Default Group B, Gameday 1: Russia - Latvia

Two teams with a roller-coaster preparation cycle meet each other in the opening game of Eurobasket 2009 in Gdansk. Russia, the defending champion, has to acomplish has a mission impossible to retain the title - the team has literally lost their starting five of the golden 2007 team. So now the squad is completely renewed, but according to the latest interviews of the delegation, the thoughts of title defending still remains.

Latvia has called up one of the strongest national rosters ever. But in some period of preparation, things began to mess up. Some players got bad injuries, some players violated the discipline rules and got ejected from the squad. The morale of the team might be called "unstable", but what else could rise that morale better than a victory agaist Russia? Maybe on Monday the Latvian fans will forget the bad things and will be bringing flowers to Russian Embasy in Riga.

    The official info:
    September 7th, 2009. Monday 16:30 CET
    Hala Oliwia, Gdansk

    TV broadcast in Latvia: TV3
TV broadcast in Russia: NTV Sport?

What bad things between people? Things could not be any better.

Latvia will win this one, I expect a lot from my hero Kambala. I hope he does not let me down.

Latvia should win this one, though with all the funky chemistry going on in the team, who knows?

That's one of the best games of the day

I say Latvia, just because they have more talent, although no-one knows what to expect from them. Let's say a close game. 3 point win

I'm expecting tough and interesting battle today and Latvia winning by slight margin. You cannot not love Kambala

Btw - how many suporters are coming to Gdansk? I've heard smth 'bout 1500 Latvians. Is it true? And what about Russians?

I'm amazed by the results of the poll! So many people believing in Latvia...
Actually I voted 4 Latvia too, but it's part of a conspiracy theory: Latvia beats Russia in a close game, Russia beats Germany cleanly and the Germans have their best game against Latvia blowing them out and eliminating them(still if the Germans think clever in this scenario, they should try 2 win by as many as they need 2 take Latvia with them in the 2nd round and carry their victory against Latvia with them).
Your time is up my time is now,
you can't see me my time is now...

Seems that Latvia has some internal problems...They started preparations for this championship well but something is going wrong there...Russia will miss almost all key players but I still belive in Blatt...I think that Russians are stronger competitiors and this wont be only basketball game, we also can expect to see some judo or wrestling

Where can we get play by play for this game? For stats and score? FIBA doesn't have it...

when Bykov scores 16 points in one half then you should be really worried about your team's defence..
-3 at HT is not even that bad ering how considering how bad they played..
Kambala doing some big damage to russians.. Mozgov simply can't defend him and he is already with 3 fouls..
    Sokolov also can't contain Kambala..
as for Russia, this is their best game offensively since the start of the preparations..
but I guess you play good as much as your opponent let's you to.. and latvians are really poor defensively.. always running late..
Latvians are the one with more talent no doubt about it but you don't need talent to play some defence..
nice atmosphere in the hall though..

It seems like the Russians are cruising all first half. Latvia better play better or they are going to be blown out in the second half.

Great game by Bykov. 4/5 3pt so far. McCarthy is doing a great job too.

Latvia is once again led by Kambala.

    Russia 58 latvia 52 after 3 quarters.

    Go Latvia!
