Powerhouse B-Meg roster awaits Cone

WITH former Alaska coach Tim Cone waiting in the wings, B-Meg has started to put together the final pieces for a probable championship run in the Philippine Cup that kicks off the 37th season of the PBA on Oct. 2.
B-Meg was to present before Commissioner Chito Salud yesterday papers for a three-team trade with Barako Bull and Shopinas.com that would net the Llamados a top point guard in Andy Mark Barroca.
According to a team source, the Llamados initiated the trade to fill up a void in their backcourt due to the torn ACL injury suffered by Jonas Villanueva in the last Governors Cup.
Barroca, chief backup of JV Casio in the Smart-Gilas national team, was drafted at No. 5 overall by Shopinas.
In exchange, the Barako Bull got Don Carlos Allado and B-Meg’s future second round pick, while the Clickers obtained the Energy’s Elmer Espiritu and the Llamados’ second round pick, Brian Ilad.
If Salud approves the trade, Barroca will alternate at the point with Roger Yap and Josh Urbiztondo and can complement a team that boasts two-time MVP James Yap, PJ Simon and Marc Pingris.
Making the Llamados more power-laden is the return of Rico Maierhofer, who has fully recovered from the torn ACL injury he suffered early last season. Kerby Raymundo is also set to make his own comeback from a third-degree sprain on Sept. 22 and further strengthen a frontline that also has Joe Devance and Rafi Reavis.
For the Philippine Cup, B-Meg will be handled by Richard del Rosario, who has been named interim coach, while Cone, who parted ways with Alaska last week, will act as consultant, at least in the season-opening Philippine Cup.
Cone, who won 13 titles in 22 years with the Uytengsu franchise, including the Grand Slam in 1996, is sure to wind up with the San Miguel Corp. coaching group and, eventually, B-Meg, according to the team insider.
"Hindi puwedeng sa Petron (Blaze) dahil kapapanalo lang, samantalang dalawang mabibigat na coaches (Siot Tanquingcen and Jong Uichico) na ang nandoon sa Ginebra," the insider said. "Kaya sa B-Meg siya most likely mapupunta."
Meanwhile, Del Rosario and Rene Pardo, B-Meg’s representative to the PBA board, were set to meet yesterday, with the former reportedly out to clarify Cone’s role with the team.
"Coach Richard has a contract with (the NCAA’s) St. Benilde (Blazers) that expires in mid-October and he is also the coach of PC Gilmore in the PBA D-League. He will also be acting as a TV announcer and segment producer of TV5," related the insider.
"So he wants the air cleared, whether he will be staying long-term as head coach of B-Meg. If not, he can chart his own future course," the source said

unlike the centennial cup last time as it was really planned all along that it is not the part of their calendar while this conference is revival of sort of the traditional 3 conf format where it consists of an All Filipino, reinforced and a conference where do we invite top teams from other countries
