I doubt it really, Byron. Let's just say that the P900M initial bid for the PBA was an amount that ABS-CBN couldn't afford. Studio 23 isn't exactly making money while ABS-CBN Channel 2 is practically the only remaining business that's earning for the Lopez Group. They spend P900M for the coverage, there's no guarantee for them that they can recoup this.
On the other hand, MVP's interest in acquiring Channel 13 is already well-publicized. For Channel 13 to gain initial impetus to kickstart their broadcast campaign focused into sports, the crown jewel would obviously be the PBA coverage. Hence, if MVP doesn't get the PBA coverage, he won't exactly expect the network to do well sales-wise. Neither will it get the publicity that the network would need to generate viewers. The PBA would be a plus for them even if they don't make money out of it because it would help the network attract the viewers - sports lovers who would want to make Channel 13 as a staple for their sports-viewing pleasure. It's a win-win situation for MVP, regardless of how the PBA does well in terms of generating advertisers.
Well I am coming from one of the Lopez' group of co. And to tell you honestly, they made very good deals selling majority shares in major companies such as NLEX, Meralco, Etc. They invested in something bigger and more profitable businesses. Anyway, one point really. They know how to deal.
PBA is bad advertising business. The sponsors are but limited to those member teams and sister companies. So big companies now that rivals Coca Cola, Powerade, SMB, Ginebra, Purefoods, BMEG, Air 21, Alaska, Barako Bull, Meralco, TNT, Maynilad, PLDT, Smart, Magnolia, and other of its smaller subsidiaries (most of which do not even sponsor commercials for the PBA) such as Shell, Phoenix, Globe, Tanduay, Beer na Beer, Colt 45, LBC, Cobra, Pepsi, Selecta, Lipovitan, Bayantel or even Lactum, Sustagen, are prohibited to do so.
Its very evident these past years. Attendance, yes its good, but ratings? commercial sponsorship? Studio 23 just placed teasers of their movies and shows in between coverage to fill in the gaps.
That's why i'm saying, its either there was a payoff to give way (i know this happens, i just know) or abs knows its a bad investment and will just wait for the PBA to knock on their doors again after being short changed by their TV coveror, at their price at that.

with the JDV trade, its not farfetched for De Vance to end up with Smart Gilas then ???? if that happens then MVP definitely wants Smart Gilas to go down fighting even if they lose...... with Williams, Taulava, De Vance, Douhit as the Bigboys then Hontiveros bolstering Lassiter/Lutz, and Alapag bolstering Casio, we have a stronger Gilas animal for its last hurrah.
Toroman bares Gilas wish list
By Joaquin Henson, The Philippine Star
Posted at 03/01/2011
MANILA, Philippines - Smart-Gilas coach Rajko Toroman disclosed the other day his wish list of 10 candidate PBA players to reinforce the national basketball team vying for a ticket to the 2012 London Olympics at the FIBA-Asia Championships in Wuhan, China, on Sept. 15-25.
Toroman named Meralco’s Asi Taulava, Talk ‘N’ Text’s Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes and Ranidel de Ocampo, San Miguel Beer’s Arwind Santos and Jay Washington, B-Meg’s James Yap and Alaska’s Sonny Thoss and Joe DeVance in his 10-man wish list.
Toroman said of the 10, only five will be picked for the national squad............................................. .

I don't think the commissioner will let this trade proposal go.
In terms of talent and marketability, Devance is obviously superior to either Salvador or Canaleta.
So for sure, Comm. Salud will ask for a revision should this proposal
be submitted to his office.

Trade rumors swirl around Bolts, Kings, and Painters
BY NOLI CORTEZ
MERALCO is again in the center of trade rumors, but coach Ryan Gregorio stressed the offer must be one he cannot refuse for the Bolts to take part in any deal.
"Kailangan lamang kami," Gregorio said yesterday. "Kung quits-quits lang, then there’s no reason for us to trade."
Gregorio issued this statement amidst talks that Meralco, Ginebra and Rain or Shine are brewing a trade in time for the season-ending Governors Cup that starts on June 11.
Contacted yesterday, Commissioner Chito Salud, whose stamp of approval must be affixed before any trade is realized, said his office has yet to receive any document relating to such a deal.
Ginebra coach Jong Uichico and Rain or Shine’s co-owners Terry Que and Raymund Yu also denied it, but the rumors persist.
Under the supposed trade scenario, Bolts forward Gabby Espinas goes to the Kings along with the Elasto Painters’ Larry Rodriguez. In turn, the Kings give up Willie Miller to ROS and JC Intal to Meralco while the Bolts also get Doug Kramer from ROS. The Painters will also get Meralco’s first round pick in 2013.
"Not true," said Gregorio, also the giant utility company’s chief of basketball operations.
"I have not thought about that equation and the mere fact it means letting go of Espinas stops it on my end," he added.
Gregorio insisted Espinas is one of the cornerstones of his team, along with Mark Cardona, Sol Mercado and Reynel Hugnatan, the latter two being acquired in a trade just before the mid-season Commissioner’s Cup.
"That’s why I’m trying to get players who can solidify and benefit my roster for the longer duration," he said.
Gnawing at Gregorio is the recent anterior cruciate ligament tear that starting point guard Chris Ross suffered during a recent friendly with Rain or Shine.
The Bolts are already without starting center Asi Taulava, who is on loan to the Smart-Gilas national team.
"My roster landscape changed with two of my starters out," admitted Gregorio.
Free agent playmaker Chris Timberlake is currently trying out and Gregorio said he has a "good shot" of making the team.
Still, Gregorio is not discounting the possibility of a trade, but pointed out it has to be "really, really convincing" for him to push through with it.
"Nobody in my team is untouchable, but any trade we do must be one that can change the course of our campaign. Otherwise, stay muna ako."
With forward-center Rico Villanueva still recuperating from an ACL surgery, the Kings are hard-pressed to fill the slack in their frontline after do-it-all forward Rudy Hatfield opted to return to United States to attend to family matters.

So why do you think the JDV to Jay-R Reyes + 2 second round picks approved by the comm then??
Plus having enough playing mins. both Salvador and KG are good players that can be a cornerstones in every team!

the trio of Ross, Omolon and Espinas and or Ren Ren.
Ross is a promising young PG, while Espinas is one of the most efficient contributors in the league, same with Omolon and Ren Ren is just the sweetener. and if he still doesnt want them. Meralco should break the terrible back court tandem of Cardona and Mercado(sorry RG youre no Spoelstra)

Because Comm. Salud thinks JDV has an edge over Reyes. So a one on one trade will not be fair. Therefore adding a 2 second rounders will offset the advantage of JDV ( according to the commissioner).
But for Salvador and KG, I don't see either of them in the level of the talent and marketability of JDV. JDV is on his peak of being a star while both Salvador and KG are merely role players and already hounded various injuries.
So the way I see it and in my opinion, the commisioner will still ask for a revision as soon as the trade proposal will reach his office.

No argument they got a good deal in the selling of NLEX, Meralco, Maynilad et al to the Metro Pacific Group. MVP was willing to shell out good money to the Lopezes for majority control over these companies, and the Lopezes were handsomely rewarded for such.
But imagine how much Lopez would have sold these two had they been run in the same efficiency as how the MVP Group does it today. The Lopez family couldn't sell these companies at even higher prices simply because they weren't well-managed. When MVP took over, profitability zoomed at levels that the Lopezes can only wish for.
Perhaps, the PBA does appear to be a bad investment. This, at least in the eyes of the Lopezes. Remember, they did the same in 2008, offering a much lower bid (or did they actually bid at all?) compared to Solar, and losing out.
The question though is what does MVP see in the PBA that the Lopez Group can't? Can MVP bring in more advertisers to meet the P900M requirement of the PBA while at the same time churn in a nice profit for themselves? Perhaps, and yes, maybe he can. But we all admit that it's the Lopez Group that may have the best chance of bringing in advertisers to the table because of their solid experience in the tv industry.
Which is why I see MVP looking at this as more of a "setting the stage" for building the sports network. If it earns, well and good. If not, then it'll be regarded as part of its investment cost as the PBA will still be the most effective tool in building a name for MVP's sports network.

ABS and PBA won't see eye to eye coz of the lockout clause regarding ads. Now, how can ABS recover the 900 million if they won't be allowed those ads.?
TV5 should improve their signal esp. in the provinces. Also that IBC 13, with MVP's money this is not a long shot. But still I would have preferred S23 and ABS' reach.

just an advice: don't expect it coming. coz TV5 and IBC 13 are going to switch over to digital broadcasting as what abs did. so just buy a digi box receiver while it's still cheap or get cable subscription. coz by the year 2015 NTC is shutting down analog transmissions and will only transmit digital tranmissions.

PBA commissioner approves Devance trade to Llamados

It’s final, Joe Devance is now a B-Meg Derby Ace Llamado while KG Canaleta and Jondan Salvador are now with the Air21 Express.
After two days of studying the trade transaction, Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Atty. Chito Salud approved the two-team, three-player deal.
“Two big men in exchange for Devance? I think that’s fair enough," Salud told GMA News. “But it took me two days before I finally made a decision because I wanted to carefully study the trade. In the end, I felt the trade is fair enough for both squads."
Devance will be playing in his third team in the past four seasons. He first suited up for the Welcoat Dragons (now Rain or Shine Elasto Painters), but was traded for Sol Mercado in the 2008-2009 season.
Only last week, the 6-foot-7 Fil-foreign player was shipped by the Aces to the Express for Jay-R Reyes. After a two-day stopover with Air21, Devance was sent to the Llamados, ending his turbulent journey in yet the best season of his career.
Canaleta, a multi-titled Slam Dunk champion, is returning to his original team. He was part of the Express squad that made it all the way to the Finals of the 2008 Fiesta Conference but lost to Barangay Ginebra.
Salvador, an undersized power forward, will help shore up the Express frontline. The team has Danny Seigle, Dorian Pena and Carlo Sharma alternating up front. - Rey Joble/OMG, GMA News

Devance goes to Bmeg, Canaleta and Salvador to Air21. Hmmm ...
JDV has one of the most extensive offensive skillsets in the league. He can shoot from way out, can dribble and handle the ball like a point, and is a pretty good finisher. Pretty tall too. Not much of a defender, but more than makes up for it with his vast arsenal of offensive weapons. A walking mismatch, they say.
Air21 gets Nino Canaleta, an on-and-off scorer (mostly off :D) who has fallen in love with taking awful, ill-advised threes and outside shots. Too clumsy to guard smaller and quicker 2s and 3s, and too much of a lightweight to handle burlier 4s and 5s. He can occasionally block shots though. Jondan Salvador, an oft-injured undersized 4 with very limited scoring abilities. His heft and bulk (very useful in clogging the paint) have been hell on his knees though. Hence, the gimpy legs.
Lopsided much?

Well, Hatfield isn't supposed to play, but Eric Menk did convinced him. Reavis and Mamaril are not good post operator, Hatfield is decent. Last time I check Jong already is asking for big men since 2007 :P Seriously our team have no post operator and Jong's play are mostly motion offense.

Obviously it's a fair trade since there's "cash" involved". How much, we don't know :D
Sarcasm aside, this is what you get in a league where there's no defined CBA (or at least, concrete rules regarding trades)... Teams will most definitely will try to circumvent the rules.
(Doesn't help that there's an unwritten competition between the two largest franchise--- TNT and SMC regarding "buying" of players. ;) )
And can you imagine the "positioning" of these teams when the Gilas draftees arrive? Oh boy, that would be one mad offseason.
Interesting times for the PBA ahead (well at least for TNT and SMC :D)

It's because many feel that Eman has nothing to do in Toroman's team. If Eman cannot show convincingly in the PBA where he is the tallest player among the ten in the floor. How much more in the ASIAN circle?

PBA’s own production ready in case Board turns down TV5 offer
6/15/2011 | PBA, Smart Gilas | 0 comments »
source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv
Left as the lone bidder for the coverage rights of the Philippine Basketball Association’s 37th season, TV5’s fate will be known when the league’s Board of Governors meet Wednesday.
But is TV5 already assured of the coverage rights?
“We’re all studying our options," a highly-placed source from the league told GMA News Online. “There’s still a possibility TV5’s offer might be turned down even though wala silang kalaban sa bidding."
The same source also said the PBA already has its in-house production and sales group, which can be tapped if ever negotiations with TV5 will not push through.
“If ever hindi na-approve ng Board and TV5, the league will look for another network outfit and I would say, right now, there are interested networks which want to carry the games via block time agreement," added the source.
PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud reportedly met with officials of ABS-CBN on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of a block time agreement. ABS-CBN, whose UHF channel carries the games of the league until August in a block time agreement with Solar Entertainment, pulled out of the bidding war with TV5 for the coverage rights next
season.
A block time agreement with ABS-CBN using the league’s in-house production and sales group will enable the PBA to save expenses on TV coverage.
“They’re (in-house production and sales group) ready," added the source. “We’ve created them at a time when Solar Entertainment [was] facing financial and technical problems in handling the coverage of the league."
Solar Entertainment, which already advised the league earlier it will no longer bid for the coverage rights next season, also experienced several technical glitches while handling the coverage and was not spared by the league of hefty fines this season.
TV5, which bolstered its network outfit by coming up with several sports programs, was left alone as a bidder. Vito Lazatin, sports manager of the network, explained the reasons why the network wants to pursue on the coverage of the PBA starting next season.
“We believe in the PBA. Mahal ng tao ang PBA and we want to be a part of it," said Lazatin. “I cannot speak in behalf of the PBA regarding its plan of having its in-house production and sales group, but we in TV5 would like to pursue our interest for the coverage rights of the league."
A league source privy of the negotiations said that TV5’s five-year offer amounting to P900 million has been reduced to P800 million. Included in the package is the coverage of the D-League and radio.
“They (TV5) changed it from P900 million to P800 million. The Board is still studying the offer and will come up with a decision on Wednesday’s meeting," said the source.
Commissioner Salud neither confirmed nor denied the offer, saying they will come out with the figures after the Board meeting.
If ever the PBA and TV5 reach an accord, the games will be shown on the network’s sports outfit Aksyon TV (AKTV) via a block time agreement with IBC-13.
“A part of the deal with the PBA is that the league will be included as one of the flagships of the network. We will also improve the facilities in IBC-13 and assign employees to hold offices there," said a network executive, who refused to be identified. - KBK, GMA News

Jeez...after all the buzz A21 has caused now this. No wonder they abstained on the Board vote for Phoenix's purchase, thus blocking it from approval. Brave move, especially since it was the new Board Rep who made the call...who from what we've read runs a "sister" company of A21...waste management something...not related to current BOC...but perhaps not unlike Tony Soprano?
Trades they've made so far are suspicious to say the least, leaves you to wonder how Salud is able to turn a blind eye to scheming manipulation of league rules...or perhaps he simply does not want to wake up with a horse's head in his bed? :D
Who knows, A21 might even trade an entire team... ;) now that would be interesting...ssshhhhh...

It would be interesting how the Board would vote when it deals with the Air 21 purchase of Barako. I still couldn't find the logic of rejecting the Phoenix deal, except for the fact that it will pose a problem with Petron, a subsidiary of the San Miguel Group.
Now, assuming that Waylon Galvez's Manila Bulletin article is accurate, then the team that would have benefited the most from the Phoenix rejection was SMC, not just because it bars a competitor from joining the league, but moreso because of SMC's intent to run a 4th team in the league.
Which is why I don't know how Air 21 would get their seven votes. They would have the yes from their three teams - Petron, B-Meg and BGK, plus the two votes from the protagonists in the sale - Air 21 and Barako. That's 5 votes. They need two more. The remaining 5 are Meralco and TNT of the MVP Group, Powerade, Alaska and ROS.
Do I expect a quid pro quo arrangement between RSA and MVP? If MVP gives his two votes, he allows SMC to officially run 4 teams. In return, the RSA Group would vote in favor of MVP's AKTV to air the PBA games on IBC 13 where MVP is a blocktimer. Should this be plausible? I won't be surprised.
However, if MVP stands pat and not allow Air 21 to buy Barako's franchise, then Air 21 and Barako would be hard-pressed. They won't get a yes from Wilfred Uytengsu's Alaska. So they may have to find ways to get Raymond Yu / Terry Que and JB Baylon's vote to approve the sale. Will they? There'll be a lot of backroom negotiations just to have this deal sealed, in my opinion. I don't think ROS and Powerade would want to act the deal-breakers though. They would vote no if they're sure that Air 21 won't be able to muster the votes. They would vote yes if they're sure that the deal has been sealed already.

Here's the Galvez article I mentioned above:
Sale of Air21 franchise to San Mig seen, source says
By WAYLON GALVEZ
June 16, 2011, 12:10am
MANILA, Philippines — Although the sale of the Barako Bull franchise to the Lina Group of Companies is yet to be approved by the Philippine Basketball Association board of governors, there are already talks of another blockbuster sale, this one involving the sale of Air21’s franchise to San Miguel Corporation.
A highly reliable source said negotiations between San Miguel and Air 21, which is owned by Lina’s group, have been in the works for nearly two months and somehow accelerated when Barako’s sale appeared imminent.
This is how the deal will appear should the parties come to an agreement.
1) The Lina Group (Air21) will buy Barako Bull for about P50 million, payable when the current PBA season ends.
2) SMC will then buy Air21 for about P80 million, the money to be used by Air21 to pay for the Barako franchise.
The difference from the sale will be used by the Lina group to sustain the Barako franchise because at this juncture, it has players with no significant quality to compete in the league.
San Miguel, meanwhile, will have four teams, all of which will be competitive, including Air 21 whose lineup has been infused with high-caliber talent, many of whom had been dealt by SMC in a trade months ago.

Acklium may have gotten confused with the article posted by Rey Joble when the latter cited that Toyota was the first team to have sister teams in the PBA. This happened in 1978 when the 7/Up Uncolas' franchise disbanded after the 1977 season. Toyota team owner and Marcos crony Ricardo Silverio, Sr. then acquired 7/Up's rights and put up his Filmanbank team (a commercial savings bank owned by Silverio). As such, the star player of 7/UP, Danny Florencio, was immediately moved to Toyota to join forces with Jaworski, Arnaiz, Fernandez, and another transferee from RTO, Estoy Estrada. Filmanbank played two seasons in the PBA before giving up its franchise rights to the CDCP Builders of Rodolfo Cuenca, another known Marcos crony and golfing buddy.
Note that Danny Florencio was the league's leading scorer in the 1977 season with a scintillating 32.3 ppg, the best ever in league history to date. Hence, when Florencio joined the Tamaraws, Toyota became even stronger. Florencio was so good that in his first season with the Silverio franchise, he led the league again in scoring with 23 ppg, ahead of teammate and MVP winner Robert Jaworski who had 20 ppg, 8.8 rpg and 12 apg for the season.

Lina IT firm keen on Bull takeover
By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star) Updated June 16, 2011 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The Lina Group’s new company that is dealing on information technology (IT) is the one aspiring to take over the Barako Bull franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association.
The franchise transfer procedure has begun with Barako Bull having informed the PBA board of its sale agreement with the Lina Group. League commissioner Chito Salud will make a recommendation to the board after evaluating its corporate papers.
“Under the PBA constitution, there’s a procedure to be followed. Upon receiving the letter of intent, the Office of the Commissioner will require the transferee or the eventual buyer ( to submit) corporate papers and documents which the commissioner will evaluate for proper recommendation to the board,” said Salud.
Barako Bull, on vacation leave in the league since the second conference, needs to dispose of the franchise before the end of the current season or it loses all its rights as PBA member ball club.
The Lina Group is now after the franchise, hoping to use it as vehicle to promote its new IT (information technology) company.
With Sheila Lina as its chief executive officer, it’s expected that the oldest daughter of Bert and Sylvia Lina would sit on the PBA board in the near future.
Meanwhile, the PBA board of governors set “non-negotiable” parameters it would bring in returning to the negotiating table with telecast bidder TV5.
Board chairman Rene Pardo said TV5 is still their priority but they have fallback options in case the negotiation bogs down.
“There are certain features in their offer that are inconsistent and contradictory to the terms of reference (set by the league). Both parties will go back to the negotiating table to clarify the issues,” said Salud.
Salud, however, stressed the board has set parameters that will guide them in the meeting.
The league commissioner said they have had exploratory talks with Studio23 and NBN-4 for possible co-production deal. They’re also set to sit down in a meeting with QTV11.
The PBA opted to look at its other options as TV5 reduced its offer for the exclusive PBA TV rights from P.917 billion to P.8 billion over five years.
In its latest offer, TV5 is giving the PBA only P650 million in fat cash plus P150 million for marketing and promotion.
The league would have got around P.5 billion from Solar Sports at the end of the current PBA season. Their deal covers a period of only three years.

Qatar is probably the most influential member in the FIBA-Asia chapter so any sanctions to be given against them would be a shock. Qatar helps FIBA-Asia in terms of funding and one of their officials is part of FIBA-Asia's top brass. I doubt if anything would prosper here.
As for the Calma et al issue, I doubt if this would be raised ever again. And it's not Calma per se. The entire participation of the PHL in the Asian Youth competitions from 1970 to 1982 was marred with overaged players being fielded in. So long as teams are complying today, I doubt if it will be an issue...

Gin Kings' Willie Miller to Air 21 for Niño Cañaleta, draft pick
07/18/2011 | 01:58 PM
Barangay Ginebra Kings' Willie Miller has been traded to Air 21 for Niño Cañaleta and a 2012 first round draft pick.
PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial confirmed with GMA News Online that the Gin Kings will get the high-flying Cañaleta from Air 21 along with the 2012 draft pick.
The acquisition of the draft pick seems to have been done in preparation for the influx of draftees from the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team that will be available that year.
Miller, a two-time PBA Most Valuable Player award winner, was acquired in the 2009-2010 conference to address the point guard issues of the team. This year, Ginebra comes into the season with a healthy group of point guards in Jayjay Helterbrand, Mike Cortez and Rob Labagala.
In letting go of Miller, Ginebra acquires a 4-time slam dunk champion, possibly along with a national team member.
In return, Air 21 will have an additional scoring point guard option, along with Wynne Arboleda and Dondon Hontiveros. — Renee Fopolan/RSJ, GMA News

Note that the rules are very simple on free agency. When a player is dropped from a team's roster, it's a free-for-all for the said player's availability. Unless Air 21 is a sister team of any other team, that means that non-sister teams will have first crack at the free agent. After 5 days and no one signs him up, the sister team can now absorb him.

Hey Jay, do you know the exact rules on FA signings? What happens if two non-sister teams are interested in a released player-turned-free agent? i assume it's just player's option (and of course, he goes where the money is)?
Teams (particularly, rich teams like ehem and ehem) are just looking and finding loopholes with ease with the current trade and free agency rules. The commissioner (meaning the entire board itself...) should tweak the rules a bit and make it harder for teams to do this.
Say, for trades, make the deadline way earlier, like middle of the elims. For free agency, teams with the worse record should have the first crack..etc etc..

i don't think that your last sentence is a good idea.
again, that's rewarding under performing and underachieving teams. mediocre teams are rewarded in the draft, and that alone is enough. now, if their management is natutulog sa pansitan, it's not the fault of the other managers, right?
but, anyway, deadline of submitting a lineup (trades, FA pick ups) should coincide on the last date of the eliminations. but i guess we have to make a leeway to import signings.
this alone should be enough.
going back to that urbiztondo signing, i did not get the wisdom of it. unless as pbaologist tweeted, he will be used as a trade bait to miller. bwahahahaha
but come to think of it, bmeg has already a solid guard core, what more with the coming of another PG import.

‘PBA should rethink trade deadline rules’ (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/pba-should-rethink-trade-deadline-rules)

Is the Willie Miller-KG Canaleta trade legal? Can a team like Ginebra, which is already in the semifinal round of the PBA Governors’ Cup, trade a player to Air 21, a team which has already been eliminated?
According to PBA commissioner Chito Salud, the trade was completely in accordance with the league’s rules.
“Nothing was violated,” Salud wrote in a text message to InterAKTV.
“The deadline for the trades is a day after the elims.”
Canaleta will thus be eligible to play in the Gin Kings’ last elimination round game against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Wednesday.
Miller, a two-time Most Valuable Player, will have to wait until next season to find out whether he will stay with the Express or find himself playing elsewhere. But the talented lefty’s rights are now with Air 21, which lost all their eight games in the single-round elims this conference.
But several PBA officials are open to the idea trade rule to be revised for next season.
Incoming PBA board vice chairman JB Baylon of Powerade, board member Pato Gregorio of Talk ‘N Text, and Alaska coach Tim Cone shared their thoughts on the rule that allows a team still in contention for a championship to trade with a squad that has been eliminated.
“Good question. Maybe we should,” Baylon wrote in a text message when asked if the PBA board would consider revisions on the rule that allowed the Ginebra-Air 21 trade to go through.
“I’m interested to know what the PBA will say,” added Gregorio, whose Tropang Texters are seeking a rare Grand Slam.
Cone, one of the most vocal coaches and the winningest mentor among active bench tacticians in the league, believes the PBA should make some changes when it comes to “trading and releasing” players.
“A revision should be rethought, definitely.” said Cone. “Also, releasing of players should be looked at.”

Lina firm to be PBA’s first dot-com company (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/lina-firm-to-be-pbas-first-dot-com-company)
Reynaldo Belen, InterAKTV · Wednesday, July 20, 2011 · 5:44 pm
Despite Air 21 bowing out of the race early in the season-ending 2011 PBA Governors’ Cup, the Lina Group of Companies are still optimistic about next season.
The Bert Lina-owned group will field not one but two teams in the 37th season. Shopinas, an e-commerce firm headed by Sheila Lina, daughter of Bert, will be the first dot-com company to see action in Asia’s oldest play-for-pay league.
“We want to introduce Shopinas to the PBA,” Air 21 board governor Manny Alvarez told InterAKTV.
The Lina Group of Companies now control two PBA teams after its purchase of the Barako Bull franchise was approved. But with the old Barako roster virtually empty of players, Shopinas will have to build the team from the ground up.
“Shopinas is bent on putting up a young team,” said Alvarez. “We haven’t discussed the concession that we want because the immediate goal of the company at this time is to look for a team manager and a head coach.”
A one-stop online store, Shopinas was launched last year to allow entrepreneurs and online bargain hunters to shop, pay, and have items delivered right at their doorstep. The launch coincided with other Lina Group products Air 21 Global and Air 21 iBayad.
Shopinas will be the fourth product carried by the Lina Group since joining the PBA in 2002.
The franchise debuted as FedEx, but was forced to drop the name after the international courier company transferred its main Asian hub from the Philippines to China. After the switch, the team carried the Air 21 name.
In 2008, the franchise switched its name to Burger King, with plans for the company to be sold to businessman Mikee Romero along with the basketball franchise. But the deal fell through, and the team reverted back to Air 21 in 2010.

DT: To answer your question, an unrestricted free agent has the option of choosing which team to sign up for, regardless of salary offer. So even if Alaska would have offered a higher salary than B-Meg, it's still Urbiztondo's call to select which team to play for. Perhaps, the player would want a more stable tenure, and would opt for lower pay but longer contract. Or vice versa. Ultimately, it's the player's call since he's an unrestricted FA. I'd prefer this way rather than set a rule as the team with the worse record getting first crack, etc. because the rule favors the player and not a team. I've been very critical of the league's rules of continuous restricted free agency which, short of saying, ties up the player to a team that signed him up. That is ok after a few playing years, but I feel that the player should be allowed to explore other options on his own when he becomes, say, a 5 year vet. But then, I understand the limitations that the league has so I won't dwell too much on that.
I agree that trade deadlines should be set. Although if I'm not mistaken, the PBA does impose this rule, and normally, the last day for trading would be the end of the eliminations of every conference and will start all over again when the conference ends. This prevents teams to get undue advantage by getting players from eliminated teams to suit up for a playoff-bound one. Ginebra was able to "get away" with this because they conveniently got Canaleta for Miller one day prior to the end of the eliminations. Should it be earlier, just like how the NBA does it with still several games prior to the end of the regular season? Probably, but it may not be realistic.
The elimination phase is not as long as the NBA season. The NBA's trade deadline is normally set on a February, which is probably when teams still have to play around 30 games. This is an exceptional rule because it won't tilt the odds dramatically for a playoff-bound team by getting a topnotch player prior to the deadline. Unlike if they did so a few games before the end of the regular season.
That's the dilemma of the PBA now. Assuming a maximum of 18-20 games (for 9 to 10 teams in a double round robin) is played in the eliminations, when actually is the best time to hold the trade deadline? Should it be before the end of the first round of eliminations? Should it be only after the second conference of a three-conference season, but not including the playoffs? It's difficult to second guess, but here's my point - you don't have to go far as to finding out which team management has done well in tiptoeing the rules to make things favorable for them.

“Karamihan ng mga lumalapit sa akin, ang tanong ‘Idol naglalaro ka pa ba?’" – Marlou Aquino
Just like any other night in the PBA, Marlou Aquino stays on the bench. Even camped on his chair, for what turns out to be the duration of the tournament, it’s easy to know Marlou, now 38, was once great. In the season finale of Meralco last July 20, Marlou starts and finishes the conference the same way: without breaking a sweat.
“Nalulungkot din ako dahil patapos na yung career ko," Marlou, the 1996 PBA Rookie of the Year, says.“Ganun talaga, habang tumatanda, bumababa din career natin. Minsan mahirap tanggapin. Pero ganun talaga ang reality ng isang basketball player."
In possibly Marlou Aquino’s final conference in the PBA, he didn’t play a single game, wasn’t given a chance to make one point or grab one rebound. And the crime of all crimes; he wasn’t allowed to take even one “kili-kili shot". That last one is depressing. Because the one thing Marlou can still do, even in the twilight of his career, is entertain. People still cheer when Marlou blocks a shot. The man is still a star.
“I think he could have achieved more milestones," Richard Del Rosario, who played alongside Marlou Aquino when Sta. Lucia won its first PBA championship in 2001, believes. “If he played the way he could really play."
For every person Marlou entertains, there’s a person Marlou disappoints. Kung may nasasayahan, meron din nasasayangan. They say Marlou could’ve changed the game like no one else. Could he have been a 6’9" Alvin Patrimonio? Who knows? He had skills, fan support and charisma. Yet in the final chapters of his career, he’s stuck on the bench thinking, “May kukuha pa kaya sa akin?"
“Kutob ko hindi pa ako tapos," Marlou, who might end up playing for next season’s 10th PBA team, says. “Siyempre as a player, nag-iisip ka din kung papano mo gusto tapusin career mo and sa ngayon may mga gusto pa ako gawin."
Is Marlou more of a professional for clinging on? Is he less of a realist for trying to extend his career? He’s a three-time champion, four-time all-defensive team member and two-time mythical first team member. Yet some still consider him the poster boy for underachievement. Did he underachieve or did we over-expect?
“His lay to claim might be this; that at 6’9", he was the first skilled 6’9" big man the PBA ever saw," Jason Webb, who played alongside Marlou in the PBL and PBA, suggests.
I’m not sure if Marlou suited up for his last PBA game. Like most fans, I wish Marlou retires with MVP awards and a legacy for working harder than anyone else. It won’t happen. Yet Marlou still has a legacy. It’s just not the one people expected him to have.
“I’m proud of my career," Marlou says. “Naka ilang national team din ako. Naka ilang championships din. 15 years! Wala naman akong regrets although sana hindi na lang tumatanda ang player (laughs)." -- GMA News :)

People should realize even if Boss Danding and MVP are passionate about Sports they are still Businessmen and there are things more important than basketball or winning in basketball for that matter.
They are not born Philatropists .... To them, its really all about what are the "RETURNS" they are to get from it.

Part of Marlou Aquino's "downfall" or inability to improve was that he may have already reached his peak by the time he joined the PBA in 1996. Note that while Aquino may have only been 23 years old when he joined the league, he was already a very ripe 23 back then. He was a 4-time PBL Most Valuable Player already, led the Stag Beer team to a couple of championships, played for two South East Asian Games teams that won the gold medal in 1991 and 1995, and was the starting center, despite being an amateur, for the PBA-reinforced team in the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games.
Hence, when he joined the league, he was expected to immediately dominate. And while he may have partly succeeded doing so, being one of the league leaders in points, rebounds, blocks and minutes played, we didn't see a major transformation. Fans expected him to dominate further at his height and talent, but this didn't bear fruit. Which perhaps may have been a case of max'ing out by then....

Or maybe he was secure that no matter if he underachieved or something, teams will still go out of their way to sign him to lucrative contracts due to his height. It is sad that not all players are like Alvin Teng (Jeric's father) who may be limited talent-wise, but you can see undeniably giving his all eveytime he was on the court and improving his game by leaps and bounds compared to when he was an unheralded rookie.

My brother and I were expecting him to duplicate Benjie Paras' achievements in his freshman season. Too bad, that was Alaska's grand slam season.
But come on, he was slacking through out.
At least for Benjie, after his showbiz forays and many injuries, he came back strongly, so strong that he led Shell in the 1999 AFC crown and then winning his second MVP, ironically, after a decade in the league.

With the NBA and its players mired in a bitter labor dispute, basketball superstars have begun looking overseas for opportunities during the lockout.
On Saturday, the idea of the world’s best basketball players competing outside the United States took a step closer to reality after FIBA announced that it was giving clearance for NBA players to sign with overseas teams (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/nba-players-cleared-to-compete-overseas-federation-says) during the lockout.
New Jersey Nets all-star point guard Deron Williams already signed a deal with Turkish team Besiktas, which is also trying to woo NBA superstar Kobe Bryant. And with Bryant and a bunch of other NBA superstars (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/smart-gilas-gives-kobe-and-co-a-good-workout) strutting their wares before SRO crowds in Manila two weeks ago, would it be possible for some of them to find themselves playing professionally in Philippine shores?
Patrick Gregorio, the Talk ‘N Text representative to the PBA Board of Governors, welcomes the idea of NBA players suiting up as imports in Asia’s oldest professional league.
“Think global, basketball is global, so we’re welcoming the idea of having NBA players as imports,” Gregorio told InterAKTV.
Chot Reyes, the head coach of the Tropang Texters, didn’t close the door on the possibility of tapping marquee NBA players, especially if management gets behind the idea. The four-time PBA Coach of the Year was instrumental in putting together the event that brought Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, and other NBA stars to Manila.
“A lot of people thought this is not going to happen and then we made it happen,” said Reyes of the event, dubbed the Ultimate All-Star Weekend.
“So having some of them playing as imports isn’t impossible after all.”
“But having some of these players playing as PBA imports will cost a lot of money, definitely.”
Reyes earlier denied a report (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/paycheck-for-kobe-other-nba-stars-lower-than-cited-by-si-report-chot-reyes) by SI.com, Sports Illustrated’s official website, that Bryant, Durant, and Rose were paid $400,000 each to play in the two-game series in Manila, although he was earlier quoted as saying that the cost of the event was “between expensive and very expensive.”
For other teams that don’t have pockets as deep as Talk ‘N Text, money is the number one issue when it comes to the possibility of bringing in star players from the NBA.
“Hindi natin kaya ‘yan,” said Rain or Shine board representative Mamerto Mondragon when asked about the idea.
Powerade board representative JB Baylon shared similar sentiments.
“I think the issue is not about them playing here, but whether we can afford them or not,” he said.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud said having NBA players as imports would mean revising current league rules.
“We have to change the salary cap rule for imports, and the height limit,” he said.
Currently, reinforcements playing in the league are paid about $14,000 a month, which would be way below the asking price of basketball’s top stars. The league also institutes a height limit on imports to keep the local competitive.
Salud also said that there might not be a consensus among PBA board members about changing the rules to allow NBA stars, as it would put the league’s less wealthy teams at a disadvantage.
“Not all teams would agree on that because of financial matters,” he said.
But while he has his doubts about NBA stars seeing action as imports in the PBA, he’s eager to host another exhibition match featuring the world’s best hoopsters in the Philippines.
“One thing that’s definite: NBA stars playing here is a big hit and we’re more than willing to stage another kind of event in the future,” said Salud.
“Sana maulit ito.”

Thinking about the possibility, it looks great and entertaining.
But it increases the possibility of the PBA really turning into a tournament between teams of the San Miguel Group of Ramon Ang and the Metro Pacific Group of Manny Pangilinan. These groups had all the resources to afford getting the high salaried NBA Players but the other teams might not be open to spend that much and might opt out as they'll not be competitive in the sporting side and if they force the issue it might have a severe effect with their financials.
If MVP is willing to spend that much, it is more prudent that he just continue with the SMART GILAS program, then get NBA quality players as Naturalized Players then have the team travel all around the Globe as a Harlem Globetrotter-like traveling team while promoting the products of Metro Pacific and Philippine Tourism to the Filipino OFWs and Foreigners.

http://www.eurobasket.com/images/leagueslogos/China.gif CBA won't allow active NBA players to sign out-clauses? - Jul 31, 2011 (by Eurobasket News)
Since the NBA lockout started on July 1st, a host of NBA superstars have been considering China as a potential landing spot if the work stoppage drags on past the start of the season. If only China was considering NBA players.
Earlier this afternoon, Sina Sports, quoting an anonymous figure connected to the CBA, reported that the Chinese Basketball Association is planning to institute two special new rules for next season in response to the ever-growing list of NBA players who have declared interest towards playing in China: First, teams will not be allowed to include an out-clause into any contract with an active NBA player and second, that each team will be allowed to sign only one active NBA player.
Said the anonymous source, The CBA isn't the NBA's backyard. If we didnt make a rule about players playing here temporarily, then theyd all just leave in the middle of the season. That would affect our season greatly.
As of yet, the CBA has not responded to the story. Any official announcement over new CBA rules is unlikely to come before the leagues committee convenes for a policy meeting in August.
If the CBA indeed goes ahead with the new rules, then its unlikely that any big stars will come here to play next season. Up to this point, all player interest has been based around signing an out-clause, a stipulation which would allow a player to return immediately to the NBA whenever the lockout ends. Any rule forcing an active NBA player to play a full year in China would essentially kill all interest from players currently under contract.
The CBAs reasoning behind such a rule serves as a stark reminder as to how the Chinese government views basketball within the national political framework. Whereas the NBA operates in the U.S. as an independent business, the CBA is run by the government and thus has an agenda based on other things than profitability. At the top of that agenda for the Chinese is the long-term development of basketball in China and the success of the Chinese national team. Having a national team that can compete against the best the world has to offer serves as a way for China to gain international glory while also boosting nationalism within its own borders. The relationship between raising Chinas international athletic reputation and promoting national pride is a vital interest for the Chinese government, who put a strong emphasis on nationalism as a way to maintain stability.
So although welcoming an NBA superstar to China sounds good on the surface, both for NBA-crazed fans and teams bottom line, the impact on the long-term development of Chinese would be minimal at best. Investing lots of money in players just to see them pack up and leave would not help the CBAs goals in any way. If a player left mid-season to back to the States, teams would be left with few options to replace him, which is a concern that some teams also have.
I think trying to attract superstar players to the league isnt a good thing, said Zhejiang Guangsha general manager, Ye Xiangyu, who was also quoted in the Sina article. Once they leave [back to the NBA], there wont be any players left on the market. That would affect a team across all aspects.
Last year, Guangsha signed former NBA players Javaris Crittenton and Rafer Alston to deals, only to see the both of them leave the team within two weeks of signing.
China is a considered a top destination for players during the lockout. Though the league itself isnt very good from a talent standpoint, the money is typically better than in Europe. But, that is a relatively small incentive for established NBA players who have contracts worth far more than any Chinese team can offer. Chinas biggest advantage over the rest of the world is the size of its basketball market, which is estimated to be between 300 and 400 million people. Signing a deal in China would give a player unprecedented opportunities to sign endorsement deals and engage in other profitable commercial ventures.
But, none of that can happen without first playing in a Chinese stadium. And if this new rule indeed goes through in August, then you can count all of that still just a dream.

Yup. i agree with this. MVP paid his dues for the NT program already. Compared to other sport programs he's supporting-- namely the ABAP (boxing)
and recently the Azkals, those are peanuts relative to his financial commitment to basketball and Gilas.
Now, is it a good investment? That remains to be seen of course and will be judged after the Wuhan Wars.

yeng guiao is extremely good at developing talent...red bull time and again lost key players but was kept competitive thanks to his ability to extract the best out of his wards. not only was he losing key players, he was losing them at their peaks. miller, villanueva, valenzuela, pennisi, tugade, baguio...all of which were traded or released despite playing at all star levels. also, he has gotten the best out of carlo sharma who no one thought would even last this long in the league...same with doug kramer. compare his teams to the san miguels or tnt's...those teams pirate players when they are already developed. coach yeng gets them raw then turns them into stars.

Injured Boosters: Al-Hussaini suffers possible ACL tear, Cabagnot dislocates finger (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/injured-boosters-al-hussaini-suffers-possible-acl-tear-cabagnot-dislocates-finger)

Petron Blaze kept itself in the hunt for the last finals berth in the 2011 PBA Governors’ Cup following a 97-92 win over B-MEG on Wednesday.
But the victory came at a price, after two of the Boosters’ main men — Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Alex Cabagnot – came down with injuries.
The 6-foot-7 Al-Hussaini, the team’s starting center, left the game with 1:05 left in the second period after hurting his knee. Petron Blaze coach Ato Agustin said the team doctor feared that the young slotman from Ateneo had torn the ACL on his right knee.
“Lumuwag daw yung tuhod niya,” said Agustin during the post game interview. “Ang sabi ng doctor naming, malamang ACL, pero they will still examine it.”
Cabagnot, on the other hand, missed the game against B-MEG after dislocating a finger on his left hand.
“Namamaga yung shooting hand nya. Nakuha niya yun nung pagsundot nya sa bola during our previous game,” added Agustin.
Despite the injuries to its key players, Petron Blaze are still determined to go all the way to the final round. They are scheduled to face Talk ‘N Text on Friday in another must win game.
Agustin plans to go back to the game tape of his team’s previous win against the Tropang Texters, who have secured already secured the first finals berth.
“We beat them when we played with an All-Filipino line up. I think mag-iiba yung klase ng laro naming when we go up against them, knowing na kailangang-kailangan namin ng panalo,” he said.

The best news i've heard this conference for Petron. i hope Rabah misses games the rest of the way and Petron advances to the Finals, where they'll stop TNT from their Grand Slam dreams. (Which of course is a very, very tough task :D)-- that way, the management will realize that Petron is a better team WITHOUT Rabah in the line-up (Until the young guy decides he want to play defense)

Air21 likely renamed Barako Bull
By Joaquin Henson The Philippine Star Updated August 07, 2011 12:00 AM 2 comments to this post
MANILA, Philippines - Air21 is expected to take flight when the PBA’s 37th season opens Oct. 2 with the franchise carrying the brand Barako Bull and in a marketing twist, the former Barako Bull team will be known as Shopinas.
Businessman Bert Lina controls two companies that own two separate PBA franchises. Air Freight 2100 recently bought the Barako Bull team and assigned it to a subsidiary Shopinas which is involved in e-commerce or internet trading. Linaheim Holdings owns the Air21 franchise whose governor is Manny Alvarez, a Lina group executive detailed to Waste and Resources Management or WARM.
With the Lina group buying into George Chua’s energy drink business, the speculation is Air21 will be renamed Barako Bull. The Shopinas governor will be Lina’s 29-year-old daughter Sheila, only the league’s second female Board representative since Nikki Coseteng of Mariwasa.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud welcomed the purchase and reactivation of the old Barako Bull franchise which was dormant the last two conferences. “The good news is we’re back to 10 teams,” said Salud.
Lina said Shopinas will maintain a youthful and vibrant look. The target is to keep an average age of 27. A source said team officials are now conducting interviews to recruit a coach. Three PBA assistant coaches were rumored to be in the candidates list. No decision has been made on a coach but an announcement will be definitely made before the Aug. 28 draft.
Meanwhile, if Air21 evolves into Barako Bull, its image will be distinctly macho. The players to fill the roster will fit that mold. The only Air21 players with unexpired contracts are Wynne Arboleda, Leo Najorda, Elmer Espiritu and Carlo Sharma so coach Bong Ramos has the opportunity to almost start from scratch.
“We will not hold a dispersal draft for Shopinas,” said Salud. “There will be no protect eight, nine or 10. We expect Shopinas to request for concessions in the draft and possibly, it may be given the last pick of the first round and the first pick of the second round. As commissioner, I will make sure that both Air21, or whatever it will be called, and Shopinas are competitive. We realize that Shopinas is a new team and it will need some help to build up. If trades come up, we will make sure they are even. In the end, every team is accountable to the public, especially to its fans, in so far as trades or player movements are concerned. The bottom line is trades must be balanced and teams become stronger because of the trades.”
At the moment, a moniker for Shopinas is being carefully thought out. The moniker should reflect the business of the company. A suggestion is to call it something that rhymes with the Clippers, an NBA team from Los Angeles.
Alvarez said Lina’s marching orders are for both teams to be competitive and affirmed that neither team is for sale.
Alvarez said Air21’s 0-8 record in the Governors Cup will serve as a challenge for next season. Air21 made it to the semifinals of the Commissioner’s Cup but lost three in a row to Talk ‘N’ Text. Overall, the team now has a streak of 11 straight losses.
Alvarez attributed the slide to three factors. “First, Dorian (Peña) got injured in the first game of the conference, taking away our post presence,” he explained. “Second, Dondon (Hontiveros) fell into a slump which nobody can blame him for. He was fatigued. Dondon had no rest in between conferences because of his commitment with Smart Gilas. He actually asked us if we could allow him a two week break to take a vacation in the US but the conference was about to start. Like a true pro, Dondon stayed and played. But it took a toll on him. Lastly, our import (Alpha) Bangura didn’t play up to par. It could’ve been his nagging groin injury or that other teams learned how to defend him. We even brought his family over to keep him in town from when the second conference ended.”
Alvarez said Air21 has two first round picks in the coming draft. One is the third overall slot and Alvarez remarked that the team will probably tap the top available talent, regardless of his position. For instance, if Marcio Lassiter and Jvee Casio are picked 1-2, Alvarez said it’s possible Mac Baracael will be the third choice. A big man in Alvarez’ sights is Gilas center Jason Ballesteros.

an average age of 27? hmmm.Do I smell Air21 part II here..

With the move, it puts Miller technically back where he started. Would be interesting to see Pennisi playing for Air21/Barako (to maintian the "returnee" theme), with their apparent front court weakness...in exchange perhaps for a slumping guard who could return to his former team as well? Add Tugade (another potential returnee) to sweeten things up...pardon me friends for being sentimental to players returning to their old teams :).
With management, players, and the team name changing, perhaps a coaching squad shake-up can also be expected? Someone new who can win and has won a championship? If not from the PBA, maybe from another league? Someone who can get things done? To quote the former MMDA chair.....BF gets it done? ;)
Shopinas...envisioned as a young team...young players..."young" coaching staff? Hmmmm..pumaren..racela..ticzon.....compton???

some forumers here or some bgk fans are fooled by uichico's cry "we are too small thats why we are not winning championships but the fact is even if he will have healthy bigs,he dont utilizes them that much.
much like dlsu this past decade...;)

i think BMEG needs Barroca more than Baracael as Mac will just duplicate the 3-4 positions BMEG already have. besides, Roger Yap is on the twilight of his PBA career and the team needs a scoring PG to ease the load from Yap, Simon and Devance.
true they need a solid point guard, im assuming these 3 lassiter, lutz and baracael will go 1,2,3 come draft day, so that leaves ballesteros and barocca...

but lassiter, lutz and baracael might pull out the draft to continue playing with the gilas nationals with the 2 year extension.

Exactly, it's moot to discuss until we see the final list. Hopefully, none is stupid enough to do a Japeth and pullout AFTER they get drafted :D

and we don't want to see the crybabies of air21 :p and the quote from former PBA commish barrios that even in nba they run this system. HELLO ricky rubio just sign recently and was drafted in 2009 :D :p and in the same draft as japeth, james sena was drafted by SMB but was not given a contract. LOLZ. funny at them. :D :p

So in circles we go. Unfortunately for some of these players they really don't have much choice as they will trail where the money goes :D (Good for them, there's now the ABL option so yeah at least they have a career to go to if the PBA doesn't work out for them ;) )

i dont think Lutz will pull out his application, after all he wasnt given much playing time on gilas. same goes for ballesteros and barroca..
Baracael and lassiter might withdraw

Lutz is a part time starter for gilas depends on who they face. he has playing time. and if he didnt withdraw, the salary he'll get in pba will be a rookie contract and its 150k a month compare to the offer of gilas 250k a month.

if he will be a top 1 to 3 pick, he will get P175000/month in his first year, then P250000/month in his second year, and then P375000 in his third year.
