IMO, a lot of guys can go the undrafted way in entering the PBA, especially the big men.

Too bad Air 21 doesn't have 1st round picks anymore. Well, they are going to trade it anyway now that Lito Alvarez runs things again so there's actually nothing wrong with that. They'll still suck next season. Poor Coach Franz Pumaren.
after the likes of James Sena who gotten drafted in the 1st Round but did not get signed-up, there are times its better to be undrafted as you get to choose the team to go to and try your luck.

Why is chiu the 2nd best big in the draft??? He couldn't do anything in the dleague...taha obviously played better than him. Even mark andaya and sam eman had better credentials than him.

even though a lot of forumers here are not that convinced about Chris Tiu capabilities to be a top notch PBA player compared to the other players who applied for this year's PBA Draft, it looks a lot of people in the PBA have a different view:

Petron, Alaska interested in Chris Tiu
    Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Friday, August 3, 2012 · 11:11 pm

After finally declaring for the PBA, Chris Tiu is suddenly on the radar of two teams picking atop the draft.

San Miguel Corporation executive Noli Eala said picking Tiu, one of the most popular players in the country, is a possibility. The Petron Blaze Boosters, an SMC team, own two of the top three picks in the draft.

“We’ve got to move some pieces, but not a bad idea,” Eala wrote in a text message to InterAKTV. Earlier, Eala said the team was using the first overall pick on June Mar Fajardo, a 6-foot-10 center who spent the last season with San Miguel, another SMC squad, in the ABL.

But Alaska, the team that picks second overall, is also interested in the former SMART-Gilas Pilipinas team captain.

“Definitely, he will be an asset,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo. “Talent-wise, we’re thinking of picking either Calvin Abueva or Cliff Hodge, but in terms of need, we might consider picking up Chris Tiu.”

There are questions about how Tiu, a 27-year-old combo guard, could adjust to the PBA game. But according to basketball experts, his popularity could offset a team’s concerns about his talent.

“Aside from the fact that Chris is a very fierce competitor, he has the skills to be a very exciting player,” said former Powerade coach Bo Perasol. “Likewise, he has the mass appeal to add flavor to the PBA.”

The Tigers had two first round picks in last year’s draft, and Perasol said that if Tiu had turned pro, the team would have used one of those picks on the ex-Ateneo stalwart.

Powerade ended up picking Tiu’s former SMART-Gilas teammates, JVee Casio at No. 1 and Marcio Lassiter at No. 4. The Tigers also hired Tiu’s younger brother Charles as an assistant coach.

Meralco, which picks fourth overall, is still mulling its plans for the upcoming draft, But team executive Mon Segismundo, who represents Meralco on the PBA Board of Governors, said Tiu is a very tempting option.

“We haven’t completed our process of selection yet because we still don’t have the full list of applicants in the draft,” said Segismundo. “But Chris is certainly one that can add value to any team.”

The draft is slated August 19, 4 p.m. at Robinsons Midtown Manila.

PBA commissioner Salud lauds Tiu’s leadership, smarts
    InterAKTV · Friday, August 3, 2012 · 2:01 pm

With Chris Tiu, one of the most popular basketball players in the country, announcing his intention to finally turn pro, even PBA commissioner Chito Salud is taking notice.

In a short statement on Friday, Salud expressed his admiration for the former SMART-Gilas Pilipinas team captain, and said he is “interested” to see Tiu in the PBA.

“We all know Chris (Tiu) compared to others is not one that jumps the highest, runs the fastest, shoots the best,” Salud said.

“And yet he comes out again and again as the leader of his team, be it in his collegiate days and then during his stint in the national team.

“That is what he brings to the table: leadership, smarts, maximizing one’s God-given talent, standing over and above the rest not thru sheer skills but because of his desire to shine and be a difference maker.

“But he is now in the big league, so I am interested to see how he will fare against the nation’s best basketball professionals.”

Tiu announced his decision to turn pro on Friday, ending months of speculation about his basketball future. “I’m excited. I hope I will be given the opportunity to play to whichever team needs me,” he said.

Toroman: ‘Tough, intelligent’ Chris Tiu will succeed in PBA
    Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Friday, August 3, 2012 · 1:32 pm

No coach knows that value of Chris Tiu better than Rajko Toroman, the former coach of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national squad.

And the Serbian coach, who currently serves as consultant for Petron, thinks that the former SMART-Gilas captain will thrive in the pro league.

“He was a very effective player for me when we were playing in the PBA,” Toroman told InterAKTV in a telephone interview. “He was second in rebounding and assists and was third in terms of scoring.”

Tiu announced his decision to turn pro on Friday, ending months of speculation about his basketball future. Still, questions remain about whether he’ll shine in the big league.

His old coach, however, has no doubt. “I’m sure, he will succeed in the PBA,” Toroman said, adding that Tiu will be able to adjust to the physicality of the pro game.

“He’s a tough kid. He knows how to deal with this kind of stuff. He’s an intelligent player.”

Toroman added that Tiu’s entry will be a boon for the pro league. “He can bring the fans easily to the coliseum. Chris and the PBA can benefit mutually.”

The draft is slated August 19, 4 p.m. at Robinsons Midtown Manila.

As usual greedy smc will horde talents and pick Tiu along Fajardo, and again there team will fail because of to many stars and lack role players that is why they don't gel.

Sarangay pretty descent. He may not be an offensive threat but he sets solid picks and rebounds well. Sunguitan should stick to volleyball lol. There's also Galinato and JDG if youre really desperate hehe

Gian Chiu is a big question mark because we havent really seen him play. The last time we got a glimpse of his game was when he was a junior in Ateneo. But its different now because he looks like he got buffed up, and got rid of those baby fats that he had when he was with Ateneo. But still we have to see how he has progress now as a player..

But the truth is the best big man is neither Taha or Chiu.. Its not even Fajardo, I think the best bigman for this draft is Hodge.. I was debating with some idiot in PEX, when I said that it would be smarter for Petron to draft Hodge, a player who could provide instant impact for the team and fix their immediate need in the front court, and then get Yousef Taha, a player which they could develop to be their future starting center...

In this case, Petron could get a center and a legitimate PF instead of a center (Fajardo), and another wing player (Abueva/Ellis)...Aparently he hasn't really seen Taha played so he was clueless...But I have seen the potential on Yousef Taha last Fil-Oil tournament and the guy was getting 14-15 rebunds a game so there is a big upside in drafting him..

In any case, my argument I had was before Chris Tiu joined the draft so I guess Fajardo/Tiu is not that bad especially if Rajko would be Petron's next coach...

Actually, Gian Chiu played in the PBA D-League for a few games with Cagayan Rising Suns if I remember it right. He wasn't dominant there at all.

Nope, they are stars. Fajardo is a scorer and rebounder while Tiu is a pure PG

They won't start out as stars..if you've watched junmar in the abl, he wasn't their star there...he was mainly a defender/rebounder which means he just played a role while tiu understands his role too as evidenced in his gilas stint..a defender/leader and both don't demand the ball.

Because they have imports in ABL and the focal point of offense are the imports. Chris Tiu was a Jkidd type of a player. He does not need to score to dominate, who is a good defender and playmaker ala Calma.

i have feeling that Petron will trade whoever they pick at 3rd for BEE for returning Danny Seigle. that rookie will spent a year with them and when Seigle retires that rookie will return to PBB via trade in exchange possibly draft pick or other player(s)

dumb coach..limited minutes given to chiu. anyways, it may be a ploy. Chiu will be a steal in 2nd round.

I hope Chiu lands in Rain or Shine or BMEG so he can get tougher and more skilled. He could be a Yancy D.O. or an Eman.
