The one man we have come to love :D - SUSMARYOSEP! IKAW NANG MAGING DANNY SEIGLE!
yes the one who ironically coined this parting words:
"NOBODY DOES IT BETTER THAN THE PBA"
so after sometime of him bashing the PBA and people connected in the PBA also bashing him .... now he's back with vengeance.

Air21 is into Professional Basketball not because of its sporting side but due to its business side of things .... like any shrewd businessman, they're here to earn money nothing else. Otherwise they should have setted-up a charitable institution if their purpose is just to give away money.
With the bigger teams from moneyed corporation willing to shell out money to buy themselves all the best players available, these mid-sized companies are just very happy to cash on such deals, its a matter of survival in these times when business is not really that booming.
Yeah! You're right. But the practice they're doing is making a mockery of the sport and the desire of many fans to create equality in the league. Otherwise if only one or two teams will benefit from these trades then it's better that they put up a league or a tournament involving only these two teams and then let the fans watch them if they would like to see who's the better team between them. No need to include other second rate teams.

actually from what I gotten from reliable sources within the SMC group, the original plan was a 3-team trade transaction wherein Air21 is a conduit between Ginebra and San Miguel Beer. And the final configuration would have the following players:
Danny Siegle from SMB going to BGK
JC Intal from BGK going to Air21
Nonoy Baclao from Air21 going to SMB
John Wilson from BGK going to Air21
Rey Guevarra from Air 21 going to BGK
Jimbo Aquino from BGK going to SMB
Mick Pennisi from SMB going to Air21
Rabeh Al-Husseini from Air 21 going to SMB
Dorian Pena from SMB going to BGK
No wonder Coach Jong is pissed-off.
This also comply with the theory of Jay P. Mercado that SMC protects those who are loyal.

I'll surely be pissed-off, think of a team with Miller, Caguiao, Danny S, Tubid and Helterbrand. Who would Cortez pass to? hahaha! At least they unloaded 2 guards and got bigger with the Man-mountain tropical fruit.

If this would be the scenario, Ginebra would lose youngsters JC Intal, John Wilson and Jimbo Aquino. And Jong Uichico would have to deal with aging veterans Danny Seigle and Dorian Pena to add to a team already loaded with dinosaurs (Hatfield, Caguioa, Helterbrand, Miller and Menk). :D
The big winner here (if this pushes thru) will be SMB as they will be receiving a trio of collegiate MVPs; Nonoy Baclao (2008 UAAP Finals MVP), Rabeh Al-Hussaini (2009 UAAP Finals MVP) and Jimbo Aquino (2009 NCAA Finals MVP).

well not Ato Agustin as he gotten his line-up much younger and gotten a bonus by acquiring his boy from Baste - Jimbo Aquino. With Aquino and Nonoy Baclao, they'll be ready when Dondon and Danny I retires. And of course they had their Center Position fully secured. With Siegle (and Hontiveros soon) gone they could use Yeo and Sunday more. The team would be pretty balanced can very well challenge what Talk N Text can offer.
JayWash-Arwind-Rabeh-Dondon-Cabagnot would be the First Five to beat.

If that's the case, then they might as well do the move wherein Dondon swap places with James Yap .... that might as swell seal the deal as the team to beat.

Here's something to screw our minds anew:
Fidel Mangonon III twitted a minute ago:
"SMB & TNT? 3 for 3?"
Then Maki replied:
"smb and air21 po ata. =)"
Snow Badua answered back:
COMMISSIONER SALUD: "Wala pa rin namang dumarating sa office ko na SMB trade proposal. Mamayang hapon tawagan mo ko ulit."
AIR 21 MGMT: "We categorically deny any trade involvement of our team IN THE MEANTIME. To set the record straight, WE ARE NOT TALKING TO SMB!"
So now TNT has entered the picture (to protect MVP's investments in BNoy Rabs perhaps?) This is slowly unfolding like a grand pinoy telenovela. Much better than the Melo and DWill trades in NY and NJ :D

have similarities with what happened to MERALCO
remember when almost everybody thought that Ramon Ang had MERALCO in the bag, MVP made some behind the scene negotiation with the Lopezes which caught SMC by surprised as all of the sudden they were empty handed while MVP was holding the bag in the end.
it would not surprise me that Pato Gregorio talked to his brother Allan and instead of dealing with the over side that Air21 should be dealing with them.
What you said it would be 3-on-3, well I do see those 4 committed to SMART GILAS is on the protected list. But I do feel Dillinger and Carey might not be safe.
But how about Air21 getting Gilbert Lao, Emerson Oreta and Mark Yee for Al-Husseini, Baclao and Guevarra .... that would definitely beat any one-sided deal San Miguel can offer. Try to beat that :D
But Bert Lina would surely love the cash part of the deal (with more under the table) ;)

Ariel has a point, there is no doubt there is more Beer drinkers than Gin drinkers so obviously Beer sales are bigger and it gives more profits than Gin. If GINEBRA is such a money maker, I do not think the Palanca family would have sold La Tondena.

Hopefully for the sake of the many GINEBRA fans and the PBA as a whole but knowing Jong Uichico, he has been a loyal employee and does not question management, but him reacting agrily like that means something is not right.
Talked to a number of Sports Media friends and people from different teams and they confirmed something is really cooking but team officials would not come out in the open because the on-going negotiations are really confidential and delicate. Lets just wait on how things will turn out.

Vets for young turks: Beermen, Express to swap players
REY JOBLE, GMA News
02/25/2011 | 02:12 AM
San Miguel Beer’s Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, Joseph Yeo and a 2011 first round pick for the Air21 Express’ top three rookie picks — Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra?
Odd it may seem, but a deal between the Beermen and the Express has already been agreed in principle.
A highly-placed source who has knowledge in the transaction told GMA News that the two-team, seven-player deal is now up for approval of PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud.
Whether it will be approved by Salud or not remains to be seen. The league commissioner has revised several trade deals, which is part of his mission of "avoiding lopsided trades."
GMA News tried to call Salud for confirmation, but he cannot be reached as of press time.
The deal was made despite denials from Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio and Express coach Bong Ramos.
“I don’t know anything about that, unless there’s something being worked out without our knowledge," said Gregorio in a telephone interview.
Ramos said otherwise.
“I know lumalapit talaga yung SMB, pero hindi ko gusto yung inaalok," added Ramos.
Amidst this latest blockbuster trade deal, Ramos was happy to welcome comebacking Leo Avenido in the PBA.
Avenido, one of the top performers in the ASEAN Basketball League, was taken in by the Express as their 13th member.
“I think he deserves a spot in the PBA after his stellar performance in the ABL. I think he’s the best ASEAN player in the league," said Ramos on Avenido.
A former PBA player, Avenido played for the Brunei Barracudas in the ABL coached by Ramos. - GMA News

something's off with this trade. i hope this is not true or at least the commissioner won't approve this one. parity anyone? oh well, this is the PBA. everything happens if the price is right. sheesh.

IMO it's not like the PBA is the one who is solely to blame here, when you think about it, the ones that are bringing in huge money to the league are the MVP and SMC teams. When asked, which teams usually has the most fans in the PBA, they are the triad of the SMC teams. MVP on the other hand is trying to emulate the success that the SMC triad has achieved. from an organizational standpoint the PBA currently has 9 teams 3 from which are from the SMC group and 2 are from MVP. those two groups alone make up for over 50 percent of the current members of the league.
As a private business, The PBA must make sure that it pleases the majority of it's stake holders, (MVP and SMC). And while this may seem ungrateful for the PBA, but the fans will always be there as long as the SMC triad will continue to be competitive.
now let's just speculate for a moment here, what if PBA did stand up to MVP and the SMC about their shady deals? and it severed the ties between the 3 groups? much like what happened to Tanduay. T he rift would be so severe that the SMC and MVP teams decide to leave the PBA and start a league of their own, they have the fan base and the money to topple the PBA in an instant.
A probable solution for this is for the PBA to invite more companies that are willing to invest and make a competitive team in the PBA, Think of it as a numbers game, since MVP and SMC basically cancel or compliment each other, the teams that are left to fight off. against this group is RoS and Alaska(notice how I didn't include powerade and air21). with more teams standing alongside RoS and Alaska, it would be harder for SMC and MVP to flex their organizational muscle since they won't be holding the majority of the League, and would have to combat more flak from the other team owners.
for the meantime, the best that the PBA could do, (metaphorically speaking) is to make the pill a lot easier to swallow. Comm Salud has done this by revising some of the trades that has transpired earlier this year. Sure, the trade was still one sided for the most part but it's better than giving up Ronjay Buenafe forMeralco's practice player.
And if ever SMC wants to shrug some of the bad reputation that they've gotten from these trades, then they should be more willing to help the NT team. I believe that this has been MVP's scapegoat for doing those lopsided trades with Asi and probably Kelly as well. This is probably the reason that Mr. Uytengsu has been somewhat unwilling to lend his players to the NT, he is probably thinking, " there's another team here in the PBA that is basically stuffed with the best players in the land, why would you even ask from me when I only have a couple of them, when there is a team who is basically filled with the players you are looking for?"

This one should tweak one's interest. Rey Joble is one of the most credible PBA sportswriters today so I don't doubt the veracity of this report. So I'll treat this like gospel truth.
What makes it interesting is that the trade seemed to be a done deal, pending approval from the Commissioner's Office. So that means the trade proposal has been signed by Air 21 and SMB officials already and that this has been sent to the Commissioner's Office for approval. The question is - why are Allan Gregorio and Bong Ramos denying this report? Is it because they really don't know - and that this matter was discussed by their bosses? Or is it because the two aren't confirming anything until this is approved?
I'll go out on a limb here - if Salud ends up approving this trade, his credibility will suffer massively. Salud has earned so much goodwill and trust over the past couple of months with his sage decision-making and his ability to be independent from the PBA Board. But if ever this trade is approved, he'll take the heat here for not protecting the league's interest. Add to the fact that Salud's dad, Rudy, who used to work as legal counsel for Danding Cojuangco, will never find himself dissociated from this connection.
You have the top 3 draft picks of this year's draft being given away for two aging veterans closed to retirement, an exciting slasher in Joseph Yeo but who could hardly find playing time for the Beermen, and a first round pick which is projected to be the 9th or 10th overall, being traded for a double-double blue-chip player, a defensive big man who is one of the league leaders in rebounds, and a young, promising guard capable of jacking up points if given the opportunity. From the onset, you know this is one-sided. The three young turks are key members of Air 21, while the three players from San Miguel may have average playing times that will not even match Rabeh Al-Husseini's playing time per game. How can this be fair?
Salud must be in a dilemma now. One option he can do is to tweak the deal and include a couple more draft picks and / or other players in the mix to get the deal consummated and make it fair. However, we all know that it was San Miguel who pushed this deal with Air 21, and from how it looks like, this is what SMB is only willing to give up. The only option really left is for him to reject the trade deal. This is the correct way. And the only way.

It is because Allan Gregorio has some similarities with Chino Trinidad who was an absentee Commissioner for the PBL, Allan is an absentee Team Manager because he is more preoccupied with his job as the ("Chief") Assistant Coach of Rajko Toroman at SMART GILAS. There are talks that even if Lito Alvarez is the Customs commissioner, he still has a say in the affairs of Air21 including that of its PBA basketball team, so I would not be surprised if this deal was again the brainchild of Alvarez and had the blessing of Team Owner Bert Lina.
It does not matter that Alvarez is already a High Government Official or that by law they are required to divest themselves from private companies because we know here in the Philippines, many things happen behind the scenes which are hidden from the public eye and are kept private as secret dealings.

actually from what I gotten from reliable sources within the SMC group, the original plan was a 3-team trade transaction wherein Air21 is a conduit between Ginebra and San Miguel Beer. And the final configuration would have the following players:
Danny Siegle from SMB going to BGK
JC Intal from BGK going to Air21
Nonoy Baclao from Air21 going to SMB
John Wilson from BGK going to Air21
Rey Guevarra from Air 21 going to BGK
Jimbo Aquino from BGK going to SMB
Mick Pennisi from SMB going to Air21
Rabeh Al-Husseini from Air 21 going to SMB
Dorian Pena from SMB going to BGK
No wonder Coach Jong is pissed-off.
This also comply with the theory of Jay P. Mercado that SMC protects those who are loyal.
hmmm .... there might have been some truth that it was originally a 3-team trade deal but since Jong Uichico protested they have to adjust it to a 2-team transaction.
We have to put into consideration that Jong is among the longest serving and most loyal employee/coach/player in the basketball teams of Danding Cojuangco's group. He gone really way back up to being a Greenie at La Salle Green Hills in the NCAA Juniors competitions in the 1970s.

Red Bull’s PBA return possible
Beth Celis
In Huddle
First Posted 02:02:10 23/02/2011
It was an invitation I could not turn down, even if Tuesday was my busiest day of the week. I had a column to write, a pile of bills to pay, and this particular Tuesday, a big feast to prepare for the following day.
“Boss George is inviting you for lunch at the Chinese restaurant of the Crowne Towers, I hope you’re available,” said Raffy Casyao, George’s trusted lieutenant and the alternate governor of the PBA’s Barako Coffee team which had taken a leave of absence this conference to give way to the stint of Smart Gilas.
Boss George is of course George Chua, owner of the energy food and drinks franchise, and if I remember correctly, in the 10 seasons that his ballclub had been in the PBA, this is the first time that I am being invited to lunch at a restaurant.
Not that George is tight with money. He’s just the exact opposite. Only, George is what you might call a “homebody.” He likes to entertain where he feels safest and most comfortable and that’s the penthouse of his West avenue office in Quezon City, and later the ground floor lounge of his new place of business in Cainta where he transferred.
***
For his Red Bull team and for us members of the fourth estate, George certainly provided lots of good times and plenty of lasting memories.
Seldom will you find a nicer and more generous man who was almost always the first to send a check when somebody needed medical or other forms of financial assistance. He also hardly ever turned down a solicitation for sponsorship.
George’s palms were always open, as long as he had the resources.
***
With the emergence of digital technology howebver, George’s umbrella company Photokina, which was into photo finishing, fell into difficult times. At about the same time, another company, Energy Food and Drinks Inc, which was the exclusive distributor of Red Bull Energy Drink products in the Philippines, was prompted to file a legal case against TC Pharmaceuticals Industries Co., manufacturer of Red Bull in Thailand.
After 15 years, TC terminated the contract with Energy Food and Drinks without cause and awarded the Philippine franchise to Maryland Distributors Inc. With the termination of the contract, the Red Bull team could not operate as it used to since a big portion its budget came from Red Bull Thailand.
In spite of his dire predicament, George would not abandon his passion for basketball, which he now admits is his second love next to football the sport he played in college.
Starting 2008, he was forced to run the team on a modest budget and as expected, the team’s performance plummeted to bottom last in the last two seasons.
Red Bull was always on top in its first eight years. It had seven consecutive semifinals appearances from 2004 to 2008, two runner-up and several third place finishes and three championship finishes.
***
George was with his son Michael, Raffy and two other gentlemen when he appeared at the Crowne Plaza Hotel yesterday. He had just been to Eastwood for an important business meeting he said, still catching his breath.
“I have my hands full these days. We’re opening a new business, but this is not a consumer item,” George sounded very upbeat.
Have I read the business section of the day’s papers (that day), he wanted to know?
“We won our court case. Judge Santiago Arenas of the Regional Trial Court branch 217 in Quezon City has issued a preliminary injunction restraining TC Pharmaceuticals from terminating Energy Food and Drinks Inc as exclusive distributor of Red Bull in the Philippines.”
“Does that mean Red Bull will be back in the PBA next conference?”, I asked him.
“That’s a possibility,” he replied. “We could reactivate. There are three options. Smart Gilas could continue to use our slot until the third conference—that’s the second option, while the third is, we can sell the franchise if there’s a good offer.”

Vets for young turks: Beermen, Express to swap players
REY JOBLE, GMA News

- GMA News
this deal maybe a first round pick or a salvacion or ildefonso or pena away for being a fair deal...
for me seigle will have a renewed life in air21 plus pennisi if will be given minutes as a back up center for jr reyes... un nga lang they are giving away their future but if comm salud revise this trade by adding a player or a draft pick, this is ok...

SMB coach mum on trade talks, discloses imports on backup list
02/24/2011 | 09:28 PM
The San Miguel Beer coaching staff has remained silent over reports that the team is unloading some of its veteran players in exchange for young talents.
But the Beermen disclosed plans to possibly tap either of two imports currently on their backup list.
Sacramento State Hornets stalwart Jason Davis and former Seattle Supersonics draftee David Young head the list of backup imports of the Beermen, who are currently reinforced by Ira Brown.
Brown failed to impress the San Miguel coaching staff, prompting them to look for other candidates.
"They are the two players on our priority list," San Miguel coach Ato Agustin told GMA News. "But I would like to make it clear that Brown is also improving in our tune-up games and practices. We told him about the role of the import in the PBA, and he’s adjusting. Still, kailangan pa rin naming talaga ng backup."
The 25-year-old Davis is listed as a 6-foot-5 small forward. He played college ball for the Sacramento State Hornets where he averaged 7.4 points and 4.3 rebounds in 21 games in the 2007-2008 season.
A player with a decent touch from the perimeter, Davis played in Portugal where he averaged 14.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game and appeared in the Portuguese Leage All-Star Game two years ago.
Young is also listed as a 6-foot-5 swingman.
Drafted in the NBA in 2004 by the Sonics (now known as the Oklahoma Thunder) and signed to a contract but waived a month later, Young played in Greece, where he led the league in scoring with an average of 20.5 points per game while suiting up for Trikala.
A cousin of American Football player Leon Washington of the Seattle Seahawks, Young also played in the NBA D-League where he finished the season second in scoring average with 18.5 points per game.
Agustin, however, explained that Brown, who finished second in the Mexican League with a 25-point average per game, will play in the Beermen’s game against the Air21 Express on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
"Whether Brown will stay for good or play for a few games depends on his performance, of course," added Agustin, one of the league’s 25 Greatest Players.
But Agustin shrugs off trade rumors involving his veteran players.
"Wala, wala akong alam dyan. Wala akong nababalitaan," said Agustin. - KY, JVP, Rey Joble, GMA News

PBA RUMORS: SMB and Air21 Swapping Players?
Championship experience for New Blood if this pushes through
By BRIAN YALUNG
February 25, 2011, 11:49am
MANILA, Philippines - If ever this rumor is true, it can be deemed an exchange of experience for youth.
Rumors of a San Miguel Beer trade have been afloat the past days and while there were hints and leads coming from various sports sites, actual names have now surfaced.
However, do remember that this is unofficial for now. If the player names are true or unless the trade gets disapproval from the PBA office, you can expect Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi and Joseph Yeo to switch places with Air21’s top three picks in Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra.
The deal reportedly also includes a 2011 first round draft pick by the Beermen to even out the deal. The deal is said to be now up for approval at the PBA commissioner’s office.
Curiously, both teams will be facing each other in tonight’s main game (http://mb.com.ph/articles/306111/tnt-gets-first-crack-gilas-air21-vs-smb). If the players concerned do not suit up or are used sparingly, chances are this deal has gotten the nod of PBA Commissioner Atty. Chito Salud.
The Beermen are still licking their wounds after being beaten by Talk ‘N Text in previous PBA Philippine Cup championship and one glaring weakness was a reliable big man in the middle.
Seigle has been on and off the injury list, Pennisi had been ineffective since new coach Ato Agustin took over and Joseph Yeo wasn’t able to shine the way he did with Sta. Lucia due to limited playing time.
The three carry champion experience and should be an amiable starting unit for new Air21 head coach Bong Ramos. Ramos previously coached in the ABL for the Brunei Barracudas.
For the Beermen, they get a much needed lift on the defensive end with the entry of the rookie trio. SMB is loaded with firepower and reinforcing their defensive unit should help their cause.
Again, the deal has not yet been consummated. There could be modifications on the players involved or worse, disapproved by the PBA altogether.

Which begs the question, in tonight's main game between SMB and Air 21, who'll be wearing whose uniform?
Since it was not approved by Comm Salud as of yesterday, it should be status quo and the players should still play with their original teams tonight.
But the respective team managements could order their coaching staff to either not field or use sparingly the involved players while awaiting the PBA's approval. It is to avoid possible injuries for the participating player as an injury could possibly void whatever the teams had already agreed upon among themselves.
But if the PBA made its approval today, the players had to sit it out for today's game and suit-up for their new teams on their next game.

If ever the rumored SMB-Air21 trade pushes thru with the PBA Commissioners approval, this thus somewhat verifies the notion that the San Miguel Group prioritizes the Beermen over the more popular Ginebra and BMeg teams. Both the Barangay Ginebra Kings and Derby Ace Llamados needs more the upgrade than San Miguel Beer but instead what they did is further strengthen Coach Ato Agustin's team.
Even though Hector Calma, Samboy Lim and Alvin Patrimonio are the respective managers of the SMC teams, everybody in the basketball community it is Robert Non, the Head of San Miguel Corporations Basketball Operations who really calls the shots.

To be fair to the fans, the trade should be number 1 for number 1.
If SMC is dead serious in acquiring Baclao and Al-Hussaini, they should throw in Washington and Ildefonso.
Baclao & Al-Hussaini for Washington & Ildefonso.
All are top draft picks. Baclao and Washington are power forwards while Al-Hussaini and Ildefonso are centers.

would not happen as Danny I is set to retire soon and like Olsen Racela is among the most loved by the 'Boss'.
San Miguel had made long strides to keep him all these years, after a successful PBL and National Team career, applied for the PBA draft despite being underage. This prompted the PBA to change their age limit rules. Even as Ildefonso entered the PBA draft, he also signed a contract to play for the Pangasinan Presidents of the newly-formed Metropolitan Basketball Association. Ildefonso was eventually drafted first-pick overall by Formula Shell in the 1998 PBA Draft, but was traded to San Miguel for the Beermen's second overall pick, Noy Castillo, and cash. The SMC franchise wanted the promising youngster in their ranks to be the future cornerstone of the team and this forced them to buy out his MBA contract.
Then San Miguel proded then PBA Commissioner (the late) Jun Bernardino to disallow Tanduay (Lucio Tan Group)'s celebrated 16-year, R96 million offer sheet to then PBA MVP Danny Ildefonso. It was a mind boggling contract:
basic pay
500k per month for 16 years = 96 million
if player cap increases he also gets it
game allowances
50,000 elims quarters
60,000 semis
70,000 finals
5,000 increase every year thereafter
5 million per mvp
1 million plus car worth 3 million per bpc
team performance per conference
1 month quarters 2 months semis 4 months finals 6 months championship
stats performance per conference
top 10 in scoring rebounding shotblocking
1 million each
others
sportsmanship and all defense 1 million each
mvp of series 2 million plus car worth 3 million
1st team 1 million and car worth 3 million
2nd team 1 million and car worth 2 million
From people in the know, they said even if San Miguel did not give Danny I what Lucio Tan was offering, he got something better as he was given the sole dealership of its Beer and Coca-cola products in the province of Pangasinan. San Miguel Management is very satisfied with the performance of the said dealership thanks to the good business sense of Danny's wife Ren. Likewise Danny I has a poultry & piggery which supplies exclusively to Purefoods at Campo Carne. He is also an endorser of B-Meg's agri products. Ildefonso is no longer just a mere player of San Miguel but is a valued business partner. Thru the years he was fighting against injuries and San Miguel could have traded him for more younger players in the past but they did not, it is now almost sure Danny I would retire as a San Miguel Beerman.
On Jay Washington .... as of now, he is the top player of San Miguel. Despite their loss to Talk N Text in the last Championship, JayWash was their most consistent top performer. San Miguel never lets go of its current Top player more so if he is at his prime.

remarks: 50-50 I don't know...for me I hope this is true for BGK..they need Dorean Pena for a Center spot...he can be a big help for the kings..he can also play his remaining years for BGK 3-4 years from now..he is 33 now...
Rey Guevarra - a rookie..lots of potential for the pros...he can play a small forward like JC Intal...

just to make sure smb will give up a marquee player, Air 21 will just trade that marquee player to the other smc teams/ any other team..
if they are really bent on rabah / nonoy it does not posses any proble to smc but if not sorry smc you blew your chance:D:D

ito, galing FB....
The Commissioner suggested SMB to add a marquee player instead of a draft pick in the trade proposal of SMB-Air21.
Trade proposal B is:
Yeo, Mick, DS, Arwind = Rabeh, Noy, Guevarra.
DS will be shipped to BGK from Air 21 for Yancy De Ocampo and Jimbo Aquino, then Jimbo Aquino will be shipped to SMB for a draft pick. Then A...rwind Santos will be traded to Bmeg for Rico M. and rookie Pari Llagas.
thats PBA for u...

Air21 team owner denies board gov's resignation
REY JOBLE, GMA News
02/27/2011 | 04:58 PM
Is Johann Ramos, Air21’s board governor in the Philippine Basketball Association, stepping down from his post?
Air21 team owner Bert Lina squelched the speculation and clarified the matter with GMA News on Sunday.
“Hindi totoo ‘yan," said Lina in a telephone interview when asked about the report that Ramos has already resigned as board governor of the Express in the pro league.
http://images.gmanews.tv/downloads/rabeh.jpg
Rabeh Al-Hussaini
“I will be the one who will make the announcement if he will stay or not, so if you got that from a text message or somebody else, then that’s not true. Right now, status quo pa rin tayo with Johann," added Lina.
The speculation came on the heels of rumors that the Express are trading their top three rookie picks this season — Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra — for San Miguel Beermen’s veteran players Danny Seigle and Mick Pennisi as well as Joseph Yeo.
Ramos had been in the hospital for several days because of pneumonia, and was only released Saturday. He sent a text message the same day that "he has no knowledge on the trade and hasn’t signed any trade offers." GMA News repeatedly called up Ramos to confirm whether he has resigned or not, but there was no response from the young executive.
Decision on trade out soon
A league official confirmed that the trade offer signed by both the Express and the Beermen’s camp has already reached the PBA Commissioner’s Office.
http://images.gmanews.tv/downloads/baclao.jpg
Air21's top pick Nonoy Baclao is at the center
of trade talks as well.
“It was given to me after the game at the Ynares Center. By that time, the commissioner had already left the venue," said the source, who requested anonymity.
As of press time, PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud has yet to approve of any such transaction, news of which drew negative reactions when GMA News released it as early as Feb. 25.
Whether Salud will approve the trade, make a revision by adding another marquee player, or turn it down remains to be seen.
In his early tenure as head of the pro league, Salud has made several revisions on trades, a move which he said he did "to avoid lopsided transactions."
A basketball observer who refused to be identified said that Jay Washington, San Miguel Beer’s marquee player, should be included in the equation.
“That’s because the value of Washington and Al-Hussaini are the same as far as their respective teams are concerned," said the observer. “Al-Hussaini is the future of Air21 and is the next most important big man in the PBA, while Washington is one of the most consistent players of San Miguel." - KY, GMA News

Is Rabeh Worth Trading for?
By BRIAN YALUNG
February 28, 2011, 2:00am
MANILA, Philippines – Days have passed and nothing concrete has come out from the rumored PBA trade (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306223/pba-rumors-smb-and-air21-swapping-players) in the works between the San Miguel Beermen and the Air21 Express.
While the trade proposal is reportedly already in the hands of the PBA Commissioner Atty. Chito Salud, it will only be a matter of time now before we see if this trade will materialize or not.
The only thing out in the open right now is that San Miguel is making a go for the top three picks of Air21, Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra. In exchange, the Beermen have originally offered veterans Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, Joseph Yeo and a 2011 draft pick.
The PBA has reportedly asked a revision on the trade. Unconfirmed reports have it that Jay Washington has been mentioned for inclusion in the trade since he and Al-Hussaini are of the “same” value.
Which brings you to ask, is this claim true? Washington has proven his worth ever since joining the San Miguel camp and winning back-to-back PBA Best Player of the conference just recently.
Al-Hussaini, the former King Eagle has been impressive thus far and is considered the future of the PBA. However, Rabeh’s history maybe something worth checking.
Prior to the PBA Draft, it was learned that Al-Hussaini was intentionally picked second to give him a lesson in humility.
As reported here on Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/node/274823/rabeh-get) in August of 2010, his star complex had reportedly grated many of his peers and other basketball officials.
Baclao was made the first pick followed by Al-Hussaini.
Rabeh called the move an “insult” and couldn’t accept playing second fiddle to his Ateneo teammate, Baclao. However all that was buried and Al-Hussaini practiced hard (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/274959/rabeh-baclao-report-practice) and has been a force for the Express team.
With all those factors put on the table, is Rabeh worth trading for on the part of San Miguel Beer?
There is no denying that the SMB franchise has aging players and the search for young marquee players to carry on the winning tradition is high on their list. Brace yourselves for a hellacious week as we await the official decision on this trade between San Miguel and Air21.

Huge development indeed, if this is indeed being considered. While this is not the first time that SMC had 4 franchises in the PBA (they had 4 when Coke, which was still under their management, bought Cosmos from the Concepcions in 2002), this is still a major breakthrough in the league. Considering that MVP is allegedly the frontrunner in the Barako franchise sweepstakes, that would mean that if this deal, as well as MVP's with the Chuas, pushes through, then 70% of the PBA roster would be owned by two major companies. I don't know if this duopoly setup would work, but the silver lining is that we may finally end up with a league that won't have teams "selling" their players to the richer teams.
This is also surprising because I felt that if there's one team that would be interested in buying Air 21, it would be the MVP stable. Note that they have other companies like Maynilad (which may take over Barako), Manila North Tollway (which is joining the D-League), among others that they may still want to consider for PBA marketing. Add to the fact that Air 21's owner, Bert Lina, is partnered with MVP at Burger King.
So this probably explains why SMC didn't join the D-League. They probably are marshaling their resources to own their 4th PBA team. Will this be good for the league? Hard to say and only time will tell. The upside of course, as mentioned, is the remaining teams are expected to become independent from these two conglomerates. The downside is that we may see two groups running the show, both in the court and in the boardroom.
That would also mean the PBA Board would only have 6 voting members remaining. These would be SMB, Ginebra, Rain Or Shine, TNT, Alaska and Powerade.

Another MVP team is not the solution as he is already running thin. Aside from supporting whole basketball via the SBP, he has SMART GILAS Mens National Team, Meralco and Talk N Text in the PBA, 3 teams in the PBA D-league, Ateneo in the U...AAP, San Beda at the NCAA, Pampanga Buddies in the Liga Pilipinas and Sponsoring the whole Cebu Basketball Association that's only in basketball. MVP is also financing Amateur Boxing via ABAP, supporting financially football by helping the Azkals, then there is the substantial money contribution he has for Taekwondo, Karate, Arnis, Tennis, Cycling and Running/Marathon. Its already too much for a single man or group to shoulder, if he gone too far expect other stockholders of the companies he is controlling to rise-up and protest about the companies being Sports Philanthropists instead of earning more money for them.
For me the best solution is to entice the former PBA members like the Ayalas, Gokongweis, Concepcions, etc to come back or even encourage Henry Sy to join. They should also open the PBA to direct competition like Globe, Sun, Dutch Boy, Gatorade, and the like. I would really like to have Jollibee in the mix too! I'll cheer for Jollibee Chicken Joys like how I cheer for SMART GILAS and maybe to the same extent as I used to do for the Crispa Redmanizers. We need a Top Filipino Brand that the fans would really give support.

well your wish of Air21 disbanding could be just around the corner, first it was the news about the lopsided trade of their Top 3 draft pick players, then the news of their PBA Governor resigning now San Miguel is to buy their franchise.
What I am awaiting is not what MVP or his people feel but what would be the comments coming from the Alaska camp .... Tim Cone and Fred Uytengsu would surely not like this development.

GMA News is reporting that the Air 21 Express is on the verge of trading Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, and Rey Guevarra (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/213900/vets-for-young-turks-beermen-express-to-swap-players), the top three picks in the 2011 PBA draft (http://firequinito.com/archives/403-Air-21-leads-the-clusterfuck-that-was-the-2010-PBA-rookie-draft.html), to San Miguel in exchange for the Beermen’s 2011 first round draft pick, Joseph Yeo, and the corpses of Danny Seigle and Mick Pennisi in yet another lopsided deal. Baclao led the PBA in shotblocks in the recently-concluded Philippine Cup, while Al-Hussaini led the Express in scoring and rebounding in the tournament.
That Air 21 would agree to yet another bullshit trade comes as no surprise, given the record of the Bert Lina franchise; just over the past three years, the team has given away marquee players such as Ranidel de Ocampo, Arwind Santos (http://firequinito.com/archives/110-Burger-King-trades-Arwind-Santos-to-San-Miguel-for-a-plate-of-roasted-highland-legumes.html), Cyrus Baguio (http://firequinito.com/archives/9-Burger-King-now-selling-players-again.html), Japeth Aguilar (http://firequinito.com/archives/195-The-Japeth-saga-comes-to-a-close,-and-the-PBAs-new-season-opens.html), and Alex Cabagnot, among many others. But as a lifelong PBA fan who defends the league fervently on this blog – something I do with little compensation, by the way – trades like this still make me want to hurl my laptop into the wall.
The deal, apparently, still doesn’t have the approval of the PBA Commissioner’s Office. Chito Salud has revised trades earlier this season, his first as a commissioner, to make them seem more even. But adding draft picks to the transaction would not solve anything, because everyone knows that Air 21, that godforsaken franchise, will only use those picks to draft – and later, sell – talent.
I don’t know if the commissioner has the balls to veto a trade that would benefit the almighty San Miguel Corporation, but I do know that these kinds of shady transactions have done irreparable damage to the league in the eyes of the fans, and it will continue to do so if the practice remains unabated.

Nardy,
No argument there regarding MVP's team. I just felt that if there would be one team buying the Air 21 franchise assuming it's up for sale, it would be MVP's group. Apart from the business connections of both team owners, we have to understand that Air 21 owns a lot of first round picks in the succeeding seasons. Imagine how integral this would be to MVP's plans of collaring the SG players once they move to the pros. MVP would move heaven and earth to buy the franchise and the draft picks that go with it. Hence, buying Air 21 instead of Barako Energy Coffee Masters may actually be the better, albeit, more costly deal.

Yes actually my understanding also is that Ricky Vargas' Maynilad is set to take over Air21 or Barako.
Why do I really feel there is an unseen hand behind these moves (dont think its Robert Non) ..... Remember our certain exchange about that person who as we know is not really connected with the SMC group yet. It seems every move that the MVP group is supposed to do, the group of RSA is now a move ahead.

There's probability in this, although I don't really think it's a well-guarded secret. MVP's plans of securing a third franchise has been in the news already for over half a year so it's really a no-brainer on what their plans have. But buying Air 21 comes as a surprise since we all know that MVP's sights are set on the George Chua franchise. And because Air 21 has been quite chummy with the MVP Group lately, it would have been more logical to see them securing this franchise instead of SMC.
Similarly, he's still not connected with the SMC franchise at this time. He's also definitely not involved in the recent trade news going around at this time as, we all know that it's Robert Non's hand that's been guiding this transaction. But who knows? MVP's plans of expansion may have been spilled over to the RSA Group, thereby seeing the need to one-up their corporate rivals - at least, in this side of the competitions.

If Talk 'N Text was able to take advantage of the lopsided deal that saw them acquiring Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes before Sta. Lucia folded up, why not SMC? :D That trade paid off for them as Talk 'N Text bagged the recent 2010-2011 Philippine Cup trophy.
Talk 'N Text also was able to acquire Japeth Aguilar from Air21 (formerly Burger King). Although we have not seen Japeth's impact in the PBA yet, I think it is also a lopsided deal in favor of Talk 'N Text (again).
No wonder ex-commish Barrios is being speculated to takeover Eala's spot at the SBP. hehe.
The new commissioner (Salud) is doing a fine job in so far as avoiding these kinds of lopsided trade deals. As I have posted, it should be Number 1 for Number 1. San Miguel should be willing to throw their marquee player in Jay Washington to the table.

Phoenix? who owns that company..?
No argument there regarding MVP's team. I just felt that if there would be one team buying the Air 21 franchise assuming it's up for sale, it would be MVP's group. Apart from the business connections of both team owners, we have to understand that Air 21 owns a lot of first round picks in the succeeding seasons. Imagine how integral this would be to MVP's plans of collaring the SG players once they move to the pros. MVP would move heaven and earth to buy the franchise and the draft picks that go with it.
If I were MVP, I'll elevate Gilas as an expansion team rather than buying Barako. With these, he can elevate 5 players. Eventhough more expensive, he can be sure that his Gilas boys will still be under his company thus preventing his rivals to get them via draft.

Why would SMC have to trade for the top 3 picks now if they're going to buy the franchise later on? Is it because of the trade restrictions when they become sister teams? There's always a way around that...
Is it because they're not actually buying the franchise, but they just paid Air21 enough money to get their assets. Just like the Tanduay fire sale (Hontiveros to SMB, Menk, Hatfield to BGK)

not a bad idea, the core of the team (Tiu, Casio, Baracael, Aguilar, Lassiter, Lutz, ) is a formidable lineup, but I doubt the other teams would allow MVP to elevate the team in its entirety....
Should this happen, the league is now a MVP-Conjuangco consortium, with only Alaska having a clear shot in challenging for a championship

Air 21--the whole team--for sale to SMC? (http://firequinito.com/archives/518-Air-21-the-whole-team-for-sale-to-SMC.html)
Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla (http://firequinito.com/authors/1-Jaemark-Tordecilla) on February 28, 2011 at 19:04 (http://firequinito.com/archives/518-Air-21-the-whole-team-for-sale-to-SMC.html) | Comments (3) (http://firequinito.com/archives/518-Air-21-the-whole-team-for-sale-to-SMC.html#comments)
Rey Joble of GMA News today confirms that PBA commissioner Chito Salud has shot down (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/214129/top-rookies-for-pba-veteran-players-salud-turns-down-trade-offer) the proposed trade for Air 21’s marquee rookies Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, and Rey Guevarra (http://firequinito.com/archives/516-Air-21-to-send-Baclao,-Al-Hussaini,-Guevarra-to-San-Miguel,-continues-to-ruin-the-PBA.html) in exchange for San Miguel’s Joseph Yeo, Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, a first round pick from the Beermen, a case of San Mig Light, and 3 years’ supply of Skelan for the senior citizens in the deal. Salud called the deal lopsided, and virtually confirmed reports that there has been a trade despite vehement denials of Air 21 officials.
But that may not be the end of it, because Waylon Galvez of the Manila Bulletin is reporting this morning that Air 21 is entertaining talks of selling its franchise to the San Miguel Corporation (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306651/san-mig-buying-air21-franchise). Of course, it’s no guarantee a sale will happen, especially since the sourcing of the Bulletin story was very, very flimsy – it was a single anonymous source speculating about the ongoing discussion, with no confirmation from other sources.
Still, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Air 21 is willing to sell out; in fact, they had a deal in place for Mikee Romero to acquire the team (as part of a bigger deal for the Harbour Centre owner to buy into Burger King) but the transaction fell through.
I have mixed feelings if such a deal ends up happening. It means that the PBA will finally be rid of the terrible Bert Lina franchise, which has cause untold damage to the league over the years by selling its star players and acting as conduits to sham trades between the league’s sister teams. The biggest threat to the league today is a lack of credibility, which in turn causes the disenchantment of lifelong fans, and you could draw a direct line to that to the Bert Lina, Lito Alvarez, and that franchise. For the PBA, getting rid of Air 21 is like curing it of herpes.
But I’m not too keen about the idea of yet another San Miguel Corporation team joining the PBA fold. As it is, people already think of it as an SMC League (http://firequinito.com/archives/277-The-SMC-League.html). SMC having four teams in the league would consolidate even more power into its bloc, even more so than when the corporation had the Coca-Cola Tigers as the fourth team in its roster.
Back then, even though SMC owned four teams, they were only allowed two votes in the PBA board of governors. This came about late in 2001, when SMC acquired the Purefoods Corporation from the Ayalas, which created a crisis in the league as to whether the conglomerate would be allowed to keep their franchise. The board reached a compromise, wherein SMC would be allowed to keep Purefoods (and later, Coca-Cola), but the team would have no voting rights in PBA board meetings.
It was a fair enough deal that kept San Miguel from having too much power over the policy direction of the league. No matter how many teams SMC or any other conglomerate in the PBA owned, they would only be limited to two votes in the board.
Of course, that isn’t the case anymore since late last year, when the board railroaded a resolution to restore voting rights for policy-related matters back to Purefoods, giving the SMC bloc three votes in the board. If the conglomerate acquires the Air 21 franchise, they would gain a fourth vote. It’s an event that would put the balance of the league in serious jeopardy.
Funnily enough, the PBA board chairman who facilitated the restoration of voting rights to Purefoods? Air 21’s former team manager, Lito Alvarez (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/192374/salud-tapped-as-pba-deputy-commissioner).

Top rookies for PBA veteran players: Salud turns down trade offer
02/28/2011 | 04:29 PM
The blockbuster trade offer for Air21’s top three picks — Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra— in exchange for San Miguel Beer veteran players Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi and Joseph Yeo has been turned down by Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Atty. Chito Salud.
After a few days of speculations, Salud made the swift and decisive move to turn down the offer of the Beermen to acquire the services of the top three newcomers in exchange for the veterans on Monday.
“The trade involving Air21 rookie picks Baclao, Al-Hussiani and Guevarra for San Miguel’s Seigle, Pennisi and Yeo has been turned down because I believe the trade is lopsided," Salud told GMA News.
But the Beermen informed Salud that they will come up with a better offer to get the services of the three rookies.
“Whatever they will offer, that will also be subject for study," added Salud. - Rey Joble, GMA News

Phoenix to buy Barako Bull?
Salud nixes San Miguel, Air21 trade
By WAYLON GALVEZ
February 28, 2011, 7:11pm
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Basketball Association franchise of Barako Bull is up for sale. And it has a buyer.
This surfaced Monday after Barako Bull reportedly informed the PBA commissioner's office in a letter sent to Commissioner Chito Salud that it plans to sell its franchise and that a possible buyer is Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc., a Davao-based oil distribution company which also sponsors the PBA's out-of-town games.
The PBA board reportedly will meet next month to specifically discuss this matter.
The possible sale of the Barako Bull franchise comes on the heels of a reported meeting between officials of San Miguel Corporation and Air21 last week during which the possible sale of the Air21 franchise to the food and beverage giant was the side topic from discussions.
Barako Bull (http://mb.com.ph/articles/299826/barako-players-stunned-angered-team-decision) is currently on leave from the PBA although its management announced that it plans to return to the fold in the next conference.
Many believed that will not happen as the franchise is in terrible financial condition. Such is Barako's sad state that its players were practically given away for free in a dispersal draft but got few takers.
Only Pong Escobal and Lordy Tugade were selected, while Marlou Aquino was later signed by his former team, newcomer Meralco Bolts, giving him a new lease on his PBA life.
Owned by businesssman George Chua, Barako Bull, also known as Red Bull, won three titles – two Commissioner’s Cup and one Fiesta Cup, all of which were won under coach Joseller ‘Yeng’ Guiao, who is now the mentor of Rain or Shine.
The Bulletin tried to contact team representative to the PBA board Raffy Casyao for confirmation but the calls were not returned.
This is not the first time the Barako Bull has been reported that it was up for sale. Last season, there were reports that negotiations between Meralco, owned by Manny V. Pangilinan, and the team bogged down, prompting Meralco to buy the Sta. Lucia Realty franchise.
Meantime, the trade between Air21 and San Miguel Beer (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306721/smbair21-trade-update-no-deal) involving six players and two future picks was disapproved by PBA Commissioner Angelico “Chito” Salud.
The proposed trade was for Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra – the top three picks in the 2010 PBA Rookie Draft – joining SMB while going to the Express are veterans Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi and Joseph Yeo, as well as two future picks.

I know the Commissioner could veto a trade deal but does he have a say if a PBA Team wants to sell their PBA franchise and stop it? What if the company really could no longer have the funds to maintain a PBA team. Could the PBA or the Commissioner has a right to say to whom a PBA Team to sell its franchise?

Its because the Coca-cola Headquarters in Atlanta are not in favor of maintaining a PBA Team and the team is actually surviving more on the personal funds of JB Baylon, from what I heard their full support was pulled-out after the disastrous performance of the Powerade Team Pilipinas of Yeng Guiao. Its only the persistence of Baylon on not giving-up on the team which is keeping it going but looks like it would soon follow the path of Shell, FedEx and Red Bull, all Foreign MultiNational Corporations who saw that maintaining a Philippine Professional Basketball Team is not a sound business decision but more of a burden and at times a sales nightmare as team performance affects the product's market share.
Blame it on the greediness of the players and their player agents, it is known in the basketball community that the top-tier players have 2 contracts, one that's officially filed with the PBA and what's seen by the BIR while a secondary which is under the table. This practice has long been happening even before it was exposed by JV Gayoso and Rene Hawkins after Bong Tan's Tanduay disbanded. A number of the players are really being paid more than a million pesos per month and actually earns more than some of the corporate executives that are supposed to the bosses of the players. The Office of the PBA Commissioner is powerless on this as these transactions are kept secret from them and then the members of the Board of Governors just keep silent and seems blind about the matter as they are a party to a number of these illegal contracts which if they do not give in to the PBA Superstars, they would just transfer to another team which is more than willing to get them.
that's nothing .... to stir interest in the PBA, ABS-CBN wants to have a number of their stars like Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, John Lloyd Cruz, etc be distributed to different PBA teams and be allowed to play certain amount of minutes per game.
Is this legit? In terms of viewrship this might spike the interest of the viewers, but would hurt basketball in general...Why not just have a celebrity game in the All Star Weekend, they did it years ago btw..

Phoenix to rise as new PBA ballclub

Chito Salud
MANILA, Philippines - Phoenix Fuel, a flourishing petroleum company based in the south, is soon to become the newest member ballclub of the Philippine Basketball Association.
The Dennis Uy-owned firm, sponsor of the league in its out-of-town series in the last three years, is purchasing the Barako Bull franchise pending the approval of the PBA board of governors.
Since Barako has dealt away its marquee players, sources said Phoenix is purchasing the franchise way lower than the normal market value of P60 million.
The Barako Bull management has informed the Commissioner’s Office of the franchise sale prospect, and commissioner Chito Salud has relayed the message to the nine other PBA teams.
The board is likely to decide on the matter in their meeting this March. Under the league by-laws, franchise sale is subject to the approval of the board.
If approved, Phoenix pays the league a separate acceptance fee of P6 million.
Phoenix and Barako see no hindrance on their purchase deal even as San Miguel Corp. owns a petroleum company in Petron.
SMC is a major block in the board with three votes, being the owner of San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra and B-MEG Derby Ace.
If ever, Phoenix will be the second petroleum company to play in the PBA after Shell Pilipinas from 1985 to 2005.
The Energy Food and Drink Co. of George Chua, meanwhile, bids the PBA goodbye after 11 years of participation in the country’s premier pro league.
After a prestigious run in the PBL, Barako (then known as Red Bull) moved up to the PBA and had its glory days with three championships and several runner-up finishes in a five-year period starting in 2001.
Chua was recipient of the Executive of the Year award in 2002 while Yeng Guiao was winner of the Coach of the Year honors in 2001.
Barako developed players like Junthy Valenzuela, Lordy Tugade, Mick Pennisi, Rico Villanueva, Cyrus Baguio, Celino Cruz and Jimwel Torion but was forced to trade them away after the company was hit by the economic crunch.
Despite losing campaigns in 2008-09 and 2009-10, Barako has had a high win-loss mark of 253-244 (.509) through last season.
Only Alaska Milk and San Miguel had better winning percentage among active PBA teams.
Before entering in a deal with Phoenix, Barako took a leave of absence to pave the way for Smart Gilas’ participation in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner’s Office formally nixed yesterday the trade deal between Air21 and SMB involving Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra for Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, Joseph Yeo plus a future draft pick.

Is Air 21 selling out?
http://www.philstar.com/NewPhilstar/www/image/columnistPhotos/Joaquin-Henson.jpg

By agreeing to trade the top three rookies picked in the PBA draft last year, Air 21 appears to be close to ending its history in Asia’s first play-for-pay basketball league. There’s no clearer indication of cashing in its chips than dealing the three players who were supposed to form the backbone of Air 21’s future.
You can’t chastise the Air 21 owners for deciding to unload Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra who were chosen 1-2-3 in the last sweepstakes. That’s the owners’ prerogative. And if the owners want to sell out, that’s their prerogative, too.
What the PBA needs are franchise owners who are committed to stay competitive in the league over the long haul. The sooner the PBA weeds out owners who are not in it to win it, the better for the league and the fans. Owners with no long-term plans of building a championship contender shouldn’t be allowed to join the league in the first place.
We all know that the fortunes of a PBA team are largely dependent on the resources of the owning entity. It’s no secret that the owning entity must be in the pink of business health to own a PBA franchise. A company that is floundering and struggling for profits has no business owning a PBA team.
It’s possible that a company will fall into hard times in the course of owning a PBA franchise. Barako Bull is a prime example of a team whose future was compromised because its owning entity suffered business setbacks. That’s why Barako has filed a leave of absence. Its owning entity has lost the ability to sustain a PBA contender. If the owning entity is able to bounce back, for sure, it will reactivate Barako. But if the business outlook remains cloudy, Barako will remain in the closet. In fact, if the trend doesn’t reverse, the franchise itself may be up for sale. The scuttlebutt is a buyer is ready to take over the Barako franchise.
In Air 21’s case, there must be an overriding business consideration for the owners to think beyond the PBA. It must be a new direction for the company with the PBA out of the equation.
* * * *
Yesterday, the Express was hard at work in practice and team officials still had no knowledge of what loomed in the future. Coach Bong Ramos couldn’t confirm if import Jeremy Robinson would stay on or if Alpha Bangura would come in as his replacement. Nobody seemed to know what was going in – which was sad.
There was talk that Air 21 governor Johann Ramos had tendered his resignation from the Board but not from the company. If true, it must have had something to do with the trade. A team insider said he hopes Ramos would reconsider. But if the franchise is indeed up for sale, then Ramos’ exit would be irreversible.
On paper, it’s difficult to justify swapping Baclao, Al-Hussaini and Guevarra to San Miguel Beer for Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi and Joseph Yeo. It’s like giving away the future for the past. Seigle, 34, sat out the last three games of the previous conference after severely spraining his ankle. Pennisi has scored only eight points in his last 12 outings and no more than two in a game. He’s turning 36 next month.
To balance the trade, PBA commissioner Chito Salud added a pair of San Miguel first round picks so Air 21 has at least something to build on for the future. The trade, however, is still pending approval by Salud.
Air 21 came closest to winning a championship in the 2007-08 Fiesta Conference where the Express lost to Barangay Ginebra in the title series that went the seven-game distance. It was eliminated in the first game of the wildcards in the last three conferences.
Curiously, Air 21 appeared to be on the verge of retooling when it took the top three rookies in last year’s draft and tapped Ramos to take over from coach Yeng Guiao who has moved to Rain Or Shine. Leo Austria and Junel Baculi were interviewed for the job before Ramos was hired. Then came an offseason shakeup that caught even team manager Allan Gregorio by surprise. While Gregorio was in Dubai attending to his duties as Smart Gilas assistant coach, four mainstays were traded. Ronjay Buenafe, Ronnie Matias, Erick Rodriguez and J. R. Quinahan left as Jay-R Reyes, Reed Juntilla and Leo Avenido moved in.
Players who wore the Air 21 colors in the past included Arwind Santos, Ranidel de Ocampo, Mike Cortez, J. C. Intal, Don Allado, Gary David and Nino Canaleta. So it’s not as if Air 21 was loaded with deadbeats since entering the PBA in 2002.
* * * *
Like Barako, Air 21 has lately become the target of PBA contenders for trades. It has gained the dubious reputation as a springboard for other teams, a franchise that’s wide open for business.
Once more, it must be reiterated that if Air 21 has reevaluated its core business future and found no relevance in supporting a PBA team, then the only option left is to leave gracefully.
Salud’s mandate is to make the PBA stronger and that only means fortifying its stable of teams. The Barako franchise is reportedly close to being bought by a thriving oil company based in the South. With Air 21’s recent move to leverage its future, a sell-out appears imminent – something that Salud might want to encourage if only to guarantee that those left in the fold are bound by the uncompromising principle of staying competitive for the long haul.
Let’s respect the new direction envisioned by Air 21’s owners. At the same time, let’s respect what the PBA stands for – a commitment to excellence and competitive balance.

True.
@jamalsampson I agree. I think Philippine-based companies with rich owners that are passionate in the game (MVP for example) are the only teams that can compete and survive in the league. Without the hunger and desire to win and be competitive, teams will only use PBA as a tool in gaining benefits for their companies, which is likely done by Air21 right now. If the company isn't competitive budget-wise, they will be forced to participate the league with incompetent line-ups (see Barako Bull).
For Powerade's part, the lack of support from their mother company is the telling factor on why they can't compete with the best teams anymore. This same scenario caused the disbandment of Shell last 2005.

So True .....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/damby/don_jaime.jpg
I do miss the Ayalas, Floros, Elizaldes, Palancas, Concepcions, Euyangs, Ysmaels, Cosetengs, Silverios ..... they show a real passion for the game and its really different during their time as even though they are very high in society ..... they welcomed the players in their world and treat them like family.
Its also different the way Ramon Ang treats the SMC teams compared to the way Danding Cojuangco does it during his time .... the Boss has that personal touch like the old Team Owners do it.
On the present batch its Fred Uytengsu who comes near.
At present, it more about business, the players are more like employees. I was different before, I remember Patrimonio dousing Don Jaime Zobel with Champagne during a victory celebration in the dugout. Today, you cannot expect any player doing that to MVP, RSA or even Fred Uytengsu.

Phoenix Petroleum in talks to buy Barako and what it means to the PBA’s future (http://firequinito.com/archives/519-Phoenix-Petroleum-in-talks-to-buy-Barako-and-what-it-means-to-the-PBAs-future.html)

Multiple outlets this morning are reporting that Phoenix Petroleum is in talks to acquire the Barako Bull franchise. If and when the transaction pushes through, it will finally put an end to one of the most pathetic episodes in PBA history, which saw the once-proud Red Bull franchise crippled by financial problems and forced to sell its key players to barely make payroll from month to month (http://firequinito.com/archives/491-Barako-Bull-takes-a-leave-from-the-PBA.html). Finally, the nightmare is over.
But while talk of Phoenix’s entry over the next few months will revolve around basketball-related matters – Will they be able to become competitive? How will they rehabilitate a team whose lineup has been ransacked? – let’s take a look at the most important part of this transaction: Will they be able to afford supporting a PBA team?
Here’s a look at the financials, and how Phoenix compares to other teams in the PBA:

7. Based on Ginebra San Miguel, Inc. earnings. Source: 2009 GSMI earnings report (http://www.ginebrasanmiguel.com/gsmi/uploads/file/2009%20annual%20financial%20highlights.pdf).
8. Source: 2010 Phoenix Petroleum earnings report (http://www.phoenixphilippines.com/investors_financial.php).
A few other notes:
For Talk N Text, I listed the financial information for the PLDT wireless group instead of the whole company. For Coke, no data has been available about Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. (CCBPI) since the company was sold by San Miguel Corporation to The Coca-Cola Company in 2006, so I used figures from SMC’s 2005 annual report. Airfreight 2100, Inc., which owns Air 21, and Asian Coatings Inc., have no financial data readily available.
As we can see from the graphs above, Phoenix is still smaller compared to other teams in the PBA, but it’s not that far behind some squads. In fact, its 2010 annual revenue is already bigger than Alaska’s 2009 figure.
But perhaps even more importantly, Phoenix is still a growing business, as shown by a quick look at the company’s financial highlights:
http://firequinito.com/uploads/revenue-phx.jpg
http://firequinito.com/uploads/net-income-phx.jpg
Even more expansion is in the offing for the company, which disclosed that it had earmarked P1.5 billion for expansion this year (http://www.stocksph.com/2010/12/phoenix-petroleum-philippines-inc.html). Last September, Phoenix raised some P500 million from the issuance of preferred stocks for investors. By all indications, it’s a company that wants to go big time.
If I were PBA commissioner Chito Salud, I’d roll out the red carpet for Phoenix. If it does end up joining the PBA, then it will be an affirmation for the league both as a marketing vehicle and as a prestige membership club for companies. It sends the message that punching a PBA ticket is a sure signal that a company is now playing in the big leagues. It’s also a sign that there are still companies apart from those controlled by Manny Pangilinan and Ramon Ang (http://firequinito.com/archives/495-San-Miguel-Talk-N-Text-series-the-latest-saga-in-Ramon-Ang-Manny-Pangilinan-rivalry.html) willing to invest in the league, which bodes well for the future of Philippine basketball. For the PBA, a diverse, competitive league is a healthy league.
In the short term, the entry of a new team would form a four-vote bloc in the PBA board (Alaska, Powerade, Rain or Shine, Phoenix) which isn’t beholden to SMC or MVP – and it might pave the way for meaningful change in the way things are run for the PBA. It’ll be the first step to making a fairer PBA, where the salary cap is followed, and trades are made only for basketball reasons. It that ends up becoming Chito Salud’s legacy – a big IF – then he’ll end up being remembered as the man who fixed the PBA.

Phoenix needs PBA board's approval for purchase of Barako
03/01/2011 | 07:30 PM
A board approval is necessary for the entry of Phoenix Petroleum into the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The petroleum company has expressed interest in acquiring the struggling Barako Bull franchise.
A highly-placed source from the league confirmed to GMA News that the rising petroleum company is close to purchasing the Barako franchise for an undisclosed amount, but that the selling price is expected to be lower than P60 million, which was what was paid by the then Photokina franchise in 2000 when it entered the league as an expansion team.
"A document has already been sent informing us about the possible takeover of Phoenix pending the board’s approval," said the source, who requested anonymity.
If Phoenix will be accepted, it will become the second petroleum company to join the PBA. Pilipinas Shell, which purchased the franchise of the legendary Crispa Redmanizers in 1985, was the first, and competed in the pro league for 20 years.
Phoenix Petroluem is a staunch backer of the PBA, having supported the league’s road games for several years now.
For Barako Bull, it was a fruitful 11-year ride campaigning in the pro league. While carrying the brand of Red Bull, the team had its early success, winning a championship in only its second year, in the 2001 Commissioner’s Cup under the tutelage of fiery mentor Yeng Guiao.
Guiao won two more titles for Red Bull — the 2002 Commissioner’s Cup and the 2005-2006 Fiesta Conference.
"I had a great time with the Red Bull team. I have fond memories of Boss George (Chua) and his family. They are good people with a competitive attitude. I love all my players who gave their best when we were together. We were a close group that regarded each other with sincerity and respect," said Guiao in a text message.
But the company has been financially challenged for several years now, forcing the squad to unload their marquee players such as Willie Miller, Kerby Raymundo, Junthy Valenzuela, Lordy Tugade, Cyrus Baguio, Mick Pennisi and Enrico Villanueva among others.
Two years ago, Barako even entered into a co-branding agreement with Harbour Centre to help the Energy Boosters in financing the team. The team went through problematic years since 2009, with members of the squad experiencing delays in their salaries.
All these are expected to be put to an end with the takeover of a new owner.
Barako Bull will become the second team in the PBA to fold up in a span of two seasons. Sta. Lucia, which competed in the league for 17 years, also bade goodbye last year. The franchise was taken over by Meralco, one of the teams controlled by businessman/sportsman Manny V. Pangilinan. - Rey Joble, KY, JVP, GMA News

SMB wants youth served
By Nelson Beltran (http://www.philstar.com/ArticleListByAuthorName.aspx?AuthorName=By+Nelson+ Beltran) (The Philippine Star) Updated March 02, 2011 12:00 AM

Danny Seigle, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Noy Baclao, Joseph Yeo and Mick Pennisi
MANILA, Philippines - San Miguel Beer continues to push for a trade deal with Air21, hoping to finally get the approval of the PBA Commissioner’s Office with a revised trade package submitted to the league office yesterday.
The Beermen want Air21 prized rookies Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra, who they hope will provide youth and spunk in their drive for the championship.
League commissioner Chito Salud, however, was on leave yesterday, thus, the revised trade between San Miguel and Air21 remains up for approval.
San Miguel’s original trade offer was a package including Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, Joseph Yeo and one draft pick.
SMB may have added another draft pick in the revised deal.
Salud nixed the original transaction, finding it lopsided in favor of San Miguel.
With the league commissioner looking at the trade revision only today at the earliest, Al-Hussaini, Baclao and Guevarra still play with Air21 as it tangles with B-MEG Derby Ace tonight at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Powerade and Talk n Text, teams featuring prolific imports, clash in the 7:30 p.m. main game.
The Express gun for a share of early Commissioner’s Cup elims lead with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and the Alaska Milk Aces, going for a follow-up on their 92-87 win over the Beermen Friday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
“Hopefully, we can follow up our big win. It’s a good start for us,” said Air21 coach Bong Ramos.
Derby Ace, however, is likely to put up a tough fight, having lost its first two games.
The other game could also be a battle with Powerade riding the momentum of a stirring win the last time and Talk n Text determined to bounce back from a losing debut versus Smart Gilas.
“It will be a running game. We have to do a better job in defending Talk n Text’s transition offense. We have learned our lessons well,” said Powerade coach Bo Perasol.
“It’s a tough game versus a team with a great import. We’ll see if we’ve improved from last game,” said Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.
The Tigers feature an energetic import in Russel Carter who averaged 35 points in his first two games in the local pro league.
Talk n Text’s Paul Harris didn’t do bad in his debut but the Tropang Texters just weren’t able to neutralize Smart Gilas’ 6-foot-10 naturalization candidate Marcus Douthit.
Douthit came through with 26 rebounds, 16 points, five blocks, five assists and two steals in leading Smart Gilas to a 103-98 win over Talk n Text.

I would have to disagree on the bolded part, I believe rabeh and noy has proven themselves already (atleast for one conference). Both had significant effects for their mother ballclubs as they have averaged double-doubles and an anchor of their defense respectively.
As for comparing Japeth and Rabeh, I would have to go with Rabeh as of now, clearly between the 2, Rabeh is more polished.

In business to get ahead you have take risks, so for the future San Miguel would rather gamble on upcoming newbies have them replace the already depreciated veteran players. As for Artadi, he is not consistent coz in some games he is a gem of a player but in some games he is just so erratic.
though getting the youngsters does not actually assure future success but exchanging it for the oldies would assure the team has continuity because Danny S, Dondon and Dorian are not fresh chickens anymore and retirement is just around the corner.

I hope pacman can play for phoenix, it would surely boost PBA ratings!
Whaaaatttt? You want pacman to play in the PBA? Are you kidding bro? If all the PBA followers has mentality like you, maybe it ( PBA rating ) will boost. But for an ideal PBA fans, allowing pacman to play in the PBA will only ruin the PBA more!

Laman ng Envelope: Seigle, Peña, Dondon and Artadi for Rabeh, Baclao and Guevarra. Fair enough?
6 minutes ago (http://twitter.com/#%21/snowbadua/status/42814166637084672)
Still not fair enough. The injury-prone Danny Seigle is just three conferences away from retirement. Dorian Pena is like good enough to play back-up center with his aging knees. While the 6-year veteran Paul Artadi is just too error prone and is not a consistent point guard.

Beermen to pursue Express' top 3 rookie picks
03/02/2011 | 01:16 PM
Denied in their first bid to acquire Air21's top three rookie picks, San Miguel Beer did not waste any time as it revised its trade offer to the Express.
With the top three picks - Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra - in sight, the Beermen retained Danny Seigle in the trade package and included Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Peña and Paul Artadi in the deal.
But Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Chito Salud has yet to approve SMB's trade offer.
Salud has turned down the Beermen's initial offer of shipping Seigle, Mick Pennisi and Joseph Yeo for the Express' top three picks in last year's PBA Rookie Draft.
Salud said on Tuesday that whatever SMB will offer will be subject for study by his office.
Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio, in a text message to GMA News Online, said both squads will benefit if ever Salud approves the two-team, seven-player trade.
"Some things are inevitable and beyond our control but this trade seems exciting and win-win for both teams," Gregorio said. - Rey Joble/JVP/OMG, GMA News

either arwind, j-wash or cabaggie should be added for the trade to be fair....why would you trade your brand-new car for an old car? unless you're a vintage collector...

I have a feeling that SMC has bought Air21 franchise already, that's why they are now willing to give up DS, Pena and Dondon. Knowing the company, they have loyalty to players. So, SMC pa rin retire nila.

That's right. SMC has the best retirement package in the PBA. The only better retirement plan is in the PMA! ha ha!

The SMC League (http://firequinito.com/archives/277-The-SMC-League.html)
Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla (http://firequinito.com/authors/1-Jaemark-Tordecilla) on February 8, 2010 at 18:49 (http://firequinito.com/archives/277-The-SMC-League.html)
After a crazy quarterfinal round, the stage is set for the PBA Philippine Cup final four. The cast features 3 teams that belong to the San Miguel Corporation, which again reinforces perceptions by the league’s critics that the PBA is an SMC league. Some even say that the PBA is set up so that SMC teams would always end up on the winning end of most tournaments.
The grand conspiracy argument doesn’t hold much water. If it were true, there’s no way Sta. Lucia would have won the 2008 Philippine Cup over Purefoods in a close seven-game series wherein James Yap was suspended for one game for the same flagrant 2 penalty called on Ranidel de Ocampo (http://firequinito.com/archives/273-The-Talk-N-Text-walkout.html) last Friday. Imagine David Stern suspending Kobe Bryant on an iffy call in an NBA finals series against a team like the Milwaukee Bucks.
That doesn’t mean to say that SMC teams do not have an advantage. The PBA landscape today gives the rich teams a leg up when it comes to acquiring talent, and each of the SMC teams have taken advantage to build up its arsenal.
By my count, Ginebra, Purefoods, and San Miguel have acquired a total of 19 players through lopsided trades over the past 5 PBA seasons. The trend started prior to the 2006-07 season, when Ginebra and San Miguel ransacked the roster of erstwhile sister team Coca-Cola just before the corporation let go of the franchise. Over the next several years, each SMC team found more willing partners in Red Bull and Air 21 who would let go of their star players for a song.

The data does not reflect the indirect benefits of one SMC team acquiring new star players to its sister teams. For example, San Miguel benefitted when Ginebra acquired Hatfield, Mamaril, and Reavis from Coke, because it opened the door for the Beermen to trade for Ginebra’s Rommel Adducul, who had become expendable. When San Miguel acquired Villanueva, Adducul was shipped to Purefoods. Pingris found his way back to Purefoods from San Miguel this season after the arrival of Santos to the Beermen’s camp.
I also did not include in the table the first round draft picks acquired by the Beermen from Coke during the ransacking. San Miguel used the second overall pick in 2007 to draft Samigue Eman, and the third pick in the 2008 draft to trade for Jay Washington. These were non-trivial assets.
Of course, it’s not just the SMC teams doing this. Talk N Text has been just as brazen about stockpiling talent over the past several years. Another rich franchise, Coca-Cola, seems to be going in that direction.
Meanwhile, the Photokina (Red Bull/Barako Bull) and Lina (Air 21/Burger King) franchises have had no scruples about letting their players go to the highest bidders. Sta. Lucia, a franchise beset by financial difficulty, might be going down the same path. In the PBA board, only Alaska and Rain or Shine might be inclined to pursue changes to the system, and even then they are vastly outnumbered.
There hasn’t been nearly enough outrage from the fans. I tried to incite outrage when Burger King sold off Santos (http://firequinito.com/archives/110-Burger-King-trades-Arwind-Santos-to-San-Miguel-for-a-plate-of-roasted-highland-legumes.html) to San Miguel, but it was met by general apathy. The Filipino basketball fan’s mindset is rarely about playing fair, and mostly about getting an advantage at any cost. It runs true from college basketball – seriously, check out the message board discussions on high school prospects by fans of elite schools – up to the pros. Hell, think about how Smart Gilas fans wanted Japeth Aguilar on the team (http://firequinito.com/archives/195-The-Japeth-saga-comes-to-a-close,-and-the-PBAs-new-season-opens.html), at any cost, relationships be damned.
We want our teams to cut every corner to get the best players. Should it come as any surprise when they do exactly that?

This smb and air 21 trade is so one sided and unfair. Air 21 is so stupid to trade there rookie standouts for old and injured plague players. Im a Danny Seigle fan but his days are long gone and only a few years left in his pba career. Same with Pena. Hontiveros is the only bright spot. But my goodness they trade the number 1 rookie in scoring and the best rookie defender. Rabeh and Baclao are college and national team standout for goodness sake air 21. Smb is such a cheat. Is Danding has so much influence in Pba? This is unfair, rookie phenom traded for "has beens" they are making a mockery of this league. Remember smb has a history of unfair trade and deals which always infavor of them which is always allowed by pba since the mon fernandez era. To much influence on officials and money power ala lakers.

With the SMB-Air21 trade approved, expect moves by the other teams especially MVP's teams, Talk N Text and Meralco.
MVP would not allow RSA to out move him. Let's see what happens in the comming days.
Problem is, are there any more trade pieces which other teams could still get in order to match-up with San Miguel Beer.

There's validation in KD's theory about the Air 21 franchise already being bought by SMC and is just a matter of formality. To date, I cannot fathom why the SMB veterans who have played practically their entire careers with the team or the conglomerate (except for Hontiveros for 2 seasons with Tanduay Gold) are being given up just like that - to an also-ran team in Air 21 at that. We're all familiar with the SMC philosophy of taking care of their players - and how those who have been loyal to them will be amply rewarded when their careers are about to end. Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros and Dorian Pena have been the nucleus of the SMB team for nearly a decade already and I just don't see any reason why SMB would give them up. Paul Artadi, on the other hand, has been with the conglomerate since his rookie year in 2004.
Hence, if SMB does buy Air 21's franchise come next season, then they would go back to becoming SMC members. I won't be surprised if SMB is paying their salaries - whether full or partial - just to make them feel secured. I would have expected guys like Joseph Yeo, Denok Miranda, Arwind Santos, Mick Pennisi, Jay Washington, among others, to be given up in lieu of the four. Not because they're less valued but because they have been with the franchise for 5 years or less. Beyond 5 years, SMB players are practically locked up with the team until their retirement.
The upside of acquiring the Air 21 franchise would not be their present roster, although it's actually competitive with Hontiveros, Seigle, Pena and Artadi around to join forces with Urbiztondo, Najorda, etc. What gives value to this franchise is their accumulation of first round picks - perhaps, an extra three or four up to 2014 (not sure of this though). Imagine the potential access of SMC in getting the SG players once these guys turn pro.
Assuming this theory is correct, then SMC would once more have four franchises in the PBA. And if Phoenix Petroleum gets the Board's nod to buy Barako's franchise, then that relegates MVP's roster to only two teams. I won't be surprised later on if MVP tries to match SMC's number by trying to acquire a new franchise and / or buy an existing PBA team (perhaps Powerade?) to keep in stead with their corporate rivals. The PBA would then be forced to secure another new team in their roster to make the PBA roster to a total of 12 teams; 8 of which belonging to the RSA and MVP Groups. The remaining 4 teams will be Rain Or Shine, Alaska, Phoenix and a new franchise.
I penciled Powerade as the most likely team to disband with their doldrum performance and how their mother company in Atlanta frowns on their participation in the PBA. If Powerade continues to flounder, justification for its PBA retention would be extremely difficult.
Do we expect the SM Group to come in later on? Or the Lamoiyan Group? Hard to tell but if ever MVP does buy a new franchise making the total to 11 teams, then the PBA would be forced to entertain another group to come in and ensure having 12 teams (an even number) to complete the league roster.

If SMC is serious in its desire to secure Air 21's franchise, then a conduit might not be necessary. Having Pena, Artadi, Hontiveros and Seigle at Air 21 would avoid complications later on of rebuilding this franchise that may be secured by the SMC group. They would already have the core nucleus of the successful SMC team of the early to mid 2000's and would just need a couple of tinkering to get this team more competitive. Imagine the draft picks that Air 21 has at this point, which may be part of the Air 21 sale, considering that they will have a solid shot at the SG players about to turn pro.
Here's the thing though - would Phoenix be able to get the votes? Note that MVP himself is interested in acquiring another PBA franchise. Barako and Air 21 (and perhaps Powerade) are the most likely franchises up for sale. Phoenix buying Barako will serve as a hindrance to MVP's plans in bringing in Maynilad to the PBA roster so most likely, that's a vote against Phoenix. Add the SMC Group made up of B-Meg, BGK, and SMB, plus Air 21 if ever, and Phoenix won't be able to secure the majority vote.

Then there are talks BMeg and Ginebra are now targeting the following players:
Gary David and Sean Anthony of Powerade plus Gabe Norwood, Larry Rodriguez, Ronjay Buenafe and Doug Kramer of Rain or Shine.
There is going to be a re-shuffle of players between Ginebra and BMeg to make the respective line-ups more balanced.
it could either be Billy Mamaril or Yancy de Ocampo who'll be swapped with Jay-R Reyes.
One of Jondan Salvador, Don Allado and Rafi Reavis is not safe as BMeg inteads to re-tool itself with Rico Maierhofer out for the season.

Jay .... I like to remind everybody that when Purefoods/BMeg was supposed to be sold to the Butch Campos' Del Monte Pacific Ltd. and Ricardo Po's Century Pacific Group of Companies and since the supposed takeover of the new group didn’t include the company’s basketball team in the pro league, it was decided PETRON which is now part of the San Miguel group would take over the PBA Franchise, it was actually even gotten the PBA's approval.
But as we know Purefoods’ franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association is here to stay – at least for now- after the supposed sale broke down due to price and control issues.
Everybody thought it was really over for Purefoods storied-PBA franchise because the top honchos even bade goodbye to the squad and then PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios even instructed his staff to pull out the old Purefoods/B-Meg Derby Ace sporting merchandise in retail outlets. Plus Purefoods Coach Ryan Gregorio and his Assistant Ronnie Magsanoc moved to Meralco thus transferring to MVP group's side and out of the San Miguel where they were associated for a long-time.
With this I think this is related to the rumors of San Miguel Group buying the PBA franchise of Air 21.
On a related matter, San Miguel would also most likely use their voting power in the PBA Board of Governors to try to block the sale of Barako Bull to Phoenix Petroleum which even though a small player but is still a direct competitor of Petron in the Oil Industry.

last two years or so... it has really been a pitiful sight for the league to have franchises like redbull, powerade and air21. The commissioner did not even lend out a helping hand to struggling franchises, if it was me i would have given them an extra import for the 2nd conference and 3rd conference of the season sort of just to balance the teams talents in the Pba. Judging from the line ups the 2nd conference it would have been a great equalizer for a short tourney of sorts for powerade to have two 6-4 imports or even just 1 unlimited height import, the model being smart gilas with a 6-10 marcus douthit dominating the paint both offense and defense.
With the entry of Rabeh and Baclao... Smb now just needs to get a swingman as an import, a gabe freeman return and that would fast track their title hopes for a title contention run 2nd conference.

The PBA is now in mess! There is no more sanity and fairness in the field. Big teams would just get away with what they want with the supposedly blessing of an impartial commissioner (whom we should congratulate for ably disguising his connection with this big corporation) and it's just not fun anymore to watch this one sided competition. It's time now to turn our attention to other competition and let the PBA find its way to its own extinction. I guess there's no one else to blame but themselves and their greedy intentions.

talent-wise, no team got short-changed... on paper, it seems as if Air21 got the better end of the deal but if you look at how the new players stack up alongside their new teams, it tells a different story. SMB became easier to build another franchise on and Air21 became harder to manage.

“we are putting premium on championship experience danny seigle, dorian peña, dondon hontiveros and paul artadi can give us,” said air21 team owner bert lina in a statement. “we think that having these gentlemen in our team is the right direction as we would want to blend experience with youth and this will hopefully provide us with immediate results.”

Air21 Express now a PBA Contender after trade?
By BRIAN YALUNG

MANILA, Philippines – The suspense is over and now Air21 and San Miguel Beer (officials, players and fans) can move on.
After finally getting the nod of PBA Commissioner Atty. Chito Salud, the Beermen have finally landed the coveted top young turks of the Express in Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.
The trio are being hailed as the new breed that will infuse new blood into the aging ballclub of San Miguel Beer.
Danny Ildefonso, who is likewise in the twilight years, remains the only remnant from the rebuilding years that SMB had made way back in 1999.
Over at the Air21 Express camp, the PBA trade does make them a sudden force to reckon with. With the addition of Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Pena and Paul Artadi, all the bases seem filled right now.
If you look at it, this is a team that can make it the finals when given the opportunity.
Complimenting their entry are holdovers like Wynne Arboleda, Jay-R Reyes, Leo Avenido, Josh Urbiztondo, Carlo Sharma, Wesley Gonzales and Reed Juntilla. For the record, that is no pushover lineup.
Sure, the new faces are indeed in the twilights of their career but for the time being and barring any injuries (career-threatening or not), Air21 has got what it takes to be a championship contender.
Fans may have not liked the trade between the two teams but the fact remains, Air21 has what it takes to win its first PBA title with the new veterans in tow.
These highlights are of course with the understanding that no further trades will be made for now.
The Express may have lost fresh legs and some height but have however inherited added artillery (with the entry of Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros), power/ruggedness (Dorian Pena) and energy/hussle (Paul Artadi).
If you think San Miguel got the better of that PBA trade guess again. The rookies are indeed promising but they will still be a work in progress.

Letting go of Dondon
Wednesday, 02 March 2011 19:32 Joel Orellana
SAN MIGUEL Beer and Air21 are apparently keen on completing a huge trade, and now a more convincing arrangement is being made after a rather outlandish proposal was turned down by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
The Beermen are willing to give up Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Pena and Paul Artadi to secure the services of young guns Rabeh al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra—Air21’s top three picks in the last rookie draft.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud has yet, to approve the revised proposal, though.
“It’s not yet approved by commissioner Salud. Maybe later or bukas depende kung ano ang assessment niya dito,” league operations chief Rickie Santos told the BusinessMirror on Wednesday.
Salud was in the hospital the whole afternoon on Wednesday to attend to his ailing father, former commissioner Rudy Salud.
But according to a source, the deal will most likely be approved by the PBA because it is now more balanced compared with the previous proposal.
Initially, the Beermen are trying to give away Mick Pennisi, Joseph Yeo and Seigle for the three Express rookies but Salud turned it down and asked San Miguel Beer to revise the proposal if it wants the top rookie picks badly.
“Some things are inevitable and beyond our control but this trade seems exciting and a win-win for both teams,” said Express team manager Allan Gregorio.
Team governor Johann Ramos reportedly has stepped down from his post as he was against the trade. the BusinessMirror could not reach Ramos to confirm the report.
It was Ramos who mentioned to media on draft day that there is no way they will trade al-Hussaini, Baclao and Guevarra because they will be the cornerstones of the franchise, which has yet to win its first PBA crown since joining the league in 2002.
If the deal pushes through, al-Hussani, Baclao and Guevarra will join Anthony Washington, Mark Cardona, Yancy and Ranidel de Ocampo, Marc Pingris, JC Intal and Arwind Santos as Air21’s noted picks in previous rookie drafts who were eventually traded to other teams.
The Express played Talk ’N Text on Wednesday night at the Astrodome in Pasay City, probably the last game of al-Hussaini, Baclao and Guevarra in Air21 uniforms.
They could possibly debut as Beermen on Friday against Meralco at the Araneta Coliseum.

Does Danding has so much influence in Pba? This is unfair, rookie phenom traded for "has beens" they are making a mockery of this league. Remember smb has a history of unfair trade and deals which always in favor of them which is always allowed by pba since the mon fernandez era. To much influence on officials and money power ala lakers.

injury plagued? in the case of danny S yes, but dorian, DH, and artadi have not missed long stretches of games in a while now... rookie phenom? double-double stats yes but the guy cant even push air21 to a decent finish in the all-filipino conference, getting booted out by a wide margin at teh start of the playoffs. all smb got in this trade was "potential", yes they got younger but skills wise? that's still up in the air, so its too early to say this trade was one-sided. as the trend in social sites say, this was a trade for potential vs. proven.

The way I see it, in fairness to both teams, they are benefited one way to the other. Though shootertwist may be right that "it's too early to say that it was one sided". Both teams may have got the players that could be their teams' missing piece. It could be that Air21 can feel right away the impact, since their new players are already tested and experienced. However, on how long these players will last and be effective, that is the question. While for San Miguel, their new players are still raw and young. Though they all had a colorful colleagiate and amateur playing careers. But those will not guarantee that they'll do the same in the PBA. All San Miguel can be assured of is for the three players be invested for a long term development and be the future of the team.
In short, the comparison will still be POTENTIAL YOUTH vs. TESTED EXPERIENCE. Who has the edge?

since you mentioned it well, while SMC is said to be buying the Air21 franchise and Barako Bull is negotiating the sale of its team to Phoenix Petroleum.
MVP's Maynilad is most likely to get the franchise of Powerade when it bows out from the league.
How long Alaska and Rain or Shine would be able to holds on is still up in the air.
What is keeping Rain or Shine in the league is the passion of its owners Raymond Yu and Terry Que for the game of basketball but their company is not getting its usual sales in the past and are barely meeting its corporate revenue goals, so it would be tough on them.

I won't be surprised later on if MVP tries to match SMC's number by trying to acquire a new franchise and / or buy an existing PBA team (perhaps Powerade?) to keep in stead with their corporate rivals
The smarter route is to elevate SMART as a new team and bring in its core. By that SMC wont be able to get these Gilas players that MVP nurtured.

Taking the Air out of 21 (http://bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2011/03/taking-air-out-of-21.html)
Taking the Air out of 21
My thoughts on a blockbuster trade
I was talking to some Air21 officials about yesterday's debacle against B-Meg Derby Ace and even before the start of the match, the team was lethargic. The trade talk had been going on for about a week and it was beginning to take its toll on the team. How did Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao, and Rey Guevarra take it? Not good. They were unhappy to go. Imagine that. Where have you heard about an Air21 player not wanting to go to a bigger and well-financed club? The thing is they were excited about bringing a title to Air21 and now they no longer have that chance (although their chances of winning have improved significantly with the transfer to a wealthier club).
I recall earlier in the year, Nonoy informed me of an aborted trade to another club. I asked him how he felt about it and he said that he wasn't sure about it. It sounded good but there was that feeling that the Air21 struck gold and all it needed were a few more pieces to compete for a championship. I told Noy to tell Rabs to stay put because for one, he might not get the same number of touches he is getting with his club. And even worse, he might not even start. Ditto for Noy.
Well, there it is... the trade trigger was pulled and it might be good and it might be bad. I was thinking that darn it, now almost the entire third gen SMB team that won them a bunch of titles in the 90s and early 2000s is now gone. And they had to wait for Olsen Racela to retire. Now it's just Danny Ildefonso left from that batch.
I once had a long talk with Siot Tanquincen and other players about the transition of that aging ballclub to a younger one with Arwind Santos, Jay Washington, and their guards then in Jonas Villanueva and Mike Cortez. And he said that the team of Seigle and company had a hard time accepting the lesser roles. And I remembered what happened to the team in the 90s when its aging stars either retired or were traded away. Allan Caidic, Ramon Fernandez, Samboy Lim, and Hec Calma retired and what did they get for that? Nothing. Sure Elmer Reyes left and they got Nelson Asaytono for Ato Agustin and the rebuilding was on.
For SMB, it's trade some parts that still have value while there's time. It's just too bad that it's those guys -- Dondon, Danny S, Dorian, and Paul. They probably didn't think that the fate that befell the Boston Celtics of the 1980s would happen to them. They have learned their lessons all too well. After all, it's still a business.
My last thought about this is on Wesley Gonzales. When he was with SMB and their regulars were injured, he took their place and played well. Then when the team was healthy his minutes and production went down. Just when he was getting that playing time with the original team that drafted him, who does he see in their next practice -- his old teammates in San Miguel. As for the minutes and the touches -- that remains to be seen.

If ever Wesley's minutes go down again and he decides to quit from basketball,
At least he has a fall-back position and go corporate. Having a college diploma
plus a Master's degree from Ateneo would come handy in his life after basketball.

The Final Score: Gains and losses from the SMB - Air 21 trade
http://www.gmanews.tv/webpics/articles/2011/Mico_Halili_TN.jpg
By MICO HALILI
Seems as easy as 1-2-3 right? One PBA team wants to acquire this season's top three picks (1. Nonoy Baclao, 2. Rabeh Al-Hussaini, 3. Rey Guevarra) so it must meet the requirements of another. Air 21 was ready to receive San Miguel's Danny Seigle and Mick Pennisi in return. But due to threats of public discontent, one revised proposal later, Air 21 welcomes Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Peña and Paul Artadi instead. It's done. Everybody happy. Let's move on. Right?
Make no mistake about it. San Miguel got what it wanted. Air 21 got what it wanted. That's a fair deal right there. Yet some view the whole transaction as one colossal mistake. Teka muna. Why should outsiders decide what's best for two teams? Must a trade among businessmen be popular in order for it to be legitimate? Which is more valuable, youth or experience? What was shattered by the trade -- the idealistic view of a balanced league or hearts that palpitated for players born and raised in San Miguel red?
The thing is; a PBA trade between two teams, a contract sealed by handshakes between power-brokers, isn't just between two teams. It's also a covenant shared by every stakeholder involved. Hence, we have an overflow of diverse yet all equally visceral reactions from players, skeptics and fans alike. Three rookies all under 25 years old for three veterans 33 years old and above (the fourth veteran is about to turn 30). It reads like a winning lotto ticket (their age that is) -- 22 23 24 29 33 33 34. Jackpot diba? But who's rejoicing?
The puzzlement cuts many ways. San Miguel invested in the future, which any winning team must do at some point, but lost well-loved team ambassadors in the process. Air 21 shipped out its young frontline to enjoy benefits (in whatever form, long-term or short-term) created by the entry of four SMB veterans. Some say it's unfair to San Miguel for giving up so much. Others say it's unfair to Air 21 for exactly the same reason. Then, there are those who feel it was most unfair to Danny S., Dondon and Dorian who seemed to have given one team everything yet, in the minds of their fans, gained so little in return. Everyone, apparently, has something to grieve about.
While the periphery mourns, the league marches on. The way 7 players will. The way two teams will. The way Seigle, who everyone thought would join and leave the league as a Beerman, will. The way Commissioner Chito Salud, who faced reporters last night and adamantly declared the trade was fair, will. The way the league did even after numerous challenges before.
Go cry foul. Go shed tears if you must. My heart sank when Toyota disbanded. But I recovered. Most of you will too. It won't be easy. But just like winning championships, proposing trades, improving teams and learning from controversy in the PBA, it's never as simple as 1, 2, 3. - GMA News

Yehey !!!! With San Miguel getting rid of the big salaries of Danny S (max), Dondon (max), Dorian (over 300k/mo) and Artadi (over 200k/mo) and just absorbing the rookie max contracts of Rabeh and Nonoy plus that of Guevarra (over 100k/mo).
It seems the Filipino consumers are the winner, check this out:

No losers, all winners in trade
By WAYLON GALVEZ

MANILA, Philippines – The trade between San Miguel (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/307272/smb-beefs-defense-with-entry-top-rookies) and Air21 that was consumated after a harried revision of the affected players is the kind of trade that benefited not only the teams but the league as well.
This was the consensus of different PBA coaches who analyzed the deal that sent Air21’s three top draft picks last year in exchange for four veterans from the powerful San Miguel franchise.
Both teams, said the observers, win in the trade, although the impact on each team will be different.
In the short term, Air21 gained more (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/307221/air21-express-now-a-pba-contender), but in the long run, it could be San Miguel.
Overall, the trade that brought Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306628/is-rabeh-worth-trading) and Rey Guevarra to the Beermen, has made San Miguel and Air21 look more formidable in the eyes of four other coaches.
Air21 got ace shooter Dorian Pena, Danny Seigle (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306866/seigle-and-samboy-a-tale-two-pba-stars) and Paul Artadi and Dondon Hontiveros.
“On a short term, I think it could help Air21 a little bit. But if you get the top three picks in the draft, just give them time and the chance to develop their skills. San Miguel, I think, is the clear winner,” Alaska coach Tim Cone said.
Cone, of course, is referring to Baclao, Al-Hussaini and Guevarra – the top three picks in last year’s PBA Rookie Draft.
In the previous Philippine Cup, the 6-foot-7 Al-Hussaini – the No. 2 pick – finished fifth in scoring with 17.5 points and eighth in rebounding with 8.8 boards per game, while Baclao – the No. 1 pick – led the all-Filipino conference in blocks with 2.5, while averaging 5.6 points and 8.5 rebounds (No. 10).
“San Miguel still have a lot of players, their core is still intact. These rookies will play behind the likes of Arwind Santos, Jay Washington and Alex Cabagnot,” Cone said.
Rain or Shine mentor Yeng Guiao shares the same opinion, saying: “San Miguel got younger, and Air21 got step-up players with championship experience to complement the young players. I think it’s a fair trade.”
According to Guiao, that should be the essence of a good trade, where teams will get better, as well as the league as it will ensure the balanced competition.
“For me, the commissioner (Chito Salud) would know what the interest of the league is. He considered not just the interest of one or two teams, but the entire league. It will take time for SMB before the three guys will blend with them, while the veterans Air21 got will take less time to adjust to their new team,” Guiao said.
Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio said that a trade doesn’t usually turn to a success story, as more often than not, it really takes time to get the new players accustomed to the new system, which is what he is facing now with the Bolts.

SMB beefs up Defense with entry of Top Rookies
By BRIAN YALUNG
March 3, 2011, 3:20pm
MANILA, Philippines – After taking into account the Air21 (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/307221/air21-express-now-a-pba-contender) franchise, we now move to the other PBA ballclub, the San Miguel Beermen.
Gone are PBA veterans Danny Seigle (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306866/seigle-and-samboy-a-tale-two-pba-stars), Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Pena and Paul Artadi. New to the fold are top PBA rookies Rabeh Al-Hussaini (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306628/is-rabeh-worth-trading), Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.
The move was cheered (and jeered) by many as the Beermen successfully infused youth in their aging PBA lineup. However, it seems that SMB’s backcourt has suffered from this PBA trade (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/307127/revised-smbair21-pba-trade-approved).
If you will notice, the three new rookies play the center, power forward and small forward positions respectively.
They lost two guards in Hontiveros and Artadi and as of this writing, only Al-Hussaini has the potential firepower to compensate somewhat the departure of Seigle and Hontiveros.
Baclao and Guevarra have so far turned in numbers that leave a lot to be desired.
Baclao has turned in manageable numbers through points and rebounds but Guevarra has yet to show what made him a part of the Smart Gilas team before.
Holdovers of the SMB camp include Jay Washington, Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, Danny Ildefonso, Joseph Yeo, Denok Miranda, Lordy Tugade (http://mb.com.ph/articles/220479/tugade-seigle-return), Paolo Hubalde, Sunday Salvacion and Mick Pennisi.
Of the mentioned holdovers, Washington, Santos, Cabagnot, Ildefonso, Tugade, Yeo and Salvacion are perhaps the players that can go berserk scoring on any given night.
So does this spell trouble for the SMB camp? Not necessarily.
If you will recall, a sorely missing link to their previous campaigns was defense. This was something that the team had when now B-Meg player
Marc Pingris (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/213222/bk-s-santos-traded-san-miguel) brought when he was still under the ballclub. Ever since his trade, defense was an eye sore.
True enough and knowing Coach Ato Agustin’s philosophy, the Beermen’s intent this time around seems to solidify their defensive needs. And being an import-laden conference, there is Ira Brown to contend with.
The PBA Commissioners Cup may not necessarily be the time to shine for these rookies but the opportunity will be there.
From the looks of it, defense will be the key. Al-Hussaini and Baclao showed that during their stint with the Ateneo Blue Eagles (http://www.mb.com.ph/article/274596/exateneo-centers-dispute-no-1-pick-pba-rookie-draft) and now they have to show that prowess once again.
The Beermen are still expected to be among the top contenders but the road will not be as easy as before.
All teams know for a fact that defense wins games and with the entry of the youthful big three, a new foundation seems to be in the works.
And to see if that is indeed the motif of the Beermen, we only have to wait until tomorrow to see how the entry of Al-Hussaini, Baclao and Guevarra works for the multi-titled PBA franchise.
Of course, this is discounting the possibility of more trades in the offing.

Player trades jolt our imagination
Sev Sarmenta
One Game At A Time
First Posted 01:40:35 04/03/2011
A trade in professional sports is always huge news that jolts our imagination.
It’s like a neighbor moving out after years of living on your street, or a friend at work heading off to another job or life abroad. There are mixed emotions and you end up thinking about it even if you try to push aside the reality of the change.
Take for instance the Air21 and San Miguel Beer trade this week. The first version of the deal was mind boggling enough: Air21’s top rookie picks last year, Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra were being traded for San Miguel’s Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi and Joseph Yeo.
Air21 was just beginning to rebuild while San Miguel was eager to erase the sting of the losses of the past two finals appearances.
The Commissioner’s Cup conference had just started and teams were still settling in with the short tournament format and the capabilities of the imports. The trade news was juicy and enticing to PBA fans and possibly horrendous for fans of the Express and the Beermen.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud, who has displayed a keen understanding of the game and the league’s culture, thumbed down the deal as it looked one-sided for San Miguel.
A second version was announced last Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome: Al-Hussaini, Baclao and Guevarra for Seigle and now Dorian Peña, Paul Artadi and the biggest catch for the Express, Dondon Hontiveros.
This version was allowed by the commissioner, who has to approve all league trades.
* * *
Personally, I don’t like to look into the cash angles of trades, if any, because that’s a matter between the teams involved. As a fan, I like to see instead how the trade impacts on the league and if it is fair for both parties.
So, as a popular phrase tells us, we have to “move on” after this trade. We will now check on how the players involved will fit in their new teams and if their respective “systems” will benefit from the trade.
San Miguel gets an early version of how its team might look like in the next five years with a handful of former college stars now playing together. Arwind Santos, Denok Miranda, Yeo, Al-Hussaini, and Baclao make for a youthful unit that’s strong on both ends of the floor.
Air21 may have gotten a batch of veterans but they are no doubt impact players who can score in bunches quickly.
Returning head coach Bong Ramos will have to make interesting adjustments and to find a piece of music that all his experienced players can dance to.
This will not be the last PBA trade. There is definite pressure for teams to win while staying within their salary caps and budgets.
There’s also the need to keep everybody on a team happy and that’s also why trades happen. If only there were more playing minutes to distribute and more than one ball on the court, life would be easier for PBA teams.

The Final Score: Even in the PBA, breaking-up is hard to do
By MICO HALILI
Mercy Ugdamin, a longtime fan of both San Miguel and Dondon Hontiveros, was stunned. Do you remember Mercy? I wrote a column about her last November (click here for link (http://www.gmanews.tv/sports/tfs/pba/206577/the-final-score-oh-mercy-a-pba-fans-unbridled-joy)). Five seconds before she heard my on-air announcement during the Talk 'N Text-Powerade game last March 2, she was still a PBA fan unaffected by the realities of professional sports. Five seconds later, she was still a fan, albeit less enthusiastic, more confused.
"Hala ano ba yung sinabi ni Mico sa TV?," Mercy recalls asking herself after hearing the news. "Nakaupo ako sa sofa. Tumayo ako. Pinatay ko yung TV dahil ayaw ko maniwala. Ten years po si Dondon sa SMB tapos bigla na lang nawala. Tapos humiga ako, pinikit ko mata ko at umiyak."
Mercy, however, is not alone.
San Miguel fans startled by Wednesday's trade are hardly unique. Where were you when Alaska and Johnny A divorced? When Jerry Codiñera left Alvin Patrimonio's side? When Paras and Magsanoc broke up? When Crispa said goodbye?
Still remember how it felt when Toyota disbanded?
I do. I was 10 years old. Toyota was my team the way the Philippines was my country.
Naturally, I believed Robert Jaworski was Batman and Francis Arnaiz was Robin. Naturally, Crispa, Atoy Co, Philip Cezar, even the color green became enemies (and people wonder why, in choosing schools, I passed on green and picked blue).
Then, in 1984, Toyota disbanded. Without the benefit of reading rumors online or hearing tsismis from friends, I never saw it coming. I saw the newspaper and discovered my team was dead. Jaworski-Fernandez, gone. Toyota-Crispa, gone. Me and my Super Corollas, gone. A 10-year old didn't just lose one irreplaceable player. I lost an entire team.
Still, I sympathize with Mercy. I struggled with change; Jaworski in a Gilbey's Gin uniform, Fernandez in a Beer Hausen jersey. As soon as she sees Hontiveros in ube and white, she'll likewise struggle. Hopefully, her heartbreak will pass. She'll cheer for Dondon again.
But will she cheer for Air 21 as well? Air 21 ships out blue-chippers as efficiently as they ship them in. Their sign-develop-then-trade strategy deserves an MA Thesis in Sports Management if you ask me. Yet I'm not sure if it's the kind of crafty-wheeling-and-dealing fans like Mercy will embrace.
As teams and players cope with change, Mercy deals with the uncomfortable truth. The PBA won't reverse trades while she mourns. Games will proceed. They didn't stop after a part of me died in '84, not even after the league lost its greatest rivalry that same year.
Some deals are just agonizing. So are many breakups. It's up to the league and its emotional fans to pick up the pieces, learn and move on. I did. The PBA will. I wish Mercy will too.
"Hindi ako sigurado kung manunuod ako sa game ng SMB mamaya. Wala na si Dondon," Mercy admits. "Nahati na ako sa dalawa. Nahati na puso ko sa dalawa." -- GMA News

There are talks that James Yap really wants to play for the National Team and so that they could give-in to James wish while not jeopardize BMeg's winning chances in the PBA, rumors have it that James Yap, Marc Pingris and Pong Escobal would go to MERALCO for MacMac Cardona, Nelbert Omolon, Mark Isip and Shawn Weinstein.

SMB should retire first the #7....if it's not retired, anyone can use it....SMB has also let other players use the numbers 6 (for agustin) and 11 (for asaytono)...
I think, San Miguel didn't retire #'s 6 and 11. After Agustin, many players used the number 6. As far as I can remember, Lamont Strothers wore that number in 1999 when Danny S arrived and used # 42. Then in 2001, it's Dorian Peña used # 6 before he changed it to # 4. In 2003, Billy Moody used it, and in 2006, it's LA Tenorio. Now, it's Rey Guevarra's turn.
As for number 11, I can only remember Francis Adriano used it after Nelson Asaytono.
So far, I can only remember the numbers 19 (Mon Fernandez), 9 ( Samboy Lim), 8 (Allan Caidic), 12 (Yves Dignadice) and recently 17 (Olsen Racela) officially retired. Hector Calma's # 14 was not immediately retired after he left the Beermen in 1995. If we can recall, Gilbert Castillo used it in 1997, and then Benjie Paras in 2003. I think they just officially retired it when Calma became the team manager of San Miguel.

since you mentioned it well, while SMC is said to be buying the Air21 franchise and Barako Bull is negotiating the sale of its team to Phoenix Petroleum.
As I have posted before, we can see in the future that 80% of the teams will be of MVP and SMB corporations while only 20% will be from other corporations. Its starting to take place because both are constantly expanding trying to buy out franchises.

After the SMB-AIR21 trade, Ato Agustin also made it clear he wants his former collegiate star Jimbo Aquino in his team.

LOL that's a highway robbery! It's like Meralco raping BMEG big time!

it's a fair trade if you ask me. Weinstein has a lot of upside, we all know what Cardona is capable of as well as Omolon and Isip is probably the most underrated player in the league.

The corporate war is at fever pitch. But this is all good. If there's one good thing about this, we know that there'll be a fourth competitive network in our midst to compete with ABS, GMA and now TV5. Interesting though since media has never been a corporate strength of the conglomerate. What probably motivated RSA to consider entering the media business is to match strength by strength with MVP. They're practically locked up in competitions in almost all fronts - infrastructure, telecommunications, utilities, mining, etc. But if San Miguel does want to strengthen its QTEL business, then convergence using media is the only way to go...

Macmac Cardona joined Harbour Centre in the 2005 PBL Unity Cup (April to June 2005), where he was named MVP of the conference. Cardona has previously been practicing with Welcoat Paints but he played his last amateur tournament with Harbour Centre because of the La Salle connection. Tonichi Yturri was designated as the first coach for Harbour Centre with Derrek Pumaren as team consultant.
The first Harbour Centre line-up was:
LA Tenorio, Paolo Bugia, Jenkins Mesina, Jerwin Gaco, Rey Mendoza, Magnum Membrere, Gabby Espinas, Robert Sanz, Jason Castro, Lou Gatumbato, Romel Dizon, Mark Cardona, Jayson Tiongson, Joel Solis, Larry Fonacier (Injured), JC Intal (School Commitment)On August 2005, Cardona was picked fifth overall by the Air21 Express during the annual 2005 PBA Draft but before the season started, he was eventually traded to the Talk 'N Text franchise. Despite a slow start in his rookie season, Cardona played significant minutes under Derrick Pumaren who replaced Joel Banal as the team's Head Coach.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Cardona
But when Harbour Centre joined the United Regional Basketball League (URBL) and the MBL-San Juan Invitational Cup basketball championship, Cardona has already left.
Dindo Pumaren replaced Tonichi Yturri as Harbour Centre's PBL Coach just before the PBL Heroes Cup was to start on November 2005.
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=305368
Jorge, Gallent was appointed new head coach of Harbour Centre in the PBL Heroes Cup. He replaced Dindo Pumaren in December 2005 who stepped down as head coach, saying he wants to concentrate on the title drive of the University of the East Warriors in the UAAP's 2006 Season.

points to think about:
1. will a SMC team trade with a MVP team? last transaction they made i think was years ago (j-wash for draft rights to jason castro).
2. will bmeg trade their 2 most popular cagers?

that's why i would be really, really surprised if their most clutch/best player/top gunner and their top defensive player will be traded for some players with due respect to their basketball talents.
that's a total bullshit. and besides, Purefoods/BMEG has always been what James wanted to play for. Okay, sir Nardy may confirm this.
and this is already James' team.
like what FireQ mentioned before, he is the last crossover PBA superstar/showbiz personality. and that's after Cap Alvin.
but if Cardona will go to, again a big IF, lol, BMEG, he will have to wear a good behavior badge. lol

Here's a list of players who were picked 2nd overall in the PBA draft:
2010-2011 - Rabeh Al-Husseini
2009-2010 - Rico Maierhoffer (technically the 3rd pick overall since Shell, the owner of the 2nd pick that season, has already disbanded)
2008-2009 - Jared Dillinger
2007-2008 - Ryan Reyes
2006-2007 - Arwind Santos
2005-2006 - Alex Cabagnot
2004-2005 - James Yap
2003 - Romel Adducul
2002 - Rafi Reavis
2001 - Mike Hrabak
2000 - Marc Victoria
Assuming this rumor is true, then the most likely player here would be Dillinger of TNT for LA Tenorio.

problem is there is no quality bigman that's available which TNT needs with Ranidel and Kelly most likely joining SMART GILAS. They cannot expect Gilbert Lao to be much help to Ali Peek. Rich Alvarez is not he used to be.
On the other hand it was Rene Pardo who said it himself at Snow Badua's Sports Radio Program that they would doing a trade as they need to re-tool as they have a number of players now injured (Maeirhofer, Raymundo, Reavis, Villanueva, Roger Yap and Allado).
With Kerby soon to return that would somewhat compensate for Rico's loss for the season. But with both Roger and Jonas hobling, Timberlake just cannot be the lead guard.

it could be desperation ..... plus having won a PBA title this year, MVP is maybe already satisfied with the PBA and rather reinforce SMART GILAS to make it stronger.
And as per sources, its not just a big man but also a draft pick. That could be used this coming draft where there is a big influx of players expected to join the draft including the Gilas players.

Point taken. A draft pick (or two) would tilt the balance a bit.
