USA, Canada and Serbia are the main favorites. I won't be surprised if the Maple Leafs take the gold medal. This canadian generation is full of high class players. Potentially the best ever. Every position is covered by several NCAA high major recruits. The only question mark if Stefan Jankovic because he still have to choose between Serbia and Canada.

Sim Bhullar, Khem Birch, Kyle Witljer, Anthony Bennett, Kevin Thomas, Stefan Jankovic, Junior Lomomba, Dyshawn Pierre, Stefan Cvrkalj, Negus Webster-Chan, Mick Kabongo, Kevin Pangos.

Sorry, this thread is about the Women's U19 Tournament

China has a very good chance to medal, lots of very good female players in this generation.

Carlo, you should change the name of your thread. Something like 2011 FIBA U19 Women World Championship won't confuse people like me.

As usual, USA, Australia and China will fight for gold.

People should follow slovenian star Nika Baric is one of the best female player produced in former Yugoslavia in the last twenty years. She will play the WNBA in the next year.

Another interesting prospect is Carley Mijovic an australian girl of serbian descent, she is 197 cm tall.

Italy won the European U18 last year with a 9-0 record so they have to be considered a medal contender, some of their players looked pretty good in that silly FIBA 33 thing as well.

Realistically it's hard to bet against the US.

As far it is known at present, I agree with serbianhoops on the medal round contenders and would add the 2010 U18 Eurochamp Italy. As stated by JGX, Italian 2010 U18 team played very well and fought off a tough challenge from strong Spanish and French teams. 3 of their players took part to the 3on3 YOG in Singapore that reached the 5th place having lost only once!

An outsider country could be Canada, which has some of its candidates playing as freshmen in the NCAA. From the 2010 U18 team there are Michelle & Katherine Plouffe, Wumi Agunbiade, Cassandra Brown and some others, from the 2010 Senior (!) team Natalie Achonwa playing her first year at Notre Dame. From the HS the star should be Nirra Fields who was the top scorer at the 2010 U17 Worlds.

Finally, another strong country could be Russia, which has a good mix of fine players from the 2010 U18 and U17, but at this stage it’s too early to say more.

At any rate I’m sure the 2011 U19 Worlds will show a strong competition and -my personal opinion- Group A is the toughest, with China Italy and Canada as the favorites for the eights.

17 players have been selected to the U19 Australian womens’s team after a first camp in January and will continue training to make the final 12.

Here the 17 chosen players (out of 24 participants to the tryouts):

    http://www.basketball.net.au/index.php?id=789

The Gems squad consists of 9 members of the 2010 U17 team (Tippett, Roberts, Blicavs, Mijovic, Bunton, Clydesdale, Lavey, Payne and Thompson), 6 from the 2010 U18-19 (Herrington, Cole, Allen, Garrick, Haughton and Karaitiana) and 2 from the 3on3 YOG silver medalist team (Fadljevic and Donnelly). Not chosen were Olivia Bontempelli (hero of the Singapore 3on3 semifinal with the USA) as well as Nicole Seekamp and Asleigh Stonehouse, among the best of the U18 team.

The 12 finalists to the Gems team (U19 Australia women) have been selected after the last week tryout.

Out of the 12 finalists, 7 come from the 2010 U17 World team and 5 from the 2010 U18 squad.

    Default Chinese U19 team

Chinese U19 girls are in L.A. area and lost to Community Colleges. Quite disappointing, considering they could win bronze in FIBA they should beat all these American school teams handily. Shows you how much talent there is in the US.

Here's a clip against high schoolers. It's obvious the undersized Americans are far more physical. According to this this is a top 3 high school team nationally though.

Although the two best players from the Chinese squad are absent, Gao Song (MVP of Asian U18; with NT) and Li Meng (MVP of World U17; recovering from torn ACL).

Long Beach Poly is a perrenial state and national powerhouse on the women's side. I've seen them play in person a couple of times in the past for state championship games and they've always been super impressive.

Well, from this video that was a highly contested great game and China won by 4.
Long Beach Poly has been one of the best national HS during the last season and two of its seniors, Sheila Boykin and Ariya Crook-Williams are top level players.
Wish Li Meng to recover soon.

According to this article China is also going to play Mater Dei, who were the #1 HS team in the country this year, with Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (#1 recruit in class of 2011 according to ESPN) and two other players in the top 30.

For the cerebral Boykin, it was an adjustment giving up some of her normal advantages. “I usually try to listen to what other teams are saying, to figure out what they’re doing,” she said. “But I tried to learn Chinese all week, and I never figured out ‘pick and roll,’”

Well--apparently it will be Mater Dei players "who are available" (I suspect many of them have club commitments), plus some players from other local schools:

    * Chinese National Team Game

    Thursday April 14, 6pm @MDHS
Let’s pack the gym, spread the word to your family and friends about this rare opportunity that our girls have to compete against international competition. The cost will be $5 per adult and $2 per child, MD students with ID are free. The MD girls who are available will be teaming with the North OC All Star Team in this game.

Default Thanks for all the info everyone

Chinese U19 results in the US so far:

    vs. Vanguard University W 68-50
vs. Long Beach Poly HS W 77-73
vs. California Storm (Team Taurasi) W 82-54
vs. Got Game Club L 68-73
vs. Mount San Antonio College L 42-55

I can't believe there is a $2 charge for a girl's high school game. Even women's college games are mostly free!

    Shangluo Tournament (China):
    http://www.basketball.net.au/index.p...ash=a4f8dcef01

Really a big win of the Australian U19 Gems vs China U19, despite the fatigue related to the long trip.

In the other game a USA "All Star" selection beat a Czech team 76-68.
    http://www.netscoutsbasketball.com/b...ns-first-game/

This USA team should to be a selection of former college and pro (?) players (see the third news in the next link):
