of its players.
The Energy Boosters’ players will be up for grabs in a dispersal draft today at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City, with the understanding players picked could rejoin their mother team if it returns in the third conference.
But a knowledgeable has source told Malaya franchise owner George Chua is shifting his sights elsewhere and is not planning on making a PBA comeback anytime soon.
"It is on his business interests Mr. Chua is concentrating on right now at wala sa radar niya ang PBA," said the insider. "Kaya ‘yung sinasabing babalik ang Barako sa third conference, malabo na ‘yun."
That should be a grave concern for most, if not all, of the 18 players in the Energy Boosters’ lineup: Marlou Aquino, Lordy Tugade, Jojo Duncil, Rob Wainwright, Dennis Daa, Chad Alonzo, Richard Yee, Pong Escobal, Marvin Cruz, Ken Bono, Paolo Hubalde, Aris Dimaunahan, Mark Andaya, Christopher Canta, Bruce Viray, Jason Misolas, Borgie Hermida and Khazim Mirza.
Barako’s slot in the second conference has been taken over by Smart-Gilas.
It seems only a handful of teams are making any picks today and it is doubtful if any will keep Barako players for the long haul, leaving most of the players in limbo this early in their PBA career.
Aquino, Duncil, Wainwright, Yee, Viray, Canta and Misolas have contracts expiring until the end of February, while rookie Hermida and Tugade’s contract will expire on July 31.
If Chua changes his mind and Barako rejoins the league for the season-ending Governors Cup, Hubalde, Alonzo, Dimaunahan, Bono, Cruz, Escobal, Mirza and Daa, whose contracts expire at the end of August 2011, will return to the team.
There have been reports the entire Energy Boosters team, including the coaches and utility staff, have back wages dating back to three-and-a-half months, with Commissioner Chito Salud and Chairman Rene Pardo saying they will ensure those amounts are paid in full.
"They (Barako) have to give the team members’ back wages in lump sum, and they have to submit to the PBA a document that specifies how much amount went to this player or team member along with the team members’ conforme," said Salud.
That should come as some sort of consolation for the Energy Boosters, who are mostly young players in their mid-20s, with only Aquino the most senior member at 38 and Tugade and Dimaunahan the next at 33 and 32, respectively.
In today’s dispersal draft set to start at 1 p.m., the teams draft in the progressing order of their Philippine Cup finish. For winding up ninth, Powerade picks first, followed by Rain or Shine, Air21, Alaska, Meralco, B-Meg Derby Ace, Ginebra, San Miguel Beer and Talk N Text.

Majority of PBA teams not interested in Barako dispersal draft
REY JOBLE, GMA News Online
02/06/2011 | 05:51 PM
The conditional Philippine Basketball Association dispersal draft involving Barako Bull players gets underway Monday at the league’s office in Libis, Quezon City.
But majority of the nine teams entitled to pick in the draft have hardly shown any interest in adding another player to their respective rosters.
Powerade earns the right to select first in the draft, but coach Bo Perasol said they’re not interested in acquiring another player so as to save space for the team’s salary cap.
“We might not pick in the draft because we’re very tight in terms of salary cap," said Perasol, whose squad was forced to unload Ren-Ren Ritualo from the free agent market, but took in burly slotman JR Quiñahan in a trade with Air21 to strengthen the team’s frontline.
After Powerade, Rain or Shine selects next, but fiery mentor Yeng Guiao stressed there’s no room for an additional player in his squad.
“Aside from the fact that we’re already loaded, it will save the squad from additional expenses. We’re pretty okay now, so I guess we might pass up on drafting another player," said Guiao in a telephone interview.
Air21’s team executives Johann Ramos and Allan Gregorio had mixed reactions regarding the draft. The Express are lined up to pick third in the draft, which was created after Barako Bull filed for a temporary leave of absence in the coming PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The Energy Boosters’ spot will be assumed by Smart Gilas, whose participation was given approval by the league’s team owners and board of governors in a rare meeting last month.
“We already have 14 players in our line-up," said Ramos, the team’s board governor."
Gregorio, the Express’ team manager, had other things in mind.
“I mentioned Marvin Cruz, pero mukhang mahirap pa because of our point guard rotation," said Gregorio, whose squad obtained combo guard Reed Juntila and signed free agent Lou Gatumbato to a contract extension. The team still has starting quarterback Wynne Arboleda.
Alaska is set to select fourth, but multi-titled bench tactician Tim Cone is not that excited to choose any of the players on the list.
The Barako Bull players who are in the 18-man dispersal pool are former all-star players Marlou Aquino and Lordy Tugade, Jojo Duncil, Rob Wainwright, Dennis Daa, Chad Alonzo, Richard Yee, Pong Escobal, Marvin Cruz, Ken Bono, Paolo Hubalde, Aris Dimaunahan, Mark Andaya, Christopher Canta, Bruce Viray, Jason Misolas and rookies Borgie Hermida and Khazim Mirza.
Aquino, Duncil, Wainwright, Yee, Viray, Canta and Misolas have contracts expiring until the end of February, while Hermida's and Tugade’s contracts will end July 31 of this year.
Hubalde, Alonzo, Dimaunahan, Bono, Cruz, Escobal, Mirza and Daa have live contracts until end of August 2011. If Barako Bull returns in the season-ending Governors Cup, players with existing contracts will return to the Energy Drinkers’ fold.
Players who will be picked up in the dispersal draft will play for their temporary squads for a period of three months.
“It doesn’t make any sense picking players from the dispersal draft," Cone told GMA News Online in a telephone interview. “Players don’t look attractive, and of course, the PBA won’t give a salary cap exception once you pick a player from the draft."
But PBA operations manager Rickie Santos explained that a player who will be picked up in the dispersal draft won't be counted in the team's salary cap.
"The additional player will be exempted from the salary cap computation, but teams will still have to follow the 14-man roster," said Santos in a text message.
After Alaska, Meralco and B-Meg Derby Ace are the next teams which will either pick or pass.
Bolts mentor Ryan Gregorio texted one word when asked who among the players his team will choose.
“None," said the three-time PBA champion coach, who resigned as coach of B-Meg to assume a more substantial role as mentor and head of basketball operations of Meralco this season.
Gregorio’s predecessor, Jorge Gallent of B-Meg Derby Ace, is also not keen on picking anybody from the draft.
“We need a big man who can run, but I don’t see any of that from the players included in the draft," said Gallent.
Barangay Ginebra takes its turn at No. 7, before runner-up San Miguel Beer and newly-crowned Philippine Cup champion Talk N’ Text round up the mid-season draft.
In his memorandum issued to the teams, PBA commissioner Chito Salud said the drafting team shall assume the contract of the drafted player for the second conference. He also said there shall be no contract re-negotiations except for those players whose contracts will expire before the end of the second conference.
Those with expired contracts become free agents, although Barako Bull still holds the right of first refusal. - KY, GMA News Online

I really feel sad for the 16 players that were not picked, they are not yet paid for the backpay that Barako Bull owes them, now they are unemployed.
how would be the future of their family .... their children.
The PBA should do something to help these players at least upto them getting their backpay and being paid upto the end of the season.

Just dont understand why powerade did not get a bigman in the likes of ken bono... should really just disband the team and sell the franchise. Pba states that those players do not count in the salary cap scheme et al and even for just 1 conference powerade still do not want to go all out and would like to save on salary rather than win some ballgames.....

from what I heard it is Baylon's own money which is keeping the Coke franchise alive in the PBA as Coke International HQ does not feel maintaining a Philippine Basketball Team had helped improve the market share of coke products in the Philippine Market.
In a corporate setting it is really hard to justify the high maintenance costs of a PBA team while generating not much return-on-investment, more so that Coke as a brand is already a household name and the debacle of the Powerade National Team of Yeng Guiao actually incurred more of bad publicity and a negative effect in the market.
The Coke Management is silently looking for buyers for their PBA Franchise unfortunately the attraction of having a team in the PBA is no longer there as it seems only the San Miguel conglomerate and MVP's group of companies are interested in putting up teams, even Harbour Centre and Hapee Toothpaste is not that eager to join the PBA as they have before and would rather join the PBA D-league or invest at an ABL team.
The financial collapse of the Barako Bull Franchise has really become a deterrent. Then with former PBA franchise holders like Shell, the Concepcions, the Gokongweis and the Ayalas rather walk away from the PBA despite having the financial capability is something prospective new Franchise applicants has to ponder on first before they decide to join the PBA.

Barako owes Hermida nearly P100K in wages
BY JEROME LAGUNZAD
LESS than a month after helping San Beda College regain the NCAA cage crown through an 18-game sweep, Borgie Hermida hooked up with Barako Bull, expecting big things in his rookie year in the pro league.
Four months later, the 5-foot-8 guard has been relegated to the sidelines along with 15 other teammates, joining the growing number of unemployed Filipinos, a casualty of Barako Bull’s failure to make a dent in the highly-competitive energy drink market.
Of the 18 Barako Bull players offered in the dispersal draft last Monday, only forward Lordy Tugade and guard Pong Escobal were tabbed by San Miguel Beer and B-Meg Derby Ace, respectively. Hermida, along with veteran center Marlou Aquino and Fil-Am Rob Wainwright, plus 13 others, were snubbed by the rest of the teams, stranding their careers.
Hermida’s contract with the Energy Boosters gives him a monthly take of no less than P50,000. Barako Bull is mandated to pay him until July 31, when his contract expires. That should be enough to tide him over until he finds a new team, or lands a slot with any squad competing in the Developmental League set to start next month.
There’s a catch, though. Hermida, 22, doesn’t know when his next paycheck is coming. In fact, he doesn’t even know if Barako Bull will pay him back wages close to P100,0000 representing his salary from December last year and January this year.
"After naming mag-champion (in the NCAA), talagang mataas ang expectations ko na magtatagal ako sa paglalaro sa PBA. Kaso, ‘yung nangyari ngayon ay kabaligtaran. Disaster talaga," Hermida told Malaya/Business Insight in an interview.
The contracts of Tugade and Escobal have been absorbed by the Beermen and Llamados, respectively. Along with Hermida, Aquino, and Wainwright, also left undrafted were Jojo Duncil, Dennis Daa, Chad Alonzo, Richard Yee, Marvin Cruz, Ken Bono, Paulo Hubalde, Aris Dimaunahan, Mark Andaya, Chris Canta, Bruce Viray, Jason Misolas, and Khazim Mirza.
Barako Bull took a leave of absence for the Commissioner’s Cup "to rebuild," as team owner George Chua initially told the PBA Board, its spot given to Smart-Gilas which will play as a guest squad. Recent reports indicated, however, the Energy Boosters have no plans to make a comeback in the third conference, with Chua reportedly opting to concentrate on his other business interests.
Until Chua makes it official, however, Hermida and his undrafted teammates can’t play for any team until after their contracts expire.
"Hindi pa ako puwedeng sumali sa ibang liga dahil may contract pa ako. Ang best choice talaga ay makapaglaro muna sa D-League. Kung suswertihin, baka may PBA team na kumuha sa akin," said Hermida.
Chua has an option to sell the franchise, a possibility that Hermida welcomed.
"Malungkot siyempre dahil hindi ako makakalaro ng ilang buwan," Hermida said. "Sana lang, kung hindi na sila sasali ulit sa PBA, ibenta na lang nila ang franchise para magkaroon ulit kami ng trabaho."
Hermida, who had a stellar five-year collegiate career with the Red Lions, punctuated by four title conquests, played in just six games in his rookie stint with Barako, averaging 2.2 points a game, 1.5 rebounds and .7 assists while averaging 11.5 minutes a game, figures that don’t necessarily attract the attention of top-ranked teams.
While waiting for further developments, Hermida intends to take his game to the D-League to keep himself in top shape and hope for the best.
"Maaaring malas lang talaga tayo ngayon pero naniniwala pa rin ako kay God na may better plans siya para sa akin. Hopefully muli akong makakapag-laro sa PBA dahil pangarap ko talaga ito," he concluded.

The lazy SOB is finally saying goodbye to the PBA
With no taker, Aquino takes exit
MANILA, Philippines - Marlou Aquino wants to play for the remainder of his existing contract, hoping for a chance to end his playing career with his original team Barangay Ginebra.
His wish may not be granted, though.
The 16-year PBA veteran has found himself without a team on Barako Bull’s decision to take a leave of absence in the coming Commissioners Cup.
The 6-foot-9 behemoth found no taker either on the dispersal draft conducted by the PBA involving the Barako players Monday.
Aquino now faces the prospect of spending the remaining part of his contract on the sideline. His contract expires in August.
“If there are really no teams interested, I have no other choice but to retire and start a business,” said Aquino.
He thought a return stint with Ginebra should have been a perfect ending to his long, colorful career.
Ginebra coach Jong Uichico said it’s up to the management to decide.
“What I know is that the management wants the team to get young. I don’t think we will achieve that by getting Marlou,” said Uichico.
“Besides, we have Eric (Menk), Rico (Villanueva), Yancy (de Ocampo) and Billy (Mamaril). Then there will be the import. I don’t think Marlou can get playing time and have his graceful exit with us,” Uichico added.
Aquino, among the best big men ever seen in the PBA, started his PBA career as Ginebra’s top draft pick in 1996.
He had his best years in the pros with the Kings from 1996-1999, winning one championship and earning spots in the Mythical First Five twice.
He was traded to Sta. Lucia for Jun Limpot in 2000, playing 10 seasons with the Realtors before being dealt to Meralco then to Barako Bull this campaign.
Through the 2010 season, the former Adamson Falcon had 7,744 points, 3,840 rebounds, 1,128 assists and 1,125 blocks in 631 games.

Upon learning this, Uchico immediately cut him from the team. 1. yep, he should have joined Gilas because Coach Toro wanted him
2. probably, but we'll never know because he never joined the team in the first place. however, it should be noted that Smart Gilas, which doesn't have the financial problems of Barako Bulls, wanted his services but he didn't bite.

Jervy has a good work ethic. Please remember that Enrico Villanueva had his best statistical season when he played under coach Kalbo.

I don't get it... Sir lovejones did not mention that the PBA was the problem. He was (at least the way i see things) pointing out that the decision of Mr. Menor to be drafted early, did not pan out the way he thought it would be.
Who would have thought that the once "elite" team Barako Bull would be cash strapped, and who would have thought that Mr Menor will end up in Barako Bull and would be in this position.
Please dont insinuate that its always PBA vs Gilas, or its PBA vs the World...
Because its not... Will never achieve the "Basketball Unity" we are all dreaming of with this kind of rationale

Its because Gabe is too soft of a player for a Yeng Guiao. Guiao could be having a hard time making Norwood play like fellow Kapangpangan Calvin Abueva.
When an opposing player falls down, you must not give him a helping hand (which Norwood has a habit of doing) so that he can stand-up but instead give him a foot on his hand or back so that he'll stay down.

It is one thing to be physical, its another thing to be dirty. Gabe needs to be physical without being dirty. I cannot believe you are criticizing him for being a true sportsman.

I am not criticizing Norwood as I am just reminding everybody what Coach Yeng expects from his players.
To Coach Yeng, if he can do it, he wants his players to also to do the same.

So even how talented Gabe might be, he would not fit into the player that Guiao wants for his team.

Yes do agree .... that's why to Coach Yeng, it does not matter if you are a superstar or a role player if you cannot do what I want you to do, I dont need you. Whats important to him is who can do the job.
We cannot deny the success of Guiao making no-name players to better players today. There are really players who do shine in his system.

And will Gabe be tough enough to take some of Yeng's curses and spits? My wild guess is he won't (or did not?) so yeah, i'd like to believe there's a semblance of truth to those rumors especially if you consider Norwood's rather

You assumed incorrectly. I have seen YG's brand of ball since his Swift days. I actually am not opposed to the idea that Gabe's style does not fit Yeng's philo. My reaction is more on the "giving a helping hand vs. stepping on it" comment. You see, you could have made your point clear without mentioning it.

RUMOR: Gabe Norwood for Bon-Bon Custodio, Mark Borboran and Brandon Cablay.
Ill dip my hand and write the names of Elmer Espiritu, Cablay and Samigue Eman for Norwood would be a better and not a lopsided trade. Alaska has alot of use for the likes of Borboran and Custodio and would deem a big loss rather than improvement in their rotation....

It depends not only on the player but also on the coach and team he finds himself in. If you're a guard and you get drafted by a team already filled to the brim with guards (e.g. Ginebra) or by a coach who doesn't trust rooks (e.g. Tim Cone), things might become difficult for you.
I guess to have a solid career in the pba, you need a dose of luck in these three aspects.

Ato Agustin was a second round pick by SMB in 1989 and was riding the bench most of the time. The injury to starter Samby Lim paved way for Agustin to show his worth and after 3 years he was voted as the 1992 MVP.
Chot Reyes felt that Jay Washington didn't fit-in to his style of play and traded him to SMB. Washington's career fluorished at SMB and won the Best Play of the Conference Award in the last two conferences.
Back in the late 70s to early 80s, 6'6" Romy Mamaril was a bench warmer for the Crispa Redmanizers. He was like the "Walking Victory Cigar" because he only gets to be fielded in when his team is already leading by a large margin. Bobby Jaworski took Mamaril under his guidance at Ginebra and improved his game.
You need to have the right coach and team that fits you in order to have a great career in the pros.

the real score is that Sol Mercado wanted out after his run-in with Caloy Garcia and there was animosity between Sol and Yeng Guiao in the past.
And in the Financial side ROS could not really afford paying max contracts to Norwood, Solomon and Jay-R Reyes all at the same time plus the near max of TY Tang.

Its because he was the twelfth overall pick in the 2008 PBA Draft and his agent was a good negotiator.
Please remember Gabe, Sol and TY all came in the same Draft class.
In 2008 Fil-Americans Gabe Norwood and Solomon Mercado, Rain or Shine's prized recruits, have signed separate three-year contracts worth P8.7 million each. Both players will get P150,000 a month on the first, P225,000 on the second and the maximum P350,000 on the third year.
The minimum monthly salary for a rookie is P30,000 and the maximum is P150,000 in the first year. A rookie may be signed to a short-term contract (a month or a conference) or as long as three years. The escalation limit in a multi-year contract is 50 percent annually.
And Tang being a star player of Harbour Centre and De La Salle was one of the more marketable and sought players at that Draft class.

Gilas to release players for PBA draft
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star) Updated February 14, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - National basketball team coach Rajko Toroman said the other day that Smart Gilas players will be allowed to apply for the coming PBA draft on condition they remain available for the FIBA-Asia Championships in Wuhan, China, on Sept. 15-25.
The PBA has reportedly been informed of the possibility of the Gilas cagers applying for the draft and the condition of playing in Wuhan. There appears to be no problem in the PBA agreeing to the condition because of national interest.
Gilas players Greg Slaughter, J. R. Cawaling and Aldrech Ramos, however, will not apply for the draft because they are committed to play for their schools in the next UAAP season. Another cager Japeth Aguilar was drafted first overall two years ago and is on loan to Gilas from Talk ‘N’ Text.
It’s not certain if Gilas skipper Chris Tiu will apply for the draft. A source said he is being tapped to spearhead the family business in China. But the same source said he may stay on to play for the national team.
Toroman said he won’t hold back the Gilas players from turning pro and making basketball their career. “We want to give them the opportunity to grow as professional players,” said Toroman who turned 56 last Thursday. “I think we will end this chapter of Gilas after we play in the FIBA-Asia Championships and if we’re lucky, the London Olympics. Then, it’s the turn of the next generation to play for Gilas with guys like Kiefer Ravena and Ray Parks.”
With the Gilas influx in the PBA draft, Toroman said the rookie harvest will be rich. Among the Gilas cagers expected to apply are J. V. Casio, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz, Mac Baracael, Mark Barroca, Dylan Ababou and Jason Ballesteros. Collegiate standouts Junmar Fajardo, Paul Lee and Eric Salamat are also in line to turn pro.
Only the winner of the FIBA-Asia Championships will gain an outright ticket to the London Olympics. The second and third placers will get a chance to vie for three wildcard slots in a 12-team Olympic qualifying tournament next year. Toroman said it’s easier to win the FIBA-Asia title than to clinch a wildcard slot in the qualifying tournament that will involve countries from Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australasia. In the 2008 Olympic qualifying tournament in Athens, Asia was represented by Korea and Lebanon with both teams winless in two games to bow out in the first round of eliminations. The three countries that bagged the wildcard tickets to Beijing were Croatia, Greece and Germany. Lebanon was beaten by Greece and Brazil while Korea lost to Slovenia and Canada.
Toroman said he hopes to recruit five PBA players for the FIBA-Asia Championships and they’ll probably come from teams owned by PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan. The candidates are Meralco’s Asi Taulava and Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes and Ranidel de Ocampo of Talk ‘N’ Text.
“It will mean a lot of sacrifice from the PBA players joining Gilas,” said Toroman. “It will also mean a lot of sacrifice from their PBA teams. So that I think it will be easier to tap players from Mr. Pangilinan’s teams. Jimmy is a perfect fit for us with his leadership, quickness, playmaking and scoring. Ryan is an all-around player with a lot of character and spirit. Kelly’s defense and rebounding are outstanding while Ranidel gives us toughness, rebounding and scoring inside and outside. Asi has experience and is a dominant inside player who’s a solid backup for Marcus (Douthit). We’re hoping the PBA players can stay with us for three months. They’ll be with Gilas when we play in the PBA third conference. They’ll play in the FIBA-Asia Championships in September then go back to their mother clubs in October. They won’t have much of a rest all year round. It’ll be a big sacrifice for them.”
Toroman said Aguilar, recovering from an injury, will suit up for Gilas in the PBA second and third conferences. Whether he’ll be in the roster for the FIBA-Asia Championships depends on his performance in the PBA.
Playing in the PBA is a challenge and Toroman said there’s no backing down. “It’s a challenge for all of us,” he said. “For the players, it’s their chance to prove they deserve to play for the country.”
Toroman said the time has come for Gilas to produce results. “It’s no longer about a program, now it’s about performance,” he said. “Contracts are expiring this year. We’ve got to show results in the FIBA-Asia Championships. If we don’t qualify outright for London, we still have a chance in the qualifying tournament but that’s a more difficult route.”

If ever this happens, the 2011-2012 PBA draft may turn out to be one of the deepest rookie draft ever. It won't be as deep as perhaps the 1989 or 1999 or 2003 PBA drafts, but it will be enough to last until the second round...

so this means next year's dubai cup would feature new players to act as the core of the team(we'll be like having our 18 and under team participate for us-ravena and company-except greggyman and the other college gilas).
Gilas would again be in a developmental program with new and younger players but has better potentials than the previous core. Lets say those kids played in our junior NTs but playing in senior NT level isnt easy just like that as there is a giant gap between the level of game. They might even experience even more disaster than the present gilas squad. They will be younger by maturity and physically compared to when the first gilas core was formed who, most of the players were about to graduate and near their final year in college.
Will Marcus Douthit stay? or are we gonna find another young prospect for naturalization?

in all probability .... it would not be the U18 team as it would not be formed yet by that time based on past experience in the formation of our Youth Teams. If SBP have its its way, it would be the SINAG PILIPINAS. But if it would be SMART that's going to decide expect it to be Talk N Text, MERALCO or even one or a combination of the 3 MVP teams in the PBA D-League.

There’s life at the end of the tunnel for veteran slotman Marlou Aquino.
The 6-foot-9, former Rookie of the Year awardee's request to play for the Meralco Bolts anew was approved Monday, less than a week before the start of the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup.
Aquino, who was traded to the Barako Bull last conference, wrote a letter to the PBA Commissioner’s Office, signifying his intention to play for the Bolts. His request was granted by league commissioner Atty. Chito Salud, citing the cager’s and the rest of the Energy Boosters’ case as "a special one."
“We created a special ruling for Barako Bull players because their team is currently on leave of absence for the second conference. Those players who were not selected in the conditional dispersal draft were considered undrafted free agents," Salud told GMA News in a telephone interview.
The second-generation commissioner added that the PBA Commissioner’s Office created a special ruling for Barako Bull players as there’s already an existing provision which states that “a player who was traded can not go back to his previous team in less than a season."

Alaska traded Reynel Hugnatan in exchange for Hans Thiele and Paulo Bugia
Good trade for Alaska, bad one for Meralco. Hans Thiele should work well within Tim Cone's tight system while Paulo Bugia will end up to be a reserve who'll be fielded by Cone as the 11th or 12th man off the bench. Thiele has plenty of upside at this point, being young and athletic, and he is expected to deliver the same output as Hugnatan has given to the team over the years.
Of course, i suspect Bugia's addition in this mix was brought about by salary factors. The combined salary of Bugia and Thiele may be the approximate amount of what Hugnatan is presently receiving with the Aces.
Hugnatan's reported injuries may not be ideal for Meralco plus it increases the Bolts' average age even further. What's the difference of Hugnatan and Thiele, age-wise? 12 years? Hugnatan can still provide a season or two of solid play but it's all downhill from there. Thiele would have been the team's backup power forward for the next 5 seasons and can be upgraded to the starter ranks along the way...

Maybe Meralco, an MVP team, agreed to this trade to somehow soften the hearts of the Aces management. Toroman wants Thoss and De Vance to be part of Gilas but Alaska reportedly refused to release them.

I rather think it could also be a "one step backward, two steps forward" move. Do remember if Meralco fail to improve its standings for the next 2 conferences, they would be contenders for the top picks in the coming Rookie Draft which will now feature the SMART GILAS players plus several other star collegiate players.

The tandem of Joaqui Trillo and Tim Cone are really good in making trades that sway more to their favor.
I do remember Jaworski really mad after Ginebra gotten from Alaska, Bong Solomon who is actually damaged goods already.

i idolizes the management of alaska in terms of trading players..first they done it to acquire miller from tnt and shifted the thriller in exchange of baguio when the thriller have a sub par performance. alaska is the opposite of air 21 who is trading their main men to the other teams

It's possible, Nardy.
But we also have to consider the intricacies of the drafting process. Note that the placings in the AFC carries twice the weight compared to import-flavored ones. And since this will now be a 3-conference setup, my understanding is that the AFC placings will merit two points while the two conferences will earn half a point each to determine the rankings.
Hence, with Meralco ending up in the Top 8 of the standings, they may have a solid chance of earning any of the top 3 picks in the draft. Powerade and Barako would be favored to win top pick honors.

Alaska won in that trade. Getting a young and athletic Theile for an aging and injury-prone Hugnatan. Gregorio, though, could have traded Thiele for Hugnatan to add toughness in his team. They got older as a team, though.
We'll see if this trade will make good for both teams in this conference.

maybe MVP and Alaska management agreed to this to give way for the lending of a joe devance from alaska to gilas coz i think the 2 acquisition of alaska is the same position what big joe will be leaving if he joins gilas...

If the shoe fits..
Just imagine how much TNT?MVP is giving up for the NT, yet TNT still won the championship..
Well, this is Meralco, and they are taking a step backwards..
Credit Alaska for using their leverage to get a good young player.
It's the only way for them to survive..the only competitive team that's not SMC-MVP (coz face it, ROS is going to the dogs if they trade NOrwood..even if they don't, YG doesn't know how to properly use him. He just wasted him in the 2009 NT). Air 21 is the new farm team, and Powerade is like their pawn shop..

Alaska will definitely be a loser the next 2 conference. Hugnatan can easily cover the import of the opposing teams especially with the huge frames of gins, b-meg and tnt imports. There is no way that Joe Devance a defensive liability covers the opposing imports and Sonny Thoss still has to clog the lanes and battle the other centers of other teams so the way i see it.. for 2 conferences a year Alaska will be in trouble and as it shows it doesnt have the horses to battle Tnt, Smb and the gins talent in an all filipino conference.

well, if you said is true, then Alaska is in win-win situation. they have a bigger chance to acquire the best from gilas boys. the draft picks will always been - "the more you lose, the mor chances you can grab the best rookies in the draft".

Now I get it. Tim Cone has this propensity for drafting/acquiring players that are Fil-Foreign. He drafted the likes of Alex Araneta, Mike Cortez, Brandon Cablay, Eugene Tejada, Kelvin Dela Pena and Mike Burtscher to name a few. And acquired thru free agency or trades the likes of Bong Hawkins, Jeff Cariaso, Ali Peek, EJ Feihl, Sonny Thoss, Willie Miller, Joe Devance and now Hans Thiele. Back in 2003, Alaska had an all "Fil-Foreign" lineup.

huh? sorry for the comment but for me that's a wrong assement... the guy can't even play the 3 solidly coz he's trained to be a 4 guy.... yes he can be athletic for a 6'4 guy but not even close even for a jc intal as a 3... he can dunk and he can hit some outside shot but i think he has slow release on his shot plus i think can't even slash w/a true shooting guard or a true small forward guarding him coz he lacks dribbling ability for that... maybe more practice to be a small forward and so much practice for a 2...

You might have a point there based on his PBA performance under the Triangle Offense system of Tim Cone. But that is not how he played when he was still with the UE Warriors or the time he played in the PBL, he had the freedom to play from 2 to 5 positions by his coaches and he played credibly. And I must admit before entering the PBA he also lost his shooting touch when he was with the Philippine Patriots in the ABL as he was asked to sacrifice his offense and concentrate more on defense as they have Gabe Freeman and Jason Dixon to do the scoring.

Boracay wants PBA All-Stars
IF PLANS do not miscarry, pro league stars will invade the world-class beaches of Boracay for the All-Stars weekend in May.
Pro league Chairman Rene Pardo yesterday said Aklan provincial officials have made "strong" representations to hold the PBA summer spectacle in the popular tourist resort.
"They’re still arranging it but they are a prime candidate dahil interesadong-interesado ang mga taga-Aklan," Pardo told Malaya in a phone interview.
Only few minor kinks need to be sorted out before the PBA holds its first-ever All-Stars event in Boracay.
"Nagkakaroon ng power problems duon at the height of summer and, of course, there’s the question of whether there will be television coverage. Pero kapag na-assure kami na walang problema at okay ang lahat malamang sa Boracay na nga," said Pardo.
Since it was institutionalized in 1989, the PBA All-Stars has made stops in Iloilo, Cebu and Bacolod but never in Aklan made world famous by Boracay and its beaches of fine, white sand. The island, located some two kilometers off the northwest corner of Panay, is also haven to snorkeling, windsurfing, kite boarding and enthusiasts of dragon boat and beach volleyball.
Aside from the centerpiece North-South event, Rookies-Sophomores Blitz game, slam dunk and three-point shootouts, the PBA’s weekend festivities include street parties and cleanups. Pardo said this time could be different.
"Siguro instead of street cleaning, beach cleaning naman," he stated.
Games could to be held at the Boracay Convention Center that can accommodate 3,000 people and located inside the Boracay Ecovillage Resort.

On the other hand, it is possible that with his new appointment in SMC sports, Noli will make things hard for Smart Gilas. Despite the press releases, we all know that he was sacked by MVP and was only given a graceful exit. This could be the best opportunity for him to get back at Frankie Lim, et al.

Would you trade your new sports cars for an older sedan that you know has problems and has seen better days?
One used to detonate dynamite danny
One's okay to slice through fruits galore
One was faster to trigger Alaminos Assassin
but would you trade these for something new?
One's got a double double game 2nd draft pick
One carried national pride 3rd draft pick
One was the quiet one top draft pick
THere's something about the deal they will definitely hide.
Lopsided? Perhaps. We'll know soon enough.
After the day of pinoy power, we'll know if they'll call their bluff.
but as per the tweets .... it looks like even Coach Jong is now complaining.
I wonder who is now orchestrating the movements .... sino kaya?

Do I see MVP "interfering" in this potential blockbuster trade featuring a San Miguel team or teams and Air 21? If the protagonists involved will include Rabeh Al-Husseini and Noynoy Baclao, who're also coveted by the MVP teams, will he step into the picture and discuss things with business partner at Burger King, Bert Lina?

if this is true and would push true, then it is a direct mockery of the true essence why a rookie draft is being done.
might as well not play actual games anymore so that we could save money fand just give the trophy to San Miguel.

My theory here is that no San Miguel / Ginebra / B-Meg player who has shown loyalty to their respective teams (probably 5 years or more) will be moved out of the conglomerate. They may be traded, but to a sister team. They may want to get the services of Al-Husseini and Baclao from Air 21 but they probably would give up draft picks and newer players in the process. Hence, the two Danny's, Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Pena, Eric Menk, Rudy Hatfield, James Yap, JJ Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, among others, may stay with the conglomerate instead of ending up playing for the Express. Besides, I doubt if Air 21 can afford what they're receiving from RSA's teams so the most likely options would be the "cheaper" players or their draft picks.

actually, if SMB really wanted to, they can continue to pay for the traded players salary even if they are playing for Air21 as exposed on the salary debacle in Barako. Of course it would be expensive but doing so would secure them of the said talents that is also being eyed by other teams.

Rumors will remain as rumor until the truth comes out in the open, so I find it senseless to speculate if we cannot see any basis for these rumor. But one thing I would like to see if any of these trade will happen is that Air21 should just disband or leave the league because it will be very obvious that they are not there to strengthen their lineup or win titles but they are there just to get a good position in the draft so that they can get players which they can later sell or trade to give them money from their act. What an embarrassment they are giving to the league! This kind of practice sucks!!!!

I think Patricia Hizon may be referring to a GINEBRA-AIR 21 trade. Let me share my guess:
One used to detonate ----Hatfield (H-Bomb)..
One's okay to slice through-----Caguioa (sounds like 'hiwa' or slice) :-)
One was faster to trigger----Mamaril (Billy the Kid - a gunman or sounds like 'baril' ) :-)
but would you trade these for something new?
One's got a double double game ----Baclao (double double stats maybe)
One carried national pride ----Al Hussaini (played for Gilas)
One was the quiet one ----Guevarra (did not make any 'noise' last conf. compared to his 2 fellow rooks)
That's just my take.

This is fun :D
My take on this:
Would you trade your new batteries for my old and used ones?
Would you trade your new sports cars for an older sedan that you know has problems and has seen better days?
This only means that OLD GUYS will be traded for YOUNG GUNS
A reliable insider from PEX informed us that these blockbuster trades won't just involve two teams. Based on the tweets/status/comments of:
Jong Uichico ("If this SMB trade rumor points to our Aquino and Wilson. Sorry, sila na lang future namin kukunin pa"),
Paul Artadi ("Trades for our team coming.. I feel it.. Upgrade ***.. Getting younger I think.."),
Snow Badua ("Sorry SMB fans---- can't give you updates on your team. Coaches & management don't answer my call.") and the
Commissioner's Office ("As of 4 PM February 23, 2011. No application for trade involving SMB has so far been transmitted to my office.")
I believe that the parties involved would be SMB, Air 21, and BGK.
Finally, Pong Escobal, Lordy Tugade & Marlou Aquino cannot be traded until after the 3rd conference pursuant to the rules laid out byCommisioner Salud for players taken in the Barako Bulls Dispersal Draft.
With these, let me speculate:
One used to detonate -
SMB: Danny Seigle ("Dynamite") or
BGK: Rudy Hatfield ("H-Bomb")
(Both are "old sedans" that have seen better days)
One's okay to slice through -
SMB: Dorian Peña (you slice through fruit, and the fruit that comes to mind is Piña). Could not be Joseph Yeo because although he is an excellent slasher/slicer, he IS NOT an older sedan.
One was faster to trigger -
SMB: Danny I (Lakay/FPJ Connection?) or
SMB: Dondon Hontiveros (an "old sedan" known for his sniping)
but would you trade these for something new?
One's got a double double game -
Air 21: Rabeh (almost 20/10 average)
One carried national pride -
Air 21: Know-Noy (played for Philippine Patriots) or
Air 21: Rey Guevarra (played for Smart Gilas)
One was the quiet one -
BGK: Jimbo Aquino (never heard anything about him) or
Air 21: Know-Noy (widely known for this)
THere's something about the deal they will definitely hide -

Air21 is into Professional Basketball not because of its sporting side but due to its business side of things .... like any shrewd businessman, they're here to earn money nothing else. Otherwise they should have setted-up a charitable institution if their purpose is just to give away money.
With the bigger teams from moneyed corporation willing to shell out money to buy themselves all the best players available, these mid-sized companies are just very happy to cash on such deals, its a matter of survival in these times when business is not really that booming.

great analysis Mr. lovejones.
I do believe when the said trade was being brainstormed by management, 2 SMC teams are really involved the Beermen and Ginebra in order to get the quality pieces of Air21. SMC is getting ready for the future, so they need to get younger and since their teams would probably be in the lower half of the picking order of the coming PBA Draft which would most likely involve the Smart Gilas players, they are already assuming they'll just get the bread crumbs of said draft so the best way to get the best young talent is via a trade from a willing trade partner who's young assets are more or less already tested in the PBA environment as compared to those that has to pass the coming Draft. But Uichico seems to have it enough of not having a say so he is now voicing out his sentiment if such a move is made. Could be the movements were engineered by someone who is not really well-liked and is coming into the proud giant corporation as a unwelcomed newcomer boss.
