Default Group B, Gameday 1: Germany - France

The young German side - free of any pressure - versus France, who, as ironically the last qualificant for this tournament, are the clear favourites in this group.

For Germany, keep an eye on the 2.09m small forward Robin Benzing and defensive 2/3 backup Elias Harris, both born 1989. Heiko Schaffartzik has been [quite surprisingly, for me] playing decent basketball in preperation as well, a small point guard who can make long contested three pointers off the dribble.

France better do with a balanced team effort than just relying on the play of Tony Parker.

I expect a solid win for France in the 10 to 20 point range.

France by 17 is what I see here. Not a single lineup position where the Germans could claim the advantage

I would play a lot of inside game against France because they are missing a tall center and Parker would need some special treatment in defense.

Who is the best defender at the perimeter in the German team?

But France still wins this one by 10-20!

I am on the same page as wardjdim here. Everything but a smooth and comfortable double-digit win for France would be highly surprising.

Hamann. You could try Harris, but considering he played power forward last season, it's a stretch. Parker is much quicker.

France on their A game is fierce, but they may just be one of the more inconsistent teams in the tournament. Picking France by 15+ with the caveat that it wouldn't surprise me at all if this was a close game.

Now, replace Clooney with German NT, martini with Dirk and the hot chicks with Eurobasket and you get the whole idea.

    I'll say France 70, Germany 58

Probably France by a solid two-digit margin. I'm still hoping though, because IMO France is severely overrated. They remind me very much of the mediocre USA teams in recent years. Second- to third-tier NBA players, lots of athletism, but basically no shooters. Play zone defense for 40 minutes to take away Parker's drives as far as possible, slow down the whole game and they'll struggle heavily. Germany, however, doesn't look like the team that can do this successfully. They have troubles to score in set play setting themselves. (Has Bauermann ever played zone in preperation?)

Not that I know of. He isn't particularly fond of zone defenses in general.

I hope that Antoine Diot gets a lot of playing time. Another 1989 born prospect, had very good games in qualification.

Not sure if I support your Team USA theory, uhg80. This team has four NBA players, one of them being a star, another one a key guy on his team. USA 2002 had Ben Wallace [at the peak of his career], Paul Pierce, Andre Miller, Michael Finley, Reggie Miller, Jermaine O'Neal etc, 2004 had Duncan, Boozer, Odom, Iverson [when he was still appreciated] among others. All of those guys were key players on their teams, some even franchise players. I'd agree on the missing shooting qualities though.

Admitted, the Team USA comparision is kinda forced and not exactly accurate. I mainly used it to add some bias, out of frustration over the whole "most NBA players on the roster, gold medal candidate blabla" I've read too much of in German media over the last few days.

I expect an easy win 4 France. Germany better save their best 4 the rest of the games, where they definitely have better chances.

Everyone is tipping France as a medal contender but right now they are having much trouble facing a Dirk-less Germany..

It seems that France might encounter major problems while facing teams with strong front lineups.
