New PBA draft rule closes door on new Fil-Ams

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan, Philippines – The 2011 PBA Rookie Draft is essentially close to Fil-foreign players, except Smart Gilas Pilipinas mainstays Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter.

This is the major ramification of a recent PBA board resolution opening the coming draft only to homegrown players now playing in the PBA D-League and to players who have served the national men’s team.

Under the league’s new draft policy, Fil-foreign players must have played at least two conferences in the D-League to be eligible for the annual draft.

“What the board wants is for the Fil-foreign players to know the Filipino culture first before being allowed to play in the PBA,” said PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial.

“And as they take residency in the D-League, Filipino basketball fans get to know them before they play in the pros,” Marcial added.

Among Fil-foreign players who’ve started residency in D-League are Pharex’s Jason Deustchman and N-LEX’s Cody Tesoro, Chris Ellis, Karl Dehasa and Cliff Hodge. Deustchman is a 6-foot-7 multi-position player.

The earliest these players can play in the PBA is 2012.

Same with players like Cebuano hotshot Junmar Fajardo.



The 6-foot-9 behemoth, who is reportedly planning to join the coming draft, must look for a team to play for in the current D-League tourney if he wishes to be accepted in the 2011 draft pool.

Liga Pilipinas players must also play in the D-League to gain eligibility in the draft.

Among top prospects for the coming draft are members of Smart Gilas Pilipinas and D-League aces Paul Lee, Carl Abueva and Eric Salamat.

Still up for discussion are Barako Bull’s draft rights.

Barako Bull’s 2011 first round pick has been traded to Talk n Text. The question is whether Barako Bull would automatically be considered the last placer in the current season and thus given a crack at the top pick via a lottery.

At the moment, Powerade, Air21 and Meralco are the other teams with a shot at the top pick.

The draft order will be finalized at season’s end. The draft is set Aug. 28.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini, the second pick behind teammate Nonoy Baclao in the last draft, is the statistical leader in the Rookie-of-the-Year race.

hmmm.... based on the article, i think fil-ams are required to play atleast 2 conferences in the DLeague, as opposed to just 1 for local players. unless nga they fall under 1 or 2.

Hey, I believe that Gilas CAN win it all.

But my sense of well-being requires that I be pragmatic and objective with my views.
It is nonsensical that one expect a 7th place finish in the tourney, I expect them to finish higher than that, looking at their buildup and results leading to the big thing.

I like powerade, but i think if Gary David wanted out. They'll just have to let him be. Trade him and Sean Anthony to Petron for Arwind Santos and Noy Baclao. I think this is just a fair deal. SMB is still big while completing their first five. While Powerade can get the ceiling they've been longing for and they can utilize their picks to snatch Lassiter and Casio.

Then TNT has a very good chance for a Grand Slam. Of all imports on that list, he has the best credentials. He and Gabe Norwood would be two players in the next conference who were able to play in the US NCAA Final Four. Norwood in 2006, Reynolds in 2009.

MANILA, Philippines—Former star Stephon Marbury has offered to electrify the fans of the Philippine Basketball Association.

The price, however, is too steep for the two-time NBA All-Star to bring his act to the pro league.

A local agent acquainted with Marbury's handler has talked to at least three teams, offering the services of the explosive 6-foot-2 playmaker for the import-laced Governor's Cup next month, according to a PBA insider.

Marbury reportedly earned $80,000 a month with the Foshan Dralions in the Chinese Basketball Association and the 34-year-old former high school phenom would have to agree to a humongous pay cut of $14,000, the maximum salary of imports in the PBA, for negotiations to push through.

“Stephon Marbury and his agent have not decided yet if he would want to play here on a lower price,” said the local agent on her Twitter account. “They will decide Wednesday LA time (Thursday in Manila).”

The agent refused to divulge the ballclubs that were approached for Marbury.

Marbury, who spent 13 seasons with five different teams in the NBA and reached All-Star status while playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2001 to 2003, should be a perfect fit for teams who need a 6-foot-2 import in the third conference.

These teams, based on their cumulative records so far, are Talk ‘N Text, San Miguel Beer, Derby Ace and Barangay Ginebra.

But he was less than impressive during his stint with the Philippine Patriots. If his long jumper is supposedly the big gun in his arsenal, he needs to work on it some more. He threw a truckload of bricks all season long in the ABL. Come to think of it, his first tour of duty in the PBA wasn't anything to write home about either.

Cuenca admitted that they had a little “misunderstanding” while in a bar, but they resolved their issue “within 10 minutes.” Cuenca described their misunderstanding as “very silly.”

“Now, we're friends,” Cuenca, one of the lead stars of “In The Name of Love,” told “The Buzz” on Sunday.

He added that he is not making a big fuss out of the controversy.

There’s a Serbian cager eager to play in the Philippines. He’s listed 6-8 but height sizing is often exaggerated to improve a player’s marketability. Maybe, he could fit in at 6-6, the limit for Powerade’s import in the PBA Governors Cup?

His name is Marko Latinovic who claims “some issues back home” prevented him from joining the Miami Heat summer camp last year. Latinovic, 23, was born in Belgrade where he learned how to play the game. He saw action for the Serbian clubs Avala-Ada and Partizan Belgrade before moving to the US to play in the NCAA.

Latinovic played two years at Phoenix College and two years at Erskine College. As a junior, he averaged 15.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. And as a senior, he normed 14.7 points and 8.8 rebounds.

“I have been following Philippine basketball for the past three years,” wrote Latinovic. “I have won many awards, championships. I am a wing player, long arms, fast, shooter and driver. Also, have ability to post up when necessary.”

Latinovic hopes to hook up with a PBA team and is ready to send full-game tapes to show him in action. The PBA has never recruited a Serbian import. Aside from Americans, the PBA has brought in imports from Nigeria (Julius Nwosu, Jeff Varem), Canada (Stewart Granger, Tony Simms, Jim Zoet, Denham Brown), Bahamas (Andy Thompson), Mexico (Adam Parada), Morocco (Reda Rhalimi) and the Virgin Islands (Leon Trimmingham). Chinese star Ma Jian once played in the PBL as an import but never made it to the PBA.

I couldn't agree more. JDV is one of the premier players in the PBA. He's still at the prime of his PBA Career. Let see if Reyes would improve under Coach Cone. Coach Tim always get the best from his new players. We might see the 2008-09 version of Jayr Reyes with the Alaska Aces.

MANILA, Philippines – Former PBA commissioner Noli Eala, who now works with San Miguel Corp., hinted on his Twitter account that trades are being worked out for all the three SMC teams (Petron Blaze, Barangay Ginebra and B-MEG Derby Ace).

Eala mentioned a meeting with SMC president Ramon Ang where they got the approval for no less than eight trade transactions.

“Trade prospects involve all SMC teams. Exciting days ahead,” Eala tweeted.

He said they’re looking at a big man and a wing guy for both Petron and Barangay Ginebra.

He stressed though that Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand won’t be touched at Ginebra and so does Jay Washington at Petron Blaze (formerly San Miguel Beer).

“Caguioa and Jayjay will retire with Ginebra,” said Eala who, on another tweet, answered a follower query, saying: “We love JWash in Petron.”

Eala said they hope to complete the deals before the third conference opens.

“(We have) eight options. If two are accepted, two others won’t happen anymore,” he said.

Bigger deal forced Devance to seek trade?

Manila, Philippines - Alaska Milk was forced to let go of Joe Devance after the talented Fil-Am forward begged off.

A reliable source said Devance wanted out of Alaska, hoping to get better compensation somewhere else.

Curiously, the University of Texas-El Paso product already got the maximum pay of P350,000 a month at Alaska.

“Apparently, he knows of other players from other teams receiving more than the maximum allowed in the league. He wants that too,” said The STAR source.

“Contract issues, mostly,” said Alaska coach Tim Cone as the reason why they traded Devance to Air21 for JayR Reyes.

Team manager Joaqui Trillo, however, stressed Devance is guaranteed of the maximum pay through the end of his current contract next year.

Meanwhile, Barako Bull gained the nod of the league for an extension on its deadline to make the decision on its Governors Cup comeback plan.

“They asked that the deadline be moved to 5 p.m. Monday. They said they will discuss the matter over the weekend,” said PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial.

Marcial also said ABS-CBN’s and TV5’s formal bids for the exclusive PBA TV rights will be tackled by the board in its next meeting.

At press time, Alaska and Air21 were still awaiting the approval of commissioner Chito Salud on the trade.

The speculation is that once the trade is approved, Air21 would deal Devance to the best bidders.

Devance, the 2008 top draft pick, has emerged as a major force in the league, breaking into the Mythical Second Team last year and contending for the Best Player of the Conference award in the recent Philippine and Commissioner’s Cups.

Trillo admits they now have a big void to fill in their lineup.

“We’ll try what we can do. We can restore the team balance in the coming draft. We have one first-round and three second-round picks,” said Trillo.

Cone remains optimistic.

“With Wesley (Gonzales) and JayR, we’ve added length and athleticism, and we’ve always believed JayR is a player you can build around,” said Cone.

Alaska earlier acquired Gonzales for rookie Elmer Espiritu.

I'll cross my fingers too with regards to JayR's potentials, I wish he'd blossom into a shooting big man.. :) While i feel the trade was good (not great) for Alaska, i think Reyes will struggle with the Triangle as he's not really a high-IQ basketball kind of player. Not too sure if he CAN adjust to Cone's system. We will see.

Of course we know who the real winner is here..... no not tv 5, not the pba fans either.... but abs cbn....

im sure they got something from MVP in return for not submitting anything.

I doubt it really, Byron. Let's just say that the P900M initial bid for the PBA was an amount that ABS-CBN couldn't afford. Studio 23 isn't exactly making money while ABS-CBN Channel 2 is practically the only remaining business that's earning for the Lopez Group. They spend P900M for the coverage, there's no guarantee for them that they can recoup this.

On the other hand, MVP's interest in acquiring Channel 13 is already well-publicized. For Channel 13 to gain initial impetus to kickstart their broadcast campaign focused into sports, the crown jewel would obviously be the PBA coverage. Hence, if MVP doesn't get the PBA coverage, he won't exactly expect the network to do well sales-wise. Neither will it get the publicity that the network would need to generate viewers. The PBA would be a plus for them even if they don't make money out of it because it would help the network attract the viewers - sports lovers who would want to make Channel 13 as a staple for their sports-viewing pleasure. It's a win-win situation for MVP, regardless of how the PBA does well in terms of generating advertisers.

The STAR source said Devance would not stay long at Air21 as the 6-foot-6 Fil-Am forward is being pursued by Derby Ace.

The same source said Barangay Ginebra would be involved in the transaction necessary to bring Devance over to the Llamados.

KG Canaleta and Billy Mamaril are the SMC players tipped to be part of the three-way trade.

If plans don’t miscarry, Derby Ace will be Devance’s third team after Rain or Shine and Alaska Milk.

This is correct. If ever the PBA grants the coverage rights to TV5, the network will not air it on Channel 5 but at IBC Channel 13 where they have purchased blocktime hours already. While IBC 13 remains to be a government-run network, it is also losing money, hence, the need for this station to sell viewership hours to interested groups. TV5 has decided to buy a certain number of hours per day from IBC 13 to build its sports network. The government earns money from the blocktime hours sale, TV5 gets a medium to broadcast sports programs for the public and possibly earn advertising revenues from these.

It is also interesting to note that MVP, the owner of TV5, is interested in purchasing IBC 13 as soon as the government gives the signal to sell the network and its facilities. There are reports that while MVP is interested to buy IBC 13, Ramon Ang of the SMC bloc is also interested in purchasing RPN 9 from the government. This would lead to more funds for the government coffers brought about by the privatization of these two networks. Only NBN Channel 4 would be retained as the official government network and will not be put on sale.
