wohooo, trying to put a guilt trip on us ? that wont work. as far as i know the national team expense was shouldered by powerade not the PBA, and powerade gained advertising mileage. even if the PBA itself shouldered the national team expenses, what has that got to do with the japeth issue ? your mixing up the issue. why doesnt the PBA ban japeth now ? if he is guilty, go ahead ban him why all this soap opera?

so when is the PBA going to make a decision ? if japeth broke PBA rules then ban him ! , if not then the PBA board should make a decision nevertheless instead of "feeling out" or "reaching out" or using the media. very unprofessional of a so-called professional league. when will they make a decision ? next year? everyone is left hanging including the fans, the SBP ,everybody.

Jaworski is a PBA stalwart but when asked what are the chances of the PBA NT he replied, wag na kayong magpantasya. this means that he knows too well the capability of the PBA or incapability for that matter. this agaw buko association is just for provincial games. i have no problem with the pba earning decent money for their entertaining ways. just stay away from the international scene.

problem is what if he was the one of those who convinced japeth to join the draft and be drafted by BK but he did not say he had negotiations for his trade to SMB ..... nah probably not

There are still few PBA players who are skilled enough to participate in international games but the problem is if ever the PBA agrees to lend some of its players, the player may not be productive come game time because of lack of training and bonding with the rest of the team, ika nga kulang sa amuyan, and besides they PBA player will be completely burned out with all the practice with the NT and with his PBA mother team.

This is the reason why I think what Lito Alvarez is saying that Aguilar's participation in the NT will not be a problem is BS.

This is because of the game fixing in the college leagues

Just like High School Musical. Have you guys watched this Disney Movie with your kids? where the storyline includes most valuable player of the school's basketball team (Zac Elfron) is torn between basketball and showbiz.

After that, it was a complete downhill for the Philippines. The Philippines only managed to win in the 1986 Asian Basketball Confederation with a team composed of collegiate and amateur standouts with naturalized players as reinforcements that trained under the Northern Consolidated Cement team similar to the SBP/Smart-Gilas program today.

The only shining moment for the PBA in Asian competitions was the 1990 Asian Games Team of Jaworksi composed of recently turned pros Caidic, Lim, Calma, Magsanoc, Paras, Patriminio and Codinera who were at that time still indoctrinated and skilled enough to play international basketball.
In my own honest opinion I am more proud of the all-amateur team that earned the "golden" Bronze Medal in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. In the semifinals, South Korea barely beat the Philippines, 103-102, and robbed coach Joe Lipa's squad of an outright silver medal. A bum call prevented Allan Caidic from going for the winner in the last few seconds. Other members of that team were Samboy Lim, Jerry Codinera, Harmon Codinera, Alvin Patrimonio, Glenn Capacio, Dindo Pumaren, Eric Altamirano, Ronnie Magsanoc, Jojo Lastimosa, Jack Tanuan and Elmer Reyes. With Benjie Paras, Dondon Ampalayo and Al Solis as alternates.

With the Naturalized players Dennis Still, Jeff Moore and Chip Moore gone after Ambassador Danding Cojuangco left due to the aftermath of the 1986 EDSA Revolution and other NCC pool members Hector Calma, Franz Pumaren, Yves Dignadice, Alfie Almario, Jun Tan, Pido Jarencio and Tonichi Yturri joining the returning San Miguel Franchise late in 1986 under the name of Magnolia Cheese, that 1986 Asian Games team was not expected to perform well more even get a medal. Philippine Media was even rediculing this team as it performed badly in that year's William Jones Cup comparing it with the San Miguel Beer (NCC) team which won the 1985 Jones Cup. In the 1985 Jones Cup, Caidic played in the San Miguel Beer-Philippines’ overtime victory against the USA, coached by the legendary Gene Keady, in the finals. His shooting mentor, Arthur "Chip" Engelland, scored 43 points while Caidic scored 21, to lead the Filipinos in a 108-100 overtime victory to capture the Jones Cup title. Keady, later, told Ron Jacobs that he had the highest respect for two Filipino cagers whom he called 'Heckle and Jeckle' (referring to Allan Caidic and Samboy Lim)

Despite no body giving them a benefit of the doubt, this Joe Lipa team percevered and worked hard in order to get better.

Ah yes that team, how can I ever forget (starting to feel goosebumps again). Outstanding team, great players, great effort. Results of two great systems, Lipa and Jacobs.

I can still remember my college classmates who were PBA diehard fanbois making fun with that team with Dindo and Ronnie at point, teasing me and calling the pair as "kangkarots" LoLZ! Telling me that team will go nowhere without the 2 American reinforcements. But in the end my diehard PBA fanboi classmates were mad with the bum charging call against Caidic hahahah!

I remember a number of Asian teams not knowing what to do whenever Joe Lipa used Magsanoc, Pumaren and Altamirano all at the same time as this troika relived their days with San Beda Red Cubs and even if they were small compared to their defenders they were really fast and was generating one steal after another that feed either Samboy, Elmer or Alvin in making easy lay-ups or setting-up Caidic with his patented long shots.

Yes kuya he is with the 1984 NCC Team. And contrary to what some people are saying, Peter Aguilar is a winner. He is the one standing between Jun Tan and Alfie Almario. Paras is #13 between Chip and Teddy Alfarero (RIP).

Bro Paras was invited but never became a member of NCC. The one in between Jun and Alfie (RIP) is Dante Sapalo who was also a part of the De La Salle Green Archers at that time. Number 13 is indeed Peter.

in 1984 Paras was still a 2nd year High School student, he was invited in 1986 after he led the UP Maroons to the UAAP Championship for the 1986-87 School Year.

In 1983 was a graduating high school senior in San Beda together with my classmates Ronnie Magsanoc and Eric Altamirano when Benjie was our Freshman Center for the Red Cubs. Then I was a college freshman in La Salle when the NCC team of Ron Jacobs hold their practices at the La Salle Gym as the core of that NCC Team was also enrolled by La Salle. And Dante Sapalo was a classmate of mine in one subject.

I remember Chip taking up Pilipino classes as he wants to learn the language and our customs. Jeff Moore also attended some subjects.

Oh, I didn't know. I was just like looking at their faces, who Paras and Japeth looked liked with the NCC photo. Awesome picture.

Wow, I'm beginning to envy you for knowing these great players. Their world that time simply revolves around family, school and the National Team. Even Engelland and Moore did their own homework just to bond with the team. Its really different when your aim for 1 goal and that is to win for country, no distractions from other obligations (motherclubs). Grabe noon.

I did one time had the chance to talk with Dindo Pumaren, we were on a plane going to Los Angeles. I introduced myself, told him we had a common friend Jojo Valdez who is also a San Beda Alumnus, 1985. We had a good conversation, he told me unforgettable stories during his National stints and some funny stuff with his fellow Red Cubs Magsanoc, Altamirano and especially Paras.

SALUD CONDEMNS PBA PLAN TO FORM NATIONAL TEAM
    Posted on 03 September 2009

Former PBA Commissioner Rudy Salud who is regarded alongside the late Leo Prieto as the finest leaders of the pro league has come out strongly against the plan by some board members who are pushing for the PBA to form the national team for such international tournaments as the FIBA Championships and the Asian Games.

The proposal was made by PBA chairman Lito Alvarez with the support of Sta Lucia Realty’s Buddy Encarnado with the latest being Coca C ola’s JB Baylon who first indicated it could not be done properly aside from the costs to the PBA teams but in an apparent change of heart now apparently supports the idea.

In a text message Baylon said he had been furnished a copy of “what appears to be a part of the SBP Constitution that refers to elite tournaments including the Asian Games, Olympics etc and rests responsibility on the formation of the team on the professional league. I suppose that’s the PBA . So apparently we are mandated by the PBA itself.”

Salud noted that even before he became Commissioner he was “ very outspoken” against the idea of the PBA forming the national team and always supported the idea “to train a national pool for international competitions.”

Salud recalled that he had even “proposed to the then PBA board that they set aside the income from the All Star Games which used to be big with big income during my time and the board unofficially agreed to set aside a certain percentage as development fund precisely to be given to the national pool” that was to be set up at that time by the Basketball Association of the Philippines which was the accredited National Sports Association.

He also recalled that aside from the financial support the PBA was “willing to accommodate the RP team as a guest team in the PBA conferences to hone them up but not get the PBA players and disrupt the league and loose revenues in the process.”

Salud said history has proven that every time a PBA team played in an international tournament and lost the PBA “suffered” in terms of attendance and income while the TV franchise holder also lost revenues because of the poor attendance and television ratings.

The former Commissioner and one-time legal counsel who drafted the PBA Constitution and By Laws, served as the founding secretary general of the World Boxing Council and also drew up its Constitution and By Laws stressed “I want a national pool and I don’t want the PBA to be disrupted and I want the PBA to have a system of helping the national pool.”

Salud at the same time criticized Commissioner Sonny Barrios for allowing so-called sister teams to circumvent the ban on direct trading by using a third team as a conduit which has happened often.

Salud said “why does the Commissioner allow that circumvention through a third party. If it smells bad, it is bad.”

The eminent lawyer pointed out that the Commissioner should also clamp down on trading or selling of players because “he has a bigger right to ensure that there is competitive balance in the league because that is a service to the public, instead of going after the neck of a player like Japeth Aguilar because he (Barrios) is serving the interests of a team not the general public.”

Arguing against the plan to fall back on the Commissioner’s general powers in the Aguilar case, Salud said “the general powers apply when there is no rule and the rule is generalized” even as he reminded the PBA that there are specific rules covering the case of a player being drafted and not signing up with the team that drafted him.

Salud’s comments came even as Sta Lucia traded Denok Miranda to last conference champions San Miguel Beer claiming it was because of salary cap problems effectively indicating that San Miguel Beer’s star-studded team which only recently also acquired Arwind Santos from Burger King who received the maximum salary, apparently had no salary cap problems which was met with disbelief by some board members.
