Tomic scored 32 back then. I looked it up.

I think most german fans agree with you on the foreigner thing. Because of the huge number of rather cheap college graduates from the US, the style of the league has become that of a US development league with the emphasis on athletism and one-on-one play, a style that doesn't sit too well with at least the IBN branch of german bball supporters (that's also why I'm rooting for Oldenburg in the finals, sorry robbe). The leagues started a plan to increase the number of german players on a BBL roster to 4 next season, though. There's been some debate among fans recently if the BBL should go for a 6+6 or a 4+1 ruling (meaning that one german player has to be on the field all the time) in the next few years. A nationwide U19 league (NBBL) has also been established 3 years ago to increse the level of competition the youngsters face, and a U17 league (JBBL) will tip off next year. Hence, some steps in the right direction has been made, but it will take some time to make up for the total lack of youth development that had been going on for 10 years. Until then I'm crossing my fingers for the 89 generation. There's some quality talent there.

Someone wants to praise me for how I elegantly changed the topic back from "The past of the german NT" to "The future of the german NT" again?

In an interview published today in Frankfurter Allgemeiner Zeitung NT-coach Bauermann said that the majority of this summer's NT might consist of players who played in the German second division. This is due to the fact, that there are only few German players in the BBL who get decent minutes.

Yes, print edition only, unless you're a subscriber or want two spend 2€ to read it.

Mithat Demirel and Robert Garrett both retired from the NT now. Furthermore, Demond Green won't play in Poland either. He'll take the summer off to spend more time with his family.

I think that sends out a pretty strong message to German clubs.

@rikhardur

You sound as if you're still believing... something most German fans certainly gave up.

There are some clubs who are in favour of following ACB or the Turkish league and imposing a higher quota for German players. But as far as I count heads they still are the minority. Especially the smaller clubs just don't want to part with their way of signing a bunch of 2000-$-US-Rookies and hope for some glory or at least a glimpse at the playoffs. A lot might depend on which teams will have voting rights in the next general assembly.

Take a look at the finalist Oldenburg: A budget easily within the top five of the league. And just 10 minutes for German players in 10 playoff games. That's an average of 1 minute per game.

There's some more vage information about how the next NT might look. Bauermann will announce the roster later this week.

Cornerstones are: Jagla (Joventud), Schultze (Larissa), Hamann (ALBA)
Probable players are the others who were in the (extended) roster last year: Wysocki (Frankfurt), Herber (ALBA), Zwiener (ALBA), Ohlbrecht (Bamberg), Geib (Düsseldorf), Idbihi (Limoges)

In another Interview Bauermann said that Johannes Strasser (Bonn) will be invited to the NT camps.

Youngsters who might get an invitation are:
Johannes Lischka (1987, SF/PF)
Karsten Tadda (1988 SG)
Tibor Pleiss (1989 C)
Elias Harris (1989 F)
Nicolai Simon (1987 PG)
Per Günther (1988 PG)

This generation of U22 players is highly regarded by coach Bauermann. Some (Lischka, Günther, Pleiss) got some minutes in Bundesliga this season. Simon played UlebCup two years ago with ALBA but was sidelined for a long time.

Another player who might be in the NT is Guard Lucca Staiger (Iowa State) who told in an interview that he'll spend the summer with the NT and currently takes part in the A2/U24-camp.

Edit: @CWILL Sorry, Ohlbrecht in Frankfurt that's a typo and b***s**t.

I just imagined Ohlbrecht joining Frankfurt.
If you face Didin's legendary "high expectations" (or others call it problems) with Centers, I think Ohlbrecht would clearly have a tough time.

Bauermann on the proposed 6+6 rule: "It won't work to find 6 Germans with enough quality for each of the 18 teams. There are simply not enough." He supports a model that requires one german player to be on the court at every time (4+1). 6+4 could be an alternative.

The first cuts were made, the first players are injured (Herber: torn ACL; Greene: mildly sprained ankle).

The 15-men roster for the friendly games against Serbia looks as follows:

Steffen Hamann / Heiko Schaffartzik / Per Günther
Demond Greene / Lucca Staiger
Konrad Wysocki / Philip Zwiener / Robin Benzing
Jan Jagla / Sven Schultze / Johannes Lischka / Elias Harris
Tim Ohlbrecht / Yassin Idbihi / Tibor Pleiss

Default No Nowitzki

It looks like Dirk won't be playing in Poland next month at the world championships because the Mavs don't want him to.

http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/...ory?id=4398590

The Mavericks are a very old team and they only have 1 or 2 more years to make a championship run so they want Nowitzki to be a fresh as possible for the NBA season. This is too bad for Germany, country should come first over anything.

Robin Benzing was practicing with the Skyliners all season long, but head coach Murat Didin did not think very good about him.
So Benzing signed with BBL club ratiopharm Ulm for the next season.
As you mentioned his fundamentals are very good for a player of his age and size. It will be interesting to see how competitive he will be in a americanzied BBL.

Btw: I wrote a report about the german national team on my site German Hoops.
