Martin is a very talented young player at the Filipino Community tournaments in the West Coast and is also active in the AAU circuit.

sorry got to go ..... they are about to start the GILAS -Patriots game at the Arena.

Malaysia Choose Tough Company

JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia have chosen to have the cream of Middle East basketball and the power of the South Koreans for company in the 1st Fiba Asia U-16 (men's) championship here from Nov 19-27.

But it's a choice they have to live with, given the fact that as host, Malaysia were given the luxury of choosing which of the four groups in the 17-team competition, they want to be in.

The Malaysian representative at the draw conducted here today, in the presence of state executive councillor for youth and sports Jais Mohamad Sarday and high-ranking officials of the Federation of International Basketball Asia, opted for Group C where the South Koreans, Syria, Kuwait and Singapore lie in wait.

"There are no easy groups, so to speak. So, whichever group we choose to be in, will be difficult," said a spokesman for the Malaysian team.

Early favourites China are in Group A, together with Myanmar, India and Jordan, with Japan, Philippines, Kazakhstan and Bahrain in Group B while Group C will comprise Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The teams will play preliminary round-robin group matches with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knock-out quarter-final stages.

"Given that Fiba Asia is organising the U-16 tournament for the first time, we just cannot have an accurate seeding system.

"So, our draw today was based on the need to have a variety of teams drawn from all regions in each group," said Fiba Asia secretary-general Datuk Yeo Choo Hock.

In the draw for the women's competition which will be played in New Delhi from Nov 30-Dec 6, Malaysia are drawn in Group B, together with South Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Kazakhstan, while in Group A there is China, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong and India.

3 Eaglets back to U16 for FIBA Asia
By Marjorie Gorospe
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 18:40:00 10/12/2009

Filed Under: Sport, University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP)

Quote:
MANILA, Philippines— After winning a back to back title in the UAAP juniors, Kiefer Ravena with Von Pessumal and Paolo Romero are back to regular practice in the Nokia Pilipinas U16 team for the upcoming FIBA Asia on November 19 to 29.

The Eaglets Ravena, Pessumal and Romero played crucial role in the Game 3 match against the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, 61 to 56
.
“We’re back on our regular practice with the RP team practicing almost everyday for the tournament,” said the Finals most valuable player Ravena.

U16 mentor Eric Altamirano told INQUIRER.net that the national team was aiming to regroup the team players since they all had been busy with their respective schools.

“The last time that we were able to practice as a whole team was June after our friendly match in Beijing and after that we allowed the players to focus with their respective schools,” said Altamirano.

Altamirano added that although the players were active with the tournaments, they would still need to undergo “conditioning” since international competition still requires different training since they will again be exposed to other countries.

“Our immediate plan is to regroup them and condition them for the international competition for the first two weeks,” said Altamirano noting that they only have five remaining weeks before their competition in Malaysia.

Altamirano also added that they have 17 players as of the moment but they would have to trim it down to 15 players and he noted that the Fil-Am Bobby Parks won’t be joining the line up since he was still in the US.

The remaining weeks for them according to Altamirano will also be allotted to train the players as one team again with their tune up games in Cebu on November 5-9 for the Nokia Invitational Cup.

Also included in the U16 team are University of Santo Tomas Cub Kevin Ferrer and Ralph Nayve of San Beda College.

FIBA U19 World Championships: Kazakhstan
July 4th, 2009 at 9:46 pm by Christophe

The FIBA U19 World Championships have started this week in New Zealand and we had not that many surprises so far as all the big teams from Europe and the Americas have qualified for the next round. So I chose to take a closer look at one of the intruders to the Final round that was a total unknown to me before: Kazakhstan. So far, Anton Ponomarev was the only player I knew from that country as he played an interesting Reebok Eurocamp in Treviso. He was not a member of the team in New Zealand as he was born in 1988 and this tournament was setup for the 1990 and younger players.

N.B.: This post has been written before we discovered the apparent passport-fraud of several Kazakh players. I have left it as it is here but be aware that the players described here may not be born for real in the year where they are categorized.

The first name that you want to check of course is the one of Alexandr Zhigulin who is the youngest player of the tournament. Zhigulin, who already has a Jordan Brand Classic participation in his resume is born on the 26th of April 1994 which makes him 4 years young than the competition. And when you see his face, you know that this date is not fake, this kid is really that young. However, you may be surprised how he acts on the court as he looks already pretty mature in his decision making and a major part of his game is based on positioning. He has been officially listed at 2m02 but he looks a bit taller on the court as he shows an interesting wingspan and a still very thin body which is of course a sign of his youth.

Offensively, he lives a lot from pick-and-roll or high-low situations as he plays most of the minutes on the PF position while his future probably is more as a SF. He has very good hands and he can develop an interesting 3pt shot in the future. He takes most of his offensive plays in the paint right now but he takes the occasional three when open. When you consider that he is 4 years younger than the rest of the team, you really don’t see it when he is on the court. He is so far the team’s third best scorer with 11.6ppg and 5.3rpg at great shooting percentages of 52.2%.

under-16 team to go all-Pinoy in FIBA-Asia tilt
10/13/2009 | 07:40 PM

The Nokia under-16 national team will be playing All-Filipino in the 1st FIBA Asia U-16 Championship to be held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia from November 19 to 29.

Bobby Ray Parks Jr., the 6-foot-3 versatile Fil-Am son of former seven-time PBA best import awardee Bobby Parks, will not be able to join the team under the coach Eric Altamirano’s watch.

Parks, whose was among the 24 players picked last January to form the national pool, opted out of the team due to his studies at St. George High School.

“Unfortunately, Bobby Ray can’t join the team. We wanted him to play for us, stay with us for a month and a half, but he could not find a way to leave school that long. Much as we wanted him to be part of the team that would play in November, that will not happen," said Altamirano.

A southpaw, Parks could have helped the team since he can play almost all positions and averaged 19 points a game while playing for St. George High School.

No less than Gryphons coach Jeff Ruffin praised Parks’ talent. “He’s a hard-nosed kid who can bring up the ball against pressure, or play on the wing, or even in the post as a five if we had a great matchup."

Altamirano said plans to invite other Fil-foreign players also proved futile since parents would not allow these players to skip school for long period of time.

“These players are high school players and that’s the hard part. If you invite them to play, they really have to skip school and miss a lot of classes and the parents would not want that to happen. It’s really hard to invite players unless they really decide to come over."

Despite playing al-Filipino, Altamirano who also handles the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), believes his current team will be able to perform well in the FIBA-Asia U16 tilt

“Coach Rajko Toroman has been giving us inputs since he knows the international brand of basketball. This team also has been training since January so we are prepared heading into the Championship," added Altamirano.

As their final tune-up for the FIBA-Asia, which has 17 countries vying for the title, the Nokia Under 16 team will be competing against three foreign teams in the 2nd Nokia-Pilipinas Youth Invitational Basketball Championship at the University of San Carlos, in Cebu City.

Iran, Chinese Taipei and Japan are arriving for the four-day pocket tournament from November 5 to 8. The Philippines play Iran on November 5 before taking on Chinese Taipei and Japan in the next two days. The finals will be played on November 8.

Prior to the Invitational, the team will play goodwill games against Jordan, which arrives on October 18 and will stay for the next 10 days to train in the country.

“Japan is bracketed with the Philippines in the FIBA-Asia and this will give us the chance to study their game. Iran’s participation and Jordan’s arrival will provide the team the knowledge on how Middle East teams play," added Altamirano.

Kiefer Ravena, Von Pessumal and Paolo Romero who led Ateneo to the UAAP titles, lead the RP U16 team together with Cederick Labing-Isa and Kevin Ferrer (UST); Jeron Teng (Xavier); Dan Sara and Raf Nayve (San Beda); Angelo Alolino (Perpetual); Cris Tolomia (FEU); Michael Pate and Rene Sta. Maria (La Salle-Greenhills); Emmanuel Bonleon (Holy Child Davao); Gabriel Reyes (La Salle-Zobel); Jeoff Javillonar (RUT); Prince Caperal (Arellano) and Nestor Bantayan (Adamson).

Kazakhstan and Bahrain join the Philippines and Japan in Group B while China, Myanmar, India and Jordan compose Group A. Korea, Singapore, Syria, Kuwait and Malaysia are in Group C while Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Iran and Saudi Arabia are the teams in Group D.

Top two teams after the single round group elimination will advance into the quarterfinals. The champion squad earns a seat to the 2010 FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Hamburg, Germany. – GMANews.TV

Thanks actually I already forwarded info and videos of the guy already to Coach E several months ago. Yesterday I gave names of players who could be his team mates based from the Kazakhstan web site (translated from Russian) http://translate.google.com.au/trans...hl=en&ie=UTF-8. We also found about a citizenship switch scandal story in Kazakhstan http://www.europeanprospects.com/con...ory-continues/.

Aside from China, we are also getting reports of probabable age shaving by some other countries which are hard to confirm if the FIBA Asia would only make "Legal" documents as their basis, I already suggested to the SBP that they lobby at FIBA Asia for the use of the age tests that were carried out by radiography on the wrists of U16 FIBA Africa players which caught 2 players of Guinea’s team overaged and resulted in their suspension for cheating.

( I don't know what I just wrote or if it made any sense but I do hope u can figure what I'm trying to say).
Added to our team is 6'5 Prince Caperal of the Arellano Baby Chiefs.

Nestor Bantayan of the Adamson Baby Falcons is a good rebounder but forgot what is his height.

But hope we can find more info and videos of the U16 Bahrain and Kazakhstan teams which are in our group. Japan's team would be coming over here in Manila before they proceed to Malaysia and four of their players were their players in the FIBA33 tournament in the Asian Youth Games held in Singapore recently.

http://basketball.exchange.ph/2009/0...r-and-coaches/

we are just taking the advice of Toroman that the problem that our teams have is not height but team chemistry. We would try to make our lack of ceiling more of an advantage than a disadvatage as we would be using our players speed and agility to the hilt. We already know what to expect from China as we trained and played with them in Beijing and it is next to impossible to try to match-up with them height wise, so we'll just do as Jaworski once said let's chop them down to size. We just have to make our players not get intimidated with the big trees and hope that Joey Guanio had polished the boys outside shooting.

Here's the team of China:

RP Youth squad shows ware in Cebu meet
10/14/2009
Quote:
The Nokia RP under-16 team gears up for its coming campaign in the Fiba-Asia championship next month as it sees action in the 2nd Nokia Pilipinas Youth Invitational basketball championship slated in Cebu City.

The four-day pocket tournament is set Nov. 5 to 8, with the national squad of Iran, Japan and Chinese-Taipei completing the four-team cast.

RP team mentor Eric Altamirano said in the PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch that the meet serves as a perfect gauge of how far the nationals’ preparation has gone for the Fiba-Asia event in Johore Baru, Malaysia on Nov. 19 to 29.

“The pocket tournament gives us an idea of how these teams look and play,” said Altamirano, noting that the Japanese had been bracketed with the Filipinos in Group B of the Fiba-Asia tilt along with Kazakhstan and Bahrain.

“But we’re optimistic of our chances in the face of a very tough competition. I know we have the right set of guys who have the right mind set for this kind of a tournament.”

RP-Nokia U-16 team hones for Asian tilt
Sports

THE Nokia-RP under-16 team gears up for its coming campaign in the Fiba-Asia championship next month as it sees action in the second Nokia Pilipinas Youth Invitational basketball championship in Cebu City.

The four-day pocket tournament is set from November 5 to 8, with the national squads of Iran, Japan and Chinese Taipei completing the four-team cast.

The meet, to be held at the University of San Carlos Gym, is organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and cosponsored by the Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente.

RP team mentor Eric Altamirano said the meet serves as a perfect gauge of the nationals’ preparedness for the Fiba-Asia event in Johore Baru, Malaysia from November 19 to 29.

“The pocket tournament gives us an idea of how these teams look and play,” said Altamirano during the PSA Forum on Tuesday at Shakey’s United Nations Avenue, noting that the Japanese had been bracketed with the Filipinos in Group B of the Fiba-Asia tilt along with Kazakhstan and Bahrain.

“But we’re optimistic of our chances in the face of a very tough competition. I know we have the right set of guys who have the right mindset for this kind of a tournament.”

Joining Altamirano in the session presented by Outlast Battery, Shakey’s, Accel and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. were SBP executive director Noli Eala, assistant coaches Mon Jose and Joey Guanio, team manager Joel Lopa, Nokia corporate communications manager Nikka Abes, Rotary Club Cebu Fuente president Rady Abarintos, vice president Dina Ramos and director for public relations Jaqueline Siwala.

“We chose Cebu as this year’s venue since it is the Queen City of the South and the biggest basketball market in the country outside of Manila,” said Eala.

The SBP executive formally turned over the hosting of the meet to Abarintos during the public sports program.

A similar invitational event organized by the SBP and Nokia was held last year as part of the training of the RP Youth team under Franz Pumaren. Teams from Lithuania, China and Chinese Taipei saw action.

This year’s RP under-16 team is composed of Cederick Labing-isa, Dan Sara, Angelo Alolino, Kiefer Ravena, Cris Tolomia, Von Pessumal, Kevin Ferrer, Jeron Teng, Michael Pate, Raf Nayve, Rene Sta. Maria, Emmanuel Bonleon, Gabriel Reyes, Jeoff Javillonar, Paolo Romero, Prince Caperal and Nestor Bantayan.

The tournament is a single round robin elimination with the top two teams advancing to the title match.

Opening day pits Iran against Chinese Taipei and the Philippines taking on Japan.

On November 6, Iran clashes with Japan before the Philippines-Chinese Taipei tussle.

The final day of eliminations will have Japan going up against Chinese Taipei and the Philippines battling Iran.

even some of the sports media have doubts but from what I heard from Coach E, they are really big. And as per my estimate, average height wise they're even bigger than Powerade.

I just don't know which one is that particular team that our boys faced in Beijing:
