The purpose of the rookie draft is to bring balance to the league. So that teams that ranked low in the previous season will be able to keep pace with the stronger teams by bringing in new players. Unfortunately, the purpose of the draft is defeated when teams like Shopinas and Barako eventually trade away their rookies to the highest bidders even before the season ends in exchange for fringe players and a lot of cash. So to cut the long story short, strong teams become stronger while the weaker teams remain weak.

The future for Barako, for instance, looks bright when it drafted promising rookies Allein Maliksi and Dylan Ababou. But just like many expected, those two players were shipped out just after one conference. And this trend will likely continue in future seasons.
afaik, Mikee Romero of Harbour Centre isn't keen on having a PBA Franchise anymore after the fallout of his deal with MVP. He already has his ABL Team. the Patriots.

Default Aug 19 Deadline for2012 PBA Rookies

DEADLINES SET FOR 2012 PBA ROOKIE DRAFT ON AUG. 19
    Published on June 11, 2012
For PBA rookie hopefuls, the big day is August 19 as the league holds the 2012 PBA Rookie Draft at
    Robinson’s Midtown Manila.

But first, they’ll have to note some important dates on their calendar.

The Commissioner’s Office has set July 6 as the deadline for Fil-foreign hopefuls to file their
applications and submit all the documentary requirements. Homegrown talents have until August 3 to
    turn in their applications.

July 10 is the last day of the issuance of preliminary list of prospective Fil-foreign draftees to
the teams, which will also have the period of July 11 to Aug. 2 to contest the eligibility of any
    applicant.

Rookie applicants go through biometrics on Aug. 15, a day before the final list of candidates for
    the draft is released.
Interesting to see PBA.COM use Fajardo's pick on this one. Sure thing he'll apply?

no doubt fajardo would...can't see him playing (wasting) 2 years in the abl. i have to say though that if everyone applies, this batch of rookies would be even better - prospectively - than the batch last year. ellis, hodge, mallari, jensen, nabong, mandani, manuel, fajardo, banchero, abueva are gonna comprise the first round...heck i'd have no problem picking tenth right there.

how can fajardo apply for the draft when he hasn't played a single d league game in his life? as per existing rules, a prospective pba player must play in the d-league first.

furthermore, junmar obviously can't take the jv casio, lassiter, lutz, baracael route of foregoing the d-league and joing the pba right away because he hasn't played for the national team. the abl is not a national team stint because it is a commercial league.

good luck with that eala. with the way you neatly handled smc's participation in the national team pool, i can see the mvp bloc exhausting all means to block his entry.

what exactly is the rule in PBA draft?

Are local players not allowed to enter the draft right away?
How come Julius Pasculado was able to enter and junmar Fajardo cant?
If stanley Pringle porves he was born here, he may enter the draft too like pasculado did.

Anyway if a player already played pro in another country does that still wouldnt allow them to enter the pba?
Im talking about junmar fajardo, stanley pringle(if dleague rule wont allow them) and chris banchero.

so if Aaron Craft, a fil-am NBA draft prospect, was drafted in the NBA and then later on released from the NBA and decided to play in the Philippines, he wouldnt be allowed by the PBA and will be instructed to play in the d-League first?
A filipino, named stanley pringle, who played as an import in europe and has invitations from nba/nba dleague would have to suit up first in the PBA dleague?

i dunno but i think the abl-ers can join the draft...abl is technically a semi-pro (or maybe even a pro) league as it is...the rule only applies to amateurs. besides, smc would've already thought about that..if they were sure junmar would need to play in the dleague first then they would have sent him there instead.

I hope none of these guys are drafted. I want them to be in the cadet pool. Like Jolas (and Gerardo Roxas) said, bayan muna bago sarili. country before self. The Gilas I guys have set the bar.

    What bar was that?
Last time i looked they looked to get drafted because they needed long-term contracts-- something SBP couldn't give. And way before that choosing the country's colors came with a price-- they were salaried players for an NT, paid for by the SBP/MVP.

Why are we still discussing this again? Or are you still intentionally acting blind to the entire situation?

Fajardo dili gihapon magpa-draft sa PBA
(Trans: Fajardo not applying for PBA Draft)

    Ni Erwin S. Lirazan

    Wednesday, June 13, 2012

(Trans: Estenzo cleared that San Miguel will release Fajardo if the SMB PBA Franchise will have the rights to the No.1 overall pick.)

“Kon makuha sa San Mi*guel ang right sa no.1 pick, magpa-draft na si Fajardo sa PBA,” matod ni Estenzo.
(Trans: "If San Miguel will get the rights to pick no. 1, then Fajardo will join the PBA Draft," Estenzo said.)

(Trans: Financially, Fajardo is receiving a salary same to that of the PBA.)
