    5th week

    Caserta-Pesaro 95-81 - Jum. Jones 21 pts + 8 rebs + 4 stls (3/6 2p, 4/5 3p, 3/4 ft), T. Bowers 18 pts + 5 stls (6/14 2p, 0/1 3p, 6/9 ft), A. Michelori 17 pts + 7 rebs + 2 blks + 2 asts in 22' (5/5 2p, 7/7 ft), E. Ere 14 pts + 4 stls (3/6 2p, 2/7 3p, 2/3 ft), F. Di Bella 13 pts (4/5 2p, 1/4 3p, 2/2 ft) ; M. Hicks 26 pts + 7 rebs + 5 stls but also 6 to (6/9 2p, 3/5 3p, 5/6 ft), Marq. Green 12 pts + 4 rebs + 6 asts (0/3 2p, 4/5 3p), E. Williams 11 pts + 6 rebs in 19' (5/8 2p, 1/6 ft), S. Flamini 10 pts (2/2 2p, 2/4 3p, 0/1 ft)

3rd in a row for Caserta (4-1), that confirms to be among the hottest teams in the league despite some problems (Kavaliauskas injured, Doornekamp with the flu). Pesaro started very strong, putting great defensive pressure on the ball and took a significant early lead (6-20). But Caserta reacted, mainly thanks to a mighty performance by Michelori, who came off the bench and provided defensive hustle and a perfect offensive performance (see %), but also Jumaine Jones played a very solid game, he nailed most of his shots and did a good job in the defensive rebounding. Good contribution also from Di Bella, Bowers and Ere (who also defended well), they all stepped up their game in the 2nd half when Caserta went ahead in the score and made the decisive run. Good debut game offensively for Eric Williams, he's far from being in shape but in his limited playtime he did show that Pesaro will have a solid inside game with him (but he desperatley needs to work on his ft %). Michael Hicks (top scorer of the league last year), who's been struggling early in the season, had his best game so far, but his teammates didn't help him that much and at the end he seemed tired and suffered Ere's defense a bit. One more very poor performance by Dusan Sakota, who's not contributing as expected (low shooting %, no rebounds). Pesaro needs to add a player imo, possibly a good scorer, because Williams' health is a concern and actually Hicks is the only stable offensive threat they have.
Caserta's owner confirmed they're close to seal the deal with Maurice Taylor, I think they can be among the revelations of the season, they have a pretty talented and well balanced roster.

BTW: Cremona-Napoli is postponed. Cremona's front office is not very happy with that , because they believe this way Napoli will have the chance to make Traylor debut (he couldn't have played tomorrow due to burocratic delays) and sign the PG they're still searching for...

    The other games

    Virtus Bologna-Milano 83-87 (O.T.) - M. Maggioli 17 pts + 7 rebs + 3 stls (6/9 2p, 0/1 3p, 5/5 ft), D. Moss 15 pts + 8 rebs + 7 stls + 4 asts (5/15 2p, 0/3 3p, 5/6 ft), D. Vukcevic 15 pts in 22' (0/3 2p, 4/5 3p, 3/5 ft), L. Hurd 13 pts (4/16 2p, 0/4 3p, 5/10 ft) ; M. Petravicius 16 pts in 20' (6/9 2p, 4/4 ft), A. Acker 16 pts + 5 rebs (2/4 2, 2/3 3p, 6/6 ft), M. Finley 13 pts + 5 asts (3/6 2p, 1/5 3p, 4/4 ft), M. Rocca 11 pts + 8 rebs + 3 stls (4/6 2p, 3/7 ft), S. Mancinelli 11 pts + 4 rebs (5/7 2p, 0/1 3p, 1/2 ft)

Awful one. Patethic shot %, turnovers, mistakes and all the bad things you can imagine. If you have the chance to watch it, be aware that you might start dislike basketball. Good effort for fighter Mason Rocca, but that's it, this game was too ugly to be true.

    Siena-Ferrara 89-49 - R. Sato 21 pts + 7 rebs in 24' (5/5 2p, 3/4 3p, 2/2 ft), H. Domercant 12 pts in 19' (1/2 2p, 3/8 3p, 1/1 ft), B. Eze 11 pts + 4 rebs + 2 blks + 3 stls (5/8 2p, 1/2 ft) ; A. Grundy 18 pts (3/6 2p, 3/9 3p, 3/4 ft), H. Jamison 11 pts (5/7 2p, 1/2 ft)

Ferrara kept it alive for 1 half. In the 2nd, was simply crunched by Siena that let the opponents score only 16 miserable points. One more terrific game for Romain Sato, whose numbers are simply amazing so far:
    http://195.56.77.208/player/?id=SAT-...2009&team=1173

    Treviso-Montegranaro 95-77 - G. Neal 21 pts + 5 rebs (6/10 2p, 3/7 3p), C. Martin 16 pts + 5 rebs + 4 stls + 0 to (3/4 2p, 2/4 3p, 4/6 ft), S. Nicevic 14 pts + 4 rebs (7/9 2p), CJ Wallace 12 pts + 9 rebs + 3 stls + 1 blk + 1 asts (5/6 2p, 2/2 ft), D. Motiejunas 10 pts + 2 stls in 19' (4/6 2p, 2/3 ft) ; G. Brunner 20 pts + 11 rebs (9/12 2p, 2/6 ft), D. Ivanov 16 pts + 8 rebs (7/9 2p, 0/3 3p, 2/6 ft), M. Marquinhos 12 pts + 6 rebs + 3 asts (3/7 2p, 0/5 3p, 6/7 ft)

Easy win for Treviso, that always kept a comfortable lead since the start.
Good for them to see Cartier Martin playing a convincing game at last. Third loss in a row for Montegranaro, I start thinking that giving the PG duties to Maestranzi might be a very bad choice. Man, he's really struggling and what's even worse is they don't even have a real backup fo him...They'd need to add a new PG asap imo.

    Roma-Biella 69-73 (O.T.) - I. Jaaber 17 pts + 8 rebs + 3 stls (5/7 2p, 1/7 3p, 4/6 ft), K. Winston 11 pts + 4 rebs (5/10 2p, 0/5 3p, 1/6 ft), H. Toure 10 pts + 9 rebs in 22' (2/3 2p, 0/1 3p, 6/6 ft) ; JT Smith 20 pts (2/6 2p, 4/9 3p, 4/5 ft), P. Aradori 17 pts + 6 rebs (5/8 2p, 1/3 3p, 4/4 ft), M. Soragna 14 pts + 7 rebs (3/4 2p, 2/6 3p, 2/2 ft)

Biella did it again. After kicking Roma out off the playoffs last season, Biella wins again on the road after an OT. Smith+Aradori confirms to be a good scoring duo, but Roma played damn bad and missed too many FT. With this loss they're just 2-3...

    Cantù-Teramo 74-69 - Jer. Green 17 pts (4/4 2p, 1/2 3p, 6/6 ft), M. Markoishvili 15 pts + 4 asts (4/8 2p, 1/4 3p, 4/5 ft), N. Mazzarino 12 pts (2/5 2p, 0/4 3p, 8/9 ft), M. Leunen 11 pts + 9 rebs (4/6 2p, 1/4 3p), B. Ortner 11 pt + 5 rebs (5/9 2p, 1/4 ft) ; R. Hoover 13 pts (4/6 3p, 1/2 ft), G. Jurak 10 pts + 5 rebs in 18' (4/4 2p, 0/1 3p, 2/2 ft), G. Poeta 10 pts (2/6 2p, 2/5 3p), D. Diener 10 pts (0/4 2p, 3/6 3p, 1/2 ft)

Still without Othyus Jeffers, Cantù finds a way to win the 4th straight game. Once again Teramo stumbles in the final minutes of the game, missing shots and making bad choices, Poeta is not playing well and the main impression is their coach Capobianco still has to work a lot...

    Varese-Avellino 74-91 - G. Galanda 19 pts + 8 rebs + 4 asts (6/8 2p, 2/4 3p, 1/1 ft), S. Cotani 16 pts + 5 rebs (3/6 2p, 2/3 3p, 4/6 ft) ; DeM. Nelson 27 pts + 6 rebs + 4 stls (9/13 2p, 1/3 p, 6/6 ft), Dee Brown 17 pts + 8 asts (3/6 2p, 2/9 3p, 5/6 ft), F. Dylewicz 16 pts + 9 rebs (6/8 2p, 1/1 3p, 1/2 ft), S. Szewczyk 11 pts + 7 rebs + 1 blk (3/5 2p, 1/4 3p, 2/2 ft)

Ok, Varese had all kinds of problems (Slay and Morandais injured + other players hurt), but once again Avellino really impressed with his fast-paced spectacular bball. After a slow start, DeMarcus Nelson is now showing not only remarkable offensive skills, but also an all-around attitude, even if the leader of the team remains Dee Brown, no doubt about it. So, Avellino remains at the top as the only undefeated team with Siena (5-0).

    Hutson out with the flu.

Gigli twisted his knee in the 4th quarter, I don't know how serious this injury is, but I really don't think he'll be able to play vs Maccabi.

    Some notes...
    - An interesting round for point guards. I'll make three names: Dee Brown (Avellino), EJ Rowland (Cremona), Nikos Zisis (Siena).

    1) Dee Brown is the league's mvp so far. No doubt about that. Once again, it's him who led Avellino to the OT victory vs Ferrara. And he's the main reason why surprisingly Avellino is still undefeated (6-0).
    2) EJ Rowland's stats are quite impressive too, he simply destroyed Treviso as his rating (37) witnesses. Just keep play this way, and your Bulgarian passport will let you earn some great money next year...
    3) Biella is often a hard nut to crash at home, even for Siena. So, they needed an unrealistic mighty-performance by Nikos Zisis to get the job done. Waiting for McIntyre to recover from injuries and get in shape, not bad having such a backup (10.8 pts + 14.8 rating in 19.3 mpg).

    - Varese-Virtus was such a battle field. Some players were out due to injury (Galanda, Slay; Collins, Blizzard, Fajardo), some others injured during the game (Scoonie Penn), others played hurt (Jobey Thomas), while a couple of players just joined the teams and were far from being in shape (Tusek, Righetti). As a result, I can't remember the last time I saw so many kids on the court in a Serie A game...

    - A couple of amazing runs. At the end of the 3rd quarter Napoli-Montegranaro's score was 48-48. Montegranaro outscored Napoli 3-30 in the 4th quarter, so that the final score said 51-78...Caserta was ahead by 15 on the road midway through the 4th quarter (65-80), but then simply melted and Teramo stunned them with an amazing 30-5 run, to win the game (92-85).

    - Varese just inked JR Reynolds (last season in France, with Asvel). According to some rumors, Caserta is close to sign French veteran Claude Marquis in order to replace injured Anatanas Kavaliauskas (Maurice Taylor didn't sign because he had a better offer from China). Napoli's still desperately looking for a PG.

P.J., It seems that Motiejunas is becoming stable player of the team. Why is he getting only 20 minutes? Is it because of his defence or other reasons?

Defense is one of the reasons. The kid still needs to improve on the defensive side, he had some problems in the first games, but it seems he's starting to get better from this point of view. I think he's gonna earn minutes as the season progresses, now he's learning a lot from experienced guys like Nicevic, Wallace and Hukic. The other reason is Benetton has some kind of a "platoon system", their coach loves to give all his players an opportunity, so all the players get playtime, but none of them remains too much time on the court.

Napoli's US players didn't return to Italy after the hollidays..
there was even an article about it on ESPN..
Tsaldaris signed for Montegranaro, Gabini will do the same with Jesi..
don't know what happened with Skele..
anyway as a result of that Napoli will play with their junior team until the end of the season..
    reason?
they want to play in legadue next year and they wouldn't be allowed to do that if they wouldn't play their games..
and there is nothing italian federation can do about them playing with junior team..
    result?
they are currently playing at home against Biella..
in 24-th minute it is 39-94
Muurinen and Spipoli who are only senior players left in the team are on the roster but are not playing and will leave the club..

Napoli's board said they will return 2/3 of the price of season ticket to their season ticket holders

edit: Napoli - Biella 54-124 FT

Biella outrebounded those kids 39-14 and managed to make them commit 26 turnovers..

Muurinen's first season abroad seems to go just fine. Atleast he got good games in the beginning of the season.

Any news about Muurinen's new team? Hopefully he's not coming back to Honka.

Davor Kus scored 10 three pointers yesterday for Benetton..
    10/14..
    impressive..
what is even more impressive is that both teams hit exactly the same number of threes from the same number of thries, 17-30.
    Benetton lost at the end..

Teramo cut James Thomas. The center has played just five games in Serie A this season and was replaced by Stanescu

I'd be interested to hear from Italian users what they think or have heard about the future of Montepaschi Siena.

If I'm not mistaken, the contracts of Sato, McIntyre and Eze are expiring, three players that have been a key to their success over the last years, especially the first two guys. The contract of Domercant expires as well.

If one of the big clubs really goes after Sato or McIntyre, Siena won't be able to match that. This is a different situation to Panathinaikos', who have the ressources to keep all the key players, but rather comparable to Baskonia's situation last summer.

If McIntyre and Sato leave, will they go after key players from league rivals again - like Gary Neal for example - in order to maintain domestic dominance?

They have David Moss who is loaned to Virtus. He is playing a good season there and I think he can really become a important player for Siena. Especially his defense is praised around the league. Too bad he played one of his worst games today AGAINST Siena. I think Siena still trusts on him and in case Sato leaves they already have a solid substitute.
Looking around te league I think Rowland is gonna be an intresting player to follow in the summer market. I really liked him at Eurobasket but now he definitely is convincing me. I never heard of him before but I like what he shows.
Aradori obviously is also a player to follow, he has become a great player this year. One of the leaders in Biella and not by taking 20 shots a game like some Americans around the league need. No, he is shooting an average of just 12 shots for 17.8ppg, thats UNREAL. He also rebounds very well for a SG and can also make plays. I think Siena could make a run for him. defenitely would take him over Domercant.
