Thank you all for those who tried to lend a hand. We may not see you guys this week but we will definitely see you in the not so distant future. Support the team as Olsen and SBP have been very supportive. Go team Pinas.

National youth team presents schedule to avoid conflict with UAAP, NCAA

Hoping to avoid scheduling conflicts, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has made the first step in informing the UAAP and the NCAA about the schedule of the Philippine youth team which will compete to two Asian competitions this year.

National youth coach Olsen Racela said that the SBP has already written the two collegiate leagues about the team’s international schedule, which includes the SEABA Under-18 Championship for Men on June 26 to 30 in Singapore and the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship in Ulan Bataar, Mongolia on August 17 to 26.

“SBP already wrote a letter to the UAAP and NCAA informing them of the youth schedules. As much as possible, we are hoping to field the best possible team in both youth tournaments,” said Racela.

The Philippine youth team bankrolled by Energen competed in various tournaments last year, but were not in full strength during the 2011 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship due to the absence of several key players.

San Beda’s Arvin Tolentino, Gideon Babilonia, and Ranbill Tongco, and Gelo Vito of La Salle Greenhills were not able to suit up during the Asian tournament after their mother schools reached the NCAA juniors finals.

Despite the absence of the four players, the Philippine team went on to finish fourth in the tournament held in Nha Trang, Vietnam losing to South Korea in the bronze medal match.

Racela said that tryouts will be held for the creation of a new squad although some holdovers of last year’s Under-16 squad are expected to be invited.

“We are hopeful that the UAAP and NCAA can do something to help our youth program,” he added.

The top three finishers in the FIBA Asia Under-18 tilt will advance to the FIBA Under-19 World Championships in 2013.

SBP seeks UAAP and NCAA support for RP-SEABA tryouts
    by inboundpass
    Monday, 23 April 2012

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will be holding tryouts starting tomorrow at the Brent School gym in Pasig for the national team that will see action in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) qualifying tournament from June 24-30 in Singapore.

This was announced by SBP Executive Director Renauld ‘Sonnie’ Barrios who wrote top management of NCAA and UAAP, the country’s premier collegiate leagues, to seek their “wholehearted support” in the formation of the national team.

Coached by former PBA star Olsen Racela, the RP-SEABA team will vie for a slot to the 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Men from Aug. 17-26 in Ulaan Bataar, Mongolia.

In letters addressed to Rev. Fr. Tamerlane Lana O.P., rector and president of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and 2012 chairman Junel Baculi of National University, Barrios bared plans of the RP coaching staff to tap some players from both leagues for the 24-man national pool.

“This will be submitted to FIBA Asian on or before May 24 before it is trimmed down to the Final 12 on or before June 10,” Barrios said.

At least 40-45 players are expected to attend Day 1 of the tryouts, with ULTRA, also in Pasig, as an alternate venue.
A lot of great prospects out there. Incoming SBC freshmen Abatayo, Nazareno and Abarcar; Ateneo's Kris Porter and Gideon Babilonia, UAAP Jrs MVP Jerry Pingoy of FEU and NCAA Jrs MVP Rey Nambatac of Letran.

SEABA U16 best player and Red Cubs Arvin Tolentino, Ranbill Tongco, and LSGH's Gelo Vito should be there as well.

the freshmen from SBC and ADMU that you mention will either spend time on their school's respective team B's or will be on bench in case they will lined up in team A. i think it would be beneficial to the teams to let them play for flag since they won't be used much anyway. I read somewhere that Pingoy left FEU already and im not sure where Nambatac e. so i agree with you, the pool should be deep enough to make a very competitive team.

problem with tolentino is that SBC jrs would most likely be in the finals again so the schedule conflict might happen yet again.

i would love to see a couple of players from the provinces to be part of the team as well. it'll be a good sign that talent in the provinces is well alive(before some Manila school recruits them).

i'm guessing a lot of u16 players wont be on this u18 squad. a lot of more mature guys were there. Jeron Teng, Thomas Torres is there. Not to mention Nambatac the NCAA jrs MVP, Aguillar of Arellano Baby Chiefs, Jerie Pingoy of FEU, Gelo Alolino will be there also, Julius Cadavis of SHS-AdC, Kyle Suarez, Lambert Tenorio and Kris Porter of Ateneo. It will be a tough call for Olsen as well as his boys in the previous u16 team, as I think, he knows that the talent level of non-u16 players applicants is much higher. It is a 6 day tryout of 45 players which would be cut to a pool of 24. Future is bright for Philippine Basketball.

Seven players from PBA D-League champion NLEX will serve as nucleus of the Philippine team to the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) tournament next month.

Cliff Hodge—the Best Player of the Conference who helped power the Road Warriors to a third straight crown—and his six teammates will team up with Smart Gilas mainstays Chris Tiu, Aldrech Ramos and Marcus Douthit in the regional tournament set on July 3 to 7 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Smart Gilas coach Chot Reyes bared the roster yesterday, adding that no collegiate players were tapped since the tournament coincides with the UAAP and NCAA games.
Other NLEX players joining the national squad are Chris Ellis, Emman Monfort, Dave Marcelo, Garvo Lanete, Borgie Hermida and Woody Co.

Cebuana Lhuillier’s Vic Manuel, also a former D-League Best Player of the Conference winner, completes the 11-man crew.

The Seaba tournament serves as a qualifier for the Fiba Asia Champions Cup, formerly known as the Stankovic Cup, set in Tokyo, Japan, from Sept. 14 to 22.

Also competing in another Seaba tournament this month is the Philippine under-18 team mentored by national youth coach Olsen Racela.

Hubert Cani and Jay Alejandro (National U), Jay Javelosa (Reedley International), Prince Rivero (La Salle Green Hills) and Isaac Go (Xavier), the five holdovers from the under-16 team, will lead the country’s Seaba youth bid from June 25 to 30 in Singapore.

Rounding out the 12-man squad are Kent Lao (UST), Mark Olayon and RR De Leon (UE), Remy Morada (Emilio Aguinaldo), Rey Nambatac (Letran), Kyle Suarez (UP) and Mario Bonleon (LSGH).

Former Smart Gilas national coach Rajko Toroman is also helping the young nationals gear up for Seaba, where the top three teams will head to Mongolia in August for the Fiba Asia tournament.

“We have less time to prepare this year so we need all the help we can get,” said Racela. “He has been a big help. We’re using the same system, but we added plays from coach Rajko.”

My understanding is that Olsen Racela requested other players from the U-16 to play for him once again like Tomas Ramos and Giboy Babilonia of ADMU. The school is willing to release them to Racela but no word yet if the respective parents have made their final decision. Ramos is destined for team B this year while Babilonia will ride the bench of team A. Playing for the U-18 team will save 1 year of their eligibility and still give the players the necessary experience.

Under Racela’s lead, Philippine youth team ready to defend SEABA U-18 crown

The Philippine national Under-18 basketball team is set to leave for Singapore on Monday to compete in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Under-18 Championships to be held at the Singapore Basketball Centre from June 26-30.

The five-team meet will feature the Philippines, host Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Laos, with the top three squads qualifying for the 22nd FIBA Asia Under-18 Championships in Ulan Bator, Mongolia later this year.

Despite some early road bumps for the Under-18 team, particularly in finding a sponsor for the team, coach Olsen Racela remains in good spirits about his team’s situation heading into the SEABA tilt.

“Although we’ve had little time to prepare, we’re very optimistic,” said Racela. “The practices have been good. The practice games have been good, we’re improving every game.”

With a lack of a sponsor, the formation of the team and the ensuing preparations began late for Racela and his players. The SBP has lent its support to the team, but the few weeks they’ve had to get ready for the SEABA meet was rushed, though it ensures the country’s participation in the event.

“Hindi pwedeng hindi tayo represented sa FIBA-sanctioned competitions,” the coach said. “Also, we’re the defending champions in the Under-18 so we want to defend that.”

The SEABA lineup will include five holdovers from the Racela-helmed Energen Pilipinas Under-16 national team that competed in the FIBA Asia Under-16 Championships in Vietnam last year.

J-Jay Alejandro and Hubert Cani of National University, Jay Javelosa of Reedley International, Prince Rivero of La Salle Greenhills, and Isaac Go of Xavier School will again be part of the national team, alongside newcomers Rey Nambatac of Letran, RR De Leon and Marc Olayon of University of the East, Mario Bonleon of LSGH, Kent Lao of UST, Kyle Suarez of the University of the Philippines and Jorem Morada of EAC.

Though the Kiefer Ravena-led Nokia Pilipinas Under-18 team breezed through the SEABA tilt two years ago, sweeping their five games by a winning margin of over 50 points per game, Racela remains cautious of their Southeast Asian rivals, particularly Indonesia and Singapore.

“We were supposed to play Indonesia last Saturday when they were here,” said Racela. “Pero nagkasakit yung players nila so hindi namin sila nakalaro. Ang coach nila si Coach Nat Canson so I’m sure ibang system na naman doon sa nakalaban namin sa SEABA Under-16 last time.”

Aside from having an experienced coach like Canson, Indonesia also boasts of good size, with a player standing 6-10 and another at 6-7. His side has an average height of 6-3.

Racela is also wary of hosts Singapore, which will be led by the 6-7 Delvin Goh, who was already named to the lineup of the both the Singapore Slingers in the ABL and the Singapore men’s national team in the Southeast Asian Games despite being just 16 years of age.

Racela also took the time out to express his gratitude the schools and the leagues who have allowed their players to don the national colors.

“Pasalamat lang sa schools who let their players play for the national team,” said Racela. “Lalo na ang NU, who are the UAAP hosts this year. Aayusin nila ang schedule para makalaro si Hubert Cani tsaka si Jerie Pingoy of FEU sa FIBA Asia.”

The UAAP is reportedly planning to keep the Juniors schedule clear of any games during the stretch of August 17 to 26, so as not to conflict with the international basketball schedule.

“We hope the NCAA will follow that lead because we have players from the NCAA also. Ang EAC, pinahiram na si Jorem sa SEABA and La Salle Greenhills pinahiram na si Mario. We just hope the league also fixes its schedule para makalaro rin sila sa FIBA Asia.”

from the looks of it the UAAP is willing to cooperate by changing their schedule so as not to be in conflict with the U18 Boys National Team's calendar of tournaments. In the UAAP it is the Host School which controls the activities for the season, we were lucky NU is host and with former U18 National Head Coach Eric Altamirano, they understand the situation. However in the NCAA, even if there is a Host School, its the MANCOMM which makes the decisions and from the looks of it, they'll not give way to the National Team's needs and would not adjust their schedule.

Aktv covers the NCAA right? Can't MVP pressure them? Their excuse last year was that studio 23 wouldn't move the F4 schedule.

Opening bye boosts PH U-18 Seaba bid

THE PHILIPPINE Under-18 Youth team gets to size up its opponents first when the 8th Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) U18 Championship for Men fires off in Singapore today.

With only five holdovers from the under-16 squad, the virtually untested young Nationals start their campaign against Laos at 6 p.m. tomorrow after drawing a bye in today’s opening schedule at Singapore Basketball Center.

“We have no idea yet about the other teams,” said national youth coach Olsen Racela. “But we know Indonesia improved a lot and Singapore also has a tall 16-year-old who was lined up by the Slingers in the ABL.”

Jay Alejandro and Hubert Cani (National University), Jay Javelosa (Reedley International), Prince Rivero (La Salle Green Hills) and Isaac Go (Xavier), who all suited up for the under-16 squad, will rely on their international experience as the Philippines tries to defend its crown in the five-nation tournament.

“We only had about one month to prepare,” said Racela. “But even if we had little time, we’re very optimistic. Our practices had been good.”

Also suiting up for the squad are Kent Lao (University of Santo Tomas), Mark Olayon and RR De Leon (University of the East), Remy Morada (Emilio Agui-naldo College), Rey Nambatac (Letran), Kyle Suarez (University of the Philippines) and Mario Bonleon (LSGH).

The young Nationals, who left Manila yesterday, will clash with Singapore on Thursday and Malaysia on Friday, before wrapping up their stint on Saturday against Indonesia, which is handled by veteran Filipino coach Nat Canson.

The top two teams will head to Mongolia in August for the Fiba Asia tournament. The Filipino under 16-team finished fourth in Vietnam last year.
