Interview with Terrence Shannon (201-PF)(USA) EX-Anibal Foreigner With Daily-Star

BEIRUT: Playing for the first time in the Lebanese Basketball League, Terrence Shannon, a professional American player, made a lasting impact.

He imposed his style of play on the league, despite only playing for half a season before leaving his team, Anibal Zahle, to compete in Puerto Rico, where his current team leads the season’s standings with two games left.

Lebanese fans were loath to see the back of a player who scored freely, wowed the fans with his skills and finally made Anibal Zahle a relevant team again. The feeling was mutual.

“It is a pretty competitive league,” said Shannon, speaking from Puerto Rico. “You always have your few dominant teams in the league, but the group of foreigners that was brought in made the competition level great and a lot of games were really interesting to watch.”

For all of the good things Shannon had to say about the Lebanese league, there was one thing he could never accept.

“To be honest, better referees should be brought and be taught how to call the game,” Shannon told The Daily Star.

“In a league that’s one of the best in Asia, the last thing you need is to question if the referees are at the right level to call the games. That was a big problem in the league this season,” Shannon said.

As one of many Americans in the league, Shannon developed strong relationships with his fellow expatriates.

The former Anibal Zahle forward believes his countrymen have helped level out the playing field in the league.

In just 17 games in the Lebanese league, Shannon cultivated a reputation as reliable 20-10 player, finishing with averages of 21 points per game and 12 rebounds per game, including a 32-point, 18-rebound performance against Hoops Club.

Among other things, the level of coaching impressed Shannon, particularly his Anibal coach – now Sagesse coach – Tony Vujanic.

“I think my Coach Tony Vujanic was impressive defensively. We really were not a big group, and to almost finish in the top four was considered as a great job,” he said. The player also reserved praised Mouttahed’s coach Paul Caughter.

Concerning the best import in the league, Shannon gives a surprising if confident answer. “Calvin Warner was very impressive and although his team didn’t make the final four, he led them to the final eight and I personally think he was the real import of the year.”

The reason players like Shannon are brought to Lebanon is not only to increase the quality of the teams but also to act as mentors and teachers to local players who haven’t enjoyed the benefit of an education in the American college system.

Teammate Charles Tabet is a young Lebanese player who has flourished in the league at a tender age, thanks to the direction of more experienced counterparts.

“He played major minutes at the end of the season, proving to be a dominant force for his team, considering that it was his first year playing pro basketball. He will only get better with time and will eventually be a national team starter in my opinion,” Shannon said.

About the difference of level between the Puerto Rican league, where he is currently in action, and the Lebanese league, Shannon stated: “I’d say the level in Puerto Rico is better because a lot of players performing here played high school and college in the States, helping them advance their game more before playing professional. But there are a lot of talented players in Lebanon too.”

On the subject of a potential move back to the Lebanese League, it is very clear where Shannon stands.

“I will definitely have no problems coming back to Lebanon. It is not too much of a culture change, and a lot of people speak English which really helps to adjust. The food is also great out there. If I had an offer in the future, I would really consider it and see what happens.”
