i thought Coke was rebuilding..they've already unloaded 2 ancient players in Telan and Belasco, and now they acquire another one? which is a lot slower than the two they traded ayaw...this is confusing
it's the PBA way hehehe
but Coke introduced something new .... they loaned Dimaunahan and Caceres
to Barako Bull and being generous they while this two players play as Barakos it would be Coke who would still pay their salaries.
I wonder how can they equate that in the salary cap computation which is said to be in place.

Its like the salaries counted to BB but they are the one who will shoulder it i bet They are next to minimum players especially MC regarding coke they are the old utah Jazz in the PBA but the problem is they have a young head coach who used to be batchmates or same prime with their 2 young frotline:D:D:D its like the China NT case I think the two will rely heavily on passes of their two very Good point guards

They acquired Denok in preparation for Olsen's exit? hehehe. this team is mad, they have a lot of high quality PG and yet they still get some. lolz
:D
than mentioned before the SMC philosophy of bringing in quality players as much as possible in order to 1) get better practice sessions and 2) more stars on your backyard means less for others, ultimately improving competitive chances
to sum up this is basically hoarding any talent you can get your hands on, however the balance indeed tilts unfavorably to these teams. TNT is already implementing the SMC methodology nowadays so expect more talent discrepancy between the rich and the poor teams in the future (at least on paper)

would it be that the PBA is trying to tip the balance of talent so that SUPER TEAMS in the mold of Crispa and Toyota would emerge in which they could
again get back those times wherein if you are a basketball it's either you are for Toyota and Crispa then encourage again on having fan clubs setted up in order to increase gate receipts and raise TV viewership.
In other words they are re-inventing the wheel and trying to simulate how it started. See the similarities with the PBA having tensions with the Basketball Federation, while before it is the BAP now it is the SBP.
Nahhhh cant be ..... most probably I've been watching too much CableTV with so many conspiracies.

Just forming a PBA team is quite expensive...How come the PBA don't even bother to lower the price for any expansion teams want to enter the league?

prohibitive eh? like I said in the other thread, more teams means less media exposure, less media exposure means decreased sales, thus less money.

Tiger again: Sta. Lucia’s Espino goes to Coca-Cola
09/03/2009 | 10:43 PM
Dennis Espino, a Sta. Lucia Realtor throughout his Philippine Basketball Association career, is now headed to his second team in 14 seasons of playing in the pro league.
The former University of Santo Tomas stalwart would become a “Tiger" again after the Realtors agreed to ship the veteran to the Coca-Cola Tigers in exchange for Jason Misolas and a future first-round pick.
“Konting ayos na lang…but we have already agreed in principle with Sta. Lucia," Coca-Cola assistant coach Bo Perasol told GMANews.TV.
At Coca-Cola, the 35-year-old Espino would find himself manning the fort with another veteran big man, Asi Taulava. Supporting them would be promising third-year pro Ken Bono and hardworking Larry Rodriguez.
By adding another experienced player, Perasol knows they have to work double time to making sure their frontliners are in tip-top condition for the Tigers’ running game.
“Nasa sa kanila naman yan on how they can live up to our team’s new philosophy, which is to run more," said Perasol. “Kailangan talagang magpa-kundisyon sila. Our idea is to have both Asi and Dennis together at the same time dahil sayang naman yung talent nila kung magpapalitan lang sila," said Perasol.
Sta. Lucia has surprisingly unloaded one key player after another the past few days. The Realtors have earlier traded guard Dennis Miranda to San Miguel Beer where he was reunited with former Far Eastern University teammate Arwind Santos.
The Realtors are reportedly set to unload another key player in the coming days. - GMANews.TV
Asi-Dennis-Ken Troika..one of the heaviest...heftiest..and slowest frontcourt this PBA season. :D

Chinese teams target on Tien Lei - Sep 4, 2009 (by Chris Wang)
At least two teams in the Chinese league CBA have targeted Taiwan forward Tien Lei (202-F-83) and reportedly offer a minimum monthly wage of US$20,000 (approximately NT$660,000), Liberty Times reported Friday.
It is the second time in this past month that Chinese team are targeting Taiwanese players following a recruiting offer for Taiwan Beer forward Lin Chih-chieh, who was offered to play in China for US$10,000 per month.
Tien Lei's father confirmed the offer, which Tien Lei said is too tempting to turn down. 'I don't think anyone who's been approached (to play in China) would say no, ' Tien was quoted by the Liberty Times as saying.
According to Liberty Times, a number of team representatives contacted Tien Lei during the Asian Championship in Tianjin, where Tien averaged 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds and helped Taiwan to a 5th place finish.
In addition to the monthly salary offer, Chinese representatives also promised to deal with Tien Lei's buyout clause with Dacin Tigers, one of seven teams in the Taiwanese league SBL.
However, Tien, Lin or anyone else will not be able to play overseas before the CTBA (Chinese Taipei Basketball Association) makes clear its policy.
Fearing that the potential exodus of top Taiwanese players will hollow out the domestic league, CTBA announced a '24-man protection list' last June after a circulating rumor saying that Chen Hsin-an would leave Taiwan and play in the CBA for a one-year contract that worth NT$6 million.
The list included 24 national team players and top Taiwanese players, including Tien, Lin, Chen Hsin-an, Tseng Wen-ting and Wu Tai-hao. Protected players were prohibited to play overseas within 12 months.
CTBA deputy secretary-general Wang Jen-sheng told the media the protection period has expired, which means it's possible for Taiwanese players to sign with Chinese teams in the second half of year 2009.
Dacin manager Wang Tsai-hsiang, son of Dacin owner and CTBA president Wang Jen-da, said that Xinjiang Flying Tigers expressed interests in signing the 6-7 lanky forward two years ago. Dacin and Tien eventually turned down the offer because Tien was rehabbing at the time.
'In fact Tien's salaries in China and Taiwan are about the same because Dacin players received a guaranteed 14-month annual salary plus the bonuses , while Chinese teams only pay their players during the 4-month season, ' Wang explained, saying that Tien Lei is expected to earn around NT$ 2.58 million in Taiwan and NT$ 2.64 million in China.
Wang Jen-da has called a CTBA meeting on September 17 to make a final decision about the matter, LT reported. The LT reporter wrote that the exodus looks like imminent if CTBA fails to establish a plan which focuses on SBL's long-term development.
I wonder if ever Mainland China's CBA teams would be interested in Filipino players. Because even if the CBA has only a 4 month season and pays it's players for the said months only but assuming you get a US$ 10,000 monthly contract that would amount to US$ 40,000 for the season and that would still be 1,920,000 in Philippine Pesos. That's not bad. In the CBA they allow the lower tiered teams to recruit 2 Asian players not from China to reinforce their teams but they are not considered as imports but are classified like local players. But the PBA is protected because they do not allow PBA contracted players to play with any other team unless both the player's team and the PBA itself allow it. Even exhibition games wherein a player plays for his alma mater or for a team involved in a fundraising event for a special cause is still covered by this rule.
The recently launced ASEAN Basketball League also allows Filipinos to play in teams outside the Philippine Patriots team of Mikee Romero and Tonyboy Cojuangco since each team is allowed two ASEAN imports and one player with one Southeast Asian parent on top of two imports of non-ASEAN citizenship.
In the past Filipino players had played as Imports in Indonesia's Indonesia Basketball League and at the tournaments in Brunei.
With many leagues opening their doors to Filipino players it is a very nice development for the players due to the dwindling number of commercial teams here right now in the Philippines.

Tien Lei I think is the pony-tailed 6'8" big man for the Taiwanese NT. If he is, then that guys is awesome. So tall, yet so quick, and so talented. He is the real deal (unlike some overhyped benchwarmer out there). Can create his own shots, and ran rings around the Powerade big men.
He will be worth that almost P1 millon equivalent per month they will be paying him.

Close but not quite..Tien Lei is the other big man of Taiwan. complete, smart game. Not too dominating. with 3 point capability. I really envied Taiwan for having him as well as the long-haired guy. Real quality big men.
He was much more prominent in the Jones Cup. Not too much with FIBA Asia.

I think even in the SBL, Tseng Wen-Ting has a better game than Tien Lei.
Tseng Wen-ting, Yulon, 202cm, 25
Tien Lei, Dacin, 202cm, 26
Points per Game
Tseng Wen-ting, Yulon 16.7 (ranked #4)
Tien Lei, Dacin 15.4 (ranked# 8)
Rebounds per game
Tseng Wen-ting, Yulon 9.3 (ranked# 2)
Tien Lei, Dacin 6.9 (ranked #7)
Assists per game
Tseng Wen-ting, Yulon 4.4 (ranked #2)
Tien Lei (no figures as not ranked in Top 5)
Blocks per game
Tseng Wen-ting, Yulon 2.1 (ranked #1)
Tien Lei, Dacin 1.6 (ranked #3)
But Tien Lei is part of Dacin Tigers which beat Taiwan Beer in 7 games to win its 1st Championship in the 2009 SBL. And Tien Lei was a 3 time SBL Regular Season MVP (2003-04 for Dacin, 2004-05 for Dacin and 2005-06 for Dacin).
Tseng Wen-Tei was never an SBL Regular Season MVP but unlike Tien Lei he became a SBL Finals MVP, actually two times (2004-05 with Yulon and 2005-06 with Yulon)
Both Tien Lei and Tseng Wen-Tei had one SBL All-Star Games MVP. In 2005-06 it was Tseng Wen-ting while with Yulon while in 2006-07 it was Tien Lei while with Dacin.
SBL History
Accumulative W-L, winning percentages
1. Yulon 134-40 .770
2. Taiwan Beer 104-70 .598
3. Dacin 103-71 .592
Regular season champions
2003-04 Yulon Dinos (19-5)
2004-05 Yulon Dinos (25-5)
2005-06 Yulon Dinos (24-6)
2006-07 Yulon Dinos (22-8)
2007-08 Yulon Dinos (23-7)

It's just as simple as this. You need a scorer? Go for Tien Lei. You need a Role player/rebounder? Go for Tseng Wen Ting. Tseng was clearly the leader of Taiwan last Fiba-Asia.
only in the PBA would we see such a lopsided trade (Arwind for Scrubs etc)
point of attention: Never trade Big for Small (i.e. Washington for Castro 08-09 season)
BTW was able to hear Barrios explanation of the salary cap..The PBA's cap is a joke..if a player is injured his salary does not count to the cap...but what if the player is not injured but there is no space in the roster for a marquee player..It's easy to circumnavigate the existing salary cap rule of the league...

and that explains why we have teams with so many maximum-paid players while before each team will only have one or 2. there were even some who have none. and to top it all, salary cap is bigger today than before and yet maximum salary is smaller than before :D.

A lot of stupid trades have been happening in the PBA lately and this trade won't help PBA to winback some fans. I mean, almost all of the trades that have transpired always favor thoes SMC-owned team. I won't be surprise if one day Joseph Yeo will be traded for a second-hand washing machine, a box of chocolate some chinnese herbal medicine and 2012 first round draft pick or better yet JR Quinahan for a liftime of supply of Monterey meat products and magnolia fresh milk!

tnt usually score good trades, especially with air 21/bk.
alaska score good trade at times but that team seldom make major changes.
but yes, the balance of power seems to be imbalance. but i like the trades anyway because having players switch teams at least provide freshness to a rather dragging and monotonic season. and add the gilas participation and im expecting a more entertaining pba season.

But who is the 2nd PBA team that would need the help of the other teams financial in order to maintain its PBA participation?

But come to think of it guys, on the other side of the coin, its the reality of life. That's why we say life is unfair.
I think in the Euroleague, there is no such thing as the salary cap. Richer teams get the best available talent of course. Greek teams like Olympiakos signed NBA players like Childress and Kleiza. But it doesn't guarantee them of winning the title year after year because after all basketball is a team sport. One team must be able to mesh together to get the exact chemistry that the team needs.
As for the not-so-rich teams, if they can't get the best players, they can always have a good system/game plan. Sound coaching, and multiple strategies to overcome their deficiences. Perfect their system both offensively and defensively. Work harder on practice. I think they must use their being underdogs (on paper) as additional motivation to excel.
After all, upsets ain't new in the game of basketball.

And they are the ones saying that rp basketball is not developing I believe we need teams to match the asian powerhouses like mahram Zain and others as unlike rp teams they have luxury of playing together as a unit and it is not really a selection. If not for the Filipino basketball players job security Im in for pba hiring european top guys or asian ace players so we can know(and infect:D:D:D) their game :D:D:D

I don't think its Sta. Lucia, because I don't think the local Real Estate business had been hit that hard.
If you look at the prices of condominum complexes like the Newport City, for example. Compared to late last year, instead of staying the same or depreciating, the prices of their two-bedroom units rose by P500k .

i don't know... i have some friends working in the TOP Real Estate company and they've felt the economic pinch since early this year (downsizing...) Anyway, let's see... It's definitely not SMC (SMB, PF, GIN), not TNT... Which leaves us with Coke (no.), Alaska (i doubt it)... Burger King (But MVP supports them so no.) So that leaves us to... Sta Lucia, Rain or Shine... i believe it's the latter...

Even in the NBA, you have team that historically won't get over the cap or luxury tax but still remain competitive like the Spurs and Pistons... Spurs this year did go over a bit with the Jefferson trade but in their past championships they practically never went beyond the limit.

Fil-Am Hrabak offered frontline job by Painters (http://mb.com.ph/node/219751/filam-hrabak-offered-frontline-job-painter)

Rain or Shine’s title campaign in the coming PBA All-Filipino Conference got a big boost after signing former Barako Bull forward Mike Hrabak to a six-month contract.
This was confirmed the other day by Rain or Shine co-owner Raymund Yu, who said Hrabak will help boost the team’s frontline rotation.
“Personally, Hrabak is a good addition to the team. He’s not only a threat inside but he has a good touch from the perimeter,” said Yu.
The 6-foot-7 Hrabak was Shell’s second overall draft pick in 2001 before moving to Purefoods in 2006 with the exit of Shell. He played limited minutes for Purefoods before he was shipped to Red Bull (now Barako). During the 2008 season, he won the Comeback Player of the Year awarded by the PBA Press Corps.

League members help each other out
by Rey Joble
THE problem besieging the Philippine Basketball Association now, where two teams are reportedly having financial problems, also happened in 1983 and 1984. It was during those years when four of the league’s squads faltered—and disbanded.
League rivals Crispa and Toyota, the biggest draw in the PBA at that time, were visibly affected by the economy brought about by the assassination of the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. Their fellow founding member Gallerie Dominique, owned by Nikki Coseteng and Winston Kings of the Manhattan Shirts franchise, likewise, felt the pinch.
Crispa was able to loan players to Winston Kings and Tanduay, sending its shock troopers like Romulo Mamaril and Tito Varela to the Filter Kings and Rhum Masters, respectively. Toyota was also able to help out Winston, which changed its name to Countryfair Hotdog, by lending Ed Merced.
The PBA also helped the cash-strapped Gallerie Dominique, formerly known as Mariwasa/Noritake in the pro league’s early years. PBA team members pooled together by coming to the aid of the team by paying the salaries of its players.
Eventually, Toyota, owned before by Delta Motors of the Silverios, folded up by the end of 1983. Then, Crispa, which completed its second grand slam, followed the suit in 1984.
In 1986, the PBA had its lowest number of participating teams with six, and struggled when Manila Beer of Lucio Tan also decided to disband its squad at the end of the season.
This year, history seems to repeat itself as two teams— Barako Bull and Sta. Lucia—are feeling the economic crunch.
Newly-installed league chairman Lito Alvarez stressed the importance of coming up with cost-efficient ways and means in order for the league to survive.
“Kailangan maghigpit tayo ng sinturon because of the economic crisis,” said Alvarez. “’Yung krisis na nararamdaman natin, hindi biro-biro ‘yan at hindi lang Pilipinas ang apektado dito.”
Barako Bull, which traded its key players the past few years, was one of those visibly affected. Teams like Coca-Cola and Talk N Text have recently come to their aid by lending their respective players, whose salaries will be shouldered by their mother teams.
Sta. Lucia traded its key players over the week—Denok Miranda and team captain Dennis Espino—a move that would somehow give their team’s salary cap some breathing room.
Sta. Lucia, which has reportedly obtained a P5.29-million net income in the first quarter of 2009, is slowly trying to bounce back from P85.02-million losses in the same period last year.
“Kaya nga tinawag kaming association, to help each member out,” he said. ”Pero kailangan ding mag-take ng cue ang iba pang miyembro para maiwasan ang mga ganu’ng sitwasyon.”
The PBA has imposed a salary cap of P32 million, including a maximum P350,000 monthly pay for its stars. But the new chairman explained the figures could be deceiving because there are other factors involved in maintaining a team.
“Sa salaries lang iyon. Hindi pa kasama ang mga tapes, bonuses, etc.,” he said. “Kaya ‘pag pinagsama-sama mo lahat ng gastusin mahina-hina ang P70 million a year.”
But a source from the league said that there are teams used to the practice of paying excessive salaries to some players—an accusation that is hard to dispute, but was brought to the attention of key PBA officials.
“Parang it makes little sense na pati ‘yung 13th player mo malaki pa rin ang suweldo. Ang dapat siguro diyan, mga up to the eighth player lang ang malaki suweldo,” said Alvarez.

Barako Bull's trade with TNT valid (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideSports.htm?f=//2009/september/26/sports3.isx&d=/2009/september/26)

THE trade between Barako Bull and Talk N Text involving three players and two future first-round picks is valid.
Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Sonny Barrios confirmed this to Standard Today in a telephone conversation last night despite the fact that a coach and one team owner are questioning the legitimacy of the trade.
“Hindi naman pupuwedeng irelease sila ng walang kapalit,” said Barrios. “It’s a legitimate trade, that’s why I approved it.”
The three players whom the Tropang Texters sent to the Energy Boosters were Yousif Aljamal, Rob Reyes and Gilbert Lao. They were traded in exchange for the 2010 and 2011 first-round draft picks of Barako Bull.
But Alaska coach Tim Cone was very much vocal in opposing the trade, which he felt was one-sided.
“I heard that Barako Bull traded its two future first-round picks for three practice players. Somehow, these type of trades have to stop,” reacted Cone in his Twitter account. “I’m worried about the league balance, unfair trades and abuse of the salary caps. The future of the league is a little scary.”
PBA chairman Lito Alvarez of Burger King believes the trade looks “one-sided at first glance.” But he justified reasons as to why it was legal.
“Yousif Aljamal and Rob Reyes were first-round draftees,” said Alvarez. “Then, you added Gilbert Lao to the mix. Mukha lang one-sided because of the present lineup Barako Bull has. But we can never tell what would happen in the future. We don’t even know the type of players who will enter the draft at that time. So I think it’s a legal trade.”
Barako Bull is one of the teams feeling the financial pinch at this time. Recently, other team members came to the aid of the Photokina franchise in order for the Bulls to sustain their participation in the 35th season of the PBA by lending their players, whose contract will be absorbed by their mother teams, and exempting the Energy Boosters from the salary cap rule.

Even Toroman can not save that scrub. Come on now this is Gilbert Lao we are talking about ;)
personally i am surprised that lao has managed to stay in the pba for long in spite of being unproductive. he's not that tall and taller players like ryzal castro (FEU) ought to have been given more chance than him. skills-wise, i would say that the likes of jerwin gaco or manny ramos of dlsu are better, offensivenly, defensively, and rebounding-wise. heck, for a "big man", he's too lanky and soft without agility or shooting and yet he always managed to score a slot in a pba team. power of the talent manager perhaps?
how long has Lao been in the league? he barely played ten games a season...

I think no one had answered my query if there is a penalty or sanction in the PBA if a team violates the salary cap. In the NBA there is a severe Luxary Tax for starters. I am pretty sure San Miguel and Talk N Text had already exceeded the 32 million, even if you exclude the players in the injury list the other players have excessive amounts to receive.
If there is no penalty or sanctions or penalties for salary cap violations then how can it serve as a deterent if its just a mere guide.

Gilbert has been in the league ever since he was drafted by Coca-cola as #11 overall in the 2002 PBA Rookie Draft. He has managed to stay in the PBA due to his height of 6'7 by accepting his role of a benchwarmer or a practice player and has no complaints of not getting minutes played and is contented to get even the minimal salary.

Speaking of former TnT practice players who used to train w/ gilas, Aldave is now reportedly with the Pampanga Buddies of Liga Pilipinas
technically Aldave is still part of TNT as the Pampanga Buddies is owned and managed by SMART Sports. It is the GILAS Assistant Coaches
Allan Gregorio and Jude Roque who are handling the Buddies. Also part of the Pampanga team are GILAS pool members Ford Arao and Chester Taylor.

when i first read about lao when he was playing for ust, the papers said he was 6'7. but i saw him once in a game and he is not. saw him again playing live as a BGK and TNT player and his ht is similar. he just looks taller maybe because he's lanky. he's probably 6'5-6'6.

i also do not know but before i think there is no sanction similar to the nba. so maybe there is still none today.
what i can remember before, and possibly still a present practice, is that contracts are reviewed and approved by the commissioners office and the commish has the authority to disapprove a contract if it will gp beyond the team's salary. that's why there was issue before in the past where allegedly teams will have a secret contract with a player outside of the uniform player(s) contract (UPC) because the original and legal contract are presented to, reviewed by, and subject to approval by the commisioners office (eg. al solis's case). im speaking from memory of my childhood though so im not sure about this.

Texters bag big man Isip (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/sports/16900-burger-king-boss-aguilar-back-on-negotiating-table.html)
TALK ’N TEXT added a big man to boost its bid of defending the Philippine Cup title.
The Tropang Texters signed free agent Mark Isip to a one-year contract to beef up their frontline. Details of the contract were not disclosed.
Talk 'N Text will be Isip’s fourth team in his four years in the PBA. The 28-year-old former Far Eastern University forward was drafted by Sta. Lucia Realty in 2006 and was traded to Coke the following year in a deal that involved Alex Cabagnot.
After a season with the Tigers, Isip was part of the package in another trade deal with Rain or Shine for veteran forward Nic Belasco.
He was released by the Elasto Painters during the off-season and tried out for several teams, including Barangay Ginebra.
Isip is a welcome addition to the Tropang Texters of coach Chot Reyes following the loss of backup big men Gilbert Lao and Rob Reyes in the off-season.
Lao and Reyes were loaned by Talk ’N Text to Barako Bull.

it seems that the salary cap of the PBA is superficial since there are a number of loopholes to circumvent the rules (i.e. an injured player doesn't count), the Matthews effect is prevalent in the PBA, the rich gets richer (SMC teams) and the poor gets poorer (if there is such a word)
Why not just abolish the cap rule to emulate the euroleague model?
My biggest wish is for the PBA to merge with the ABL, the Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese leagues and the CBA to create an Asian Super League similar to the European Leagues (I am currently working on that patch for NBA Live 08), with what's left of the PBA serving as a farm league or Division 2

Cone blasts one-sided PBA trades (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideSports.htm?f=//2009/october/16/sports2.isx&d=/2009/october/16)
by Rey Joble
ALASKA coach Tim Cone, the winningest mentor among active coaches in the Philippine Basketball Association, and the only remaining mentor who won a grand slam in the pro league, is known to be an outspoken bench tactician.
But he is not afraid speaking from his heart as well. Cone shared his thoughts on what he perceived as the one-sided trades that took away the balance of competition in the Asia’s first play-for-pay league. The longest-tenured mentor was very much active posting his thoughts on Twitter, a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. It is also being used by celebrities both from the entertainment and sporting worlds, businessmen and people from all walks of life.
“The backroom deals that go on in the league never fail to amaze me. How do we keep balance when the best teams get all the best draft picks?” said Cone. “Somebody needs to step in and void these crazy trades. We need a few good men, not just one.”
Cone also questioned whether the salary cap is strictly being imposed or not.
“By definition, the draft/salary cap is supposed to ensure league balance. Without them, league schism between haves and have-nots widens,” added Cone. “I’ll be the first to say that the salary cap is being abused, that’s for sure, but certainly not by Alaska. Our owner is very strict.”
In a conversation with Standard Today, PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios believes that trades that were brought to him for approval were done legally.
PBA chairman Lito Alvarez added that trade negotiations that are up for approval are matters involving the commissioner.

I remember in 2006 then PBA commissioner Noli Eala approved a revised part of the three-cornered deal among Coca-Cola, Ginebra and Air21, officially completing a controversial seven-player trade that almost divided the league.
In a scenario first drawn up the Tigers were supposed to acquire Manny Ramos and Kalani Ferreria and a future first round pick of the Kings acquired by Air21 in an earlier trade. In return, Coca-Cola will give back Air21’s 2007 and 2008 first round picks and hand over its second round pick in 2008.
Approved were two earlier deals that shipped Rafi Reavis, Billy Mamaril and the rights to Rudy Hatfield to Ginebra via Air21. The deals were deemed to be too one-sided in Ginebra’s favor, drawing howls of protest from the rest of the teams.
Under the revised portion of the deal, Air21 traded Manny Ramos and Kalani Ferreria, plus two second round picks acquired from San Miguel Beer and Ginebra, to Coke.

This is too much, its unfair! Barrios and the board should also consider making BGK's games non-bearing.

Whopper want 2 more cagers
by Rey Joble
Wednesday Nov. 4, 2009
BURGER King is slowly but surely feeling the effects of the absence of veteran playmaker Wynne Arboleda.
Last week, an undrafted rookie named Josh Urbiztondo showed the way and toyed with the entire Whopper’s backcourt. The newcomer guard finished with 24 points, four rebounds and four assists in the Realtors’ 101-93 triumph over Whopper.
Burger King coach Yeng Guiao told Standard Today in a telephone interview that they are planning to include two more players to fill their roster.
“We’re not in a hurry,” said Guiao. “We feel that’s not an immediate need, although we need two players to fill the spots vacated by Wynne and Erick [Rodriguez].”
But the two players won’t come via a trade, according to Guiao.
“Maybe mga free agents na ‘yung kukunin as much as possible,” Guiao added.
Arboleda was banned to play in the Philippine Basketball Association for the rest of the season after he mauled a fan, while Rodriguez suffered an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury that will sideline him for the next five months.
Burger King team manager and newly-installed PBA chairman Lito Alvarez said that they have yet to make a concrete stand as to who the players they will tap. But he did mention one familiar name.
“Somebody brought the name of Topex Robinson,” said Alvarez. “He might be included on the short list, but pag-aaralan pa naming mabuti ni coach Yeng. Right now, hindi namin minamadali.”

if the whoppers needs an ample replacement for arboleda, they should take a look at ramsey williams of quezon red oilers. he's an undrafted free agent and therefore he's free for any negotiation i believe. he's a good point guard. can score, defend and create plays for the team.

i believe topex will get one of the spot. this would lessen the chances of free agent point guards out there. the other spot will most likely go to a big man since this spot was vacated by injured erick rodriguez.....unless coach yeng wants two guards for him to test who's fit for the starting role.

Burger King may tap Sena
JAMES Sena, San Miguel Beer’s first-round pick in the rookie draft this season, might become the last player to be included on Burger King’s roster.
The 6’4” former Jose Rizal University Bomber, was released by the Beermen and Burger King team manager Lito Alvarez and head coach Yeng Guiao are now seriously looking at the possibility of including the hardworking forward.
“He will be attending the practice today,” Alvarez told Standard Today. “It’s a possibility that he might be added, but it will still depend on the recommendation of Coach Yeng.”
Ramsey Williams, an undrafted rookie, was just signed up by the Whopper to a one-conference contract, to fill in the void left by suspended veteran guard Wynne Arboleda.
Sena might be able to take the place vacated by injured forward Erick Rodriguez.
Meanwhile, RJ 810 AM will be the new official radio coveror of the Philippine Basketball Association.
This was disclosed by PBA media bureau chief and special assistant to the commissioner Willie Marcial last night.
“Starting Wedneday, the RJ 810 will be the newest coveror on radio,” said Marcial. “It will be composed of the same people on the radio panel to be headed by Ed Picson.”

well its a big relief for james sena. he had almost end his pro career that draft day. im actually one of the many (including james sena himself:D) that got dismayed when he was picked by san miguel in the 1st round. being drafted by san miguel is the next bitter thing to being ineligible for draft day cause you were absent in the pre-draft workouts:D. i would rather end undrafted than land with the talent-horder san miguel team. i just hope that bk sign him cause the kid really got talent. wish him all the best. and all the worst to san miguel:D
may samigue eman be the last of the talented rookies that they'll waste. :)

a first round draftee was released without playing a single game for the team who drafted him? a top pick who refused to play for the team who drafted him but was held hostage and threatened before being released but not after lengthy negotiations. now the team who held him hostage is the one interested in taking in the released player. well, what can we say? it's the irony of having speaking too soon. hope this will be an eye opener for these suckers.

Rudy Hatfield returns to RP as a missionary

November 16, 2009, 1:26pm
Rufa Mae Quinto’s ex-boyfriend, cager Rudy Hatfield is now a missionary.
“All the basketball and all the fame are gone and I realize I don’t really need that. I didn’t deserve it in the first place when I started learning the truth about Jesus,” he shared.
Rudy has been married for two years and has two daughters. He left the Philippines in 2005---a year after he and Rufa Mae broke up---to begin a new life.
He recently returned to the Philippines to aid the typhoon victims.
Asked to advise Ruffa on her forthcoming wedding, Rudy said: “Put God in the center of their marriage life. My wife and I found it and I hope she finds it too. I hope she looks to God first and all things will be fruitful in life.”

PBA: Perasol replaces Duremdes as Coca-Cola coach
11/27/2009 | 10:32 PM
Coca-Cola appointed Bo Perasol as the new Tigers coach while elevating former mentor Kenneth Duremdes to the team’s front office as an alternate governor in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) board.
JB Baylon, the Coca-Cola team manager and PBA board governor, confirmed this moments before the Tigers take on the Ginebra Gin Kings Friday night at the Big Dome.
“Well, Kenneth was supposed to file his candidacy in his province, but failed to get a transfer of residency for him to run in the elections," Baylon told GMANews.TV. “But we knew his basketball value, so we elevated him as alternate board governor."
Baylon also added that Duremdes might head the company’s basketball grassroots program.
Coca-Cola will be the second team Perasol will be handling. He steered Air21 to the 2007-2008 Fiesta Conference finals where the Express lost to the Gin Kings in a tough seven-game title series.
But the former University of the Philippines Maroon is rich in coaching experience, handling Philippine Basketball League team Paralux, Surigao Miners in the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) before becoming a member of Air21’s coaching staff.
While a part of the Express’ coaching staff, Perasol also worked as a corporate manager in the Bert Lina-owned company.

Burger King and Coca-Cola closed a trade deal in the first working day of 2010 with the Whoppers acquiring the services of Alex Cabagnot and Wesley Gonzales for Gary David and Chico Lanete.
“On our end, we made this deal to solve our problem on the absence of Wynne Arboleda. With our acquisition of Alex Cabagnot, we’ve got a solid guard to rely on,” Burger King top official Lito Alvarez told The STAR.
“But acquiring a solid player requires you to also give up a solid player. We had to give up Gary David,” Alvarez added.
At Coca-Cola, David will be playing under former Air21 (now BK) coach Bo Perasol.
“Coach Bo asked for Gary. He knows how to use Gary. He blossomed to the kind of player he is today under coach Bo with us,” Alvarez said.
The two ballclubs worked on this trade deal in an effort to improve their bids in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup which resumes tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Whoppers (5-10) and the Tigers (3-12) are down in the lower half of the chart, slugging it out with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (4-10) and the Barako Bull Energy Boosters (2-12) for the last three slots in the wildcard plays.
In fact, Cabagnot and David are doing well individually.
Cabagnot is No. 18 in the stats side of the Best Players of the Conference derby with averages of 13.5 points, 5.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds.
Burger King is Cabagnot’s third team after being drafted by Sta. Lucia No. 2 overall behind Jay Washington in the 2005 annual draft.
“We need a player like Cabagnot but it’s not easy to give up Gary David,” Alvarez told The STAR moments after announcing the trade deal to the Lina Group people after a Mass at Cargohaus in Pasay.
“Even Mr. (Bert) Lina was surprised. He talked to me and reminded me how close to each other the daughters of Wynne (Arboleda) and Gary (David),” said Alvarez. “I’m sure, though, that everything will be fine. This is just basketball and friends will always be friends.”
David, a product of Lyceum University, is originally a Coca-Cola Tiger.
No. 10 draft pick by Coca-Cola in 2004, David played one season with the Tigers then was shifted to Air21.
Meanwhile, the PBA said due to the busy international basketball calendar this year, top-caliber Asian imports whom the PBA teams hope to tap in a bid to draw the crowds may not be available to play in the coming Fiesta Conference.
“Most of the big name stars we hope to sign are either tied up with their mother ballclubs or will be deep in training for the big international tournaments scheduled late this year,” according to the PBA.
The league said teams can now openly recruit their respective imports for the 2010 Fiesta Conference with a 6-foot-6 height limit.

Tagalog-speaking American Alex Compton will sit on the Coca-Cola bench as one of head coach Bo Perasol’s assistants.
Coke team manager JB Baylon and Perasol said Compton would work well as a “bridge” between the Filipino-Americans and locals on the team.
“His ability to talk to assistant coach Will Antonio and [rookie] Chris Ross in English would be of great value to the team,” Baylon told the BusinessMirror on Wednesday.
Perasol said the former Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) star would be of great help in explaining to the Filipino-Americans the Xs and Os of their system.
“Ang maganda kasi kay Alex, he speaks in English and Tagalog and with his ability, mas mapapadali ang communication sa team,” said Perasol.
The Tigers are running ninth overall with a 3-12 win-loss record, just half-a-game ahead of Barako Bull (2-12). The last-placed team after the double-round elimination in the Philippine Cup of the 35th Philippine Basketball Association season will be eliminated.
But more than Compton’s ability to communicate to all members of the team, Baylon said his basketball knowledge is another main reason management took him in.
Compton was given a two-year contract by Coke management. He was an assistant to Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia but decided to take a leave of absence to focus on the National Basketball Training Center of Eric Altamirano.
Perasol said Compton’s track record as a coach, player and person would give the team the extra mile.
“Alex is a teacher of the sport by heart, which I am also,” said Perasol, who is coaching the team on interim basis following the promotion of Kenneth Duremdes as alternate governor to the league board.
“He’s also a positive man in a sense that he likes to share his knowledge to other people and with Coke, we expect him to squeeze out the best from each of our players,” he added.
Compton will debut with the Tigers on January 13 when they collide with powerhouse San Miguel Beer.

There are more big deals coming up as teams try to beat the deadline by the end of the eliminations. There are talks of trading one of the most popular PBA stars, a wingman who had just recovered from injury, and an energy guy who’s been all hustle for his squad. An athletic forward and a center/power forward who shoots well could be traded too. One of the guys who just got moved might not stay for too long. Teams are shaking things up, and I’m excited! I certainly disagree on this. The last time I saw Eman play was back in the PBL. The only thing he is good at he finishes at the post really well, without any fancy "power dribble" that most of the big men do.
The "Triangle" offense needs a player that has a little outside shooting game. Take a look of John Ferriols and Reynel Hugnatan, even though they play inside, they also have some perimeter shooting to boot.
It will take a year or 2 before Eman could blend himself to the system, like Mike Burscher.

I would not be surprised if ROS is shopping around Jay-R as he seems to be their only asset which other teams might be interested to trade for a player of theirs plus cash. That could be the only way so that they could be able to keep both Gabe Norwood and Sol Mercado as both are now in their last year of their rookie contracts and are receiving the 350 per month max contracts. Aside front these two players, T.Y Tang's contract is also expiring and even though he does not get a max contract the amount he get's is also quite big. This pose a big problem for ROS as their team maintainance costs has now risen more than double from the first time they came into the league and it comes in a wrong time werein we are still feeling the effect of the Global Economic Recession and that the coming Elections would mean a lot of politicians would be coming over to the offices of these wealthy businessmen asking for their financial support for these politicians election campaign.

Aces sign Eman to 3-year pact
By Nelson Beltran (http://www.philstar.com/ArticleListByAuthorName.aspx?AuthorName=By+Nelson+ Beltran)

Samigue Eman | Zoom (http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/7533/spo3hires.jpg)
MANILA, Philippines - Alaska Milk signed up Samigue Eman to a three-year contract, giving the Aces a potent triple tower combination in the 6-foot-9 Davaoeno behemoth and 6-foot-7 old mainstays Sonny Thoss and Joe De Vance.
Eman, the 2007 PBA Draft No. 2 pick whose existing pact is to expire in July, was given a three-year contract extension deal (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=550071&publicationSubCategoryId=69#) by Alaska worth around P11 million.
The Aces got the opportunity to acquire Eman after San Miguel Beer put the player on its unrestricted reserve list so it could reactivate Danny Seigle and Danny Ildefonso from the injured pool.
Before he was signed by Alaska, the SMC management was thinking on working (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=550071&publicationSubCategoryId=69#) a deal that would have sent Eman to Barangay Ginebra.
“I understand other teams tried to sign up Eman but the guy chose to be with Alaska, believing he would have the chance to show what he can do with us,” Alaska team manager (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=550071&publicationSubCategoryId=69#) Joaqui Trillo told The STAR.
“I believe he’ll have his playing minutes but he has to work (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=550071&publicationSubCategoryId=69#) hard for it,” Trillo added.
With the addition of Eman, coach Tim Cone is looking forward to the near future where he could have a triple tower combination like that of Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom of the Los Angeles Lakers.
“The lineups of the four teams in the semifinals are basically frozen right now. So obviously we cannot include him in our lineup. But this is a real opportunity because we got him about a month before the next conference. So we will have the chance to teach him our system, develop him during our practices and to teach him our triangle. So it’s really good timing for us because it gives us time for him to come in and learn,” said Cone.
Eman, a bench tenant at San Miguel in his first two seasons in the pros, was introduced to his new teammates in practice Saturday.
“I’m thankful to San Miguel, they treated me well in my stint with them. But I’m already in my third year in the PBA and I want an opportunity to prove myself. Hopefully, I can get it with Alaska,” said Eman.
“I’m happy I’ll be playing alongside Sonny Thoss. I’ll not be challenging him but I’ll challenge myself. I want to see if I really belong in the pro league,” Eman added.
Trillo and Cone both see a lot of untapped potential in Eman.
“I saw a lot of him (Eman) while he played in the PBL and at the time he was much more advanced than Sonny at that stage in their careers. Look how far Sonny has gone now. But you know Sam’s a hardworking guy. He seems to be a pretty decent guy. He seems to be a hard worker and he assures us that he will do anything it takes to be able to play quality minutes,” said Trillo.
“Sam is a big man who won’t only back up Sonny (Thoss). We really envision Sam and Sonny playing together a lot. Sam did not have a spot with San Miguel because their roster is so deep,” said Cone.
“We will give him that opportunity to come in and play. We feel the triangle is a great developer of big men because it demands that big men use their skills. And so I think Sam has a big opportunity to develop with us and we will assist him and give him minutes to play,” Cone added.
At San Miguel, Eman was able to play only 19 games in his rookie year and 12 games in the next season. In those games, he averaged 3.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in 9.1 minutes per outing.

I really do not know what are the PBA team's basis on getting into the amount of salary they offer or give to their players.
I am just concerned as this is making a lot of players overpaid and making a lot of teams spend too much and go over the set salary cap.
I agree Samigue with his height, he has a big potential but does that alone could dictate how much he should get thus disrupting the salary scale.
I do not know but I do have some questions if Eman Samigue is really deserving to get P 305.6 thousand per month with what he had accomplished so far in the PBA and his playing career.
If the teams would give away this kind of salaries, how can they seriously say that they want the salaries to be be within a salary cap, the big moneyed teams could possibly afford giving out outrageous salaries but how about the smaller teams, In San Miguel alone more than half of its team are receiving over 300 thousand per month. Ultimately this would take the smaller teams out of the running in getting top-notch players or even mid-range players as said players are valued too high.

they must be paying based on his potential. hehehe
one thing that should not escape us, top picks (1st, 2nd, 3rd) are given the maximum of P350,000/month on their 3rd year. again, this is based on potential.
meanwhile, proven veterans and borderline superstars only receive much less.
in the nba, they have a much better protection for vets vis a vis rookie pay scale.

from what I heard it is also a sort of strategy by the bigger teams to make their players untradeable as the other teams could not afford to match the player's salary aside from making the team go over the salary cap.
yes I know about the top picks scenario, that's what's causing problems in ROS Corporate Cash Flow as they are now paying Gabe, Sol, Jay-R and Telan the max 350 thou per month with TY also getting a little over 300 though also. With Arana getting over 200 thou. It's good Jervy and Marcy are on the 1st year of their rookie contracts. That's why ROS was forced to let go of players like Wainwright and Isip together with Assistant Coach Alex Compton as Team Maintainance costs are getting out of hand already.

i believe there are so much issues with salary cap, pay scale and parallel matters.
for one thing, if a player is placed in the injury list, his salary is not included in the cap. ayos!
about the rookie pay, it needs some tweaking.
or ROS should go the BB or BK route, selling their players like slaves. hehehe

what I am driving at is in the end only the big companies like San Miguel, PLDT and Alaska could afford to maintain a team and that could probably cause the PBA to close down just like what happened to Australia's NBL.
the PBA as a league should not let this happen, the salaries of the players should be rationalized before it becomes too late. The PBL initially tried to make itself to be a Semi-Pro league, now look what happened, it was the more stable companies who quit on the League as they could no longer justify the maintainance of a basketball team.

about the rookie pay, it needs some tweaking.
or ROS should go the BB or BK route, selling their players like slaves. hehehe
it should not be slaves players should know that in this company you can't give you the salary you want but can give you playing time you want(Eman, Dela Pena) to prove yourself and be on the radar of richer teams(Arwind,Denok, Red bull,Air 21 players path). Its more good than a richer team letting go of their once serviceable player for a younger one.
Players now should not think all salary but really cannot blame them

what I am driving at is in the end only the big companies like San Miguel, PLDT and Alaska could afford to maintain a team and that could probably cause the PBA to close down just like what happened to Australia's NBL.
the PBA as a league should not let this happen, the salaries of the players should be rationalized before it becomes too late. The PBL initially tried to make itself to be a Semi-Pro league, now look what happened, it was the more stable companies who quit on the League as they could no longer justify the maintainance of a basketball team.
yes, they should rationalize the salary structure. but i highly doubt if it will happen as factions have been created within and amongst them.
and if some teams can no longer properly support their team financially they should sell their franchise to more fluid and more stable companies.
one team we know have delayed the release of players' salaries so much so that they have to sell their players just to survive. hehehe

the problem is that the teams that are very vocal of joining the league in the past has become less interested. Harbour Centre is now concentrating in the ABL, Hapee tootpaste had quitted the PBL, Caltex cannot join anymore as it is in direct competition with San Miguel owned-Petron aside from the fact the company is no longer one of the top corporations here in the Philippines. Barako Bull and Sta Lucia had long been lsilently ooking for buyers of their franchise but there are no takers. Coca-cola is barely hanging-on after the POWERADE debacle in Tianjin, Baylon is having a hard time justifying to his bosses at Atlanta in maintaining a professional basketball team, Coke is now in the same situation as Pilipinas Shell was before.
the moneyed families would rather invest in schools than go to the PBA. Then the Gokongweis, Ayalas, Silverios, Palancas, Concepcions, Elizaldes, Syjucos, Tans, had actually been part of the PBA in past but they had all walked away.

6'7 Erick Canlas and 6'9 Erwin Sotto are some of the big guys which did not evolve under Tim Cone.
actually I am disappointed also with the progress of Joe Devance as he is so inconsistent. There are a lot of times Alaska needs him but he is rather soft.
Maybe it really depends on the player. It could be Sonny Thoss is more of a sponge kind of person. There are just some players that no amount of coaching is enough as they really does not have it. Like Raul Dillo and Raymund Lacson ..... it is just basketball is not for them. I would never forget the time Lacson suddenly cried when Coach Ron Jacobs was already losing patience in giving him instructions.

ok. but some of these guys just need playing time and exposure to get their confidence back. sometimes it's just a mental thing
i don't think thoss would really be this good if he was benched all the time. i think cone is molding devance to be a hawkins prototype.
on the salary cap thing, last time i checked it was cone who was protesting smc teams' apparent salary cap violation. yup, i also think eman is not worth 300thou a month.

maybe eman isnt worth 300k but some stars like miller, asi santos , or kelly williams doesnt deserve the 350 k max salary but where did they compesate, in their bonuses but nothing you can do about it not all the teams in pba are rich but the salary cap rule is is been exploited since it was implemented(from 500k to 350k)

The wacky moves of Alaska
While the heated semifinals battle in the PBA Philippine Cup rages on, Alaska quietly made a move to bolster its frontline by plucking little-used Samigue Eman from San Miguel’s reserve list. While the center wouldn’t be able to suit up for the Aces until the next conference, the foxiness of the move wasn’t lost on basketball fans that saw the center play in the PBL, before he got injured prior to joining the PBA draft.
In Eman, Alaska gets a young center who boasts not just untapped potential, but who showed surprising athleticism and a nasty edge during his PBL days with Welcoat/Rain or Shine. Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo compares Eman favorably with Alaska’s all-star center Sonny Thoss.
The savvy maneuver is just another in a long line of savvy moves for the Aces. While the team’s record isn’t perfect when it comes to developing players, the team’s brain trust led by Trillo and coach Tim Cone make it a point to try to find players who will fit into the team’s system. Sometimes, it doesn’t pan out – I always wondered why guys like Brixter Encarnacion, Don Camaso, and Aaron Aban didn’t mesh with the system – more often than not, it works. It’s no coincidence that the franchise has made it to the semifinals of the all-Filipino conference 4 times in the last 5 years.
So despite not having the resources of the richer SMC teams or Talk N Text, the Aces have managed to be consistently successful. How do they do it? With trades like these:
Year Trade Notes
1991 Elmer Cabahug to Purefoods for Jojo Lastimosa
Cabahug had a three great seasons with Purefoods that included two All-Filipino crowns, but these were marred by salary issues. Lastimosa was the leader of the Alaska franchise for the next decade, and ended the ‘90s with 10 championships (9 with Alaska).
1993 Bong Alvarez to Sta. Lucia for Bong Hawkins
Alaska traded away troubled superstar Alvarez for Hawkins, the third member of its vaunted triangle along with Lastimosa and Johnny Abarrientos. Alvarez got into more trouble in his stint with Sta. Lucia, when he hooked up with Vivian Velez, got injured, hung out with Benjie Paras in the US, and asked for a trade to Shell to hang out with his buddy. That didn’t work out either.
1995 Bong Solomon to Ginebra for the draft pick that turned out to be Jeffrey Cariaso
After getting traded to Ginebra, the team discovered that Solomon was legally blind. He might have still been a better player than Dudut Jaworski though.
1997 Cris Bolado to Purefoods for Rodney Santos and Bryant Punzalan
While Cris Bolado won a championship for Purefoods as a lucky charm backup to Jerry Codinera, Santos (whose awful nickname ‘The Slasher’ was coined by our favorite Quinito Henson) was an integral part of Alaska’s late ‘90s championship run, usually playing point guard in Tim Cone’s big backcourt set.
1997 Kenneth Duremdes to Pop Cola for Dwight Lago and Boyet Fernandez Alaska lost Cariaso left for Mobiline that season for a more lucrative offer, but the Milkmen stole Duremdes, then a backup to Vergel Meneses at Pop, in a late season trade. Alaska subsequently won the next three conference championships with Duremdes in its lineup.
2003 Brandon Cablay to Sta. Lucia for Kenneth Duremdes
The shocker of the 2003 draft saw Alaska trading its top gun in exchange for a draft pick. But the move gave the Aces financial flexibility to stock up on talent, while Duremdes’ massive contract became an albatross for Sta. Lucia, who didn’t win a championship until after they traded Duremdes to Coke four years later.
2005 John Arigo and Ali Peek to Coca-Cola for Jeffrey Cariaso and Reynel Hugnatan
Alaska looked like they got the short end of the stick, talent-wise, in this trade. But Cariaso’s leadership was a boon for the team’s chemistry, and Hugnatan has transformed into one of Alaska’s most important players as a frontcourt Swiss army knife for Tim Cone off the bench.
2006 Don Allado to Talk N Text for Willie Miller and John Ferriols
At the time, Talk N Text coach Derrick Pumaren justified this trade because it allowed his team to acquire Renren Ritualo. Okaay. Since the trade, Miller has been the Aces’ franchise player.
2008 Mike Cortez and Ken Bono to San Miguel for LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier
While Mike Cortez has been a solid backup point guard for the Beermen, no one’s comparing him to Johnny Abarrientos. Meanwhile, Tenorio’s steady improvement has people gushing about him as potentially the best point guard in the league since the Flying A.
Of course, not all trades are lopsided: Johnny Abarrientos to Coca-Cola for Ali Peek and Jon Ordonio was alright for Alaska, but keyed the 2003 All-Filipino title for Coke. Its 2006 swap with San Miguel involving Brandon Cablay and Nic Belasco was a push, as neither played stayed long for either team. The 2008 trade for Mark Borboran in exchange for JR Quinahan looks pretty even, with each player contributing for his new team, as is the trade with Rain or Shine that featured Joe Devance for Sol Mercado and Eddie Laure. Still, you can’t say that Alaska got fleeced in any of these trades.
Ten years from now, when I become a billionaire and buy my own PBA team, the first rule for my team manager would be to never, ever trade with Joaqui Trillo.

Alaska owner Fred Uytengsu: SMC is harassing Samigue Eman (http://firequinito.com/archives/289-Alaska-owner-Fred-Uytengsu-SMC-is-harassing-Samigue-Eman.html)
Got another interesting email in my inbox this morning. This time, it’s from Alaska team owner and former PBA chairman Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, who wrote in with his thoughts on this blog, and an update on his team’s acquisition of Samigue Eman from San Miguel (http://firequinito.com/archives/288-The-wacky-moves-of-Alaska.html). (No, he did not mind me calling his team’s moves ‘wacky’.)
Here’s his email, in full:
Congratulations on your blog. I was recently introduced to it and spent some time reading your comments over the past couple of weeks. I must say it is refreshing to see the reporting as blunt and candid as yours is.
It might also interest you to note that SMC (http://firequinito.com/archives/277-The-SMC-League.html) has continued to harass Samigue Eman. He was summoned to the Commissioner's Office yesterday only to be surprised by a couple of SMC lawyers interrogating him. Needless to say this is unprofessional and underhanded. Apparently the PBA Excom now wants to review the "technicality" of us signing him even after the PBA approved such a transaction.
Alaska has always followed the rules and conduct ourselves with upmost integrity. The fact of the matter is SMC took the risk by placing Sam on reserve and he agreed to join us. If SMC really wanted him, why did he only play 8 games in his first year, 12 games in his second year and 0 this conference?! And what was this about a "back door" trade with Burger King only to be dealt to Ginebra eventually. Perhaps another sham trade.
I've been in this business for 24 years (longer than any team owner in the PBA) and I have to say, the conduct of the league (and certain teams) appear to be deteriorating at an alarming rate.
Good luck with your blog and remain true to your convictions.
Curiously, Fidel Mangonon reported on his Twitter account last weekend that some people connected to San Miguel bore ill will towards Eman (http://twitter.com/fmango/status/9092328878) after his abrupt transfer.
Alaska coach Tim Cone reacted to the issue by pointing out that Eman has been rotting on San Miguel’s bench the past couple of years (http://twitter.com/manilacone/status/9096590892), and that he can’t keep waiting forever (http://twitter.com/manilacone/status/9098458047) for a chance to play: “Seems to me that SMB was not that concerned about keeping him around. The young man is 27 and needs to play. How long does he wait? 22 or 23 is ‘young’ in the PBA and demands patience, but by 27 you are entering the prime of your career. Patience runs thin.”
Boy, San Miguel must have been really peeved to go after Eman. Why even bother, at this point? Talk about a dick move.
UPDATE: Mangonon reports on Twitter that PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios talked about the issue (http://twitter.com/fmango/status/9226522553) with press people this afternoon, and that he upheld Eman’s move to Alaska (http://twitter.com/fmango/status/9226546682). Barrios also said that the people who met Eman were not SMC lawyers, but PBA lawyers.
According to Mangonon’s source at Alaska, SMC just wanted to clarify (http://twitter.com/fmango/status/9226596600) if any of the PBA teams’ gentlemen’s agreements about player movements weren’t violated.
Of course, last month, after a brouhaha involving the protest of a delayed game against Talk N Text (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/182154/barrios-fines-tnt-for-wrong-uniform-but-upholds-win-over-smb), San Miguel said that they didn’t really protest, they just wanted “clarification” (http://www.pba.com.ph/topstories/talk-n-text-fined-p50000-uniform-delay-comm%E2%80%99s-office-come-new-guidelines).
Sure they did.

Now that's wacky. Uytengsu calling SMC the devil while projecting his franchise as the saint? Excuse me... I think this is a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Did Alaska act with integrity when they hatched the Bong Solomon trade to GSM in 1995? Was there a full disclosure in dealing damaged goods to Ginebra? (Solomon apparently had a detached retina. Jaemark may have been exaggerating about the legally blind part, but he wasn't kidding about the Dudut Jaworski comparison.:D)
And what about the fast one that Alaska pulled in 2005 when they cherry-picked Rich Alvarez from the near-dead Shell team? Shouldn't some people have conducted themselves with utmost integrity back then too?
Don't get me wrong. San Miguel is definitely not faultless and shares the blame for the decline of fan interest in the PBA (I say this despite being an unabashed "Batang San Miguel" who enjoyed working with this wonderful company). That said, people should be aware that some other teams who level accusations (however valid) at SMC also benefit from the PBA trade "rigodon" (or "moro-moro", if you will :D).
Hats off to Wilfred Steven Uytengsu. As the man said, he's been in the PBA business for 24 years. One doesn't survive that long without shrewdness and cunning.
Uytengsu took a shrewd gambit by taking his agenda to an unconventional blogger. The gamble went well both ways: Jaemark got his scoop, while Stevie cemented his hold on Samigue Eman with a masterful pre-emptive strike on stool pigeon Barrios.
No dick move there. :p
Barrios also said that the people who met Eman were not SMC lawyers, but PBA lawyers.
Could Uytengsu (and countless others) see the difference? :D

1994 Bong Alvarez to Sta.
The injury? I'm sure some of you oldies still remember.
Alvarez was with an Alaska teammate (Alenogenes Sasan) in a massage parlour and Alvarez got his ass cheek shot by some security guard. :D

'joaqui' moves? :D
Did Alaska act with integrity when they hatched the Bong Solomon trade to GSM in 1995? Was there a full disclosure in dealing damaged goods to Ginebra? (Solomon apparently had a detached retina. Jaemark may have been exaggerating about the legally blind part, but he wasn't kidding about the Dudut Jaworski comparison.:D)
they may have acted that unethically and deceptively.
some bgk fans that i know of still dis alaska for that one.

that's why for me trillo's trade moves goes up from smart to "magulang" and bong solomon is an amateur standout and play solid in his early alaska year

Unethical, definitely. But to me, the PBA as a league is only as good as the leaders that run it. No matter how great some players are.
If the Board refuses to enforce strict rules like hard caps or trade rules that aren't blatant jokes (involving third party circumvention), or even full disclosure rules, then it's only natural that teams will do what they have to just to protect their own business interests or even gain undue advantage at the expense of another.
In a sense, I don't blame Uytengsu the hard-nosed businessman. He's done some shady stuff but the equally shady PBA Board let him go scot-free (same goes for SMC et al.). At the end of the day, team owners will take care of business (sadly, their own only :()
Is it any surprise that the so-called "independence" of the Commissioner's Office is a complete joke?
I hasten to add that while Barrios' term is thus far the worst, some other commissioners aren't spotless too (although they are obviously less clueless than Renauld-saurus).
The Rich Alvarez case (Shell to Alaska, 2005) happened during Eala's watch while the Bong Solomon low-blow (Alaska to Ginebra, 1995) was during the late Commissioner Bernardino's term if I'm not mistaken.
PBA "fair play" went downhill post-Rudy Salud. But that decline is far better than the current nosedive.
i thought the alvarez-hawkins trade was 1993.

i thought the alvarez-hawkins trade was 1993.
hawkins started to play for alaska at the start of the 1994season so the trade happened may be early part of 1994 or during the holiday breaks of 1993.
The 1994 season started the Alaska dynasty in the 90's as they enter the finals 12times out of 15finals excluding the 1998 centennial cup from 1994 up to 1998 season.they won a total of 8 championships including the 1996 grandslam. If not for the 1998 ASIAD in bangkok, they could have won their 2nd grandslam.

Yes. That's correct.
I remember seeing Hawkins playing for Sta. Lucia alongside Jun Limpot, Gerry Esplana and Max Delantes.
And by the way, expect more trades to happen while the best-of-7 series is ongoing

CAN Air21 and Talk N Text trade players directly?
This is the interesting question surrounding the Express and the Tropang Texters after the Lina Group franchise decided to carry Air21 and drop its previous name Burger King in the coming Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference set March 21.
Last season, the Lina Group franchise decided to carry the Whopper’s name. Burger King is a quick service restaurant business, the majority of which is owned by the Lina Group of businessman/sportsman Bert Lina. The company is co-owned by several stakeholders, among them PBA Chairman and Air21 team manager Lito Alvarez, Manny V. Pangilinan and Ricky Vargas of Smart Communications and Wilson Young of Basic Holdings Corporation.
Pangilinan and Vargas are running the Talk N Text squad in the PBA.
This is why Alvarez volunteered to the board that Burger King and Talk N Text won’t trade players directly. But this coming conference, with the team now carrying the name of a company solely owned by the Lina Group, the chairman is bringing up his request to the commissioner that the restrictions of trading directly to the Tropang Texters be lifted.
Hatfield to the rescue (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=552792&publicationSubCategoryId=69)
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star) Updated February 25, 2010 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Rudy Hatfield will end almost a three-year leave from the PBA and resume playing for Barangay Ginebra in the coming Fiesta Conference starting March 21.
After losing to Alaska in a 4-0 series sweep in the recent Philippine Cup semifinals, the Kings could use a fiery rebounder like Hatfield to get back in title contention. He will be a vital piece in the puzzle that coach Joseph Uichico is consolidating for the future.
Hatfield’s agent Bill Rosmarino confirmed yesterday that the H-Bomb from the University of Michigan at Dearborn has signed a one-year contract with Ginebra and will arrive from the US late March.
“Rudy is already preparing his body for battle,” said Rosmarino. “I’m just so excited. This has been nearly three years of waiting. It will be so nice to watch, as a Hatfield fan, the new improved 110 percent version. With his new mindset, rest and heart, you can only imagine what Rudy will do on the court for Ginebra.”
Hatfield, 32, took a leave of absence from Ginebra in 2007 for personal reasons. The 6-6 power forward, whose mother is Filipina, has played six years in the PBA, averaging 13.4 points and 10.8 rebounds.
In an exclusive STAR interview, Hatfield vowed to return with a bang.
“Don’t think for one second I’m gonna walk on the floor and let anyone walk all over me,” he said. “I’m comin’ to play. I’m comin’ to wrestle. And I’m comin’ to win. There’s nothing new to expect. I don’t have any new moves. I haven’t been given some miraculous pill that has me flying out of the gym and I won’t suddenly become a pure shooter. What you will see is me diving on the floor again, running up and down like a caged animal that has just been let loose and 110 percent of tenacious intensity.””
Hatfield said he is well informed about developments in the PBA and can’t wait to play for the Kings.
“What an awesome time playing for Ginebra is going to be,” he continued. “I’ve been following the PBA since I left and I definitely know what’s going on. I remember telling Eric (Menk) about J. C. (Intal) while he was at Ateneo and saying, ‘Look at the hops on this guy.’ It looks as if he’s become more than just a leaper.”
Hatfield said he has kept in shape playing in leagues but admitted he’s not in PBA condition at the moment.
“I plan on being ready,” he went on. “The good thing is I still weigh the same as when I left so I won’t have to worry about getting rid of extra weight. You know, if anything, I’ll be in shape. Maybe not as good right away but I’ll surely be able to get up and down the floor.”
Since leaving the country, Hatfield said he has found new meaning in his life with wife Bethany and their two children Bella, 5, and Lylah, 1, embracing the Christian faith.
For about 10 days last November, Hatfield quietly came to town for missionary work with the Northridge Church of Plymouth, Michigan. He visited schools, staged puppet shows for kids, conducted basketball clinics and delivered personal testimonials. Two highlights of Hatfield’s brief visit were explaining to kids a fun way to remember the 10 commandments and providing disaster relief for typhoon Ondoy victims.
“After about a year of researching, speaking with God, receiving so many signs and just putting myself out there to believe, I was finally saved,” he said. “My old life was put to death and I was reborn. I now truly believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior, that if we believe in His death for our sins, His resurrection as ourselves being resurrected into a new life and that He is the way, truth and the life. By all means, I still sin, I still make mistakes and I have a long, painful journey to go before I’m made into the perfect image of Jesus. But at least I know I can repent and be forgiven and I focus everyday on getting closer to God.”
Hatfield said his wife and daughters will make periodic visits to Manila while he’s playing in the PBA.
“It will be a great opportunity for my daughters to see a different culture especially for Lylah (who is part Filipino),” he said. “I want my kids to see where their father spent the majority of his growing years.”
As for how long he plans to play, Hatfield said it’s up to the Lord.
“Right now, the thought is to play until God tells me it’s time to move on,” he said. “I don’t know exactly how long it will be. But what I do know is for the last three years, I’ve been trying to find a purpose for my life, wondering what God made me for. For about three years, I tried to fool myself that I wasn’t made for basketball. I do know now that God gave me a gift and maybe I’m not the most talented basketball player but he gave me something that gets the job done.”

He should be in the WWE and wrestle as a heel.:D
Back to the topic, he's going to be a heck of a problem for the teams in the coming conference. This "animal" is really intense, like Batista's beating to Cena last episode on RAW. I wish he signed for the Aces', hehe:D

I heard from the grapevine that Samigue Eman, and possibly his agent and the Alaska management might get sued for tampering a live and legally binding contract since Eman's contract hasn't expired and rescinded.
SMB might get a case here.
His agent should have done his assignment. He is paid for that.
The Alaska management might need some spanking for their incredulous and irresponsible action.
At the end of the day, a contract is a contract is a contract. And all the stipulations provided therein should be followed.

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Sonny Barrios said Alaska’s acquisition of Sam Eman is legal, downplaying San Miguel’s claim that the deal was illegal.
The Beermen questioned Alaska’s acquisition of the 6-foot-9 slotman. The Aces’ management, led by team owner Wilfred Steven Uytengsu and coach Tim Cone, in saying that San Miguel is “pressuring the player’s transfer."
But Barrios justified his claim stating that Alaska followed league rules in acquiring the services of a player placed on an unrestricted free agent list.
“Alaska’s acquisition of San Eman is legal," Barrios told GMANews.TV. “Any player that is put on an unrestricted free agent list can be picked up by any team. I do hope San Miguel now has clear understanding regarding my statement."
“Teams cannot change line up on its roster during the playoffs. The reason for this is to avoid teams which were eliminated helping teams which are still playing in the semifinals," added Barrios.
“That is why, Eman wasn’t included on San Miguel’s roster in the semis and any team can pick him up. So eventually, Alaska picked Eman," said Barrios.
“But even if Alaska had already secured the services of Eman, he cannot play for his new team because of restrictions of changing your line up in the semifinal round. We have a cut off for that."
Alaska signed Eman, whose contract with San Miguel ends in July this year, giving the Aces a towering frontline in the coming Fiesta Conference where teams will parade imports not taller than 6-foot-6.
Barrios said that Alaska has not yet furnished him a copy of the new contract offered on Eman. The Aces would most likely do that by the end of the best-of-seven finals. – GMANews.TV
