Mapua Beats Lyceum By 100 Points
    July 12, 2012, 6:38pm

    Schedule:

Saturday, July 14, 2012 - ARENA, San Juan
12:00 PM LPU vs AU (JRS)
2:00 PM SSCR vs JRU (JRS)
4:00 PM LPU vs AU (SRS)
6:00 PM SSCR vs JRU (SRS)

Mapua made a punching bag of Lyceum yesterday, beating their Intramuros neighbor by 100 points as the Red Robins romped to a 132-32 win in their NCAA junior basketball game at The Arena in San Juan City.

Lyceum could not live up to its team monicker Junior Pirates. They hardly projected the image of swashbuckling individuals, more like comics whose eye patches covered both eyes.

Such was the one-sided nature of the encounter that the Robins allowed their rivals to score just five points in the first quarter and then seven in the next quarter.

The Pirates appeared never to flinch, though. They played gamely on. After all, this was not the first time they were embarrassed.

Against San Beda last July 2, the Red Cubs flattened them by the score of 171-14.

They also lost to La Salle-St. Benilde, 122-41, Perpetual Help, 135-57 and Emilio Aguinaldo College, 119-54.

To their credit, nine of the Junior Pirates scored, evenly distributing the load, but none scored more than seven points.

With the win, the Red Robins improved to 3-1 – thanks to a near triple-double performance of John Diego.

The hard-working Diego finished with 21 points, 21 rebounds and seven blocks.

On the other hand, 11 players from Mapua turned in double digits in which the score after three quarters was: Mapua 104, Lyceum 20.

Thankfully, the Mapua defense cooled and allowed Lyceum players to leave the game somehow joyfully. They had their largest output in a quarter, 12, in the last 10 minutes.

In the other game, Letran hammered down Emilio Aguinaldo College, 82-63, for its second win in three games. The Brigadiers dropped to a 1-4 slate.

True about the scheduling but that happens in sports. Football is a great example.

But if you think about it, UPHSD is just greatly coached by Coach Aric del Rosario. If you think about it, their line-up is no different to LPU, EAC, CSB and AU. Those African imports they got are also gems. Effective.

sir nards, are they scouting this kids(referring to olsen), it seems that we have some tough highschoolers who can mix it up despite their height of 6'3 6'4.

Thursday, June 28, 2012 12:00 PM vs UPHSD Altalettes 57-135

    Monday, July 2, 2012 2:00 PM vs San Beda-Taytay Red Cubs 14-171

    Saturday, July 7, 2012 2:00 PM vs EAC–ICA Brigadiers 54-119

Thursday, July 12, 2012 12:00 PM vs MIT-Malayan High School of Science 32-132

then their next game will be Saturday, July 14, 2012 12:00 PM vs Arellano Braves

no need to scout as Olsen already identified the players he needs and had talked to the respective coaches of the said players, however even if categorically the schools agreed to it they still need the approval from the UAAP and the NCAA

Perpetual books first win over San Beda in seven years
Mia Rengie Angela Domingo, InterAKTV · Thursday, July 12, 2012 · 9:45 pm

    InterAKTV/Justin Gener

After seven years without a win against the Red Lions, Aric Magic paved the way for the underdog Perpetual Altas as they outlasted San Beda, 88-87, in a thrilling overtime game in the 88th Season of the NCAA at the Arena in San Juan.

“Kahit nag-overtime, sinabi ko na sa kanila na hangga’t may oras, may chance tayo manalo,” said Altas coach Aric Del Rosario. “Isang malaking isda ang nahuli namin.”

The Altas blew a fourteen-point advantage early in the fourth when Baser Amer took charge for the Red Lions, scoring 12 of his 19 points in the final period. With 0.9 left on the clock, the Altas lead was cut down to just three, 72-69.

Amer capped his brilliant quarter with a miracle hail mary shot from the beyond the halfcourt line as time expired. Replays showed the ball leaving his hands with 0.2 of a second left, and the basket was ruled good to force the first overtime of the season.

In the extra period, defending champion San Beda eventually led by four, 84-80, with 35 ticks left. In a rebound play, Yvan Ludovice was whistled for a foul on birthday boy Earl Thompson, who canned his charities to bring the Altas to within two, 84-82.

San Beda missed on their end, and Kyle Pascual gave up his fifth and final foul on forward Anthony Paulino.

Paulino missed his two freebies but teammate Harold Arboleda collared the loose ball and made the game-tying basket, 84-all.

In the ensuing play, Art Dela Cruz fumbled on his inbound pass, with Arboleda recovering the leather. He issued a pass to Thompson who found an open Jett Vidal a few steps away from the basket. Vidal’s short stab gave the Altas an 86-84 lead, 6.5 seconds remaning.

A loose ball foul was then whistled by an official on Dela Cruz. This sent Thompson back to the stripe and the 19-year-old sophomore hit both shots to give the Altas a comfortable 88-84 lead with 6.5 seconds remaining.

Ryusei Koga threw a prayer from beyond the arc that went in for an 87-88 count but Perpetual escaped with the win.

“Nung naka-2 panalo na kami, parang ayaw pa din maniwala ng mga tao sa team namin. Ngayon, dahil sa panalo na to, seseryosohin na nila kami,” said Del Rosario after this third win as Perpetual coach.

“Binigay lang namin yung gusto ni coach,” Thompson said. “Sabi ng teammates ko kanina, birthday gift nila sa akin ang panalo. Kaninang umaga, sumabay pa ako sa Team B namin sa practice para mag-shooting shooting. Positive naman ako coming into today’s game.”

Perpetual led by as many as 14, the last one at 58-44 when Vidal opened the fourth period with a jumper. Vidal, who was waxing hot today’s game, finished with 29 points and hit five triples.

“Nung nag-OT, sabi ko sa teammates ko, wag tayo paakpekto sa tawag ng referees,” he said. “Pag pinansin natin, walang mangyayari. Puso lang.”

The Altas improved their record to 3-1 while the defending champion San Beda absorbed their first defeat for a 2-1 card after winning over Arellano and Lyceum.

    The Scores:

    Perpetual (88) — Vidal 29, Thompson 23, Paulino 10, Jolangcob 9, Babayemi 6, Arboleda 6, Elopre 3, Omorogbe 2, Alano 0, Allen 0.

    San Beda (87) — K. Pascual 25, Amer 19, Dela Cruz 12, Caram 11, Koga 9, J. Pascual 4, Ludovice 4, Dela Rosa 3, Lim 0, Moralde 0, Villaruz 0, Abarcar 0, Bonsubre 0.

    Quarterscores: 12-15, 34-27, 56-44, 72-72 (reg), 88-87 OT.

the problem nowadays a lot of individuals, teams, schools, groups, leagues and organization does not see the importance of playing for one's country. before a lot of players would do everything just to be part of the national teams .... its not only in basketball but its also with other sports ..... actually reality is that more foreign-born filipinos are dying to be a national player than home growns.

can't blame as a number of our players after school needs to earn a living and we know what is their priority.

I'm confused.. why was perpetual awarded two fts? is that the rule in amateurs for looseball fouls? in the pros, its just one extra shot when a foul outside of play is simultaneous with the shot made..

Kyle Pascual grabbed the rebound. A Perpetual Altas (Thompson?) tried to force a jump ball but was called for a foul. Altas in penalty so Kyle took 2 free throws. Coach Aric disputed the call and got a technical foul, Amer was designated to shoot FTs (technical foul) plus ball possession to the Red Lions.

Give credit to the Perpetual Altas' recruitment program as they have excellent young players like 6'1" Earl Thompson, Joel Jolangcob and the two foreign student-athletes (6'6" Babayemi and 6'5' Omorogble) who can contend with the collegiate heavyweights.

Definitely, the best game of the year!

Kyle was selected to the RP Under 18 team of 2008 which included the likes of Norbert Torres, Gab Banal, Joel Tolentino and RR Garcia. Kyle played only in the SEABA Under 18 and unfortunately was unavailable for the FIBA ASIA Under 18.

i was also confused but they explained dela cruz had a looseball foul when san beda was inbounding after the shot was counted. am assuming the red lions are already at penalty situation that's why they handed-out 2 free-throws.

anyway .... we were told to just accept the loss. so be it.

I am so proud of Kyle. I'll never regret convincing Kyle's parents to bring their son to San Beda instead of La Salle which at that time were filled-up with bigmen. Anyway I helped bring to the Archers, Organ and Van Opstal its just too bad Brian is now out of Taft.

dela cruz has already played and was a roy candidate for the uaap though...it would be surprising to see him in the roy race.

and yes, i've been saying that amer will be part of our superbly looking next batch of national team players alongside parks, ravena, torres and the like...switch to the uaap and i expect torres, parks, ferrer and escoto (all sophies) to have breakout seasons as well this year.

Brian and Joshua are both back in the US. When Ed Cordero was still the Assistant Coach, San Beda was interested in getting Brian but when he showed-up in the LA Training of the Red Lions this summer, Coach Ronnie did not take him.

Organ is now residing at Hackensack, New Jersey while Joshua is doing religious work at Houston, Texas. they just placed their basketball career on hold.

according to officials i talked to, it was a looseball foul during the inbound pass of San Beda after lay-up of Perpetual was counted.

but I have severe doubts about said call ..... but that's the breaks of the game.
