^^ thats why sir he will draft the best talent in the draft that is Paul lee and hopefully Powerade trade their 4th pick in that one as getting potential starters in the persona of Kramer and Vanlangdingham just for giving away good but did not flourish in Perasol system Quinahan..

the 4th pick might be used to pick a Mac Baracael a Guiao type of a player who can be set up to spot up jumpers and fight for offensive boards or Ballesteros

So Guiao's interested in bringing back his Porkchop Duo of Beau Belga and JR Quinahan in his fold. Typical of Guiao to want a big man capable of making the outside shot. I'm surprised though that he's willing to give up Kramer, a player who has flourished in Guiao's system. This won't be the first time, if ever, that Kramer will be traded away by Guiao. When the coach was still handling Air 21, he traded Kramer to Rain Or Shine. This, after Kramer just made a monster 20-20 performance with the Express. And when Guiao started handling ROS, Kramer proved himself again through timely jumpers from the outside and his intensity underneath the boards.

For Guiao to win an AFC title though, he would need the services of a marquee player who can take the lead role at crunch time. I can see ROS winning a title under Guiao in the future, not unlike what he did for Red Bull before. But this would be in an import-laced conference. His partnership with Andy Jao has done wonders before at Red Bull and part of that magic is their ability to get topnotch imports. Of course, their import agent, Sam Unera, has already passed away, but it shouldn't stop this tandem to continue getting imports that will dominate (AZ Reid was a good start for them).

But without a take charge guy in offense, Guiao will find difficulty winning an AFC, especially when ranged against top local teams like Petron, TNT, BGK, Alaska and B-Meg. Gabe Norwood is a fine specimen of a player but he will never be a dominant guy as he's too unselfish. Note that Guiao never won a AFC with Red Bull as his coaching style is for the individual to submit himself to the system - a system of sharing the ball. Which also explains why Red Bull never won a MVP award from its roster - but - their players are also the most marketable.

if thats the case, say goodbye of drafting ballesteros on the draft. i think ballesteros fits with ROS team.

it's almost the whole team.

We might see a new roster for Barako Bull. (like their roster before)

but honestly SMC is too smart. As we all know, Air 21 is like a sister of SMC teams, rather than giving the players of Air 21 to shopinas they gave it to Barako Bull. While the "original players of Barako Bull" will be given to Shopinas. I am just wondering, if the contract of Hubalde, Tugade et al are with the Barako Bull franchise, then why they need to to Shopinas iso to Barako Bull?

i feel bad for Vanlandingham, in short stints i saw him as a player who works hard on both ends of the floor. And with a contending team like ROS, he would have been a key cog in their line-up. Too bad Yeng's rotation at the SG/SF is really loaded.

So what will happen now with ROS' lineup? Let's take a look-see:

C - Belga, Quinahan
PF - Cruz, Ferriols
SF - Rodriguez, Matias, Chan
SG - Buenafe, Jazul, Arana, Ibanes
PG - Tang, Norwood

Yup, they're quite filled in the 2 and 3 spots. Getting Paul Lee would mean Guiao considering placing Norwood at #4 to help Cruz and Ferriols. He won't have any problem with Norwood, as the guy can play the four smaller positions. Lee will now shore up the backcourt with Tang relieving him.

But note that depth at #2 and #3 has never been a problem for Guiao. He has done the same with Red Bull when they had the likes of Tugade, Fonacier, Najorda, Baguio, Valenzuela and Alvarez sharing time. Guiao is very comfortable with this setup of having hybrid players at 2 and 3 - or guys who can play both positions well.

If Guiao gets Lee, then he'll need to strengthen his interior with a big man (something that the draft doesn't have) and another shooter. Baracael can easily supply these two requirements but I doubt if he'll still be available when ROS picks again.

I can't get this:

Shopinas bought Barako Bull
then
Air 21 was renamed to Barako Bull

is Air 21 and Barako Bull same company?

As far as I know Lina owns Air 21 and Shopinas so why didn't he just renamed Air 21 to Shopinas in the 1st place?

Then they will inherit a more competitive line up than the old Barako Bull.

Correct.

More likely question is, why didn't they just change Air21's name to Shopinas and kept Barako Bull (the one they acquired) as is.

They most likely wanted to start from "scratch" with Shopinas, considering it's a new company itself and it's a novelty service which they hope to introduce to the mainstream market.

Why then shed the Air21 name considering it's the flagship brand of the Lina Group? Barako Bull is the company's pioneer venture into consumer goods and perhaps they believe bringing the name back to the PBA will help strengthen the failing brand. Take note as well that Lina's group only owns 51% of Barako; Chua is still a part owner. In fact, it's Chua's son who's head of basketball operations of Barako Bull.

Additional notes:
When the deal was being cooked, a very prominent businessman (also involved in the PBA) was said to have supported on the sidelines, even personally attending the meetings or having representatives involved, as he's a very close friend of Chua from way back their younger years in Binondo.

A former PBA commisioner was also said to have been present when the talks were being made to help finalize the deal, particularly the legal aspects.

They're a formidable team right now.

I remember those days, during their Welcoat Dragon days, it's was such a tragic memory to remember. But they did improve through proper drafting and wise trading, it's something that other teams should emulate instead of initiating lopsided deals.

or it could go like this

C Belga
PF Cruz
SF Norwood
SG Buenafe
PG Lee

Lee could be a shoot first Point Guard, Norwood isnt much of a scorer, so He should play the Point Forward role. More like a poor version of Scottie Pippen, Help Bring the ball down, rebound, asst, and play defense

Meralco, Powerade, Talk ‘N Text complete first D-Day deal

Hours before the 2011 PBA Rookie Draft, Meralco, Powerade, and Talk ‘N Text completed a three-team deal that would have major ramifications on the Sunday afternoon’s event.

Meralco acquired the rights to Talk ‘N Text’s No. 7 overall pick and guard Mark Macapagal from Powerade.

Talk ‘N Text received veteran center Dennis Espino from the Tigers as well as guard Shawn Weinstein from the Bolts.

Powerade received swingman Ogie Menor from the Bolts and the last pick of the second round (No. 21 overall) from the Tropang Texters.

A highly-placed source privy to the discussion broke the news to InterAKTV.

Prior to the deal, Meralco had no picks in this year’s draft. With the No. 7 selection, the Bolts are looking to tap center Jason Ballesteros, a backup big man from the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team. Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio serves as an assistant coach with the Philippine team.

It was the second major transaction for the Tigers in the offseason. On Thursday, Powerade completed a deal to acquire center Doug Kramer and shooter Josh Vanlandingham from Rain or Shine in exchange for JR Quinahan, Norman Gonzales, and a couple of future second round picks.

The team is in the middle of an ambitious build-up, with the Tigers owning two first round draft choices, including the top overall pick.

Trading a proven star in Dondon Hontiveros, a serviceable big man in Carlo Sharma and future star (3rd pick). (any future picks involve? if yes then it will go again to Petron)
for
a poorman version of Dondon - Sunday Salvacion(though during his college days he was supposed to be a future PBA superstar), a past prime Mick Pennisi, and most probably a rotational player (8th pick).

Getting Carlo Sharma is in order for Petron to make sure Rabbeh is happy and they'll have Kuya Carlo to make sure his baby brother takes seriously practices and does not do any tantrums. Good Move by Petron.

Sharma could also be as tough as Pennisi but does not have the 3 point shooting which will not be required from him with Chris Lutz and Dondon Hontiveros now on board.

I noticed this too. It must be the conditioning coach of SMC who is probably not that good.

When Chot became the coach of SMB I think one of the things he focused on was the conditioning of the players particularly on Danny Seigle. Siegle did play well under Chot during that time.

anyway, looks like the Miller to Petron move is already dead as they got Hontiveros back and drafted Lutz from the pool.

I can see the PBA having a banner year this coming season and they owe MVP a million thanks for it. The recent exhibition games against the NBA superstars has a sort of "halo effect", and let the fans realize that our players are not so bad after all. Imagine Castro stealing off cp3, arwind scoring with his fade-away, mercado blowing by past them, aguilar posterizing durant... and the amount of promotions it brought them thru tweets and the tri-media is humongous. To top it all, the Gilas boys impending arrival is somewhat comparable to the 1988 draft when Alvin and company invaded the league. The PBA never looked this good in years. Just one request... please prioritize the NT.:D

PBA oks giant imports, but not salary cap increase
Reynaldo Belen, InterAKTV · Monday, August 29, 2011 · 8:15 pm · Comments (2)

For the second conference of its 37th season, the PBA will not enforce a height limit on imports.

The PBA’s Board of Governors settled on the format of the import conferences of the upcoming season at the league’s annual planning meetin in Hong Kong on Monday. The second conference, the Commissioners’ Cup, will feature imports with unlimited height while the third conference, the Governors’ Cup, will feature a limit of 6-foot-5 for reinforcements.

The last time the PBA allowed reinforcements of unlimited height was in the 2008-2009 Fiesta Conference. Bannered by seven-foot import Chris Alexander, Barangay Ginebra defeated Steve Thomas and Air21 in a record-drawing best-of-seven finals.

A highly-placed source who was present in the league’s board meeting in Hong Kong broke the news to InterAKTV.

The same source also added that there would be no increase in the PBA salary cap, which also meant there would be no increase in the maximum salary of players.

“Teams will still maintain a 32-million salary cap,” said the source.

Last season, the PBA enforced a 6-foot-6 height limit on imports for the Commissioner’s Cup, before implementing a handicapping system for the Governors’ Cup, when the four teams were allowed reinforcements that had a maximum height of 6-foot-2, the next four teams 6-foot-4, and the last team, Powerade, 6-foot-6.

If ever our next NT wishes to play in the PBA as a guest team, will they allow them? any news?

i think that's borderline impossible. First, the NT Pool doesn't have enough players. And when they do start filling them in, around half will be from college (if indeed Gilas 2.0 shall include the likes of Slaughter, Parks, Ravena, etc)

And also, before all the speculations, SBP has to talk to the PBA of this plan as well (which as of now is not even a "plan" just speculations) and talk about it NOW-- for obvious reasons.

actually no, its having an proper dialogue & agreement between PBA and SBP unlike before SBP/PBA would just say their concern over the press rather than meeting half way between the 2 parties.

CEBUANO hotshot Dondon Hontiveros expressed his elation following the recent turn-around of his career.

During last Sunday’s rookie draft, Barako Bulls sent Hontiveros back to SMC franchise team Petron Blaze Boosters together with Carlo Sharma and third pick Chris Lutz for Sunday Salvacion, Mick Pennisi and the eighth pick.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

“Nalipay ko nga gikuha ko nila og balik. I’m happy also to know that I could still help the team (Petron),” Hontiveros told Sun.Star Cebu after the Cebuano heard mass last Sunday night at the Sto. Rosario Church.

SMC consultant Noli Eala, in his tweet, clarified that Petron wanted Hontiveros back and needed a big man in Sharma, while 2011 Rookie of the Year Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Jay Washington are still on the injured list. They also lost Pennissi in the trade.

“Ila na ko gisulti-an before I went home for a vacation. Excited sad ko nga moduwa og balik sa San Miguel,” added the former University of Cebu Webmasters gunner.

Aside from the trade, Petron gave to the Barakos their first round picks in 2014 plus two more future picks.

Hontiveros, who was traded to Air21 (now Barako Bulls) last March together with Danny Seigle, Paul Artadi and Dorian Peña for Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra, will also end his contract with the Bulls on Wednesday.

Barako, on the other hand, had a pretty good reason to do the trade because they wanted to get back former players Pennissi and Salvacion after re-acquiring Willie Miller also from the trade for KG Cañaleta.

“I need to work harder since I’ll be playing with younger guys, especially with Lutz, my teammate with the Gilas.”

Hontiveros also clarified that health problem was why he left Smart Gilas Pilipinas men’s team.

“I played three straight conferences from the Philippine Cup, Commissioner’s Cup and the Governor’s Cup. I also played for the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup and the Jones Cup and that was nine straight games for nine days. Wala’y pahuway. Mao to ako na lang gi-give up ang Gilas. Usa pod dili pod ko ganahan mokuyog sa Qatar,” Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros arrived in Cebu last Saturday and was at the Shangrila-Mactan all day last Sunday. He did some wall climbing at Club Ultima yesterday.

New PBA rule that will have a major impact-- not immediately though.

PBA to allow true free agency for players after six years
InterAKTV · Tuesday, August 30, 2011 · 5:36 pm · Comments (0)

The Philippine Basketball Association has approved a proposal allowing players with six playing years under their belt to choose their teams in free agency. But a member of the league’s Board of Governors told InterAKTV that the new rule will only apply to players drafted this season onwards.

PBA commissioner Chito Salud announced the new policy on Tuesday after a planning meeting with the board.

“After six years the players automatically become unrestricted free agents, with the right to negotiate with any team that wants their services,” said Salud.

Previously, the league gave a right of first refusal to each team when it comes to players whose contracts have expired. The teams were allowed to match any offer from other squads to their stars.

The right of first refusal rule had allowed players to keep its superstars away rivals, with the most popular case being that of Alvin Patrimonio, who signed a P25-million offer sheet with Pepsi in 1991, which his team Purefoods ended up matching.

honestly i'm still more excited about the all filipino conference than the unlimited height reinforced one. imports nowadays kasi are just mercenaries...gone are the billy ray bates, norman black, bobby parks, sean chambers who genuinely loved playing here in the country. i'm hoping anthony grundy would be that guy coz i felt he really loved his stint here even if he was just a replacement.

i doubt they get him though during Unlimited Height conference (Governor's nga ba?) after all TNT could get a Douhtit himself :D The other conference-- 6'5" and below, we can expect Grundy but then again, lots of other imports taller-- and better-- than him will be available.

As for the "mercenaries" tag-- they were mercenaries then, they are still mercenaries now. Doesn't mean i don't like them less or more.

National Press Club Statement on Snow Badua-Noli Eala Incident

NATIONAL PRESS CLUB OF THE PHILIPPINES
No. 1 Magallanes Drive, Intramuros, Manila
+632-3010521 to 22

August 31, 2011 Press Statement of NPC President Jerry S. Yap

‘NOLI ME EALA’

“NOLI ME EALA” is now being coined by the National Press Club of the Philippines as a new way of filibustering against public figures similarly minded as former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Mr. Noli Eala, now being accused of harassing a sportscaster.

Literally, it means: “Don’t do to me what Mr. Noli Eala did to a journalist!”

It is indeed quite revolting for sports figures to harass sports writers or sportscasters, who, despite the unrewarding work these journalists do for the sports, they remain happy to stay on the sidelines to watch the show of persons of interest to the public and make reports about them.

This as the Club reminds Mr. Noli Eala that he should be a man of law for being a lawyer although sanctioned by the Supreme Court for a morality issue. He should have known how important is the liberty of the press to the society, the country and the people in general; and to the basketball and other sports in particular.

The NPC knows that Mr. Noli Eala cannot imagine a basketball championship without reporters or sports writers or television crewmen. He certainly knows that without sports columnists and sports feature writers, basketball and other popular sports could have never been so storied to become legends in the eyes of the Filipinos watching on the sidelines, boob tubes or internet, Filipinos who coincidentally compose the biggest chunk of product consumers to give motives for the corporations to sponsor teams and events.

San Miguel Beer, Purefoods, Smart, Red Bull, etc can never be popular as they are now without the interesting stories written by sports journalists who normally are happy enough to come out of the woodwork just to piece together into interesting myths all events in basketball and other sports.

The NPC was saddened to read the complaint of Mr. Edmund “Snow” Badua, the main anchor of Teledyaryo Sports of NBN 4, in his August 25, 2011 letter addressed to Mr. Ramon S. Ang, president and chief operating officer of San Miguel Corporation.

The NPC has sufficient reason not to doubt the assertions of Mr. Badua because he staked his reputation, integrity and credibility when he brought to the attention of SMC’s bigwig what he insisted was the act of harassment done on him by Mr. Eala at the time the sportscaster attended the post-championship celebration of Petron Blaze Boosters in Mandaluyong.

Mr. Badua said that Mr. Eala told him this: “Hindi ko nagugustuhan mga pinagsusulat mo ah. Gusto mo ng proof na talagang taga-SMC ako? Tara usap tayo sa likod ng stage.”

In continuation, Mr. Badua said in his letter:

“With his hand firmly holding mine as if I was a criminal who had just been arrested, I was literally dragged into the backstage. There, Mr. Eala inexplicably started uttering profanities and making threats on my person.

“Mr. Eala repeatedly told me that he didn’t like the things I have been writing about him, particularly the ones insinuating that he is not employed by SMC or associated with the corporation. I instantly replied, ‘Bakit ikaw ba ang tinutukoy ko? Pinangalanan ba kita?’ Raising his voice, Mr. Eala countered: ‘Bakit kailangan mo pa ba akong pangalanan para malaman kong ako yun? Kung mumurahin ba kita ng putangina mo sa Twitter nang hindi kita binabanggit, ibig sabihin hindi na ikaw yun?’

“I answered him back saying: ‘Teka muna, bakit ka nagmumura. At kung ikaw man yun bakit kailangan mo kong i-corner dito? Bakit kailangan mo kong i-confront dito sa backstage na walang tao. Media harassment iyan. Andito ko para mag cover ng event ng San Miguel. Inimbita ko para mag cover, hindi para makipag-debate o makipag-away sa iyo.’

“To which he uttered, ‘Hindi naman ako makikipag debate sa iyo, eh. Bibigyan kita ng leksyon. Patutunayan ko sa iyo na taga rito ako. At dito ako sa SMC nagta-trabaho!’

“Without my knowledge, Mr. Eala deployed two (2) of his cohorts along the area and before I could walk away to prevent the situation from boiling over, one of them approached me and violently pushed me. This guy, who was later identified to me as Rico Meneses, shouted at me and said: ‘Bakit mo sinisigawan si COMM? Bakit mo siya inaaway?’

“To which I replied: ‘Ha? Ako pa ang mang-aaway? Nagpapaliwanag lang ako. Kaya nga papaalis na ko at bakit parang pinagtutulungan niyo na ako?’

“It was at this juncture that another cohort of Mr. Eala barged into picture and threatened me by saying: ‘Teka muna, huwag ka munang umalis. Di ba sabi ko sa iyo makikita mo rito ang hinahanap mo kapag nagpunta ka? Ang yabang mo ah. Wala ka pala, eh. Gusto mo bang Makita ang hinahanap mo rito?’”

Indeed, NOLI ME EALA!

First, an off court collision involving him and HOMER SE during the Air21 and Talk n' Text eliminations game.

Second, he was again caught in a near fight against Ginebra's pair of Chris Alexander and Alex Crisano.

Third ofcourse, was the brawl between him and the whole PF's squad.

Alaska, Tim Cone parting ways Thursday?

By Beth Celis (http://sports.inquirer.net/byline/beth-celis)
Philippine Daily Inquirer (http://sports.inquirer.net/source/philippine-daily-inquirer) 7:54 pm | Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

HONG KONG— With a 20 percent increase in revenues from P75 million in the 2009-2010 season to P90 million this year under his watch, the PBA board decided to reward PBA commissioner Chito Salud with a one-year tenure extension.

Unlike the practice in previous years, Salud chose to have his contract renewed every year, “because that’s what’s written in the league’s constitution and by-laws (http://sports.inquirer.net/14179/alaska-tim-cone-parting-ways-thursday#),” he said Tuesday over breakfast at the Holiday Inn here.

“When I was appointed last year, the board offered me a three-year contract, but I said we have to follow what’s in the by-laws,” Chito said.

* * *

The PBA board’s annual planning session started shortly after the delegation’s arrival here. This first session under new league chair and Rain or Shine governor Mamerto Mondragon lasted four hours.

Chito said the board also decided to raise the minimum salary of a rookie from P30,000 to P50,000 monthly, starting this season.

* * *

Absent during the nine-course dinner hosted by Smart-PLDT chair Manny V. Pangilinan that same night was Alaska governor Joaqui Trillo. Some of his fellow governors kidded that he might have passed up the dinner for a trip to nearby Macau.

Truth is, Joaqui was in his hotel room nursing (http://sports.inquirer.net/14179/alaska-tim-cone-parting-ways-thursday#) a bad cold that rendered him practically deaf during the flight from Manila.

“My ears were hurting all throughout the flight,” Joaqui said over lunch before last Monday’s meeting. “And then somewhere along the way, I heard something pop inside my head and I went deaf.

“For a moment I thought I had a stroke. My hearing later returned.”

* * *

The next morning, I told Joaqui that he missed the P6,000-per-plate dinner the previous night. Joaqui said he had wanted to go but he was so dizzy from all the medicines he had taken.

He said his hearing had cleared, but his cold was still so bad he might have to pass up that evening’s dinner, hosted this time by Coca-Cola’s JB Baylon.

Baylon informed us earlier that he had only five players left with live contracts and that he was not likely to retain the services of the players whose contracts had expired.

The five players with live contract are Sean Anthony, Gary David, Dennis Espino, Jai Reyes and Jay-R Reyes.

JB later told us that he has signed up Fil-Am Alex Crisano and that Coke governor Kenneth Duremdes is suiting up this season.

* * *

Joaqui is scheduled to fly back to Manila Wednesday afternoon to catch the 2 p.m. press conference set by Alaska owner Fred Uytengsu in Makati today.

Uytengsu is expected to announce the retirement of head coach Tim Cone, who gave the franchise a Grand Slam and several championships.

“Coaching fatigue. He wanted to do something different,” said a governor who also informed us that Tim’s assistant, Joel Banal, will replace Cone.

Cone’s no-show at rookie briefing fans rumors he’s leaving Alaska (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/sports/15880-cones-no-show-at-rookie-briefing-fans-rumors-hes-leaving-alaska)

http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/images/stories/daily_images/2011/September/09012011/sports02.jpg

IS Tim Cone leaving Alaska after more than 20 years of fruitful partnership?

Rumors are swirling that Cone, the longest-serving coach in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), has decided to part ways with the Wilfred Uytengsu franchise for reasons still unknown because the American mentor has been quiet the past few days.

In fact, the Alaska camp is holding an emergency press conference on Thursday in Makati City. Details of the event have been kept under wraps.

During the meeting of the PBA Board of Governors in Hong Kong on Tuesday, Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo denied that Cone is leaving the Aces and that he was expecting Cone to lead the briefing of their rookies at the Reyes Gym.

Cone was a no-show and only his assistants presided over the briefing of rookies Eric Salamat, Julius Pasculado and Ariel Mepana.

Cone’s contract with the Aces expires in 2013 yet, that is why the Alaska camp was reportedly caught by surprise of his reported transfer.

Team owner Uytengsu, the BusinessMirror learned, was stunned after Cone reportedly wanted to be released from the Aces camp.

Cone is reportedly being wooed by San Miguel Corp. brass to handle B-MEG, although Richard del Rosario was recently named as interim head coach.

The BusinessMirror further learned Uytengsu and Cone will meet on Thursday morning—or before the press conference, which is scheduled at 2 p.m.

Cone joined the Uytengsu franchise in 1989 and steered the team to 13 titles, including a rare grand slam in 1996. His title victories rank second to legendary mentor Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan’s 15 championships.

Meanwhile, the considerable gains attained by the PBA last year has made the new chairman, Mamerto Mondragon of Rain or Shine, optimistic about the league’s new calendar that kicks off on October 2 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mondragon is confident the coming season could match, if not surpass, the P90-million gross receipts posted by his predecessor, Rene Pardo of B-Meg.

“It’s attainable,” said Mondragon. The soft-spoken Rain or Shine brass said the support of the governors and Commissioner Chito Salud makes him confident.

MANILA, Philippines — Will coach Tim Cone stay with Alaska?

The question is expected to be answered Thursday as rumors continued to circulate with hurricane velocity that the current longest tenured coach in the PBA will be leaving the Aces after 22 years and 13 championships, including one grand slam.

Sources said Cone wants to be released because he has been dissatisfied with the state of basketball affairs in the Alaska franchise, in particular, the lack of efforts on the part of management to strengthen the lineup in the midst of the continued buildup of the other PBA teams.

Alaska will hold a press conference Thursday either to confirm the rumors or state that Cone will stay on as coach.

But the rumors were so powerful, it reververated in Hong Kong where the PBA board of governors was meeting and prompting the immediate order for Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo to return to Manila.

“The main reason why coach Tim wants to leave the team is that some of his key players like Joe (Devance) had been traded, and few years from now his marquee players may follow,” said a source who requested not to be identified.

“Knowing coach Tim, he wants to have a competitive line-up,” the same source said.

Point guard LA Tenorio, shooting guard Cyrus Baguio and center Sonny Thoss were reported to have become agitated following the departure of Devance and were rumored to be asking to be traded.

The source added that while teams like newly-crowned Governors’ Cup champion Petron Blaze, Barangay Ginebra B-Meg of San Miguel Corp. (SMC), as well as Talk ’N Text and Meralco of Manny V. Pangilinan have been able to strengthen their rosters through trades, Alaska has not done anything similar.

“Imagine that SMC and Pangilinan’s teams can’t make trades straight up, there has to be a third party. But they are finding ways to solidify their teams,” said the source.

Should Cone depart, that would signal the end of one of the longest owner-coach relationships in the PBA, a relationship that dates back over two decades.

“They are very good friends,” said Trillo who confessd that he had no idea what will happen next.

Team owner Fred Uytengsu Jr. will hold a press conference Thursday where it was gathered he will make an important announcement.

Cone still has a live contract, and it will expire at the end of 2013 Season.

“I think he asked for his release,” said a source Wednesday who asked not to be named since he’s not authorized to discuss the sensitive issue. “But what we know, as far as management is concerned, he’s still has two years.”

The Bulletin tried to contact Cone but calls and even text messages were not answered.

However, Trillo confirmed that Cone will attend the press conference.

“Who knows?” he said. “Even the new coach might be there.”

The last time Cone met his coaching staff and Trillo was during last Sunday’s PBA Rookie Draft, where the Aces selected Smart-Gilas standout Mac Baracael with the No. 6 overall pick, while adding Eric Salamat, Julius Paculado and Ariel Mepana in the second round.

The rookies are expected to join the team’s practice session Wednesday afternoon at the Reyes Gym in Manduyong.

According to sources, Cone and Uytengsu met recently, and the former has asked for his release from the team he guided to 13 PBA championships, the last of which was during the 2010 Fiesta Cup against San Miguel Beer.

Franz to weave "Green Magic" at Shopinas.com

By BRIAN YALUNG
August 31, 2011, 11:24pm

MANILA, Philippines – His last name is no stranger when it comes to competitive basketball and Franz Pumaren hopes to bring his magic in the PBA with the Shopinas.com Clickers come October 2.

Franz has proven his coaching prowess. Among the biggest accomplishments he has under his belt include that of giving the De La Salle University Green Archers multiple UAAP championships during his prime.

Pumaren, a many time member of the PH national team back in the Ron Jacobs era, takes a new step as far as his coaching career is concerned by returning to the PBA not as a player but as the designated head coach for PBA newcomer Shopinas.com. Shopinas.com took over the old Barako Bull franchise.

Franz has been given a three-year contract as well as the free hand to choose the players that will make up the team. This early, indications are that Pumaren is looking at his former players to make up the team, he hopes to build around shooter Renren Ritualo.

A former Archer himself and a many time member of the championship teams of San Miguel Beer, Pumaren has already chosen his coaching staff, familiar faces that have been with him in his past coaching jobs. They are Jack Santiago, Tonichi Yturri and Cholo Villanueva.

To refresh your memory on Franz’ success, he guided the DLSU Archers to four straight championships since he took over the coaching chores in 1998 and another one in 2007. Pumaren likewise helped DLSU win the title in 2004 but the discovery of ineligible players forced the Green Archers to surrender the crown to FEU.

Among the familiar players who have played for him at DLSU include Mike Cortez and Willy Wilson (Ginebra), Joseph Yeo and Carlo Sharma (Petron), Mac Cardona (Meralco), JV Casio (Powerade), TY Tang and Ryan Arana (Rain or Shine), Rico Maierhofer and Jerwin Gaco (B-Meg).

Though unofficial, the Shopinas.com coaching staff reportedly extended an invitation to certain players. During their practice yesterday, only the following were in attendance: Mark Andaya, Mark Canlas, Marvin Cruz, Mark Cagoco, Dennis Daa, Chad Alonzo, Ogie Menor, Bam Gamalinda, Khasim Mirza, Paolo Hubalde, Jojo Duncil, RJ Jazul, Gio Ciriacruz, Angel Raymundo, Magi Sison, Pong Escobal, JR Aquino and Hiram Bagatsing.

Though it wasn’t mentioned, Pumaren revealed that there were still more players invited who didn’t attend, including Ritualo. Chances are these included some former Archers like Adonis Sta. Maria, Manny Ramos, Mike Gavino, Mac Cuan, and Junjun Cabatu.

If you look at the attendance, their first pick Mark Barocca was not included in the list. It seems that Barocca is now with B-Meg for a player that has not yet been officially made.

So officially, Shopinas.com will have only Sison and Cagoco as their official rookies unless Franz picks one up from the rookie free agents who will not be signed up by other PBA teams.

Franz is no stranger to pressure and has been known to be a great motivator to his players. He has proven this during his UAAP stint, particularly in 2007 when they surprised the highly favored Ateneo Blue Eagles for the UAAP crown.

The question is, can he still do it again in the PBA with the Shopinas.com Clickers? Apparently young Shopinas.com Sheila and Bertha Lina believe so.

With former LaSallians backing up a multi-titled DLSU champion coach, it may not be surprising to see a team made mostly of green-blooded LaSallians once Shopinas.com makes it official debut on October 2.

Looks like my hunch may be correct...I posted on here a couple of days ago replying to a tweet from snow badua about a well known coach leaving a club...and Tim Cone was my number one guess...and I'm gonna say now that he's going over to one of the SMC teams..strong guess would be Ginebra. You heard it here first folks. :D

Tigers upbeat on coming PBA season

By Joaquin Henson (http://www.philstar.com/ArticleListByAuthorname.aspx?AuthorName=By%20Joaqu in%20Henson) The Philippine Star Updated September 01, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Powerade coach Bo Perasol said yesterday he’s putting the final touches to the Tigers’ lineup for the PBA season starting Oct. 2 and the emerging cast looks like a championship contender in the making.

“We’re planning to use a 12-man rotation,” said Perasol. “We’ll be tendering offer sheets to our three draft picks (Jvee Casio, Marcio Lassiter, Marc Agustin) within five working days from Sunday as required by the PBA. I’ve always told management that whatever happens, I’m accountable for our performance. In the past, we had our limitations. But now, I’m confident in what we can do. I think we’ve got the manpower, particularly in the backcourt and wing positions, to be able to match up with any team in the league. Hindi na kami lugi kasi mayroon ng pambato ang Powerade.”

In last Sunday’s draft, Powerade chose Casio as the first overall pick and nabbed Lassiter with the fourth. Agustin came in the second round. Gone from last year’s lineup are Mark Macapagal and Chico Lanete (both to Meralco), J. R. Quinahan and Norman Gonzales (both to Rain Or Shine) and Eddie Laure. Rob Reyes isn’t likely to return from the US but Powerade still holds his rights. Francis Allera, Ricky Calimag and R. J. Rizada may play in Powerade’s ambassadors squad that travels around the country to appear in goodwill exhibitions. Dennis Espino is on call and may be reactivated to formalize his retirement in the same way that Kenneth Duremdes will suit up in the Philippine Cup.

Aside from the rookie picks, Perasol said the team will feature other new faces. Alex Crisano, Doug Kramer, Josh Vanlandingham and possibly, Rudy Lingganay will be in the Tigers’ rotation. Perasol said he’s still in the hunt for two big men to complete the roster. The holdovers are Gary David, Will Antonio, Sean Anthony, Celino Cruz and Jai Reyes.

“We’re very excited about the coming season,” said Perasol. “We’re going to be a running team. That’s because of the individual tendencies of our players like Gary, Javee and Marcio. But to be able to run, we’ve got to secure the rebounds. In case we don’t get the opportunity to run, I think we’ll be fine executing in the half-court because of our shooters. I know we can’t be strong in all positions but we made it a point to strengthen our backcourt and wings. We’re figuring that in the second and third conferences, we’ll be recruiting big imports so we decided to focus on our backcourt and wings. Still, it’s not as if we’re ignoring our bigs. Will, Alex and Doug will do their share up front.”

Perasol called for Powerade’s first practice at the Moro Lorenzo Gym yesterday morning. Casio and Lassiter showed up but were excused from playing. Agustin also attended.

“Jvee and Marcio will be leaving next Wednesday for China and they’ll be with us for practice until the day before,” said Perasol. “We want to familiarize them with our offensive and defensive systems and get to know their teammates. We don’t want to risk any injury since they’ll be playing in China so they won’t be suiting up at practice. We’ve told Jvee and Marcio it’s not by accident that they’re with our team. We planned it that way. Mr. (J. B.) Baylon and I went to Taiwan to look at the Gilas players closely during the Jones Cup. We knew Paul Lee was also available but we chose Jvee as our first overall pick. And we chose Marcio because of his ability to play the wing.”

Perasol said Vanlandingham is arriving from the US today and he expects the team to be complete at practice tomorrow.

Crisano’s enlistment wasn’t a spur of the moment decision. Assistant coach Alex Compton had asked Perasol if Crisano could try out for a spot over a month ago.

“There’s no question what Alex can do,” said Perasol, referring to the 6-7 center. “For a month, he worked out with our strength and conditioning coach Julius Veloso. We told him to get in shape for a month without pay. We spoke to him, stressing that this is his last chance to play in the PBA, that it’s not about him but at Powerade, it’s about the team. Alex claims he’s a new man and the past is past. I believe in what he can do. Alex is big, can score, rebound and defend. It’s really all up to him whether he can fit in our system. We’re taking that chance.”

Perasol said over 30 players reported for a four-day camp that Powerade ran for prospective rookies and free agents before the draft. Lingganay, Crisano, Jun-Jun Cabatu, Lee and Ken Acibar came to show their wares. Lingganay, an undrafted guard from UE, was impressive and caught Perasol’s attention. The ABL veteran will be offered a contract as a free agent.

Yes .... Tim Cone will be leaving Alaska.

from what I heard he was indeed sought by the SMC Group but the original plan was for him to take-over Petron but when the depleted team scored an upset win over the Grand Slam seeking Talk N Text, Ato Agustin was able to secure his Head Coach position.

But don't be surprised that the MVP Group enters the picture and be able to snag Cone from the Uytengsu Franchise.

There are talks the contract of Rajko Toroman is no longer to be extended and that Tim Cone would be joining Chot Reyes, Ryan Gregorio and Norman Black as among coaches to be considered by MVP to take over the Gilas Program. But this is just pure speculation not news :p

Problem is that such a move further intensifies the war between the 2 Groups. And this could make Uytengsu more alienated and no longer comfortable in the PBA, so dont be surprised if Joel Banal fails to keep Alaska at par or better than the teams of MVP and SMC groups that we'll see the Uytengsu Franchise finally say adieu.

If Tim Cone goes to the MVP stable, then one thing's for sure: MVP has the best coaches in the land. Having Cone, Reyes and Black, three former national team coaches, would mean securing the best minds in Philippine basketball. Add Ryan Gregorio's "motivational" approach and the improving Boyet Fernandez and I won't be surprised to see how formidable MVP teams would remain to be in the future.

SMB has Uichico, Agustin, Tanquincen, Del Rosario, Gallent, Abenilla, Koy Banal, etc. in their stable. Except for Uichico, no one in that group can match the records of Black, Cone and Reyes. Among those in the list, only Uichico and Tanquincen can be credited for being Ron Jacobs' understudies - the rest having learned from other mentors. Of course, the SMB group also has Bobby Parks and Alton Lister in their fold. Wonder if they'll get the services of Rajko Toroman with Noli Eala now in the SMC wing.

The remaining coaches not with this group are the Pumarens (Pilo, Derrick, Franz and Dindo), Leo Austria and Yeng Guiao. Guiao will never be part of the SMC Group, so it may be logical later on for MVP to consider Guiao to be included in their stable. The Pumarens' roots may be traced to Danding Cojuangco - all of whom were once upon a time part of the Cojuangco team. But there has been a falling out already. Derrick and Franz were also once part of the MVP stable although I don't know their current relationship at this time. Junel Baculi and Bong Ramos were also once part of the NCC Group of Danding Cojuangco although that was for a very short period.

The alignment of forces makes for very interesting times, indeed. My personal belief is that Tim Cone would be more comfortable joining the MVP Group because of his association with Reyes and his respectful relationship with Black and Gregorio. To link with the SMC Group, at least for him, is like "sleeping with the enemy" as Cone has frequently scorned the SMC Group for dozens of reasons. If MVP wants a clear cut program for SMART-Gilas, then having Cone and Black around to possibly replace Toroman (assuming he's unsigned) may be the best options we'll have for our national team.

Hmm I do like to see a Tim Cone and Norman Black collaboration in the National Team with Ryan Gregorio as one of the Assistants and Chot Reyes as the International Scout. If they could just have Eric Altamirano concentrate in the grassroots and discover new young talents around the country, it could be a much better program.

if the boss thinks his manager is not working within his expectation, he has the right to discontinue his services.

As mentioned in the other thread there might be reasons which we do not know and are key factors which would sway the management to such a decision. Why continue with the services of the driver who's not up to your expectation when you have alternatives.

A VERY BIG POSSIBILITY!!!

First off, it says there "moving markets".. it means it is a totally different atmosphere/society.. if the coach will move to just another team in the PBA, he will not move markets.. the PBA and the UAAP are different markets!!!

secondly, it is indeed very possible for the simple fact that Norman Black did it as well.. from the PRO ranks to the College level..

thirdly, De La Salle will not get a coach who is NOT a Lassalian.. Jong Uichico PLAYED for La Salle..

Jay P. Mercado
09-01-2011, 06:02 AM
Which also goes to prove one thing - that Joseph "Jong" Uichico is really a Danding Cojuangco boy, not a Ramon Ang guy.

Uichico being "eased out" of Ginebra is uncanny since among all the coaches, he has served the company the longest. His contemporaries include Hector Calma (now Petron team manager), Samboy Lim (now Ginebra team manager) and Allan Caidic (now Ginebra asst. team manager). Siot Tanquincen is also close to the Cojuangcos but it's because of his relationship with Ron Jacobs. Uichico is close to Danding because of his NCC pedigree - so you know he's valued by the Big Bossman.

Here's the thing - with Ang now running the state of corporate affairs at San Miguel and Danding being the ceremonial leader as the Chairman, Cojuangco has more time in his hands. We all know that Danding recently announced his support to the La Salle basketball community - a major sign that he'll be going up against MVP and Ateneo in the UAAP wars. We all know Dindo Pumaren is the present coach of DLSU. And that Pumaren is not part of the Cojuangco stable. So, with DLSU's floundering UAAP performance this season, expect Dindo to be removed and a Cojuangco boy coming into the scene.

Enter Jong Uichico...

oh yeah sir nardy, kinda forgot that.. so he had experiences being a coach and player of la salle, which boosts the rumor of him taking over, especially now that Dindo Pumaren hasn't really proven himself even way back in the UE days..

End of an era: The PBA won’t be the same without Tim Cone in Alaska
Rafe Bartholomew, special to InterAKTV · Thursday, September 1, 2011 · 2:50 pm · Comments (0)

Tim Cone is leaving Alaska after 22 years. InterAKTV/Markku Seguerra
“At some point, we’re not gonna be able to compete,” Tim Cone told me. “I don’t know what to do.”

This was less than a month ago. He was about to drop me off at the 7-Eleven on Katipunan Avenue, and just before I got out of the car, he mentioned Alaska’s troubles. I understood his concern – since 2007, when I followed the Aces’ run to the Fiesta Conference championship, I watched as talent was stripped away from the team, one trade and one player at a time. At the same time, though, Cone’s worries didn’t strike me as anything out of the ordinary.

Since I first interviewed him in 2007, and in nearly every conversation we’ve had since then, Cone has mentioned how hard it is for Alaska to acquire, develop and retain elite players when rival PBA teams are known to offer bigger salaries and higher bonuses .

Of course, he was just blowing off steam. Besides, whenever Cone seemed most frustrated with the PBA’s state of affairs, Alaska would turn around and win another championship, like they did in 2007 with Rosell Ellis and again in 2010 with Diamon Simpson. Complaining just seemed like the way PBA stakeholders – players, owners, coaches and fans alike – managed stress. So that night in August, when Cone said he was uncertain about his future with Alaska, I took his words with a grain of salt.

Well, apparently, this time it was for real. Listening to the PBA rumor mill can be risky – you might hear that Bonel Balingit is considering a comeback, but only if he can make 500,000 pesos a month, or that Joey Mente is playing as an import in Masbate intercolor leagues – but in this case, most league insiders believe that Cone will eventually return to coaching, and that when he does it will be with one of the PBA’s free-spending juggernauts.

The sight of Cone, a steadfast partner in Fred Uytengsu’s PBA integrity crusade, storming up and down the coaches’ box wearing one of those matching-matching B-Meg polo shirts, will seem bizarre and maybe even perverse to some longtime Alaska fans, but that day may soon be upon us.

The coaching traits that make Cone great aren’t that different from the attributes that have made other PBA greats successful. Cone is as competitive as they come, and as legend has it, he’s also a born coach. Alaska’s wise old sage, team referee and stat-keeper “Mang Tom” Urbano, says he refereed the teen-aged Cone back in the ’70s, when he played varsity basketball for International School Manila. Even then, Cone ran the team like a coach.

And if you don’t want to buy into the myth, just watch one of Cone’s practices. The way he teaches the game – not just the triangle offense, but rebounding, defensive rotations, schemes tailored to get the ball out of Arwind Santos’s hands or make Kelly Williams shoot from certain spots on the floor – is so rich with thought, details and the hours of video and years of experience it takes to become a great coach.

A version of that paragraph could be written for every coach from Baby Dalupan to Ron Jacobs to Sonny Jaworski to Norman Black to Chot Reyes. All have been – in their own ways – brilliant tacticians, fearsome or inspiring motivators, and tireless game-planners. But a few things make Cone unlike the rest.

And while every great head coach is a student of the game, it’s hard to imagine many of them studying it to the extent that Cone has. The legend of Cone intercepting Chicago Bulls broadcasts meant for transmission to the U.S. bases in Clark and Subic with a giant set of bunny-ear television antennae, then charting their offensive patterns and teaching them to his Alaska players before any of them knew it was called the Triangle Offense sounds like a scene out a hoops-inspired sequel to A Beautiful Mind. One of Cone’s proudest moments as a coach, he once told me, was when Hall-of-Fame coach and Triangle inventor Tex Winter came to the Philippines, visited an Alaska practice, and told Cone that the Aces were running the offense at a more sophisticated level than the Los Angeles Lakers were at that time.

In a league where players – especially imports – are often treated as expendable, Cone set himself apart with his loyalty to his charges. With imports, Cone believed it was his duty to find a way to highlight a reinforcement’s talents and use him to win games. Partly because swapping imports is risky with an offense like the Triangle, but also because Cone hated the idea of taking the easy way out and replacing an import who wasn’t a prolific scorer, Alaska rarely sent an import home before the end of a conference.

And that led to Alaska’s (and Cone’s) relationship with Sean Chambers, the Aces’ resident import throughout the 1990s. Chambers, a barrel-chested power forward who stood only 6-foot-1, was anything but a typical import. He wasn’t a natural scorer, but he would defend any position for Alaska and had a dozen different ways to finish under the basket. Cone’s belief in his unconventional import helped Chambers become the most successful import of the 1990s, picking up where Bobby Parks left off.

That same loyalty fostered deep trust between Cone and local stars like Jojo Lastimosa, Johnny Abarrientos and Jeffrey Cariaso. The coach’s relationships with this trio of legendary guards were greater than coach-player, and they had the same ups and downs as real-life friendships and partnerships. Cone always smiled when he recalled that every time he and Jolas had a locker room screaming match during the finals, Alaska won. Cone built enough trust and respect with his players that they felt comfortable telling him when they thought he was full of crap, and his teams had better chemistry for it.

Nothing about Cone’s career was more unique, however, than his relationship with the Alaska Milk Corporation and boss Fred Uytengsu. The two were real-life friends before they were employee and employer, and this allowed them to create a franchise identity unlike any other in the PBA. Uytengsu wanted Alaska’s basketball team to represent the wholesome, family values that he wanted fans to associate with the company’s milk products. Cone was the man who turned that vision into a championship basketball strategy.

In the early 1990s, that meant cracking the whip on old-timers like Yoyoy Villamin and Ricky Relosa who were used to arriving at practice on Filipino time. In the last decade it meant staying under the salary cap yet still finding ways to beat teams whose lineups seemed to earn twice as much. Regardless of the generation, Uytengsu and Cone shared the same goal, the same vision for Alaska: to win with integrity.

It sounds a bit holier than thou, but for 22 years, Cone and Uytengsu walked the talk. That moral stand didn’t just sound good in interviews; it helped lead to 13 titles in 22 years, more than any other team in that span.

And now it’s over. Cone will coach again, and Alaska will try to find a way to compete without him in a PBA that’s looking more than ever like a league of haves and have-nots. But no franchise may ever mesh as well with its coach as Alaska did with Cone, and the PBA will surely miss their collaboration.

oh yeah sir nardy, kinda forgot that.. so he had experiences being a coach and player of la salle, which boosts the rumor of him taking over, especially now that Dindo Pumaren hasn't really proven himself even way back in the UE days..

I have defend my friend .... with a group of unknown transferees and benchwarmers he inherited, Dindo had made UE a consistent contender during his stint with the Red Warriors, its just unfortunate after sweeping the elimination round where they won with an average winning margin of above 16 points., UE became rusty and were not the same after waiting for the long step-ladder elimination to determine the team they'll face in the Finals. The Red Warriors ultimately lost to the De La Salle Green Archers in their best-of-three Finals series. They were beaten by the Green Archers, 2-0.

On his stint in La Salle, I am also buffled on the way he changed his coaching system from before. But I would say it again, it would be difficult for an outsider appointed as Head Coach to succeed if he has no say who are his coaching staff will be and more so if the staff given to him were the senior staff of the previous head coach who he had by-passed. Those who are more observant on what's happening in the sidelines would know what I am talking about.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens.

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up.

A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance.

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time for undoing and a time for stitching; a time for keeping quiet and a time for talk;

A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace.

If i were San Miguel i would consider bringing Topex Robinson to their group. I dont know if he is still with Alaska. But the guy is a terrific coach. He is well grasped in the x and os and can be oldschool at the same time. Articulate in giving out instructions and is very poised even in pressure-cooked situation. This guy will go far as a coach than he was as a player.

He is a softee. Smaller version of Canlas. I wonder where is my favorite enforcer? Undersized but tough as nail Eric "el terrible" Rodriguez of Letran.

I think he was traded to Rain or Shine

Alaska might bolt PBA

02 Sep 2011
Alaska yesterday cut its ties with its long-time head coach while announcing it will not think twice leaving the PBA if ever ‘graft and corruption' becomes the norm in the league.

"I'm here today to confirm that we have released Tim Cone as head coach of the Alaska Aces," said team owner Wilfred Uytengsu during a hastily-called media conference yesterday.

"Indeed we're surprised, we're saddened. But of course we wish Tim well. We really had quite a journey. I know there wasn't a 22-year partnership like this in the PBA and I'm fairly sure to say that there never will be."

The gathering, though, wasn't about Cone leaving the Aces alone.

Answering a query from a broadcast journalist, Uytengsu said his team would leave the league if ever the league cannot control salary cap violations which he feels are rampant.

"The reality of the situation is that it's not a level playing field in the PBA," he said.

"Somewhere down the road, if we see the foundation of the PBA to crumble beyond repair and where graft and corruption becomes the norm, I think that may be the time that we have to look elsewhere because I don't think that the PBA is a viable medium of entertainment and that the participants playing in it as role models of the youth."

Uytengsu gave two-time Willie Miller and Joe Devance as examples, former Alaska players who were receiving the maximum salary of P350,000 but who still opted to play for different teams

"Why does Miller leave when he gets the max of P350,000? Why does Joe Devance leave when he gets P350,000 coming off a championship? Our P350,000 is as good as the next team's P350,000. It's the same P350,000.

"So when I ask the Commissioner ‘what's going on? He says ‘I don't have evidence'. Well, I say, dig for it, that's your job. You have to uncover these types of stuff. We're not idiots.

"The Commissioner has to take the leadership decision and he has to be above the rest of the Board to make that decision. But I don't want to be our team to be uncompetitive because we like to be the last boy scouts standing."

Cone, 53, left the only ball club he had mentored despite having a live contract for two more years, ending up as another unemployed statistic but, not necessarily, for long. Cone made clarificatory statements that he was never approached by any official from among the existing nine other ball clubs for a coaching spot.

"This has been an emotional thing for me," said Cone, who in 1998 missed an opportunity to lead the Aces to a second Grand Slam to concentrate on the Philippine Team competing in the Bangkok Asian Games. "I will see what other opportunities are out there, but there's nothing firm. If there's something out there, I'll take it.

"I'm jumping at this point and I hope I land on my feet."

Joel Banal, the senior assistant coach of the Aces, has been named the new head coach. Banal, who had already won a PBA championship as a head coach with Talk ‘N Text in 2003, accepted a three-year deal, making him as the only seventh head mentor of the franchise since it joined the PBA in 1986.

"I'm honored, excited, and inspired," Banal said.

As Cone bids farewell to Alaska, the long list of accomplishments will be one hard act to follow.

Sorry to say this but Sison will never be an effective Pba player. I watched a tune up game before between a team led by Coy banal and another( san juan coliseum). The game was really rough ( tirahan talaga ) then Coy asked Sison to check in. The guy refused to get into the court! Dinaga yung bata. He wasnt really known that time but you couldnt help but notice him because of his size. Well, fast forward today..the guy still hasnt shown that much considering all the exposure with Gilas. Got the info wrong. He is listed in BGK roster.

I'd like to see that Pumaren press in the pba! It could work but not the whole game, i saw it also used at times by Guiao in red bull with his kulit-bulilits, torion, topex, torion, junthy, cruz another small PG i cant recall the name but left handed..

In the NBA, i remember Rick Pitino's Celtics pressing the then defending champions Chicago Bulls and embarrassed them by a huge margin . The rest of the season though, the Celts sucked.

Honestly, who doesn't.

As mentioned by a poster in PEX, if the PBA does have a crack down on these teams, what happens if they threaten to leave the league? 4 teams to battle for the championships? They could even make a league of their own!

It's tolerated in the league, that's not open secret. What to do about it? i don't know if there's even a system that can solve it.

Uytengsu: the most vocal among owners in PBA in regards how PBA runs.

For example:

TNT

All Filipino - Champions
Bonus: Brand New Vios(more or less 600K) plus one monthly salary.(ex. jimmy)
So it's almost 1M bonus.

2nd Conf - Champions
Bonus: 600K plus one monthly salary.(ex. jimmy)
Again it's almost 1M bonus.

And all of this bonuses are well published in the news paper.

Now asked Joe Devance how much did he get when he won championship in Alaska. (1year supply of Alaska:eek::D)
