This just in! FIBA has just lifted the suspension handed to Thailand. In light of this event, it is likely that Thailand will field a team in the upcoming SEA Games on November 11th.

There are eight teams confirmed for the SEA Games. Vietnam is one of them, and they're bracketed with Philippines, Thailand, and Cambodia. It's great to see Cambodia and Myanmar in the tournament.

26th SEA Games: Draw completed as basketball returns to SEA Games fold

JAKARTA, Indonesia (26th SEA Games): Basketball competitions return to the SEA Games fold after a break of one edition – when Laos the hosts of the previous edition decided to cut down the number of disciplines – with 10 teams in the men’s section and five among women in fray for the medals.

The draw for the men’s competition was completed on Tuesday under the supervision of FIBA Asia Secretary General and the Technical Delegate for basketball event Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock (third from left in the pic above).

The basketball event of the 26th SEA Games will also feature the National Teams of Thailand who were recently reinstated into the FIBA Asia family after a suspension.

“We are all very excited for a lot of reasons,” said Dato’ Yeoh after the draw.

“For one, basketball is back in the SEA Games. Thailand’s suspension has been revoked. And to me it means an additional competition of very high quality in our region,” he said.

“With the ABL being a grand success over the last two years, teams from South East Asia have improved tremendously and their performance in recent FIBA Asia competitions is an example. I am sure the competition at SEA Games will be another step,” he said.

Groupings for the Preliminary Round – Men’s competition

Group A: Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam.

Group B: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar

The top two teams from each group will advance to the cris-cross semifinals.

Five teams: Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar will battle it out in the women’s section in a single group round-robin at the end of which the medals will be decided.

The 26th SEA Games is scheduled to be inaugurated by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Nov 11 and will run till Nov 22. Basketball games will be played between Nov 14-20.

I agree! This is going to be the very first test of how contribution the ABL has made to the growth of Basketball in the region. This should also make the Philippine campaign more interesting or challenging.

i'd be disappointed if we can't win by an average of 25 points. Philippines just has no competition in this region.

For the first time, the Philippines did not participate in this tournament after winning the first three editions through Smart Gilas (2008) and the Misamis Oriental Meteors (2009 and 2010).

the first tournament of gilas in which they won the tournament. Franz Pumaren downplayed the achievement of gilas saying that the tournament is just the level of philippine's collegiate teams.
