I just have a few questions for MANCOM:

1.) The reason why the brawl started in the first place was the alleged RACIAL SLUR that was thrown against Ola right? Ola has been here for a couple of years and can now understand a few Filipino words, phrases even. At facebook (Since I am Ola's Facebook friend), sometimes I even see him reply to his friend's posts in Tagalog like "baliw" "masaya ka na?" "Kamusta" "Salamat" and so on... Do you guys honestly think he wouldn't notice when someone throws a word like Unggoy" at him? When you go to a foreign country what type of words do you usually learn? The bad words right? If you have a foreign friend, say an African, wouldn't you teach him the words that locals might use against him? Say like, UNGGOY, TSONGGO, and all that crap? My point being is: Do you HONESTLY think no one from the DEN taught Ola these words? Was ola imagining these words? Was he just trying to make a scene? Does he want to put himself in an embarassing position such as this? I doubt it?

2.) Thus my second question: What happened to the racial slur case? Why wasn't it investigated? Why wasn't it EVEN mentioned? it just evaporated.

3.) Was this just an accidental PLOY to dethrone the KINGS? An opportunity too hard to pass?

4.) Why weren't the volleyball players suspended?

    ...Enlighten me please.

With all the current problems, San Beda should just leave the NCAA and join the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) and help the league grow as it enters its 12th season in the coming academic year.

Lim to remain as SBC coach

FRANKIE Lim will remain as head coach of the San Beda Red Lions even if the National Collegiate Athletic Association pushes through with its decision to impose a two-year ban on him for his involvement in a fracas last Dec. 2.

San Beda College’s vice president for finance and team administrator Fr. Rafael Alaras said Thursday that Lim has given the school a great honor for steering the Red Lions to five titles in six finals appearances.

Fr. Alaras expressed the school’s sentiments during festivities held in celebration of San Beda’s successful bid to retain the overall championship in the NCAA.

“Frankie will still be there. He designed the basketball program, did the recruitment and the training. After all, it’s only in the NCAA where he is banned for two years,” said Alaras.

Alaras added that school officials will still discuss who among the team’s assistant coaches, Boni Garcia and JB Sison, and team manager Mike Advani, will handle the team as a coach during the coming 88 th season. Any of the three will handle the team in the NCAA.

The school will also formalize its plans to appeal the sanctions imposed on Lim, an assistant coach, two Fil-foreign recruits and 11 members of the team, who were involved in the incident. Peter Atencio

NCAA mancom confirms transer from ABS-CBN to AKTV 5

    Tuesday, 06 March 2012 20:26 Joel Orellana / Reporter

THE National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Management Committee (Mancom) on Tuesday agreed to sign a three-year contract with TV5 on March 15.

The final presentation of TV5 Chief Operating Officer and Vice President Bobby Barreiro and sports head Vito Lazatin on Tuesday appealed to the Mancom, urging officials of the oldest collegiate league in the country to bid goodbye to ABS-CBN after 10 years of partnership.

Incoming Mancom Vice Chairman Henry Atayde of College of St. Benilde said the NCAA agreed to move to a new direction and sees TV5 as the opportunity to lift the league to greater heights.
“We’re very happy with the presentation. I think this is part of the change that we’re looking in for the NCAA,” Atayde told the BusinessMirror after the Mancom meeting on Tuesday at Lyceum.

“We’re leaving Channel 2 on a high note. We thank them for 10 very good years with them and we’re leaving not because we’re better off with TV5 but this is part of the change,” he added.

Atayde refused to divulge the amount of the three-year pact but sources said it will be definitely higher than what the NCAA got from ABS-CBN in its last five-year deal.

The CSB official said the NCAA already advised ABS-CBN about its new deal with TV5.

Atayde said the men’s basketball tournament will finally have a weekend game—though the schedule has yet to be finalized by both camps—giving them a thrice a week schedule. With ABS-CBN, there were times that NCAA basketball games were only shown twice a week.

“The NCAA has the control of the schedule. They [TV5] can only suggest,” said Atayde.

Apart from the weekend games for men’s basketball, TV5 will also be providing a prime-time spot to women’s volleyball games and will be shown on AKTV twice a week.

And for the first time, the finals of juniors and men’s football, badminton, men’s volleyball and beach volleyball will be shown on the free TV on Channel 13 through AKTV, the sports channel of TV5.

The contract signing is on March 15, the same day University of Perpetual Help Sytem Dalta turns over the hosting chores to Letran.

Meanwhile, Atayde said the Mancom decided to defer any decision on the brawl between San Beda men’s basketball coach Frankie Lim and some of the Red Lions and San Sebastian College women’s volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb.

He said the policy board is still studying the case and waiting for the appeal of both camps.

“Nothing is final yet. We expect both schools to make an appeal then after reading their appeal, that’s the time we will made a decision,” said Atayde.

    NCAA mulls holding games
    in provinces in Season 88

    BY JEROME LAGUNZAD

LETRAN, which will host the 88th season of the NCAA starting in June, intends to make the league truly number one in the land.

Reverend father Vic Calvo bared this vision yesterday as Letran formally received the hosting rights from University of Perpetual Help in brief turnover rites at the St. Thomas Bldg. inside the Letran campus in Intramuros, Manila.

Sharing center stage with Rev. Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P., Letran’s rector and president, Calva sounded optimistic for the upcoming season, saying: "This season, we will continue to add pages to our already historic league. Letran will definitely tread new frontier and we are all set to give new glories for the NCAA."

The league has for its theme "Celebramos 88! Conquistar port u honor nuevas glories" (Celebrate 88! Conquering New Glories).

Letran’s top brass expects another banner year for the country’s oldest collegiate league, buoyed by a fresh three-year pact with AKTV.

"This season promises to be as exciting as ever," said Lana, the league’s new president. "We hope to continue enhancing further the camaraderie and harmony among the 10 participating teams. With a new television partner in AKTV, we’re hoping to promote the league to all sports enthusiasts."

Also gracing the rites were former NCAA president Anthony Tamayo of University of Perpetual Help, Arellano’s Paulino Cayco, Dr. Jose Campos of Emilio Aguinaldo College, Lyceum’s Atty. Roberto Laurel, Rev. Fr. Anthony Morillo of San Sebastian College, Jose Rizal U’s Dr. Vincent Fabella, Dr. Reynaldo Vea of Mapua and Rev. Fr. Aloysius Maranan of San Beda. Only Bro. Victor Franco of St. Benilde failed to show up.

As part of their lofty goal, the NCAA, according to Calvo, is mulling the possibility of staging elimination matches in various provinces ties such as Ormoc in Leyte, Lucena, Bacolod City and Legazpi City, Albay to further "sell the league" to avid Pinoy fans.

"I think the league is already established here in Manila so we’re discussing if we can hold some provincial games. Malay niyo baka mas kumita pa tayo duon," Calvo said with a grin.

With the help of AKTV, Lana said the NCAA is also considering the viability of televising not only the basketball tournament but other events like women’s volleyball, which is already being done by the UAAP.

"Gusto rin namin na hindi lang panay basketball ang mapapanood kundi poati na rin yung ibang crucial games sa ibang mga sports," stressed Lana.

"This season, we will be televised on Mondays, Thursday and Saturday."

    NCAA: No foreign cagers
(The Philippine Star) Updated March 17, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - Tapping foreign players as reinforcements in the NCAA may soon be a thing of the past.

Letran College, host of the upcoming Season 88 of the NCAA, is planning to limit players seeing action in the league to pure-blooded Filipinos or those with Filipino lineage to level the playing field.

“Everyone knows we raised this issue before,” said Letran rector and NCAA president Fr. Tamerlane Lana, OP, during the official turnover ceremonies at Letran’s St. Thomas Building in Intramuros, Manila the other day.

“We’re discussing the matter again but the league has no official stand regarding the issue for now. Hopefully, when we meet again a month from now, we will be able to talk things out and make an official stand on it,” he added.

School officials have actually broached the idea of banning foreign players last season but nothing came out of it.

San Beda has won championships with help from foreign players like Nigerian Sam Ekwe and American Sudan Daniel.

Incidentally, another Nigerian, Ola Adeogun was supposed to suit up this season after completing residency but was banned for a season as a spectator for entering an official game in a brawl at San Beda gym last December.

Adeogun’s ban though is expected to be reduced to a two-game suspension if he passes the eligibility requirement for players in the coming season.

As this developed, Management Committee chair Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of Letran said they will continue to pursue plans of holding out-of-town games in Lucena, Quezon, Legazpi, Albay and Bacolod City this year to widen their fan base.

“We are seriously pursuing that plan because we want to reach out to our alumni and supporters in the provinces,” said Calvo.

The basketball tournament unwraps June 23 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum with the other games tentatively scheduled to be played on The Arena in San Juan City and perhaps the SM Mall of Asia Arena, which is expected to be completed in May.

Saguisag pleads case of San Beda’s 2 Fil-foreign players
    by Peter Atencio
    Manila Standard

HUMAN rights lawyer Rene Saguisag yesterday urged officials of the National Collegiate Athletic Association to reconsider its decision of banning San Beda College’s two Fil-foreign players for their involvement in a brawl, which disrupted a volleyball game last Dec. 2.

Saguisag was reacting to the NCAA management committee’s findings that the word “unggoy” was just a part of San Sebastian College’s chants and that it wasn’t directed on Nigerian cager Olaide Adeogun, who heard it and told his coach and teammates about it, triggering the brawl with SSC coach Roger Gorayeb and his players.

“Those concerned should not be dismissive of the word ‘unggoy,’ which was hurled at Adeogun.” wrote Saguisag, in an emailed response to an article that came out in the Manila Standard Wednesday.

“I hope Mancom will reconsider and moderate and equalize sanctions. Titles should be won in the hard court, not in a board or courtroom. To fight for the basic human right of dignity should be encouraged everywhere, particularly in Catholic schools,” said Saguisag, an alumnus of SBC.

He believes that “injury has been added to insult” when Adeogun was slapped a two-year ban, together with Fil-American Julius Armon. The two were also prevented from entering any NCAA venue for two years following the incident.

“Suppose the issue reaches the United Nations as a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? We will lose the goodwill of our African brothers and sisters and much of the civilized world,” added Saguisag.

Saguisag stated that he had been an NCAA fan all his life, and he has not heard any team officially using “unggoy” as part of any team’s chant.

He even questioned the NCAA policy board and the management committee for not imposing any sanctions on the SSC volleyball players, who were also involved in the incident.

Magsanoc May Lead Red Lions' NCAA Campaign?
Posted by San Beda Sports on 3/28/2012 05:58:00 AM

Ronnie Magsanoc may take over as the new head coach of the San Beda Red Lions after Frankie Lim bade the team goodbye last Tuesday - which is not yet official (see related post).

The bid to have Magsanoc take the place of Lim in the coming season of the 88th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament got a big boost from basketball patron Manny V. Pangilinan.

Talk ‘N Text chief Ricky Vargas informed Lim of Pangilinan’s sentiments following talks held last Monday and told him of his desire to have Magsanoc take over the coaching chores.

“Yes, that’s true (on having said farewell to the team). But I will give my thoughts after I have talked to Mr. Pangilinan tomorrow,” said Lim following a huddle with the Red Lions during a practice yesterday morning.

Lim added that he will discuss his plans and sentiments with Pangilinan. Lim’s job was supposed to be delegated to the team’s assistant coaches, Boni Garcia and JB Sison, while he serves out a two-year suspension.

Garcia and Sison are the school’s primary choices to handle the Red Lions in Lim’s absence.

On the other hand, Ateneo junior coach Jamike Jarin is said to be Pangilinan’s second choice.

But sources said officials of the school, headed by Fr. Rector Aloysius Maranan, are still discussing Lim’s fate, along with assistant coach Ed Cordero.

I know a kid who is really playing good.I was watching his game for over two years and every month he is improving so fast. He's like a veteran. He is very smart. He has a lot of potential and if he can't make it to manila such as ncaa seniors league or uaap seniors league, his ability and potential is really much . He has a wide basketball i.q. he knows how to set-up his team-mates, can shoot perimeter and outside shots, plays good pressure defense and plays a lot of heart. He's also good in his academics. Everytime I saw him playing, I imagine him playing in Manila Respected games but it will be only possible if you can help this kid guys. We can only seldom see players that can balance his physical and academic activities. May I ask if there is still any on-going try-outs in NCAA and UAAP schools?Even just in team B. He can still be develop because he's still 16 years old and very soft-spoken to his coach. He follows all the instructions. His about 6'0" tall and loves to play all-around game. If you can help him and me. Please Reply. I will be the one to send him to manila.I'll just talk to his parents. I think there's no wrong if he will try for his luck.Any information that will be given will be very much pleasing to his side.

I think La Salle is in the midst of a tryout. One could approach Sauler or coach Abenilla or any of the coaching staff.
