ITA - Repesa’s Benetton wins at Siena’s Palasport fortress

SIENA (Lega A) - Montepaschi Siena’s Palasport Mens Sana has been a citadel in recent times.

That didn’t stop Benetton Treviso from travelling to Tuscany and ending Montepaschi’s three-year unbeaten run with a 99-96 triumph over the Lega A leaders on Sunday.

The last coach to win in Siena?

It was former Croatia national team boss Jasmin Repesa, when he was at the helm of Lottomatica Roma.

Repesa is now the coach of Benetton.

"It has been an important win, a victory of great prestige,” Repesa said.

"To win here is already an achievement for any Euroleague team, so imagine us, that we went into the game following a dreadful game against Bologna.”

Benetton had lost 61-50 to Virtus Bologna back on April 17.

"I have to compliment my players and I hope this victory brings calm and gives us positive vibes,” Repesa said.

Benetton were once among the best teams in Italy but they have struggled in recent campaigns, much to the frustration of their passionate fans.

The win was vital for the Treviso outfit as it lifted it into the eighth and final play-off spot in Lega A.

Two players that figure to have important roles for the national teams this summer at the FIBA World Championship excelled for Benetton.

Donatas Montiejunas of Lithuania had 16 points and seven rebounds and Croatia’s Davor Kus poured in 14 points.

Bobby Dixon led Benetton with 18 points.

Montepaschi, this year’s Coppa Italia winners, clinched first place in the regular season long ago.

They are 14 points clear of second-place Pepsi Caserta, who hit the road and edged Cimberio Varese, 88-85.

Third-place NGC Medical Cantu also prevailed at Air Avellino, 85-76.

Avellino are level on points with Benetton but now in ninth place.

Seventh-place Lottomatica Roma won 66-64 at fourth-top Armani Jeans Milano and moved level on points with Sigma Coatings Montegranaro, who are sixth at 14-11 after a 77-75 defeat at bottom side Carife Ferrara.

Banca Tercas Teramo won 69-61 at home over Scavolini Pesaro and Virtus Bologna slumped to a 68-65 home defeat to second-bottom Vanoli Cremona.

ITA - Benetton hammer Armani Jeans to clinch last playoff spot

TREVISO (Lega Basket Serie A) - Benetton Treviso convincingly beat Armani Jeans Milano 91-59 on the last day of the regular season to take the eighth and final playoff spot.

The win earned Jasmin Repesa's side the right to face reigning champions Montepaschi Siena in the first round of the postseason. The best-of-five games first round series begin on Thursday.

Playing against his former team, Maurice Taylor had 17 points to lead the onslaught. Five other players scored in double digits.

The home side led 25-21 at the end of the opening period and outscored the visitors 22-13 in the second quarter for a 47-34 advantage and they kept adding to it the rest of the way.

The defeat saw Milano finish third in the standings and their first round opponents will be Sigma Coatings, who finished the regular season on a winning note, beating Bancas Tercas Teramo 87-81.

Meanwhile, Siena finished the season with a 26-2 record following an 87-66 away win over Canadian Solar Bologna.

In a preview of a playoff first round match-up, Pepsi Caserta saw off Lottomatica Roma 85-69 to clinch second place in the standings with an 18-10 mark. The two teams square up again on Friday for their postseason opener.

At the other end of the table, staying in the top flight was at stake as Angelico Biella and Carife Ferrara squared off at the BiellaForum. The home team survived a strong second half rally by the visitors to win 82-79 and avoid the drop to Lega2.

Carife were outscored 30-18 in the second quarter and trailed 55-35 at the break, but they fought hard and bravely after the intermission to get within 80-79. Biella though sealed the deal from the free-throw line with Pietro Aradori making both foul shots.

In the fourth and final playoff match-up, NGC Medical Cantu take on Canadian Solar Bologna.

ITA – Siena off and running in rout of Benetton

SIENA (Lega A) - Benetton Treviso had to scratch and claw their way into the post-season and finished in eighth place, but their reward was a first-round meeting with Montepaschi Siena and the undisputed kings of Lega A in recent seasons wiped the floor with them in Thursday's Game 1.

Simone Pianigiani's men rolled to a 118-79 victory.

Henry Domercant led six Montepaschi players in double figures with 19 points.

Armani Jeans Milano finished third during the regular season and they got off on the right foot with a 72-65 victory over Sigma Coatings Montegranaro.

Italy international Mason Rocca had 14 points and nine boards for Armani Jeans.

NGC Medical Cantu also won their opening game, beating Virtus Bologna 75-64.

Marten Leunen poured in 16 points and grabbed seven boards for Cantu.

ITA – Sato-inspired Montepaschi edge Benetton to reach last four

TREVISO (Lega A) - Montepaschi Siena completed a 3-0 sweep of Benetton Treviso on Tuesday night but the Palaverde team didn't go down without a fight.

Simone Pianigiani's side, which is gunning for a fourth straight Italian title, scraped a 69-66 Game 3 triumph thanks to the superlative play of Romain Sato.

The Central Africa national team star had 23 points and six rebounds as Mens Sana claimed a narrow win for the second game in a row.

Siena had needed overtime to win Game 2, 99-88, a clash in which Sato scored 17 points.

"We knew it was going to be hard," Sato said.

"We went to Treviso knowing that we had to give our best and knowing we would face a team that made life difficult for us last Saturday when they took the game to overtime.

"That is why we are happy to have won.

"What mattered was to get the points because we knew that sooner or later, the shots would go in.

"That was the only way that I could help my team."

Benetton were the last team to win the Italian championship before Montepaschi and that happened in 2006.

Montepaschi will take on either NGC Medical Cantu' or Virtus Bologna in the next round.

Virtus stayed alive in their quarter-final tie with an 89-78 triumph over Cantu' in their Futurshow Station on Tuesday.

Pepsi Caserta and Armani Jeans Milano, meanwhile, finished off their opponents and will now meet in the semi-finals.

Caserta won 83-74 at Lottomatica Roma to win the last-eight tie, 3-0.

Armani Jeans Milano claimed an 81-75 Game 3 triumph over Sigma Coatings Montegranaro.

McIntyre, Domercant and Eze should leave.

Sato, Lavrinovic, Stonerook and Zisis should stay.

It is rumored Siena will sign Pietro Aradori (Biella) as their starting SG, they'll also have David Moss back from Virtus Bologna's loan, but it's unsure if he stays. He should get a Bulgarian passport, in that case they will keep him.
And they're keen on Greg Brunner (Montegranaro) as their new starting C, but only if he gets a Swiss passport, otherwise they'll be looking for some other European center.
Still questionable who will be their new American starting PG...

Anyway, it's gonna sound like this:

    US PG?-Aradori-Sato-Stonerook-Brunner?
(Zisis, Carraretto, Moss?, Ress, K. Lavrinovic...)

ITA – Montepaschi rout Cantu' in semi-final opener

SIENA (Lega A) - Montepachi Siena destroyed NGC Medical Cantu' on Tuesday night at the Palasport Mens Sana in Game 1 of their best-of-five Lega A play-off semi-final.

Mens Sana, the three-time defending champions and winners of the last Coppa Italia, stormed out to a 30-17 lead by the end of the first quarter and rolled to a 100-73 triumph.

The Tuscan team tore Cantu' apart with a 13-of-18 effort from behind the arc.

Central Africa star Romain Sato, who had 23 points for Siena, and David Hawkins (15pts) were each a perfect three of three from long range while Terrell McIntyre (18pts) also buried both of his attempts.

Jerry Green and Martin Leunan poured in 14 points apiece in defeat for Cantu'.

Game 2 is also at the Palasport Mens Sana on Thursday.

Caserta host the opening game of their semi-final with Armani Jeans Milano on Tuesday night.

One more rumor reports that Siena is interested in Asvel's French PF Ali Traore.
Dunno if it's true, but I've heard Doron Perkins might be their new starting PG next season...

After the huge performance in the semifinal game #1 vs Caserta, I wouldn't be surprised if Milano decides to confirm Jamie Arnold, considering he holds an Israeli passport.

    Grand Final series starts tonight...

Only interesting thing to follow in this series will be to see whether Milano can get within 10 points of Siena in any of the games

    Two teams to enter LegaDue.
One off those two is Barcellona (small town from Sicily), the other will be either Fortitudo or Forlì. Actually, Forlì is ahead 2-1 in the final series (best of 5).

Okay, after Brindisi now we have the other team promoted to Serie A.
It's Sassari, that won the final series vs Veroli 3-1, so Sardegna (Sardinia) finally has a team in the Italian top league 32 years later (Cagliari was the last team from Sardegna to play in Serie A in 1977-1978 season).
Hero of the night, veteran mighty mouse Jason Rowe (30 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds, 6 steals)...
Who knows what's gonna happen now, certainly this team is not in a pretty good financial situation, so they will have to find a way to afford higher costs now that they're in Serie A.

Fortitudo's still alive, tonight they beat Forlì, so this series goes to decisive game5 (now it's 2-2). Winner will play in LegaDue next season.

Fortitudo defeated Forlì 81-80 on the road after a beautiful thrilling game, thanks to a buzzer beater by Malaventura...The ball hits every bit of the rim and gets in as time expires...Great game, really.

Fortitudo is promoted to LegaDue but the club's still in a mess. Let's wait and see what happens...

hehe, great story and even better ending...
what do you mean by club is still a mess?

    meanwhile Siena won another title..
they are by far the best team in italy..
but with the refs help and treatment they are getting in Italy no wonder they can't do jack shit in euroleague with a normal refereeing..

I mean the actual ownership still has a lot of financial issues to be solved. Fortitudo just won on the court but this may be useless if the financial troubles remain. In this case the Italian Federation will reject them from LegaDue. We just have to wait and see what happens...I hope they'll be able to get out off this mess and keep the promotion they just achieved. They deserved it.

Siena is simply too much for Milano and other shitty opponents of our league.
Sometimes refs may have been a little helpful to them but obviously that's not the reason why they keep dominating in Italy since 4 long seasons. They're too good for the others. But still, that's not enough to compete with the very top teams in the Continent because Siena has a lot lower budget. It may happen they advance to the F4 (like a couple of years ago), but they can't reach this goal every season with a 8-men rotation...

    Default David Moss

French pro A team LeMans Basket seems to be very interested in SG David Moss (Virtus). They would offer him a 270,000$ one year contract. To be followed...
