They already qualified via the Olympics, and they worked out a deal so Mexico (who wanted to be the host) could play despite not qualifying. Didn't work out so great given that Mexico wound up not hosting in the end but that's really it.
Part of it is unlike other tournaments, the Americas is regarded just as a qualifier. No one really cares so much about winning it.
The Rules learned in the Prediction game.
1: Brazil is always disappointing
2: Never dismiss Argentina solely because of age.
3: Never bet against Spain in a knockout game, unless it is against the US.

I think it was a bad decision. They could very well have put those young NBA players to gain experience...
I think it was for the best. If USA doesn't care about it, give the spot to someone who wants to make the best of it.
