Good win for the Knicks... I like the progress they have made from last season and Amare seems to have fit in the system perfectly well (especially since he is reunited with this coach Mike D'Antoni who is now starting to show what he can do with this Knicks franchise and bring them back to their glorious days of the 70's+90's )

Christmas surprise: Knicks win one with defense

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer 12 hours, 43 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Knicks slipped on green uniforms and looked like an entirely different team.
A little like the one that used to protect the paint at Madison Square Garden.
Amare Stoudemire(notes) and Raymond Felton(notes) each scored 20 points, and the Knicks limited the Chicago Bulls to two baskets in the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter, pulling away for a 103-95 victory Saturday.
Swatting shots and picking off passes with a dominant defense that would have made the 1990s Knicks proud, New York didn’t allow a field goal for more than 8 minutes after the game was tied early in the final period.

“We did a beautiful job defensively,” Stoudemire said. “They’re a really good defensive team, but for us, we’ve been talking about defense now for the past—actually the whole year—but more so the past week about communicating, helping the helper, so it’s really showing.”
Wilson Chandler(notes) and Danilo Gallinari(notes) added 15 apiece for the Knicks, the NBA’s highest-scoring team but 28th in defense. Yet it’s been hard to tell lately they struggle on that end, as they held Oklahoma City to 98 points on Wednesday and followed by blocking 10 shots and coming up with 12 steals in this one.
Stoudemire anchored the defensive effort, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking six shots. Rookie Landry Fields(notes) finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks, who improved to 21-25 on Christmas. Felton had 12 assists and Chandler also grabbed 10 boards.
Wearing Christmas colors, the Knicks beat Chicago for the second time this season, winning the series for the first time since 2000-01.
“It’s real important because we’re chasing them. Hopefully we can do that,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said. “One thing is you know we play them three games. We won two so we get the tiebreaker, so now that helps. It’s the little things. A lot of basketball to be played but you’ve got to beat these teams, at home especially.”
Carlos Boozer(notes) had 26 points and 19 rebounds for the Bulls, who lost for just the second time in 11 games.
The Bulls flopped in their first Christmas game since 1997, committing 22 turnovers that led to 23 points. They fell to 9-6 on the holiday, including 2-3 against the Knicks.
“To their credit, I thought they played good defense,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “I think we have to execute when we are being doubled-teamed. We’ve got to make plays. We didn’t do that tonight.”
Derrick Rose(notes) had 25 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Bulls, but also committed seven turnovers. He was stopped a couple of times by Stoudemire, nodding his head in agreement after his shot was blocked in the first half, and then getting hit on it after a drive in the second, when the two exchanged words.
“That’s basketball. He was trying to stop me going to the hole. It’s just a basketball play,” Rose said. “It’s going to get physical, especially if someone keeps driving. That’s what he’s supposed to do.”
Back-to-back baskets by Ronnie Brewer(notes) and Rose tied it at 87 with 10:11 left before the Knicks, who were allowing 107 points per game, started playing the defense basketball that was once their trademark.
Chandler and Felton each had two baskets in a 10-0 run as Chicago missed 11 of its first 13 shots in the period. Chandler’s bucket made it 97-87 before Boozer ended the Bulls’ drought with 1:52 remaining.
“I didn’t pay attention to (the drought), but I could tell our defense was doing great,” Felton said. “We were getting turnovers, shots that they normally probably hit they weren’t hitting. We were getting out on fast breaks, running the ball back at them. It’s just fun basketball.”
The Bulls later got within six, but missed a chance to get closer when Kurt Thomas threw a pass out of bounds, and the Knicks held on to win the matchup of teams who have been the best of the East lately outside of Boston and Miami.
Neither team pulled off the major free agent score it was looking for, but the moves they did make have paid off nicely. Stoudemire and Felton have the Knicks (18-12) off to their best start in a decade and searching for their first playoff berth since 2004. The Bulls are 9-4 since Boozer debuted after missing the first 15 games with a broken right hand.
With the Bulls wearing red, the court certainly looked festive. But the basketball was pure ugly at the start.
The Bulls offset their nine first-quarter field goals by turning it over nine times, handing the Knicks 10 points that helped New York take a 21-20 lead. Chicago’s sloppy play continued early into the second, when Boozer powered into the lane and shot the ball over the basket and out of bounds—not a turnover, but served the same purpose.
But the Bulls, despite missing injured rebounding leader Joakim Noah, made up for their struggles by overwhelming the Knicks on the backboards, outrebounding them 31-21 in the half and converting 12 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points. Boozer made a jumper in front of his bench as time expired to give Chicago a 54-52 halftime lead.
The Knicks then hit six 3-pointers in the third quarter, punishing the Bulls from behind the arc like they did while ringing up 120 points in their victory in Chicago last month—highest total the Bulls have allowed this season—and took an 85-83 lead to the fourth.
Notes: Thibodeau was a Knicks assistant for seven years. … Felton has had double-digit assists in six straight games, three shy of Micheal Ray Richardson’s franchise record set from Dec. 23, 1979 to Jan. 8, 1980.

Amare Stoudemire (1), who also chipped in with 20 points, dunks on Chicago's Luol Deng in the first half.

Despite comments from Lakers coach Phil Jackson criticizing the NBA for scheduling games on Christmas Day, the Knicks likely will be lobbying hard to play again on the holiday if the outcome is the same as it was Saturday.
In perhaps their most complete game of the season, the Knicks (18-12) beat one of the hottest teams in the league, topping the Chicago Bulls, 103-95, at a raucous Garden in front of a national TV audience.
Raymond Felton did a lot for his All-Star candidacy, outdueling the shifty Derrick Rose in the second half when Rose seemed to lose focus and the Knicks, wearing holiday green uniforms, put on a defensive clinic. Felton finished with 20 points, 12 assists and five steals and helped force Rose into seven turnovers. Rose finished with 25 points, eight assists and six steals but had just two points in the fourth quarter when the Bulls (18-10) went over eight minutes without scoring. The Bulls had won nine of their last 10 coming in.
"We're really playing good defense right now," Felton said. "Our offense is clicking right now also. Our defense has really been great over these past couple of games. That's why we're winning games. We beat a good team today. They are one of the best teams in the league right now, in my opinion. So it's just a good win for us, especially on Christmas Day."
While Rose made just 12 of 28 shots, his teammate, Carlos Boozer also struggled, going 11-of-25 for 26 points. In contrast, Amar'e Stoudemire finished with 20 points on 10-of-18 shooting while blocking six shots and grabbing 10 rebounds. As a team, the Knicks blocked 10 shots while making 12 of 22 attempts from deep.
"The obvious goal is for us to protect the paint, to protect the inside," Stoudemire said. "It's a total team effort out there defensively and we did a pretty good job today."
In a telling sequence midway through the first quarter, Stoudemire blocked a Rose drive and then stared him down as the two briefly bumped chests. After Rose hit an 18-footer that tied the score at 87 with 10:10 left in the game, the Bulls didn't score again until Boozer hit a baby hook with 1:52 to go. Stoudemire had two key defensive plays down the stretch. First, he blocked a shot by Luol Deng, and on the next sequence he drew a charge on Boozer with 3:16 left and the Knicks leading 95-87.
The Knicks took an 89-87 lead on a Felton layup, and Wilson Chandler scored 10 of his team's final 12 points to close it out. Even the Knicks' bench chipped in, with Toney Douglas and Shawne Williams hitting key shots.
"It's about getting better and learning chemistry between teammates and going through the ups and downs," Stoudemire said of his team's learning curve. "Then, that carries over the postseason, and that's when it all counts."
Former Knick Kurt Thomas got the start for Chicago with New York product Joakim Noah, sitting out after surgery on his right thumb. Thomas made his presence felt, doling out a series of hard screens and box-outs, one time flattening Ronny Turiaf early in the fourth quarter. He finished with four points, six rebounds, three steals and five fouls.
Knicks rookie Landry Fields continued to impress. He had arguably the play of the game with an acrobatic running putback of a missed free throw from Turiaf, who was trying to complete a three-point play with 8:29 left in the second quarter. Fields sprinted in from halfcourt, grabbed the miss with his back to the basket and dropped it in while getting fouled. Fields hit the free throw as part of his 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Danilo Gallinari finished with 15 points, making three-of-four from long range.
"I thought Gallo in the second half was good," Mike D'Antoni. "He hit two or three threes that opened things up. Wilson Chandler in the fourth quarter was excellent. Both defensively and offensively, he was huge. Then, the bench chipped in. A good effort from everybody against a good team."

    Knicks Team Report

Yahoo! Sports - 1 hour, 13 minutes ago

From Who to Hondo? Knicks rookie Landry Fields' impressively intelligent, all-around ability has Donnie Walsh promoting a Hall of Fame comparison, which, Walsh said, was derived from people he spoke with recently. "He reminds them of John Havlicek when he first game into the league," Walsh told the New York Post. "And I think that's right on. He was like that: a great athlete, known as a defensive player who improved his shooting and he got along, but was always a good all-around player who just kept getting better. A great all-around player who was a key to those Celtics. I think Landry can be that."
Fields, the 39th overall pick who was one of the lowest-rated players going into the June draft, has been a revelation so far this season. He had yet another double-double (his eighth of the season), with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the Knicks' Christmas Day win against the Bulls.
Fields was plus-10 in the game and for the season is plus-126, which leads the Knicks. His 10.5 points per game is fourth among rookies this season, and his 7.6 rebounds per game leads all NBA guards. He had a spectacular offensive rebound, plus the foul, when he charged in for a free throw miss in the second quarter against Chicago.
But even with all of that, is comparing the 6-7 guard to a Hall of Fame legend just 30 games into his career just a bit premature?
"You're talking about one of the all-time greats, so let's not get too carried away," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I love Landry to death, but Havlicek was special over 15 years. He has some of the same characteristics: running, athletically. Now it's up to him to keep getting better like Havlicek did. Again, I see similarities."
Walsh wasn't ready to retreat from it. Clearly, he is proud of his second-round gem. Fields is right there with Antonio Davis as Walsh's most impressive second-round discoveries.
"(Fields) moves without the ball, all over the floor," Walsh said. "I'm talking about Halicek as a rookie. Then he went to become a great scorer. He has all the ingredients Havlicek had at that age."
The Knicks can only hope the comparison holds true for the rest of his career.
KNICKS 103, BULLS 95: Wilson Chandler scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, and the Knicks held the Bulls without a field goal for an 8:10 span of the final quarter in the first game of the NBA's Christmas Day schedule. A pull-up by Derrick Rose tied the score at 87 with 10:11 left, but then the Knicks reeled off 10 straight points as the Bulls failed to score on 11 straight possessions. The Knicks (18-12) led 97-87 when Carlos Boozer ended Chicago's drought with a turnaround jumper. Boozer finished with 26 points and 19 rebounds for the Bulls (18-10).

    • Recently it was Amar'e Stoudemire who had gone streaking, with a franchise-record nine straight 30-point performances. Now it's Raymond Felton's turn. He dished out 12 assists against the Bulls to make it six straight games that he has recorded at least 10 assists. He is three games shy of the franchise record (nine) set by Michael Ray Richardson during the 1979-80 season. Felton also had 20 points, which made it his ninth 20-point, 10-assist game of the season. That is second to only Deron Williams (12) in the NBA.
    • This was the NBA-leading 46th time the Knicks played on Christmas Day. They are 21-25 all-time on the holiday and 20-19 at Madison Square Garden. Their first-ever game on Christmas came in 1947, when they defeated Providence 89-75. The win was their first on Christmas Day since 2001, when they beat the Raptors 102-94 at the Garden.
    Quote To Note:

"I can adjust a little bit. I can open my presents up at 7 o'clock at night instead of 7 o'clock in the morning."
—Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni on playing on Christmas Day.

Ouch! That hurts. He really spreads the floor for them.

I'm still not sold on the NY Knicks. Their most impressive win last month was against a struggling Oklahoma team. Otherwise, they've lost to Boston, Miami, and Orlando. They're beating all the easy teams, but they can't beat the play-off teams. They also haven't had very many Western Conference opponents or taken a long road trip yet.

You write that and then later in the day they beat the team with the best record in the NBA...............but really, I agree with you. I'm not sold on NY. They are improved over last year but they have had an easy schedule up to this point.

    I know. I'm great with predictions, aren't I?

In fairness though, I think NY got a little lucky. They shot 55% last night, which is 9% higher than their season average.

Yes, you're right that they've had a pretty easy schedule. I guess the hard games must be coming up soon. Obviously they're better than last year with Stoudemire there, and Felton/Chandler/Gallinari playing much, much better.

And truthfully, they're a lot better than what I thought at the start of the season. I've never been a fan of Stoudemire, so I didn't think he would make a huge impact. D'Antoni is showing that he's a great coach and these guys are showing improvement.

New York Knicks President of Basketball Operations, Donnie Walsh has assured forward Wilson Chandler of a guaranteed contract signing for the 2011 Off-season to compensate for not signing Chandler to a contract extension from last off-season.

In an interview with the NYpost, Walsh said:

"Wilson's a restricted free agent and I'm going to sign him. .He's a helluva player."

Totally agree. I thought Felton/Chandler/Gallinari would show modest progression, but Felton in particular has looked great this year. What wasn't expected on my end either was how good Stoudemire has been. Between his injury issues, his low career rebounding rates and the fact that he played with Steve Nash all those years I didn't expect much but he has proven me very, very wrong.

Amar’e on His Return to Phoenix

Here’s some video of Knicks practice from Thursday in which Amar’e Stoudemire and coach Mike D’Antoni talk about their return to Phoenix for Friday’s game.
In other Knicks news, president Donnie Walsh says he wants to sign Wilson Chandler to a long-term contract. Chandler, who dropped 31 points in Tuesday’s win over the San Antonio Spurs, could seek a five-year deal worth $60 million, according to the Post.
