He did not retire. He was retired by coaches for simulating finger injury to avoid NT.

What coaches? Sireika? His journey with NT finished in 2006. After that f.e. Kaukenas was called back to NT, who also had issues with Sireika.

Btw, Salenga stated that NT is past for him in some 2007/2008. Anyways at that time he had almost none chances to make it

But Kaukenas never simulated any injuries. Thats a key difference. It always looked like the problem was the coach while with Shalenga it seemed more like he did not want to play for NT. This is what other coaches followed - he once lied and simulated about an injury so none of NT coaches even considered inviting him even to the training camp. Shalenga did not retire himself , he was retired by the coaches for simulating the injury thats why he is never into consideration. Seems that liars are not well respected while those who say straightforwardly about the problems they see in NT and refuse to play because of that have more respect, like Kaukenas.

    Question

Do you think any of the teams might have been improved with the presence of Dainius Šalenga then?

So you don't like liars and creating facts by yourself at the same time?

First of all, Salenga indeed was injured, but it wasn't serious as it looked from the 1st sight. Akasvayu asked him to come earlier, he left the NT and went there. Sure from fans point of view it's a bad thing. The same sh*t happened to Macas the same year, he got small injury, could have played in Eurobasket, but Hornets asked him to not to and he left NT... 1 week before tournament or so... You should call him liar, traitor, simulator or so, right? I don't. I try to imagine what I'd do if I'd be in their shoes. They made a choice - career opportunity over NT. It's their right to do that. Everybody knew that 2005 EC wasn't preolympic or so, in other words not so important. Saras also chose to rest that summer.
Secondly, I will repeat myself once again - only Sireika didn't call him up in 2006 cause of this accident. It was one and only fact regarding this issue. All other years he wasn't called up just because he wasn't needed at all. None even questioned do Salenga needs to be in camps or why he isn't there. FFS we had Siskauskas, Kleiza, who played as SF till 2010, also Maciulis, Jasaitis. Why the hell anyone should call Salenga, who was already over 30yo? Also in his comeback year he was only a bench warmer in Zalgiris!!! Played only couple of minutes or so. Maybe he could have had a chance in 2009, but earlier he decided to quit from NT, I don't know why, maybe cause of age, maybe he wanted to concentrate on club career, like lot of players does at such age, but I clearly remember that he said that NT is past for him and he wouldn't consider invitation.

That's the point. He wasn't needed at all and it was the only reason why he wasn't called up since 2007 when Sireika left

Šalenga had that misterious "injury" in 2005 and he could be very important for that Eurobasket NT where Šiška by himself hold all backourt. He would had been one of the leaders and helped a lot. The same with 2006 NT. Since 2007 there was no need of Šalenga.

    The flick from the future...

Salenga is a pretty streaky player himself - he can be on fire from the three-point line one day, and he'll miss most of his shots the next day. That and his "injury" is what kept coaches from inviting him. But if he were a bit more consistent player, he'd be the Kevin Durant of LKL, 'cause he's fast, he can dunk, he can shoot threes and twos, has some bball IQ, and, most importantly, he doesn't give up.

well,Salenga is like matured cheddar -he gets better with time.He is a decent player, although never to be in our top 12 or even 50 .He plays good game ,him being 35 year old or so.He defends and shoots better than most of them in LKL.

I'd say that he's certainly still a top fifty player. In fact, he might still be able to make Lithuania's B team.
