wow. SMC is dead serious to acquire gilas 1 mainstays from their original teams. petron now has lutz, lassiter and possibly casio (and toroman, too!). what a way to raid gilas 1 former players and to refuse to lend gilas 2 with SMC players (santos, cabagnot, pingris, yap, fajardo, etc.), at the same time. grabeng mamersonal si noli.

More than the raiding, what bothers me more really is the firesale that Powerade is doing today. There's no apt way of looking at it, and DT explicitly cited this. You don't peddle your 5 best players (Casio, Lassiter, David, Kramer, Anthony) in the trading block (if rumors were true) if your franchise is bent to stick it out for the next few seasons. Especially if this nucleus catapulted you to a runnerup finish in no less than the All Filipino Conference.

How can one actually explain this? There are three objectives in what Powerade is doing today:

    1. Trade their players for good commodities as well that will still make the team competitive and marketable when they sell the franchise. Part of the trade will include cash considerations.

    2. Bring down their operational costs. If they can give up on Gary David, who's earning P420k a month for players whose salaries are half of what he's receiving, or for future draft picks, then they'll be spending so much less in their remaining one conference in the league. If you're wondering how Lassiter (salary P150k) and Cruz (salary around P100k) were given up for Al-Husseini (salary P225k), Tugade (salary around P150k) and Guevarra (salary around P150k) and can't find a relationship to the objective of bringing down operational costs, the bigger question here is: why would Powerade pay for players earning twice as much more than what they're paying now? And if the Cortez-Casio-Cabagnot deal is consummated, why would they pay Cortez P300k or more when they're only paying Casio P150k? Or an Anthony for Devance trade when Anthony's earning around P200k a month while Devance is paid P350k? Ever thought about the likelihood of SMC paying for the excess amount of salaries so that Powerade's expenses will remain the same?

    3. So now, Powerade has done two things - earn cash on the side with the trades and bring down their costs. Once the season ends, they will now sell the franchise. Will the value considerably go down? Not exactly - especially if you have guys like Al-Husseini, Guevarra, Tugade, Vanlandingham, possibly Cortez, etc. in your team. It's not a championship team unlike before but it's a good team to build on for a new franchise owner. Much better than what Air 21 has today. And much better than what Rain Or Shine (then Welcoat) had to contend with when they joined the PBA in 2005. They won't be able to sell the franchise at around P120M, but they probably can still offer this, especially if they have future draft picks available, at the vicinity of P90M.

woah, SMC's tired with JDV?! Tim quit Alaska for Devance! Plus, they have Ping as their energy guy already

Maybe just a rumor, CH, as there have been an abundance of such lately. But if these rumors were true, it must be because JDV seems to be like a square peg on a round hole for B-Meg. Also, say whatever you want about Tim's triangle but it's not as evident at B-Meg as it was with Alaska. A lot of the plays evolving with B-Meg now is brought about by several pick and rolls, drive and draw, and individual plays of their stars. When you have a PJ Simon and a James Yap on your team, as a coach, you really have no choice but to give them enough latitude to do their thing. And Cone realizes this.

It's the same with the Alaska of 1996 and 1998. But since all the players that he had practically started learning the PBA game with the triangle (with the exception of Jolas, the one guy who despised the triangle), then Cone's job was made easier. It was easy for him to make Hawkins, Juinio, Abarrientos and Cariaso embrace the triangle offense since they were all pretty much starting with it. And by the time Duremdes joined the team in 1998, Tim already proved the triangle's worthiness with a grandslam in 1996.

Giving up on JDV isn't that difficult really, especially if you have a young, hyper-energetic player in Anthony to take over his slot. It may be a replication of Ping's role, so perhaps, Anthony may actually find himself suiting up for another SMC team (probably BGK).

I may sound bias being a BGK fan but both of them fit an aging, impotent, and small frontline. Anthony replacing Rudy Hatfield if he REALLY decides to hang 'em up and JDV as the versatile frontliner. But I really don't see Devance's potential outside Cone's system. Or to be more precise, Devance's stats are highlighted and heightened up because he fits well with a dominant big and a smart PG in Thoss and Tenorio --- which isn't the case with B-Meg.

Nothing. The only thing the Commissioner can do is to ensure that the trades aren't lopsided and that the salary cap is enforced properly. They can also seek clarification from Powerade management but then, expect them to tell Salud that they won't be disbanding...yet!

Which simply means that Powerade is a willing "pawn" to this since they stand to gain the most out of their efforts.

of course he's shot it down 'cause it's 1) a rumor, and; 2) things are always up for approval.

question is, does the PBA have a policy on trade-seeking announcements as per the NBA?

Evident fire sale that is still legal. What can you really do as a commissioner if the rules allow it?

    so they finally approved it:

1.) BARAKO BULL acquired the rights to Doug Kramer

2.) POWERADE TIGERS acquired the rights to Jondan Salvador as well as Barako Bull's 2012 1st round draft pick (acquired from Talk N' Text)
Well, to me, Kramer works because of a great system. There ain't no other franchise that could provide him a great PG (that's accounting the fact that he's been to that franchise before)

Unusual trade for Barako. You don't give up on first rounders at this time, unless you get a solid veteran player who can turn your team's fortunes around.

Similarly, I think Barako was "tricked" to consummate this trade. When rumors came about that Meralco was also interested in acquiring Kramer, Barako probably felt they needed to sweeten the deal to ensure that this trade can be consummated. A first round pick would have been the fair equivalent for Kramer, adding Jondan Salvador made it advantageous for the Tigers.

So the scenario now is that they may have lost Kramer but got Salvador in return. When Powerade sells its franchise at the end of the season, they would have two first round picks for 2012 to make sure that the franchise remains saleable.

barako's first rounder would have been traded away again anyway so i don't think it's such a bad thing that they gave it to powerade..plus it will surely be a bottom pick coz it is owned by tnt.

I say Powerade would trade that first round pick for scrubs and more cash. Barako can now ship Kramer to another SMC team. Meralco on the otherhand must outbid BUT it seems like SMC has the inside track in all these movements.

For BGK, I have read that E-Vill is asking for a trade. Can BGK just trade him to Powerade for that first rounder? Then they just pay the remaining of Enrico's salary. In this way, Powerade can save nad maybe earn some cash considerations from SMC.

With the impending disbandment of Alaska in the near future...I guess SMC will move heaven and earth to acquire their 2 biggest stars(Tenorio and Thoss), and the eventual beneficiary will be Bmeg, while JDV stays with them!

    LA
    James
    JDV
    Pingris
    Thoss
