    Default National Team Monickers

I've read of New Zealand Tallblacks, Australia Boomers, and of course, the U.S. Dream Teams and Redeem Teams. Now anyone know the other countries if they have? If none, what are your suggestions? It'd be cool if every nation has this monicker, especially for the coming World Championships.

The Philippine National Football Team adopted the monicker "Azkhals" which is actually the shortened name of "Mga Aso Kalye". In english it means "Mongrels". Some argue that it is just right since the Philippines is the melting pot of different ethnicities. We are a people of mixed race or mestizos. I think only some our Aeta brothers might be able they say they have no mixed blood. A great number of us are either descendants of Malay or Indonesian seafarers with a mix of Chinese, Spanish, Indian, Arab, Japanese and/or American blood.

Other names we could have are Agilas, Tamaraws, Tarsiers, Butandengs, Dugongs or Pythons.

Argentine federation had tried to impose the name Cóndores to the team, but never really stuck. That name had been given to a specific Argentina NT during the 60's, which had won a South American Championship with a very fast style of play, and bringing back the name seemed proper.

    That's true.

Actually, on demand from the main sponsor (Garanti) of Eurobasket 2001, a music band (Athena) composed a song, and named it "12 Giant Men". Then it became very popular and sticked on the national team afterwards.

Back in the 1950s and 60s (or even way before that), the international media everytime they reported a game in the World Championships or the Olympic Games, they used to called the Philippine teams as the Philippine Islands and called the players, the Islanders... maybe the best monicker for the RP Team is the "Philippine Islanders"... anyways, we have a thread about the RP Team's monicker in the Philippine forum... a lot of good suggestions over there...

It'll be interesting to see what moniker Team USA will adopt next year. They Redeemed themselves in the eyes of the fans here in the states, but a lot of people don't like the name Dream Team being over used. I don't consider 2000-2006 worthy of the name for example, some don't even think 94, or 96 are worthy of it.

Personally I wouldn't mind if they went back to calling themselves the Dream Team, I think so long as the majority of the Redeem Team comes back they've earned the title.
    Pistons 2011-2012

Current Mood: Just happy they're back.

Argentina' NTs of many sports have adopted nicknames:

Rugby: Pumas (this is a classic one, born in 1967)
Women's Field Hockey: Leonas (female Lions)
    Women's Volleyball: Panteras (Panthers)
Women's Floor Skating Hockey: Águilas (Eagles)
    Handball: Tigres (Tigers)
Football for Blind: Murciélagos (Bats; no kidding, they adopted the name themselves)

for some reason these names made me wonder in a very OT way.

fighting Trojans sounds like a new slogan for trojan condoms

Its not official or anything, i just thought it up. Trojans because of Troy and the Brown Bombers because our country also love boxing, this title originally from Joe Louis. And sometimes too, our basketball games turn into boxing matches.

I think the Philippine Tamaraws would be best. Especially since the tamaraw is a unique animal from the Philippines, and like its bull cousins, it is a very industrious beast that will aptly represent us people. If that happens, Barocca, our lead point guard, will still be a Tamaraw.

"Philippine Tamaraws", sounds good. Pandaka Pygmea would be a bad suggestion, worst is, The Sinarapans (scientific name: Mistichthys luzonensis).
