Benfica plays qualification in Eurochallenge

By Pedro Barros
(www.abola.pt)

Benfica will pay the invoice of the absence of male Portuguese teams of European club competition in recent years, not entering in a regular stage Eurochallenge (competition that had a right to subscribe), not even being seeded in qualifying.

The selection made by FIBA Europe takes into account a ranking established by the scores achieved by each country clubs in evidence across borders. The portuguese national champions are thus forced to compete in a round two hands as known in the draw to be held this Thursday in Barcelona (Spain).

The opponent of the 'reds' will depart from a pot where are 14 clubs seeded this phase — have the benefit to play the second match in is land. Okapi Aalstar (5 in the League of Belgium), Keravnos Keo (4, Cyprus), Sluc Nancy (5, France), Artland Dragons (9, Germany), Maccabi Haifa (5, Israel), CSU Asesoft Ploiesti (Romania's champion), Lokomotiv-Kuban Krasnodar (9, Russia), Triumph Lyubertsy (6, Russia), ulker (Turkey), Trefl Sopot (4, Poland), Iron-ZNTU (3, Ukraine) and BK Prostejov (2, Czech Republic) are candidates facing Benfica on 29th September, at Imperio Bonanca Hall (Lisbon), and October 6, abroad.

These are teams all with higher budgets — or much higher ... — then portuguese national championships and from more competitive leagues. The task ahead is complicated...

However, the 14 finalists of qualifying join eight badges relegateed from Europe Cup and the other 10, these already known: Base Oostende (3, Belgium), KK Zadar (2, Croatia), Tartu Rock (champion of Estonia), BCM Gravelines (4, France), Telekom Baskets Bonn (5, Germany), Barak Netanya (4, Israel), BK Ventspils (4, Latvia), Lokomotiv Kuban (5, Russia), KRKA (Slovenia champion) and Turk Telekom (5, Turkey). Is thus complete the range of 32 teams who will participate in the regular stage Eurochallenge, which begins at 16 November.

Foreigners? Is not uniform ...

Gets the curiosity regarding the use of foreign or CE players in Eurochallenge. The FIBA Europe determines that clubs meet only the standards in force in their respective leagues and games there is uniformity between the various participants.
Although basketball Federation (FPB) do not have regulations on this matter – what could open a window of opportunities ...- apparently, Benfica shall be based solely on three foreign athletes as unofficial rule in the National League, resulting from a gentleman's agreement reached by the leaders.
