Default From FIBA - Vazquez pulls out for Spain.

BARCELONA (EuroBasket 2011) - Spain center Fran Vazquez has decided not to play for the country this summer when the national team tries to defend its EuroBasket title.

The Barcelona big man, who just helped his club side capture the ACB title, competed for Spain last year at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

He has contacted Spain coach Sergio Scariolo and informed him of his desire to take the summer off.

"I have asked the national team coach not to include me in the team," Vazquez said in a statement.

"I think the best thing for me is to not play the EuroBasket and rest this summer so as to face next season with all guarantees."

Vazquez is the third player from last year’s team who will not play.

Veterans Jorge Garbajosa and Alex Mumbru just announced their retirement from the national side last week.

Spain will have Pau Gasol back in the squad as they take aim at the London Olympics.

They will be in Group A with Turkey, EuroBasket hosts Lithuania, Great Britain, Poland and a team that comes through the Additional Qualifying Round – Portugal, Finland or Hungary.

The sides that reach the Final of the EuroBasket will book places in the London Games while the teams that come third, fourth, fifth and six will play in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Nobody expected Sergio or Raül. The list is, except Xavi Rey, what everybody expected.

Ibaka speaks Spanish and he played here three years. In all the interviews he always says he's very grateful with Spain because he was formed here and that's why he wants to play with the NT.

Anyway, I don't expect he gets the passport before the Eurobasket. Everybody thought in Mirotić; probably Scariolo will call him if Ibaka fails (85,453% probability).

After Samb, Mirotic, Fall & the Diop brothers, Spain is trying to convince several foreign youngsters to play for its youth national teams in the upcoming years. But as in Diop brothers case, players were offered to obtain spanish citizenship very early in order to be considered as local and not naturalized players. After Adnan Omeragic ('96 Unelco Tenerife) who has bosnian roots but who is born in Spain and is therefore a legitimate candidate for Spanish U15 NT, Spanish basketball Federation is also recruiting 3 kids from Bosnia Stefan Djurasinovic, Nedim Djedovic & Sandro Gacic.

Stefan Djurasinovic ('95) is an ethnic Serb, who plays for Estudiantes and who applied for the Spanish citizenship in order to play for Spain. Djurasinovic was born & grew up in Bosnia where his family lived as refugee since its departure from Croatia.

Bosnian NT player Nihad Djedovic's younger brother, Nedim Djedovic ('97 Barcelona), who is considered to be the best young player of his generation in Spain also had an offer of the Spanish basketball association. Nedim who was born in Germany, seems to be closer to Spanish NT.

Last but not the least, Caja Laboral propsect, Sandro Gacic ('96) who pointed out several times that he wants to play only for Bosnia won't play at the U16 European Championship due to private reasons. He also had an offer to play for Spain. Moreover, his younger brother Armano on Caja Laboral radar.

Coming soon, Spain NT with Mirotic or Ibaka, Diop x 2, Djurasinovic, Gacic, Djedovic. FIBA is a joke.

It's all so embarrassing... Apparently, the quota of five Spanish players per team in the ACB is gone, thanks to the EU, so these moves (at least with Balkan players) should stop. There would be no real incentive to become Spanish now. Otherwise, I would have to think that the Spanish Federation is giving money to these kids to convince them, which would be even more pathetic than it is now, and an insult to the real Spaniards, who have proved to be able players in the past years.

It the past, as result of realizing how deep is the Spanish roaster and how many good players stay away from FIBA tournaments, I played with the idea that Spain would have 2 NTs - one Catalan and one of the rest. It would divide the NT to more or less two equal teams.
Now it seems that you could divide the NT to 3 NTs in the future, also based on ethnic

Apparently he took a lower-than-usual salary when he signed for the Spanish NT. On return, his buyout would be almost prohibitive.

Indeed after the World Championships there was the feeling that Scariolo wouldn't continue. You could read interviews with the top executives of the Federation and also articles written by Federation-friendly journalists with heavy critizism, either openly (journalists) or between the lines (executives), like preparing the environment for a coach change. They probably tried to force Scariolo to give up the job, but he didn't want to.

Well, he'll be there just to enforce the practices really. It's not like he has any chance to join the final squad unless there are several injuries.
