Highly unlikey :D
Cardona performance is on a slump (I wouldn't be surprised if they trade him). Whereas SOL is just starting to be one of the premiere guards in PBA. It's not really a fair deal, even if you add boat load of cash as part of the proposition.

I do feel Sol is going to the Bolts
It seems to be the trend in the PBA, the other PBA Teams would rather trade their player to a PBA team of MVP than loan their player to GILAS and still shoulder the salary of their play while he is on loan.
There are also talks that the Bolts are actually building up the right pieces so that they can negotiate a trade with BMeg which would reunite JY with RG and enable JY to play for GILAS.

@ariel_muhlach Yap to Meralco for Cardona? Again, SMC won't trade one of its best player to MVP's teams, unless they are crazy enough to do that.
By the way, Tim Cone tried to use what Purefoods used against them last season during the Philippine Cup Finals, a tall line-up. But it seems he can't weave the same magic the Giants did last season. :D

PCU-castro,espinas,sans
ADMU-fonacier(listed as injury)...that was his injury before he go to PBA
I can also remember Mark Abadia and Ronjay buenafe also play for one game for HB.
They didnt make it cause they lose their 3 chances to advance to QFinals.
They also lose to Granny Goose(JR Quinahan) for twice to beat.
This is what i can remember.

i think it has already happened before. some people say that billy mamaril's trade to air 21 was just a case of temporarily loan, agreed upon by the management of both teams involved.
and one can actually speculate that this could be the case for yancy de ocampo who was coming back and forth from air21 to tnt. this one is speculation though. billy mamaril's case was different as people already said that he would actually return to bgk even before he first played for air21.

If memory serves me right, the first time this happened was back in the early 80's when Crispa loaned a couple of players for Galerie Dominique, a lowly team owned by former Senator Nikki Coseteng. Tito Varela was loaned by the Redmanizers to the Artistas simply because Coseteng couldn't afford to pay the salary of her players. In this case, Crispa shouldered the expense.
I'm not sure but I think this is the same setup as the Sunday Salvacion case. Ginebra continues to pay for the salary of Salvacion but he also gets to play for Barako. Talk & Text has also loaned out some players like Gilbert Lao to Barako - again, the reason being the Chuas not capable of paying for the salaries of these players.
You might ask why this is happening. I think the PBA agreed to this setup to ensure that the league continues to have ten teams and make Barako have a complete 14-man lineup in their team. I'm not saying it's the correct move, but then, nothing in the PBA constitution prohibits that from happening. Similarly, it's easier to maintain an existing team by lending some players than looking for another franchise to take over the said team. Pragmatism, more than being correct, may have triggered the PBA to allow this to occur.

with these trade between LORDY TUGADE and SUNDAY SALVACION means that the BARAKO BULL is the PBA's farm team of richer companies.only this season they traded away their prized rookie HANS THIELE for DENNIS DAA and I DON'T BE SURPRISED if MARK ISIP will be traded away too.

when a player is traded, his rights is transferred permanently to the receiving team as what is practiced worldwide but "unique" things happen in the PBA. The "temporary loan" of Billy Mamaril to Air21 was exposed after it was revealed that his trade to Air21 towards the end of last season's PBA Fiesta Conference in exchange in exchange for Mike Cortez has previous agreement attached to it in which Air21 has to give back Mamaril to Barangay Ginebra this new PBA season. Even Coach Yeng Guiao was caught off-guard as it was former Manager Lito Alvarez who had forged the agreement with the San Miguel Management that the transfer of Mamaril is temporarily and as compensation for agreeing to such an arrangement Air21 is to get a future draft pick of Ginebra.

based on what happened to the Billy Mamaril case, it seems that particular restriction is no longer being followed by the teams. Mamaril played only eight games with the Express in the last Conference of last season then before the start of the new season, Air21 gave him back to Ginebra. I think that agreement was in secret and is known only at top level management as Coach Guiao did not know about it and was caught off-guard as he was preparing for the new season with Billy as a key component of his rotation. Even Mamaril was not aware that his trade was only temporary and that he'll go back to the Barangay, I do remember Mamaril was very bitter and vocal that Ginebra traded him away and he was instrumental in the 98-97 win by Air21 over Ginebra that to boosted Express' wildcard bid in the PBA Fiesta Conference.

Still I see good things when some teams agree to be a destination of loaned players, although for some its not its nice to see teams made so that players who are known to be good strut their stuff

Anthony,
For what I know, the period of one year is not based on calendar year but by season year. Which meant that when Billy Mamaril was "loaned" to Air 21 last season, the pact ceased when the new season unfolded last October. I write this not as a form of agreement to the arrangement as this is another form of "circumventing" the rules to please both parties involved. Imagine if Mamaril was traded to Air 21 one day before the team's elimination - and then the Express lost. And then Mamaril goes back to Ginebra the succeeding season, in effect, Mamaril was loaned to Air 21 for just one game...
Air 21, though, got compensated as I believe they were also able to latch upon a future first round pick of Ginebra. I think the loan was consummated because it would provide the short-term requirements of the Express brought about by the loss of Cortez.

DT,
Yes, there's a rule on this. I believe this rule dates back at the start of the decade. Sadly, whoever created this rule may be shaking his head now as this has been subject yet to another wave of circumvention.
I don't know how this rule can be interpreted differently. It states that a player cannot be traded back to his former team for one year. One year stipulates calendar year. It didn't say one season. Otherwise, the author of this rule would have clearly stipulated it as such.

Well yeah as with anything--- even in the NBA--- circumvention of rules is one skill Basketball GM's should have. :) (Just saying, nothing new here :D)

The Restricted Trade List (RTL) would have been ideal had they decided to put some teeth into this. Similar to this "loan" arrangement, the RTL also had its share of circumvention as it was decided that a player in the RTL may actually be removed anytime when the team decides to have someone else placed there. Case in point was Enrico Villanueva, who was initially in the RTL of Red Bull before team management decided to replace him with Mick Pennisi so that they can trade him to another team. The absence of any solid foundation in these rules would simply become a mockery for PBA team owners.
The key here is a strong and independent-minded Commissioner. The Commissioner decides on the basis of what's good for the league, and not what's good for the owners. With that in mind, a Commissioner can simply overrule any unusual arrangements made by the team owners when they try dealing players with each other. I'm hoping Chito Salud would be that man.

Good recall. I remember that deal on Fran between TNT and the then FedEx team. I'm not sure if Bernardino was still at the helm or Eala has taken over though.
But this would have been a very interesting scenario. Had Fran been with FedEx for a short period of time and it fell on a different season and the PBA nixed this arrangement, then Sonny Barrios would and should have done the same thing - owing to this precedent. However, if Fran was being returned to TNT on the same season he was secured by the Express, then in principle, there would have been no precedent and the league based its recent decisions on Mamaril, etc. through its interpretation without any jurisprudence.

no team has the first overall pick yet...it's based on their record the previous season through a points system...
right now, barako and powerade has the best chance of securing that #1 pick (unless they traded their picks already)...

Solar TV giving up PBA coverage
Solar Sports is looking for a TV network that is willing to take over coverage of the PBA games in the next two conferences of the on-going 2010-2011 season following a reported decision by Solar TV to totally reformat its programming on RPN 9.
The Inquirer learned that Solar TV is also planning to move its NBA and boxing shows out of Channel 9 but whether or not these shows will be offered to other networks is unclear at this time.
Sources said Solar Sports is looking for a third party to take over the coverage of the PBA’s games and provide the airtime for the telecast of the games on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and out-of-town games on Saturdays.
Solar Sports executives headed by CEO Peter Chanliong are expected to hold discussions with ABS-CBN on Thursday followed by meetings with GMA 7 and ABC 5.
However, the Lopez network, which currently telecasts both the UAAP and NCAA games, is unlikely to enter into any agreement to assume the coverage for the remaining two PBA conferences unless Solar also turns over its optional rights at the end of the current franchise to ABS-CBN.
The Lopez network is unlikely to accept a takeover unless the PBA board of governors guarantees ABS-CBN a longer term contract which would make an investment in the pro league coverage viable and worthwhile.
Commissioner Chito Salud said “no formal notice has been received by the PBA office regarding this matter,” adding “that in any event the primary concern of the board is to make sure that the PBA games will continue to be aired for the rest of the contract of Solar.”
The franchise fee for the 2010-11 season amounts to P170 million.
It looks like solar sports is having a hard time marketing the PBA...

PBA EX-COM MEETS ON PLANNED SOLAR TRANSFER
Posted on 02 December 2010
The PBA Ex-Com headed by chairman Rene Pardo was scheduled to meet yesterday with Commissioner Chito Salud to discuss the plan of Solar Sports to transfer the production and telecast of the pro league games to another network.
Pardo told the Inquirer that should ABS-CBN “agree to cover it, that’s not a problem. But it must be on a free channel. The reason we declined ABS was because they were offering Studio 23” which Pardo claimed had the reach only in Metro Manila not nationwide compared to Solar TV’s RPN 9.
However, that assumption based on a survey conducted by a third party advertising agency has since been seriously questioned.
Pardo revealed that when they were discussing the offer of ABS-CBN prior to the current contract which was awarded to Solar Sports, the PBA was interested because of the cross-promotions for which the network is well known. “But what attracted me and appealed to me was the fact that they were going to air the finals on Channel 2. That’s good because they have a lot of viewership” added Prado.
When informed of the plan of Solar to talk to ABS-CBN first before discussing the possibilities with GMA 7 and ABC 5 management officials, the PBA chairman said he believes that GMA “will not give us GMA 7. They would offer QTV .”
Pardo indicated that they planned to “sit down and discuss our options and at the same time look at the contract between Solar and the PBA because that is covered by a bond.”
The Inquirer understands that Solar has made it clear it would honor its contractual obligations and pay the franchise fee for the 2010-2011 season which amounts to P170 million.
The plan to turnover the PBA production and telecast to any of the networks or groups willing and able to handle the next two conferences is tied up with the Solar TV plan to reformat Channel 9 which would also entail moving the telecast of the popular NBA games and even the high rating boxing shows on the network.
Some PBA board members have noticed that Solar hasn’t been able to even secure a conference sponsor unlike in past years and that the TV load was minimal which meant that it was a losing proposition for Solar Sports.
Solar Sports CEO Peter Chanliong was scheduled to meet with ABS-CBN management officials yesterday to discuss their plans but there was no word on what transpired during the meeting.. insidesports.ph

Valenzuela to Meralco? (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/sports/4698-valenzuela-to-meralco)
Wednesday, 08 December 2010 19:32 Joel Orellana
JUNTHY Valenzuela may soon be back in action but in a Meralco Bolts uniform.
The BusinessMirror learned on Wednesday that the former Barangay Ginebra defensive guard just needs a clearance from a doctor to be able to play again in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) after battling a variety of injuries the past two years.
And Meralco was the first ball club to show interest in acquiring the 31-year-old Cebuano.
Meralco, the BusinessMirror learned, is just waiting for Valenzuela’s medical clearance from Dr. Raul Canlas before he will be offered a contract perhaps this Friday.
The six-foot-two Valenzuela, who spent his first eight seasons with the Barako Bull franchise, played two uneventful years with the Kings and hardly contributed to the team’s campaign due to various injuries.
Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio told the BusinessMirror that there are no formal talks yet between the team and the handlers of Valenzuela but he welcomes all the help he can get as they try to boost their chances in the quarterfinal round.
“Why not? We are always open to players who still have it and help our neophyte franchise. However, with players coming off injuries, they must be in shape and pass the stress and injury test,” the reigning Coach of the Year said.
Valenzuela orginally planned to go back to Barako Bull (formerly Red Bull) but Meralco told his handlers that the Bolts are interested.
Valenzuela was acquired by Ginebra from Red Bull in exchange for the former’s 2009 second-round selection and 2010 first-round pick. The Bolts battled B-MEG Debry Ace on Wednesday night at the Araneta Colisuem.

o boost its line up for the coming PBA Philippine Cup playoffs, newcomer Meralco has obtained the rights of Mark Isip and Reed Juntilla in a five-player deal with Barako Bull.
The trade was confirmed on Monday by Meralco team manager Virgil Villavicencio who submitted the deal proposal to the PBA Commissioner’s Office.
In exchange for Isip and Juntilla, Barako Bull, which is on the rebuilding process, will get back-up playmaker Pong Escobal and rookies Khazim Mirza and Ford Arao.
The trade has yet to be finalized pending the approval from PBA Commissioner Angelico “Chito” Salud, but Villavicencio said he sees no problem with the deal.
If the deal gets the nod of the league today, Juntilla and Isip will be available for Meralco’s final game in the elimination phase against Rain or Shine tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.
Meralco (6-7) and Rain or Shine (5-8) are in dire need of victories as they hope to avoid No. 7 and 8 spots after the eliminations.
Teams landing on those spots will be pitted against the top two teams – Talk N’ Text and San Miguel – which carry twice-to-beat advantages in the quarterfinals.
The 6-foot-5 Isip and the 6-foot-2 Juntilla are mainstays of Barako Bull, which missed the quarterfinal playoff after finishing the elimination round with a 3-11 record.

Fate of Gilas up in PBA-SBP summit

source: Waylon Galvez | mb.com.ph
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) will hold a summit in the months to come to strengthen the preparations of the Smart–Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA-Asia Championship next year, the qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics.
SBP executive director Noli Eala revealed the plan on Tuesday in the PSA Forum, saying he has already communicated with PBA Commissioner Chito Salud about the meet.
“We’re planning of a summit with the PBA that will discuss how we can strengthen the national team,” Eala said at the Forum held at the Shakey's Restaurant in U.N. Avenue in Manila. “Lahat tayo ang gusto is manalo sa FIBA-Asia.”
The professional league has agreed to loan three players – Asi Taulava, Sol Mercado and Kelly Williams – to the national team in the previous Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
The Nationals, however, fell short landing a medal and slipped to sixth – its worst finish in recent years.
Smart-Gilas Serbian coach Rajko Toroman is hopeful Marcus Douthit’s papers for naturalization can be settled as soon as possible so he can join the team in the FIBA tourney.

One thing for sure is that it won't be pure PBA in the near future for obvious reasons. PBA loan a la the recent Asian Games will probably the most likely scenario. 3 to 5 players to strengthen the team.

Yeah, this to me has always been the best option given present-day realities and constraints: PBA loans a few tools full-time (none of that energy-sapping parallel practice sh*t, please) to the greenhorn program.
I have modest expectations for this summit. Perhaps just an MoA between the SBP and PBA, enough to get the above ideas on paper where both parties can sign on the dotted line.
Worth noting Eala said he communicated to Salud about meeting up with him. Doing that before firing off the presscon is hopefully a good sign.
I don't miss the old routine of "sending feelers via press release". That's one drill that really screws up SBP-PBA relations.

based from past comments by Commissioner Salud and the PBA Board loaning of 3 PBA players would not be a problem, let's see after the summit if the PBA would be ameanable to increase the number of players to be loaned.
But this is what I was saying all this time, the SBP should have a dialogue with the PBA and actually with all the basketball stakeholders with regards to the loaning of players. With this they should devise a system and rules on how it should be done. Everything should be done in a formal manner or even business like as after-all lets be frank about the matter, the PBA teams, non-PBA basketball teams and the schools are actually more concerned about 'business matters' these days.

Nardy,
I have a suggestion thats a win-win situation for both the national team and the PBA.
Basically, those Gilas players who will get little minutes during important tournaments(e.g. Slaughter in fba-asia 2011) will be sent for toughening in a PBA team, e.g. Alaska. In return, Alaska will loan Sonny Thoss to Gilas who will back-up Taulava
For minor or practice tournaments, slaughter will go back to Gilas and Thoss back to Alaska.
The reason for this is that its very difficult for Alaska to loan Thoss and in return they dont have a susbstitute center.
After several years of toughening, Slaughter will probably become the starting center for Gilas by , say 2013-2014, . by that time, Taulava might be retired already from PBA, and Slaugther will already be in the PBA. so in 2013 and up, Gilas has to find a subsititute amateur center to loan to a PBA team to borrow Slaughter so for example, in 2013-2014, Gilas will send Van Opstal to the PBA team for toughening and in return, the PBA team will lend Slaughter to Gilas., and so on
The other alternative is for PBA teams to loan players with no substitute replacements just like in the past with the Powerade PBA national team, but this will leave holes in the PBA lineups. This will be unacceptable or difficult for PBA business to continue or sustain in the long-term so I was just being realistic or practical.
the big question though is whether Thoss is a better choice for back-up center on the Gilas national team ? or whether Slaughter is still the best substitute center to Taulava? . How about on the power forward or tall guard positions ? I'm sure there's lots of PBA players who can be switched with the current Gilas forwards or guards.
Then there is Douhit - is it best to assign Douhit at center or power forward position ? Can Kraken Fajardo be a good power forward substitute coming off the bench ? Kelly Williams will no doubt take one of the Forward slots - no question about that.
As for Barroca, its an overwhelming consensus in this forum that he will have to go. Will Banchero replace him since Banchero will graduate in May ? If Banchero joins in May, is that enough time for him to learn the point guard chores on Gilas ? will Banchero's monster stats in the American NCAA carry over in FIBA tournaments? or are we better of being safe by borrowing a FIBA veteran like Alapag ? One way of another, Banchero will no doubt be part of the Gilas pool since he will be needed at the very least in the Gilas team for 2012 and up......or should Gilas borrow a tall guard like Norwood, or Dillinger to shut down the opposing team's top perimeter shooter ?
based from past comments by Commissioner Salud and the PBA Board loaning of 3 PBA players would not be a problem, let's see after the summit if the PBA would be ameanable to increase the number of players to be loaned.

Lending players is not enough. These PBA players should play with the Gilas core for a longer time to achieve the chemistry. You can call more sets if all your players memorize the playbook.

Lending players is not enough. These PBA players should play with the Gilas core for a longer time to achieve the chemistry. You can call more sets if all your players memorize the playbook.
Which is why it won't happen. What's in it for the PBA/PBA teams if they loan them long-term?

they should apply what is done in other countries when they loan players to other teams that is there is a sort of Rental Fee paid by the borrowing team to the loaning team in order to compensate for the time the player is not with the mother team plus a corresponding disability insurance in case of injury.
This should be taken-up in the planned SBP-PBA Summit.

My only hope is that the present patron would continue supporting the NT. He has 3 teams in the PBA. Obviously, they are now making moves to make all 3 teams talent laden with having the best players through trades and the draft. So, if the other PBA owners won't lend players then his 3 teams can do. SMART's name is on the line here. I am not expecting the full cooperation of all the PBA teams in terms of lending.
Many might disagree with me, but the Gilas core is fine. They are on track. But they won't peak come next year. As I have said many PBA superstars today peaked at their 4th or 5th season. So, continuity is the key.

Here's a blind item that should pique one's interest:
A team owner (TO) is extremely vocal about his sentiments regarding certain teams going beyond the salary cap and violating the league rules in order to secure the best players available. Noticeably though, in the past couple of weeks, he has been very silent about the issue. What happened?
Turned out to be that manager (TM 1) of the team/s being referred to by the TO had a chat with the owner's team manager (TM 2). In disgust, the TM 1 asked his counterpart TM2 to have his boss (TO) shut up or else...
What was the or else all about? TM threatened to spill the beans on one of the marquee players (MP) that he acquired from the team of the TO. Turned out to be that the said MP presented another contract to the TM1 that indicated several sweeteners in the financial package that wasn't included in the player's contract (UPC). Said sweeteners had to be absorbed by TM 1 after the trade was consummated and when the MP presented this to TM1.
TM 2 relented and assured TM1 that he'll talk to his boss (TO) to quiet down.

easy. my guesses:
team owner = uytengsu
marquee player = miller
managers = wacky, non (he's a firebrand, too)
remember that at one point, alaska had to cajole miller re: trade rumors after they lost to TNT in the 2009 Philippine Cup finals.

Powerade, after a disappointing stint in the PBA Philippine Cup, has done its import-shopping in the holidays and is set to bring in Euro League veteran Titus Ivory for the next conference.
Listed at 6-foot-4, Ivory has a wealth of experience in the very physical Euro League and could well turn out to be the banger that the Tigers need even if he has played the point or shooting guard spots his whole career.

Powerade needs a Local big man. Reyes (a natural 3-4) Playing center and an old espino is not enough. Heck, even a semi retired shooting guard (antonio) plays PF. There's too much role players and guards. Maybe they should fix some of those problems first before creating a press release for hiring a euroleague veteran.
David and Anthony are the only bright spots for this team.

Compared to the All-Flip conference? Probably so. But heck, it could attract a few fans too especially if one way or the other we get prolific scorers (a la Tony Harris, Lamont Strothers, etc) for imports. So yeah, it's a double-edged sword.

I''ll go for a 6'10 imports than watching a Tony Harris type of import..Yes it is a bit more exciting to watch a 6'5 do it all import who can score 50 pts a game:eek: but what the PBA need is to hire a 6'10 or above import. So i guess it's a matter of taste. Obviously, speedy and high-scoring imports are more exciting and it appeals to the Filipino fan. And as mentioned many times, it's really just tough getting high-quality imports (of any size) because of money...

Baculi, 3 others head Express coach list

Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi, Meralco assistant coach Boyet Fernandez, and former PBA mentors Leo Austria and Bong Ramos are in the shortlist of candidates for the Air21 Express head coaching post.
Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio confirmed this to GMANews.TV in a telephone interview.
“Junel, Leo, Boyet and Bong are included in our shortlist of candidates," said Gregorio, who is running the team’s practices together with assistant mentor Sandy Arespacochaga. “But we have to evaluate the candidates carefully."
Baculi, who only last season fulfilled his dream of becoming a PBA coach when he was appointed as bench tactician of Barako Bull in lieu of Leo Isaac, has an existing contract with the Energy Boosters until end of February.
The Energy Boosters have yet to meet at this time regarding their plan for the next conference, which starts next month.
“There was no call from the management at this time. The team is waiting, so we can plan the team’s direction next conference," said Baculi, also the athletic director of National University in the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines.
Fernandez, who led the Sta. Lucia Realtors to the Philippine Cup crown in the 2007-2008 PBA season, is another strong candidate. The former Coach of the Year awardee also spent several games coaching the University of the Philippines Maroons as a substitute for Aboy Castro in the UAAP last season.
Austria, former coach of the Shell Turbochargers and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA, met with the Express management Wednesday, according to Gregorio.
The 1985 Rookie of the Year awardee is also the coach of the Adamson University Falcons, a team which made it all the way to the semifinal round in the UAAP last season and finished runner-up to the Ateneo Eagles in the Champion’s League several months ago.
Ramos, a former head coach of the Express, is currently the mentor of the Brunei Barracudas in the ongoing Asean Basketball
League. With his team already out of the running, the many-time assistant mentor of the Philippine men’s basketball team in the Southeast Asian Games is seriously considering a coaching comeback in the PBA.
The head coaching job in the Express camp became vacant when Yeng Guiao, the team’s mentor for two seasons, opted to move to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters a few days ago.
But it’s not only the head coaching post which was vacated. Guiao brought with him long-time deputy Rhoel Nadurata, leaving a big vacuum on the Express’ bench.
“That means we will be more active helping out, both in practices and game situations," added Gregorio, whose brother Ryan is a three-time PBA champion coach and now mentor of the Meralco Bolts. - KY, GMANews.TV

Air 21 officials constantly defend their trade actions, saying that this is not only cost-beneficial for them, it also guarantees that they remain in the headlines, thereby getting media exposure from these transactions.
I've no problem with this if the franchise has already won a PBA title. Even for just one PBA title, I'd like to think that what they have done is exceptional - since they've proven so many things:
1. You don't need to have all the marquee players in your team to win a title.
2. You get a lot of fan support because your nucleus' average age is probably the youngest.
3. You get exposure not only for the transactions but for winning games and titles.
The problem is they haven't won a title yet, after more than 8 seasons in the PBA. You wonder therefore - what would have happened to this franchise had they kept the nucleus of their players that suited up for them - say two seasons ago? When they had the likes of Arwind Santos, Ranidel De Ocampo, and Gary David in their team? These three are already marquee players for their present teams - SMB, TNT and Powerade, respectively. And that was just two seasons ago when Air 21 came closest to a title, losing by a hairline to Barangay Ginebra in the 2008 Fiesta Conference.
Going farther, this team had the chance to suit up top players of other teams - these include Jay Washington, Mac Cardona, Marc Pingris, Mike Cortez, JC Intal, Ronald Tubid, Ren Ren Ritualo and Alex Cabagnot. I won't speculate on what would've happened to the team had all these players got to suit up for Air 21 simultaneously because that's impossible - as these players were dealt with for other players or draft picks that led them to the franchise. But it only goes to prove that the Express would have been a championship-caliber team as early as 2006 had they taken a totally different direction.
Perhaps, they would argue that if they had retained these players, they wouldn't have enough money to pay for all of them. There may be basis for such - Red / Barako Bull is in the same boat anyway, probably worse. But at least, Barako management doesn't go around convincing fans that what they're doing is a sound marketing ploy. Air 21 rationalizes their actions by telling us of different benefits they've generated from making such transactions - outside of winning PBA championships.
So the question is: why are they in the PBA in the first place?
Air21 upbeat in moving forward

Leo Austria and Junel Baculi
| Zoom
MANILA, Philippines - Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio said yesterday the Express is looking forward to opening a new chapter in its PBA history with four coaches under consideration to replace Yeng Guiao and a bright outlook in the quest for a championship.
Gregorio said two candidates, Leo Austria and Junel Baculi, have been interviewed so far. Another nominee Boyet Fernandez is not likely to quit as Meralco assistant coach. And a fourth possibility Bong Ramos is still in Brunei coaching the Barracudas in the Asean Basketball League.
“We hope to sign up a new coach in two or three weeks,” said Gregorio. “At the same time, we’re evaluating our options for an import. We’re seriously considering to bring back Leroy Hickerson. We know he measured 6-4 1/2 standing when he played for us last season but we understand from his agent that he’s definitely 6-4 if we measure him lying down. We’ll check if the PBA allows a remeasurement of a returning import. We’re scheduled to sit down with agent Cheryl Reyes who has two or three other options for us to study.”
Last Wednesday, Guiao went to the Air21 practice at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong and spoke to the players in an emotional 15-minute goodbye. “We owe a lot to coach Yeng,” said Gregorio. “It was classy of coach Yeng to visit us at practice. He reminded the players to stay disciplined, that it’s important to stay disciplined even in life after basketball. He mentioned that since the basketball community is small, we should build, not burn, bridges. Coach Yeng shared a lot of words of wisdom.”
Gregorio described Guiao’s departure as a mutual parting of ways.
“Coach Yeng accidentally bumped into Mr. (Raymond) Yu at the lobby of a hotel during the Christmas break and was asked about his contract,” said Gregorio. “At first, we thought his contract wouldn’t expire until Jan. 31 but we later learned it had expired Dec. 31. We met in the first week of January and came up with a win-win solution. It happened at a good time. Coach Yeng was given a good offer by Rain Or Shine and we were in the process of evaluating our team performance in the last four conferences. We were at the point of considering a new direction for our franchise.”
Gregorio said if no replacement is made for Guiao before the second conference opens in mid-February, he wouldn’t mind sitting on the hot seat. He has coached in the PBL and Liga Pilipinas and recently served in coach Rajko Toroman’s staff with Smart Gilas. At the moment, Gregorio is both Air21 interim coach and team manager.
“I’ve been running the team practices the last two weeks and the response has been very positive from the players,” he said. “’We’re definitely going for the semifinals in the next conference. We’re taking it a step at a time coming from making it to the quarterfinals. (Team owner) Mr. (Bert) Lina and (Air21 governor) Johann (Ramos) want to keep our team intact for a long period of time. We’re holding off on trades to retain our young core. We’ve had several offers for trades but we’re determined to build our team around our nucleus.”
Gregorio said he’s been encouraged by fans to apply as coach but at the moment, that’s not on his mind. “We’re going through a selection process,” he said. “If I’m invited by management, of course, I’d be interested to take on the job. It’s part of my personal dream to coach in the PBA – imagine going up against my brother Ryan and the other great coaches. But that’s not my priority. Our goal is to make our team competitive for a championship. We want to be a running team, like Air21 is known to deliver fast.”
In the last four conferences, the Air21 franchise has posted a combined record of 30-48. The team finished third in the 2008-09 Fiesta Conference with a 14-11 record but has since been eliminated in the first game of the last three wildcards. This conference, Air21 was booted out by San Miguel Beer, 97-75, in the wildcards and finished with a 6-9 record.
“We’re moving on and we’re all very excited about the future,” he said. “We’ve got three solid rookies in Rabeh (Al-Hussaini), Noy (Baclao) and Rey (Guevarra). We’ve got a relatively young team and our veteran players are leaders on the court.”
Last Saturday, Air21 engaged Smart Gilas in an exhibition game and lost a 107-88 decision at the Reyes Gym. Wynne Arboleda, Ronjay Buenafe, Al-Hussaini and Wesley Gonzales led the Express charge.

Smart Gilas still has it.. Though it's a practice game.. We'll see more of these games if they play in the PBA next conf.. More competitive to say the least.. Gilas, if ever, should be allowed to win the title..

We don't know the circumstances that prevailed in the exhibition game between SMART-Gilas but the most likely scenario is that SMART-Gilas fielded in Marcus Douthit while Air 21 still didn't have an import to boast of and played all filipino. Sadly though, this may not be the most accurate gauge of the real strength of the national team, even if it was at the expense of a bonafide PBA team.
It's obviously easier now to have these two play against each other in exhibition games as Yeng Guiao is not anymore part of Air 21. Note that Allan Gregorio, the interim coach of the Express, is also an assistant of Rajko Toroman with the national team. So despite all the hullaballoo created in their last PBA game that saw Wynne Arboleda punching a fan at ringside, the tension obviously has eased up significantly with Guiao's departure. And a more "cooperative" Express team is now willing to play exhibition games against the national team.
Similarly, Air 21 isn't exactly the best PBA team around. It would be nice to see the national team go up against TNT as they often do in scrimmages just to assess how good they are already. If they can compete against the Tropang Texters, and if they actually beat them with an import reinforcing the pro team, then it would be interesting. This would also give us a preview if SMART-Gilas is capable of replicating the feat of the Northern Cement team in the 1985 Reinforced when it won the title at the expense of Manila Beer, 4-0.

PBA may handle own TV broadcast
By Nelson Beltran
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Basketball Association is now looking at the prospect of doing the TV coverage itself of its games.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud said they will take up the matter during the PBA board meeting next week.
“If there’s no formal offer from any network, we’ll take the option of producing the games ourselves,” said Salud.
“We can’t leave ourselves at the mercy of the networks. If there’s no bidders, we’ll do the coverage,” Salud added.
The league commissioner told The STAR there’s a block in the board that’s been pushing for this for some time now.
Solar Sports is the PBA’s current exclusive TV coveror. Their contract expires at the end of the season, and Solar has informed the PBA that it’s not seeking contract renewal.
“The PBA itself being the producer and coveror of its games may be a better proposition. We think it’s doable,” said PBA media bureau chief Willy Marcial.
“In such a case, the PBA has full control of in-venue and TV advertisings. In the present set-up, we’re only in control of the in-venue ads,” said Marcial.
TV is another huge source of income for the league aside from gate receipts.
The PBA would have earned around P.5 billion by the end of its 2008-2011 contract with Solar Sports.

Cabahug in Air21's sights

With crack guard Ronnie Matias recuperating from knee surgery and expected to sit out the coming PBA second conference, Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio said the other day the Express is considering to sign up free agent Patrick Cabahug.
Matias tore his ACL in a game against San Miguel Beer in the Philippine Cup eliminations last Nov. 26 and has since been out of commission. He won’t be back for another four months. Depending on his rehab progress, Matias might be reactivated in time for the start of the playoffs in the third conference.
“We’re not rushing Ronnie,” said Gregorio, the Express interim coach. “He’s doing therapy now. His injury is serious, the kind that a recurrence could be the end of his career. That’s why we want to make sure Ronnie is 100 percent ready to play when the time comes.”
Gregorio said Cabahug is an option to fill in for Matias. He’s now playing for the Kuala Lumpur Dragons as an import in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) which is close to ending its second season. Cabahug is averaging 13.4 points for the Dragons. Last Jan. 5, he hit 25 points, including 6-of-11 triples, against Singapore.
Cabahug, who turns 27 this Sunday, applied for the PBA draft in 2008 but wasn’t picked. That was the year when Gabe Norwood, Jared Dillinger, Jason Castro, Rob Reyes, Sol Mercado, Mark Borboran, Beau Belga, Bon-Bon Custodio, Larry Rodriguez and Kelvin Gregorio were selected in the first round, in that order. Cabahug hopes to join Mark Yee, Lawrence Bonus and Nat Cruz as that year’s undrafted cagers who went on to play in the PBA just the same.
The sweet-shooting Cabahug earned his spurs at the University of Visayas and Adamson University. In 2007, he played for the Philippine team that won the gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games. A former UAAP scoring champion, Cabahug was a Toyota Otis standout in the PBL and also starred for Misamis Oriental in the Tournament of the Philippines. His uncle Elmer or Boy Cabahug played nine PBA seasons from 1989 to 1997.
* * *
Air21 has been a refuge for undrafted players like Josh Urbiztondo, Erick Rodriguez and Lou Gatumbato. If Cabahug signs up, expect him to go all out in trying to prove he belongs in the pros.
Gatumbato applied for the 2004 draft but didn’t make his first PBA appearance until last December. He played four games for the Express, taking over from Marcy Arellano who was out with a stress fracture in the leg. In one outing, Sweet Lou tallied 12 points.
“When I coached Pampanga in Liga, Lou played for Taguig and I saw he could play in the PBA,” said Gregorio. “He’s now 31 but he’s not over the hill. He plays with a lot of poise. Whether we’ll keep him in the active list or as a practice player depends on many things. We have to balance our lineup. With Lou, we have a match-up problem at point guard when we play a team like San Miguel Beer with a big guy like Denok Miranda.”
Gregorio said Arellano went through therapy for two months and should be ready to play. “His stress fracture isn’t like Yao Ming’s,” said Gregorio.
“Marcy’s our J. V. Casio and Olsen Racela. As for Josh, we want him to be a better finisher on the break. Right now, he’s more of a spot up shooter. He’s working very hard to improve his game. He took his Christmas break in the US but came back early this month to train on his own.”
* * *
Gregorio said he couldn’t be happier with Air21’s three rookies – Noy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra. “Noy is a prospect for any team, a shot-blocker and tough defender,” he went on. “Rey is like J. C. Intal. We want him to be more self-confident, to shoot without hesitation like he used to with Smart Gilas. Rabeh is challenging himself to dominate inside. We want him to change shots, to control the boards and to improve his passing. We want Rabeh to play tougher defense, to be a factor in blocking shots and rebounding. When we’re in the fourth quarter and Rabeh still has no fouls, you wonder how hard he’s defending because he’s our last line of defense.”
Baclao, known as Mr. Swat, is the league leader in blocked shots with a 2.5 clip. Al-Hussaini is a shoo-in for Rookie of the Year honors, averaging 17.5 points and 8.9 rebounds in his first pro conference.
Gregorio said he has high hopes for J. R. Quinahan. “He’s only 26, he’s 6-5 and he’s got a soft touch,” he continued. “J. R. can be like Ali Peek. He can dominate inside. He’s got long arms.”
As for Wynne Arboleda, Gregorio said the “Snatcher” is Air21’s leader on the court. “He’s Captain Wynne,” added Gregorio. “He has experience. He matches up well against anybody and makes you feel pressure on defense. He’s hard-nosed. He plays hard and doesn’t mind physical contact.”
Then, there’s Air21’s go-to guy Ronjay Buenafe who shot .414 from three-point range and averaged 17.1 points this conference. Also in the Express roster are Wesley Gonzales, Carlo Sharma and Leo Najorda.
By the first week of February, Gregorio said Air21 team owner Bert Lina and PBA governor Johann Ramos will have decided on a new coach to succeed Yeng Guiao. The Express’ import will have also been named.

Geraldo "Bong" Ramos will get his second tour of duty as a Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) coach after being named as the new mentor of the Air21 Express.
Air21 board governor Johann Ramos confirmed the news to GMANews.TV on Wednesday, saying the returning coach has just agreed in principle to handle the team anew.
Ramos was the coach of the last FedEx Express squad in the 2004-2005 season before the franchise changed its name to Air21. He was taken in as a replacement for veteran bench tactician Joe Lipa, who handled the squad in the Philippine Cup but decided to step down after the conference.

A former Coach of the Year in the Indonesian Basketball League, Ramos will succeed multi-titled mentor Yeng Guiao, who has moved to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters as their new coach.
"I met him today (Wednesday) and we have agreed in principle. He is going to sign the contract tomorrow (Thursday)," said Ramos about the former Brunei Barracudas coach, who just returned home Monday after a stint in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
Asked about his expectations from the incoming coach, the newly-appointed board governor said that team owner Bert Lina wants to maintain the franchise’s philosophy of having a run-and-gun squad.
"Mr. Lina ordered us to bring that old spirit back, for a run-and-gun style of play, as well as continue implementing the 12-man rotation to give other players the confidence they need," said Ramos, who took the post vacated by Lito Alvarez, the company's former president and now head of the Bureau of Customs.
Ramos, who also served as an assistant coach for Barangay Ginebra and Talk 'N Text, was chosen among a list of candidates that included Junel Baculi, Leo Austria, Boyet Fernandez and team manager Allan Gregorio.
An assistant coach is also expected to join the returning mentor on the Express' bench. Ramos is expected to lead the team’s practice beginning Friday, where he will be introduced as the squad’s official head coach.
"Coach Bong wants to bring in one assistant. The only assistant coach we have on the team right now is Sandy Arespacochaga. But we are also looking at adding a veteran mentor who will help our coaching staff and give inputs to our head coach," said the team executive. - JVP, KY, GMANews.TV

PBA board member: Barako Bull to take leave of absence
By Nelson Beltran (philstar.com) Updated January 20, 2011 10:20 AM
MANILA, Philippines – Barako Bull has reportedly expressed willingness to take a leave of absence in the PBA's second conference to allow Smart Gilas take its place and use the tourney as training ground for the coming Fiba-Asia championship.
“I’ve heard that. If that’s the case (then) maybe the PBA should approve Smart Gilas’ request,” said PBA board member and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas vice chairman Ricky Vargas.
The SBP wrote the PBA a letter last Friday requesting that the national team be allowed to play as guest team in the second conference.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud has written back with the members of the board furnished copies, saying accommodating an 11th team would disrupt not just the conference but the entire season.
“Yes, they've said the conference and the season were designed for only 10 teams. But now that there’s a team willing to sacrifice for the country, maybe the request can be accommodated,” said Vargas.
“Off hand, to me, it’s hard. Allowing them to play will disrupt our schedule. It will prolong the season,” PBA commissioner Chito Salud earlier said.
“The second conference and the whole year are designed to cater 10 teams. An addition of an 11th team will result to rescheduling of games and rescheduling of venues,” Salud also said.
“If we add them, we prolong the season. We may only have a week rest for next season. It’s a pity to our players,” Salud added.
The league commissioner, however, said he didn’t say no.
“It’s not within my purview. I will bring it up to the board,” said Salud.
Smart Gilas is bracing for the 2011 Fiba-Asia championship, which serves as the qualifying tourney for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Smart Gilas in lieu of Barako Bull in the Philippine Basketball Association second conference?
This may become a reality once the PBA board of governors approves the request of the Energy Boosters in temporarily giving up their spot for the national team in the import-flavored second conference next month.
Barako Bull team owner George Chua confirmed to GMANews.TV that he wrote PBA Commissioner Atty. Chito Salud of their willingness to give up their spot for the national team in the second conference.
“We were copy-furnished by the PBA regarding the intention of Smart Gilas to join the PBA in the second conference, so I wrote back our good commissioner and told him that we’re willing to give up our spot for them, but promised that we will be back for the third conference," said Chua in a telephone interview.
Smart Gilas is preparing for the Olympic qualifying FIBA Asia Championship in August.
“Alam naman natin yung nangyari sa kanila sa Asian Games, medyo hindi maganda yung performance, that’s why gustong-gusto nilang gamitin ‘yung second conference as part of their training. Tamang-tama rin naman sa kanila yun, sa tingin ko, dahil may mga import na kasali. So, we have decided to give up our spot for Smart Gilas in the second conference and help them in our own little way," added Chua.
Barako Bull board governor Raffy Casiao believes giving way would be a logical thing to do to help both Smart Gilas and the PBA’s calendar for the 36th season.
“Smart Gilas is really determined to play in the PBA next conference, and since the PBA Commissioner’s Office’s concern is the disruption of scheduling once the team comes in, then we made a proposal to the commissioner that we are willing to give way for Smart Gilas. In that way, we will still have a 10-team field," said Casiao.
“But I would like to make it clear that Barako Bull is not taking a leave of absence because realistically, there’s no such thing as a leave of absence from the PBA," added Casiao.
Chua added that they have not discussed yet with Smart Gilas management the arrangement of whether Barako Bull’s name will be retained or the team’s logo will be put on the jersey, as they still await the decision of the board.
“Before kasi, we were approved by the board when we co-branded with Harbour Centre," said Chua, whose group entered in such an agreement with the Mikee Romero-owned squad. “But we have yet to talk about this with Smart Gilas management, because our request is still up for approval."
Salud said in a text message that he has received both letters from Smart Gilas and Barako Bull, but decided to elevate the case to the board.
“Yes, I have received their letters and referred them to the board for clearance," said Salud.
According to Salud, the request will be evaluated carefully by the board. He hopes the board comes up with a decision during the team owners' meeting at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
“I hope there will be a decision at that time," said Salud.
Salud added that Chua also mentioned to him that once their request is approved, it will give Barako Bull time to revamp and rebuild for the season-ending conference.
Chua also explained that if the request is approved, Barako Bull players who have live contracts will continue to receive their salaries.
“I think after this conference (Philippine Cup), we will still have around six or seven players with live contracts. We will still honor our obligations to them."
The team owner has also talked to Junel Baculi, the Energy Boosters’ head coach, and informed him of their intention for the second conference.
“I’m very thankful that he’s (Junel) very professional," said Chua.
Should the PBA board turn down their request, Casiao said the Energy Boosters will continue competing in the second conference.
Not the first time
Playing as a guest squad in the PBA isn’t the first time for Smart Gilas.
Nearly two years ago, the national developmental squad was accommodated as a guest team in the pro league with all of their games as well as those of their opponents’ considered as no-bearing matches.
The Philippine team-Northern Consolidated Cement (NCC) beefed up by naturalized players Chip Engelland, Jeff Moore and Dennis Still and bannered by several amateur standouts such as Allan Caidic, Hector Calma and Samboy Lim, among others, became the first guest squad to win a PBA title in 1985, sweeping Manila Beer, 4-0, in the best-of-seven series in the import-flavored conference.
It was on that same year that the Philippines won the last Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) crown as well as the prestigious William Jones Cup title. The ABC is now known as the FIBA Asia Championship.
Several other Philippine basketball squads, mostly composed of amateur players, have competed as guest squads in the PBA, but that was during a time when the league had a total of only six competing squads. -- KY, OMG, GMANews.TV

Harris has new home, so very far from Maine
Paul Harris, looking for playing time, leaves the Red Claws to join a team in the Philippines.
By Jenn Menendez jmenendez@mainetoday.com
Staff Writer
Paul Harris, a former Syracuse standout, said goodbye to the Maine Red Claws this week, opting to buy out his contract to join a team in the Philippines.
Harris, who was a fan favorite, admitted playing time became a factor when his minutes were cut about a month into the season.
Still, he contends he has nothing but good things to say about his time in Maine, and the choice will be better for his family. Harris has two sons, 7 and 3.
"Playing time played a little part," said Harris, "but it was a situation where I felt like we went to the (D-League) Showcase. It was the biggest stage of the year. I think I played pretty well. I waited around to see what happened. Nothing really happened.
"This was an offer that I felt like was really good, not just for me but my family, too."
Harris recalled how happy he was when the Red Claws opened camp this year.
He had missed the team's inaugural season with season-ending ankle surgery and was giddy to be back on the court.
"I know. I remember it, too. I really was happy to be in Maine. They stuck by me," said Harris. "They brought me right back. They accepted me from Day 1. I really appreciated that."
Harris was a starter who averaged 33.6 minutes of playing time in his first nine games. Since he has come off the bench, his minutes dropped to 24.6 per game.
He averaged 10.8 points per game.
Harris told the Niagara Gazette he was unhappy with playing time but contends it only played a part.
Harris said he isn't worried about the culture shock of playing in a different country.
"I like going to new places. I think the type of person I am I can fit in wherever I go," he said.
Harris will leave the country Sunday to join the Talk N Text Tropang Texters, a team that is part of the Philippine Basketball Association.
Red Claws General Manager Jon Jennings didn't comment. Teams are precluded from speaking about the transaction by the D-League until the contract is officially bought out.
Maine's roster remains at 10 with Harris gone and Avery Bradley on assignment from the affiliate Boston Celtics.
It's unclear if any moves are on the horizon for Maine (10-14) as it reaches the season's midpoint.

Why?
It is because people would rather see Gilas than Barako. lol.
I'm telling you guys something you know.
It would benefit all parties involved(not really, if you put the other teams who rely on their wins against Barako to make it to the playoffs. hmmm, now that I think about it.... some team owners may not like it since Gilas poses a much bigger threat than Barako...)
Let's see how the board will react. ^^

All-star point guard and former Philippine team member Sol Mercado and Jay-R Reyes, a 6-foot-7 slot man who has never really lived up to his potential, were shipped by Rain or Shine to Air21 in a blockbuster deal that was being finalized until late Thursday night.
Mercado and Reyes, plus reserve center Paolo Bugia, will leave the Elasto Painters, which will get burly but undersized center Beau Belga, Ronnie Matias and a future draft pick.
Caloy Garcia, the former head coach who slipped down to assistant after Rain or Shine came to terms with the multi-titled Yeng Guiao about two weeks ago, begged off from confirming the transaction until after the deal was signed.
But a Philippine Daily Inquirer source close to the Rain or Shine owners divulged the details, which confirmed rumors about Mercado wanting to leave the Elasto Painters after his run-in with Garcia in the Philippine Cup.
Belga and Matias had great stints with the Express while Guiao was calling the shots, and this was probably one of the reasons why the Painters agreed to the trade even though they appear to be on the losing end on paper.
Letting go of Mercado and Reyes would also free a lot of room in the salary cap for the Painters, who can opt for other major talents with the extra money they could spend.
Meanwhile, Hassan Adams, a National Basketball Association veteran, will plane in on Friday to join the Painters for the import-spiced Commissioner's Cup opening February 20. (source: Philippine Daily Inquirer)

PBA Blockbuster: Mercado to Meralco, Reyes to Air21, Buenafe to RoS
With San Miguel Beer and Talk N Text enjoying at least a week-long vacation prior to their much-awaited best-of-seven finals showdown in the PBA Philippine Cup, three teams worked out a multi-player trade deal Thursday night.
Rain or Shine’s blue-chip players Sol Mercado and Jay-R Reyes were shipped to Meralco and Air21 respectively in what is easily one of the biggest trades that happened this conference.,
Highly-placed sources privy on the matter told GMANews.TV that the deal has been agreed upon by the three teams.
Based on the agreement, the Elasto Painters will get Ronjay Buenafe and Ronnie Matias from Air21 and Beau Belga from Meralco. Also included in the package are the two future first-round picks of the Express, Paolo Bugia from Rain or Shine, Eric Rodriguez from Air21 and Reed Juntilla from Meralco.
“Rain or Shine will get the 2011 and 2013 first-round picks of Air21 from the deal. The Express will also get Reed Juntilla from the deal," said a source, who requested anonymity.
“Sol and Mac-Mac under one team? That’s a powerful combination," said another source.
Rain or Shine’s big moves come on the heels of the hiring of multi-tiled mentor Yeng Guiao as its new coach.
Curiously, Guiao and Mercado had a verbal altercation when the veteran mentor was still handling the Express.

reason? "THIS IS A ONE-SIDED TRADE"
commish barrios and the rest of the board governors will not allow this to happen...
unless AIR21 will beef up their trade bait more!..
i have a suggestion..
Sol & JR for WillieM, Mamaril, WillieW & MikeCortez
Bro Sonny Barrios is already history, its now Chito Salud who is the commissioner.
Please note all the PBA players who wants to play for SMART GILAS has been traded to teams owned by MVP as the other PBA owners does not want to be burdened in paying the big salaries of said players when they are actually playing for another team.

RoS also gets the first round picks of Air21 in 2011 and 2013 consecutively, giving them a legit shot at getting the Kraken next year. and if ever the Gilas boys does qualify for 2012, they will also get a top pick on the eventual Gilas draft in 2013. a really good trade for RoS imo, its almost as if it was Alaska who created this trade.

Meralco has now become one the fastest teams in the PBA. Ross-Mercado combination is going to be one of the fastest and not only that these two have the physical advantage over the over guards in the league. Ross is fast and tall for a pg while Sol is fast and wide. :D
I expect Cardona to play the 3 spot to give room for Mercado.

If JR Reyes goes to Air21, I wonder what happens to Quinahan, who's been performing decently.
Also, what about Al-Hussaini and Baclao? It will surely be a monster defensive frontline with Reyes, Quinahan, and Baclao alternating at PF with Quinahan playing C when Rabeh sits down. What Air21 needs next is a good point guard who can backstop Arboleda.

With San Miguel Beer and Talk N Text enjoying at least a week-long vacation prior to their much-awaited best-of-seven finals showdown in the PBA Philippine Cup, three teams worked out a multi-player trade deal Thursday night.
Rain or Shine's blue-chip players Sol Mercado and Jay-R Reyes were shipped to Meralco and Air21 respectively in what is easily one of the biggest trades that happened this conference.,
Highly-placed sources privy on the matter told GMANews.TV that the deal has been agreed upon by the three teams.
"Rain or Shine will get the 2011 and 2013 first-round picks of Air21 from the deal. The Express will also get Reed Juntilla from the deal," said a source, who requested anonymity.
"Sol and Mac-Mac under one team? That's a powerful combination," said another source.
Rain or Shine's big moves come on the heels of the hiring of multi-tiled mentor Yeng Guiao as its new coach.
Curiously, Guiao and Mercado had a verbal altercation when the veteran mentor was still handling the Express.

I don't know if Air 21 would be interested with Miller since the latter's paycheck is something that can easily turn off the Express bosses. He's a max player and no max player at Air 21 stays with the team. So getting him for Reyes (who's not a max player yet) may not be a workable deal. The likelihood is Reyes may still be dealt with by the Express to another team for a less talented player with lower salary plus draft picks to compensate for the two first round picks they lost from ROS in the Reyes trade.
Reyes may still get to suit up for a SMC team though as I doubt if Air 21 would want to keep paying Reyes' salary which is probably in the 200k plus level. They would rather have future picks in the draft than compensate Reyes with the salary that the team may not be able to afford.

A 6'4 in the PBA can be a decent Power Forward and Center, and if they say its small ball when they use five players at the same time with height 6'4 and below then so be it. But it would not create a big mismatch to any team because there are only few players legit 6'7 and above, maybe just around 10 players currently playing in the league right now. and if the other teams use 6'5 and 6'6 players, the height wont really matter more than their speed and athleticism.
The PBA teams can't really match other teams with the leagues in the MidEast and the CBA, with the way they are playing in the PBA. The only way the PBA could attract more fans if they can bring back the glory days of the PBA and the PRIDE of the Pinoys if they can beat the best teams in ASIA.
If only the PBA can realize that if their players is the best players in the Philippines alone and could not be recognize as the best players in Asia, how could they get more followers? Its like Pacman, he is the best fighter in the world that is why he has millions of followers. And for the Azkals, they beat great teams in SouthEast Asia and they got more followers excited to see them their games. If only I could be in Panaad Stadium, I would watch it live. But the Game 1, Game 2, Game 3 of the PBA Finals I would not even care to watch it on tv.

Not just the games where they beat some SE Asia counterparts, for the following games of the Azkals I can't wait to watch it. I've now started watching some European Football Leagues and now I could appreciate watching a full football game unlike before I would only watch the highlights.
And if you are talking about what really matters more, the triumph of the Azkals in SEA Region and the PBA in these Region? Clearly dude, no argument its surely the Azkals. And Azkals could even attract the President of the Philippines, no less, and some Senators to watch them play in the venue. Enough of this talk about Azkals, my apologies to other forumers.

Trades ok'd
by Zean Macamay
Saturday, 22 January 2011 21:10
The PBA Commissioner’s Office yesterday approved the trade that sent Sol Mercado to Meralco and JR Reyes to Air21.
Rain or Shine traded Mercado and the rarely-used Paolo Bugia to Meralco Thursday night in exchange for Beau Belga and the Bolts’ 2011-12 first-round pick.
Reyes, on the other hand, was dealt to Air21 for the injured Ronnie Matias (ACL), Ronjay Buenafe and the Express first-round pick for the 2013-14 season in the three-team deal that also had Reed Juntilla landing with the Express.
At first, Commissioner Chito Salud was skeptical of approving the deals, saying that Rain or Shine got the raw end of the trade since the Elasto Painters merely acquired two healthy players and one that is injured.

Pending PBA board's approval, Barako players to be placed on dispersal draft
REY JOBLE, GMANews.TV
01/21/2011 | 11:28 PM
The Pilipinas-Smart Gilas national developmental team is expected to be accommodated as the Philippine Basketball Association’s 10th member for next month’s Commissioner’s Cup.
Signs are very encouraging for the entry of the Gilas five after PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud told GMANews.TV that he had already made some recommendations and arranged the terms and conditions for Barako Bull, which decided to temporarily give its spot to the national developmental team of coach Rajko Toroman in the import-flavored conference.
“I have made some recommendations, should the board decide to approve Barako Bull’s request to give up its slot for Smart Gilas in the second conference," said Salud in a telephone interview. "On top of it is that players who have live contracts should be put on the dispersal draft."
Salud is now in Victorias City, host of Game One of the PBA Philippine Cup finals between Talk N Text and San Miguel Beer.
The second-generation commissioner also gave several conditions to Barako Bull, such as honoring its obligations to members of the squad – coaches, utility men and players – who have live contracts.
“All obligations must be settled," added Salud. “If players who will be put on the dispersal draft won’t be picked up by other teams, then they will go back to Barako Bull. Anyway, these players who will be picked up by other teams will only play for three months or during the time Barako Bull will be on temporary leave. They will go back to their mother team after the second conference."
Salud also said that if Smart Gilas’ entry will be approved, the team will be known as Pilipinas Smart Gilas – and won’t be associated with Barako Bull.
“That’s the only name they will carry, Pilipinas," said Salud, who added that if the board approves Gilas’ participation, "all of their games will have a bearing on the standings."
“This is also a good opportunity for the public to see how Smart Gilas will fare. They will have a chance to boost their fan base," added Salud.
The board of governors will make a decision on whether to approve Barako Bull’s request on Jan. 25 in the team owners' meeting at Edsa Shangri-La Hotel.
Leave of absence or disbandment?
The last team to file a leave of absence was Shell in 2005. Unfortunately, the Turbochargers, who acquired the franchise of the fabled Crispa Redmanizers, didn’t return to the pro league cage.
Instead, the team disbanded, with their marquee players such as Billy Mamaril, Ronald Tubid, former Rookie of the year Rich Alvarez, Ron Wainwright and Roger Yap, among others, traded to other teams before a new buyer could take over.
Shell’s PBA franchise was first offered to Harbour Centre, but negotiations bogged down, paving the way for the entry of Welcoat of the Asian Coatings Company.
Barako Bull, which has been feeling the effects of a financial pinch for several years now, appears to bear similarities with that Shell squad.
The Energy Boosters have been unloading their marquee players for the past few years, leading basketball observers to wonder whether the team is still capable of running a PBA franchise or not.
Barako Bull team owner George Chua said they are willing to sacrifice and give up their second-conference slot and for national cause. but in his letter to Commissioner Salud, he also pointed out that the temporary leave of absence will give the team time to revamp and rebuild.
One basketball expert said the move will also give the Barako Bull management time to look for potential buyers.
“Three months will give them time to look for buyers. But the sad reality is they’ve been having a hard time paying their obligations to the players and other team members," said the basketball expert, who requested anonymity.
One important person whose future looks dim is Barako Bulls head coach Junel Baculi.
Baculi’s contract will end on Feb. 28, and with the team giving up their spot for Smart Gilas, the fiery mentor might have to look at other options.

Mercado, Reyes trade a puzzle

First Posted 12:00:43 23/01/2011
As if he didn’t have enough problems with his floundering basketball career, this once very promising young cager has let matters get out of hand with his love life.
First, a brief background. This cager was first engaged to be married to his girlfriend. Those who have met the girl give her a thumbs up. They say she is very likeable.
However, the union was not meant to be. Somewhere along the way he met another lady with whom he was severely infatuated, he completely forgot about the girl he was supposed to marry.
Only very recently, I learned that the cager and his new girl had a big fight and that she was contemplating on filing criminal charges against him.
According to unconfirmed reports, the cager had roughed up the girl after he discovered that she was cheating on him.
But this is really nothing new, according to our source who is close to the cager. “The girl has a reputation. She had a boyfriend when she and the cager became a couple,” our source said.
The girl comes from a good school where she is a member of the debating team. It isn’t very clear how she was manhandled. I heard she was slapped. The cager simply went ballistic, which comes as a surprise to many because he’s usually so calm and withdrawn.
Now the cager’s problems are compounded. He was recently dropped from his team and will most likely be sidelined for sometime before he can play again.
I think it’s about time he puts some order to his messed-up life.
* * *
I just couldn’t figure out why Rain or Shine let go of such a talented pair of cagers like Sol Mercado and Jay-R Reyes, both vital cogs of the team.
Newly installed Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao’s official statement was that it was Sol—who had been having a run-in with former head coach Caloy Garcia—who wanted out.
However, I heard reports to the contrary from sources close to the Fil-Am cager.
One source said it was Yeng who wanted to get rid of both Mercado and Reyes and he didn’t know why. He could only speculate.
“Maybe Yeng talked to Caloy and the cagers and got a negative feedback, although in Caloy’s case, he had already patched up his differences with Sol.
The insider said Sol has a tendency to get angry and shout at the players when they don’t exert the same effort as he does.
“Sol hates to lose, that’s why he’s so passionate about the game. As for Jay-R, it’s possible that he’s being perceived as lazy, although he works harder than some of his teammates.”
“Jay-R and Caloy just never got along right from the start. Caloy never liked Jay-R.”
Apparently, neither does Yeng.
Anyway, we can draw our conclusion—an accurate one—when the season is over.
By that time, it will be easy to determine where Sol, Jay-R and Yeng ended up on the positive end of the pole. It’s also possible that all three of them would end up winners.

I think it’s about time he puts some order to his messed-up life.

all I can say is that his SAGA continues .....
with due respect to namamangha, it seems the suggestion of an old post by a IBN forumer seems right, this guy really needs a psychiatrist. His problem is more mental .... he is gifted physically, very athletic and had "US Training".
Let's just pray for him and hope he does live-up to his potential .... many dreampt that he'll be the FIRST homegrown full-blooded Filipino in the NBA.
I still believe he is not pure HYPE .... it is just that he has not matured mentally and emotionally.
the pressure of High Expectations on him delivering immediately did him in.

thanks .... my bad, corrected it already. ;)
he's really a good boy but psychologically there is something really wrong.
Being dumped by both his team and his girl made it worse and he seems to be so out of it already.

so now i quite understand their move to get two high school stars for the team.
puppy love is a lot easier to fix than immature love.
jk.
anyway that cager should be aware that his junior prototype is maturing already..AVO is just right there somewhere.
